Harris, Hoskins talk diversity, development at forum Mayoral candidates spar at library- and Review-sponsored event

Debate centered on diversity and development at the mayoral forum on March 10, sponsored by the Forest Park Review and Forest Park Public Library.

Candidates Rory Hoskins and Chris Harris each served as commissioners on the village council — Hoskins for eight years and Harris for four years — and each went on to unsuccessfully challenge Emanuel “Chris” Welch for state representative of the 7th district. In 2015, Harris also challenged Mayor Anthony Calderone for the village’s top spot.

He lost that race in which Hoskins endorsed Calderone.

At the debate, Hoskins vowed to avoid “micromanaging” village operations.

Spring cleaning on the Prairie Path

ach spring, a dirty little secret surfaces. The snow melts to reveal the layer of litter lurking beneath it. This blight can be found everywhere, but it’s especially a problem along the Illinois Prairie Path. That’s why an organization of volunteers is gathering on Saturday, April 27 to clean and spruce up the 132 miles of path that extends from its eastern trailhead in Maywood to the Fox River.

Overseeing this annual effort is John Marconnet, a Winfield resident who lives a few hundred feet from the path.

He will coordinate the efforts of 300-400 volunteers. The Wheaton section alone attracts about 90 volunteers. They clear hazards from the path and pick up litter on both sides. There is no rain date, so volunteers have worked in high winds and pouring rain. These individuals range in age from 8 to 74.

Many organizations also sign up, like scout troops, churches and even the DuPage County Swat Team.

As Marconnet observed, the eastern section of the path needs as much TLC as the Wheaton section. It passes through an urban landscape, where litter tends to collect. The new coordinator for this section

is Marcius Scaggs. He described the Cook County portion of the path as “under-utilized and under-maintained.” Fortunately, the village of Maywood is solidly behind efforts to remediate it. The village has equipped volunteers with bags, rakes, shovels and gloves. It has furnished trucks to haul away the trash.

Scaggs is a former Maywood trustee who was drawn to the project by his mentor, Lenell Grace. Known as “Mr. Maywood,” Grace would go doorto-door to recruit volunteers.

After he died four years ago, Scaggs was determined to keep his legacy alive.

On the day of the annual cleanup, he assembles volunteers at 11th Avenue and the Prairie Path about 10 a.m. They are given water and a light breakfast, then cleanup crews are dispatched east and west from that location. They not only pick up bottles and clear tree limbs, they put mulch around the trees and plant native species. All of this is done in a festive atmosphere, according to Scaggs.

“We make a party out of it,” he said, citing the upbeat music and the barbeque served. They usually attract about 30 volunteers but could use more, because they

clean the path from 1st Avenue all the way through Hillside, a distance of six miles.

The crews include people of all ages. Some are students who use the project to fulfill community service requirements.

Volunteers from Forest Park are welcome to join in. It’s a perfect fit for a bike-friendly village located so close to the path. Our Boy Scout troop is already on board, but I can see other organizations getting involved.

Besides the cleanup, our community garden members and garden centers could help with replenishing the plant life.

The project is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen ties between Forest Park and Maywood. We already share a high school; now we can be partners in maintaining the Prairie Path. In fact, there’s a group of Forest Parkers who plan to improve access to the path by linking it to the Desplaines CTA terminal.

On clean-up day, we can also do what Forest Parkers do best — make a party out of it.

On April 6, 1894, as researched and rere ported by Dr. Frank Orland in 1979, there was an election in the Village of Harlem (the predecessor to Village of Forest Park). This very aged copy of the specimen ballot shows at that time there were several party labels. In his research he found parties such as the Citizens’ Party, the Harlem Regulars,the Independents and the Municipal People’s Party. On these ballots a voter could cast a single party vote, thereby passing consideration to individuals.

Some of the names on this balot will also appear in both community and political life in Forest Park for generations like Jacob Gold (founding family of Goldyburgers, Golden Drug, and 1927 Mayor George Gold), John Glos (pioneer resident and grocer at Elgin and Dixon Forest Park) and Henry Stunk (School Board member in 1925 seen breaking ground on the new school south of Roosevelt, Betsy Ross).

Village to create sustainability commission Group is also looking to start a Keep Forest Park Beautiful chapter

Forest Park’s informal environmental group will soon become an official village commission, with the aim of also certifying a local branch of Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit that aims to end littering, improve recycling and beautify communities.

“These are all things that fit within where we want to go forward,” said Karen Rozmus, president of Keep Illinois Beautiful.

Rozmus, a Forest Park resident who started the village’s recycling program, is the former manager of the Oak Park Public Works Department’s waste reduction program, she also launched Keep Oak Park Beautiful in 2000. Starting a local chapter of Keep Forest Park Beautiful, she said, will provide additional resources and support when undertaking sustainability initiatives, like installing cigarette butt holders along Madison Street, implementing a “special event refuse enforcement officer,” holding informational

meetings on composting, and more.

“Resources, handbooks, networking, you could name any program you might want to start in Forest Park and I would have 10 examples nationwide about how they did it and how we could copy them,” Rozmus said. “It’s a great sharing organization.”

About a year ago, Rozmus ran into Mayor Anthony Calderone at an official dinner down in Springfield, and the two started talking about creating a village sustainability commission. She told Calderone about her work for Keep Illinois Beautiful and Calderone “seemed open and excited” about starting something official from a village standpoint in Forest Park.

