Where did those fallout shelter signs come from? Origins of two signs at The Altenheim remain unclear

By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

There are two signs screwed onto the exteriors walls of The Altenheim retirement home, 7824 Madison St., reading

“fallout shelter” with the familiar black circle and three downward pointing yellow triangles. Tim Flanagan, The Altenheim’s head of maintenance, said Forest Parkers sometimes ask him to see the shelters, a relic of the Cold War, when many Americans thought a

nuclear war with the Soviet Union was imminent. There’s just one problem — Flanagan has no idea where the shelters, if they exist, are located. See FALLOUT on page 6

The Chicago Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL) lost its founder, John Martin, in May. Now, Martin’s daughters, Sarah Lorenzi and Katie Martin, are carrying on his work with at-risk students from alternative high schools. They held their annual softball tournament July 19 at the Park. Over 100 teenage boys and girls turned the proceedings into a lovefest of high-fives and handing out sportsmanship ribbons. Each game ended with the players gathered in a compliment circle. As with all CAAEL sporting events, it’s how you play the game. See CAAEL on page 1

To boost brain power, rook no further

hess has been a passion for me since I learned the game as a kid. But as an adult, it’s difficult to find a game. So, I was pleased to learn the library has a summer chess program for kids. It’s led by Mike Stegar every Wednesday. The night I went there were five players, ranging in age from 8 to 12. I thought they’d be easy pickings but they played better than expected. I had 10-year-old Aiden on the ropes, I thought, until he suddenly checkmated me. I then played his 12-year-old sister, Bella. It was her first-ever chess game but she quickly learned how to move the pieces. Too quickly. We both lost our queens early and settled for a draw. I finally played Mike. I again lost my queen right away and resigned. Thus humbled, I marveled at how Mike runs the program. He monitors multiple games to point out errors and give tips. He is very patient and upbeat. He also promotes sportsmanship, having opponents shake hands before every game. Unlike his players at the library, Mike discovered chess later in life. As a teacher at Naperville Central High School, Mike was suddenly recruited to be the coach of the chess team. Mike wasn’t a chess player but wandered into the library to watch a match.

Despite his inexperience, Mike became a successful coach, with his team placing near the top in the Illinois state finals, the biggest high school tournament in the country. It’s a challenge harnessing the logic of the eight-member squad. The players have advanced IQ’s and tend to question everything. Mike doesn’t teach them strategy, as much as he cheers them on. They can get easily discouraged or, worse, get down on a teammate. His team continues to get stronger, with a highly-rated freshman coming in the fall. Mike said there isn’t much socializing in competitive chess but the leisure chess they play at the library allows for plenty of concon versation. Mike teaches them how to set up the board, how the pieces move and the basic principles of chess. Then he moves onto strategy. Learning chess can be beneficial to kids, improving their learning, foresight, discipline and self-confiself-confi dence. They memorize openings and learn basic problemsolving. Based on the laughs and excited voices at the library, they also have fun.

JOHN RICE

I had 10-year-

old Aiden on the ropes, I thought, until he suddenly checkmated me.

The library supplies the chess sets and paid Mike a modest stipend but he’s definitely not doing it for the money. Teaching the game gets him ready to face his next chess season at the high school. It begins in October with a 26-team tournament that takes ten hours. It ends in February, with the IHSA tournament in Peoria. This is high-level chess but pales compared to the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen. The 26-year-old can defeat 10 grandmasters at the same time with his back to the chessboards. Mike greatly admires Carlsen but isn’t trying to train grand grandmasters at the library. He takes an easy going ap approach, occasionally asking players to put down their phones, or the snack that’s distracting them. One of the beneficiaries of his gentle guidance is his eight-year-old daughter, Hillary. If I compete there again, I’ll play Hillary — but only after I hand her a phone and a snack. ■ John Rice is a columnist/ private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. Council reconfigures permitting and inspection fees Commissioners unanimously approved changes to village code July 24 By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

