As the Trump Administration continues to ramp up arrests and deportation of undocumented immigrants across the nation, two local state lawmakers have advanced a proposal aimed at creating safe zones for them in public spaces.

Illinois Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) and Rep. Chris Welch (D-Westchester), who represents parts of River Forest, Forest Park and Maywood, recently received legislative approval for their “Safe Zones Act” and now await approval from Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The proposed bill would direct the state attorney general’s office to establish guidelines for how state law enforcement agents can assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in See IMMIGRATION on page 6

Rocky Mountain high, the natural way

t pays to have friends in high places, 11,440 feet to be exact. Generous people let us stay at their time share in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

It was appropriate that my wife and I celebrated our 38th anniversary there, because we honeymooned in Colorado and hadn’t seen a mountain since.

When we arrived at the resort, the valet parked our car and carried our luggage. I didn’t realize I was about to be pampered more than a newborn.

The accommodations were lavish. Instead of a coffee maker with packets of regular and decaf, there were urns filled with hot beverages 24/7. Our room was cleaned twice a day and they left enough chocolates to cause serious weight gain.

The view from the room was breathtaking. Gazing at snow-capped peaks never gets old. Colorado has the fourth-largest supply of gravity in the U.S. and they use it well, for skiing, biking and whitewater rafting.

Illinois, by contrast, has the second lowest supply and can barely provide a bunny hill.

It was off-season for skiing, of course, but there were gondolas to take us to even greater heights. At the top, we found down-

hill coasters and slides, zip-lines and bike trails. Colorado is one of the few places where you can have a snowball fight in June.

There was also an ice-skating rink in the center of town. We had packed two “in-case-weneed-them” sweatshirts but they became a staple of our daily wardrobe. Not that the resort lacked swimming pools and hot tubs. While we reclined by the pool, attendants fetched us food and drinks.

I was very careful about consuming alcohol, because I heard it has much greater effect at high altitudes. Fortunately, they have a local brew that is safe. It begins with a “C” and the bartender assured me it had almost the same alcohol content as water.

Beers were pricey, though, like everything else. Pretending you’re rich is expensive. We ordered $20 omelets and tried to hide our shock when the check came. Beaver Creek also charged a lot for activities.

Two-hundred dollars could get you a ride on a zip-line or a round of golf.

We opted for cheaper excursions, like going to a rodeo. To coin a phrase, it was my first rodeo. First, the bucking broncos

charged out, coming close to trampling their riders. Then girls as young as 11 galloped around barrels on their mounts.

It was mind-boggling, though, to see 3 year olds attempting to ride sheep. The sheep won. Finally, the bull riders crashed around. Their work day was only 4 seconds long, but literally death-defying.

We also saw wild animals, like the deer that visited in the afternoon. We even had the privilege of seeing a brown bear in its natural habitat – the parking garage in downtown Beaver Creek. He was last seen making a bear-line for the garbage containers.

There was so much excitement and beauty, but what really struck me were the people. Everyone was in a good mood. The workers were cheerful, without a trace of phoniness. Apparently living so close to the sun produces a sunny disposition.

We especially found this in Breckenridge, where the people were more down-to-earth, for being so high up. The main streets were crammed with shops and restaurants, and I didn’t see a single storefront for rent.

There was one business, though, I failed to find. I was expecting Colorado to have plenty of pot dispensaries and wide-scale weed use.

We didn’t catch a whiff of weed the whole time we were there. I guess that’s reserved for low-gravity states, where it’s still illegal.

Housing Forward moves back home Nonprofit reopens its Maywood HQ after fire, flood forced move

Housing Forward recently reopened its Maywood headquarters roughly a year after a fire and flooding forced the organization to move its central staff to other facilities and temporarily close its support center. The nonprofit provides assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness across the western suburbs, and opened its first shelter site at First United Church of Christ in Forest Park in 1992.

During a June 21 open house, Housing Forward officials took visitors on tours of its reopened headquarters, where the nonprofit’s clients can once again eat, shower, wash clothes, use computers and check mail, among other functions, in the first-floor support center.

“The stress that the move put on our staff was nothing compared to the stress it put on our clients, who lost regular showers and

regular laundry services,” said Amanda Rochon, the development manager of special events for Housing Forward, who served as one of the tour guides.

“We worked with a lot of partner organizations to fill some of those gaps, but people who were used to coming here had to go to other places to get vouchers for laundry and things like that,” she said. “We’re definitely excited and happy to be back.”

On Sept. 9, 2017, a fire broke out in the attic of the nonprofit’s Maywood headquarters, destroying a lot of the organization’s inventory of donated items, including 32,000 recyclable compostable paper plates. Three months later, on New Year’s Eve, a pipe burst, which forced the nonprofit the temporarily vacate the building entirely.

In addition to relocating office space on the second and third floors, and applying fresh coats of paint on the walls throughout the building, the nonprofit installed a new entrance for people utilizing the support center.

“We now have a separate entrance for clients than we do for other people, such as staff, who aren’t using the support center,” said Rochon. “We built out a space for a reception area. That way our support staff can focus on the people who need their services.”

Janet Gow, Housing Forward’s director of development and communications, said the move back into the Maywood facility started around two weeks ago and was a community effort.

The drapes that hung in one room were dry-cleaned at no charge, Turano Baking Company in Berwyn donated food for the reopening, and a student from Oak Park and River Forest High School spent hours carrying boxes up and down stairwells, among many other unheralded acts of charity.

