The Forest Park Elementary School District 91 Board of Education unanimously approved a new contract with the Forest Park Educators Association, the union representing teachers and staff, during its July 14 meeting.

The contract, which will last through the 2025-26 school year, includes annual starting salary increases for new teachers for the first three years and annual salary increases for existing teachers for all four years.

It caps the number of school days per school year at 187 days and sets aside two days for curriculum development. The contract also includes the language explicitly prohibiting strikes or any other labor actions.

Forest Park Theatre aims to nurture local talent Troupe to hold live readings on Tuesdays, discusses collaboration with District 91

As Forest Park Theatre company gears up for its second season, Artistic Director Richard Corley said they want to do more in the community, such as offering readings, working with local school districts and eventually getting enough funding to land a permanent physical location.

The company made its debut in 2021, staging free outdoor performances of William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” at the Roos Pavilion, 7329 Harrison St. This year, they will stage free performances of “Innogen,” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline,” at The Grove at Altenheim, 7824 Madison St., on Aug. 5 to 7 and Aug. 12-14, at 5 p.m.

A special preview show will be held at the Forest Park Public Library, 7555 Jackson Blvd., on July 23 at 3:30 p.m.

And the theater doesn’t plan on slowing

down. Corley said they plan on doing readings at Forest Park American Legion Post No. 414, 500 Circle Ave., every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., starting Sept.

The company is currently working with Forest Park District 91 to set up theater lessons at Forest Park Middle School, with the ultimate goal of not only getting teens interested in a theater, but potentially offering theater camp and other acting opportunities further down the line.

Corley and his wife, Tanera Marshall, moved to Forest Park about five years ago.

They are both longtime teachers in the theater department at University of Illinois at Chicago, with Corley teaching acting and theater history and Marshall teaching voice and speech.

Forest Park hasn’t had a theater company of its own since Circle Theatre moved to Oak Park in 2010. Corley said he wanted to start a company because he believes theater can bring the community together, and because he was conscious of the fact that many of his students struggled to find work and he wanted to do his part to help change that.

Out of the 12 current cast members, two of them – Freya Trefonides, who plays Pisanio, princess Innogen’s loyal servant,

and Avery Fountain, who plays the villainous Iachimo – are Forest Parkers. Corley said managing director Shelley Wright and Jason Martin, one of their dialect consultants, are Forest Parkers as well.

“We got a lot of folks who are working close with us, not just actors, but also people in the community who have been very supportive,” he said.

Corley said he was interested in “Cymbeline” because, like many other plays Shakespeare wrote toward the end of his career, it didn’t fit neatly into any one genre, using elements of comedy, tragedy, romance and action-adventure.

The original play focused on the travails of Princess Innogen and her husband, Posthumus, who were torn apart because, as the only heir of king Cymbeline, she had to marry someone of a royal blood.

Corley said he wanted to stage a version of the story that puts Innogen front and center, because he believes that theater has the power to bring different perspectives to life and bridge divides.

“I’m interested in how stories are told often through a male lens, and I’m trying to shift a story and try to tell it through the lens of the woman,” Corley said.

He said the event would be a deliberately low-tech production – nothing but natural

light and all the props contained within four trucks. There will be bleacher seating, and space where audience can put down blankets.

“I love the idea of summer theater being performed within daylight, without microphones – just the actors and the audience,” Corley said.

District 91 spokesperson Nurys UcetaRamos told the Review that discussions with the troupe were still in the early stages and said that there is nothing planned for the 2022-23 school year.

However, she said that it was something that the district was interested in pursuing, describing it as part of the broader effort to build relationships with community organizations throughout Forest Park.

In a statement to the Review, District 91 Superintendent Elizabeth Alvarez echoed that message.

“When we think about the whole child, the arts are really important,” she said.

“We are looking forward to having that partnership for the student’s benefit and the benefit of families and teachers as well.”

CLEAN AND GREEN: The lions that guard the entrance to the Art Institute were removed on June 14 and transported to the Conservation of Sculpture and Objects Studio Inc., at 900 Desplaines Ave. in Forest Park, headed by conservator Andrzej Dajnowksi. At East camp, football becomes a ‘tool to open doors’ Coach Aaron Peppers’ annual football camp featuring retired NFL player Sergio Brown seeks to make the sport instructive for life

Aaron Peppers, a Maywood trustee and the Proviso East varsity football coach, said he had an epiphany when he started coaching football in Maywood.

“I began coaching in 1993 and I saw how behind we were in our athletic programs and parks and it really hurt me, as a man, to have to pass out inadequate equipment to kids who just wanted to learn and have an opportunity,” Peppers said.

That vision, to help give local young people the tools to succeed — both on the field and in life — was on display last week during the second annual football camp hosted by the coach’s family organization.

The organization, JADSPEP, is a play on the first names of everyone in the Peppers family, including Peppers, his wife, Shawn, and their three children: Joshua, Ashanti and Daliyah.

“The mission is to instill discipline, autonomy and self-determination in young boys in the neighborhood to prepare them on the field and off, so that they can be better citizens and lead the world,” Shawn said.

