Third contract in two years for Supt. James Henderson

During a regular meeting on June 14, the Proviso Township High School District 209 Board of Education voted 4-2 to give District 209 Supt. James Henderson his third contract in two years.

Board President Della Patterson, along with members Theresa Kelly, Rodney Alexander, and Sam Valtierrez voted for the new contract while members Amanda Grant and Ned Wagner voted against. Board member Claudia Medina was absent.

The new contract comes three months after perhaps the longest teacher strike in the district’s history — a period of nearly three weeks when the superintendent repeatedly canceled bargaining sessions. Union officials said one of the main points of contention was the superintendent’s lack of good-faith negotiating.

Teachers, parents and community members have also lambasted Supt. Henderson’s overhaul of central office functions, with complaints pouring in over several months about the lack of administrative responsiveness, poor IT capabilities, regular fights that teachers

Snapchat crowd storms pool

Property damage, threats to lifeguards as police respond

An out-of-control crowd of teens storming the Park District of Forest Park Aquatic Center, 7501 Harrison St., on the evening on June 14 led the park district to ban nonresidents who don’t have pool passes until further notice.

While the village and park district accounts disagree somewhat on crowd size and the scale of the damage, they agree on certain basic facts. The park district was alerted that someone sent an invitation to a pool party via the Snapchat messaging app, and a few hundred teens responded. The pool staff stopped letting people in once the pool reached safety capacity, but remaining teens kept trying to get in, jumping over the fencing and breaking through the entrance, leading the park district to call police.

In response to the incident, the park district stopped allowing non-residents who don’t have pool passes into the pool until further notice. Jackie Iovinelli, the district’s executive director, told the Review that this policy is in place to make it easier for pool staff to keep track of how many people are in the pool at any given time. The policy will hit the pool financially, since 75% of people who don’t use pool passes are non-residents, but she said that safety took priority.

According to Iovinelli, at around 12:30 p.m. on June 14 the park district was alerted that someone sent a Snapchat message inviting people to come to the Aquatic Center.

Worried the crowds would exceed capacity and get out of control, park officials called the Forest Park police, who told them that officers patrolling the area were advised of the situation, and to call 911 if things got out of control.

The overwhelming dissatisfaction among teachers and students with the superintendent’s job performance didn’t register with board members who approved Henderson’s third contract in two years.

The initial contract, approved after he was unanimously hired by the board in August 2020, was for three years and paid a salary of $250,000.

The pool staff was notified of the situation.

Iovinelli said that at 6:30 p.m., the pool reopened for an evening open swim. While she said large crowds weren’t unusual, especially on hot days, the pool reached capacity by about 7:05 p.m. and they again closed the entrance. At that point, 150 people were inside.

In response, the crowd charged through the front gate and jumped the fence on the east side of the center, going through the splash pad construction site. The police report of the incident stated “50 to 75 teens rushed the various apparatus” to get into the pool, while Iovinelli said that 100 people went through the gates and 150 people jumped the fence. The statement from Mayor Rory Hoskins, which was posted on the village’s Facebook page on June 15, said “about 40 to 50” teens rushed through the front gates and “about 60 kids climbed the rear fence and entered the pool.”

All accounts agree that a group of teens – the police report puts the number at “several hundred” – gathered by the front entrance and refused to leave. Forest Park police called Berwyn, Broadview, Maywood, Melrose Park, North Riverside, Oak Park and River Forest police departments, as well as the Cook County Sheriff, for additional manpower. The police officers spent the next 90 minutes clearing the area, with the police report mentioning that most of the young people “repeatedly refused requests to leave, made threats and antagonized officers on scene.”

Iovinelli said the teens who were in the pool refused to leave.

His second contract, a five-year agreement approved in June 2021, included a salary of $262,500, including an unspecified pension contribution paid by the district, $32,129 in annual health insurance premiums, a $12,500 annuity, and a $6,000-a-year vehicle allowance. That contract was voted on by all board members except Medina and Grant.

During the June 14 meeting, board member Theresa Kelly said Henderson has shown that he “can move academics forward” and “we have not had any problems with Dr. Henderson.”

Board member Rodney Alexander framed the new contract as protecting a superintendent subjected to “personal attacks, discrimination and sheer hatred.”

personnel, before adding that for most administrations, “once your name is sullied,” future employment becomes difficult.

