f you look at a picture of the District 91 school board, you’ll notice that there is only one person of color among the seven board members. For that reason, some Forest Parkers criticize the board for not representing the demographics of our village, for not being diverse enough. Five women — four of whom are currently board members and one who is running unopposed in the April 4 election, sat down with the Review to explain that you can’t always tell a diversity book by its cover. Shannon Wood, for example, is white but her husband is biracial and so are her two children. “I haven’t ever noticed that people think a biracial family is not normal,” she began, “but my husband has.” Then she added, “Early on when we were dating, we had some family members say you can date but you can’t get married. And then they said we could get married but we couldn’t have children. They’re no longer a big part of my life because I don’t have time for closed minds. “Some people don’t like other people because of the way they look, which is unfortunate because if you look past the cover of the book and you get to know somebody, you might be missing a great friend or learn a lot from them.” See D91 BOARD on page 10

hyllis Malahy Cormack didn’t start out to be a pioneer but, in many ways, she became a female trailblazer. In the 1960s, she was a single-mom who worked two jobs. She later became a career woman, working in community relations for Metra. She was special in so many ways, not only raising five children by herself but becoming the “neighborhood mom” to many of their friends. Kids flocked to Cormack’s twobedroom apartment in Oak Park. “It was a crazy time,” her daughter Cate Judson recalled of the late-’60s, “And we were always bringing home friends.” Kids who were uncomfortable talking with their own parents, could always confide in Cormack. “She was a good listener and could see people’s needs,” Judson continued. “Our home was broken and she knew that other families had problems. Her story was parallel to other people’s lives in Oak Park and Forest Park that didn’t go as planned.” It seemed Cormack’s life-long plan was to prosper in Oak Park. She was born there on October 13, 1929, just 11 days before the Great Crash that started the Depression. “She was the original ‘DOOPer’ [Dear Old Oak Parker], Judson recalled. “She loved OPRF and had a lot of extended family in Oak Park.” After graduating high school in 1947, she attended Loyola University. In 1952, she married Robert Cormack and they moved to far-off Addison. The marriage didn’t work out, so Cor-

Phyllis Cormack, 1929-2017. mack moved back to her support system in Oak Park. One of her sources of support were the Al-Anon meetings, where she became life-long friends with many ex-wives of alcoholics. Among these longtime friends was Gina Millette. “Phyllis had a magnetic personality and made each of her friends feel like they were her best friend,” Millette recalled. “But we always knew her family came first.” Friends often gathered at her apartment, but Cormack wouldn’t join them until her sons Mike and Matt were comfortably asleep. Cormack was adamant that her children get a college education and strived very hard to help them. “She was there for every one of the kids, whenever they needed her,” Millette said, “and the love was returned in the wonderful care she received from all of them, especially in the last year and a half.” By that time, the dyed-in-the-wool DOOPer had moved to a condo in Forest Park. The town turned out to be a good fit for her. Her granddaughters, Rebecca and Melissa, lived there. “She loved celebrating the holidays,” Judson recalled. “She loved music in the park, parades and festivals.” She also doted on her other grandchildren, Morgan and Mitchell. Cormack traveled to Ireland, England and the Grand Canyon. She went to Australia to help Judson recover from a hip replacement. “She was fiercely loyal to friends and her children,” Judson said. “She was like a lioness with her cubs.” Working full time, Cormack saw that men were getting paid more than women and fought hard for equal pay. She transitioned from working jobs to starting a career when State Senator Phil Rock sponsored her for a position at the newly-created Metra transit system. It was 1981 and Cormack was 48 years old when she started working in the Community Affairs Department. Her longtime

