Forest Park gets cannabis craft grower, could get dispensary

Three cannabis-related businesses recently received licenses to operate in Forest Park – and, according to Mayor Rory Hoskins, there is another party interested in opening a dispensary.

Karuna Ventures received a cannabis infuser license in 2021, allowing it to extract oil from cannabis plants, put that oil in products such as edibles and electric vapor pens, package the products and distribute them to dispensaries. More recently, Mint IL LLC got a license to open a cannabis cultivation plant at 7550 Industrial Dr. and got a go-ahead to start construction. And Alliance Transport Group will operate a cannabis transportation business out of a warehouse building at 1800 Desplaines Ave. Hoskins said he supports the prospective cannabis businesses, because he believes they will create jobs in Forest Park. He also said there is a dispensary that is applying for a license, and while he didn’t elaborate any further, he said he doesn’t believe it will have any trouble getting village council approval.

Forest Park Senior Citizens Club celebrates 60 years Sandy Byrnes continues as president, cheerleader and ‘Energizer Bunny’

The week of June 2, 1962, the Ray Charles hit, “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” was at the top of the billboard, gas prices hovered around 31 cents, and Ferrara Pan’s Lemonheads made their debut on the candy scene.

Also, the Senior Citizens Club of Forest Park was founded that year and would more than quadruple in size in the coming years. Led by Alfred Dinkel, the first meeting was held for 40 seniors, with a potluck, games and singing at the Park District Administration Building.

The club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a luncheon recently at Fat Duck with catered desserts from Twisted Cookie and Oak Park Bakery. The Senior Citizens Club, currently with 50 members, is a nonprofit group that is self-sustaining and one of the robust programs offered in town for older adults. The club meets at the Mohr Community Center every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Entering her ninth consecutive year as president, Sandy Byrnes has continued to focus on providing a social-recreational club for people over 55. “Tuesdays are sometimes the only time some people are out during the week and gives a chance for people to socialize, craft, play games

and find out what’s happening,” Byrnes explained. The club also provides opportunities for education. “We have had the paramedics come for blood pressure checks, talk to people about the Vial of Life program, and we keep people posted on the local updates, programs and just have friendships.”

On a normal Tuesday, she sets up four tables for Pokeno, a couple of tables for socialization, and a craft table for people to come and spend the morning. “I love bringing surprises to the group; sometimes I craft gifts; sometimes I do a pop-up event. I

love them all and want to make sure everyone is taken care of,” she said. During the pandemic, seniors were unable to meet and really missed the socialization and games on Tuesdays. Byrnes was busy dropping off masks, gift cards, and fun crafts and keeping the local club members connected.

Digging deep into the club’s roots, Byrnes honored the history of the club by presenting some of the early records, calendars, photos, and even shared receipts from 1975 when Schmidt’s Pastry Shop had five dozen sweet rolls for only $12. The Senior Club served coffee and sweets over the decades, and always has been a social club. The annual dues cover the tab for coffee and sweets. With budgets getting tighter, Byrnes noted the club was lucky this past December. “We had donations from the Toys for Tots that Chubs runs, which has really made a difference this year.” As costs have risen, “People were very kind to us, which has helped.”

The Senior Citizen Club is open to new members, with an annual fee of $12, although they will be taking a break, meeting back up in August. Byrnes welcomes her next chapter as president, saying, “I enjoy all the friendships we have made over time and it just makes me happy to

see everyone.” Known as the “Energizer Bunny” for her limitless energy, she was nominated again for another term, which is fine with her. “I just love taking care of them,” she said, and is proud to keep the local Senior Club growing for another year.

Council adopts measures to protect, manage trees Plan calls for more diversity in mapledominated inventory

While Forest Park’s trees are in good shape overall, the Village of Forest Park Urban Forestry Management plan recommends removing eight trees as soon as possible and calls for the village to diversify its tree stock.