The organization, she added, is also an extension of her husband’s long evolution as a coach, first with the Maywood Bucks football organization and then as an assistant coach at Proviso East before becoming the high school’s head varsity coach. Peppers was head coach from 2005 until 2010 before getting hired to the position again in 2020.

“He’s always been a community guy, he wanted to see his children succeed,” said Shawn about her husband, who was a longtime Maywood Police officer before retiring a few years ago.

During last week’s camp, held at Proviso East High School in Maywood from July 13 through July 16, former NFL safety and East football standout Sergio Brown mingled with camp participants, who ranged from 8 to 18 years old.

Brown, who played in the league from 2010 to 2017, has known Peppers since the former’s Pop Warner days. Peppers also coached Brown at East. The two joined

well.”

Shawn said Brown is among a crowded field of former Peppers players who are now thriving in life.

“A lot of the young men that have played for him have gone on to be stock brokers, coaches, teachers, great parents and they’re just flourishing,” she said. “So that’s what he wants to bring back.

“A lot of the young men I’ve raised come back and help — physically, mentally, spiritually and monetarily,” Coach Peppers said.

One of his former players, whom Peppers describes as a son, is Marcus Dunlop, a board member with Vora Capital, a New York City investment firm.

“He grew up right on 7th and Washington and lost his dad at an early age,” Peppers said. “I was his Pop Warner coach. “His mom would let me know that he couldn’t show up until the second half of the game, because he had to go to church. So, I understood that and it was a beautiful thing.”

Dunlop is one of the camp’s biggest sponsors, Peppers said, adding that other sponsors include Amazon, Cintas, Restore Construction, Leadez, Lakeshore Recycling Systems, Al McKinnor and Chicago’s Chicken Shack.

Camp participants like Phachaus Coleman, 15, of Maywood, represent the next generation of proud Peppers players who have thrived on and off the field.

“This is my first year attending,” Coleman said.” I signed up for the camp, because I played football last year and wanted

to get better. I am loving it so far. I love how my coaching staff runs the program and how everything is set up. I feel like I’m getting faster by doing parachutes.”

If Coach Peppers has his way, Coleman will parachute into success beyond the gridiron.

“For football to be the tool and opportunity to open other doors is priceless,” Peppers said.

Pay raises but no strikes from page 1 for the new teachers will be set at $48,000 for the 2022-23 school year, $48,501 for the 2023-24 school year, and $49,007 for the 202425 and in 2025-26 school years.

This comes as the national teacher shortage has grown more acute during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the November/December issue of the Illinois School Board Journal, the publication of the Illinois Association of School Boards, in 2020-21 school year, there were 6,200 vacant teaching and staff positions statewide.

The article cited “inadequate compensation,” stressful conditions, lack of professional development and lack of support from the administration and the board as the culprits.

Teachers already employed by the dis-

trict will get salary increases as well. In 2022-23 school year, teachers get flat $5,000 raises. In the 2023-24 and 2024-2025 school years, they will get 5-percent salary increases, and 4-percent salary increases for the 2025-26 school year.

Aside from setting a maximum number of school days, the contract specifies that, out of the 187 days, 176 will be regular school days, four days will be allocated to professional development, two would be reserved for “principal-directed teacher collaboration” and five will be ‘emergency days.”

Union President Meghan Binder told the Review that the cap codifies what has already been an informal practice. What did change was the number of full days set aside for teacher collaboration, where teachers would together to develop curricula. In the past, these planning sessions were held after school, which was “often difficult for teachers to plan for in terms of childcare and whatnot.”

“We feel [having two full-service days]

will help both the teachers and the district have a more productive use of time for teacher collaboration,” Binder said.

The contract also states that, during the term of the agreement, the union members “not to strike, not to participate in any work stoppage or slow down, and not to in any way engage in any concerted job action which would materially interfere with the operation or administration of the district.”

A statement released by the school district quotes Binder as saying that the union was happy with how the negotiations turned out.

“Our negotiation team is grateful that both parties were fully involved in the entire process and showed a good faith effort during the negotiations,” she stated. “Overall, we’re happy to have worked alongside the district to negotiate terms that will hopefully work to attract and retain highquality educators as we move forward into the next few years.”

During the July 14 meeting, Superinten-

dent Vanessa Alvarez said contract negotiations started in April and ended June 13.

The union ratified the contract on July 5.

She said that she was grateful for the work the negotiating teams.

“Our teachers deserve this raise,” she said. “They, now more than ever, need to be recognized for their hard work and dedication to our children and what they bring to our school, our families, and the community.”

Board President Kyra Tyler said Alvarez deserved credit for the negotiations’ success as well. She said that she hoped that this would set the stage for equally fruitful negotiations in the future.

“We finished on the night when there was a tornado, so we spent hours in the basement, but we worked through it,” Tyler said. “I think the whole district wins now that we have a plan moving forward for the next four years. We’re really excited to support our teachers, and we hope this is setting us up for continued progress down the road.”

District 91 appoints therapist to fill school board vacancy Al-Fuquan Brooks chosen from a pool of nine applicants

Family therapist Al-Fuquan Brooks was appointed to Forest Park School District 91 Board of Education during the board’s July 14 meeting.