“It’s really amazing that the community knows what we’ve been through and given us discounts and done things at no charge,” Gow said.

Share your thoughts on the proposed Cultural Park Save the dates: June 30, July 25, August 4 and August 8

Forest Park residents who want to share their opinions regarding a proposal to create a cultural park in the village should circle Saturday June 30 on their calendars, when Mike Mencarini of the National Park Service will hold the first of four community outreach events open to the public.

The June 30 outreach session will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison Street.

The park district also will be the location for a similar outreach session from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday August 4. Two other outreach sessions will be held at the Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson Boulevard, from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday July 25 and from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 8.

The public sessions are the second of two phases Mencarini is conducting to gauge support for a proposal to create a cultural park on village-owned property near the Altenheim Retirement Home at Madison and Van Buren streets.

He said previously that he plans to have a table with several maps and photos of the current site as well as two posters at each outreach session. One poster will list common park/ recreation amenities where people can indicate if they favor

that amenity being incorporated into the proposal or not.

On the other poster, people can write down comments they have for opportunities/concerns related to the proposal.

The first phase of the outreach involved meeting with stakeholder groups in the village.

The Park Service in October awarded the village a technical assistance grant from the agency’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) branch to help officials create the cultural park for year-round use. The RTCA grant is not a monetary grant. Instead, the park service is providing technical assistance during the federal fiscal year to village officials as they move forward. The federal fiscal year began in October and will end in September.

Mencarini said the first phase, which concluded in April, involved meetings with “approximately 13 community groups or local government offices” to discuss the proposal and ask if they had any initial feedback related to the opportunities available at the site or any concerns they might have.

He said previously that his focus would be on the outdoor recreation and park/green space opportunities that are associated with the cultural park proposal, noting that proposals discussed previously have included a music venue.

Mayor Anthony Calderone said he is “excited and look-

ing forward to learning what the community feedback is” regarding the public outreach sessions.

“Mike Mencarini has been a pleasure to work with in his professional and organized approach to gaining community input on a very important topic,” he added.

Mencarini reiterated that his goal is to present an overview of the outreach and community feedback in September, which is the end of the park service’s fiscal year.

The village purchased the property for $3.6 million in 2001, averting a sale to a private developer whose plans were to build townhomes. The property consists of 11 acres north and south of Altenheim and includes a chapel and other outbuildings, all of which are empty. At one point the West Cook YMCA in Oak Park targeted the site for a new facility but negotiations fell through. Fenwick Hugh School in Oak Park also inquired about purchasing the property for a football field and other athletic fields.

Forest Park resident Ralph DiFebo has spearheaded the effort to create a cultural park on the site, making presentations to groups around the village in 2015 and 2016, concluding with a presentation to the village council in August 2016.

In December 2016, the village council created an ad hoc committee that presented a formal proposal in September 2017.

Non-union village employees see salary increase Pay increases 1.5 percent, retroactive to May 1, the beginning of the village’s fiscal year

The Forest Park Village Council voted June 25 to give nonunion village employees a 1.5 percent salary increases for fiscal year 2019.

The increase, which affects part-time and full-time employees, will be retroactive to May 1, the beginning of the fiscal year.

Village Administrator Tim Gillian said the increases are similar to those approved in previous years and in line with what employees under union contracts are receiving. He was unable to provide an exact number of employees affected due to the fluctuating number of part-time employees.

The village council approved contracts in May with Automobile Mechanics Local 701, representing the village’s one mechanic, and Forest Park Firefighters Local 2753, representing the firefighters. The auto mechanics union contract runs for three years and the firefighters union contract extends

four years.

Police officers and office staff are working without contracts. Contracts with Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 211, which represents the police officers, and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3026, which represents office staff, expired on April 30, but police officers and office staff are working under terms of the expired contracts while negotiations continue, as has been done in the past.

The village’s contract with Teamsters Local 705, which represents public works employees, does not expire until April 30, 2020.

The village provides annual salary increases to nonunion employees at the beginning of each fiscal year but the amount of the increases is not usually determined until after the fiscal year begins. Salary increases for fiscal year 2017 were approved in June 2016 but increases for fiscal year 2018 were not approved until January 2018.

Proviso East grad selected 32nd pick in NBA draft Jevon Carter for play on the Memphis Grizzlies

A Proviso East High School graduate has been picked in the NBA Draft, held June 21.

Jevon Carter, who served as a star guard at Proviso East before going on to West Virginia University, was selected 32nd by the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round of the NBA Draft.

According to the Bleacher Report, after “establishing himself as one of college basketball’s top defenders through three years at West Virginia, Carter improved his offense this past season to get on the NBA map.

“He followed a strong senior year by impressing at the combine and solidifying himself as a legitimate pro prospect who can help at both ends of the floor.”

Firefighters raise $4K in charity run For the first time ever, a woman crosses the finish line first

At 20 minutes and 19 seconds, Melissa Connelly made history at the fourth Forest Park Firefighters’ 5K and Block Party on June 23 as the first woman to win the race. Connelly, 34, the wife of a Berwyn firefighter, beat out some 200 other runners who participated in the 3.1 mile race.

“I was super-excited about it when it happened,” said Lindsey Hankus, race organizer. “I think every fire department wants to give back in some way and be involved, and with this one it’s something that other fire departments can come and participate in and the community can come and participate in.”