The plan, which includes the full inventory of all trees on Forest Park’s public ways, was developed by Great Lakes Urban Forestry Management using funding from the village and a $9,375 Morton Arboretum grant. In response to the plan recommendations, the village council voted unanimously on June 27 to approve several changes to Forest Park tree regulations. Most notably, it set up procedures for replacing trees that get removed and expanded the Forest Park

Recreation Board’s responsibilities to now offer advice on tree preservation and protection.

Under the new regulations, the village must develop regular plans for planting, protecting and removing trees, and sets the standards for where the planted trees can come from, how many trees of each species the village can plant and how it should care for trees. The Department of Public Works will be responsible for maintaining the list of what can and can’t be planted.

It makes protecting large trees a priority, since any trees that would replace them would be smaller and it would take time for them to grow to a similar size. Whenever there is a development that might affect trees on the public right of way, a certified arborist either hired or contracted by the village would evaluate the extent of that impact and what, if anything, can be done to preserve the tree. The public trees can’t be removed without a village permit approved by the arborist.

The new policy sets replacement standards for any trees that do get cut down.

Any trees up to 30 inches in diameter must be replaced with at least two trees of 2.5 inches in diameter, and any tree between 30 to 40 inches in diameter must be replaced by at least three trees at least 2.5 inches in diameter, and any tree wider than that must be replaced by at least four trees of those dimensions. The policy calls for those replacement trees to be planted on site “to the greatest extent possible and where permissible/practicable.”

The policy bans the practice of “tree topping” – removing the top portion of the tree.

Finally, the policy makes the Forest Park Recreation Board responsible for “provide[ing] assistance, direction, and advice to the village regarding the preservation, planting, management, and protection of trees.” One of the grant requirements was that there be a Tree Board to recommend tree-related policies, and village staff argued that it made sense to use an existing advisory body that already serves a similar purpose. The Recreation Board provides oversight over the village-

owned pocket parks – something that it does less of after most pocket parks were leased to the Park District of Forest Park.

The rec board also coordinates local volunteer efforts.

According to the tree inventory, Forest Park trees are largely in good shape. According to the inventory, 2,342 trees, 70% of all village trees, only require regular pruning. And while it recommends removing 196 trees, only eight are in poor enough shape to recommend removal as quickly as possible. That means 113 trees are lower on the removal priority list, and 75 are low priority enough to be removed “as time and budget allows.”

Another 134 trees have dead limbs that should be removed as soon as possible, but the trees themselves are fine.

The inventory singled out 216 trees that are recommended for monitoring on a regular because they have “a significant defect, or show signs of developing issues, or general decline.” Five may have even deeper issues, but the inventory recommends continued on page 6

Forest Park adopts plan for making streets ADA-compliant Administrator credited for outreach to public

A plan to make sidewalks and other Forest Park public rights of way compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act was unanimously approved by the village council June 27.

The plan, which is labeled as a transition, is substantially identical to what the village released for review on Feb. 14. It calls for the village to do an inventory of all the obstacles to accessibility and use that information when planning street repair and improvement projects. It also calls for Forest Park to check any private development proposals to make sure they fit ADA requirements. Many of the improvements would be done as part of regular maintenance, while larger projects will be done based on funding availability.

While the ADA requires all municipali-

ties to develop a Transition Plan for Public Rights of Way, there haven’t been many penalties for not following through on this long-time provision. According to a 2020 study by the Chicago-based Metropolitan Planning Council, in the 30 years since ADA passed in 1990, only 11% of Chicago area municipalities adopted the plan. But the federal government is expected to make passing a plan a requirement for receiving federal funding, which prompted Forest Park to develop one.

Forest Parkers had the opportunity to comment on the plan between mid-February and the end of May, with the village advertising the plans in its weekly online newsletter. Village Administrator Moses Amidei, who also serves as Forest Park’s ADA coordinator, confirmed to the Review that the few changes the plan made were strictly grammatical. But he noted that he shared the earlier draft of the plan with Forest Park’s Progress Center for Independent Living and made some changes based on the feedback he received before releasing the draft the public got to see. And he told the council on June 27 that, in May,

he held an additional meeting with the Progress Center over Zoom to review the amended plan.