The Forest Park Village Council unanimously approved an ordinance at its July 24 meeting revamping several sections of village code, including language on compliance, ownership transfers and permitting and inspection costs. The July 24 approval comes about six months after Village Administrator Tim Gillian tasked Director of Public Health and Safety Steve Glinke and his staff with examining current regulations. Some, Glinke said, hadn’t been updated since 2003. “This is an update to our pricing for permitting fees and inspections,” Commissioner Tom Mannix said “Some of them were archaic in nature in terms of trying to figure out exactly how to contemplate what a fee would be.” Previously, village code spelled out a fee

structure based on cubic feet. So, for instance a resident wanting to get a permit for a new garage on a single-family home would be charged “$3 per 100 cubic feet or fraction thereof.” Now, that same resident would be charged $15 for every thousand dollars of construction costs. This change, Glinke said, is more consistent with other parts of village code. In some cases, fees went up. An inspection for an individual condo now costs $25 more, up from $200. In other instances, the increase was much more significant. An inspection for a 10- to 20-unit building now costs $1,500. Before July 24, it was $850 for a 10-unit building, with an additional $40 for every unit. An industrial building inspection now costs $1,500, up from $1,000. “There are some minor increases in here,” Mannix said. “But most importantly, is what we did is that we spent a lot of time figuring

out how to reduce the cost to homeowners in the village so that they could actually do home improvements and not have to bear too much of a burden getting inspections and getting permits and things from the village.” Glinke, in a July 26 phone call, concurred. “We really geared most of the increases toward commercial and income-properties in an effort to provide some relief to singlefamily dwellings, to families,” Glinke said. “The increases we’re pretty evenhanded and certainly intended not to create any sticker shock with any homeowners.” Mannix, at the July 24 meeting, praised village staff for their work on the changes. Mayor Anthony Calderone agreed. “Sounds like a good job by everyone,” Calderone said. “Hopefully, it works well with the department and the residents,” Commissioner Dan Novak said.

Local retailers fume over drink tax Court allows tax on soft drinks as of Aug. 2 By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

A Cook County judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Illinois Retail Merchants Association (IRMA) aimed at stopping a 1-cent-per-ounce tax on sugary beverages. With that action on July 28, the tax will go into effect on Aug. 2, according to a press release from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. None of this is sitting well with local retailers charged with collecting a complex tax. Joe Salamone, owner of Fair Share Finer Foods on Roosevelt Road in Oak Park, said July 31 he is disappointed by the court’s decision. “It’s not good for business. It’s not practical for the average store to implement.” Salamone said. “It’s gonna drive people to go and shop in the next county.” Salamone said he’s spent about $6,000 on new software and equipment prepping to comply with the tax. “It’s not a sales tax,” Salamone said. “You have to implement it by the ounce. We need to upgrade all our computers.” Mike Nutley, one of the owners of Ed’s Way in Forest Park, was similarly frustrated when reached by phone July 31. “They are just going to shove it down our throats,” Nutley said, referring to the Cook County Board of Commissioners. “I’m flustered with the whole thing. I’ve really become aggravated.” Nutley’s store, which does participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), can register as a “distributor” and avoid paying the tax upfront. But that option, which Cook County announced in mid-June, ends after one year, in July 2018. It is unclear what stores like Nutley’s will do after. As reported by the Review at the time, before June 16, retailers like Nutley had worried about cash flow problems. According to the original text of the ordinance, distributors, like PepsiCo. Inc., would have charged independent grocers for the tax at the “back door” when they delivered shipments, even if those products are never bought or if they are bought by a SNAP participant. SNAP purchases are exempt from the tax. If a customer uses SNAP to buy a sweetened beverage, the grocer must keep track of each individual product purchase, in-

cluding the vendor, to request a refund on the beverage tax. This process, Nutley said at the time, would have been cumbersome and would have required significant staff time to tabulate daily sweetened product sales broken down by vendor, just to recoup money paid upfront by retailers The July 28 ruling comes about a month after the new tax, passed in November 2016, was to be implemented. That decision is the latest twist in a weeks-long legal battle.