Wagner said, while he empathizes with what “he’s gone through the last couple of years,” he felt that the superintendent’s “very generous contract last year” should be sufficient to allow the superintendent to achieve the goals the board has for him.

Grant said that the board has not formally evaluated Henderson and singled out a clause in the contract that would commit the district to a three-year payout “if Henderson is released for any reason at all — that’s money taxpayers are on the hook for.”

She added that the new contract also calls for an extra $31,000 annuity in addition to the district’s payments into Henderson’s pension.

“There is so much [in the contract] that

I do not understand why we’d even consider giving this out, when we’ve made it clear there’s no money for teachers, or at least the teachers who already work here,” Grant said.

She was referencing the tense disputes between Henderson and the Proviso Teachers Union over pay increases during the nearly three-week strike and the $7,500 recruitment bonus the board approved on June 14 that would provide 19 recently hired out-of-state teachers with a $7,500 retention bonus.

“We already have a contract in place,” Grant said. “This does not make sense to me, and I do not think this is a sign of any kind of healthy management that’s happening.”

Forest Park signs onto sustainability agreement Oak Park and Broadview follow suit

Forest Park became the first village to officially join the Cross-Community Climate Collaborative (C4) after the village council approved the Memorandum of Understanding on June 13.

Under the memorandum, Broadview, Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest will agree to work together to implement environmentally sustainable projects in their communities. For example, they would bid jointly for electric car charging stations, which they expect would save money through economies of scale.

During the June 13 meeting, Commissioner Jessica Voogd, who has consistently advocated for the village to adopt environmentally sustainable policies, said that, while C4 wasn’t perfect, “perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of good.”

“I just want to give a big thanks and recognize these women, Mayor Thompson, and [River Forest Village] President [Cathy] Adduci and [Oak Park Village] President [Vicki] Scaman for their leadership and action on this issue,” she said, adding that she looks forward to whatever the collaboration would bring.

Village approves lead replacement project Jackson Boulevard from Desplaines to Madison

The village council took its first major step toward getting rid of the lead service lines, voting unanimously on June 13 to approve the sewer replacement contract under the portion of Jackson Boulevard between Desplaines Avenue and Madison Street.

The Illinois Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act, which took effect at the start of 2022, requires Forest Park to replace all of its service lines by at least 2040. Because the village was already planning to repave this section of Jackson Boulevard, village officials agreed to do this first. Village Administrator Moses Amidei said he expects the village to have

a better sense of what other major watermain-related projects the village will undertake once its lead line replacement grant applications come back by the start of next year.

Under the act, all municipalities must prepare the full inventory of lead-line work by April 15, 2023. The inventory will determine just how quickly each municipality would be required to replace the sewer lines. Generally speaking, the more lead sewer lines there are, the more time would be allowed.

When conducting major sewer projects, municipalities were already required to replace the lead lines up to the shut-off valve at the property line. Now that the Line Replacement Act has taken effect, they have to replace the pipes all the way up to the building itself.

According to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, as of 2020, the most recent year for which data is available, 1,849 out of 3,434 sewer lines in Forest Park were

lead lines. If the final total is more than 1,200 but less than 5,000, Forest Park would need to replace at least 6% of the pipes per year over no more than 17 years.

During the April 25 village council meeting, Amidei recommended holding off on water main projects for at least a year to give the village time to figure out how much state and federal funding it would be able to get to offset some of the costs. But he also recommended replacing the pipes under Jackson Boulevard because the village was already going to repave it — and delaying re-pavement by a year would result in losing the federal portion of the funding.

While Berwyn-based Clearview Sewer and Plumbing submitted the lowest bid of $96,355.65, Forest Park rejected it because it didn’t supply all the necessary documents and didn’t list some of the cost estimates.

Instead, the village awarded the contract to the second-lowest bidder, Joel Kennedy Constructing Corp., of Chicago’s Sauga-

nash neighborhood, which submitted a $112,500 bid.

During the June 13 meeting, Amidei lauded the vote as an important step forward.

“Thank you for [approving the contract],” he said. “That’s going to be the start of 20 years of efforts by the village to replace the lead service lines.”

Amidei reiterated that the village is looking to obtain as much grant funding as possible. He said the village council should get a better sense of what kind of water main projects it would be able to do by early next year.