Through donations and race sign-ups, Hankus estimated the annual run raised about $4,000, which the fire department plans to donate to the American Cancer Society; the 100 Chicago Club, which provides support to families of first responders who have fallen in the line of duty; as well as local charities like the food pantry at the Howard Mohr Community Center, the All-School Picnic, the mayor’s annual toy drive and more. Along with running, attendees munched on tacos, sipped beer and listened to music by Midnight, a regular band at Groovin’ on the Grove.

Once the race started, everything seemed to run smoothly, Hankus said, but the week before, everything that could go wrong, did. The company that was supposed to deliver branded cups and koozies delivered them to a house in California, rather than the Forest Park Fire Department. The

department had to rush-order the items. On the day packet pickup started, Hankus’ car had a flat on her way to help people sign up. The day of the race, Hankus surveyed the course and found a huge section was underwater, thanks to heavy rainfall from the week before. Hankus ran back to The Grove, set up an internet connection and remapped the course. She said the village helped by quickly clearing that part of the course.

Finally things started to fall in line. Volunteers from the police department arrived to help with logistics, checking race identification and shutting down traffic for a portion of the street. Firefighters — nearly all of them donating their time — manned the track.

Aramark’s $1.3 million bid was the secondlowest, but it was rejected by the district because it didn’t meet an important criteria in the bid document, which allowed district officials to reject the bid of a company that “has previously failed to perform properly” within the district.

Officials said that, although Sodexo was not the lowest bidder, it was “most responsive” and that it met all the criteria in the bid document. The district entered a 1-year contract with the company, which starts Aug. 1, with an option to renew each year for the next four years through fiscal year 2023.

“Sodexo has committed to support our schools in its quest to continuously increase made-from-scratch food preparation and provide healthy and freshly prepared meals on a daily basis,” district officials stated in a June memo.

The board’s vote ended a long stretch of anger and frustration with Aramark that had been building within the district since at least 2016. By late 2017, only 63 percent of students participated in the free breakfast and lunch programs at the schools.

Emotions came to a boil during a regular meeting in November 2017 when students presented school board members with a packet of photos showing bad food, including moldy pizza.

In October 2017, district officials blasted Aramark after receiving complaints

about spoiled milk, which company representatives acknowledged, explaining that the milk may have gone bad while it was being delivered to district schools in a truck whose cooling mechanism was not set at the proper temperatures.

The district went out to bid for food service management companies in March of this year, with the board resolving to find another vendor by June.

During the June 12 meeting before the board held a vote, two Aramark officials pleaded their case to board members, arguing that their service had improved significantly in the last year and that Sodexo’s bid was much more expensive.

Langston Hughes, Aramark’s director of business development, said that it had increased participation in its overall meal program by 14 percent while breakfast participation had increased by 6 percent.

Hughes added that the program also installed a new management team that resulted in healthier meals and a broader range of food options for students and employees.

“Some of our most vocal critics are now some of our strongest advocates,” said Hughes, referring in particular to Proviso East Principal Patrick Hardy, who praised one of those newly installed management employees, Joe Brown, Aramark’s food services director, for his work improving food service quality.

At the June meeting, Brown said that Aramark had invested more than $40,000 in signage and marketing materials to promote a food program that he helped overhaul. By the end of Aramark’s 1-year contract, Brown said, he had implemented a hot breakfast program at all three schools; met with faculty, staff and administrators

Hardy, who has been one of Aramark’s most vocal critics within the district, said that he had “very positive things to say about Joe Brown and his work,” adding that “the work of individuals should be recognized.”

But Hardy also insisted that he would “prefer not to be used as a reference for the company.”

Sodexo, which operates in school districts across the country, isn’t without controversy of its own. In 2010, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report, the company settled a $20 million lawsuit with the New York attorney general for “overbilling 21 school districts and the state university system.”

Five years earlier, Sodexo “paid $80 million to settle a class action lawsuit brought by thousands of AfricanAmerican employees who were routinely denied promotions. At the time, it was one of the largest race-related, job-bias settlements in history.”

And recently, the company has been inundated by widely publicized complaints at Chicago Public Schools, where principals “now routinely report unsanitary bathroom conditions, lack of cleaning supplies, overflowing garbage cans, rodent and insect infestations — all under Sodexo and Aramark’s management,” according to the June 5 article in the Chicago Sun-Times.

parent” or “being taken away from a child at the hospital because they’ve been hurt or at a school because they chose to attend a play or a parent-teacher conference.”

“That’s not American. We don’t ask people for their papers. We don’t rip families apart,” he said.

Rep. Chris Welch said that along with the Trust Act, Illinois is leading the nation in sending a signal to immigrants that they are welcomed here.

“Kids should be at their desks learning, not worrying about ICE agents,” he said in a telephone interview.

Welch said his office has never received so many calls as in the days following the election of President Donald Trump. He received reports that children were crying in schools at Proviso West in Hillside and Proviso East in Maywood, over fear that their parents would be deported.

“I remember that day like it was yesterday,” Welch said. “Those phone calls were horrific and it was purely based on fear.”

Oak Parker Mony Ruiz-Velasco, executive director of the immigrant rights group PASO, which helped convince Oak Park and Forest Park to approve a sanctuary city ordinance in 2017, said in a telephone interview that her organization has recently been working with undocumented immigrants detained by ICE agents in Berwyn, Cicero, Lyons, Stone Park and elsewhere.

Her group has lobbied Springfield for both the Trust Act and the Safe Zones Act. She noted that ICE and the Department of Homeland Security “has more funding than all other (federal) law-enforcement agencies combined” and operates without “accountability (or) transparency”.

