Illinois ‘welcoming bill’ goes to governor Rep. Chris Welch was chief sponsor of bill in the House
By DEBORAH KADIN Contributing Reporter
Senate Bill 31, known as the Trust Act, has passed the General Assembly and is heading to the governor’s desk.
If the bill becomes law, municipalities in Illinois would be prohibited from using local resources to enforce civil immigration laws, making Illinois one of the first states in the union to declare itself safe and “welcoming” to immigrants. Under SB 31, county and state police also will be barred
from searching, arresting, or detaining a person based solely on a person’s citizenship or immigration status. The only way local law enforcement can do that is if they have See WELCOMING BILL on page 9

amadou Diomande is a resident of Forest Park who has a unique perspective on the current national immigration conversation being discussed everywhere from Forest Park to Springfield to Washington D.C. and everywhere in between, it seems. Born in 1984 in the Ivory Coast of western Africa, he grew up under the leadership of Felix HouphouetBoigny, who was the first president of that country, holding that office from 1960 to 1993. “He was a smart guy,” said Mamadou, “because he allowed immigrants from all over Africa to enter the country and contribute their skills and knowledge. The economy was booming.” But after Houphouet-Boigny died, the country descended into a violent turmoil, which began in 1998 and lasted until five or six years ago. See IMMIGRANTS on page 4

Emission tests are driving me nuts
ast week, I complained about the high cost and aggravation of driving but I didn’t mention the scourge of vehicle emission testing. Lately, I spend my days in testing lanes, vainly trying to pass the test, so that I can renew my license plate sticker. I’ve had the car serviced. The check engine light is off and no codes are popping up. I still can’t pass. Like many of you, I’m just trying to keep my car going, now that it is paid off. I’m hoping for a few more years of use, without major repairs. My car is so decrepit, the company that manufactured it, Pontiac, is no longer in business. Shortly after I bought it, the check engine light went on and remained as steady as an eternal flame. Even though it ran well and wasn’t spewing black smoke, I scrambled to pass the emission test every year. Only 17 states require emissions testing, thanks to the Clean Air Act of 1977. Illinois only requires testing in the Chicago area and suburbs of St. Louis. So, it’s just our luck we have to spend our time at testing stations. I used to go to the friendly, neighborhood
spot, on Forest Preserve Drive, now permanently closed. The next closest one was in Skokie. I was confident I would pass but some minor thing popped up. I guess my evaporative system and my EGR flow were not ready. It’s usually something minor and maddening, like the gas cap not being twisted tight enough. My mechanic encouraged me to keep testing. Next, I failed in Addison, where large numbers of cars were idling in the testing lanes, spewing emissions into the atmosphere. I couldn’t pass in time and had to buy a seven-day permit. The whole thing makes me mad. I thought we elected Donald Trump president to do away with all of these namby-pamby environmental protections. I thought we did away with the Clean Air Act and restrictions on water pollution. Wasn’t he going to gut the EPA and stop their jobkilling enforcement of stupid tree-hugger regulations? The Illinois EPA was certainly killing my job. I was stuck in testing lanes, instead of out earning money. I don’t get it. I thought we were converting to coalfueled cars, yet these bureaucrats, all they

care about is my EGR flow. I understand the testing stations provide jobs but think about the older white males, without college educations, who must waste their time in long lines. When President Trump withdrew the US from the Paris climate change accord, I thought I was home free. Didn’t a memo go out: Stop testing that old Pontiac, we could care less what it’s doing to the environment? I don’t want to sound selfish but if it takes melting the polar ice caps and flooding coastlines so that my car can pass the emissions test, I’m willing to make that deal. Besides all of this environmental nonsense killing my bottom line, I thought of Illinois’ bottom line. Didn’t the state desperately need my hundred dollar license renewal fee to keep the lights on in Springfield? Now that the state’s credit rating is lower than a tattoo parlor in a strip mall, you’d think they’d be anxious to take my money. I don’t know how this nightmare will end. President Trump is doing all he can to put America first and make our country great again. Why can’t he help a small business owner like me escape the clutches of bureaucrats? If only I could speak Russian. ■ John Rice is a columnist/private detec-