The plan introduction notes that Forest Park adheres to ADA when doing road improvement projects – but this means accessibility can vary quite a bit depending on what got repaired or rehabbed in the last 31 years. The plan calls for the village to look at all of its streets and catalogue barriers to accessibility. This can include fire hydrants obstructing the way, lack of street median refuge islands at crossings of major streets, gaps in sidewalks and issues with sidewalk and driveway slopes. The village will then develop a list of priorities.

The plan notes that some of the biggest issues happen on state-owned roads.

Any improvements there would need to be approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The village will incorporate the aforementioned findings into its regular street maintenance plans and 5-year capital plans. It will put particular priority on bringing sidewalk ramps at intersections into compliance. When a private devel-

oper brings their plans to the village, Forest Park will check to see whether the development meet ADA requirements. The plan does include a caveat that larger-scale street improvement projects would hinge on funding availability.

Amidei previously told the council that much of what’s in the plan is something the village already does – this would simply set it down on paper as an official policy. He said some of the major priorities would include Circle Avenue and Harrison Street improvements.

During the June 27 meeting, Amidei said he appreciated the feedback he got from the Progress Center.

Commissioner Jessica Voogd said she appreciated how the village administrator handled the outreach.

“I just wanted to thank Administrator Amidei for all his work on this project so far,” she said. “He’s been really proactive about reaching out to the public and soliciting feedback on this policy. I just wanted to commend him and acknowledge his hard work on it.”

Village rebids reservoir inspection due to prevailing wage laws Firm from Rapid City, South Dakota gets nod

Mayor Rory Hoskins told the Review in February that he wants to update the playground which dates to the 1980s. Community Center Director Karen Dylewski told the Review that the playground PROVIDED isn’t up to current code, but it’s been grandfathered in.

Village Administrator Moses Amidei previously told the Review that, in addition to getting the new playground equipment, the village is considering replacing the current wood chip surface with a more modern rubberized surface, resurfacing the asphalt portion of the playground, and erecting new fencing around the playground area. Hoskins said that fencing was needed given the proximity to a freight

railroad line and the Pace bus staging area north of the Forest Park Blue Line el station. At the time, he estimated that it would cost “at least $200,000.”

When the village bid out the inspection and clean-up project, it assumed that it wouldn’t be subject to the Illinois prevailing wage law, which requires workers who work on most government projects to be paid the equivalent of an average wage and benefits within Cook County. The averages are calculated by the Illinois Department of Labor every month.

According to the memo to the village council, Liquid Engineering asked whether Prevailing Wage would apply in this case, and village research determined that, in fact, it did, because it involves a government asset.

Originally, Liquid Engineering submitted a $9,275 bid. With the prevailing wage, it went up to $20,620. Midco’s bid, which takes prevailing wage into account, was $17,843.

But now that they have the license, and their location and business plan has been approved by the department, they are ready to hit the ground running.

“It’s hopefully [going to open] – I’d say in the next few months, maybe four months five months,” Fakhouri said. “It really depends on the supply chain. There’s a lot of issues with getting the right equipment, because everything is on back order, so there’s a lot of supply chain issues, so it’s just the matter of when you can get the key equipment.”

Forest Park’s village council agreed to cancel the village reservoir inspection and clean-up contract after the village realized that prevailing wage laws applied to this project.

While the previous bidder, Liquid Engineering Corporation of Billings, Montana, was willing to pay a prevailing wage, the revised bid put the project slightly above the $20,000 project budget. The village solicited additional proposals, and Midco Diving & Marine Services, of Rapid City, South Dakota, submitted a lower bid. With no other below-budget alternative on the horizon, the village council approved the Midco contract.

He said they hope to have the plant up and running within the next 4 to 5 months but acknowledged that supply chain issues could delay the opening.

Under current village regulations, all cannabis-related businesses are allowed by right in industrial areas, but they need to get a Special Use permit if they want to open in a commercial area. The Planning & Zoning Commission voted unanimously on May 16 to recommend allowing it by right in the Madison Street corridor, but that’s still awaiting village council approval.