Action must be taken at the state level to protect undocumented immigrants because “Congress has not positioned itself to really address these issues,” she said.

A Forest Park Fourth of July If you’re looking to celebrate the Fourth of July the Forest Park way, the Park District of Forest Park is throwing a party that ends with old-fashioned fireworks.

Larry Piekarz, director of the park district, said he expects about 2,000 locals to attend the party, which he said costs about $25,000 to put on. The majority of the money — $20,000—is spent on the fireworks, he said. The village of Forest Park and the local fire and police departments help work the event.

“It’s going to be a great show,” Piekarz said.

The pool at 7501 Harrison St. is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for those wanting to take a dip. The food and beer tents open at 4 p.m., operated by the Kiwanis Club of Forest Park.

Music also starts at 4 p.m., and local superstars The Redmonds will take the stage at 6:30 p.m.

“We’re especially happy that The Redmonds are playing because they’re Forest Park’s own band,” Piekarz said.

“They’re very popular, they do a great job. We’re trying to keep it a local event, not a regional event.”

The one exception is from 5 to 8 p.m. when face painting will be offered by Ginger Gypsy, an Indiana-based artist who is known for transforming average children into princesses, pirates and more. Kids can also enjoy an egg toss, art projects and a magician.

Then stake out your spot for the 9 p.m. fireworks show, which lasts around 25 minutes.

“It might be my last year of actually working it,” said Piekarz, who is stepping down from his post in October after 29 years with the park district. “But it doesn’t mean that’s my last year coming to it. I’m looking forward to years of watching other people run around working.”

Bliss Fashion Lounge says see you later Owner looks for smaller space, transitions to private appointments

Bliss Fashion Lounge is resizing its business and leaving Forest Park after more than three years on Madison Street.

“People want more of my service and not my store,” said Carmen Rivera, owner and head curvologist at 7439 Madison St. In addition to providing a bra fitting and shapewear styling service, Bliss also sells lingerie, vintage fur and jewelry and sexual enhancement items.

“It makes me sad,” Rivera said, “but I know there’s bigger things on the horizon for me. I know if I keep providing a service that people want, it will still grow. It’s just changing, and change is good.”

Rivera, who is an employee of the Forest Park Review’s parent company, opened Bliss in August 2015, after studying retail by selling vintage furs and purses at the Forest Park Emporium. She was looking to transition into a new niche and had always dreamed of helping women the way salesgirls at the now-shuttered Marshall Field’s department store fitted her as a girl.

“With the Field’s service I remember that old lady with the tape measure around her neck, and the way she carefully made me comfortable and helped my mom and me find that I needed a certain size bra or whatever. She didn’t make me feel weird,” Rivera said.

She opened Bliss on the premise that no area retailer provided expert bra fitting and shapewear styling, and aimed to offer comfortable, beautiful products for women of all

sizes. Rivera soon made friends with the other retailers on the street, like Scott from Hallmark who would always wash her windows, or the boys at Vapors by iTEO next door, who acted as her unofficial security guards.

But by the time her third holiday season approached, Rivera had gained a better understanding of her high and low sales seasons, with prom, weddings and new school years serving as her prime time, and the winter holidays representing a slow period.

“Once that girl gets that ring over the Christmas holiday, that’s when I start pushing, around Valentine’s Day,” Rivera said. “People aren’t shopping for their gowns for Christmas, so they’re not shopping for things to make their silhouette look better.”

Rivera realized she didn’t need to stay open seven days a week, and began only opening the store by appointment and on the weekends. Her appointment service boomed — Rivera connected with dressmakers to become their exclusive sizer, she travelled to women’s homes to expertly fit and empower those coming out of divorces and helped brides get fitted for their big day. A few months ago, when she met with her management company about renewing her lease, she told them she didn’t need such a large store.

She cleaned out the shop on June 24 and plans to be out by the end of the month. She will transition to private and digital appointments for the time being, while she looks for a new, smaller office in the area. Politics, positivity pump up 2018 Pride Parade Forest Park holds its own “Family Pride Day” on Madison Street, June 30

Amid the glitter and rainbows that are the signature of past Pride Parades, a political undercurrent buzzed among those marching in the 49th Pride Parade in Chicago this year, said Kate Webster, who served as the parade monitor for Rush University Medical Center and helped recruit more than 100 volunteers to march with, and ride on, the Rush float.

“We’ve got a conservative political system right now, and gay people are much more visible, and trans people are coming out,” said Webster. “I just felt like it was a beautiful party, and it was celebratory, and it was political.”

Signs reading, “I’m A Trans Kid, Free Hugs,” “Stop Islamaphobia,” and “All Families Matter,” were among those that adorned the sidelines and floats of the annual parade, said Webster, who serves as director of student diversity and multicultural affairs at Rush.

A trans woman also marched with the Rush team, and Webster said they received a lot of love.

“It was amazing actually being in the pa-

rade itself; it didn’t feel crazy, it felt very celebratory, very positive,” she said. “A friend of mine asked me if it was just people who had nothing else to do, or were ogling, and it felt like more people were LGBT or very strong allies.”

As chair of the Forest Park Diversity Commission, Webster said she plans to organize a formal Pride Parade in Forest Park in June next year.

