The 2023 Forest Park municipal election is shaping up to be competitive, with two mayoral candidates so far and only two out of the four village commissioners fully committed to running for reelection.

Incumbent mayor Rory Hoskins previously confirmed that he’s running for election. He has at least one challenger. John Doss, former Forest Park Director of Public Works and current Park District of Forest Park commissioner, has long been rumored to be interested in the position. He confirmed last week to the Review that he is running.

Chris Harris, a previous mayoral candidate, confirmed in an email to the Review Monday that while he remains active in the village he has no plans to run for mayor in 2023.

On the village council front, commissioners Ryan Nero and Maria Maxham confirmed that they were running. Commissioner Jessica Voogd said she hasn’t made the decision yet, and commissioner Joe Byrnes said that he is leaning toward retiring. With the candidate filing deadlines still months away, other candidates could potentially join both races.

Report outlines District 91 policies for helping vulnerable, struggling students Annual report tied to federal grant funding

How Forest Park’s public schools focus resources on its most vulnerable students is reflected in many ways. One is the annual Consolidated District Plan for Federal Grants which gives a glimpse of what District 91 does to support students facing various challenges.

The plan is a report the district must submit annually in order to receive most of its federal grant funding. While it touches briefly on special education students, it largely focuses on students who are English-language learners (ELL), low-income students, minority students and students experiencing homelessness. It also touches on what the district is doing to help students who are struggling academically to improve and what the district is doing to reduce bullying. The most recent plan was approved during the District 91 Board of Education’s May 12 meeting.

According to the Illinois State Board of Education report card data, as of 2021, 47.1% of all District 91 students were lowincome. Just 5.5% of the students were English Language learners and 2.1% of all students were homeless. The district is majority-minority – 45.6% of the students are Black, 14.5% of the students are Hispanic and 8.6% of the students are listed as being in two or more racial/ethnic groups. White students make up 27% of the student body.

Looking nationwide, students who are low-income and minority are statistically more likely to get fewer resources than other students, so one of the things District 91 was required to do was report what they are doing to address any disparities it may have. District 91 looks at student achievement data, enrollment data and human resources information every year.

“After the analysis of August/September enrollment data and fall benchmark achievement data, the district determines how human resources must be deployed in order to ensure [that] the needs of students are met,” the plan states. “This process occurs after the winter and spring bench-

mark periods as well.”

For ELL students, District 91 teachers develop plans for what students can learn based on their knowledge of the language, their academic strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests. EEL students may also work in groups.

For school district statistical purposes, homeless students are students who don’t have a residence to call their own, so this includes students who don’t have any housing at all and students who are temporarily staying at someone else’s home. All school districts are required to provide transportation, no matter where the students happen to stay, and residency requirements are waived until the family finds permanent housing. The student also may qualify for free or reduced lunches, depending on their parents income. The plan mentions that the district has a dedicated fund to help pay for school supplies.

The plan also deals with the ways District 91 supports students who are struggling academically. Students in pre-school programs get screened. If the screening

catches potential “academic risk,” the district organized meetings involving parents, teachers, administrators and the reading specialist.

“Transitional meetings are held to discuss individual student needs and to put a plan in place to support at-risk students,” the document stated, adding that the goal of the plan is to create “a smooth and successful transition for the students.”

As the students go through the school system, the district continues to keep an eye on them to see if they might be at the risk of failing their classes, screening them three times a year. The staff and parents develop a “specific intervention plan” to “address the areas in need of further instruction” based on the students’ academic and behavioral needs.

If the intervention isn’t working, “teachers can adjust the intensity or type of intervention the student is receiving.” Depending on students’ needs, it may include pulling students out of regular class for 3 to 5 days a week to work with reading specialists.

The district was also required to explain how it’s reducing bullying and harassment.

The plan reports the district has been moving away from removing students from the classroom and other “traditional punitive disciplinary actions” in favor of working to “understand and rectify conditions that foster bullying, intimidation, and harassment.”

While the plan doesn’t elaborate on it, the school bullying prevention policy specifies that they take a restorative justice approach, where both the victim and the perpetrator get access to counseling and social services to repair the harm and address any issues that may be affecting them.

Among other things, the perpetrator may be taught better social-emotional skills.