“In the coming months, and probably later in the year and early 2023, we’ll learn about [the results of] the applications to the state we’ve made to fund lead service replacement,” Amidei said. “That’s going to determine what we’re going to do from a water main replacement standpoint, because any water main we touch, we’d have to do lead line replacement.”

Three decades of love and dedication And Laurie Kokenes has no plans to stop any time soon

The board of Forest Park’s Chamber of Commerce recently gifted its executive director, Laurie Kokenes, with a getaway to Galena as a way of saying thank you for reaching the 30-year mark in her service to the chamber and to the village.

Rave reviews poured in from chamber members and the wider Forest Park community as they reflected on the meaning of her three decades of service.

Trying to make a go of a small business is often challenging. Chamber board member Dexter Cura explained how Kokenes supports owners like him. “Laurie is such an amazing asset to the chamber. She has really helped to spread the word about my Bespoke Flipbook photobooth business!

Not only was I able to showcase my service at some chamber events, but there have been numerous posts and emails as well sent out to the community about my business.”

Mayor Rory Hoskins told a story illustrating one of the many ways Kokenes in particular and the Chamber in general partners with the village. “Laurie is always great to work with. What stands out to me is the Spring of 2020. When the village began interpreting Covid-19 guidelines for essential businesses and communicating our expectations to business owners and consumers, Laurie helped us to amplify our message. She continued to provide invaluable support during the period where we began encouraging residents to get vaccinations.”

“Now that our lives have returned to normal,” he said, “Laurie should be credited for the success of events like Casket Races or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Laurie and her team make Forest Park shine!!!”

Kokenes is heartened to see events returning like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with an estimated 10,000 spectators packing the sidewalks along Madison Street.

That’s one of the main goals of the Chamber, she said, to draw people to the street from out of town with events like the parade, casket races and the wine walks, so they can see the great businesses in town.

The 71-year-old Kokenes has no plans of retiring. Not only does she love her job, but she believes that the Chamber will continue to have a significant impact in the years to come. an ID indicating they are residents. Iovinelli said that the suspension is “indefinite until we feel there is not a threat to our staff or patrons.”

Both she and Hoskins said the police and the park district plan to discuss ways to better secure the park.

“Our goal is to always provide a safe place for our young staff to work, for our patrons to enjoy leisure time and to protect our amenities,” Iovinelli said. “We will continue to have conversations with our police department to only make us better.”

Hoskins said he was satisfied with the way the police handed the situation.

“Our command staff reported that the officers did great work in deescalating numerous situations, which could have gone much worse,” he said.

Inaugural Juneteenth parade unites west suburbs Events demonstrate growing importance of holiday

Back in 2008, when Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins (then a commissioner) hosted the very first Juneteenth Pool Party, the holiday’s staying power in the village was still an open question.

“It’s unclear whether Forest Park will

embrace Juneteenth in the coming years,” wrote Forest Park Review columnist John Rice in an article praising the holiday, about which he learned from Hoskins.

“Will we have a parade here and save the mayor a trip to South Shore? Will we have a formal observance, or quiet family barbecues?”

Fourteen years later, Rice’s questions have been definitively answered and Hoskins, a native of Galveston, Texas, where Juneteenth originated, is looking more and more prescient.

For instance, the U.S. stock markets were closed Monday, June 20, to observe the holiday — the first time in history, according to the Wall Street Journal.

More locally, the official Juneteenth flag flew above municipal buildings across the west suburbs, including in Forest Park and Broadview.

Speaking of Broadview, the village that made Juneteenth a paid local holiday in 2020 hosted its biggest Juneteenth celebration ever over a period of three days this weekend, with the festivities culminating

with a fireworks show on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker joined Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch at Memorial Park in Hillside for the speaker’s inaugural Juneteenth Father’s Day barbecue.

Recreation Board can’t make quorum, looking for members Two recent meetings cancelled

The Forest Park Recreation Board is looking to fill its two vacant seats as it had to cancel the past two meetings due to the lack of a quorum.

Originally created to supervise villageowned pocket parks, its mission evolved to serve as more of a coordinator for village volunteer projects as most of its parks have been leased to the Park District of Forest Park.

On May 12, the rec board was supposed to discuss how it was going to screen nonprofit organizations that would get its support, get updates on the dog park fundraiser headed by 6th grader Juliet Harrington, and reschedule the community clean-up that got derailed twice due to rain. But they were unable to discuss any of this due to the lack of a quorum. The same issue at the June 9 meeting caused the board to shelve

the issues again.