This year, on June 30, there will be a “Forest Park Family Pride Day” along Madison Street, featuring LGBTQ family-friendly activities. Some businesses will donate a percentage of their sales to benefit the nonprofit Illinois Safe School Alliance, which promotes safety and support for students who identify as LGBTQ in the state. The effort was organized by Jessica Combe Luciano, founder of Creativita, 7512 Madison St. “On the business side, having a sticker or placard saying, ‘I’m An Ally’ or ‘LGBT Ally’ or something, just so there’s an awareness,” Webster said in reply to how Forest Park could be better allies of those who identify as LGBTQ. “When I walk in with my wife, we will more likely spend money in those businesses that are supportive.”

Between 7:30 p.m. on June 7 and 5:30 p.m. on June 18, someone broke into a garage on the 400 block of Marengo and stole a white and blue Giant brand bicycle.

McAdam Landscaping and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment. Someone pried the door open of one trailer at 2001 Desplaines, stealing two blowers valued at $1,000 total; two string trimmers valued at $600 total; a pole trimmer valued at $300; and a hedge trimmer valued at $250. They cut the hatch of another trailer, stealing a blower valued at $500 and a string trimmer valued at $300. The rear door of a trailer was also lowered, and there were pry marks on the door of another trailer.

Thief lifts breaks into condo

Man tries to break into cars

Between 12:30 p.m., June 22 and 2:45 a.m., June 25, someone broke into a condo on the 500 block of Grove and stole an HP laptop, 10 bottles of wine, $20 worth of change and a green and tan baseball. The man told police the wedge he used to close his back door was missing.

Police responded to a call of a man trying to break into a vehicle about 2:33 a.m. at the 800 block of Marengo on June 24.

A man told police he saw a man trying to open the doors of two cars parked behind his home, and yelled for him to stop. The man ran, but police caught him at the Harlem and Elgin alley. Officers asked him what he was doing, and he replied, “I was just going for a walk and stopped to take a piss.” He was charged with two counts of tampering with vehicle/anti-theft.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, June 17-25, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Wino conceals 36 bottles at Living Fresh Market After stealing three dozen mini-bottles of wine from Living Fresh Market, 7520 Roosevelt Road, the day before, a man pushed a store employee who tried to stop him from taking more.

Between 4 and 5 p.m., a Forest Park man entered the store three times on June 21, according to a police report. The third time he entered, an employee watched him stick multiple, 187 millileter bottles of wine down his pants, in his socks, and he even drank one.

He was stopped as he tried to exit the store, and employees recovered 36 bottles. He was charged with retail theft, and told if he tried to enter the store again he would be arrested.

The next day, he returned to Living Fresh about 3:58 p.m., according to the police report. An employee watched him put four mini-bottles of wine down his pants and in his socks, and tried to stop him when he exited the store. The man shoved the employee in the chest, causing him to fall to his knees. The employee got up and was able to retrieve the bottles. The man was charged with battery.

Police responded to a call about 12:47 a.m. at Doc Ryan’s on June 22 to remove an un-

wanted person. When they arrived, a bar employee told officers the man was now sleeping under a car in the parking lot at 400 Thomas.

Police report he walked unsteadily and almost fell to the ground several times. The man sat down, passed out, woke up, and started yelling at officers, clenching his fists and lunging at police. Two officers restrained him, and he reportedly yelled, “I don’t care if I go to jail.” Police charged him with reckless conduct.

Battery on the Blue Line Police arrived about 1 a.m. to the Forest Park Blue Line station, 711 Desplaines, on June 24 after receiving a call about a fight.

Officers found a man lying near the bike racks with missing teeth, a 1.5-inch cut on his chin, swollen eye and lip, and a gash on the back of his head. He was transported to Loyola Medical Center for treatment.

His assailant reportedly told police the man started harassing him as soon as he got out of the train, and that he punched the man in the face several times to defend himself. Police charged the assailant with aggravated battery.

Proviso East golf team receives surprise $60K donation Golf rival fundraiser a hit

The Proviso East High School golf team recently received $60,000 from an unlikely source—their rival in the Mid Suburban League West Conference.

Hinsdale Central High School officials organized a fundraiser for the Proviso East program on June 2 at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in northwest Kildeer, which drew more than 100 people and generated $60,000 in donated equipment and other resources.

“We’re so appreciative,” Gerald Holmes, who graduated from Proviso East in 2001 and is now head golf coach at the school, told the Daily Herald. “It just goes to show you that the game of golf can bring out the best in people.”

The unlikely fundraiser was inspired by tragedy. After Jimmy Horan, the late assistant golf coach at Hinsdale Central, died in a car crash in March last year, Holmes sent the family a card with a small donation and photo of the Proviso East team. When brother Terry Horan opened the card, he said he felt moved.

“As I looked at the Proviso East team photo, it hit me that all of the golfers were in gym shoes,” Terry Horan told the Daily Herald in May. “I figured this must be an under-resourced program, and wouldn’t it be great to take this team under our wing as a

family,” he said. “We could outfit them with everything they could ever hope for to compete and win in the future.”

So, he organized the golf outing, titled the “The Jimmy” in honor of his late brother, where attendees donated everything from new golf shoes to uniforms to clubs. Proviso East golfers also received five spots in Nike’s coveted summer golf camp thanks to the fundraiser.

“This is amazing,” said Jonathan Vega, a Proviso East sophomore and golf team member, in a school statement released June 14. “As we play we will always remember your generosity and the Horan family for doing this for us.”