The plan states that “District 91 believes in the importance of teaching students about social emotional awareness,” so “prevention and character instruction are included at all grade levels.”

Hoskins wins endorsements, raises funds during kick-off Danny Davis, Hoskins swap strong endorsements

Elected officials, political candidates, business owners and local residents filled Shanahan’s bar, 7353 Madison St., on the late afternoon of May 25 as incumbent mayor Rory Hoskins kicked off his re-election campaign.

Hoskins has touted economic development that look place under his watch, the progress he made on developing the village-owned portion of the Altenheim site, and his efforts to build relationships with Forest Park School District 91 and the neighboring villages. He said that, if re-elected, his major priorities would be to continue in the same vein, as well as to work with Oak Park and River Forest to improve the Harlem Avenue underpass under the CTA/Metra viaduct. Cong. Danny Davis (7th), River Forest Village President Catherine Adduci and other elected officials praised Hoskins as a dedicated public servant who would bring even more economic development to Forest Park.

In his speech to supporters, Hoskins said he thought Forest Park was “wellpositioned” to get significant federal infrastructure funding. His major priority would be improving road access to the Altenheim site, as well as working together

with River Forest and Oak Park to “unclog the Harlem/Lake viaduct” -- that is, widen it and improve the traffic flow.

“I’m sure most of you have been stuck there, on a Tuesday or a Saturday,” he remarked.

Aside from the challenge of making changes to a spot where the three villages borders converged, there is the fact that the Union Pacific Railroad controls the overpass that includes freight traffic, the CTA el and Metra trains.

Hoskins touted the C4 collaborative, where Broadview, Forest Park, Oak Park, River Forest and potentially other west suburban villages will pool together their resources to become more environmentally sustainable. He said that, if elected, he would pursue other collaborations.

“That’s part of the COVID effect.,” Hoskins said. “COVID has taught us that we really need to work together. “ For example, he said that Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest could team up on marketing, which he believed would benefit them all.

“What I’ve learned over the last three years is that some of the developers that are busy in Oak Park are also looking at Forest Park,” Hoskins said. “So, if we can market our area jointly, right, it adds value

The incumbent mayor got plenty of support from elected officials. Adduci posed for pictures with Hoskins, and told the Review she supports him “wholeheartedly,” saying that she appreciated the economic development he brought to Forest Park and his efforts to improve collaboration between their villages.

“He’s been a great mayor of Forest Park,” she said. “I’m all for him, I’m 100% behind him, and I’m certain he’ll win the election.”

Kyra Tyler, president of the Forest Park School District 91 school board, said she appreciated Hoskins’ stewardship during the time of crisis.

“I’m supporting Rory because I think he’s doing a great job of managing our village during the pandemic, and advancing us forward,” she said. “I’d like to see where he’ll take us in the next four years.”

Mariyana Spyropoulos, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District commissioner who is also running for re-election, said

she supported Hoskins because she believed that he has been a strong advocate for his constituents.

But by far the biggest endorsement came from Davis, who arrived toward the tail end of the event.

“I think, no matter what anybody else thinks, no matter what anybody else might believe, no matter what anybody else might do, I think that you got yourself a fine public servant,” he said.

Davis noted that Hoskins made Juneteeth, the holiday that marked the end of slavery in United States, a village holiday, before it became a federal holiday “To me, it just means that Rory was ahead of his time,” he said.

Hoskins replied that he fully supports Davis for re-election. Davis is facing two opponents in the June Democratic primary – Austin community activist Kina Collins, who also ran against him in 2020, and Denarvis Mendenhall – but he has no Republican opponents in the general election.

election kick-off party at Shanahan’s restaurant, 7353 Madison St. on May 25. As previously reported by the Review, as of April 1, his campaign fund had $756 on hand.

Doss worked for the Department of Public Works between 1985 and 2021, not counting the years he worked part-time in high school, becoming the department director in 2008. He has also served as an elected park commissioner since 2007.

As a mayor-elect, Hoskins sited Doss’ decision to hire his own son, John Ryan Doss, as an example of the kind of nepotism he wanted to address in village government. Doss first hired his son as summer help before promoting him to full-time work. At the time, Doss said that his son approached him, and that offering positions to seasonal employees first made sense, since they were already familiar with the department.