When she returned to Forest Park, she met with the village’s informal environmental group, Go Green Forest Park, and talked to members about next steps, asking whether they’d like to create a formal village commission or become an arm of Keep Illinois Beautiful. The group decided to do both — create a commission that will act as a board for the national affiliate.

“So it will have both a little nonprofit organization feeling

to network throughout Illinois — at schools, churches, etc. — but also have the backing and support of the village position,” Rozmus said.

When she informed Calderone, he said the village lawyer would write a new ordinance officially creating the commission. But as they paged through a binder full of village ordinances, Rozmus said they discovered a village “environmental control KAREN ROZMUS Keep Illinois Beautiful president commission” already on the books that hadn’t been active since the 1970s. Calderone will simply appoint members to that commission, who will apply and, once certified, act as the board for Keep Forest Park Beautiful Rozmus said “it’s not easy” to become certified through Keep America Beautiful and, depending on the town, can take 2-6 months. She said the Forest Park arm will seek involvement from other local entities, including the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce, schools, library, park district and others. “I’ve already been talking to people about coalescing in these efforts,” she said.

Rozmus hopes the village commission is formed before Calderone leaves office since, “he’s been there all along … he should be the instigator.” As for the next mayor, she hopes he “will take the ball and run with it.”

D209 sets sights on new middle school sports program

Elementary and high school officials in Proviso Township are seriously considering the creation of a middle school sports program that would allow fifth- through eighthgrade students from all of D209’s feeder schools the opportunity to compete against one another.

Organizers of the proposed program argue that the initiative will help retain some of the droves of students who go to high schools other than the ones in Proviso Township High Schools District 209 after they leave the elementary school level. They also argue that the program will help D209 compete with other high school districts that already have similar middle school sports programs.

Bellwood School District 88 Supt. Mark Holder called a meeting on Feb. 21 at Roosevelt Middle School, 2500 Oak St. in Bellwood, to discuss the proposal. Roughly two dozen local school officials and elected leaders, including the mayors of Bellwood and Broadview, attended the meeting, with most of those in attendance expressing their support for the idea.

“When our kids leave elementary school, they’re going to schools outside of Proviso Township and that’s something that we’re really trying to harness,” Holder said.

Holder added that he and District 88 Board President Sondra McClendon initiated talks with Calvin Davis, the athletic director at Proviso West High School, about the creation of the program. Holder said it’s been more than a decade since D88 schools competed in an athletic conference.

Many D209 feeder districts — such as Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview District 89, Lindop School District 92 and Forest

Park School District 91 — already compete in sports leagues.

For instance, Forest Park schools and Lindop (a single-school district), compete against each other in the Salt Creek Valley Conference while District 89 competes in the Illinois Elementary School Association. Currently, however, not all D209 feeder schools compete with one another in one unified feeder program, which is what Davis is proposing.

During the Feb. 21 meeting, Roger Nickles, a Lindop PE teacher and coach, said that even though his school competes in the SCVC in a variety of sports, including basketball, soccer and cross-country, there’s room to accommodate D209’s proposed middle school sports program.

“Let’s build a bridge with the SCVC,” Nickles said, explaining that the current conference could possibly “mesh” with D209’s proposed program by consolidating in a variety of ways.

Edward Brophy, the assistant superintendent for operations with Forest Park D91, said that the Feb. 21 conversation “was a great first start” and “we’re with you.”

Davis said that the proposed middle school league could include a range of indoor and outdoor sports, including basketball, flag football, boys and girls swimming, softball, track, soccer and even golf.

The league, he added, would be divided into two levels — a junior varsity level comprising fifth- and sixth-graders and a varsity level comprising seventh- and eighth-graders.

The program’s playoff format and regulatory rules would mirror those of the Illinois High School Association. Coaches in the proposed program would be required to undergo training and certification. Each school would appoint an athletic director to handle compli-

ance and other ongoing issues.

“The only expense that a school would incur is the cost of buses to and from games and officials’ fees that it would pay if it’s the home team,” Davis said. A limited liability corporation, along with an outside consultant, would oversee officials’ assignments, coach certification and training, awards and other administrative matters.

Davis said that he wrote the middle school sports program for the Chicago Public Schools system. That program served about 400 schools and existed for around 12 years before CPS officials cut it out of the budget, Davis said.

“This is my sixth year as athletic director at Proviso West and for the past few years, it’s really sunk in that we are missing a feeder program, where kids come to us at the high school level with experience in interscholastic sports and fundamental skills and training,” Davis said.

A unified feeder program would give D209 high schools a talent pipeline that already exists at competitor districts, he explained.

“We’re competing against the Hinsdale Centrals, the Lyons Townships, the Willowbrooks — all those schools have feeder programs and you can really see the difference,” Davis said. “[A program of our own] would give us something to help develop our young people: Not just in sports but in life.”

Davis explained that he and his team planned on administering a survey to all feeder schools in order to get a sense of which schools might compete in which sports, where those sports might be fielded and other logistical issues.

Once officials gather that information, they’ll have a material basis for creating the league. Davis said that, if all goes according to

plan, the new feeder sports program could debut next school year. Davis said that officials at Proviso East and Proviso West are already on board, and that all playoff and championship games for the proposed program would be played on a D209 high school campus.

Officials in District 209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez’s office, however, said that the idea has yet to be presented to the administration or the board. So far, they added, talks about the proposed program have been informal.