colleague, Harry Thomas, recalled she was very resourceful and always prepared. “Her humanity stood out and her Irish sense of humor was always there,” Thomas recalled. “She was phenomenal at public relations and knew how to get villages to build parking lots for Metra stations.” That was Cormack’s difficult task: persuading villages along the right-of-way to construct commuter lots. She initiated the “Kiss ’N’ Ride” program and started programs to revitalize Metra stations. “She was very savvy and very diplomatic,” Judson recalled. “She would dress very glamorously just to stand on train platforms to pass out schedules.” Cormack worked at Metra for 17 years, retiring at the age of 70. Cormack later endured some physical struggles, surviving lung cancer on three occasions. But nothing got her down. Her parish priest recalled, “She always had a twinkle in her eye. She was a bit outspoken but you always knew where she stood.” After Cormack obtained her annulment and began receiving communion again, her relationship with the church healed. “However,” her son John added, “Phyllis never doubted the message of Jesus: love, charity, justice and above all forgiveness.” “She was warm, life-loving and very positive,” her son King said. “Despite a lot of hard knocks, she never complained about anything.” He recalled how “a bunch of hellions” used to hang out at their apartment and how they came in droves to her wake and funeral after Cormack died on Jan. 4, 2017 at the age of 87. “It’s hard to say goodbye to my dear friend,” Millette wrote. “Thank you for being my friend, Phyllis. I will always remember the sparkle in your eyes, that beautiful smile and wonderful laughter.” ■ John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. D209 board hopefuls spar on finances, skin in the game The two competing slates meet face-to-face at candidates forum By MICHAEL ROMAIN

or roughly an hour on Saturday, the Quinn Community Center in Maywood hosted the rarest of events — a forum where all eight candidates running for the four open seats on the District 209 school board race showed up. Sparks flew as soon as the moderator asked the first question, which appeared to have been drawn up by someone in the audience. Did the candidates have children in either District 89 elementary schools (which comprise Maywood, Melrose Park and Bellwood) or the District 209 high schools? On the campaign trail, the four candidates running on the Proviso Together ticket — challengers Sam Valtierrez of Melrose Park, Arbdella “Della” Patterson of Maywood, Rodney Alexander of Bellwood, and Amanda J. Grant of Westchester — have reinforced the fact that some of their opponents have children who attend private schools. Sitting board members Brian Cross, Dan

Intimidation doesn’t work. Why do you want so bad to be on a board of a district you don’t even send your kids to?” SAM VALTIERREZ

Proviso Together candidate

Adams and Teresa McKelvy are running for re-election, along with challenger Jacqueline Walton, who noted that her 40-year-old no longer attends school. “If you’re going to sit on a school board and make decisions for other people’s children, then your children should go to the [district’s] public schools,” said Patterson, who noted that her three adult children all graduated from Proviso Township High Schools. “I would suggest you sit on the board of education where you send your children.” Proviso First candidates countered that not having a child in the district shouldn’t disqualify them from serving on the board. “I don’t think I have to have a child attending these schools in order to help the children,” Walton said. “I’ve also helped the children even though I had a business on the side.” Brian Cross, a sitting board member, said the question “was extremely distasteful.” “That’s a decision Sandy [his late wife] and I made,” he said. “I’m going to stand by that decision.” McKelvy said her son’s decision to attend a private high school was his to make, adding that her younger son, who attends Macarthur Middle School in Berkeley, wants to go to Proviso West or Proviso Math and Science Academy. “When it was time for [her older son] to go to high school, we asked him where he wanted to go,” McKelvy said. “He wanted to be in a different environment. He said to me, ‘Mom, I’ve been in this school district for eight years. I want a change of pace. I want to do it my way and make new friends.’ We have another son who wants to go to West or PMSA, but should he change his mind, then I’ll send him where he wants to go.” Alexander and Grant said their children, who are currently in elementary school, will be attending Proviso Township high schools in the future. Valtierrez said his children attended District 89 and D209 schools. Another major focal point of discussion was the state of the district’s finances. When the moderator asked what each candidate would do to keep the district from going bankrupt again, candidates from both parties pushed back against the question’s implication. “It is fiction that our district is bankrupt and that we are having financial problems,”