Council puts minimum wage on the agenda Vote to opt out of County hike is scheduled for June 12 By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter
The Forest Park Village Council could vote to opt out of the recently passed Cook County minimum wage hike at its upcoming June 12 county meeting, ac according to Village Administrator Tim Gillian. The ordinance, adopted in October 2016 and effective July 1, 2017, increases the minimum hourly wage to $10, a $1.75 bump from the current $8.25 per hour rate. The ordinance also requires a $1.00 raise for the next three years. By sum summer 2020, then, the Cook County minimum wage will be $13 per hour. If the council opts out of the or ordinance, Forest Park will join a growing list of com-
munities choosing to forgo the pay raise, including neighboring Riverside, River Forest, Bellwood and Maywood. According to the Illinois Constitution, if a Cook County and local municipal ordinance conflict, the municipal law wins out. Gillian said the village has received several letters advocating for an opt-out from some of the village’s big employers, including Farmington Foods, Ferrara Pan Candy Company and McAdam Landscaping. The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce also submitted a letter of support for opting-out, Gillian said. A call to the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce was not returned by press time. Farmington Foods CFO and co-owner Albert La Valle did not return a request for comment by press time. A call for comment to McAdam Landscaping was not returned by press time. An emailed request for comment to Ferrara Candy Company was also not returned by press time.

It’s kind of like a homecoming.” Radana seems to have had the easiest time adapting to American culture. “I find that American culture is not that much different than where I come from,” she said. “It wasn’t difficult for me to assimilate. We have the same western values. This is a great country. Being a citizen here is a privilege and people should not take it for granted.”
A welcoming village? The Medinas are truly a bi-cultural couple. Claudia was born here but has lived in Colombia. Rosalio is from Nicaragua. Both worked hard in the latest election for the Proviso Together candidates. As Latinos, they feel the impact of President Trump’s rhetoric perhaps more than immigrants from other countries. Claudia said people from south of the border are a diverse group, so it’s wrong to lump them all together c u l t u r a l l y, but “the only real generalization right now is that there is fear.” “The struggle has become one of documentation,” she noted. “Latinos have become all balled into Photo courtesy Naoto Hasegawa one term. And Latino/Mexican/criminal/drug dealer/rapist/illegal/immigrant are words being used interchangeably to describe all of us who speak Spanish or Portuguese. We are experiencing discrimination and questioning of our integrity by the way we look or speak, regardless of the level of education we may have obtained or our documented status.” The cause of fear among Latinos seems to be the tactics used by ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) rather the immigrations laws themselves. “Since Donald Trump became president,” she explained, “immigration policies have been undertaken with little regard for human rights. Latinos fear their civil rights will not be upheld. “Raids happen without search warrants. At a grocery store where there was a raid just a few weeks ago, 33 people were taken. People went to buy milk and pick up a few things, but they never came home. If you are caught in a raid, you are scooped up and your family just does not hear from you for an undetermined amount of time. Your children come home from school but you’re not there. The consequences are devastating for everyone who is left behind.” Naoto said that he was once called a “gook.” Another time he was told to go back home and recently a negative com-