McClendon said that the program would help provide “not just top athletes, but every child” with exposure to fundamentals in sports before they enroll in D209.

For Johnny Nolan-Jenkins, who won the 1988 state title in the long jump and currently coaches track and field at Proviso West, the feeder program is an idea that’s long-overdue.

“It’s so important that we do this,” said Nolan-Jenkins, who collaborated with McClendon, Holder and Davis to help launch discussions about the proposed program.

Nolan-Jenkins also coached track and field for nine years at Proviso East.

He said that he’s tired of fielding the same question from his colleagues in other areas across the state: Given the magnitude of the area’s talent pool, why isn’t Proviso consistently winning state titles in a range of sports — not just basketball and football.

“The whole idea is for us to have developed and trained kids so that they’re successful when they get to high school,” McClendon said. “And the best prize is that they possibly end up with college scholarships.”

Davis said that student-athletes would also benefit by gaining critical life skills.

He said that research shows that students involved in sports earn better grades, have fewer disciplinary issues and attend school more frequently, among other benefits.

“That same discipline and repetition that raises test scores is practiced in sports every day,” Davis said.

East grad models lessons in grace

Robin Harris, a Proviso East High School graduate and fashion model, stands stately and statuesque at 6-feet-1. Her good looks and long, lithe frame landed her a contract with Ford Models, the internationally known modeling agency. Her height, however, also presented some challenges.

“The clothes were great,” she told a Fox 32 news anchor last year, “but as soon as I stepped off the runway, I couldn’t find that same style or fit for me.”

Harris, who has an MBA in international business, took matters into her own hands and created Model Atelier — a “luxury womenswear brand that designs exclusively for tall, strong, and confident women,” according to the company’s website.

Her company is now the “premier fashion partner” with the Women’s National Basketball Players Association, which means that Harris dresses WNBA players for a variety of red carpet appearances — from the ESPY Awards to the NBA Awards.

On March 16, Confidence Apparel — Model Atelier’s apparel brand — teamed up with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky and Arbonne, the beauty products company, to host a Teen Confidence Chat in Chicago for roughly four

dozen young women from the Proviso Township area.

The girls got makeup tutorials and a master class in self-confidence during the twohour session — thanks, in part, to Rajeska Jackson, another East alum, co-founder of the nonprofit Best of Proviso Township and a Confidence brand ambassador.

“I’ve known Robin since she was in grade school,” Jackson said, adding that Harris was influential in helping Jackson’s daughters launch their modeling careers.

Elicia Moseby, a Proviso East student who lives in Maywood, said the session “was very inspiring and will help a lot of people with their inner beauty.”

Cheyenne Parker, a Chicago Sky power forward, explained for the girls through video feed the importance of inner and outer beauty.

“Inner beauty is expressing the importance of how we treat others and the decisions we decide to make,” Parker said. “We exercise inner beauty by our actions. Inner beauty helps our outer beauty come forth.”

During an interview on March 16, Harris said the Saturday session was about “empowering girls and talking about real-life issues” like self-esteem and wellness — issues she’s confronted during her path from childhood to womanhood.

The youngest of six children, Harris grew up in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood. She is the first entrepreneur in her family, so she understands what it feels like to aspire to something you can’t see.

“I got a lot of inspiration from TV,” she said. “I saw really beautiful women doing amazing things and one day I was like, I want to be that. I also read a lot about the things I had a passion for.”

Music Fest meets its maker Star Events decides not to hold fest another year

After a three-year run along Madison Street, Music Fest is no more. Laurie Kokenes, executive director of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce, said Star Events alerted the group that they wouldn’t be able to hold the fest again this summer.

“Rather than making a quick decision to find an event to replace Music Fest,” Kokenes said, “the Chamber is focusing on identifying ways to better support our members and the business community. We’re having thoughtful conversations about our events and programming and reaching out to our members to learn more about their needs.”

Kokenes said she was happy for businesses that saw sales go up during the event— like Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor, which had lines of people out the door in years past— but noted in a 2018 Review article that making money was never the fest’s main goal.

“The primary goal of Music Fest,” she explained, “was not to make money. The goal is to attract some of the 1.6 million people who live within a 20-minute drive of Forest Park to discover what our businesses have to of-

fer, to keep Forest Park’s name out there, showcase our village and local businesses, and create an opportunity for Madison Street exposure.”

Dan Watts, co-owner of O’Sullivans Public House, previously said he believes the fest accomplished that mission.

“From O’Sullivan’s perspective,” he said “the Music Festival allows my restaurant to attract new customers who have not dined with us. [ In 2017] several fest goers were introduced to our food offerings and subsequently became regular patrons.”

Some businesses lost money during the three-day festival, in part because customers were unwilling to pay the entry fee to gain access to Madison Street, where they would ordinarily shop or dine. Last year one of those was Team Blonde, a women’s clothing boutique. Heidi Vance, a co-owner of the shop, said that, although she lost business during the three-day event, she “gets it. The bigger picture is that what is good for the street is in the long run good for each of the individual businesses.”

Mike Keating, deputy chief of police, said officers felt good about Music Fest, because Star Events has a “fantastic security team” which freed up Forest Park police to focus on

John Doss, director of public works, said Star Events relieved his crew of much of the work they had to do when, up until 2012, the Chamber put on an event called Summerfest by themselves.

Kokenes said she understood why Star Events cancelled.