He was chosen from the field of nine candidates to fill the vacancy created after board member L’erin Cross resigned on June 3. Brooks will serve until the April 2023 municipal election, where he will have an opportunity to run for the remaining two years of Cross’ term.

According to the statement from the district, Brooks was chosen because of his professional experience, and the fact that he has two kids in the district, made him the best choice.

According to a bio provided by the district, Brooks is a veteran and holds a master’s degree from LaSalle University in Philadelphia in clinical counseling psy-

Brooks’ LinkedIn profile online states that his professional experience primarily revolves around providing therapy for children and couples. He offers trauma-focused couples and family therapy for active-duty service members and veterans at the Forest Park Vet Center, 1515 S. Harlem Ave. Brooks also has a private practice in Forest Park.

Since January 2022, he has been on the board of the Phoenix Clinic, a Chicago nonprofit that works to bring affordable therapy to those without access to mental health services.

District 91 school board Vice President Shannon Wood and board Secretary Monique Cotton-Yancy reviewed the applications and interviewed the candidates.

Because Cross served less than a year of her term, state law requires that the voters

get a chance to weigh in on who will hold the seat at next municipal election. Brooks will be able to run for the seat, but so will any other eligible candidates.

During the July 14 meeting, board President Kyra Tyler said she appreciated the “number of qualified, talented applicants, which is really a real blessing.”

“We are really excited that, in this strange time in our country, we are able to garner interest and excitement and passion,” she said. “People are willing to lend their time for what’s really important, I think – supporting our children.”

After swearing in Brooks, Tyler said that his professional background “lends very beautifully to serving on a school board in this very interesting time in our country.”

In his application, Brooks wrote that, watching Forest Park respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s been impressed with the community’s resilience and he wanted to be more involved.

“People often describe [Forest Park] as having ‘potential,’ but I think it has much more than that,” he wrote. “I see Forest Park as a resilient community whose population, needs and resources are changing very quickly in response to the pandemic and oncoming recession.”

A sense of urgency motivates Kina backers Forest Parkers talk about why they voted for Collins over Danny Davis

“Sure,” said Forest Park resident Etta Worthington, “I have voted for Danny Davis in the past, but that was before Kina Collins.”

When Kina Collins ran in the Democratic primary against Danny Davis in 2020, she received only 13.9% of the vote. Two years later Collins garnered an impressive 45.3% against the incumbent who has represented the 7th Illinois Congressional District for 14 terms — since 1997.

Four Forest Parkers explained the remarkable surge.

Urgency Betty Alzamora put it this way. “The district is long overdue for representation that leads with urgency on the issues that matter to our communities at its core.”

“I can’t support our current representative who may have done great things years ago,” Worthington explained, “but seems strangely silent now on important issues.

The fact is our congressman is not leading on core progressive issues.”

“I’m an AOC girl myself,” Heather Vickery declared, a comment indicating the urgency felt by folks who vote for Collins.

At a meet-and-greet/fundraiser held at O’Sullivan’s, Congressman Davis urged everyone present to be patient. Without naming his challenger in what was then the upcoming primary, he named many of the issues Collins was addressing but added, “It takes time. It takes a process. I’ve been working on these issues for years.”

Just before the primary election, President Biden joined other establishment Democrats in endorsing Danny Davis.

Kina Collins’ supporters, however, have run out of patience.

USPS mail facility evacuates after bomb threat The United States Postal Service bulk mail processing facility at 7500 Roosevelt Rd. was evacuated after an employee reported spotting a possible live hand grenade.

On July 12, at 8:33 a.m., one of the employees was unstacking the bins and reported seeing what looked like a hand grenade in a clear plastic bin. In keeping with the procedure, all employees evacuated the building and the Cook County bomb squad was called in. But when the postal inspectors arrived at the scene, it was determined that the hand grenade wasn’t live.

The bomb squad call was canceled and the postal employees returned to the center.

Rowdy funeral The reports of a funeral for a gun violence victim sent police departments resulted in multiple reckless driving citations last week.

The procession took place on July 15, traveling westbound on Jackson Boulevard before turning onto Desplaines Avenue at around 1:25 p.m. as it headed toward the Forest Home Cemetery, 863 Desplaines Ave. Vehicles reportedly swerved in and out of traffic to pass each other, and passengers were seen hanging out the windows.

At several points, vehicles stopped and the mourners got out to dance in the middle of Jackson Boulevard and on top the vehicles.

Forest Park police issued 24 citations for negligent driving. One of the cited vehicles, a white 2021 Land Rover, reportedly carried several AR-15 style rifles, but the vehicle fled on Harrison Avenue before it could be pulled over.

Thefts from fitness center A customer at the Planet Fitness, 7530 Roosevelt Rd., had his wallet stolen from a locked locker, in what was, according to an employee, the latest in the series of thefts.

On July 11, at around 8:06 p.m., the victim left his belongings in the locker and secured it with a personal combination lock.