Karuna, which plans to open a facility at 1401 Circle Dr., has been applying for a dispensary, craft grow and infuser license, but according to state records, it only got the latter. Hoskins said he was comfortable

Noa Garcia’s story – in two inspiring chapters 12-year-old brings jazz classics to Stoop Sessions

Forest Park resident Noa Garcia will perform songs made famous by jazz icons including Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday at the next Stoop Sessions concert at 505 Ferdinand here in Forest Park on Tuesday, July 12 beginning at 7 p.m.

Half of her story is one of talent and the building of an impressive resume at a young age.

Noa, at age 12, comes with bona fide credentials as a performer. Her first big audition was for the character Tomika in the Broadway musical School of Rock at the age of eight. Her mom, Nadine, saw a call for auditions online and signed her up.

The casting director was impressed with her talent but decided that she was too young for the part.

A year later, however she was called back to New York where she survived call back after call back and found herself among the final three girls auditioning for the part. Unfortunately, Noa’s foot was in a boot because she had broken her toe. They needed someone for the part the very next week and Noa was unable to complete the dancing portion of the audition.

Surviving five call backs was good for her self-confidence. “Everybody auditioning is really good,” she said. “I pushed myself because I knew I had the potential.

It was exciting for me. The pressure was good pressure.”

At the same time, not getting the part in the end was hard because she had gotten so close.

Her second big auditioning experience was for the parts of both Mary and Frannie in the Broadway musical, Trevor. She made it to the final audition but again did not get the part.

Nadine said although not getting a part was hard to take, “Noa has learned that you audition and then you let it go.”

Noa has had a great deal of success closer to home. She has played characters such as Elphaba in Wicked and Janis in Mean Girls. John Connely at Kagan and Gaines on Roosevelt Rd. made her the lead vocalist in his jazz band. She won “the best child

And, for the past year Noa has sung with the Grammy award winning chorus, The Soul Children of Chicago. According to its website the objective of the nonprofit is to “educate the minds, elevate the spirits and illuminate the souls of our youth.”

“I saw a video of the Soul Children two years ago,” said Noa, “and wow. It moved me for sure. Once you get in it’s like a big family.”

The other half of Noa’s story is a version of making lemonade out of lemons. Born with a cleft palate, she has gone through three surgeries, the recovery from which has been physically painful and led to bullying which has hurt emotionally.

“I don’t mind when kids ask questions,” she began, “but I do mind when people assume things like I scratched my lip or I got beat up. When people say things like that it hurts my feelings.”

Noa’s mom has helped her deal with the challenge. “My mom often tells me that I

am beautiful just the way I am,” she said.

“She says that if anyone says anything about me, that’s a reflection on themselves, that there is something about themselves that they don’t like so they bully the one person they can find. That’s one of the things I keep in mind.”

Part of the challenge is that Noa has been in several different schools so far, and each time she has to go through the same thing — having to hear off the wall comments, having to explain.

“I do tell them I have a cleft palate,” she said. “People need to learn. I welcome people asking questions about my cleft. I think it’s good to put my story out there so other kids can feel more confident about themselves.”

“We know other cleft kids,” Nadine added, “and I think the majority have retreated socially. The thing with Noa that is so beautiful is that the thing that might have made her want to retreat has propelled her to the front and she embraces it. She’ll always stand up for somebody at school.”

“It is important to mention that the trees in the elevated risk category do not necessarily pose an immediate threat, however they have defects that have an elevated potential to worsen,” the report states.

The inventory also found that Forest Park trees are fairly diverse, with 72 species represented throughout the village.

But it expressed concerns that 50% of all trees fall within the Maple genus, which means that a disease that affects maples could wipe out half of Forest Park trees.

The plan puts several maple species on the list of trees that wouldn’t be allowed to be planted, though many other maples are still allowed. It generally recommended planting trees that are currently rare in the village and are well-suited for Forest Park’s climate.

During the June 27 meeting, Village Administrator Moses Amidei encouraged residents to read the full text of the plan, which is included in the meeting packet starting with page 56.

“The Urban Forest Management Plan is going to be a guiding document for managing our urban canopy -- what we strive for, what we should encourage,” he said. “It was a great project. [I am] looking forward to improving our tree assets.”

