Where did those fallout shelter signs come from? Origins of two signs at The Altenheim remain unclear
By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter
There are two signs screwed onto the exteriors walls of The Altenheim retirement home, 7824 Madison St., reading
“fallout shelter” with the familiar black circle and three downward pointing yellow triangles. Tim Flanagan, The Altenheim’s head of maintenance, said Forest Parkers sometimes ask him to see the shelters, a relic of the Cold War, when many Americans thought a
nuclear war with the Soviet Union was imminent. There’s just one problem — Flanagan has no idea where the shelters, if they exist, are located. See FALLOUT on page 6

The Chicago Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL) lost its founder, John Martin, in May. Now, Martin’s daughters, Sarah Lorenzi and Katie Martin, are carrying on his work with at-risk students from alternative high schools. They held their annual softball tournament July 19 at the Park. Over 100 teenage boys and girls turned the proceedings into a lovefest of high-fives and handing out sportsmanship ribbons. Each game ended with the players gathered in a compliment circle. As with all CAAEL sporting events, it’s how you play the game. See CAAEL on page 1