At 9:16 p.m., he got a notification from his bank about a suspicious $526.90 transaction at a Target store.

Concerned, the victim went back to the locker room and saw that the lock was removed, and his bag was missing. Employees subsequently found two bags, including the victim’s, left in the showers. The only thing that was missing from the victim’s bag was his wallet.

Employees reportedly told police that there have been “approximately four” incidents of thefts from the lockers, usually bags being removed from the lockers.

The police had no suspects at the time of the report.

Motor vehicle thefts Forest Park experienced multiple motor vehicle thefts over the past week along with several attempts. Most notably, several Kias were broken into during the same time period, though only one was stolen.

A red 2012 Kia Sportage was stolen from the municipal parking lot at 1200 Marengo Ave. during the overnight hours of July 15-16. When the victim reported the theft, he discovered that the Oak Park Police Department had it towed after it was found to be left running and abandoned in the 900

block of Euclid Avenue.

This was one of the several instances when a Kia had its steering column peeled – though this was the only incident where the vehicle was successfully stolen.

A white 2017 Kia Sportage and a 2016 Kia Optima parked in the 100 block of Harlem Avenue had their passenger side and back window broken, respectively, and both had their steering columns peeled. Both incidents happened overnight on July 15-16.

Sometime during the same time period, a light-blue 2007 Kia Sportage parked in the 900 block of Marengo Avenue was damaged the same way.

Other vehicle thefts included a black 2007 BMW X5 Sedan, which was stolen from the 200 block of Marengo Avenue overnight on July 12-13 and a black 2020 Ford sedan, which was stolen from Thorntons gas station, 601 S. Harlem Ave., on July 15 at 8:13 a.m.

The victim said she left her keys in the ignition of the vehicle, which she had rented from Hertz, as she made a quick visit to the

minimart. Hertz tracked the car to Chicago’s Fulton Market District neighborhood.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, July 11-17, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Dangerous paving equipment location We’re happy to see the paving on Harlem Avenue. Why the bulk of the Harlem/290 section was paved during morning rush hour, causing residents to drive around active machines, over hot asphalt, without someone directing traffic, is another matter. Why not do that at night?

Lately the company doing the paving has parked their massive equipment extremely close to the intersection of Harlem and Harrison, adjacent to the U Haul store

there. It’s been like this for many days now.

This causes the westbound lane to be more than 60% blocked so that cars turning off of Harlem nearly strike anyone at the intersection trying to turn left toward I-290.

Eastbound Harrison is sort of down to 1.5 lanes at the moment.

This is dangerous and inconvenient. I’m wondering why they aren’t on the Oak Park side near the Post Office where there’s a

Forest Park invests in teachers

s it moves into a moment of profound and essential change, the District 91 Forest Park Public Schools have resolved one foundational challenge by coming to generous terms with its faculty.

A new and multi-year contract was ratified by an enthusiastic and large margin by teachers and unanimously OK’d by the school board. And why not? The raises over the three-year term of the contract are high.

But as the district prepares to open classes this fall with one fewer school building, teachers realigned in the remaining buildings and uncertainty over future plans for building configurations the district’s dedicated faculty are rightly concerned. Will fewer teachers be needed in the future? How will enrichment classes be structured? Can the district attract the new teachers and aides it might need in a difficult hiring environment?

We’ve been supportive of this school board and its new superintendent, Elizabeth Alvarez, as they have made a series of tough decisions. But declining enrollment in this small district had to be addressed. And now there will need to be progress — slow and steady works for us — on student achievement. We are not bound by the results of standardized testing. But all involved recognize that Forest Park elementary students are not learning at the levels they will need to find success going forward.

These raises are possible because generous Forest Park taxpayers have invested without fail in these schools. There is money in the bank. But it is not endless and taxpayers will rightly become stingier if this shrinking district cannot find its direction, build momentum and spirit and grow into a mighty engine that helps to grow our village.

Reiger Park’s moment Credit the Park District of Forest Park for getting its ducks lined up in a row. This ambitious district negotiated with village government to take over the planning and operations of most of Forest Park’s long overlooked and underused “pocket parks.”

Now the district, with the help of supportive local state legislators, has lined up an essential $400,000 grant from the state to invest in the plain and unconsidered Reiger Park at the corner of Circle Avenue and 16th St. The largest of the pocket parks, Reiger is of good size and had some popularity in the south Forest Park neighborhood. But it was never planned, its use never maximized.

That changes now as the district has the money in hand, has a preliminary batch of options and is about to re-engage the neighborhood in how it wants the space to be used. We’d expect it will wind up as a combination of active recreation space and some elements of a passive park for quieter use.

Construction should start in the spring of 2023. And then the fun begins.

nglish language doesn’t have a word that quite captures the feeling of anticipation, the feeling Winnie Pooh Bear explains, “Well, what I like best,” and then he had to stop and think. Because although eating honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you eat it which is even better, but he didn’t know what it was called.”

The Inuit word, iktsuarport (eek-soowuhr-pohk) is that feeling.

When one of my friends brought spray paint to her Catholic high school because she thought it would be cool to graffiti a wall, she spent the day in a state of iktsuarport. With her paint can tucked in her backpack, she imagined putting her plan into action when the opportunity came.

