A Fenwick High School graduate has called for the firing of a prominent teacher and former boys basketball coach after what she says were multiple instances of inappropriate physical contact made by the teacher, John Quinn, in 2012 and 2014.

Harlem Avenue resurfacing underway Months-long project will cause traffic delays from 26th Street to North Avenue

Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) crews have begun work on what will be a summerlong project to resurface and repair Harlem Avenue through a handful of suburban communities, including Oak Park and River Forest.

The $5.7 million project was slated to begin on Tuesday, March 29 and is expected to last through late October, according to IDOT. Officials described the work as normal maintenance on a “heavily traveled” patch of road that was last resurfaced in 2012.

Work will be done on a 4.5-mile stretch traversing the communities of Berwyn, Riverside, North Riverside, Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest. The resurfacing work is scheduled to be done Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include installing new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk ramps and replacing deteriorated curbs.

The project also includes deck repairs on the Harlem Avenue bridge over the Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290). That portion of the work is scheduled to be done overnight and will not impact pedestrian access to the Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line station at Harlem, IDOT says.

to completely reimagine the highway crossing at Harlem Avenue as part of a major rebuilding of the highway, something that gained renewed traction with the passage of a multi-billion-dollar federal infrastructure package last year. IDOT officials say the current work on the Harlem Avenue bridge is unrelated to any future projects involving I-290.

Traffic is expected to be limited on Harlem Avenue throughout this resurfacing, although the roadway will remain open in both directions at all times and access to residences and local businesses will not be restricted.

There will be “intermittent daytime closures,” however, and IDOT recommended travelers budget extra time to get through the area for the foreseeable future. Motorists are urged to pay close attention to workers in the area and obey all posted speed limits.

In the next six years, IDOT is scheduled to improve more than 3,500 miles of Illinois roadway and 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of a campaign known as Rebuild Illinois. In the first two years of the $33.2 billion project involving a variety of modes of transportation, IDOT has performed more than $5 billion in improvements on 3,000plus statewide highway miles and 270 bridges.

Slow closure for Chef Gaetano’s Artisan Foods Reinvention is on the horizon for the veteran chef

In mid-March, Chef Gaetano Di Benedetto announced his namesake market, Chef Gaetano’s Artisan Foods at 7636 Madison St. in Forest Park, will permanently close after selling down its stock of pastas, sauces, cheeses and house made limoncello. An exact date the niche Italian market will go dark has not yet been determined as pace of sales will drive the decision-making, but according to Di Benedetto that date is likely coming soon.

The artisan market opened in October 2020 after Di Benedetto closed the fine dining establishment bearing his name in response to pandemic volatility. He swiftly transformed the same space into a gourmet carry-out market known for peddling prepared foods including house-made breads, artisan sandwiches, bakery pizzas and pasta sauces. The pivot proved to be successful until pandemic restrictions

started to ease. When mask mandates lifted and people started to dine in restaurants again, Di Benedetto experienced a noticeable drop in business.

“This is a story of a pandemic and then not a pandemic,” said Di Benedetto matterof-factly. “This is like experiencing a death in a way. First, I killed the restaurant and now I am killing the market.”

The emotional chef was quick to express gratitude for his longtime customers and appreciates having had a place where he could “use his creativity” rather than churring out the “Alfredo sauces and chicken Vesuvio” commonly found on Italian American restaurant menus. Both incarnations of the Gaetano’s brand allowed Di Benedetto to cook the food he was most passionate about making. He considers the market closure to be a matter of survival and has started a GoFundMe to help support his staff as they brace for the eventual closure of the market.

Vehicle sticker deadline extended Village moves deadline to purchase sticker to April 22 as a result of reduced hours at village clerk’s office

Forest Park residents have a few extra weeks to purchase their 2023 vehicle sticker, an accommodation made by village officials because of reduced hours at the village clerk’s office.

The new deadline to display a new vehicle sticker is April 22, a three-week extension from the prior date.

Stickers need to be displayed on all resident vehicles. Renewals can be purchased online at forestpark.msicore360.

com/resident/#/signin. To do so, choose “Guest” when logging into the system and enter only your license plate number and the first three letters of your last name, exactly as they appear on vehicle renewal forms.

If changes are being made to vehicle registration or to purchase a sticker for a new vehicle, residents must visit the clerk’s office at village hall, 517 Desplaines Ave., during the reduced office hours of Monday through Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.

Chef Gaetano D. Benedetto has made the emotional decision to close his artisan market in Forest Park.