Virginia. He does sometimes feel like an outsider here in Forest Park. “It doesn’t mean that I’m not welcome here,” he explained. “It’s not hostile. It’s more like Cheers where I’m the guy who walks in for a beer and Sam and Norm and Frazier ask me where I’m from and are nice to me, but in the end I’m not part of the group. I’m just the guy who happened to walk in for a cold one.” That’s one reason he joined the Forest Park Diversity Commission, to become more involved in the community and to share his perspective.
Visas, Green Cards and naturalization Everyone interviewed agreed that the process of getting a visa to enter the U.S. for purposes other than coming as a tourist can be lengthy, time-consuming and rigorous, causing all of them to wonder why such a big deal is being made about tightening up the immigration process when it is already quite stringent. “I was amazed at how rigorous the process was over the course of a year,” Anthony said. “I ended up hiring two different attorneys and spending $5,000. We had to provide reams of evidence that we were legitimately wanting to get married because some women will pay a U.S. citizen to marry them in order to get into the country and once they are here, they will get a quick divorce.” “Once your fiancée arrives, you have 90 days to get married. Once married, the immigrating bride can get a more permanent married visa, but that has to be renewed a year or two later. Pim was able to do that and now has a Green Card. Naoto had a fairly easy time going through a sequence of visas from student status to work
On their minds Naoto: “There are a lot of divisive remarks coming from politicians that don’t help much. To me if you have a conversation on a person-to-person level, I think a lot of preconceived notions and misconceptions would go away. I think a lot of this divisiveness comes from the fear of the unknown.” Radana: “This country holds together by responsibility and by values like duty to country. You have to balance rights and duties.” Mamadou: “You have to go for what you want in life. Nobody says it’s going to be easy. You are going to fail sometimes, but you have to keep moving forward in order to achieve your dreams.” Claudia: “Latinos are your neighbors. We love our home and our neighbors. This is home, and we are part of this wonderful, diverse country. We bring joy, music, dance food and so many other qualities to our neighborhoods. We deserve the same protections of life and safety just for being human, as we all are.” to permanent residency. He said that one employer even took care of everything for him. Radana said getting a visa has become much more difficult since 9/11 and rightfully so. She traveled before and after that event and says, “I know people get frustrated. It took me a long time, too, but I understand the need for increased security. “I was in the Czech Republic and Vienna last summer and they’re having problems with Syrian refugees now. How do you do a background check on a Syrian refugee who had to leave home without any documentation? When I applied for a visa, I was able to provide a birth certificate, graduation diplomas and tax records. There are always two sides to the immigration issue. “I think people are overblowing the immigration problem,” Radana added, arguing that immigration officials know what they are doing and do a good job screening people.”

Wunderbier! German Fest is back again
Review hires new reporter Vogel focuses on Forest Park and River Forest Thomas Vogel has joined the staff of the Forest Park Review and Wednesday Journal as a staff reporter. Vogel has worked as a freelance reporter for the Review and recently earned his master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. A native of the Oak Park and River Forest area, he is a graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School. In his new post, Vogel will be the lead reporter for the Review, covering village government, District 91 and District 209 schools, the park district and local business. In addition, he will cover River Forest for Wednesday Journal. Vogel’s arrival is timed with the shift to part-time status by Ken Trainor, who began his career at the Review and Journal 26 years ago as the Review’s editor. Over the past two years, among many other
duties, Trainor has served as an editorial coordinator for the Review, corralling a group of freelance reporters. With Trainor moving into semi-retirement, the Review will once again have a primary reporter in Vogel. Continuing as columnists and freelance reporters will be John Rice and Tom Holmes, two mainstays of the Review. “We’re looking for Tom Vogel to bring more cohesive coverage to Forest Park,” said Dan Haley, the publisher. “We’ve done our best the past couple of years and I thank Ken for holding things together. But Tom will bring more continuity to our reporting, more speed in reporting to our online and social platforms. And that will be good for the Review and for Forest Park.” Readers can reach Tom Vogel at 708-366-0600 or by email at tvogel@wjinc.com.