said McKelvy. “We are not having financial problems. Our budget is balanced and when we vote on the budget, it’s approved by seven board members. It’s on all of us, not just three of us. We have 56 percent of our funds in reserves in our round balance. That is not what broke school districts do.” Patterson cautioned against characterizing the district as “bankrupt,” adding that she wasn’t aware that the district’s financial condition had slipped into that state. She did, however, advocate for the district keeping the state-appointed Financial Oversight Panel in place — even though she said she was dissatisfied with what she considered to be political appointments made to that board. “Sitting board members don’t have authority to remove the FOP,” Patterson said. “The state sent it here. It can stay here for up to 10 years. We’re close to that, if I remember correctly. It’s been eight years. I was one of the people who went down to Springfield to make sure the FOP had the authority to hire and fire the superintendent and business manager. I’ve watched the oversight panel do some things I’m uncomfortable with because they’ve got political appointments [but] I think they need to stay.” “I like the FOP and wish it were stronger,” said Grant, who criticized what she also characterized as political appointments made to the panel. “We would like to end that. We need an oversight panel [that’s independent and that should be in place] until the district is run in a financially sound and transparent way.” For some members of the Proviso First committee, the March 18 forum was an opportunity to vent their frustrations with the Proviso Together slate. “I’m not mad at these people running against me,” said McKelvy. “I don’t know these people, but every time I turn around, they’re attacking our character. They don’t know whether we have concerns for these children or not. All of us have concerns for these children. … For some strangers who I have never met to attack our integrity and accuse us of not caring about our schools is unconscionable. I care very much about our students.” During an interview earlier this month, the Proviso Together slate vented about their own perceived mistreatment during

the campaign, particularly pointing out campaign literature and a robo-call that attempts to connect the Together candidates to Republicans like Gov. Bruce Rauner and President Donald Trump. On his Facebook page, Cross shares an email link to a landing page that includes a small puppy beneath the caption, “Dan Proft is up to his old tricks in Proviso, but this time, That dog won’t hunt!!! [sic].” Below the image, a statement signed by the four Proviso First candidates blasts an article published in the West Cook News, a controversial right-wing media outlet that identifies as a newspaper. The article, which lacks a reporter’s byline, mentions that McKelvy, Adams and Cross “approved $94.6 million in spending for fiscal year 2015, a $20.1 million increase from 2011,” adding that “the property tax assessment levied by the district on homeowners increased by 69 percent.” The article mentions no other board members and doesn’t include any context for the reported increase. It also references another media outlet’s investigation revealing that “100 percent of the [D209] school board whose voting history could be identified voted Democrat in the most recent primary elections.” “This fake news operations is run by Dan Proft through his political action committee, the ‘Liberty Principles Pac,’” writes the Proviso First candidates in the joint statement. “We need your help to stop Governor Rauner’s Cronies from taking over our schools [sic].” The statement doesn’t explicitly mention the Proviso Together slate or any individual candidates by name. During the March 8 interview, held at the Forest Park Review offices during the paper’s endorsement process, the Proviso Together candidates swatted away their opponents’ campaign tactics. The Proviso First slate did not respond to the paper’s requests to sit for an interview. “They feed off of people’s ignorance,” said Valtierrez. “They’ll make something up and send out a $5,000 to $6,000 mailer. We don’t have that kind of money. We have to walk, knock on doors, talk to people. They’ll intimidate you. Intimidation doesn’t work. Why do you want so bad to be on a board of a district you don’t even send your kids to?” “The three incumbents all have children at private schools and you have people who suddenly emerge when it’s election time,” said Grant. “They don’t even go to their own school’s events. They’re going to do what they do, but at the end of the day, they have to run on their record. They will be held to account.” During Saturday’s forum, Proviso First candidates insisted that the campaign be about their board performance and not about where their children are educated. “Just because we don’t have a kid [in the district] doesn’t mean we [don’t want to do what’s best] for the community,” said Adams. “We’re all parents here.” CONTACT: michael@oakpark.com

Cemeteries, local police more vigilant these days Rise in anti-Semitism incidents elsewhere have not afflicted Forest Park David Penzell, director of operations at Waldheim Cemetery, reported that there have been no threats or acts of vandalism at the cemetery to date. He said the Forest Park Police Department is aware of antiSemitic acts plaguing the Chicago area and have stepped up their patrols of the Jewish cemetery. “The Forest Park Police have been wonderful,” Penzell said. “They’ve been very responsive.” The cemetery is also working with North Riverside police and the Broadview Police Department, as sections of the cemetery lie in their jurisdictions. Still, the threat of vandalism has been worrisome for the cemetery’s clients. “Members of our customer base have been calling up scared,” Penzell said. “They have their loved ones laid to rest here and they’re looking for reassurance.