Maria Pinela, a sophomore on the Proviso East golf team, said the Horan family “are different type of people” who “saw an opportunity to help the people who love this sport, and not only did they improve our golf skills as well, they showed us that one act of kindness can turn into a lifechanging event.”

“We are so moved by the legacy of Jimmy,” said D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez. “[District 209] is inspired by the fact that the Horan family has continued with the legacy of service by organizing this event for Proviso East.”

Get to know your guards A year after Proviso East introduced its lifeguard program, kids reflect on saves and how their life has changed

Joshua Farley felt inspired to become a lifeguard because of the easy-going characters on “SpongeBob SquarePants,” a favorite TV show of his. But a year after becoming certified through Proviso East High School’s program and spending a summer policing the pool at West Cook YMCA in Oak Park, Farley, 17, has found that lifeguarding isn’t as chill as he expected.

“I thought it would be fun, just sitting in the sun, chilling.

I would imagine in the movies how they just sit down with their sunglasses on and just play that song, ‘In the summertime, in the summertime,’” Farley said. “But sometimes it can be really stressful.”

Farley is part of the first class of lifeguards to graduate from the Proviso East High School lifeguard training program, in partnership with the West Cook YMCA in Oak Park, which provides training and job opportunities.

All students who graduate from the program – and there have been 21 so far – receive jobs at the West Cook YMCA, Fred Hampton Aquatic Center in Maywood and other facilities. This coming school year, Tracy McCormick, department chair of physical education, said she expects about 30 students to apply for certification.

“Statistically African-American and Hispanic students cannot swim,” McCormick said. “But it’s a really important skill to have. It’s a safety concern.”

Students spend one hour for 10 weeks training daily at the Proviso East pool, diving into 10 feet of water to retrieve bricks, swimming laps, learning CPR and much more. In

addition to toning up his swimming skills, Farley learned that dunking people and doing backflips – while fun – is not safe.

But he said he learned about the real dangers of the water while lifeguarding at the Proviso East pool.

Early in his lifeguard career, Farley remembers a high school freshman treading in the deep end of the pool, when suddenly he started to swallow water. Farley didn’t think twice. He said he immediately jumped in and rescued the boy.

“He turned out to be on the same volleyball team as me,” Farley added.

While he was training, Kendall Friend said he always thought he’d feel nervous about making his first save. But when he saw an older friend from school struggling in the Triton College pool, he immediately jumped in.

“It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be,” said Friend, 17.

When he was younger, Friend said he taught himself to swim, and has since loved swimming and looked up to lifeguards. When he heard about the opportunity to become a lifeguard at school, he jumped at the chance, thinking it would be a big achievement.

Now that Friend is certified, he’s said he’s taught his little cousins, younger sister and others to swim.

“They see me as a leader [and] they help me build more confidence by teaching them how to swim,” he said.

Growing up, she said her dad almost drowned when he was swimming. After that, Medina said her mom was always very anxious about allowing her children to swim in the deep end of the pool. But Medina always loved swimming.

She said she became a lifeguard to protect her family and help her mom relax about letting her and her sisters swim in deep water. Now she’s gearing up for her first summer guarding the pool at the West Cook YMCA. She said she’s excited, but nervous about what the warm weather will bring.

“When we’re young we believe that we have the whole world in our palm, and sometimes it’s that way,” said Medina, 16. “But we’re still teenagers, we’re still adolescents, when we’re inexperienced about life, we still don’t know the consequences. The first thing that we believe is that the water’s against us, but we need to be the water.”

Athletes from Proviso East High School stole the show at the fourth annual Night of Champions on June 20.

Night of Champions honors the achievements of elite high school teams, athletes and coaches from Proviso East, Oak Park and River Forest (OPRF), Fenwick, Riverside-Brookfield, Lyons Township and Nazareth Academy. Approximately 400 guests packed the Dominican University auditorium, receiving awards ranging from Most Inspirational to Coach of the Year, and listening to banter from Emery Lehman, a two-time Olympic speed skater and OPRF alumnus.

Proviso East’s track and field star Moses Biosah won Male Athlete of the Year, and Janet Buenrostro won Female Athlete of the Year for her tennis game. The Pirates’ tradition-rich boys and girls basketball teams came away big winners as well, winning Female and Male Teams of the Year, respectively.

Biosah, a Forest Park resident by way of Nigeria, finished first in three races at the Pirates Midwest Classic and captured two more races at the Proviso East Sectional, among many other accolades all season. He also finished fifth in the 400-meter dash at the state track meet.

“I absolutely loved it,” Biosah said about Night of Champions. “It was a great experience. I’m honored they thought about me.

I also loved the part about coaches getting recognition.”

As a freshman, Buenrostro won 16 of 19 matches and became the first female to qualify for the state tournament in school history.

“I really enjoy tennis and the plan is to play until I can’t,” Buenrosto told the Forest Park Review in October 2017.

Hammond said damaged areas have been patched at least twice a year for the last four years.

At the start of this year, staff knew something more permanent had to be done to the roof. They solicited proposals from architects, and decided to work with the Itascabased Williams Architects, which also did work on the Roos Recreation Center. The group liked the proposal from Williams because, rather than replacing the whole roof, Williams suggested doing an infrared survey, which would use an infrared camera to measure solar energy.

During the daytime, wet roof insulation absorbs more solar energy from the sun than dry roof insulation, according to Williams’ study. When the insulation cools at

Library Board members approved restoration of the Forest Park Public Library’s roof during a regular meeting last month, after staff have endured years of leaking.