Though the closure is a sad milestone in a long career, Di Benedetto is gearing up for his next food-focused endeavor — Lazy Food Ventures. The new business model focuses on bringing chef-driven, shelf-stable, plant-based meals to the public. Di Benedetto and managing partner Nakul Napoor are just weeks away from their beta launch featuring “Gaetano’s flavors for home cooking.” The restaurant quality meals come in varieties including bolognese, Italian ramen and pistachio pesto. All the meals are plant-based, high in protein and cook in ten minutes. For example, a pouch of Lazy Food Venture’s carbonara boasts pea protein, vegan bacon, vegan eggs, vegan pecorino, almonds, coconut oil, brown rice, pepper and cauliflower. The meals are designed to be healthy for both people and the planet.

Chef and co-founder, Di Benedetto also serves of head of research and development for the company. He will retain the Forest Park building and transition it into a food lab where he will continue to de-

velop new recipes for Lazy Food Ventures.

He will be assisted in the food lab by Alicia Carlson who started as an intern at Gaetano’s market and just one other employee.

“This has been a long-time dream; I have been acting like a scientist since 2004,” said Di Benedetto who has a long history perfecting vegan meat and cheese alternatives. “I won’t have to worry about production; I can just close myself in a room and play.”

The business will have a robust e-commerce platform, but Di Benedetto and Napoor are clear the launch will have distinct local appeal. Folks interested in participating in the beta launch should sign up at lazycooker.com. Di Benedetto and Napoor have committed to donating 25% of sales during the launch to Gaetano’s GoFundMe. The official launch of Lazy Food Ventures is expected later this summer.

John Quinn released a statement through an attorney last week, touting his accomplishments as an educator and denying Pasin’s claims.

“John Quinn has given his heart and soul to teaching at Fenwick High School for over 40 years,” the statement reads.

“The recent accusation that John abused a Fenwick student over eight years ago is categorically false. John has never abused a Fenwick student, at any time or in any place. John looks forward to continuing in the profession to which he has devoted his entire career.”

Quinn, the younger brother of former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and a longtime employee of the school, was Fenwick’s boys basketball coach from 1985 to 2013 before being abruptly fired as coach. He has continued to work at the school as a social studies teacher since then.

Quinn was a decorated basketball coach before his firing, earning induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame in 2009. He also won a Golden Apple Award for his work as a social studies teacher in 1992.

In her video, which by the morning of April 5 had been viewed more than 42,000 times, Pasin read a letter she sent to Fenwick administrators in December 2021 that detailed the alleged abuse, calling for a full investigation and asking for Quinn to be fired from his job.

The Oak Park Police Department confirmed that Pasin filed a police report with authorities last year and said the report was sent to the state’s attorney’s office, which declined to press charges. Pasin, in her video, and a police report completed late in 2021 both indicated charges could not be pursued because the statute of limitations had expired.

According to a September 2021 police report, Pasin was made to feel uncomfortable on multiple occasions around Quinn, and she alleged that “Quinn was overly aggressive with her and would put his arm

around her neck with such force it would pull her body closer to his. [Pasin] further related Quinn would put his face directly next to her face, ultimately making cheek to cheek contact with her.”

In one incident, which occurred in the school’s basement after a school-sanctioned meeting Pasin was leading, Quinn allegedly hugged her and made comments that made Pasin uncomfortable, including “what is your love life like?” and “you are so beautiful.” “[Pasin] related she stated to Quinn that she was not interested in love or relationships like that and Quinn replied back to her, ‘Well we should change that,’” the police report says.

Peddicord did not comment further, instead referring to a statement he released on the night of March 29, apparently addressing Pasin’s video.

“As some of you know, [last week] a Fenwick alumna posted a video detailing her experience as a student at Fenwick and our handling of a serious matter involving a faculty member,” the statement reads.

“Please be assured that we took, and are taking, her allegations seriously and the inquiry into the incidents she describes is ongoing.”

Pasin said she felt bullied after a lawyer representing the school asked to speak with her last year, and she added that once she approached the school with her own attorney, the school “ghosted” her for two months before reaching out last week to conduct an interview, an opportunity Pasin said she declined. She called the school’s initial investigation inadequate and said it was “disappointing” and “immensely triggering.”

Peddicord did not respond to a request for follow-up comments this week.

‘Weird behavior’ not taken seriously, accusers say Pasin spoke to the Review this week regarding her allegation, the attention that has arrived at her doorstep since the release of the video and the school’s response to her report. The Review also spoke to a second former student who said she complained to a school counselor about Quinn’s behavior but was ignored.