Gillian receives award from municipal conference Honor highlights intergovernmental achievement By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter
Forest Park Village Administrator Tim Gillian will be honored June 9 with the Jack Williams Intergovernmental Achievement Award from the West Central Municipal ConCon ference (WCMC), a regional ChicaChica go-area grouping of local governgovern ments. The annual award, given to one elected official or appointed staff member, recognizes excellence in intergovernmental cooperation, according to WCMC Executive Director Richard Pellegrino. “I’m extremely honored to receive that award,” Gillian said June 1. “Just about everything I do is collaboration. It’s collaboration between department heads, it’s collaboration between elected officials, it’s collaboration between governments. To be recognized for the efforts made, I’m honored.” Gillian mentioned the Madison Street revamp on Forest Park’s shared border with River Forest and the 911 dispatch center consolidation as recent projects that required communication across municipal boundaries. Pellegrino praised Gillian’s input on several WCMC committees and his deep knowledge of issues, including the “forceful” advocacy of the Local Government Distributive Fund, which gives local municipalities money from Illinois
state income tax revenues. “I don’t believe he’s missed a meeting that I can remember,” Pellegrino said June 1 of Gillian’s service to the WCMC. “The award is in honor of his dedication to intergovernmental cooperation.” The village administrator, a posi position first created in 1997, is an appointed post recommended to the Forest Park Village Council by the mayor and is responsible for the day-today management of village government. Gillian has a long history with public service in Forest Park. He was a reserve police officer from 1977 until 1995, when he was elected as a com commissioner on the village council. As part of his campaign platform, Gillian said, he called for the creation of the village administrator position. “The business end of running a municipality was becoming much more complex,” Gillian recalled, in particular the legal and human resources issues. “All those things required a full-time person,” Gillian said. “Times were changing. It was getting a lot rougher to keep up with the day-to-day of running the village.” Gillian said he has no plans to stop his work as administrator. “I’m happy here as long as the commissioners will have me,” Gillian said.
WELCOMING BILL Goes to governor from page 1 a court-issued, enforceable order, said Rep. Chris Welch, (D-7th), the chief sponsor of the Trust Act in the Illinois House. Sanctuary and welcoming city ordinances adopted by Oak Park, Chicago, Evanston, Berwyn and other communities, as well as Cook County, will be superseded by the Trust Act. Resolutions or ordinance under review by River Forest and Forest Park and other villages also could become moot. River Forest had intended to bring up a resolution for board discussion in June. It is uncertain if Forest Park is considering something similar. If signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, the bill would go into effect on July 1, said Sen. Don Harmon (D-39th) of Oak Park, a principal sponsor of the legislation in the upper chamber. The concern was that “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would press local law enforcement to enforce civil immigration matters, and that’s prohibited. Local officers will not be acting as an agent of the federal government. Police will be enforcing local laws,” Harmon said.

Progress reported on two Harlem properties By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter
The owner of American Security Services, 1515 S. Harlem Ave., bought three adjacent lots, including R Place Bar, for $230,000 on May 2, according to documents filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds, and plans to expand parking. James Newsome, owner of American Security Services, a longtime Forest Park private security contractor, said June 1 that the construction, which will include new landscaping and a flagpole, should be done by August and should not substantially affect his dayto-day business or customers. One of the purchased lots included a home, which was demolished last week. “We are in demo right now, just getting some permitting done,” Newsome said. “We are trying to get some ducks in a row.” Newsome denied that he purchased the R Place lot but documents filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds show otherwise. Cook County Recorder of Deeds documents list 1521 S. Harlem Parking Lot, an LLC created in April and registered to James Newsome, as the buyer of the three lots, from RCR Partnership. RCR Inc., also known as R Place, according to documents filed with the Illinois Secretary of State, was created
At least two measures — Senate Bill 31 and House Resolution 426 — were introduced in the General Assembly. The latter would have forbidden schools, healthcare facilities and churches from granting access to state and local law enforcement. It also would have barred employees of schools from asking about a student’s immigration status. The safe havens language did not make it into the rewritten law, said Welch, a principal sponsor of the House bill. Both SB 31 and HR 426 passed their respective chambers on a party-line vote. The Senate bill was approved in early May; the House bill was rewritten and approved on Memorial Day. The Senate voted in favor of what is called a concurrence, i.e., agreement with the re-written House bill, on May 31. At least 36 states and the District of Columbia have considered legislation this year on both sides of the question of sanctuary jurisdictions or noncompliance with immigration detainers, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. California, New York, Nevada, Maryland and Vermont either have adopted or are considering measures, according to an April 10 article in the New York Times. Proponents say the legislation is meant to increase trust between immigrant communities and police. This is particularly important, proponents say, because without that trust undocumented immigrants may be afraid to report crimes, such as domestic violence and sexual abuse. In a March 28 article in the Chicago Tribune, Cook
in 2002 and lists Ronald Milchhoefer Sr. and Ronald Milchhoefer Jr. as owners. A call to R Place for comment June 1 was not returned by press time. As of now, the bar is still in business. The Review, in January 2014, reported a possible sale of R Place, 1527 S. Harlem Ave. That deal was eventually scrapped.
Former gas station site still vacant Steve Glinke, director of the Forest Park Department of Public Health and Safety, said May 31 he ordered the owners of 949 Harlem Ave. to put up fencing around the still-vacant lot, formerly a gas station. “I just kinda got tired of people parking their cars there, dumping stuff,” Glinke said, referring to the lot at the corner of Harlem Avenue and Harvard Street. “It was a bit of a chore to get them to clean it up.” “They are good people,” Glinke said of the owners. “They agreed to it.” Glinke added he was unaware of any new developments to the site. Documents filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds show Combined Real Estate, a Lincolnshire LLC, bought the lot in 2015. When reached by phone June 5, Bhambra Menjinder, owner of MPG Ventures, a Northbrook LLC that owns Combined Real Estate LLC declined comment and referred requests to his business partner.
County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx expressed concern that the current administration’s language and actions on illegal immigration are “creating a chilling effect,” in which victims of crimes are choosing not to testify for fear of being deported if they show up in court. A spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office could not provide statistics to back that up. A confidential hotline, 312-603-8678, has since been set up in the state’s attorney’s office for people to complain about immigration scams. While the presidential campaign of Donald Trump focused attention on stripping federal funds from sanctuary cities, there has been no mention of states that enacted similar measures. In January, Trump signed an executive order stating that cities that do not comply with federal immigration enforcement agents “are not eligible to receive federal grants, except as deemed necessary for law enforcement purposes by the Attorney General or the Secretary [of Homeland Security],” according to the executive order. In late March, 34 cities and counties filed separate suits or supported legal action to block enforcement of the order, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times. A month later, a U.S. District Court judge temporarily blocked the executive order, saying, among other things that “the constitution vests the spending powers in Congress, not the president, so the order cannot constitutionally place new conditions on federal funds.”