We tell them everything’s OK and our words and tonality reassures them.” Many of the callers are elderly, and Penzell noted the perpetrators of hate crimes seek out the weakest segments of society. “They go after children, the elderly and, in our case, the deceased. They don’t have respect, or tolerance, for others and commit these crimes to promote a cause.” Penzell said there were thousands of hate crimes in the U.S. in 2015 but only 20 percent of them were religious in focus. However, there has been an increase in anti-Semitic acts in 2017 since the presidential election. “The 24-hour news cycle feeds this type of behavior,” Penzell believes. “Our main office has been in Forest Park since the late 1800s. This is our home. The cemetery isn’t going anywhere. Thankfully, our neighbors have been supportive.”

Woman charged with credit card fraud A 19-year-old woman who worked at Ultra Foods, 7520 Roosevelt Road, has been charged with credit card fraud after she reportedly used a fellow employee’s credit card to make unauthorized purchases at the store. The victim told police he was using his smartphone to pay bills in the break room of the store on Feb. 23 and accidentally left a credit card on the table. On March 12, his bank contacted him to alert him to some possibly fraudulent purchases. Surveillance cameras reportedly showed the offender taking the credit card and then using it to make two purchases at the store three days later. The offender reportedly wouldn’t tell police when they questioned her on March 14 where the credit card was because “she did not want to get anyone else in trouble.” ■■A 77-year-old Forest Park man on March 15 told police that someone had obtained debit card information and made three cash withdrawals at Walgreens, 7200 Roosevelt Road, in 2016. According to the victim, the withdrawals and ATM fees amounted to about $615. The victim also said he filed a report in Oak Park about a withdrawal made there.

Attempted break-ins ■■Forest Park police responded to a home in the 400 block of Circle Avenue on March 14 about 3:30 p.m. after a resident called to report an attempted break-in. Police reported that someone had taken a garbage can from the alley and placed it underneath a window to the residence. Several window screens appeared to have been opened, but no entry was gained to the house. Police also reported a palm print on one of the windows. ■■A resident of the 7400 block of Randolph Street called police on March 16 to report two suspicious incidents leading him to believe someone was trying to break into his apartment. According to the resident, he returned home just after midnight on March 8 and noticed that the front door knob to his apartment was loose and broken. However, he wasn’t concerned until March 15 when he returned home to find gouges in the deadbolt and door that appeared to have been made by someone trying to pry open the door with a screwdriver.

Man charged with theft at Walmart, again A 43-year-old Berwyn man on parole for a 2016 retail theft conviction faces new felony retail theft charges after he allegedly stole four wireless speakers valued at $159 from Walmart, 1300 Desplaines Ave., on March 17 about 5:40 p.m.

According to the police report, Jameica Brown stole the speakers from the store and fled the scene, pursued by an employee. Police located Brown inside a nearby fast food restaurant and arrested him. The employee reportedly identified Brown as the offender and directed police to a bush where Brown had allegedly dumped the stolen merchandise along with his jacket. Brown reportedly has been arrested three times for theft at the Forest Park Walmart between 2011 and 2016. In 2011 and 2013, police had reportedly issued him trespass warnings. Brown is being held at Cook County Jail with his bond set at $30,000.

Theft suspect reportedly assaults store clerk A 22-year-old Oak Park man arrested for allegedly attempting to steal cigarettes from a Roosevelt Road convenience store on March 17 about 10:30 p.m. also faces assault and battery charges after he allegedly wrestled with a store clerk and kicked the police officer who arrested him. Police said the offender swung and missed on two attempts to punch a clerk at the 7-Eleven and then wrestled the clerk, who confronted him about the theft attempt, to the ground. Police separated the two and took the offender into custody. On the way to the police station, the offender allegedly proceeded to kick at the windows of the squad car and then reportedly kicked the arresting officer as he was walked into the station for processing. The officer reportedly reacted by striking the offender in the forehead and the offender was later taken to the hospital after complaining of dizziness.