Once the school programs ended and she was alone, she took her private rebellion to a stadium wall. Secretly, she boldly expressed her bad attitude, and wrote the first thing that came to her mind. Her name. Both her first and last name, in big black letters.

When she was called in the next day by the principal, as she retells the story, she was shocked they knew it was her.

Sidewalks too hold the names of people etched into them when their short-lived wet stage can be used to secure a moment in time and place. Under the viaduct on Desplaines is Claudia and Katie who marked their passage in 2002. Not far from them is Laura and Petek. Savana’s name and heart is on the 1400 block of Marengo with neighbors Justin and Niko.

On the 800 block of Thomas is a notable historical footnote, a sidewalk block with about a dozen neighborhood names and another note. In big letters it says, “Watergate was big when Ben did this!” According to a CBS article from 2014 the sidewalk had a crack and was repaired in 1973 by Ben Curran, who lived on the block and laid the concrete. His wife suggested making a historical note, and they did.

When Rep. Jamie Raskin delivered closing remarks during the July 12 hearing of the House Select Committee Investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol Attack and said, “The Watergate break-in was like a Cub Scout meeting compared to this assault on our people and our institutions,” I thought about that sidewalk.

While we do not have an English word that is equal to iktsuarport, we do have the word, demagogue. We use this to describe a political leader who seeks support by appealing to the desires, fears and prejudices of ordinary people rather than using rational argument and appealing to their better angels.

Demagogue is the antithesis of our local Midwestern values. Locally, it is prized to think beyond one’s self and to consider others. In this case, the sidewalk scribblers considered future generations who might pass by. Courage, coupled with humility and an unselfish nature, are common values exhibited by our regional heroes, as seen in people like by Ray Nitschke, Joanne Winter, John Prine, Eugene Cernan, Greg Foster and Doc Rivers.

Whenever our humble local values collide with a demagogue style of leadership, it creates friction. The cultural collision between those who value genuine gratitude, courageous humility, and consideration of others does not mix well with those who peddle fear, selective truths, authoritarianism, and disguise their pride through victimhood.

I wonder if a crack in a sidewalk will be found in the coming months and a local will try to fix it, just as Ben did in 1973. Perhaps when they do, a message will be left for future generations to reflect on.

I’ll savor my iktsuarport in the meantime and keep an eye out for that message.

Give me face-to-face over virtual anyday

’m not a phone person. I prefer face-to-face communication whenever possible. The modern fascination with electronic devices mystifies me. I’ve become accustomed to people staring down at their gadgets, though I still wince when they ignore their companions — especially when their companion is me.

The worst excess is seeing parents playing with their phones instead of their kids. Is pushing a swing that boring?

The greatest gift we can give our kids is our undivided attention. Plus, my wife and I suffered many kidrelated disasters because one of us was on the phone.

I heard about a father who was supposed to be watching his son at the mall. The phone-distracted dad didn’t notice his boy climb a fence and enter the mini-train yard.

The boy laid down on the tracks directly in the path of the kiddie-train. It ran over his legs, causing the train to derail. No one was seriously hurt but how do you explain the bruises to his mom? I would have bribed the kid’s silence with ice cream.

their kids. Rachel Stafford is a recovering electronics-addict who publishes a blog, www. handsfreemama.com. Stafford came to the realization that texting, talking and playing games on her phone was coming between her and her two young daughters. Compulsively taking their picture was also causing her to “miss out on the moment.”

To avoid missing more moments, Stafford proposes drastic measures. These include removing social media apps from the phone or putting the devices away in a drawer. The site also includes inspirational essays, like “The Art of Showing Up” and cautionary ones like “How to Miss a Childhood.”

Not everyone believes being a hands-free mama is a good idea. One mother claimed to be so adept at multitasking that she can still keep an eye on her kids. Another told me these devices are necessary for getting directions and communicating with other parents. A third mentioned the phones have apps that keep kids quiet in restaurants.

Personally, I’d rather interact with a kid than a phone. When our kids were toddlers, they were way more entertaining than any

TV show. Now when I watch my grandsons, I don’t want us to be distracted by screens.

I’d rather play cars, blocks and other threedimensional games with them. They are captivating and exhausting in equal measure.

Of course, there are times they don’t want to play with their “papa.” They would prefer to curl up with their iPad. I don’t understand why they find this so entertaining.

But if these had been around when I was a kid, I probably would never have left the house. I would have been a pale, sickly child instead of the third-string right-fielder.

I don’t take phone calls when I’m on grandkid duty. I’m worried that the 1-yearold might get hurt if I’m not constantly vigilant. I also don’t read the news, check Facebook, or deal with emails. Those are off-duty pastimes. I know when to stop scrolling my phone when I realize, “I already read this depressing story” or “I already saw what so-and-so had for breakfast.”