Armed robber gets away in a stolen car A 57-year-old man told police, June 3 around 7:30 a.m., that he was robbed of about $250 by two unknown men on the 1000 block of Harlem Avenue. The man told officers he was walking north after cashing a check at the currency exchange at Roosevelt Road and Harlem Avenue. A 2009 Honda, traveling south, pulled to the curb and a man, described in the police report as around 5-feet-8 and in his mid-20s, got out from the Honda’s passenger’s side door, and flashed a gun at the man, demanding money. The victim gave his wallet to the man, who then fled in the Honda. The victim took down the license plate number. The car was, according to the police report, stolen out of Chicago. No arrest has been made.

A 23-year-old woman fought off an attacker, described as a 40-something man, after he grabbed her from behind on the 800 block of Desplaines Avenue on June 5 around 2 a.m. The 23-year-old woman, according to the police report, began punching the man’s face and body. The pair struggled and fell to the ground. The women eventually separated herself from the man, who then fled east on York Street. No arrest has been made.
Attempted Armed Robbery An unidentified man tried to rob a Citgo gas station, 7400 Roosevelt Road, on May 27 around midnight. The 41-year-old cashier told police a “stocky, muscular” 25- or 30-year-old man came into the store, flashed a semi-automatic firearm and said, “Gimme the money, gimme the damn money, open the drawer.” The cashier then locked himself in an “inner security door,” according to the police report, and the would-be robber fled. No money was taken. There is video of the incident but the man remains unidentified.
Assault Police arrested a 39-year-old Aurora woman, May 28 around 2 p.m., for assault and drug equipment possession after she allegedly threw a glass bottle at a taxi driver. The driver, parked on the 500 block of Desplaines Avenue, told police the woman threw a glass bottle at him after he refused to take her to the West Side of Chicago to “buy illegal narcotics.” Officers saw broken glass along the driver’s side of the cab and saw the woman “lying on the back seat of the taxi” alongside three hypodermic syringes, a couple of pipes and a small bag with a “white powdery residue.” The woman was given a July 11 court date and released.
Burglaries on Hannah Avenue A 25-year-old woman told police, May 30, that two unidentified men tried to break into her home on the 800 block of Hannah Avenue around 3 p.m. The woman’s dog, according to the police report, was growling at the back door, and the woman noticed a man with dreadlocks and a black hoodie trying to use her grill fork and spatula to pry open the back door. The woman yelled and the man, along with another man, described as wearing a white shirt, who was standing on the back lawn, fled. Police from Forest Park and the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office followed a few people driving in a car that matched the description, but no arrests were made. Another resident of the 800 block of Hannah, in a separate incident, told police around 3:30 p.m. that her 32-inch LCD television, worth around $400, was taken from her home. Nothing else was reported missing. The woman had left her home around 1 p.m. to go shopping.
Car theft A 31-year-old man called police on June 3 to report that someone took his 2009 Buick around 11 p.m. from the 7200 block of Adams Street. The man told officers he left the car running, with the keys inside. He also said he had a handgun in the glove compartment. The car was last seen on the West Side of Chicago by Chicago and Oak Park police. No arrest has been made.
Home invasion On June 4 around 11:30 p.m., someone came into a home on the 100 block of Elgin through a bedroom window while the residents were asleep on the couch. The couple’s daughter was asleep at the time in the bedroom. The pair, according to the police report, awoke to find their Jeep Compass, house keys and a 32-inch television missing. Chicago police later found the Jeep near Cicero Avenue and Van Buren Street.
Walmart employee arrested A 23-year-old Walmart employee was arrested, May 26, for theft after police were called to the store at 1300 Desplaines around 7 p.m. The thefts reportedly occurred on five separate occasions and totaled about $300. Walmart employees told officers they have video evidence. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, May 26-June 4, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