Battery A 40-year-old man contacted police on March 16 to report he’d been injured during an incident at Shortstop Lounge, 7425 Madison St., sometime after midnight on March 12. The victim told police he’d confronted another man who was reportedly being rude to a female bar patron, exchanging heated words with him before the other man stomped down on his left leg, causing broken bones and ligament damage that he didn’t realize until he got home. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, March 13-19, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

ooking ahead to April: Waiting for Godot will be on stage at Dominican on April 6, 7, 8 and 9. This puzzling, unforgettable, thought-provoking tragicomedy should be seen at least once. What’s it all about? Performance times are: Thursday preview, 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 3 p.m. Tickets are $17; students $5. Coming soon: Massimo Faggioli, PhD, will speak on “The Ecclsiology of Pope Francis” on March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Priory Auditorium. Dr. Fagioli also writes regularly for several newspapers and journals. Any questions about performances at Dominican? Call 708-488-5000 or email boxoffice@dom.edu. “I had grown up absolutely in a bubble,” she said, “and I think that has made me want to expose my kids to a more diverse environment.” Her claim to diversity is that she is a lot younger than everyone else on the D91 board. “People on boards like this one tend to be older,” she explained. “I bring age diversity since I’m younger than the other board members by a decade. I represent a demographic that is very prevalent in Forest Park but which hasn’t always had representation on boards.” The fact that her family rents, she added, makes her a part of a demographic in town that might not always have a voice commensurate with its size. “One of the things in this community that is important regarding diversity,” she said, “is owning a home vs. renting. In Forest Park, 50% of the residents rent the space where they are living and their representation on boards and commissions is a lot less than half. I think there is a perception that the only people who rent in Forest Park are young people who stay for a year or two and then move on, but I don’t think that’s actually true. Part of my concern is to represent renters as well as home owners.”

Wood thinks that the growing edge in our society in terms of diversity might be religious affiliation. “When I pick up my older daughter from Grant-White,” she explained, “I see three women who wear a hijab. They generally keep a low profile. It seems that they feel on guard. That makes me feel bad because they sit together in their own little group. I can’t imagine what that feels like because visually they are wearing something that separates them.” Mary Connor described the three men on the board, who were not present for the interview, this way: “Rafael Rosa grew up in Kentucky but is of Central American heritage. Blake Harvey is Caucasian, but he and his wife have two Korean sons they adopted as infants.” She jokingly called her husband, Eric Connor, a “boring white guy” who grew up in the Beverley neighborhood in Chicago and went to all Catholic schools until he attended law school. Come to think of it, though, that makes him just as much a minority as everyone else on the board. Tom Holmes, in addition to writing regularly for the Forest Park Review, is a member of the Forest Park Diversity Commission.

Students battle police on St. Paddy’s Day! But it was all in good fun as middle-schoolers challenge officers to a hoops contest By JOHN RICE

M

Contributing Reporter

arch Madness was on display at the Middle School on St. Patrick’s Day when students faced off against Forest Park police officers on the basketball court. The game was the brainchild of seventh-graders Treasure Brown and Oxavionne Bryant. “We did it to create peace with the police and build relationships in the community,” Brown said. Bryant is the 6-foot center for Middle School’s conference-winning basketball team. “Our season was over,” he said, “so we decided to play the police in a basketball game.” “We got all of the teachers and students involved,” Brown added. Tyler Vanderbilt started things off by singing the national anthem. During the game, students sold popcorn to purchase books for kids in foster care. Others organized games during timeouts, like Hungry Hippos, a human wheelbarrow race, and a Hula Hoop contest. The dance troupe performed at halftime and the band played throughout the game. Not only did every student participate but school board members and District 91 officials were in the stands watching. Brown and Bryant personally invited Supt. Lou Cavallo TREASURE BROWN and his staff to attend. They 7th grader also gave a personal invitations to the police. Eight officers played, wearing navy blue shirts, bearing their names and numbers and a green four-leaf clover. The middle-schoolers rotated their line-up. In the first quarter, students who had won a raffle competed against the police. In the second quarter, high honor roll students took the floor. The third quarter featured students who had helped with the project. For the final quarter, players who had been chosen by a student survey hooped it up with the officers. Bryant was a member of the “all-star squad” who kept it close. The game was actually tied at the end of regulation but the police won it in overtime with a three-pointer. Bryant described the police officers as being “tall and buff ” with one towering over him at 6-6. The police were great sports, going into the stands during timeouts to introduce themselves to the spectators. Seventh-grade teachers Ed Bagley and Dan Staser helped organize the event. “It was a great success,” Bagley said. “The students met their goal of establishing a good relationship with the police department.” Bryant would agree but still thinks he was fouled on a lay-