I’m finally comfortable with texting, but I’m not very adept at it. My fingers are pudgy, so I press the wrong keys. I haven’t learned to use my thumbs. I know many young people who can text as fast as they talk. Have you ever observed a group of them furiously texting each other, even though they’re in the same room? It’s enough to make you LOL.

e are thrilled once again to be hosting the 16-Inch No Glove Softball Tournament this year! After the year off in 2020, we were so excited to see everyone last year and we look forward to another successful event this year.

Once again, the teams are very excited to be invited to this prestigious tournament. Maintaining that standard continues to be a priority.

Our staff are working extremely hard to continue to accomplish our normal success with this event. We faced a few challenges this year with supply shortages and price increases, but our goal is to maintain lower fees with the highest of standards at this event.

We are also very excited to welcome back our committed volunteers and new volunteers. Staff shortages are something most are facing. We are fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers who make this event a success. Along with committed volunteers, our staff put this weekend aside, always looking forward to helping. Thank you to all who help make this event what it is!

Working for this wonderful community and providing the greatest tournament is an honor. We cannot wait to see everyone come out this year. Look forward to great softball, good food and great company on the best softball fields!

The 2021 No Gloves champion looks for repeat performance

here’s been a major shift in the game of softball, which is why Kevin Duff started Circus in 2019. In “old-school” softball, teams played games almost every weeknight and competed in tournaments on the weekends.

Duff used to play a similar schedule for Signature, winning the No Gloves tournament three times. But now that he has three children under the age of 5, he wants to spend more time with his family. Circus plays just one night a week.

“The old contingent gets mad about a lack of commitment,” Duff said. “But we want to formulate a different lifestyle.”

Like several players on the team, Duff coaches his kid’s teams. Players also involve their families with the games.

“It’s like a circus,” Duff said of the atmosphere. “We do our best to be there for the

games. Then we think, ‘We’re here, we might as well win.’”

That’s exactly what happened at last year’s heart-pounding No Gloves tournament. Circus was down five runs to Flash in the seventh Inning. They came back with six runs in the final frame to beat Flash and advanced to the championship games. They lost the first one but won the next two to take the title. Not bad for a team that was only in its fourth year of existence.

“I have a very deep appreciation for the game,” said Duff, who plays second base and bats second. He grew up in the Oak Park area and learned the game from his Hall of Fame father, Tom Duff. One of his proudest moments came when he played alongside his dad.

“I want to play with my son someday,” he said.

When he was with Signature, Duff was playing about 100 games per season. “Signature was up there with the 45’s. We finished in second and third place until we finally broke See CIRCUS on page B6

“The Saturday night games are the key,” Duff said. “They are biggest games of the No Gloves. You’re under the lights with the biggest crowds. The pressure is on. You’re one bad hop away from ruining your whole weekend.”

Duff ’s teammate, Tim Koronkowski, has great memories of last year’s No Gloves.

He also has some painful ones. On Friday night, the shortstop was fielding a grounder when he broke a finger on his left hand.

“A teammate pulled it back into position,” Koronkowski said. “I was in a different zone for the tournament. I was running on adrenaline and Busch Light.”

The broken finger didn’t keep Koronkowski from hitting a two-run homer during the championship series. Video of the homer was posted on the Slow-Pitch Softball Association Facebook page. It’s

Koronkowski’s softball career began at Hoyne Park at 35th Street and Archer Avenue in Chicago. A park employee nicknamed Bimbo recruited him to play left field.

“I spent every waking hour playing sports at the park,” he said. “I was 17 years old and I got hooked.”

Before he joined Circus, Koronkowski was playing 10 games a week. Now, he plays once or twice a week.

“Circus was started how our families want it. It’s not just a softball game, we combine families,” he said. “The majority of the players have young kids. All the kids and moms get along.”

Koronkowski has a young son and daughter with a third child coming in December.

Duff compared the transition from two kids to three, as shifting from man-to-man defense to zone. Koronkowski agrees, noting they will soon be in “nickel coverage.”

Both players would also agree that the No Gloves tournament is the one they want to win.

“I’ve won it three times,” Koronkowski said, “I’m hoping for a fourth. All our gunners are out. We’re ready to roll. If we lose, it won’t be for lack of effort.”

Softball is all in the family for Russ clan Randy Russ reflects on the sport in that’s ‘in our family’s blood’

he Russ family is steeped in softball. Bob Russ Sr. is in the 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame. His sons, Randy and Bob, Jr., also have plaques. Randy’s nephew, Ryan Russ, plays left field for Flashback.

“We’ll be there for the induction ceremony,” said Randy Russ, 54, “Our whole family loves coming to the tournament. It’s like a reunion.”

The No Gloves tournament is an annual reunion for players and spectators alike.

For four days, they gather at The Park.

There are former teammates and rivals and plenty of kids.

“When I was 10-11 years old,” Russ re-

called, “I was shagging flies before the games.”

Before starting his softball career, Russ played baseball at Lewis University during the late 1980s. One season, he was named NCAA Division II Player of the Year.

“I played shortstop and batted leadoff. I got the party started,” he said.

After he made the adjustment to softball, Russ became a left fielder.

“All the little fast guys played the outfield. I played on the Splinters, Lettuce and Licorice,” Russ said. “It was the same core of players with different sponsors. I had different weapons, offensively and defensively. I was a cutter but I could also drive the ball.”