Pasin said she spoke with her family immediately after the incident in the high school’s basement and considered reporting it to school administrators but declined to do so after Quinn was fired from his boys basketball coaching job, something Pasin believed was connected to an unrelated incident with a different student. Pasin said she assumed Quinn would not return to teaching either and she could put the incident behind her.

Fenwick has never commented specifically on why Quinn was fired as boys basketball coach.

“One night in 2019, my family was having dinner and my dad and my brothers were sharing fun stories from high school, and I just burst out crying because I felt like it hit me in the face that it wasn’t my experience and I felt like it wasn’t fair,” Pasin said. “I just burst out crying about this and it woke me up that this isn’t going to go away.”

Pasin and the second former student, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Review about the “arm thing” Quinn would do frequently with students, where he would hug them unannounced as they walked into his classroom. Pasin did not have Quinn as a teacher but said that when Quinn would see her walking past in the hallway, he would often leave his classroom, call out to her and do the “arm thing.”

“Everyone just accepted this behavior from him,” Pasin said. “The times where he didn’t do it to me [when I walked past his classroom], I most always saw him doing it to someone else.”

In her video, Pasin claimed Quinn’s habit of hugging her tightly was not unique to her and said that Quinn’s “arm thing,” which she called his “signature move,” was so widely known that students imitating Quinn in an annual school stage revue would act out the hug and headlock. Pasin added that Quinn “has harmed other people, and the school is well aware of his bad

“He grabs students in front of the whole Fenwick community and even to the point where he’s famous for it,” Pasin told the Review. “It’s against the law to do that so he’s breaking the law in plain sight and a lot of people don’t think it’s a big deal.”

The other former student the Review spoke with echoed that sentiment. She said she did not experience the kind of physical harassment Pasin described but said she was familiar with the “arm thing.”

The former student, who had Quinn as a teacher and graduated from the school in 2015, said Quinn made comments to her in class that made her uncomfortable, telling her in one incident that she wasn’t going to be able to understand a concept he was teaching because she “grew up without a father.” When she reported those comments to a school counselor, she felt they were not taken seriously.

“I reported that to my counselor and she said, ‘That’s kind of how he is,’” she said. “I told her that and it was just not really taken seriously at all.”

In Peddicord’s statement, he asked that anyone else with concerns contact Fenwick administrators. Peddicord’s statement did not mention Quinn or Pasin by name.

“The safety of the young people entrusted to our care is of the utmost importance to us,” Peddicord’s statement reads. “If anyone feels he or she has suffered abuse or other misconduct at Fenwick, we ask them to come forward with any information and to receive the help and healing they deserve.”

Peddicord said the school has received numerous responses to his March 29 statement.

“We have gotten a whole lot of commentary, and we’ve got to figure out which of them would rise to the level of being part of any further investigation,” he said.

Pasin cautioned against students cooperating with the Fenwick investigation, feeling that school officials were still not engaging in the process openly, and recommended that any other accusers contact the police.

Pasin also was not encouraged by the fact that Quinn had apparently been placed on leave but left the door open for Fenwick to do what she felt was right and terminate Quinn from his teaching job.

“I don’t trust Fenwick to fire him because this teacher has probably been put on leave so many times,” she told the Review. “If they fired him that would totally exceed my expectations. The history with him does not suggest they would fire him so if they did, I would be very happy and very grateful that I did everything I could to get a dangerous teacher out of the school. But I’m so weary because they have protected him for so long.”

Suspect in multiple armed robberies arrested Man apprehended after trio of similar incidents at 7-Eleven stores

Forest Park police, in conjunction with the West Suburban Drug and Gang Enforcement Task Force and Chicago Police Department’s Vehicular Hijacking Task Force, arrested a 29-year-old Chicago man accused of multiple armed robberies in Forest Park earlier this year.

Dominique Q. Brown, of Chicago, was taken into custody near Wells Street and Garfield Boulevard in Chicago on March 25. He was charged one

day later with two counts of armed robbery and one count of aggravated robbery. According to Forest Park police, Brown was already on parole for a 2016 armed robbery at the time of his arrest.

According to police, Brown perpetrated two armed robberies at the 7-Eleven convenience store, 7749 Roosevelt Road, on Feb. 5 and 7, and was being investigated for his involvement in a third robbery at a different 7-Eleven (205 Harlem Ave.) on Feb. 10. Brown allegedly displayed a handgun in two of

the three robberies.

Per a police report at the time of the incident, the thief in the Feb. 10 robbery was quickly located after a tracker was placed in a bag of stolen money.

When police caught up to the apparent thief ’s vehicle near Central Avenue and Jackson Boulevard in Chicago, however, the suspect fled on foot and was able to elude capture.