“When you consider the overhead for entertainment, staffing, security, staging, sound and other equipment, the event would have had to draw steady crowds of thousands each day in order to be profitable,”

she said.

“With the knowledge that it typically takes three to five years for a new event to reach its potential, the Star Events team organized a professional, safe and clean event with top-notch equipment and dynamic entertainment. But despite years of hard work by the team at Star Events and the Chamber, Music Fest just didn’t grow in popularity like some of the Chamber’s other successful events such as the parade, the wine walks and the holiday walk.”

Lawmaker urges opposition to Westlake closing

An area legislator is urging residents to voice their opposition to the proposed closure of Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park. Last month, the hospital’s new owners, California-based Pipeline Health, announced their plan to shutter the facility just two weeks after purchasing it.

State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th), whose district includes many served by the hospital and who is also a Westlake trustee, released a statement on March 15 urging residents to call and submit letters to the Health Facilities and Services Review Board.

The Review Board is the state agency that handles applications for purchasing and closing hospitals. Pipeline is hoping the agency signs off on their application soon, so that it can close

Westlake later this year.

“The way our community has come together to fight Westlake’s closure has been an inspiration,” Welch said. “By sending a letter and calling [the Review Board], we can continue our joint fight to protect access to health care in our neighborhoods.”

Welch said residents can send letters to the Review Board, located at 525 W. Jefferson St. in Springfield. The state rep added that his office has a template letter that residents may sign.

Additionally, Welch is encouraging residents to call HFSRB at 217-782-3516. He said, “All public comments must be received by close of business on April 10.”

Welch and other lawmakers expressed anger with Pipeline

officials, who they said assured them they would continue operating the hospital.

Earlier this month, the village of Melrose Park filed a lawsuit against Pipeline and its affiliated entities, claiming the owners engaged in fraud and conspiracy during the process of purchasing the nearly century-old Melrose Park institution.

On Friday, the Illinois House Appropriations-Human Services Committee held a hearing about the community impact of the closing. On Monday, the Review Board held a similar hearing in Melrose Park.

Candidate in uncontested park race outlines platform Walsh feels “a little left out” of excitement this campaign cycle

His race may not be contested but he’s still campaigning.

Matt Walsh is seeking his second, six-year term on the Park District of Forest Park Board of Commissioners, saying he feels passionate about creating a formal capital and infrastructure plan, evaluating the park district’s program needs, installing green technology and more. Walsh works as an analyst for the village of Homer Glen.

“Our biggest challenge, and I don’t think it’s unique to Forest Park per se, I think the biggest challenge is attracting people who don’t usually come to The Park, to come to The Park,” Walsh said. “Little League enrollments declined — that’s an unfortunate thing — and soccer numbers have declined. The classes aren’t as big as they would have been when I was a kid. With that, comes opportunity.”

Although the Roos Recreation Center has been developed, Walsh said he was interesting in “improving” the structure by installing solar panels on the roof and on traffic signals nearby. He hopes the park district will try to add additional indoor winter programming now that the center’s been built. Creating new programs that are not necessarily sports-related — like violin classes over the summer — is a way for the park district to develop its program offerings, he said.

“The library has a lot of creative programming; they partner with the historical society and arts all the time. I think we can learn to be more creative,” he said.

During his last term, Walsh said he’s proud the board installed online registration for classes, brought back the Fourth of July fireworks to the community and, of course, finished developing the new Roos building.

Celebrate local history, get engaged with the present Join the Historical Society of Forest Park for their first-ever History and Community Festival, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison St. “It’s a friend-raiser, just getting people to come out and get to know us and see what we’re doing,” said Alexis Ellers, director of the historical society.

Ellers said the group originally thought of modeling the celebration after a birthday party for the village—and calling it “Land Grant Day,” after when the federal government first recognized the village—but then realized Forest Park’s history started before then.

“Land Grant Day’ was not inclusive enough to Native American history, because obviously history started way before ‘Land Grant Day,’” Ellers said.

The historical society will also display its collection, including its 1923 Chamber of Commerce quilt, and will be collecting oral histories from attendees. Congressman Davis endorses Hoskins for mayor The congressman also plans to help the candidate fundraise

Forest Park mayoral candidate Rory Hoskins recently picked up the endorsement of Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th). Davis announced his endorsement outside of Mohr Oil, 7340 Harrison in Forest Park.

“This village will be well-served if you’re in the mayor’s chair,” Davis said in front of a throng of Hoskins supporters. “I’ve been impressed with [Hoskins’s] honest approach and truthfulness. Every conversation I’ve ever had with Rory and everything I’ve ever been involved with him in, [I’ve been impressed with his] honest, ethical approach and his sensitivity of trying to make sure things reflect not only what is etched in law and statute, but also what people themselves would appreciate.”

Hoskins, who said that he’s known Davis for nearly 20 years, said that he decided to announce the endorsement just across the street from the new Roos Recreation Center, because the Park District was where he got his start in civic life. The district has also been a center of many initiatives Hoskins has spearheaded, including the annual

Juneteenth Family Pool Party.

“The park district is an important symbol of a place where families come together in Forest Park,” Hoskins said. “Whether you’re blue, green, purple, red, black, white, gay, straight — we all come together at the park district.”

Davis officials said that the congressman plans on holding a fundraiser for Hoskins this week.

When contacted for a comment on any endorsements he’s landed, Chris Harris, Hoskins’s opponent, said that he has received “some non-solicited” endorsements, but “I honestly don’t believe in political ones and don’t pursue them. It doesn’t seem right if you are truly independent.”