Davis narrowly wins primary against progressive Kina Collins Congressman beats Kina Collins 52-45 in his closest congressional race since 1996

On Tuesday, Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th) emerged from a conference room inside of the National Association of Letter Carriers building in Chicago, where his election night party was taking place, with the face of an exhausted heavyweight champion fighter surprised that the match went so long.

About a half-hour earlier, the longtime congressman’s campaign party had been rather muted, with some staffers nervously whispering into cell phones and volunteers looking anxiously at a projector screen showing a local TV news anchor process election data.

When the Chicago Sun-Times projected a victory for the congressman — who as of 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday was leading his closest challenger, gun control advocate Kina Collins, 52% to 45% — the room of several dozen supporters exhaled and cheered before shouting, “Danny! Danny! Danny!”

Davis said Tuesday’s election was his narrowest margin of victory since he first ran for Congress nearly 30 years ago in 1996.

“I think the first race I ran, I got 32% of the vote, but of course it was five or six of us in that race,” he said.

Allen Evans, an activist with the Peacemaker Coalition, a group of community groups focusing on addressing violence in Austin, said he’s known Davis since he was a Chicago alderman and has volunteered on his campaigns since that first congressional race in 1996. Evans said he didn’t think this most recent election would be so close.

“Usually, young people don’t vote,” he

said. “So, I thought the senior citizens would have brought him in. I thought there would have been a much greater gap.”

Chicago Treasurer Melissa ConyearsErvin said she was confident that Davis would win, but added that the low voter turnout affected his margin of victory.

“It was just a very low turnout today and just about every race has been affected, because of that,” she said. “Because Congressman Davis is such a household name, he’s going to be fine, but this low voter turnout was tough.”

In addition to Collins, Davis faced a challenge from Denarvis Mendenhall, an Air Force veteran and compliance officer for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mendenhall had garnered about 2% of the vote, as of midnight Tuesday.

Raines-Welch, Kantas win primaries to fill judicial vacancies With no GOP opponents filing, their seats on the Cook County Circuit Court bench are secure

Raines-Welch, who is married to Emanuel “Chris” Welch, the speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, won a fourway race in the Democratic primary with 34.89 percent of the vote with all but three precincts reporting.

Riverside resident Chloe Pedersen, who is the niece of Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, finished second with 27.17 percent of the vote, 1,807 votes behind RainesWelch, according to unofficial totals posted by the Cook County Clerk on June 29.

With all but three precincts reporting, Kantas had 12,652 votes (54.9 percent) to 10,393 (45.1 percent) for Pillsbury.

Raines-Welch and Kantas teamed up during the campaign. At polling places, voters were handed glossy palm cards featuring photos of the two. Both also benefited from the support of the Lyons Township Democratic Organization, which is led by state Sen. Steve Landek.

Mary Hogan (née Gleason), 87, died peacefully in the presence of loved ones on June 17, 2022. A Minnesota native with nine siblings, she moved to Chicago in 1956 after marrying her husband, the late John E. Hogan. She will be remembered as a master seamstress with sharp wit, for her generosity and astute guidance, as the life of the party no matter the occasion, and as a consummate matriarch of her family (both blood-related and chosen).

$100,000 in cash stolen from condo

A burglar broke into a condo on the 300 block of Lathrop Avenue, stealing $100,000 in cash from a couple’s dresser.

On June 27, at 7 a.m., the couple left the condo, with the husband going to Chicago to pick up products for their store. On the way to the store, the husband stopped by the condo to grab a lunch for his wife. Upon entering the condo at 11:30 a.m., he saw that the unit has been rummaged through, with the closets emptied and all the boxes opened.

The couple kept the $100,000 in cash in the bottom drawer of their dresser. As they explained to an officer, they previously sold a condo in Chicago, used a portion of the proceeds to buy their current unit and stashed away the rest. The only other item that was stolen was a necklace with a square-shaped charm.

Forest Park police did not find any damage to the door which suggests the burglar either used a key or a “slim card” to get into the unit.