Russ became good friends with one of the sponsors, Mike North. The sports radio personality was instrumental in getting Chicago public high schools to make 16inch softball a varsity sport.

Russ grew up on the Northwest Side of Chicago and played softball in the alley.

he said. “Older guys taught us how to play.

Hall of Famers taught us how to win.”

Win they did, as Russ’ teams captured several No Gloves titles.

“We used to play two, three times per week,” Russ said. “The millennials don’t want to play in league games. … I don’t regret a day of it. I met my wife, Kelly, at a park at Addison and Cicero. She played for a team called the Lushes.”

The couple recently celebrated their 23rd anniversary. They went on to have two boys and a girl.

“Sports keeps them out of trouble,” Russ said. “I quit softball to coach my sons on a traveling baseball team.”

His daughter is on a traveling soccer team. Russ’ boys went on to play baseball for Notre Dame High School.

Russ recalled making the transition from hard ball to softball, and he’s witnessed celebrities struggle to hit the 16-inch softball in charity games.

“I played with Michael Jordan, Brian Urlacher and Carlton Fisk. Fisk couldn’t hit it out of the infield,” Russ said.

Russ was recently involved in another charity event, the 8th Annual Papa Hops Tourney, featuring 36 teams along with thousands of spectators at a packed Kennedy Park on July 8. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Tom Hopkins Foundation, which supports families battling cancer.

The tournament is played in one day and the championship game took place close to midnight.

Russ sometimes hears that 16-inch softball is a dying sport. It’s mostly Chicago’s game, so out-of-state strangers are startled by the size of the ball. Russ refuses to believe the game is on its last legs. Tournaments like the Papa Hops and the No Gloves restore his faith in the future of the game.

“Softball is in our family’s blood,” Russ said. “We’ve made a lot of close friendships. It’s a big part of our lives.”

Signature a favorite to win 2022 tourney Team enters No Gloves with a 30-8 record

at Caputo, 70, has had a long illustrious career in softball. The 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame pitcher is the current manager of Signature, one of the favorites to win the No Gloves Tournament this year.

Caputo has already won the No Gloves five times, while playing for top teams like Licorice, Traffic and Windy City.

This season, Signature has won 30 games while losing only eight.

Caputo grew up in Bellwood and started playing softball in a church league in 1969.

“Bellwood is a great place to live,” Caputo said.

It’s also a great place to work. Caputo has only had two jobs in his life. Working at a liquor store on St. Charles Road and working for the village of Bellwood. He now lives in Elmhurst.

When he wasn’t working, Caputo was pitching. He pitched for the Rockers, who won the No Gloves in 1998.

“I wasn’t the greatest hitter,” Caputo confessed, “but I played good defense.”

He continued to play until 2010, when he suffered two torn rotator cuffs. Now, besides managing Signature, he runs the Melrose Park softball league.

“All the big teams play in Melrose Park,” Caputo said. They also compete in the Forest Park league.

“The No Gloves is the ultimate tournament,” Caputo said, “Many players have never won it. But the big crowds make it a

once in a lifetime experience.”

This year, Signature has a bye for the first round and will play their first game on Friday evening.

Signature Limousine is owned by Sal Milazzo, who is a big sponsor of 16inch softball. Caputo is in his 11th year of running the team. Many softball teams are sponsored by bars, which is where teams go after their games.

“We use limos instead of going to bars,” Caputo said.

Besides his involvement with the No Gloves, Caputo is a board member for the Slow-Pitch Softball Association. As a member of the SSA, he runs softball tourna-

ments. The SSA is hosting a Glove Nationals in Joliet this year.

Caputo’s teams have won the national tournament many times, but he is partial to the Forest Park tournament.

“Everyone remembers who won the No Gloves,” Caputo said.

‘Get to Sunday’ Spencer Mahoney, 29, is one of softball’s up-and-coming stars. He plays shortstop for Signature and bats second in the lineup.

Mahoney didn’t start playing softball until last summer. This year will be his second opportunity to win the No Gloves tournament.

“Our goal is to get to Sunday,” Mahoney said.

Mahoney may be a newcomer to softball but he has been playing baseball since he was 5 years old. He grew up in LaGrange

“I had to get used to no gloves and the fast pace of the game,” Mahoney said, “I had to learn a new swing, but I’ve done well this year.”

His team won the Rosemont Dome League and had decent success in the North-South Tournament and the Westchester Tournament. At Westchester, Mahoney hit a spectacular home run that cleared the fence at a field designed for 12-inch softball.

“My dad was a softball player, so I grew

up with it,” he said.

Mahoney played in the No Gloves tournament last year.

“It was very different with the level of energy -- the way the park district workers keep the fields in shape, the ‘human fence’ of spectators on Sunday,” he said.

Mahoney’s day job as a strength and conditioning coach keeps him in shape for softball. He likes Signature’s chances in the No Gloves tournament.

“We have some previous No Gloves winners on the team,” Mahoney said. “We’re in much better position to win this year.”