During the June 13 village council meeting, Commissioner of Public Property Jessica Voogd, who serves as the village council liaison to the rec board, spoke about the issue. She invited Forest Park residents to send applications to her via e-mail or by calling the village. Mayor Rory Hoskins said that, while he would consider the candidates, he wanted to take the time with the appointment process to ensure that the new appointees wouldn’t cause quorum issues.

Like all the other village boards and commissions, Recreation Board members are appointed by Forest Park mayors and confirmed by the village council. While it is supposed to have seven members, two of the seats are currently vacant.

Members serve for staggered five-year terms. Meetings are usually held every second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m., and they’ve been held online since the start of the pandemic. Under the village municipal code, the only eligibility requirement is that members must be Forest Park residents. During the June 10 meeting, board

chair Amy Binns-Calvey remarked that Harrington would technically be eligible.

In 2020, the village leased four of its pocket parks — Reiger Park, 1526 Circle Ave.; Lathrop Park, 1138 Lathrop Ave.; Popelka Park, 501 Thomas Ave., and Remembrance Park, 7341 Randolph St. — to the park district for 99 years for a symbolic lease of $1 a year. As part of the deal, the park district took over the responsibility for maintaining and improving the parks.

Veterans Park, 631 Circle Ave., wasn’t included in the deal because its ownership is unclear, and neither was the dog park at 632 Circle Ave. In September 2021, the village council changed the rec board’s primary duty to helping residents and organizations serve the community, which can include “influencing the maintenance, safety and improvement of the village-owned green space and recreational public property.”

The board would be “available as a resource and a possible coordination center” for Forest Park residents and organizations wishing to organize volunteer projects.

Voogd previously told the Review that

final decisions on which volunteer efforts would get village support will be made by village administrator’s office and, if necessary, voted on by the council.

The June 9 meeting only had two members in attendance – Binns-Calvey and Bob Dorneker. While Voogd and Director of Public Works Sal Stella attended as well, they didn’t count toward the quorum. After waiting about 10 minutes to see if anyone else would join the meeting, Binns-Calvey called it a day. But before the attendees disbursed, they agreed that recruiting more members would be a good idea.

During the June 13 meeting, Voogd summarized the situation and encouraged everyone in attendance to spread the word about the vacancies.

“You can email me if you’d like the application, you can call the village,” she said.

After the meeting, Hoskins told the Review that, while he would consider any candidate Voogd recommends, he wasn’t in any particular hurry to make the appointments.

“You don’t want to appoint someone who won’t attend the meetings,” he said.

Whatever happened to Roy L. Frakes?

hirty years ago on July 20, Roy Frakes left his apartment in Forest Park to go to work in Chicago.

He would never return.

Roy and his wife had moved to Forest Park a few months earlier when Roy took a job in downtown Chicago. Like many young couples new to the Chicago area, he and his wife selected Forest Park for our easy access to downtown and the western suburbs.

Roy and his wife were friendly and courteous. Other than myself, their landlord, I don’t think the other residents in the building know that he was a deputy U.S. marshal at the Dirksen Federal Building where Jeffrey Erikson was on trial for a series of bank robberies in 1990 and 1991.

Erickson and his wife had robbed banks in the Chicago area until July, 1991 when the FBI caught up with them. Erickson

was captured and his wife killed herself after being wounded exchanging gunfire with the FBI agents. In July of 1992, Jeffrey Erickson was on trial at the Dirksen Federal Building. As he was leaving court in a suit and handcuffs, he somehow obtained a key to the handcuffs and was able to disarm another U.S. deputy marshal who cried out for help. Immediately upon entering the area, Roy was shot in the head by Erickson. He was shot again in the head as he lay on the ground and died immediately. The bank robber and now murderer attempted to escape from the Dirksen Federal Building through the underground garage entrance. He exchanged gunfire with Special Deputy Marshal Harry Belluomini and both men were wounded. Harry was struck four times and later died of his wounds. Lying wounded on the driveway leading from

The parade commenced at Randolph and Brown in Forest Park, coursing west on Washington Boulevard. A float carrying a host of elected officials, including the mayors of the host suburbs — joined by Congressman Danny K. Davis and Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi — led the procession.