“I think corrupt is sort of a crazy word to be used for helping out my son,” Doss told the Review at the time.

Several candidates running for seats on the Circuit Court of Cook County used the gathering as an opportunity to get the word out about their own campaigns.

While judges who are elected usually get retained without much trouble, the races for vacant seats tend to fly under the radar, so candidates often struggle to get noticed in the crowded field.

Diana Lopez, who currently serves as an associate judge at the Circuit Court of Cook County traffic court division, is running for one of the at-large circuit court judge seats. She described Hoskins as “a wonderful supporter of mine.”

The event also attracted some residents.

Anita Taylor, who moved to Forest Park from Oak Park three years ago, said she’s been impressed with how Madison Street businesses rebounded from the pandemic.

She liked the fact that property values have been increasing as property taxes remained lower than Oak Park’s, and she was also happy to see a Chipotle location go up at the northwest corner of Madison Street and Harlem Avenue.

“We did pretty well,” she said. “I’m really hopeful [Hoskins] will win.”

15th Street sewer project gets council’s final approval Engineering contract unanimously approved

Forest Park’s village council voted unanimously May 23 to award Christopher Burke Engineering the $26,110 engineering services contract for the 15th street sewer separation project.

This was the last contract the village had to approve before the project could get underway. When completed, the section of 15th Street between Marengo and Circle avenues will have two separate sets of sewers for stormwater and water that goes into faucets, which is expected to reduce flooding. The village is currently applying for federal funding to build another section, between Marengo and Elgin avenues, but that project isn’t expected to start until at least next year.

Christopher Burke has been a long-time engineering consultant for Forest Park on a number of projects. In this particular case, it will review construction schedules and plans, track the construction’s process

and maintain the lines of communications between the contractor, its subcontractor and the village, make sure all the materials comply with state law, and inspect the new sewers once they’re done.

During its May 9 meeting, the village council approved the $392,450 contract with Downers Grove based Uno Construction to do the actual construction. The project received $360,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding through a Cook County grant, with the village planning to use up to $40,000 from its capital fund as a local match.

The Marengo to Elgin project is projected to cost $450,000. Forest Park is applying for the CDBG funds to cover $375,000 of the total, with the village’s VIP fund covering the remaining $75.000.

The village council approved the Burke contract unanimously and without discussion.

According to the bid documents, the project is expected to take 35 days.

Thieves steal catalytic converter from car at Walmart

A pair of thieves allegedly stole a catalytic converter not just in broad daylight, but in the middle of the Forest Park Walmart parking lot, 1300 Des Plaines Ave. On May 24, at 3:17 p.m., the store security officer was alerted of the possible theft in progress in the Walmart parking lot Row 5-6. When she got out onto the parking lot, she saw two male suspects climb into a gray 2011 Hyundai Sonata and drive north through the lot. The security guard noticed that a black 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander parked in the middle of Row 5 had a hydraulic jack placed underneath its front driver’s side. A witness reportedly saw the two suspects cutting the converter out of the vehicle. The witness used a phone to film the alleged suspects getting into the car, and the incident was caught on the security camera. Both videos were turned over to the police.

The suspects were still at large at the time of the report.

Vehicle stolen, abandoned A resident’s car was stolen from a liquor store parking lot – only to turn up abandoned several blocks east.

On May 25, at 9:35 p.m., the victim left his car running as he went inside the Cardinal Wine and Spirits liquor store, 7533 Roosevelt Rd. The victim had his key fob in his pocket. While he was inside the store, someone reportedly drove off with his car, a gray 2014 Chrysler. The victim subsequently told the officers that he had his handgun locked in the vehicle trunk.

The officer reported the vehicle stolen.

Less than an hour later, at around 10:26 p.m., an Oak Park police officer found the missing Chrysler abandoned in one of Harlem Avenue’s northbound lanes, near the Harlem/Harvard intersection. The subsequent search revealed no new damage, and the gun was still in the trunk.

The store had a camera pointed at the parking lot, but it wasn’t clear whether it

captured the alleged theft. The police currently have no suspects.

Bike stolen from garage A burglar took a bike from a garage while leaving two other bikes stored in the garage where they were.