There was a surveillance camera in the building lobby, but police had not reviewed the footage at the time of the report.

Identity theft prevention scam A resident of the 300 block of Desplaines Avenue lost over $42,000 to scammers who posed as Federal Trade Commission employees investigating fraud.

On June 28, at around 10:30 a.m., the victim got a call from an individual posing as an Amazon employee who said there was a charge on her account. After she denied making the charge, she was told to speak to individuals who identified themselves as FTC attorneys. The scammers said she

was a victim of identity theft, but that they needed to investigate her to verify that she wasn’t part of the scam. They said that, as part of their investigation, they needed to take her money and store it in a “federal security locker” until the investigation is complete, and that they would send her a portion of her money to cover her living expenses. The scammers also claimed that federal law forbade her from talking to anyone about the investigation, and that hanging up on the call could lead to her being arrested.

The victim transferred $42,189 to the account that she thought belonged to the attorneys. She also gave the scammers a copy of her driver’s license, a receipt for money transfer and her bank account’s routing number. They told her that they would call her back the following day to “continue the investigation.”

Forest Park police advised the victim to block all unknown numbers and showed her how to report fraud to legitimate entities.

Burglary from vehicle A man living on the 1000 block of Desplaines Avenue found that his car was broken into overnight.

On June 29 at around 6:55 a.m., the victim went to his car to drive to work and saw that the car was rummaged through, and his change and wallet were missing. He left the car parked after returning home from work at 4:30 p.m., but he left the door unlocked.

The wallet had his drivers’ license, credit cards and $90 in cash. At the time of the report, checking his accounts didn’t show any attempts to use the credit cards.

The victim was advised to cancel his cards.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, June 27-30, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

orest Park still suffers from its inexplicable decision to stick with the obsolete commissioner form of government. Yes, we know, inside baseball. Who cares if the town has a city manager form of government, a commissioner form, or strong mayor form?

We’ve always cared because the form of government says a lot about what the community’s elected leaders have in the way of vision for the village. The commission form, which to this day gives specific commissioners sway over individual departments, was designed for one-stoplight farm towns of a century ago. This is not how a complex urban-suburban community should govern itself in 2022.

A key indicator of this backward view is that Forest Park operated without any sort of central administrative leadership until 25 years ago when it hired its first village hall administrator. That fellow, Jim Thomas, served for three years and was followed in short order by a string of professionals who never quite fit in with Forest Park’s ego-centric mayors and a form of government that confused the organizational chart.

The midground was reached when then-mayor Anthony Calderone hired his boyhood friend and political ally Tim Gillian as administrator. Gillian had served two terms as a commissioner and knew plenty about Forest Park government. He wasn’t a book-trained manager and never pretended to be.

When Gillian retired midway through the first term of Mayor Rory Hoskins, the search — like most searches for top talent during the pandemic — was sparse. The person finally chosen was Moses Amidei. He’d been the manager for 14 years of an exurban Chicago suburb so small we had to go to Google to find it. Wadsworth, the Village of Country Living, has a population of 3,517 souls.

We were not optimistic when Amidei arrived a year ago. And time will tell. But there are indications that he is steadily moving Forest Park’s government through a series of planned steps that professionalizes and prioritizes important issues in town.

This week we see a plan put forward to make Forest Park compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to all public ways. Yes, Forest Park has been installing curb cuts as streets are redone but the new plan applies a system and a tracking mechanism to the work.

Also laudable was the tree inventory issued last week which detailed the condition of Forest Park’s urban forest. Done in conjunction with, and partially paid for by, the Morton Arboretum, the inventory reported the condition of the trees on public ways is good while specifically dictating that a handful of trees must come down and 175 more that are in worsening shape. The inventory also reported Forest Park is overstocked with maples and needs to further diversify its plantings if it is to avoid some potential future scourge such as the ones that took out so many elm and ash trees in America.

These are the sort of projects a well-run community executes as a matter of planning and purpose.

We’re impressed to see Forest Park on this path.