File photo

The IRMA filed for a temporary restraining order on June 27, arguing the tax violated the Illinois Constitution and was too vague. A Cook County Circuit Court granted the order on June 30. A subsequent appeal by the county was dismissed on July 10. “We are disappointed with today’s ruling,” Rob Karr, president and CEO of IRMA, said in a press release. “We are exploring all legal options.” “We believed all along that our ordinance was carefully drafted and met pertinent constitutional tests,” Preckwinkle said in the Cook County press release. “The delay in implementing the tax caused by the merchants’ lawsuit forced us to put into motion cost-saving measures to cope with this revenue loss, which currently is at least $17 million. Until we are able to fully implement and collect revenues from this tax, we will continue to review our financial position and make adjustments accordingly.” Preckwinkle went on to say retailers should have been prepared for the tax, which passed in November 2016. The statement did not acknowledge the multiple clarifications the county has issued since its passage. When asked by the Review in an email if IRMA plans to appeal the ruling, Ryan McLaughlin, an IRMA spokesperson, wrote, “Our statement speaks of itself.”

FALLOUT

Signs’ origins still unknown from page 1 “I’m like ‘fallout shelters? What fallout shelters?’” Flanagan told the Review July 25. “Different people ask me where they are at. There’s not a basement in either building.” The federal government initiated a program in 1961 called the National Fallout Shelter Survey. Its purpose was to find and designate sites for shelters across the country. A July 1967 Chicago Tribune article says Cook County had roughly 2,500 shelters. And there is another twist: an April 1963 clip from the Forest Park Review lists 11 Forest Park sites identified by the U.S. Army engineers as fallout shelter locations, including The Altenheim, referred to in the clip as the “German old peoples home,” at the same Madison Street address. “The buildings are considered strong enough to provide some protection,” the clip reads. Ferrara Candy Co., 7301 Harrison St., the Forest Park Post Office, 417 Desplaines Ave., and Forest Paint Co. 7240 W. Franklin, now condos, are among the sites listed. But, importantly, the clip only reference’s The Altenheim’s selection as a site; it does not report the shelter’s specific location on the property or if it was actually installed. Flanagan has reviewed some of The Altenheim’s architectural drawings stored in the attic and found no indication of a basement. And in his own six-year experience as head of maintenance, he hasn’t stumbled upon on one either. “I wouldn’t even know where to look for a hidden door to a basement.” Flanagan did suggest one alternate theory: the two signs are left over set pieces from a Hollywood film shot, in part,

CAAEL has helped me as a person in a very good way.” “I’m a different person because of CAAEL,” said Jason Hajdas, echoing his teammate. “I used to get angry if I did badly. I don’t worry about that now.” Hajdas had some pleasant dealings with Martin over the years. \ “I was sorry to hear John Martin passed away,” Hajdas said. “He was a good guy. He loved telling people how good they were. He loved giving out awards. He was an amazing person.” Jonathan Hamerman attends school in Romeoville and has been in CAAEL for four years. “It gives me a great opportunity to play sports,” Hamerman said, recalling Martin giving him a sportsmanship trophy after a basketball game. “It has built my character and sportsmanship. Win, or lose, I still feel good about it. I really appreciated him. I’m happy that he started this program.” Ariana Ramp goes to school with Hamerman and has been in CAAEL for three