Brown was incarcerated at the Cook County Jail as of April 5 with a total bond of $1.6 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 14.

Repeat offender involved in DUI crash

A man with an active warrant out for his arrest related to a prior driving under the influence charge was involved in a violent collision on the border between Forest Park and Maywood early on the morning of March 28 and arrested for aggravated DUI. Officers were dispatched to the intersection of First Avenue and Bataan Drive around 4:30 a.m. and found two damaged vehicles — a Subaru station wagon and BMW SUV. The driver of the Subaru was pinned in their vehicle and had to be extricated by first responders. The driver of the BMW was found on the curb next to the vehicle and “immediately” told officers, “I don’t know what’s going on right now. I f—d up, I know.”

Officers later identified the man as Ruben Vera, 36, of Chicago, and found that he had an active warrant for his arrest related to a previous DUI. He also had no valid driver’s license and no insurance for his vehicle.

At the hospital, Vera told officers he was working in Chicago until 7 p.m. Sunday night, at which point he had “two or three” beers and headed to Schaumburg, leaving the city around 1 a.m. He could not account for the three-and-a-half hours between then and the time of the accident.

Vera later submitted a blood sample and was found to have a blood alcohol content above the legal limit to operate a vehicle.

He was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence and was also given citations for failure to reduce speed, driving without a valid driver’s license,

and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Man found dead on Blue Line train Forest Park police were dispatched to the Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line station, 711 Desplaines Ave., following a report of an unresponsive person on March 28 around 9:15 a.m.

Officers determined the 62-year-old man was deceased at the scene after failing to find a pulse. There were no obvious signs of injury or foul play. A capped hypodermic needle was found near the man’s feet and was photographed.

No official cause of death had been determined as of April 3, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Lost cellphone goes on spending spree A man who said he inadvertently left his phone in a Walmart bathroom was dismayed to find that his phone had apparently been used to rack up $2,000 in purchases using an online payment app.

The man contacted Forest Park police on the evening of March 28 and said he was at the Walmart, 1300 Desplaines Ave., several days earlier and had apparently left his phone in a toilet stall. Since then, the phone had been used by someone else to charge for “goods and services.”

The man’s bank requested that he file a police report and that Walmart review se-

curity camera footage in an effort to catch the culprit.

Man loses bitcoin in Instagram scam A police officer told a man “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” after the man was duped out of $300 in bitcoin and lost access to his Instagram account as part of an online scam.

According to a police report filed March 29, the man saw an advertisement on Instagram promising to give him $1,000 if he guessed a number correctly. The man did guess the correct number but was told he would have to turn over some bitcoin before he could collect the cash. In the process of doing so, the man was also somehow locked out of his Instagram account.

The man understood “the money is gone” but wanted to file a police report in order to regain access to his Instagram.

Intoxicated man irritates pool players

An man told police he was choked near a pool table at a bar in the 7600 block of Madison Street around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29.

The man, who told officers it was his birthday, met police outside the bar and began yelling at them while giving his statement. He told officers he was choked by a man in black clothing with an orange and black hat.

When officers went inside and spoke to a bartender, she told them the man, whom she believed was highly intoxicated, want-

ed to play pool but didn’t have any quarters. So he began grabbing the pool cues of paying customers. The other customers were upset by this, the bartender said, but she did not see any physical confrontation.

The man was sent home for the night and no one was arrested.

Large disturbance reported outside bar Between 15 and 20 people were reportedly yelling and pushing each other outside a bar in the 7300 block of Madison Street, not long after midnight on Wednesday, March 30.

Officers were dispatched to the scene and saw several of the bar’s security guards attempting to disperse the crowd.

The security guards later told officers that the incident began with a fight between two women inside the bar.

According to a police report, it took officers 20 minutes to eventually send the uncooperative crowd on its way. However, only a few minutes after the dispute was broken up, officers were sent to a nearby gas station where they observed some of the same people arguing at that location.

No citations were immediately issued and no one was arrested.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, March 28-30, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Bill would require schools to offer vegan, vegetarian options Bill clears Senate; will soon head to governor

Public schools in Illinois may soon be serving a lot more vegan and vegetarian meals, thanks to a bill that cleared the General Assembly Tuesday.

House Bill 4089 requires school districts to provide a plant-based lunch option that complies with federal nutritional requirements to any student who submits a prior request to the district asking for such an option.

Sen. David Koehler, D-Peoria, the lead Senate sponsor of the bill, said the proposal was meant to accommodate students with certain religious, cultural or health concerns.

But the bill drew some opposition from Republicans who called it an unfunded mandate on schools and argued that it could lead to even more dietary mandates.