On May 26, at around 8 a.m., the victim and her husband left their home at the 1000 block of Elgin Avenue. When they came back around an hour and a half later, the victim discovered that their garage door was open. While she didn’t think much of it at first, since she accidentally left their garage door open in the past, she soon realized that one of the bikes stored inside, a dark blue Reid MTB sports bike valued at around $600, was taken from the garage.

Two other bikes were still inside.

There was no sign of forced entry, so it wasn’t clear whether the burglar broke in or took advantage of the victim accidentally leaving the door unlocked. There were two security cameras positioned at a nearby building that might have captured the incident, but police officers were unable to get in touch with the owners.

Packages recovered Three boxes left at the park bench at the southwest corner of Circle Avenue and Harvard Street turned out to be an undelivered Amazon package and two shoe boxes with shoes still inside.

That intersection has benches on every corner. On May 24, at around 8:09 a.m., a resident living at the 1000 block of Circle Avenue, near the southwest corner bench, spotted the boxes. He consulted the crossing guard, who responded that she’s seen the boxes for the past two days and she assumed they were trash. The resident then reached out to the police.

The Amazon package contained four pairs of size 36 Cocofleur Mens shorts and four XL-size polo shirts. Each shoe box had size 11.5 Cole Haan shoes.

None of the packages had address labels.

All of the recovered items are currently stored at the police station.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, March 28-30, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Vintage car show coming to history museum Beautifully restored antique automobiles, for free, June 11

“People often reminisce about their first car, their old family car and about what car they always wanted as a teenager or even as an adult.”

For the first time ever, the Oak Park Vintage Car Club and the Oak Park River Forest Museum are teaming up to put on a free vintage car show. Everyone is invited June 11 to step into the past, visiting a time when the Ford Model T and other historic automobiles ruled the highways.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, fully operational and beautifully restored vintage vehicles will line the streets outside the museum at Lake Street and Lombard, allowing attendees to marvel at the incredible feats of machinery. All the featured cars belong to Oak Parkers. The owners will be on hand at the outdoor show to answer questions and share special stories about their vehicles.

Fenwick closes on purchase of Priory Campus Fenwick, Dominican presidents look ahead to future partnership

Fenwick High School closed on the purchase of Priory Campus, a roughly sevenacre parcel owned by Dominican University in River Forest, earlier this month, according to a press release issued by high school officials. The closing between the two Catholic institutions took place May 19, nearly five months after university officials selected Fenwick as the buyer.

In a news release, Fenwick president Rev. Richard Peddicord called the partnership with the university a “historic milestone.” And while the high school has yet to firm up its plans for the site, Peddicord said that the “acquisition of this building and land will bode well for the future of Fenwick as the Friars approach our centennial in 2029.”

Last December, Fenwick entered into a sale agreement with Dominican to purchase the Priory, a 7.6-acre property located at 7200 Division St. in River Forest, for $7.5 million.

Fenwick had beaten out Oak Park and River Forest High School and other area entities

eying the land.

Representatives from the schools look to meet May 31 to discuss the details of the Priory’s use. Peddicord once told Wednesday Journal that officials sought to use the Priory building as additional space for administrative or athletic offices, spiritual retreats or arts and music programs.

The high school also expects to close on the purchase of the athletic fields surrounding the newly acquired property in the spring of 2023, the release also stated.

Fenwick had long leased those fields, which equate to about 11 acres of land, from the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great.

If Fenwick were to acquire the fields, it would own 18 acres at Harlem and Division.

Dominican President Glena Temple stated in the release that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two schools lists their collaborative efforts.

Those initiatives will center on academics, athletics, mission and ministry, along with marketing communications and admission, she said.

“We look forward to working with Fenwick in promoting Dominican education,” Temple said in the news release.

“This sale is important for the future of the university, and it will allow the priory, which initially belonged to the Dominican Friars, to transfer to another Dominican institution.”