the filmmakers converted The Altenheim into a American military base in Berlin, “complete with vintage Audis and U.S. Jeeps parked outside,” according to a December 1988 Forest Park Review clip. Indeed, during one scene in the film, the brick walkway connecting the two residential buildings can be seen; the fallout sign is there, too. But, Andrew Davis, the film’s director, couldn’t recall the signs as part of the movie set when reached by phone July 26. “They were there,” Davis said, referring to the signs. “In those days, everybody had them. They were on public schools, any place.” Davis wasn’t absolutely certain his crew didn’t install the signs but added “I doubt it.” In an email to the Review, Maher Ahmad, one of the film’s set designers, wrote “Sorry, I don’t know the answer; it was a long time ago!” The film’s other set designer, William B. Fosser, died in 2006 according to IMDB, a movie industry website. Flanagan did say it’s possible the shelter signs refer to something other than an underground structure, such as an interior hallway. But, one of the signs, on a second-floor walkway connecting two of the residential buildings, lists the shelter’s capacity at over 300. There isn’t space, Flanagan said, for that THOMAS VOGEL/Staff many people in an interior room or hallway. Flanagan said there is a 3-foot-by-3-foot subterMYSTERY: The origins of two signs at The Altenheim remain unclear. ranean crawl space that rings one of the buildings but it is cramped and has steam pipes and on site in the late 1980s. “The Package,” a political thriller electrical wiring — hardly a safe space to shelter set during the Cold War, stars Gene Hackman as a U.S. Army in the aftermath of a nuclear strike. years. “I’m a very sportsy person,” Ramp said I’m not a shopping mall girl. Before I joined CAAEL, I was very angry with myself and other people. I was very intense and competitive. I was there to win!” Martin first encountered students like Ramp at Scalabrinian Education Center, in Stone Park, when he was teaching there in 1976. These students had been removed from their public schools for a variety of behavioral and emotional issues, such as truancy, depression, drugs and violence. Martin organized a basketball team but they had no opponents. Then, a student asked, “Aren’t there any other kids like us at other schools who we could play?” His innocent question led to the birth of CAAEL. It started out with four schools competing in basketball and grew to 26 schools by 1998. In 2006, CAAEL had 40 schools participating in the program and it continues to grow in popularity. “We now have 55 schools in 30 Illinois counties,” said Lorenzi, who took over as CAAEL President, following her dad’s death. “We have schools from Woodstock to Joliet.” CAAEL currently has 5,000 students in the program. Lorenzi estimated that CAAEL has helped 100,000 students over the past 40 years. The reason for its success was Martin’s simple business plan. “It grew organically,” Lorenzi said. “My

dad didn’t solicit schools.” CAAEL also kept overhead low by using existing school sports facilities and transportation. “Now, CAAEL is a selling point for these schools,” Lorenzi said. CAAEL somehow serves all of these students on a shoestring budget of $160,000. It helped their bottom line, when the Park District donated the use of its fields for the softball tournament. The Park District later donated proceeds from the tip jars at the No Gloves tournament to CAAEL. The Park is catching the CAAEL spirit, as well as the volunteers who helped with the softball tournament. Richard Biggins was flipping burgers for the kids and credited John Martin for inspiring him to start Empowering Gardens, a Forest Park non-profit that serves adults with disabilities. Martin’s advice was simple and effective, “Just do it.” Martin grew up on the west side of Chicago and attended St. Philip’s High School. He went on to Loyola University and earned his Master’s Degree in English at Northeastern Illinois University. He worked as a high school teacher and principal, before launching CAAEL. “He was motivated to start it, because he was teaching disruptive kids,” Lorenzi said. “It started with intramural basketball at OPRF. It was a motivator for the kids to get involved in healthy activities.” Some of the CAAEL students are wards of the state, others suffer from disabilities. “They come from diverse backgrounds,”