Former Rockers stalwart gets call to Hall of Fame Greg Ziegler is retired from softball now, but he played short center for the Rockers during their heyday. He also batted in the top five of their lineup.

Zeigler recalled the Rockers – the team Pat Caputo pitched for and won No Gloves in 1998 -- winning the No Gloves tournament in the early 1990s. He was named MVP of the tournament.

Ziegler played softball from age 17-40 and the bulk of that time was with the Rockers.

“The No Gloves is the best tournament in softball,” he said.

Ziegler is originally from Berwyn. After high school he spent two years in the Atlanta Braves minor league system as a right-handed pitcher. He made the adjustment from hardball to softball and became a power hitter. Ziegler’s playing credentials were good enough to earn him a plaque in the 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame. He will inducted on July 26.

After his playing days ended, Ziegler devoted himself to coaching his son’s traveling baseball team and his daughter’s soccer team.

“My son is a center fielder for Michigan State,” he said. “My daughter played Division II soccer.”

Like many children of former players, they also enjoy softball.

Hall of Fame induction ceremony set for July 26 Effort to recruit younger, more diverse players to help lead

aul J. Rowan was elected president of the 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame in December 2021 and is serving a three-year term. He is looking forward to the Annual Inductee Day on Tuesday, July 26. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. and the unveiling of plaques will be at 5:30 p.m. Seven players, six teams and one manager are among those being inducted.

Following the awards, the legends game will begin at 6 p.m. The three-inning exhibition will be followed by the No Gloves play-in games. Two teams will square off at 8 p.m. for a shot at qualifying for the No Gloves. The winner will play a second game at 9:15 to secure a tournament berth.

The Hall of Fame Museum will be open and stay open throughout the tournament.

Rowan noted that the Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization.

“My responsibilities include continuing to raise funds to preserve the game and keeping up the museum,” he said. “I also want to expand the game to more city parks. We need to get the game to the African American and Hispanic communities.”

Rowan is pleased that there are more Black members of the board, which includes the newest one, Kendall “P-Funk” Greene.

“We also need more women and Hispanics on the board,” he said.

Each board member takes their turn at manning the museum on Saturdays, in addition to raising funds for the Hall of Fame.

“We’re forming an Ambassador Board to promote the Hall of Fame,” Rowan said.

“We’re recruiting younger members, who can relate to the younger players.”

A case in point would be one of the newest members, Jeremy Lofrano. He becomes the youngest board member at the age of 42.

“My goal is leave a good board in place for the next president,” said Rowan.

Rowan grew up in the Beverly neighbor-

hood of Chicago and started playing softball in eighth grade. He went on to Mount Carmel High School, where he played football. After graduation, he continued to play at Kennedy Park, the site of the recent Papa Hops Tournament.

“I started the Ringers in 1983 and played for the next 20 years,” Rowan said. “We played league games five days a week and in tournaments on the weekends.”

Rowan played short center and batted toward the bottom of the lineup.

“I was a better defensive player than offensive,” he said. “I’m not very fast.”

Rowan organized his first tournament in 1985 and has been running tournaments ever since. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as an organizer in 2005. He later was inducted in 2014 as a member of the Ringers. In 2008, Rowan retired from playing softball, after receiving his second hip replacement.

Rowan is not seeing teams stick together as long as his old Ringers team.

“Teams prefer to play in their park leagues,” he said. “There are not as many major teams now.”

He is seeing more women playing softball and noted there were close to a dozen co-ed tournaments this season. There has been an increase in tournaments across the country, including in California, Arizona and Iowa. In 2019, there were 51 tournaments nationwide.

In 2022, there were 76 tournaments. This is an encouraging sign that the game is growing. More and more Americans are embracing 16-inch softball outside the Chicago area.

“Softball has stayed at the same level in Chicago,” Rowan said. “It’s already in the CPS schools, but we need to expand to the Catholic League. We want tournaments for younger players. We need to get young kids interested at an early age. South Side softball remains strong. The parks are filled on summer nights.

“The No Gloves is still the premier tournament for major teams. We also have three, four teams from Iowa coming in.

The game is growing there. It’s not enticing when the same four, five teams dominate the No Gloves.”

Rowan is pleased that this year there are no clear-cut favorites.

The Chicago 16 Inch Softball Hall of Fame was founded in 1996. It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to preserving the history, recognizing the best of the best on and off the field, and to fostering the growth of the 16 inch game. The 16 Inch Hall of Fame is located in Forest Park, IL. at the corner of D e s P l a i n e s a n d H a r r i s o n . I n d u c t e e P a r k w a s u n v e i l e d i n 2 0 0 9 a n d t h e m u s e u m o p e ne d i n 2 0 1 4 .

Since its inception, the HOF has inducted over 600 former and current softball men and women players, umpires, managers, fans, teams and organizers at annual dinners averaging 500 attendees.

Come see our historical photos, videos, uniforms, artifacts and interactive displays on Saturdays from noon to 4pm; with extended hours during the Forest Park Tournament. Always looking for memorabilia, sponsors, and donors; support will allow us to add displays and be open longer.