Climbing Mount Etna one wine at a time Anfora Wine Merchants, Carnivore partner on dinner featuring Frank Cornelissen wines

Pay attention, wine geeks — Anfora Wine Merchants, 128 S. Marion St., has partnered with Chef Brad Knaub of Carnivore to curate a one-night-only, Sicilianinspired meal driven by the high-quality wines crafted by visionary winemaker, Frank Cornelissen. The June 4 event boasts a four-course dinner and a tasting of seven wines from the superior cluster of Cornelissen vineyards nestled in the northern valley of Mount Etna.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Etna is an active volcano. Mineral rich volcanic soil is at the heart of Frank Cornelissen wine. The Belgian wine

producer established his estate in 2001 when little was known about “Etna wines,” but now the region is among the most exciting in the wine world today. Many of Frank Cornelissen grapes are grown on original root stalk. The century old vines are naturally resistant to grape plylloxora, the insect that nearly destroyed wine production across Europe, but more importantly Cornelissen was attracted to the rich volcanic soils that nurture Etna’s Nerello Mascalese grapes.

“There is added minerality in the soil at Mount Etna; smoke and ash from the volcano even impact the rains in the area,” said Adrian Weisell, owner of Anfora Wine Merchants. “This complex macro climate contributes to the uniqueness of the wines produced in the region.”

Weisell considers Cornelissen to be a “leading light” in the natural wine movement. Harkening back to pre-industrial wine making methods, natural wine producers embrace organic viticulture and use ambient yeast to ferment their wines.

The Anfora-Carnivore dinner will focus primarily on the elegant and nuanced red wines made from grapes grown on the coveted northern slope of Mount Etna.

“I don’t know much about wine except that I like it,” said Chef Knaub of Carnivore, 1042 Pleasant St. “But I am digging that Frank Cornelissen wines have an almost cultlike following.”

Partnership between Anfora and Carnivore is not a new concept, but this is the first-time wines have driven the menu. Typically, Chef Knaub determines the menu and Weisell selects an array of wines to complement the planned meal. The forthcoming Frank Cornelissen Wine Dinner, however, represents the first time the businesses have reversed their approach.

“Finding wines to match food is typically easier, but this dinner is different because of the quality of the wines,” said Knaub.

“I am taking inspiration from Sicilian classics and elbowing them out to make the pairings work.”

Diners can expect a trio of savory castelles to kick off the meal. An interpretation of a traditional Sicilian street food, Chef Knaub anticipates filling the pastry packages with fava beans, greens and fennel. Other menu highlights include pasta tossed with Capuliato, a traditional Sicilian condiment based on dried tomatoes, garnished with uni roe and pistachio and lake trout served over couscous with golden raisins, herbs and ramp butter. A cheese course and cookies from neighboring Blackout Baking Company will round out the meal. Each course is designed not to overpower the wines chosen to highlight the “enviable terroir” of the Mount Etna region generally and the Frank Cornelissen Estate specifically.

Then there were two

T

he Review reports today that John Doss, current park commissioner and longtime and village public works chief, now retired, will soon enter the 2023 race for Forest Park mayor.

That will pit him against Rory Hoskins, the incumbent mayor who announced a week ago that he is running for reelection.

The Doss family has a long history in Forest Park. Multiple generations have served the village, or depending on your take on that, have benefitted from the village’s insular hiring history.

When Hoskins ran for mayor in 2019 he was strong in arguing that hiring in the village needed to be opened up to more candidates and candidates without direct links to the village. He used the Doss family as an example of such hiring.

So going in we know of at least one issue that will rightly be debated.

With the election still 10 months out, we may see other candidates for mayor emerge, though the Review confirmed over the holiday weekend that Chris Harris, twice a mayoral candidate, will not compete for mayor in 2023.

We’ve also confirmed that two of the four sitting commissioners will run, one is undecided, and the fourth, the veteran Joe Byrnes is leaning heavily toward retirement after decades of public service.

Ryan Nero, elected in 2019, will run for a second term. Maria Maxham, former editor of the Review who was appointed to a commissioner’s seat a year ago, says she will run for election to the council in 2023. And Jessica Voogd, also elected in 2019, says she has not yet decided her plans.

We hope there will be multiple additional candidates for commissioner. Forest Park benefits when elections are contested. The town has genuine issues and challenges. Hearing more points of view is only helpful.

We do hope candidates in the coming election will consciously steer clear of the anonymous muck that has too often characterized, especially, the final weeks of election season. We want to see sincere pledges that neither candidates nor their closely or loosely aligned surrogates will splatter our local election with venom and untruths.

A better corner

Chipotle is open at Harlem and Madison.

And we’ll call that a notable upgrade from a decade as a vacant lot with a near miss on a Starbucks and occasional use as spillover parking for Rush Oak Park Hospital.