Lorenzi said. “And they become role models in their schools.” Lorenzi was teaching at Longfellow School in Oak Park, when she felt the call to help her father at CAAEL. He was single-handedly running the operation out of his Forest Park home. Though she is still recovering from his loss, she’s determined to carry on his legacy. Her younger sister, Katie, is equally dedicated, coming on board as an administrator. “We also hired a part-time programmer, Marty Knuth,” Lorenzi said, “Because it’s just too much for one person.” This will free up Lorenzi to be the CAAEL spokesperson. Lorenzi applies for grants to keep CAAEL’s cost-effective program running. The organization also holds fundraisers, like its annual Band-aThon in Forest Park. She encourages people to visit the CAAEL website and Facebook page. “I think the biggest thing is mentioning CAAEL to a friend, or family member.” Lorenzi said. “It’s been great and really helps us, since we don’t have a marketing person on staff — yet.” Lastly, Lorenzi presented a hand-written essay by a CAAEL student. “It’s not about how many games you win. It’s not about how many points you score. It’s about having fun in the right way, meeting new people and helping your team win the Sportsmanship Trophy!”

There is, according to the police report, no “offender information.” ■ Someone smashed the rear window of a white 2011 BMW parked on the 7700 block of Yuba Street sometime between 7:30 p.m. July 28 and 1 a.m. on July 29. Cost of repairs was unknown at the time the police report was filed.

Motor vehicle theft ■ Chicago police found a stolen 2016 white HINO truck on the 500 block of Ridgeway around 9 a.m. on July 24. Earlier that day, sometime between 5:30 and 8 a.m., the truck was taken from the Enterprise Car Rental lot, 7630 Roosevelt Road. The truck was unlocked and the keys were inside, according to the police report. A Broadview company was renting the truck at the time of the theft. No damage to the vehicle was reported. ■ Someone stole a 1993 Dodge sedan parked on the 1100 block of Lathrop Avenue between 5 p.m. on July 29 and 2:30 a.m. on July 30. No arrest has been made.

Auto burglary ■ Someone

smashed the rear passenger window of a Nissan Altima on the 1100 block of Troost Avenue sometime between 11:30 p.m. on July 23 and noon on July 24. The car’s owner, a 28-year-old Forest Parker, said her work bag, which had been in the back seat, was found next to the car. Nothing was reported missing. ■ Someone took loose change from two unlocked parked cars in an alley on the 500 block of Thomas Avenue sometime on the night of July 26. Nothing else was reported missing.

Theft ■ A 46-year-old man was arrested July 25 around 6 p.m. after trying to steal a $1,000, 55-inch television from Walmart, 1300 Desplaines Ave. According to the report, the man walked into Walmart, opened the television’s box, removed the security tag, went

to the customer service desk, and tried to return the TV. But customer service reps asked for a receipt, which the 46-year-old didn’t have. He then walked out of the store with the television without paying. He, with the help of another man, put the television in a 2014 Buick and drove off. ■ Roughly $2,500 worth of work materials, including ladders and scaffolding, were taken from the front yard of a home on the 7600 block of Adams Street sometime between July 23 around 2 p.m. and 8 a.m. on July 24. ■ An unknown man stole a black backpack with about $3,300 worth of electronics in it from a 29-year-old Chicago man on July 27 around 8 a.m. The man reportedly approached the 29-year-old and asked for a cigarette. A few minutes later, the 29-yearold “turned his back to his black backpack sitting on the ground” and the man grabbed it and ran off. ■ A man, described in the police report on the incident, as “homeless,” reportedly took $500 and a Samsung cell phone from a 31-year-old Forest Park woman on July 27 around 2:30 a.m. The man, according to the report, approached the 31-year-old and another friend, near an alley behind the 7400 block Madison Street and asked for money. The 31-year-old woman put her “backpackpurse down to give this person a dollar” and the man reportedly grabbed it and started running. No arrest has been made. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park police department, July 24-30, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Forest Parker arrested for bank robbery attempt 27-year-old man told teller family member had gambling problem By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