Harris, quoting a campaign supporter, added, ‘It would be naive to think political endorsements are given for free.’”

Hoskins said that the owner of Mohr oil did not officially endorse him, adding that the business owner has been a supporter of the annual Juneteenth event.

“I’m extremely grateful that Congressman Davis has taken time out of his schedule to endorse my candidacy,” Hoskins said.

Shots fired inside, outside Thomas Avenue home Approximately six shots were fired in and outside of a home in the 1100 block of Thomas Avenue at 7:11 p.m. on March 12, according to Forest Park Police Chief Thomas Aftanas. There reportedly were no injuries.

“It definitely wasn’t a random act,” Aftanas said. “It doesn’t happen often, especially in the residential areas, but obviously it does happen and it can happen anywhere.”

Aftanas said there were several people in the house before the shooting — with possibly two in the basement and another upstairs — when several others arrived at the house and “supposedly something started upstairs.”

The police chief said there were a “couple” of suspected shots fired in the home, as well as a few outside the house, but he wasn’t sure of the exact numbers in each location.

Police believe a 9 mm weapon was used, although they did not recover any firearms.

Aftanas said there was some evidence that marijuana was being used in the home although “we don’t know if that had anything to do with what started this. It’s still too early to tell.”

Aftanas said police have identified at least two persons of interest — a man who

lives in the home and a male resident of Bellwood. Both have been interviewed and released pending other witness interviews and “more evidence has to be gone through.”

Aftanas said he wasn’t aware of any other incidents that occurred in the home.

He urged anyone with information or surveillance video to call the department’s nonemergency line at 708-366-2425.

“We would love to hear from you,” Aftanas said.

Gun recovered in lot Officers arrived at the intersection of Desplaines and Roosevelt about 10:30 p.m. on March 14, after a call about a man with a gun. Police saw a Kia attempting to leave the Walmart parking lot, 1300 Desplaines Ave. Officers swerved in front of the car, forcing it to park.

A Broadview man exited the vehicle, and officers handcuffed him.

Police ordered a Maywood woman out of the vehicle and on the ground, carefully handcuffing her since she was pregnant.

They searched the vehicle and found a loaded handgun and bag of suspect marijuana behind the passenger seat.

Neither individual had valid concealed carry or FOID cards. Police said the Broadview man was also appeared to be under the influence of ecstasy (MDMA). He received a misdemeanor charge for unlawful use of weapon, resisting officers, and an ordinance violation for possession of cannabis.

Teens steel car from daycare Two teens stole a Chevrolet Impala from Kangaroo Korner Learning Center, 900 Beloit, about 3:20 p.m. on March 15. The victim told police she was picking up her child from the facility, left her vehicle running, and two teens climbed into her vehicle.

The car stopped on the 800 block of Beloit, and the two boys got out of the car and fled on foot. Police captured them on the 1000 block of Marengo, but the victim refused to press charges.

Obscenity-spewing man arrested for DUI Police pulled over a Mustang to the 300 block of Burkhardt Court about 1:45 a.m. on March 13. Officers immediately recognized

a Wood Dale man, 23, behind the wheel, since he had been kicked out of Angelo O’Leary’s earlier in the evening for acting belligerently and exposing himself. Police said they smelled booze on the man.

He was transported to the Forest Park Police Department, where he started yelling racial and obscene slurs at officers. He told police he had a “couple” beers.

The Wood Dale man blew a blood alcohol content of 0.177, more than twice the legal limit. In the holding cell, he took off his pants and underwear and told police, “you’re just in time for me to kill myself.”

Officers decided to move him to a cell where he was under constant watch, but the man wouldn’t leave his cell, telling police “you all are going to have to come get me out of here.” He put his hands up in an aggressive manner. Police handcuffed him and transported him to a new cell. He spat on officers.

The man was charged with driving under the influence, battery and driving without headlights.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, March 11-18, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Ischemic stroke from page 1 “When you go to bed at 8 o’clock, you know that something is wrong,” he joked.

Mike also felt weakness in his right leg, which he attributed to his bad back, a result of a career working as a stagehand. He thought nothing of the discomfort and lethargy until the following afternoon, when Mike was at Healy’s Westside watching “Jeopardy.” A friend noticed a droop in the right side of Mike’s mouth and slurred speech, two classic signs of a stroke.

“I didn’t feel my mouth,” Mike said of his symptoms, “but it was clear to the people around me that something was wrong.”

Mike returned home, where his wife Kay called the Forest Park Fire Department. The Collins, who are celebrating 42 years of marriage this year, live just a few blocks away from the station, near the intersection of Des Plaines and Jackson, which contributed to a speedy response from first responders.

Within minutes, EMTs arrived, followed by the mobile stroke unit, which is an enhanced ambulance that contains technology and medicine critical to diagnosing and treating strokes. Mobile stroke unit services are free of charge to the village, thanks to the Grainger Foundation four-year grant that funds the unit. The village was awarded the first mobile stroke unit in the state in April 2018. Last year, the village clocked the visits by the mobile stroke, as compared to the six other municipalities it reports to.

Mike’s condition was quickly identified as an ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel carrying blood to the brain is blocked by a clot. Mike was taken to Rush hospital in Oak Park, where he received immediate care.

Mike was released from the hospital on Feb. 25 and, just a few days later, can already drive his car.