The Proviso East Marching Band played music while young dancers from area suburbs strutted in the streets. The parade terminated at Proviso East High School in Maywood, where numerous vendors were staged.

“This has been a great opportunity for the four villages to get together and plan this event to bring more awareness and education to the communities,” said LaSondra Banks, Maywood’s community engagement manager who was on the parade’s planning committee.

Banks said the parade is the “first of many we’ll do annually,” adding that volunteering with the committee was a “labor

of love.”

Michelle Major, of Oak Park, volunteered to help put together the history exposition on the grounds of Proviso East, which helped frame Juneteenth’s historic importance.

The holiday marks the June 19, 1865 announcement of Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger’s General Order No. 3, which proclaimed emancipation for the enslaved people in Texas.

“I think the traveling museum was a great way to center the narrative about today,” Major said. “It not only tells the story that’s often known, but some little known facts and the Illinois connection, and the way white people can celebrate Juneteenth in an authentic way.”

Jewliza Hill, a Forest Park resident, said she felt a responsibility to attend Saturday’s parade, if only for her daughter Laila Johnson’s sake.

“Before this, I had not participated in a Juneteenth parade or festivities,” Hill said. “With everything that happened during the pandemic, I wanted to make sure I was present for this. I want my daughter to be able to know what’s going on in the world and to see our people and our culture.”

ATM machine stolen from McGaffer’s Saloon

An ATM was stolen from McGaffer’s Saloon, 7737 Roosevelt Rd., sometime in the morning of June 19.

Two witnesses who called police reported they drove by the tavern at around 7:15 a.m. and didn’t notice anything amiss, but when they drove back at around 8:20 a.m., they saw the front door broken. They stopped by to take a closer look, and neither of them saw anyone inside.

The police report indicated police believe the theft may have occurred earlier than the aforementioned time frame.

After working with the Oak Park police department to make sure the suspect wasn’t still in the building, the Forest Park police confirmed that the ATM was stolen.

Officers attempted to access the security cameras of the 7-Eleven location directly west of the property, at 7749 Roosevelt Rd, but the employee said that they wouldn’t be able to get access until the following morning. Officers also tried to access footage from the cameras mounted on the west side of the McGaffer’s building, and at the Portillo’s Hot Dogs location at 7740 Roosevelt Rd., but they weren’t able to get the footage from either source at the time of the report. The tavern doesn’t have internal security cameras. The review of the area traffic cameras didn’t give any leads.

The officers also questioned people living in the residential units above the tavern, but they reportedly didn’t see or hear anything.

McGaffer’s employees didn’t know how much cash was inside the ATM at the time of the burglary.

A man attempted to steal a window airconditioning unit from an apartment on the 1200 block of Elgin Avenue while the tenant was inside.

The victim told police that on June 13 at 2:32 p.m., he heard a pounding noise on his unit’s back door. He went to check it out and saw a man trying to remove his window air-conditioning unit. The victim con-

fronted the suspect, causing the suspect to drop the AC unit on the ground and run north through the alley, then across Harlem Avenue. The victim said he caught up to the suspect, but the suspect took out a knife and told the victim not to come any closer. The victim gave up the chase. He said he last saw the suspect running east in the alley near the Harlem Avenue/Roosevelt Road intersection.

Subsequent investigation revealed that the rear screen door was torn and the door regulator connecting the screen door to the door frame was ripped up. There was no sign that the suspect ever made his way inside.

Retail theft A customer attempted to scam the Bed, Bath and Beyond location at 215 Harlem Ave. by trying to pass off a few items she took off the shelf as returns and ran off with the items when the scam didn’t work.

On June 16 at 5:12 p.m., the security cameras captured the suspect enter the store with a shopping cart that reportedly only contained her belongings. She was then captured taking a pressure cooker and a comforter off the shelf, put them in the shopping cart and went to customer service, saying she was returning the items for a refund. The employee refused and the woman left the store.

The suspect then left the store with the items, and a man helped her load them into a 2007 Grey Hyundai Sonata. The pair got into the car and drove off, but the security camera captured the license plate. They were last seen heading south on Harlem Avenue.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, June 13-19, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Another new contract?

F

or the third time in just two years, the school board at Proviso Township High School District 209 has lavished a still richer, still more protective contract on Supt. James Henderson.

We find it inexplicable and we find it disgraceful.