This northwest corner is clearly a gateway to Forest Park and the new signage identifying the village is a plus. We have concerns over the impact of traffic so near to an already congested intersection. And we’re not sure we fully grasp the Chipotlane concept.

Smaller footprint. No indoor dining. Order your food in advance on the app. But what about folks who get a burrito craving only when they see the sign?

In any case this will be a solid property- and sales-tax producer, brings another major brand to town, and is a vast improvement over nothing.

Overloaded with sadness

think there’s something wrong with me,” Pastor Walter Mitty said to his friend and neighbor, Michael Rosenthal, as they walked to Zaphne’s Retro coffee shop last Thursday.

“Something wrong?”

“Yeah. It’s about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday.”

He paused, trying to find the right words.

“What’s bothering me, Michael, is that when I heard about it, I didn’t react emotionally. See, I found out about the shooting when my sister-in-law called from Manitowoc. She was crying and between her sobs she told me what had happened. She didn’t think something like that could happen in Manitowoc, but now …”

“And you didn’t feel anything?”

“I kind of got into my pastor mode. You know I’m the calm, stable adult in the room while everyone else is falling apart emotionally.”

The conversation went on hold as the two men walked into Retro and greeted Zaphne with big smiles.

“It’s good to see you two after so many months,” she exclaimed, hugging both of them.

Being hugged by an attractive young woman made Mitty temporarily forget what was on his mind.

“Good to see you, too,” Michael responded. “How have you been?”

“Well, the business survived COVID,” she replied, adding, “just barely, but what’s really got me down is the war in Ukraine and the shooting in Buffalo last week and the one in Texas. I mean, all those little children!”

Zaphne turned away from them to hide the tears in her eyes while Mitty stared at the floor. Knowing what his friend was feeling, Michael put his hand on his neighbor’s shoulder.

After handing cappuccinos to her only two customers, Zaphne retreated behind the counter and focused on her cellphone screen.

After savoring that first sip of his coffee, Pastor Walt said, “You know, Michael, a lot of the talk on the news has been about mental illness.”

“You mean like background checks and red flag laws?”

“Yeah, but it just occurred to me that you have to be mentally ill to buy an assault rifle.”

“Because …?”

“Well, because assault rifles are designed to kill people. Not deer, not turkeys. Assault rifles are made to kill people. Who in their right mind would want to kill

people?”

Michael sipped the foam from his coffee and said, “Well, I bumped into Sgt. Grossman at the park yesterday and we got talking about guns. I guess it’s on everyone’s mind. And he said that the police have target practice every month, and the picture on the target isn’t a deer.”

Pastor Mitty opened his mouth as if he was about to say something, thought better of it, then replied, “Yeah, I think I see your point. I’m all for sending weapons a lot more lethal than assault rifles to Ukraine.”

Michael nodded and added, “Aren’t we saying that civilians should not be allowed to have assault rifles? Not ever?”

Mitty drained his coffee and said, “You know, Michael, I was talking to Sarge at the Military and Police store the other day, and he supports the NRA because citizens, he argues, have the right to defend themselves.”

Michael raised his eyebrows, held up two fingers for Zaphne to bring two more coffees and asked, “Defend themselves against whom?”

The second cappuccinos tasted as good as the first.

Both friends rolled their eyes. “The government, I guess,” Mitty replied “What world is Sarge living in?” Michael asked and pointed at the Retro’s owner. “You see Zaphne, Walt?

She looks like she, too, is in a different world. She and her phone. We’re the only ones here right now and she could be hanging out with us.”

Later that day, after making a sandwich with Natural Ovens whole wheat bread, CherMake summer sausage, and sharp cheddar cheese, Pastor Walt sat down and turned on the evening news.

“In the wake of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas,” the host began, “our reporters did some research on gun violence and somewhat to our surprise we learned that mass shootings accounted for less than two percent of gun deaths last year, that the majority of gun deaths in 2021 were suicides, and that most of the rest happened on our streets or in our homes.”

Then the news switched to Ukraine and the report that maybe 10,000 Russian and 3,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed. “By assault rifles,” thought Mitty grimly.

Afterward, he thought of Zaphne who seemed so alone.

“Maybe,” thought Pastor Walt, “I’m not insensitive, but just numb. Just overloaded by all of the pain.”