“He is in great shape compared to other stroke victims,” said Kay, explaining how lucky they were to have caught the stroke so early.

Mike can credit much of his current livelihood to early detection, which has come to his aid on more than one occasion. Previously, a chemical stress test revealed that Mike needed a quadruple bypass. Within a day of the test, Mike was in surgery.

Mike spent his career as a stagehand with the IATSE union, which involved him working at downtown theaters, events like Jazz Fest, and touring on the road with musicians, and required physical exertion and heavy lifting. Now a retiree of 18 years, Mike looks back on his career fondly: “I always enjoyed going into work.” Mike retired with disability due to arthritis in his back, for which he receives regular physical therapy.

Post-stroke, Mike will continue physical therapy with additional focus on his legs, along with speech therapy to regain his full ability to articulate, as the stroke left him with slightly challenged speech.

The biggest change of all, according to Mike, will be in his diet and lifestyle, and alcohol consumption will be eliminated in order to protect his brain.

Above all, Mike and Kay feel lucky to have caught the stroke when they did.

“The people of Forest Park can feel safe knowing that the unit is here,” said Mike, adding “Forest Park is geographically very lucky because we are surrounded by hospitals and are a small enough town that the Forest Park EMT’s can reach us quickly.”

When he and his wife moved to Forest Park in 1999, Hoskins said they initially rented an apartment. He decided to coach soccer because he wanted his son’s league fees waived. When he approached the Park District of Forest Park, he said he was “regarded with some skepticism” but eventually got the coaching job, which he said opened the door to joining the village’s Traffic and Safety Commission and then running for office.

“I don’t think the question of inclusion or diversity is going to go away anytime soon; I think it’s happening organically, but it’s been a slow process,” he said. “We have to change our mindset to where we no longer only have ‘Merry Christmas’ on the village decorations. There’s room for other ethnic and religious holidays to be highlighted.”

Years ago he saw instances where AfricanAmerican mothers wanted to volunteer in the schools but “for whatever reason there’s a breakdown in communication and they just don’t feel welcome.” When he helped start the park district’s annual Juneteenth celebration, he said it was a “very different” event for Forest Park.

“People were actually saying things like, ‘Rory is not going to allow white people to come to Juneteenth,’” Hoskins said. “Now that is absolutely crazy, right? But you know there’s always resistance to inclusion. The whole point of the event was to bring people who may feel a little bit marginalized into a new environment.”

He noted that the village has never had an African-American firefighter and had “very few” black police officers. When he was commissioner, he said he talked to the then-fire chief about the issue, and the two decided to more actively look for African-American candidates by taking an ad out with minority trade groups and posting a prominent ad on the village website. Advertising through these means was an effective way to drive diversity in village hiring, he said, as well as communicate with residents.

If elected, Hoskins would update the village website so it’s “more robust, a lot quicker, easier to use,” but he doesn’t plan to use social media.

Harris, meanwhile, said he thinks the mayor needs to be on social media since that’s where the residents are. If elected, he would likely start an account similar to the “Mayor Anthony Calderone” profile the mayor currently uses to engage residents, which is separate from his personal profile.

He said he would also hold regular office hours for citizens to attend and present a yearly state-of-the-village address.

“We, as a village, get sued far more consistently than any village of our size. We pay out, we have a reputation of settling, and we get lawsuits, some very warranted, some not,” Harris said. “There’s law firms that specialize in this and there’s a big red dot on us as a mark these days. At some point you have to fight one of those. It’s going to cost you more money. You can’t have the reputation as a town that will settle every lawsuit.”

Harris estimated the village’s law bills were three times higher than those of River Forest, a town of similar size. He said it’s because staff has to “lean on” the firm too much for advice. If elected, Harris said he would look to reimagine the way the village uses its vendors to cut costs.

“When staff has to pick up the phone for every legal question instead of talking to a paralegal, instead of talking to our contact lawyer, or talking to our liaison at the engineering firm instead of a lower staff, you’re spending a lot of money right out of the gate,” Harris said.

Hoskins agreed there is room to reduce costs at the village by competitively bidding some of its existing service contracts, naming ambulance services and auditing as examples. He also believes there is room for condo development along Roosevelt Road, saying part of the reason the village expanded its tax increment financing (TIF) districts along Roosevelt Road is because the village was anticipating future development.

“I met with a couple of business leaders and they told me a property owner has an interest in building higher” on Roosevelt, Hoskins said. “I’ve heard from a number of people in Forest Park, business owners, stakeholders in our community, who would like to see some more dense development along routes where they are close to transportation.”

Harris also said he’d talked to the property manager at Forest Park Plaza and recommended the mall lease out some of its lots near Portillo’s and Taco Bell. When he last talked with business owners, he said, a ban-

quet hall was interested in coming to the vacant Home Owners Bargain Outlet (HOBO) space.

He ran for mayor four years ago because he “felt like things were slowing down” in terms of economic development, saying an “all in” approach was necessary. He noted that the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce had recently restarted its own economic development committee after the previous effort by the village “kind of petered out.”

“It’s not coming from village hall. I’ve said this before and I know some people on the chamber aren’t happy with me saying it, but I think it needs to be a partnership with the village. I think it needs to be a partnership with the bank,” Harris said. “I think you need to help people develop small business plans.”

Hoskins named development of the front of the village-owned Altenheim property as a shot of cash for small restaurants and shops on Madison Street, but at least 5 acres should be saved as green space. He named knocking down the Altenheim’s old buildings as his top priority as mayor.