Just two years ago, with a sorry and dubious record as a school administrator bouncing among districts before skedaddling, this school board unanimously hired Henderson from a failed district in Mississippi. That contract was for three years and paid a generous but fair wage.

A year ago with Henderson under deserved fire from many sources, the board approved a new contract, this one for five years and loaded with ups and extras.

Now, as the district comes off a long, divisive teachers strike, a narrow board majority ripped up that contract and replaced it with a new five-year deal with an additional $31,000 annuity.

More significantly, though, this contract guarantees a three-year payout if the superintendent is dismissed for any reason.

That’s a guarantee his sorry performance to date in no way warrants. Board member Rodney Alexander defended that job assurance as necessary because Henderson has been subjected to “personal attacks, discrimination and sheer hatred.” Further, he said, “once your name is sullied” it is hard to find a new job.

James Henderson arrived in this district with his name already sullied. The board failed in its due diligence two years ago and now a flippable majority is guaranteeing his employment.

This will not end well.

Shared efforts, shared values

Two stories this week reflect the power and the grace of collaboration among local villages that have not previously been aligned.

On page one we celebrate the growth of Juneteenth as a new national holiday, but one with a strong local history in Forest Park where Mayor Rory Hoskins, a native of Galveston, Texas, has championed its recognition for 14 years with the annual Juneteenth pool party.

This year the Juneteenth recognition grew exponentially with four towns — Forest Park, Broadview, Oak Park and River Forest — jointly planning a West Villages Parade, Oak Park celebrating with a barbeque in Taylor Park, House Speaker Chris Welch hosting a Juneteenth Fathers’ Day barbeque, and Broadview capping off a three-day Juneteenth weekend with fireworks.

We also report this week on these same four villages signing on to the Cross-Community Climate Collaborative (C4). This critical work will focus shared local efforts on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and working together on other environmental projects.

This proposal was spearheaded by Katrina Thompson, the go-getter mayor of Broadview. And rightly, it reflects and acknowledges the equity issues that climate change imposes, particularly on communities of color and with lesser investment and incomes.

Our future is shared. From learning the lessons Juneteenth can teach us to taking on local responsibility for our climate, we will do better when we work together.

Does D209 need a stand-alone Black History course?

D

oes anyone know who Justin Dart was?

The Black History course just completed its first lap around the D209 curriculum.

Dart was not Black, but I will reference him later in the piece to give perspective on the importance of a stand-alone course focusing on African Americans.

When I interviewed D209 administrators a few years ago, the consensus was that a required-for-graduation course on Black history was not necessary, because Black history and culture had already been integrated into American History and English Literature courses.

But that, argued D209 board member Rodney Alexander and PTMAN Chairman Reginald Saffo, was not enough.

Hispanics brought with them their religion, language and culture when they crossed the Rio Grande and headed north.

When Africans were brought here in the Middle Passage, all of that was taken away, with lasting effects to this day. That’s why, Alexander and Saffo argued, a course on Black history not only needs to be taught at Proviso East but should be required for graduation, even though Hispanics now comprise the majority at the school. According to the Illinois Report Card from the 2019-2020 school year, about 59% of District 209 students are Latino, 36% are Black and 2% are white.

That is also why Supt. James Henderson made getting a required Black history course into the high school curriculum a top priority when he became the D209 superintendent about two years ago. To that end he assembled a group including professionals, community leaders, ministers from PTMAN, and people like Barbara Cole, founder of the Maywood Youth Mentoring Program.

After exploring options the group recommended adoption of a program called BH365.

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and in a former life taught social studies for three years.

In my judgment, the Black history course with its textbook BH365 is a good one. I sat in a classroom where the course was being taught and the students were engaged.

I am a member of a minority cohort, the disability community, which comprises 12.7% of this country’s population under 65. If you include old codgers like me, you’re talking about one in four.

I’ll bet a hundred dollars that you didn’t know who

Justin Dart was. He’s the equivalent of Dr. King in the disability rights movement. Talk about a victimized minority.

Talk about an under-told story.

When you talk about a victimized group, it’s easy to get into a “one-downsmanship” exchange. Who was treated worse? Blacks, people with disabilities, women, Native Americans, LGBTQ+, Italians, Irish, Jews all experienced discrimination. Some assimilated because they were considered white. Although I’m white, my blue walker and slurred speech make it impossible for me to “pass” as being “normal.”