As students of a single gender school, we were given the unique experience of being empowered. Trinity has taught us to be strong and independent. I know I am walking out of those doors with greater confidence than when I walked in four short years ago. - Savannah Martinez, Valedictorian, Class of 2017 Boston University

Celebrating 100 Years
OPINION O U R
V I E W
Mr. Liddell’s caring impact
I
t takes a lot of people to turn a school, and, by all accounts, including our own reporting, the Forest Park Middle School needed a lot of turning a decade and more ago when its reputation in town was for contention among students, subpar academics and, as an even earlier reason than Proviso East for families to leave town. Much has happened since then and when people are looking for individuals to credit, the focus often turns to Bob Liddell. Brought on 11 years ago as a behavioral interventionist, Liddell was a non-traditional hire. While he had taken some education courses in college, his work career was spent in corporate life where he wound up as “diversity officer” for a good-sized company. It was his ability to work with disparate groups of people, to listen well, to communicate directly and honestly that has made him such a revered figure at the middle school, even as, this summer he heads to retirement. Liddell looks back at the charge he was given by the superintendents and principals he has worked with. And it wasn’t to drop the hammer as a disciplinarian. He was told “not to be a disciplinarian but to get to know the kids and be someone they can turn to.” And when our Tom Holmes talked to a good number of students that is exactly what he heard from them. “He’s like a mentor to me because he got me through a lot of deep stuff a couple of months ago and he sort of made me into the person I am today, I’m going to be sad to see him leave,” said Oxavionne Bryant. Said Jalen Cruz, “He’s like a family member to me. He taught me the way I am right now.” Liddell has boiled down the root causes of most bad middle school behavior to three issues: anger management, conflict management and emotional control. And he has led the school’s focus on reinforcing positive behavior (PBIS) as the primary tool to improve the school’s culture. He goes with the 80/20 rule though he divided it 80/15/5. Eighty percent of students respond well to positive reinforcement. Fifteen percent need more direct connections and mentoring from teachers and staff with whom they talk each day. And then there is the five percent of students, the ones most commonly bounced out of most public schools through hard discipline. Those young people get what Liddell calls a “wrap-around” where all the resources – parents, ministers, probation officers and school staff – are brought out to envelop that student before the bottom falls out. Joe Pisano, the middle school principal, gives Liddell much credit for transforming the school’s culture. Supt. Lou Cavallo agrees. “Mr. Liddell is one of a kind and we will greatly miss him.” That said, the position will continue with a new person come fall. It is easy sometimes to be dismissive of the possibilities that a single person in the right place at just the moment can have such impact. Bob Liddell was that person and he has our respect and our thanks.
Pastor Mitty reflects on Memorial Day
T
he past as roots and the future as fruits. Gerhardt “Asch” Aschenbrenner dropped into Pastor Walter Mitty’s office at the Poplar Park Community Church the Friday before Memorial Day to remind him to include in the prayers for Sunday all the names of Poplar Park residents who had died in the service of their country. Talking about Memorial Day quickly led to one of those “do you remember when” conversations. “Do you remember,” Asch asked his pastor, “when we used to have big parades on Memorial Day, and all the vets who had put on twenty or thirty pounds since they were in the Army tried to squeeze into their old uniforms?” Mitty, who was in kindergarten when his parishioner was fighting in Korea, replied, “I remember going to those parades in Manitowoc when I was a boy. In fact I even marched in one as a Boy Scout.” The two were close enough in age to share memories of spraying ether into their cars’ carburetors in January to get the engine to turn over in the cold, rotary dial telephones, party lines, Civil Defense supplies being stored in the schools, buying a Coke for a nickel, airlines named TWA and Pan Am, 78 and then 45 rpm records and