Andrew Johnston, 27, of Forest Park, was arrested July 25 for allegedly attempting to rob Byline Bank, 4600 Harlem Ave., in Harwood Heights. According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Johnston, wearing a black mask, hoodie, gloves and hat with the word “Security” on it, walked into the bank and told a teller, “Don’t press any buttons. Get closer. Put your hands up. This is a robbery.” Johnston then reportedly told the teller members of his family had been kidnapped and a sibling had gambling problems. The teller, according to the complaint, then looked at a nearby driveby window and realized a customer was

there holding up a cellphone, motioning if the teller “needed the customer to call police.” The teller nodded. Johnston reportedly noticed the customer with the cell phone and left the bank without taking any money. The customer at the drive-through window saw Johnston exit the bank and took down his license plate number, which he then gave to police. Johnston was stopped a short time later by Harwood Heights police. Police searched the car, which was reportedly registered to Johnston’s girlfriend, and found a black hoodie, two black gloves, and a black hat with “Security” on it. According to the complaint, Johnston was identified by the tellers, to whom he apologized from an FBI vehicle, using the microphone of the drive-thru.

Hannah Avenue construction slowed

Village says project two weeks behind schedule By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

The Hannah Avenue resurfacing and water main replacement is about two weeks behind schedule, Public Works Director John Doss said July 27. Unexpected rain and a few unforeseen breaks in the existing water main pipe caused the delay, Doss said. The village has notified residents on the 400 and 500 blocks of Hannah Avenue, as well as District 91 officials. Some of the construction is happening in front of Garfield Elementary School, which sits on the northwest corner of Jackson Boulevard and Hannah Avenue. The project’s original “substantial completion” date was Aug. 18, according to the proposal approved June 26 by the Forest Park Village Council. The first day of school is set for Aug. 21. “There [were] seven or eight days lost, working days,” Doss said. “We’ve been

working non-stop, we’re catching up.” “I do appreciate the village giving us a heads up,” District 91 Supt. Lou Cavallo said July 26. “The village is being very cooperative and helpful.” Cavallo said the district will keep parents informed throughout the process, including through social media and the school system’s website. Garfield will still be open for kindergarten screenings and school registration as planned over the next three weeks. There will not be parking on Hannah Avenue during registration, Cavallo said. He encouraged parents to walk, if possible. “That’s the best option,” Cavallo said. The Hannah Avenue work is part of the village’s 2017 Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) Resurfacing Project. Crews are also working on Washington Street from Harlem Avenue to Marengo Avenue. The village council selected J.A. Johnson Paving for the $826,939 project June 26.

Political advocacy group folds Vox disbands after 13-year run

By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

Vox, formerly known as Citizens United in Forest Park, announced in a July 22 Facebook post that the community group was disbanding after 13 years of local activism. Steve Backman, one of the group’s board members and the post’s author, would not go on the record answering any questions, including why the group decided to shutter, when reached by phone July 28. “…Many say Vox introduced the practice of active citizenry to our village,” Backman wrote in the Facebook post. “So at this milestone, Vox is formally announcing the end of the organization, a decision we discussed at last year›s general meeting. The post quickly received at least a dozen likes and several comments. “Thank you to your amazing commitment to democracy!!!” Forest Parker and Proviso Township High Schools Board of Education member Claudia Medina wrote. “We are all better, growing and committed to our town, with transparency and progressive initiatives thanks to all the work you have done. We are so grateful for your inspiration for future endeavors!! You live in our towns

heart beat!” “I remember when video of public meetings was cutting edge - thanks to Vox, it is now standard practice,” Ken Snyder wrote. “Thanks for all the work that Vox has done!” Backman, in the July 22 post, highlighted some of the group’s efforts since its inception in spring 2004, including voter registration, candidate forums and fundraisers. In a February 2014 opinion piece in the Forest Park Review Backman wrote “Vox is already getting its stuff together for the next 10 years and the outlook is bright.” As reported by the Review at the time, in

2005, the Elmhurst-based Citizens Advocacy Center (CAC) gave the group, then known as Citizens United in Forest Park, a citizen’s initiative award. “What we do gets us labeled as crackpots or wise guys,” Backman said at the time. “It was nice to get recognized by like-minded people all fighting the same struggle in dif different towns.”