Sen. Jason Barickman, R-Bloomington, said schools already have the authority

to offer plant-based food options because there is nothing in state law prohibiting it.

“And so if we’re going to embrace the notion of local control in allowing our local units of government to make their own decisions, here lies an example of where we can put that to work,” he said.

Sen. Jil Tracy, R-Quincy, pointed out that earlier in the day, the Senate Education Committee held a hearing on Senate Bill 4147 that would require schools to offer halal food options. That’s food deemed permissible under Islamic law.

“It makes you ponder, could you then have a Jewish kosher school-required option, or one that is specific to any religious following,” she said. “So it seemed to us, the Republicans in the Education Committee, that perhaps a task force to study this and how much it costs for a school district to do this, how much of a need there is, should be explored.”

But Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, argued that plant-based diets are generally

healthier for people and that passage of the bill could help promote healthier lifestyles.

“It doesn’t matter what ethnic group, what your religious background is. The fact of the matter is, it’s simply healthy eating,” she said.

Koehler said the impact of the bill might be minimal because there may be some districts in which no students ask for plant-based option. He also said there is little difference in the cost of plant-based foods compared to meat-based meals.

The bill previously passed 96-7 in the House on March 4. It passed the Senate Tuesday, 42-10, and next will be sent to Gov.

Lawmakers pass ban on withholding college transcripts Similar bill on high school records awaiting action

SPRINGFIELD — Graduates from Illinois colleges and universities may soon be able to access their transcripts even if they still owe money to the school they attended.

The Illinois House on March 29 gave its approval to a bill that had already cleared the Senate prohibiting higher education institutions from refusing to provide copies of student transcripts either to the current or former student or that student’s current or prospective employer.

The proposed change in Illinois comes as the Biden administration is considering limited changes to federal guidelines that have long encouraged colleges and universities to withhold transcripts from anyone who is delinquent on repaying certain student loans.

Senate Bill 3032, dubbed the Student Debt Assistance Act, would go further than the

Biden administration’s proposal by prohibiting the withholding of transcripts, or charging a higher fee for accessing those transcripts, on the grounds that the student owes the school any debt.

Rep. Bob Morgan, D-Deerfield, the chief House sponsor of the bill, said schools have not limited the practice just to collecting student loan debt but sometimes use transcripts as leverage to collect any debt, including library fines and parking tickets.

“It’s estimated that 6.6 million people in the country cannot get a copy of their transcript because they owe a debt to their college, sometimes as little as $25,” he said.

“Twenty-five dollars is keeping them from getting access to their transcripts.”

He said that can prevent students and graduates from being able to get a job and earn the money it takes to pay off their school debt.

The bill originally passed the Senate without opposition, 55-0. But Republicans

in the House raised concerns that the bill has no cap on the amount of money someone could still owe a school while still being able to access their transcripts. That, they said, could make it more difficult for schools to collect money owed to them, which could force them to raise tuition and fees on other students to make up for the loss.

“And that’s precisely what this is doing because somebody has to pay for that cost,” said Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville.

“And if those debts are outstanding, somebody has to pay for it in the meantime. In the long term, you know, they may pay it 10 years down the road or 20 years down the road, they may pay it off. But in the short term, current students are going to be paying that cost.”

Morgan, however, said the bill does not forgive a person’s debt, nor does it prohibit schools from using other methods of collecting what’s owed to them.

The bill passed the House 74-33 but was sent back to the Senate for concurrence with a minor technical amendment.

Meanwhile, a similar bill is pending in the Senate that would prohibit public high schools from withholding a student’s grades, transcripts or diploma because of an unpaid balance in the student’s school account.

House Bill 4243 passed out of the House 66-36 on March 4 and passed out of the Senate Education Committee March 29 on a 10-4 vote. If it clears the Senate, it would also have to be sent back to the House for concurrence with a minor amendment.

Attendees will learn how our brains are hard-wired to believe things that defy logic and facts, and Pack will also demonstrate how brains seek patterns to try and assign meaning out of nothing. He’ll also remind those in the audience of the scientifically proven ways to preserve brain health.

Music and motion storytime

Find the frogs Hop on over to the Trailside Museum of Natural History, 738 Thatcher Ave. in River Forest, on Friday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to search for the museum’s hidden amphibian friends.

Searchers are tasked with looking for frog statues, many of which are hidden in the gardens all around Trailside Museum, but there are plenty of actual frogs around too, there to serenade you as you search.

This event is free to attend.

Chamber Orchestra of Concordia University

Join the Forest Park Public Library at their outdoor storytime series for this live reading at Remembrance Park, at the intersection of Randolph Street and Circle Avenue, on Friday, April 8 from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

This storytime is designed for movers age 5 and under, who are sure to be up and going during this event, as long as the weather cooperates.