“If there’s construction there, that construction has economic inputs that benefit the rest of Forest Park,” Hoskins said, “Where do the construction workers eat, is there participation from local businesses in construction? I believe there is. It creates traffic for Madison Street and it creates consumers who will probably spend money in Forest Park.”

Harris said the first step in figuring out what to do with the Altenheim property is to hold a town hall meeting about its future. He believes the village should sell off a portion of the front property.

“With that front portion, I’ve talked about a boutique hotel, I think that’s a winner for Madison Street as well,” Harris said. “If we had a larger green space, conference space in a boutique hotel — 80-room max — that could fit into that space. … Then you have people who need to drink, eat and shop right down the street.”

Summer Program at Dominican Challenges & Inspires Gifted Students

O

ver thirty years ago, talent development in the education of gifted children was introduced across the nation, reflecting a growth of research and development around notions of intelligence.

Ironically, when it comes to leaving no child behind today, we discover that gifted students can easily fall through the cracks as testing drives us to teach to a standardized response while bringing proficiency of all students to grade level. The phrase, “genius denied,” refers to those who will suffer a profound gap between their fullest potential and what little is asked of them, particularly when one size just doesn’t fit all.

There is a common misnomer that gifted students can get by on their own, and therefore do not require specialized services. All too often, this misguided notion is also coupled with another myth that intelligence is merely inherited, does not change, and therefore again, does not require specialized services.

Perhaps this is part of the reason why schooling for the gifted is too often a lonely and isolating experience. Not to mention, BORING!

MAYOR

Hoskins for mayor It is a positive and future-focused spring in Forest Park. And it is in that spirit that we of offer our enthusiastic mayoral endorsement to Rory Hoskins.

Hoskins has the experience as a village commissioner, the deep local ties essential to earning a place in Forest Park, the demeanor to lead a village with genuine challenges while also leading us past the divisiveness that has fundamentally defined Forest Park RORY for too many years.

Rory Hoskins is both quiet spoken and plain HOSKINS spoken. In this campaign he has directly addressed Forest Park’s unsustainable financial path. Those challenges of rising costs and flat-to-declining revenue are not unique to Forest Park and are not, despite some noise, particularly impacted by the exit of video gaming.

Forest Park will benefit from the fresh eyes of a new mayor and a substantially remade village council as it looks hard at the cost structure of the village. Our local government is not fat, but it is unexamined, as one would expect after any 20-year mayoralty. Hard choices on costs must come.

But it is on the growth side that Hoskins has the most to offer. He has an expansive and inclusive view of the potential for economic development in Forest Park. He will work his wider state and regional network of contacts, he will find local expertise, and he will work hard to sell the village’s considerable virtues to investors who see our prime location as an asset.

A longtime soccer coach as his kids came up, Hoskins has also been very active as a dad in District 91. He founded the fabulously fun and inspirational Juneteenth Family Pool Party in 2008 as a way to showcase this town’s unifying and powerful diversity.

We don’t mind for a minute that Hoskins, an attorney, has a fulltime job downtown. Being mayor was never intended as a full-time job. While he says he has the flexibility to make any meeting, we like the idea of a village administrator fronting the village’s day-to-day operations and a mayor and council focused on policy decisions.

It heartens us to hear Hoskins’ view on the obsolete commissioner form of government bending toward the Review’s longtime position. Whether he moves us directly toward a referendum on the topic is less important than his clear message to village department heads and staff that they are valued and respected professionals and that he and the new council members will let them work.

Forest Park has had a sub-par village council for far too long. We are recommending a mix of incumbents and newcomers who, directed away from staff meddling, will be empowered as leaders helping to set and debate an actual agenda for the future.

A word about Chris Harris, the other mayoral candidate this year.

It is always good to have a contested election and Harris, to date, has run a credible and positive campaign. We admire his past efforts to engage residents in important town hall discussions. That urge toward transparency and dialogue is essential in this divided town.

Our hope is that Harris will remain active and that as mayor, Rory Hoskins will look for ways to involve him.

It’s hard to argue against incumbent Joe Byrnes serving another term as village commissioner but in a tough field he does not make our cut. Byrnes is probably the most decent guy in town. Whether he’s buying cookies from the Girl Scouts, or attending the Cub Scouts pancake dinner, he’s engaged with every segment of the community.

His time in the Air Force and decades on the Forest Park police department have shaped his attitude of service. He has the capacity to bridge the gap between those forand against-video gaming, as well as those who have proudly lived in town for generations and more recent arrivals.

operations. It’s obvious he’s learned from his time as head of the village’s traffic and safety commission. He also is a member of the ad hoc committee on the Altenheim property. He would be the perfect person to advocate for Forest Park down in Springfield, since he is a knowledgeable professional and effective communicator.

Incumbents Kelly, Medina, Wagner earn reelection Most people familiar with Proviso Township High Schools District 209’s history of patronage, corruption and rank incompetence will agree that the district as it exists now is not the district that we remember from just five years ago.

The district now has an A+ bond rating to complement its once-in-a-lifetime plan for identifying the district’s most pressing capital needs and what appears to be a sound financial strategy for addressing them. An equitable approach to funding the district’s three campuses, which means that more money for East and West (where it’s needed most) than for PMSA. New textbooks. Laptops for all students.