OPINION O U R

V I E W

Honoring CUiFP

A

s Forest Park whirls at the core of the grassroots effort to rejuvenate the Proviso Township high schools, as its new Diversity Commission recently urged forward a Welcoming Resolution, as a progressive citizens group organizes on Facebook and a green movement seeks its footing to get organized, it is the moment to celebrate and rue the shuttering of Vox, Forest Park’s original ground-up political advocacy group. Better known over most of its 13 years as Citizens United in Forest Park (CUiFP), Vox quietly folded its diminished tent in a Facebook post on July 22. Steve Back Backman, a founder of the group, oddly declined to comment beyond the FB announcement. That won’t stop us though from linking today’s refreshing and startling level of local political activism to the founding days of Vox. In a village stuck in its cloister of old families and intenseintense ly suspicious of critics, Vox brought a bright light and a healthy skepticism to local government. This being Forest Park, the response to Vox was peculiarly personal and over the top. From day one, the motivations of its small band of active citizens were questioned at the top of village hall, leaders Steve and Gloria Backman were derided and demonized for the sin of being active, alert and sometimes critical citizens. Simple efforts at transparency such as video recording village meetings were taken as threats. Plans to hold debates and discussions of local issues were seen as undermining the powers that be. In 2005, CUiFP was honored by the Citizens Advocacy Center in Elmhurst for its ongoing good government work. Steve Backman’s comment at the time was, “What we do gets us labeled as crackpots or wise guys. It was nice to get recognized by like-minded people all fighting the same struggle in different towns.” With its announced closing, a number of the current generation of local activists expressed their strong thanks to Vox for absorbing the toxins and the anger which came its way. Our sense, our hope is that the anti-activist fever has broken in Forest Park. Perhaps the over the top fury of the video gaming debate made plain that turning Forest Parkers against each other is not an honorable path forward; maybe seeing the powerful good of the Proviso Together movement impacting Forest Park’s most intractable problem; maybe seeing the energy and joy of the Welcoming Resolution’s embrace of diversity has opened our eyes to new possibilities. We look forward to that same activist energy and sense of purpose in the village elections now less than two years away. Let the energy bloom, let the fears fade. And let’s say thanks to the oft-scorned leaders of CUiFP. You did good.

Different realities hit home for Pastor Mitty

P

astor Walter Mitty leaned over to Trudi Becker during coffee hour after last Sunday’s service and whispered, “Is something going on between Eric and Debbie Anderson? They’re sitting on opposite sides of the room.” “Cubs and Sox,” Becker said, frowning. “Huh?” “Cubs and Sox,” Becker said again. “You know. Debbie grew up on the South Side and Eric on the North Side.” “But that’s not. . . .” “It wasn’t until last Tuesday,” Becker explained. “Tuesday?” “Yeah, Tuesday, when Lackey drilled Abreu twice and Davidson and Monca, too. Three in one inning.” “Oh, I heard about that,” Mitty said. “But didn’t Lackey say it was unintentional?” “You don’t understand, Rev,” Becker said, leaning closer to her pastor. “With those two the Cubs and the Sox are like Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer debating health care. Debbie insists that it was intentional. You don’t hit Abreu twice and not be trying.” “And I suppose Eric believes Lackey’s explanation?” “Yup.” “Sometimes I’m glad I never got married,” Mitty thought as he left Becker to greet his parishioners sitting around other tables. Monday morning, the pastor of Poplar Park Community Church woke up at 6:30 a.m. refreshed after a good night’s sleep. He made a pot of his special recipe coffee — half donut shop blend and half French roast — washed the dishes and decided to take a walk downtown along Main Street. Zaphne’s Retro shop wasn’t open yet but the door to the army surplus store was ajar to take advantage of the cool morning air. “Well look who’s here,” said Sarge, the owner, with a grin. “I didn’t think your liberal friends would let you come in here.” “Come on, Sarge,” Mitty said, blushing. “You know I’m an independent.” “I know,” Sarge said. “But I have to give you a hard time every once in a while.” Mitty could see the shoulder to wrist ink on Sarge’s left arm which he’d gotten while in Vietnam. Mitty kind of liked the guy, even though he had made it known all over social media that he was cheering Trump on for all the executive orders he had signed. “Seriously, though,” Sarge continued, “I do think the big deal the liberals in Washington are making about the Trump campaign’s connection with Russia is typi-