“It’s been leaking on and off for years, and we just have been patching it as necessary,” said Pilar Shaker, director. “But last summer every single rain resulted in a leak, followed by a patch, followed by a leak, so it seems no use continuing to pay for patches when the roof itself needs to be addressed in a bigger way.”

For the last three years, the roof has been leaking in the same few spots, near the periodicals section that happens not to hit any shelving, and also near the quiet area and the biographies, where the roof ’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units are located. About five years ago, the library replaced its roof HVAC system and had to perforate the roof.

Staff went along with the survey, and found that about 11 percent of the roof is wet. Contractors will remove parts of the roof identified as wet, but also build up portions of the roof to make them more robust.

Shaker said she plans to issue bids in either July or early August, since “we’re in prime building season right now, so we aren’t going to bid it out right now because I don’t think we’re going to get competitive prices,” she said. She hopes to start construction in September, and expects restoration of the roof to take about eight days.

“The funds for it are in reserve, we have capital funds for it,” Shaker said. “So it’s not one of those things where we need to ask people to support the library roof project or something like that.”

‘King’ of The Block’ David King & Associates celebrates 25 years in Oak Park

“Calling to complain about that article you wrote,” the muffled voice, intentionally obscured for comic effect, stated in a recent phone message left at the offices of Wednesday Journal. “I can’t believe you said that stuff in the article. Oh, my god!”

“Timothy! I didn’t disguise my voice well enough. Happy Friday! I just thought I’d say, ‘Hello.’ King on the cell.”

It’s the kind of good-spirited razzing you can expect from one of Oak Park and Forest Park’s most prominent figures – commercial real estate broker David King, a Forest Park resident and founder of the Oak Park-based David King & Associates.

Ever the showman, had King been born 100 years earlier, he might have been a circus ringmaster.

“Happy [pick your day of the week]!” is his signature phrase, and frequently consoles his company with, “It’s all good.”

This month, he and his team are celebrating 25 years in business.

King told the village board he’s never seen a more commercially vibrant Oak Park.

“The last year and a half has been mindboggling,” he told the board about the state of new businesses opening in the village.

“I’m asking you to keep the demand going,” he told the board, which ultimately approved the proposal.

While King is, perhaps, most well-known for his commercial real estate work, he’s also been a tireless advocate for Triton College, where he served 14 years as president of Triton College Foundation.

The college honored him in 2012 for his tireless efforts on the board raising some $3.5 million and awarding 1,200 scholarships, according to a Wednesday Journal story.

“I’ve rarely seen a more optimistic person in my whole life and career,” West Cook Municipal Conference Executive Director Rich Pellegrino said of King. “I’ve never seen him characterize a challenge in an insurmountable way. He’ll just set forth the problems that need to be solved and start analyzing Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb and making solutions.”

Though many in town might not know King personally – he’s the one with the blue-and-white DK signs in storefronts windows throughout Oak Park and Forest Park – the impact of his company’s work can be felt throughout municipalities in the western suburbs.

Some of the more recent businesses he’s placed in the commercial corridors of the area include Oak Park’s Courageous Bakery, Wild Onion Tied House, Saigon Pho and Poke Burrito, and Forest Park’s Takara and Axcan Mexican Grill. And the list goes on and on.

Empty storefronts are a lot less frequent than in the 1980s and ’90s, King said last year, while testifying to the Oak Park Board of Trustees in support of the Albion high-rise

He’s lauded roundly by others in the business community, most recently by Oak Park Mayor Anan AbuTaleb, who called King “an advocate for our community.”

“He’s a big believer in the Oak Park market,” Abu-Taleb said in a telephone interview. “And he has been instrumental in attracting new businesses to set up shop in our town and helping those who have been here for a while to maintain their contribution.”

Viktor Schrader, economic development director for the Oak Park Economic Development Corporation, said in an email that King is relentless in his work.

“While people that have known David longer than I have tell me that he has ‘settled down,’ he still goes a mile a minute, chasing every lead and trying to close every deal,” Schrader said.

Make Cultural Park real We’ve been waiting 17 years, so we can wait another season, summer into fall, for the anticipated report of the community outreach worker from the National Park Service on the ideas locals have for the village-owned property at the Altenheim.

This week will be the first of four opportunities for residents to offer input on the proposed Cultural Park. There’ll be two sessions at The Park and two at the library between now and early August. That will allow time for Mike Mencarini of the park service to gather the input collected from earlier key stakeholder interviews, mesh it with citizen input and then report it out publicly in September.

We should not prejudge the outcome. But our pulse on Forest Park suggests that the idea of Cultural Park blending a music performance space with public space has been well received in town, both in the grassroots and in official circles.

The question then is what happens in September? What’s the plan for next steps? How is money raised? How is governance crafted? How is construction executed?

We know. We are slightly ahead of ourselves. But the village’s visionary purchase of this 11-acre site was in 2001.

Time to build it.

Happy Wednesday, David It was 25 years ago that David King and associates, that would mainly be Debbie King, his sister, set out to lease commercial space in Forest Park and Oak Park. Since then their blue and white DK signs have adorned the windows of storefronts and commercial spaces across these villages, equally signaling dashed hopes and fresh opportunities for a couple of generations of entrepreneurs in our burgs.

King helped lead the resurgence of Madison Street in Forest Park 20 years ago, he has kept faith with the more dramatic ups and downs of the retail economy in Downtown Oak Park, he has worked every other local commercial strip, and expanded his firm’s footprint to Elmhurst and other suburbs. Always he has worked behind the scenes while being something of a showman out front.