What I’m advocating is not pity from anyone, and I’m not pushing for separate courses on all of the above. I don’t mind the course Black History course as a temporary affirmative action tactic. I took a Negro History course at Tuskegee Institute in 1968 and found it helpful.

But my goal is integration. I suppose you can argue that integration is impossible until equity is achieved, but I don’t want to wait that long.

I think Dr. Nicole Howard and the other D209 administrators who had already integrated Black history and culture in the district’s American History and English literature classes were pursuing a better way forward.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was never pictured in a wheelchair. Seventy years later, we have no problem watching Tammy Duckworth wheel around the capitol.

“Implementing a full course,” wrote Bishop Saffo to Dr. Howard, “would cast a light on our [Black] experience in this nation and explain the complexities of how we survived and made great strides against all odds. Moreover, we and all students would benefit from the lessons that would emerge from our history.

Ours is an American story of triumph over tragedy.”

Amen, Dr. Saffo, and so would courses on persons with disabilities, women, Natives, and LGBTQ, in addition to all the STEM courses, competence in which is necessary for scoring above average on achievement exams.

I for one don’t want the spotlight shining on me.

What I want is to be part of the group picture.

The Chamber of Commerce here lets me lead the prayer at the monthly luncheon even though they have to work a little harder to understand my slurred speech. They encourage me to do it, not because I’m special but simply because I’m part of the team.

Looking ahead to vacation, I decided to look back as well, to my vacation column from July 2013: y essay is titled, “What I Did on My Summer Vacation.” On my summer vacation, my family took me to a cottage in Union Pier, Michigan. On our way to the cottage, I wouldn’t stop asking, “When are we going to get there?” even though I was driving. I couldn’t wait to play with my toys, especially my 5-iron. I also wanted some sand toys but they wouldn’t buy them for me. My grandson promised to share his shovel and bucket with me.

When we got to our small cottage, it was crowded. We had 10-15 big people staying there. My wife and I were forced to share a skinny bed. No wonder I had nightmares that I was falling. My dreams scared me so much I got up early to make coffee. When I was banging around in the kitchen, I woke up the people sleeping in the living room and they got mad at me.

beach. When I got there, people were staring at me. I think it was because I wore my shirt, baseball cap and socks when I went swimming. I wasn’t taking any chances with getting sunburn. It was so hot out, I wanted Lake Michigan to be cold. But the water was warm, especially where the little kids were swimming.

I got scared being at the beach by myself. I was worried the big people wouldn’t get there in time with the cooler of beer. They finally came and brought me a bucket for building sand castles. I was making these really cool towers but my grandson kept knocking them down. When I started fighting him for the shovel, they gave me a time-out.

After I was done swimming, I went to the golf course. I used my sand club so much, it was just like playing at the beach.

Afterward, I drove back to the cottage to cool off. They had used the last beer to boil bratwurst, so I went to the local store to buy more. There were real-life pirates behind the counter charging scary prices.

the big people only liked playing games for real money. One night, I finally got my way and picked Battleship. I was having fun until I picked up a card that made me go directly to Boardwalk and stay in an expensive hotel. I got so mad the big people made me go to bed without a bottle.

The next morning, they made me eat a bratwurst omelet. I yelled that I wanted Lucky Charms and they warned me, “One more tantrum and we’re taking you to the Amtrak station.” I didn’t want to leave the cottage, the beach and especially the cooler. So I ate all their yucky food. They put onions on everything but my pancakes.

The last day, I was really sad. I liked looking at the trees around our cottage, instead of telephone wires. I had a swing set and a sandbox to play in during the day. At night, they even let me play with fire. When it was time to leave, I refused to get into the car.

Then they told me we were going to a magical place where the air always smells like candy: a town where there was no bedtime and I could play until 2 a.m. They promised to take me to a playground on Madison Street. It not only had beer, it had a choo choo that brought out my food!

Lazy Lion Pancake House Hundreds of people came out to the Lazy Lion Pancake House opening on June 28, 1965. The A-frame building at 8300 Roosevelt Road along the Des Plaines River was a popular breakfast and lunch spot for nearly 20 years.

In the mid-1980s it was converted and renovated for Riveredge Hospital outpatient care and later became a senior center called River Park Center. Tucked behind the building are 24 apartment units that were also built in the mid-1960s. In 1986, volunteers filled sandbags to prevent the Des Plaines from reaching the building.