cal of these so-called progressives. They don’t have a shred of evidence that the campaign did anything illegal, but they keep bringing it up over and over instead of helping pass the legislation that we need.” Mitty was about to straighten Sarge out on some facts, considered his chances of changing the guy’s mind, and decided to just say, “You might be right, but we’ll see.” As he continued down Main Street he saw Bernie Rolvaag stocking shelves in his book store, and, noting that he was not serving any customers, he walked in. “Hi Bernie,” Mitty said. “What’s happening?” “I’m so pissed off,” Rolvaag said. “Excuse my French, but Kellyanne Conway was interviewed on the news, and with a smile on her face she lied through her teeth. Can you believe it? She had the audacity to stand in front of the cameras and declare that there had been absolutely no collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians.” “But, but Bernie, they haven’t proved anything yet, have they?” Mitty said. “Oh, come on Walt,” Rolvaag said. “You and I both know that it’s just a matter of time when they’ll have enough evidence to impeach this clown we have for a president.” Pastor Mitty pretended to be listening to the bookstore owner, but in his mind he was going back to the 1958 World Series. The year before the Milwaukee Braves had beaten the New York Yankees four games to three. His dad had taken him and his brother Harman to County Stadium twice that summer to watch Hank Aaron and Eddie Matthews, Joe Adcock and Billy Bruton pursue their quest for a second National League pennant. He remembered anxiously listening to game seven on the radio. Bob Turley was on the mound for the Yankees and “fidgety” Lou Burdette was pitching for the Braves. Burdette had pitched against Turley in game two and the Braves had won 13-5, but this time the tables were turned and the Yankees won 6-2. He and his dad had both felt like the world had come to an end. He knew what it was like to attach your emotional well-being to the fortunes of a baseball team, and he still felt some pain at how the Gore had won the popular vote but Bush nevertheless was inaugurated that January. He hadn’t taken sides with anyone but he had wanted to. On the way home, the thought about Eric and Debbie having a silly argument about two baseball teams and two merchants on Main Street who viewed “reality” through such different glasses that they couldn’t even agree on what they facts were. And as he walking a wave of foreboding swept over him.

t’s that time of year again — block parties. The 600 block of Beloit Avenue has always had a famous one and this year was even more spectacular. The date was changed because a prominent family on the block is moving — to Peru! Sarah, Chuck and Journey Alvarado will be leaving this week for a two-year stint in the shadow of Machu Pichu. They will be sorely missed by their neighbors and everyone hopes they will eventually return to Forest Park. The plan is to find another faraway place to spend another two years before returning. By the time Journey is a bit older, she will have had the experience of living in several different cultures, learning several languages and making friends with people of different ways of life. Wonderful! Get well wishes to Lucy Gianelli who wasn’t able to make the party since she was recovering at Rush Hospital in Oak Park. Her husband Joe was on hand greeting everyone and acting much like his old self. May Bill was the queen of the day as usual. The 97-year-old was still serving up her special recipe of baked beans along with her morning tea, lemonade or whatever your pleasure. Two lifelong friends Scarlett Strickland and Ana Rrahmani will soon be parting because Scarlett is moving. The two girls have been together daily since Scarlett was born. Ana is four years old, Scarlet is three.