A deliberate strategy for including parents in students’ school lives through the implementation of parent centers and parent coordinators at East and West. Innovative curricula, such as the pioneering Marzano Academy at Proviso East.

There are more concrete, measurable achievements that have taken place in D209 within the last four years than we have space enough to list. For that, Proviso Together’s crop of candidates — sitting board members Theresa Kelly, Ned Wagner and Claudia

ou may notice, elsewhere in the Review this week, the results of several endorsement interviews the editorial staff completed. It had me wondering, how good is the Review at actually picking who the citizens of Forest Park feel are the best to serve their beloved community?

In the last seven mayoral elections, only four were contested. Of those, only twice has the Review-endorsed mayoral candidate been elected mayor. As predictable as a coin flip. Since 1991, every commissioner race has been contested (ranging from as many as 12 candidates to as few as five). Only once in the commissioner race, did the Review make a perfect match between endorsements and the will of the voters (2007). In 2011 the Review’s endorsement match percentage was weakest — of the 11 commissioner candidates running, they picked two of the four who were elected. As for D91, you have to go all the way back to 2003 to find endorsements, and that year, two of the three endorsements matched the choice of the voters in town.

As voters pick candidates to represent our small, charming town, we weigh message, evaluate overall intelligence, ability to work with others, compromise skills, being in touch with Forest Park sensibilities, and how well they resonate with our sense of honesty, style, articulation, delivery and courage in the face of adversity.

This year there are several excellent candidates running for office to serve our community. And there is a great resource on the Forest Park Review website with candidates’ submitted answers to questions, which is outstanding. This resource, straight from the candidates

themselves, will be printed and made available at the last forum, held this Thursday, March 21 at the Middle School at 6:30 p.m.

I am grateful to the candidates and community for keeping the negative campaigning game and bullying to a minimum; it reflects that we are becoming a much healthier community. There might be a red herring tossed into the mix still, but overall the sign-stealing, whispering, and fear mongering has been at its lowest in memory. Maybe we have matured a bit? Plus, this has been the best field of candidates I have ever seen in town, and that alone gives me great pride in Forest Park.

In 1991, Dr. James Murray, the weekly columnist and handwriting analysist explored candidate leadership styles through their handwriting. While picking a candidate is serious, a little levity can go a long way. So think of a personality question to ask at the last forum this Thursday. Here are a few I might submit: ■■ If you had a superhero power, what would it be and why?

■■ Choose between the ’85 Bears and ’95-’96 Bulls ■■ What breakfast defines you?

■■ What makes a person a “good citizen” of Forest Park?

■■ If your child felt bullied by another child or group of children, what advice would you give him/her?

■■ What is your favorite cartoon character?

■■ Do you have any weaknesses?

We are in the last weeks of this election campaign, and I feel really confident about Forest Park in the next four years, even though I am not exactly clear what it will look like. Medina — earn our proud endorsement, as they have in the previous two election cycles.

Proviso United’s Laighton Scott, Denard Wade and Beverly Robertson are all solid, grassroots candidates who have brought to the forefront some valid criticisms of the current board majority.

Their most searing critique is the enduring inequity between PMSA, the district’s magnet school, and East and West — despite the board’s laudable work to address this inequity at the margins.

We feel that the current board, taken aback by public backlash, shied away from seriously evaluating the long-term feasibility of maintaining the converted office building that is PMSA’s current campus. And the board has still not adequately confronted the toll that this PMSA/East-West demarcation takes on the students who don’t attend the magnet school.

The Proviso United candidates — when not weighted down by the toxic negativity of their campaign’s behind-the-scenes handlers — were at their best when deploying their unique insight as engaged, on-the-ground community members to some of the district’s ongoing challenges.

Despite, at times, what appeared to be a rather glaring lack of preparation and engagement with some issues, particularly the district’s finances, the Proviso United candidates (not the campaign) have nonetheless earned our respect. And we hope that they and Proviso Together can get over their differences and seriously address the challenges that were highlighted in this campaign season — for the sake of the students.

Sandy Aguirre, the only unaffiliated candidate in the race, was too emotionally charged, too woefully unprepared and too mysteriously close to the power players of D209’s sordid past to earn our serious consideration.

Beautiful additions and painful losses My name is Julianne Bonwit and I’m running for Village Commissioner. Forest Park became home to my husband Andy and me over nine years ago. And in those nine years, our lives have seen beautiful additions and painful losses.

We started our family here in Forest Park and now have an amazing seven-

year-old and a spunky four-year-old. I experienced two miscarriages, lost one of my three brothers, and both my father and Andy’s mother within this time.

Caffe De Luca, watching the No Glove softball tournament at the park, racing down waterslides at the pool, buying Lemonheads at Ferrara Pan, grocery shopping at Ed’s way, participating in the Kiwanis’s soap box derby, trick or treating down Madison St. or smelling Kay’s bakery from my front porch I LOVE FOREST PARK!!!!!!!

I am running for Commissioner because I want to be a part of the team that leads this Village into a prosperous future. I used these skills as a case manager for homeless adults, as an outreach worker for runaway teens, as a medical social worker for HIV+ adolescents, and as a social worker for abused and neglected children in service organizations and in private practice with adults and children dealing with depression, anxiety and trauma.

We are so lucky to have a Village where there is so much interest in and care for our community, where the interest is so great that there are seven men and two women running for Village Commissioner. I do believe we have reached a time in our Village history when the experience of a social worker could truly benefit the well-being of all who live here in our community.