Happy anniversary to David and to Debbie.

And may all our empty storefronts be leased.

Our hometown 4th From morning and into the night, the 4th of July is Forest Park’s day to shine. The whole shooting match fireworks show is back and culminates the day at The Park on Harrison Street.

But the fun starts early as the aquatic center opens, builds with food and brewed beverages, live music by The Redmonds, face painting, egg tosses, a magician and more.

It doesn’t get much more American than this.

While the park district takes the lead, village hall, police and fire and lots of nonprofits all make this day happen.

Let’s enjoy.

When to say “no” and when to say “yes”

P

astor Walter Mitty drove up to Manitowoc after church on Fathers Day. His sister-in-law Susan and her sons, Brian and Matt, had invited him.

When he walked in the front door the two boys were wearing Milwaukee Brewers gear and started laughing when their uncle feigned a look of horror. They grilled bratwurst in the backyard and found themselves talking about Herman. Susan had been a widow for two years now, and was able to tell stories about her late husband without choking up very much.

The boys seemed to enjoy hearing and telling the stories, as well. At one point Brian said, “Uncle Walt, do you remember the time we took Dad’s old Grumman canoe out in those humongous waves on Lake Michigan and surfed back to shore?

What a blast!”

“Or the time we went camping at Point Beach,” Matt added, “and that racoon managed to open our cooler on the picnic bench at ate a whole stick of summer sausage.”

As the story telling tapered off, Susan winked at the boys and said, “Let’s show Uncle Walt what we made for him.”

They hustled into the house. Matt carried out a big cake with Happy Fathers Day written in frosting and Brian brought a tub of ice cream.

Pastor Walt turned to Susan and simply said, “Thank you.”

Without saying anything more, everyone understood what was going on. When Herman was diagnosed with cancer four years ago and began needing full-time care, Pastor Walt had negotiated a plan with the Poplar Park Community Church in which he would stay at Herman’s house during the week, drive to Poplar Park on Saturday, preach the sermon on Sunday and then make the three hour drive north after church let out.

The boys always called him “Uncle Walt” in the year and a half between the diagnosis and Herman’s death, but all four of them understood why they were celebrating Fathers Day with their uncle and brother-in-law.

They had all made a choice to make the arrangement work. They had all said “no” to some things and “yes” to others, and Uncle Walt had become much more than a fifth wheel in the family.

A week later, the Saturday Morning Men’s Fellowship Group gathered as usual in the big booth in the back corner of the Main Café.

“I’ve had it with men,” Alice spit out as she stood over them ready to take their orders.

“Good morning to you too,” replied Dominique with a grin.

“No, I’m serious,” Alice continued. “If you take the news seriously, it seems like every man in the universe has sexually abused women at one point or another.”

Asch joined in. “C’mon, Alice. Things are getting better. You heard that they are no longer doing the swimsuit competition at the Miss America Pageant.”

“Yeah, and it didn’t happen until a woman became chairman of the board!”

The men were quiet for a minute after Alice stomped off to deliver their order to the cooks.

Asch broke the silence saying, “I confess that I did enjoy that part of the pageant, but if Dorothy was watching with me I’d pretend to not be interested.”

“Isn’t all of this change happening because of the #MeToo movement,” asked Pastor Walt, hoping to get a discussion going about male identity and responsibility.

“I guess so.” Dominique began cautiously.

“But because I’ve been in the banking industry so long, I’ve seen what ambition can do to people.”

“Say more,” probed Eric Anderson.

“OK.” Dominique took a deep breath. “I’ve seen men lie and betray friends and colleagues to get the inside track for a promotion. I’ve seen women, in the name of feminism, become as ruthless as men.”

“And,” here the African American banker in the Brooks Brothers suit steeled himself to say, “I’ve seen women in the office not say ‘no’ because they wanted to keep their jobs.”

“But aren’t you blaming the victim by saying that?” asked Eric.

“Yeah. I know that it sounds that way, but I think of my mother all the time. She was a cleaning lady until she retired and we could always use more money. But my mother would say ‘no’ every once in awhile to tasks that she decided were beneath her dignity.”

“Kind of like Rosa Parks?” Pastor Walt asked.

“Yes. Very much like Rosa Parks. She refused to step and fetch, and financially I guess our family paid a price. And now, of course, I’m in the opposite situation. I make a lot of money and I have a fair amount of power over other people as I sit in my corner office.”

Which made Asch ask, “But how does that story relate to #MeToo?” “Number one,” Dominique continued, “whenever I’m tempted to abuse the power I have, my mother appears in my memories and chews me out for even thinking those thoughts.

“And second, whenever I hear my nieces complain that life isn’t fair and that the deck is stacked against black folks, I try to show that I understand where they are coming from, but then I almost always tell them stories about my mother.”

“You may be a victim of circumstances,” I tell them, “but no one can take that inner power, that inner dignity away from you unless you let them. As you become adults you are going to be making a lot of choices. And you need to determine ahead of time where you draw the line, at what point you will refuse to go to the back of the bus. It might cost you your job, or a promotion, or the approval of your friends, but what will it profit you if you gain the whole world and lose your soul?”

As Pastor Walt walked home, he realized that Dominique’s sermon was better than the one he was going to give the next day. He also figured out that in making the choice to care for his brother and his family that he had gained a lot more than he had lost.