And he followed that thought up with another: “Thanks, Lord, for Michael and two cups of cappuccino.”

Laughs for a great cause

ou know what we need right now? A good laugh. We’re bombarded daily by disturbing news, while enduring dreary weather.

That’s why Forest Park’s Brandon Prosek and Monica Berns are reviving their Faux Pas Comedy Shows. The first will be Wednesday, June 8, at Lathrop House Café, 26 Lathrop Ave., in their new backyard bar area.

Seating is at 6:30 and the show runs from 7-8 p.m.

Brandon and Monica are only booking professional comedians for Faux Pas and the June 8 show is no exception. The headliner is Tyler Fowler, who performs at Zanies and is releasing a TV comedy special in 2022. Katie Meiners, another Zanies veteran, is also on the bill and the show will be hosted by comic Sharup Karim. Tickets are $10 online at Eventbrite and $15 at the door. Best of all, the show will be a fundraiser for the Forest Park Theatre, which produced Shakespeare in the Park last year and will do so again this summer.

This is the second go-round for Faux Pas, a play on FoPa. Prior to the pandemic, the pair put on comedy shows at Doc Ryan’s and drew crowds of 50-75. Their goal is to

bring high-quality comedy to town. Fortunately, the Chicago area is crawling with comic talent.

Attending comedy shows first brought Brandon and Monica together. They were drawn to little-known comedians who were still hungry for success.

They also attended open mic nights, where the performances could be disappointing. Even when the comedian wasn’t funny, they admired their courage for trying. Monica overcame her own stage fright to perform a successful set at an open mic.

Brandon also does stand-up. He writes “clean” humor, which can be more challenging in getting laughs. (Fowler also does exclusively clean material.) Brandon is a writer of comic books and a playwright.

For an accountant who works from home, he has an impressive array of creative outlets.

Monica also works from home and pursues creative endeavors, like producing a reality TV show in 2015. She is a member of the Forest Park Arts Alliance and wants to bring more performance art to town.

There’s no substitute for attending live performances. There is a sense of distance, watching comics on TV, that make them

less funny.

Plus, “We need a break from everything!”

Brandon declared. After a long, dark winter of staying indoors and staring at screens, he wants to provide an escape for live audiences. He also wants them to be safe. That is why the outdoor bar area at Lathrop House is ideal for their shows.

Following the June 8 show, they will be hosting Faux Pas Comedy Shows on July 13 and Aug. 10 at Lathrop House. They see these shows as a win-win for the community, because the proceeds support local theater. Lathrop House is also donating a percentage of their food/drink sales to benefit Forest Park Theatre.

I can attest that seeing live comedians is far superior to watching their TV specials. My son Mark and I watched a special featuring Mike Birbiglia and didn’t crack a smile. Then we attended his show at Steppenwolf Theater. He was not only hilarious but touched on darker themes. I was emotionally spent and laughing at the same time.

I grew up wearing out comedy albums.

My high school, St. Ignatius, produced Bob Newhart and John Mulaney. They were planning to team up with George Wendt for a show benefitting the school but the pandemic canceled it.

So the Faux Pas shows are carrying on a wonderful tradition. Laughs for a great cause.

No ‘Glitter Gulch’ for Mayor Witt Citizen Kane’s, located at the corner of Lathrop Avenue and Madison Street, had a long history of taverns before it was demolished in 1979 to make way for the village parking space it is today: Big Sixes, The Spot, Mickey’s Lounge, Bartholomew’s, and finally Citizen Kane’s over the years.

In September of 1968, the Forest Park Village Council was “enlivened with a discussion” to grant a permit at Bartholomew’s for 1.

Dance band and dancing certain nights; 2. Old-time movies to be shown on the wall certain nights and 3. Dixieland band once a week.

After much discussion, appre-

hension and fear of setting a precedent, the council passed the motion to allow dancing, subject to approval by the fire chief. In just under a year, by August 1969, the entertainment license was revoked after a series of complaints about “noise and carousing on the streets in the vicinity until the wee hours of the night.”

When the license was revoked, Mayor Witt, stated that he “would not tolerate any honky-tonks that attracted undesirable characters,” adding that Madison Street would not become a “Glitter Gulch” as long as he was mayor.