Duo Diorama and Chicago Symphony Orchestra winds

Concordia University’s chamber orchestra returns home after a spring tour of Wisconsin and Illinois with a concert Sunday, April 10 at 7 p.m. at the Chapel of Our Lord on the Concordia Campus, 7400 Augusta St. in River Forest.

The performance draws together Johann Sebastian Bach’s Ricercare a 6 in a new rendition composed by Concordia alumnus Jeremy Zimmer.

The show also includes pieces by Francis Poulenc, a percussion concerto from Darius Milhaud, Renaissance suites reimagined by Ottorino Respighi and Peter Warlock, along with a set of folk pieces from Edvard Grieg.

Concordia professor Dr. Maurice Boyer conducts the chamber orchestra, chapel choir and women’s choir. The chamber orchestra covers a wide repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary music, and regularly collaborates with the university’s choirs.

The concert will also be streamed online at cuchicago.edu/live.

Unity Chamber Music series artistic directors Winston Choi and MingHuan Xu of Duo Diorama will be joined by Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) clarinetist John Bruce Yeh and horn player Oto Carillo at this fundraiser performance at the Unity Temple, 875 Lake St. in Oak Park, on Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m.

The performance is presented by the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation and also features rising star musician Nick Reeves on cello. The program includes trios by Bartok, Brahms and Khatchaturian.

Proceeds from the event, like all performances in the concert series, benefit the foundation’s mission to preserve the temple and provide quality public programming. Ticket prices range from $10 to $30, with foundation members receiving a $5 discount.

May Rose Bill, 101 Matriarch of Beloit Avenue May Rose Bill, 101, a very longtime resident of Forest Park, died peacefully in her sleep in her first and last home on April 3, 2022.

She was married to the late Robert Bill, a native of Forest Park, for 57 years. They met at 16 and were high school sweethearts from rival schools. May is a graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School and Bob was a graduate of Proviso East. The couple enjoyed traveling and gardening together.

May retired from Marshall Field’s where she worked 20 years at the State Street store and assisted many Chicago celebrities through the years.

Her civic interests included the VFW Women’s Auxiliary as a lifetime member, the Eagles as a lifetime member, and president of the Women’s Club of Forest Park. She served on the Forest Park Public Library Board for 25 years. Her hobbies included, gourmet cooking, sewing, tennis, and she was an active participant on bowling teams at Circle Lanes.

The grand matriarch of the 600 block of Beloit

Avenue, she loved her neighbors and participated in block parties and other events.

Her neighborhood affectionately called her “the punch lady.”

She was thrilled by the parade in her honor for her 100th birthday. Over 100 people attended and marched. An antique fire engine led the parade, followed by a flag truck from the VFW. Speeches were given by John Rice, columnist for the Forest Park Review, the honorable Mayor Rory Hoskins, and her daughter, Janet Fink.

May is survived by her only child, Janet May Fink. She was Gaga to her grandchildren, Jill May Smentek and Cory Robert Fink (Angela) and her three great-grandchildren, Hannah Fink, 19; Tyler Fink, 16; and Kolton Smentek, 13.

In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to St. John Lutheran Church of Forest Park, Assisi Animal Foundation of Crystal Lake, and Cause for Paws of Bryon, Illinois.

Carolyn Nickels, 80 Former Forest Parker Carolyn S. Nickels (nee Faulkner), 80, of LaGrange Park, formerly of Forest Park and Mt. Vernon, died on March 31, 2022. An avid Bingo player, she loved watching Jeopardy and enjoyed shopping. She especially loved spending time with her family and cooking for their gatherings.

Carolyn was the wife of the late Arthur T. Nickels; the mother of Karen (Myles) Miller, Susan (Steven) Nickels-Lucente, Jennifer (Noel) Nickels-Selewa, Laura (Margarito) Nickels-Soto, John (Maggie) Nickels, and Mark (Allison) Nickels; the grandmother of Arthur (Zaza) Soto, Alex Soto, Luke Nickels, Adam Soto, Jack Nickels, Sydney Selewa, Max Selewa, Blake Nickels, and Molly Nickels; sister of the late William Faulkner and John (Rosalee) Faulkner, Glennes Walker, and James (the late Rosemary) Faulkner; sister-in-law of Donald (the late Marilyn) Nickels; and aunt of many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank special niece Kathy Sledge-Accamondo and the Loyola Hospital Nursing Staff as well as the staff at Loyola Hospice.