Is he evil or just crazy?

ast Saturday, Pastor Walter Mitty couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

As the men were filing into the Main Café for their weekly fellowship breakfast, Alice pulled him aside and whispered, “I hate to admit it, Reverend, but what you’ve been saying about Trump is true. The guy is nuts.”

It seemed Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney weren’t the only conservatives in the land who thought that Trump’s train had just hit a dump truck at an unrestricted railroad crossing.

On the way home, he remembered hearing the conservative columnist Michael Gerson saying on a news program that he thought 45 was evil.

And then his mind flashed back to one of the January 6 Commission hearings when William Barr stated in a video that the president who had appointed him was “not in touch with reality.” To Mitty, that was a polite way of saying that the former president was, in fact, nuts.

“Evil,” thought Mitty, “is part of my vocabulary. It’s a religious term with which secular folks often feel uncomfortable. They’d rather deal with empirically verifiable concepts like mental illness, included in something like the Physicians Desk Manual.”

But still, Pastor Walt liked to feel that his faith was at least partly defensible to thinking people.

He would hold debates in his mind with his humanist friends about subjects like sin, evil, prayer and the existence of a divine being … and, of course, in his fantasies he always won.

But this was real life, and the existence of democracy might be at stake, so as he usually did when he was wrestling with a complicated issue, he called his friend Michael Rosenthal.

“You’ve been watching the Jan. 6 Commission hearings, right, Michael? Do you think Donald Trump is an evil person or just unhinged?”

Mitty’s neighbor started laughing and said, “Where did that come from, Walt?”

“Seriously, Michael, I’ve been trying to figure out the difference. It just seems that the behavior of Trump, Giuliani and the supporters of the Big Lie can’t be explained just by bad potty training.”

“So psychology can’t provide plausible explanations for everything?”

“Well, yeah.”

“I can tell you what Rabbi Levine says about that. He says that in every person there is a struggle between Yetzer ha-tov and Yetzer ha-ra, the good and evil urges that compete with each other inside each of us.”

“And that’s different from mental illness, right?”

After a moment, Michael said, “That makes me think of an image in some Native American religions of a bad wolf and a good wolf existing in each of us.

“Right,” Mitty responded, “and it depends on which one you feed.”

They got onto other subjects like Michael’s sciatica and his neighbor’s allergies.

After hanging up, Pastor Walt called up Bernie Rolvaag at the History/Herstory bookstore.

“Bernie, this is Walt. Do you have a copy of Obama’s Hiroshima speech anywhere in your books?”

Bernie came back with the text of the speech in five minutes.

“Got it Walt, but I’d like to know what you’re looking for.”

So the pastor explained he was wrestling with the concept of evil and seemed to recall that President Obama had mentioned something about it in that speech.

“Got it, Walt,” Bernie replied. “It’s a short speech. Give me a minute. I think I know what you want.”

When Bernie returned, he said, “I think this is the core of what you’re looking for. Obama talked about humanity’s ‘core contradiction, how the very spark that marks us as a species, our thoughts, our imagination, our language, our toolmaking, our ability to set ourselves apart from nature and bend it to our will — those very things also give us the capacity for unmatched destruction.’”

Bernie added one more quote: “The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires a moral revolution as well.”

Mitty thanked Bernie and started thinking about how so many people took the concept of evil seriously. They used different metaphors — bad urges, bad wolves, humankind’s core contradiction — but they all pointed to an aspect of human nature, which, although impossible to verify empirically, was still plausible for many.

That’s when the pastor of Poplar Park Community Church had to chuckle. We religious folk have been comfortable with the concept of evil for thousands of years, he thought, and we might apply the idea to the Nazis in Germany and the Hutus in Rwanda, but we also feel compelled to scrutinize our own souls.

It’s not just an inner contradiction, he concluded. There is also a battle going on between powers greater than we mortals can deal with on our own, and that’s one of the contributions religious folk have to make to the debate over what happened on Jan. 6, 2021.

How to save our democracy

he best way to protect democracy is to participate in it. The simplest way to participate is to vote. Although access to voting has increased, overall turnout for the 2022 primaries was lower than two years ago. Voter turnout for Cook County hovered around 20%. Turnout wasn’t low due to the weather. Election Day offered pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunshine. So why did 80% stay home?