Meet and greet Proviso Together Samuel Valtierrez, Amanda Grant, Abdella “Della” Patterson, and Rodney Alexander will be on hand, Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m., at the Park District of Forest Park building, 7501 Harrison St. Refreshments will be served: Brown Cow Ice Cream, Silverland Brownies, wine from Famous Liquors, Piekarz coffee, Twisted Cookie. Haven’t registered to vote? Vanessa Moritz, our village clerk, confirmed that Election Day registration is in effect if you do it at your designated precinct location. Bring two forms of ID that prove where you live, like a utility statement or lease with your current address. Connie Brown gave the following information about voting early: “Early voting starts on Monday, March 20 through Monday, April 3. You are able to vote early in Maybrook, Bellwood and Melrose Park between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday.” There are five important reasons for the whole village to vote on or before April 4: 1. Our children deserve a better high school. 2. Our parents deserve a quality high school so they don’t have to pay for a private one. 3. Forest Park loses too many parents when the kids approach eighth grade, right at the time those parents are ready to become leaders in Forest Park. 4. Our property values will soar. 5. There is a political machine in Proviso Township that has lots of money to spend, has slated four candidates opposing the Proviso Together slate and has not been the best steward of our tax dollars. Exhibit A: An article dated May 6, 2016 on the Chronicle Media website reported Continued on page 15

Transforming D209 will transform Forest Park

sk anyone who has been around this town for a while, “What’s the biggest impediment to Forest Park progressing much, much further than it already has?” and they will tell you, “Proviso East High School.” My fellow Forest Parkers, I’m hosting a big meet-andgreet with the Proviso Together candidates for the District 209 high school board (which is responsible for Proviso East) on March 29 because I believe we have an opportunity to transform Proviso East High School and thereby transform Forest Park. I used to be pessimistic about Proviso East and believed trying to change that institution would be a waste of time, but our neighbors here in Forest Park, Ned Wagner and Claudia Medina, joined together with Theresa Kelly to form a strong minority on the D209 school board and have already had a huge impact by leveraging the hiring of Jesse Rodriguez as D209 superintendent and Patrick Hardy as the principal of Proviso East. The stars seem to be aligned, so to speak, in a way that makes dreaming about the future of Proviso East no longer an exercise in naïve fantasy. If we can elect Valtierrez, Alexander, Patterson and Grant — or even one of them — we’ll have a majority on the D209 board, which would guarantee that Proviso East High School will continue to move in the right direction for the first time in 40 years. I urge you to come to the meet-and-greet on March 29 and bring four friends along with you because once you hear both their intelligence and their passion, you will not only vote for the Proviso Together candidates on April 4, but you will also be energized to tell your friends that we have something special going on here. This time around, urging friends and neighbors to vote is crucial because as the pie graphs in last week’s Review reveal, when there is no mayoral election in Forest Park, the voter turnout is usually low, and in this election a higher voter turnout is critical.

Celebrating 100 Years

Continued from page 13 that “A lawsuit against the Proviso Township High School District 209 School Board contains evidence that both the … school superintendent [Nettie Collins Hart who preceded the current superintendent] and the former board president [who is not aligned with the Proviso Together group] signed a multimillion-dollar building repairs contract without the knowledge or formal approval of the school board.” The unauthorized contract was given to Franklin Park-based Restore Construction, which has given thousands of dollars to the Melrose Park-based political machine, which is supporting a slate of candidates opposing Proviso Together. “School board presidents have no legal authority to authorize large payments on behalf of a school district without a formal vote by the school board, according to the Illinois school law.” Exhibit B: Until last year, Proviso East students were using textbooks that were 20 years old. Exhibit C: According to a front page article in last week’s Review, the slate of candidates (Proviso First, which opposes Proviso Together) have received thousands of campaign dollars from sources outside of Proviso Township. I have friends who are cynical about any kind of voting and say, “Voting doesn’t do any good; it won’t make a difference.” Friends and neighbors, that might be true about the gerrymandered congressional districts we’re stuck with for the time being, but our neighbors, Claudia Medina and Ned Wagner, have shown us that ordinary citizens with little money can make change happen. People like Connie Brown, who, behind the scenes, is managing the Proviso Together campaign, and Frank Hanson, who is spending weekends knocking on doors, and many other ordinary folks like you and me are making this dream a reality. I’m inspired, and that’s why I’m investing my own time and money in hosting this event at the park building on Harrison Street on March 29. Hope to see you there.