How one cab company fared

checks of every driver. Some people feel trepidation about riding in a car with a stranger.

They should know that cab drivers are more thoroughly vetted than ride-share drivers.

Ride-share companies grabbed a percentage of Blue Cab passengers. But that loss was nothing compared to the impact of the pandemic.

Starting with the March 2020 lockdown, employees were no longer traveling to work. Many are still working from home.

The company didn’t just lose passengers, they lost drivers. Many older drivers did not feel safe driving strangers.

The company sanitized the cabs and provided masks and gloves to the drivers, but the pandemic idled 75% of their fleet. The company has rebounded but the number of drivers is still down.

Bennett feels for the drivers, many of whom are owner-operators. He pointed out that Blue Cab passengers are supporting a person, not a faceless corporation.

Many drivers have become friends with their regular passengers. The drivers and office staff are incredibly loyal. Most have worked at Blue Cab for over 30 years.

Blue Cab Co.* has been a family enterprise, ever since two brothers founded it in 1923.

The company was first based in Oak Park and remained there for 77 years. In the 1950s, the Bennett family purchased Blue Cab and the family matriarch is president. Jim Bennett serves as general manager. The company built a new facility in Forest Park in 2000 that includes a repair center.

Bennett has guided the company through the most challenging years they have ever faced. First was fierce competition from ride-share companies. Bennett believes the ride-share companies have an unfair advantage over cab companies because taxis are more tightly regulated.

Blue Cab is licensed in every community it serves. Their hybrid cabs undergo regular inspections. Their drivers must have chauffer licenses. The Forest Park Police Department conducts background

The company is almost a century old but had to modernize to survive. For example, Blue Cab has contracted with health insurers to transport patients to their doctor’s office and hospital visits. They also deliver packages.

Their biggest innovation, though, was installing computers in the cabs, with plans to equip every cab with a tablet.

They are also constantly upgrading their software to streamline operations. Customer calls are fielded by operators in the Philippines.

We booked rides with these operators for a recent trip to San Diego. Blue Cab made getting to Midway Airport painless, for a $25 flat rate. For the return trip from O’Hare, I booked Blue Cab to pick us up.

The company tracks flights using the airline websites. Our driver called just after we landed. It was reassuring to know he was there to meet us at Arrivals. The flat rate was again $25.

This was way more reasonable than a ride-share company, or a city cab. Plus, we had that pleasant feeling of supporting an individual who drives for a hometown company. *Full disclosure, I have driven for Blue Cab and ride-share companies.

The most southern end of Forest Park is the final resting place of the trapeze artists, bareback riders, lion tamer, strongmen, clown families and dozens of others, including “Smiley,” “Baldy,” “4 Horse Driver,” and “unknown” in the Showmen’s Rest section of Woodlawn Cemetery.

The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus was making their way from Michigan City to Hammond, Indiana and stopped to manage a mechanical issue in the early morning of June 22, 1918.

An empty Pulman car, driven by a conductor who had little sleep, heavy meals and some kidney pills, had fallen asleep in the locomotive.

Passing the warning signals the passenger train struck the caboose and rear wooden sleeping cars which erupted in flames, killing an estimated 86 people.

Five days later, 53 of those killed were buried in a mass grave at Woodlawn Cemetery in the section set aside by the Showmen’s League of America months earlier. Five statues of elephants with lowered trunks watch over the burial site.

Black leaders in Proviso

n a worthy and revealing conversation, the four Black mayors in Proviso Township gathered March 26 at the village hall in Broadview to talk about their range of experiences as elected Black officials in 2022.

Mayor Rory Hoskins of Forest Park, Mayor Andre Harvey of Bellwood, Mayor Katrina Thompson of Broadview and Mayor Nathaniel George Booker of Maywood gathered under the auspices of Delta Sigma Theta sorority to discuss firsts and to open up about experiences of racism they have felt in their lives.

Hoskins is distinguished as the first elected Black person in Forest Park when he was elected village commissioner in 2007 and as the first Black mayor from his election in 2019. And as Harvey pointed out with some emphasis, Hoskins is the only mayor in this group to have been elected in a town that does not have a predominantly Black base of residents.

Hoskins talked about having been stopped by police in his hometown of Galveston, Texas when he 15. Hoskins said he was jogging and was actually in sight of his family’s home when he was stopped. Further, he noted, his dad was the first Black mayor of the Texas city.

While Hoskins traces his affinity for leading the long-time celebration of Juneteenth in Forest Park to his Galveston roots, he has been quite reticent in discussing race as a critical aspect of his service in Forest Park.