Some believe their vote doesn’t count and feel powerless. Instead of experiencing how empowering it is to vote, they are suppressing their own. For the first time in my life, I requested a Republican ballot because I wanted to support a candidate from Forest Park. It was easy to fill out the ballot. Cook County is such a Democratic stronghold, many of the races lacked a Republican candidate.

This didn’t feel like democracy. A major political party unable to even field candidates. It’s a widespread problem, though. A friend of mine lives in a heavily Republican county. The local Democrats only fielded one candidate for office. They persuaded someone to run for coroner. As for myself, I like every aspect of voting, including the

“I Voted” sticker you receive afterwards.

Voting is like the “comfort food” of democracy. It’s an easy, painless way to support candidates and causes. It’s especially gratifying, when you consider the sacrifices many have made to even cast a ballot. Efforts to suppress voting are still underway, so the struggle to cast a ballot continues in many areas, but we can’t claim this to be a problem in Cook County.

Apart from voting, there are many ways to participate in democracy. We can write to our congressional representative. We can also man a phone bank for a candidate. We can protest in the streets, like we have done to support organizations like Forest Park against Racism.

We can register people to vote. My late friend Mark Rogovin joined me to register voters in Indiana. We spent about eight hours registering around 20 voters, but it felt gratifying to do even that much. We also conducted our own protest against the Iraq War by displaying signs on highway overpasses. We either received a honk, or a finger, depending on the driver’s political views.

My grandmother served as a Democratic precinct captain in the hostile environs of River Forest.

One of the happiest days of my life was spent canvassing voters in River Forest for a candidate from Forest Park. When we knocked on their doors, residents were so friendly and receptive. Unfortunately, our candidate lost a close race. Turnout was only around 20% on an 80-degree Election Day. Finally, we can run for office ourselves.

We all witnessed the political miracle 209 Together pulled off to be elected to the District 209 school board. Tragically, the progress and policy making they initiated is being undone by the current board. Our local politics can be such a quagmire that it prompts some voters to ask, “Why bother?”

However, we have had so many earthshaking changes on the national level, voting seems more important than ever.

Policies that are favored by most Americans are under attack. There are assaults on everything from reproductive rights to protecting the environment.

Wearing an “I Voted” sticker will not just make us feel good as a citizen. It’s essential to protecting democracy.

Where’s the beef?

In 1984 Wendy’s aired a commercial where three elderly women were remarking on how big the bun of an enormous hamburger was in front of them. When the top bun is lifted and a tiny patty of beef is revealed, octogenarian actress Clara Peller calls out, “Where’s the beef ?” Her famous voice and catchphrase became an instant cult phenomenon across the United States.

Clara Peller, who was a manicurist in Chicago, was hired on a temporary basis for a commercial set. The agency that produced the commercial recognized the value of her unique voice and no-nonsense personality, so they signed her up as an actress. She would be the star of commercials for Wendy’s and other products through her early 80s. When she died in 1987, this extraordinary woman was laid to rest in Forest Park’s Jewish Waldheim Cemetery.

12. Assemble, test, and install network, telecommunication and data equipment and cabling.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Principals and procedures of computer systems, such as, data communication, hierarchical structure, backups, testing and critical analysis.

Hardware and software configuration of. computers, servers and mobile devices, including computing environment of Windows Server and Desktop OS and applications, Unix/Linux OS, VMware, iOS/Android.

Network protocols, security, configuration and administration, including firewalls, routers, switches and wireless technology.

Cabling and wiring, including CAT5/6, fiber network, telephone, serial communication, termination, and punch-down.

Telecommunications theory and technology, including VoiP, serial communication, wireless protocols, PBX, analog, fax, voicemail and auto-attendant.

Principles and methods of computer programming, coding and testing, including power shell, command scripting, macros, and

VB scripts.

Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

Technical writing, office productivity tools and database packages.

Possession of a valid Illinois Driver License is required at the time of appointment.