stores not being open on Sundays. Asch sighed, smiled, closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair. Pastor Walt knew what he was thinking— “those were the good old days.” After Asch left, Mitty got back to work on his sermon in which he was trying to tie a 2000 year old reading from the Book of Acts to Memorial Day, but his mind wandered back to Asch’s unspoken “those were the good old days.” On Sunday he looked out over the congregation and saw that, as usual on Memorial Day weekend, attendance was low. “The beginning of the vacation season,” he said under his breath, “from work and from church.” It was when he finished reading the few announcements in the bulletin to the thirty or so souls in the pews that the tension in the sanctuary increased dramatically. When he asked if there were other announcements, Sharissa Hawkins stood up and got right to the point. “I have a letter to our state senator in support of the bill in Springfield that welcomes all immigrants,” she announced, “and I want you all to sign it at coffee hour after church. It’s fine that we remember the past on Memorial Day, but we also need to remember hundreds of immigrants here in Poplar Park and thousands more in our state who look to the future with fear because of what our president is threatening to do.” Pastor Walt didn’t see that one coming. “Sharissa,” he thought, “would you at least give me a heads up before you drop a bomb like that?” For the next hour, Pastor Mitty looked, on the outside anyway, like he was leading the service. But on the
inside he was rehearsing different options for handling what he anticipated would be a lot of contentious drama between Asch and Sharissa during the coffee hour. But, as it turned out, Asch and his wife Dorothy left right after the final hymn—something about seeing the grandchildren—so the anticipated drama at coffee hour never materialized. Relieved, Pastor Walt went home, called his sister-in-law Susan to catch up on how his nephews were doing, made an iced coffee, tilted back in his Lazy Boy and got back into a book he was reading about the Lewis and Clark expedition. When he woke up the next morning, he discovered that the confrontation between Asch and Sharissa, which although it never happened, was still on his mind. The Memorial Day sky was blue with white puffy clouds floating leisurely along and the temperature was pushing 70 degrees, so he decided to process his unsettled mental state by taking a walk. When he arrived at Main Street, he saw most of the shops were closed for the holiday, but to his surprise the door of Bernie Rolvaag’s book store was propped open and he spotted Bernie vacuuming the carpet. The owner of History/Herstory smiled and turned the machine off when he noticed his friend coming through the door. Anticipating Pastor Walt’s question, Bernie explained, “I’m have a group of veterans coming in this afternoon to talk about their experiences in the Army, so I came in early to tidy up a bit. What’s going on?” That’s all the pastor of Poplar Park Community Church needed to talk about the confrontation that never happened but which, for some reason, was still upsetting him. After listening for ten minutes, Bernie responded by saying, “You know, Walt, because most of my books are about history in one way or another, a lot of my customers are history buffs. And I have noticed that some are stuck in the past. They talk about it as being the good old days. “But others read history, because they are worried about the future. They don’t want to go backwards into some idyllic past which is mainly a figment of people’s ‘out of touch with reality’ imaginations, but they don’t want to plunge headlong into the future without making sure they don’t repeat the mistakes of the past.” Mitty said, “Kind of like putting the best of Asch and the best of Sharissa together in one package.” Bernie nodded and said, “I think that is President Trump’s problem. He’s so sure of himself that he imagines that he can upset the apple cart and replace it his way without doing any harm. He is living in the illusion that he is the first and smartest person to have ever tried to change the system. Serious people, like those vets coming in this afternoon, don’t want to go back to the past, but life has humbled them enough that they fear ramming off into the future without having learned from the past.” “Better than my sermon yesterday,” thought Pastor Walt as he continued his walk on a beautiful spring day.”