In the discussion among the four mayors, Hoskins acknowledged that being mayor has allowed him to intentionally appoint a number of Black and Brown people, and notably more women, to a range of Forest Park commissions. That is a legitimate accomplishment in a village where previous leaders did not see growing diversity as a priority.

We’d say Hoskins gets credit for not only stepping up the diversity of local commissions but also the overall quality of appointments to these commissions. In many towns, citizen commissions are effectively the bench where future leaders emerge. That has not been Forest Park’s intentional history. So this is a notable change.

Always it is interesting when Black and Brown leaders gather in a space away from their direct responsibilities and talk more openly about the satisfactions their elections bring them as well as the challenges they continue to face as leaders of color.

We are in a moment of possibility in Proviso Township even as we are in troubled times in a wider world where too many white people feel emboldened to diminish our collective historical and systemic racism.

This conversation was a worthy moment of honesty and grace.

he guys in the Saturday morning men’s group were in good mood. They had been meeting in person for a while last year but then when COVID spiked again, they had gone back to meeting on Zoom, and today was the first time they were back together at the Main Café in months.

After 15 minutes of light-hearted banter, Dominique said, “Well guys, I guess we’d better get down to what we’re here for.” He volunteered to offer the prayer.

After the chorus of amens in unison, Alice, who had been waiting to take their orders, opened the next phase of the conversation, “You guys must be smoking weed. I used to pray but gave that up a long time ago. I never got any answers.”

She took their orders, and as she walked away she looked back over her shoulder. “And what is your Jesus going to do to the Russians? Wash their feet?”

“You know,” said Asch as Alice headed toward the kitchen, “I believe in prayer, but when it comes to Ukraine, I’m not sure what to pray for.”

Eric responded, “I’m a little embarrassed to admit I’ve been praying for someone to assassinate Putin.”

“I hear you, Eric, but can you imagine Jesus carrying an assault rifle?”

“No, but I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I can’t imagine Jesus doing that, but Passover is coming up, as well as Holy Week, and isn’t that the time when our Jewish friends remember God killing all the first-born boys in Egypt, then wiping out Pharaoh’s army in the Red Sea?” Mitty took a deep breath, “Eric, it does seem like we have to choose between a God who defeats the enemy outside of us or saves us from the one tormenting us inside.

Dominique added, “Jesus said go and do likewise.

To me that means what we decide about God is what we have to conclude about ourselves and what we need to do, however small.”

As they often did when the men in the Saturday fellowship faced a conundrum, they went quiet.

“So, Pastor,” Eric said, breaking the silence.

“You’re going to pray for Ukraine tomorrow, right?

What are you going to pray for? For us to forgive the Russians and pray for peace? Or for God to free the Ukrainians by drowning Putin’s army in the Black

Sea?” Another minute of silence followed until Asch spoke up. “I think Alice would contend that Jesus was a loser.”

When he got home, Mitty immediately called his neighbor.

“Michael,” he asked, “when you’re sitting at the seder in your temple, what are you thinking?”

“What am I thinking?”

“Yeah. You know. About God. I mean, are you thinking about God as a warrior who defeats the evil oppressor?”

“Oh, I see. You mean like El Shaddai who cursed the oppressive enemy with 10 plagues and then wiped out his army?”

“Yeah. Like that,” Mitty replied.

“Passover and Holy Week happen at the same time, right? And God in the Passover story defeats evil and in the Holy Week story it seems like evil defeats God … at least this side of heaven.”

Michael gathered his thoughts. “Well, in our temple Rabbi Levine tends to interpret the Passover story in psychological and spiritual terms. You know, God is about setting us free from our own inner bondage. Like alcoholism or prejudice.”

“OK. But in Israel aren’t there a lot of hard-core orthodox folks who interpret Passover as a story about defeating their earthly enemies? Like Hamas and Iran and everyone who wants Allah to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth. Like those enemies are the modern day pharaohs?”

Michael sighed, “Sure and we have a few people at temple who want Biden to send troops to Ukraine, Putin and his nuclear weapons be damned. Literally.”

“But seriously, Michael. If evil is real, and if Putin is evil, what do I tell my people on Good Friday after we read the story about a God who dies on a cross?”

“I know, Walt. And the victory is postponed till the final judgment. But when I think about it, Rabbi Levine just can’t bring himself to talk about God as warrior. It’s like we liberals can’t tolerate thinking about a God who would kill all the first-born in Egypt, so we have to interpret that story as an internal liberation.”

Mitty’s imagination pictured Union troops going into battle in the Civil War singing, “Glory, glory Hallelujah. His truth is marching on.”

He tried to imagine himself marching with them.
