Village to replace security cameras at Community Center

Will add cameras to Public Works building, water pumping stations

Forest Park Village Council unanimously approved a contract to not only re place aging and malfunctioning security cameras at the village facilities, but also add security cameras to municipal buildings that don’t currently have them.

This has been a long-term priority for the village. In a memo to Village Administrator Moses Amidei, Police Chief Ken Gross said security cameras in village hall and the police station complex, 517 Desplaines Ave., are out of date, and one of the police station cameras isn’t working. He also wrote that the security cameras at the Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd., “are not functioning properly,” and the village can’t view the live feed due to a technical issue.

The contract also includes putting in cameras at the Public Works building, 7343 W. 15th St., and the pump stations that store and distribute the drinking water Forest Park gets from Chicago. The council awarded the See

Forest Park cigar lounge moves to Maywood

Owner says new location will have more space, dedicated parking

Casa de Puros, a cigar lounge that has been a mainstay of Madison Street in Forest Park for the past 15 years, is moving to Maywood.

The staf f was busy packing boxes and loading them onto a moving van when this newspaper interviewed co-owner Greg Walker on July 31. He insisted they were moving because the Maywood space at 1117 S. 1st Ave. is larger, has two outdoor patios and its own dedicated parking lot. The fact that it’s also a free-standing building that he and his co-owners bought outright, as opposed to leasing, helped as well.

Walker said he expects to finish moving out of the Forest Park space by the end of the week. He plans to reopen at the Maywood location on Se pt. 15.

Casa De Puros, which means “House of Cigars” in Spanish, opened on the ground floor of a condominium building at 7410 Madison St. in 2008. Co-owner Tim Polk

was interested in opening a shop where customers could buy and smoke ci Since then, the building has been modified, getting large display windows that are open during the summer. Polk previously described the shop as a “classic bachelor club style” establishment, deep leather chairs, dark wood-paneled walls, a marble fireplace and ample ashtrays.

Since then, the ownership shifted several times. By 2020, it was co-owned lienne Tooles and Brandon Prince, with Walker, of Chicago’s Galewood neighbo hood, originally coming in to provide financing. The Illinois Secretary of State filing currently lists Walker as the sole owner.

Casa de Puros struggled through the COVID-19 pandemic, surviving on federal economic support programs. Business has since rebounded.

Polk is Black, and so is Walker. Customers previously told this newspaper African-Americans account for about thirds of the re gular customer base.

According to Forest Park police records, Casa de Puros was cited six times for selling cigars to underaged customers, with the last three citations made in 2022. It was cited twice for allowing customers to drink alcohol outside in 2018 and 2021.

Forest Park police chief Ken Gross also said that his department “received complaints in the past about Casa De Puros and neighboring Murphy’s/Lantern Haus patrons consuming alcohol on the public way and those on motorcycles playing loud music as they were coming to and/or leaving the business.”

Walker said the move was simply about having more room to grow.

“We’ re moving to a bigger and better place,” he said. “We appreciate the opportunities that Forest Park gave us.”

The Maywood building has seen several

uses over the years, most recently housing the Shrimp Spot restaurant. The new space is nearly three times bigger than the current location. The staf f plans to take advantage of the existing patio in the front, and there is room for another patio in the back.

Dr. Kevin O’Mara, an associate professor at Concordia University, said he’s been coming to Casa de Puros since it opened. He said a new location won’t change that.

“[The other re gulars] are my friends,” O’Mara said. “It’s a great atmosphere, everybody is welcome. A lot of us have been here for each other though the loss of friends and loved ones. We’re always there for each other. [The new Maywood location] is a great space, and we’re excited about the new opportunity.”

A ‘Measure’ ark Theatre

Free performances of ‘Measure for Measure’ start this week

The Forest Park Theatre is continuing its mission of bringing professional productions to the community by presenting Measure for Measure at The Grove at Altenheim. Shakespeare wrote the play during a time of political strife, which makes the play relevant to modern audiences. As Director Rick Corley said, the play’s provocative themes are, “Wrapped in the most incredible poetry in the English language.”

When Corley moved to Forest Park, he fell in love with the community but wondered why it had no theater. That is why he founded one and drew on his experience as a professor of Advanced Acting – Shakespeare at UIC. The theater’s first production was As You Like It at the Roos Recreation Center proper ty.

Mayor Rory Hoskins attended two performances and suggested the theater relocate its productions to the village owned Altenheim property. Corley found Altenheim to be much quieter and put on a production of Innogen in 2022. The pl ay was a success, even without sets. The village council also became the theatre’s lead sponsor with a grant of $10,000.

“Arts are a gift to the community,” Corley said, “And the community responds with support.” This year’s production is a community ef fort in every respect. To help raise the necessary $25,000 to pay the actors and stage the play, the theater held a

fundraiser at Piacere Mio restaurant that netted $4,500. They also received donations from local businesses.

Kevin Hibbets and his crew donated

their time to assemble the sets. J.C. Licht donated $500 of paint to decorate them. The stands for the audience were provided by the Park District. Twisted Cookie and

Brown Cow will be selling refreshments and Exit Strategy is providing picnic packages for patrons to purchase.

Kevin Leonard, who operates Leonard Creativeworks in Forest Park, produced the striking images of the lead actors. Christine Westphal Barnard, a member of the Forest Park Arts Alliance, plastered the posters Leonard produced all over town. She also helped distribute cards that contained the play’s synopsis. “Debauchery. Romance. Hypocrisy.” is the title of this summary.

“I love Measure for Measure,” said Corley, “It’s about a city out of control and the difference between justice and the law.” There is also a ‘Me-Too’ theme with a powerful man coercing a young nun into sacrificing her virginity.”

Corley recruited Chicago actors for the production, including some of his current and for mer students.

Measure for Measure will give many of these students their first opportunity to perform in a professional production. The cast was given their scripts to study in June and rehearsals began after the 4th of July.

The company rehearsed at Altenheim to get acclimated to performing outdoors, with the noise and heat. Performances will be Aug. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at 5 p.m. Admission is free, in keeping with a worldwide tradition of presenting free Shakespeare during the summer. “Before every performance, we welcome donations from the audience. We also list donors on the program.”

While keeping theater alive in Forest Park, Corley dreams of someday finding a permanent home and becoming a theater for the entire re gion.

Volunteers make No Gloves tourney happen

Years of experience turn the annual event into a community reunion

Once you get Roy Sansone talking about the Park District of Forest Park (PDOFP), after a minute or two you’ll have the distinct impression he loves the place, every inch of it — from the Roos Center in the shadow of the Circle Bridge to the No Gloves museum just east of Desplaines Avenue

Sansone has started his fourth 6-year ter m as park commissioner and was out there Thursday in the 90-degree heat working on the grill line. His affection for The Park was shared by the 100-plus volunteers who made the tournament happen.

Sandy Byrnes has volunteered at the No Gloves Tourney for 30 years. She showed her affection for both The Park and the tournament by making two quilts, one of which was given to Larry Piekarz when he retired as park director and the other, made from 45 No Gloves T-shirts, was raffled off in a fundraiser

Three of the four guys — Dave Novak, Bob Dowdle and Cliff Evitt — working the grills in the 90-degree heat last Thursday have logged a total of 66 years cooking sausages, hamburgers, chicken and tacos in the back of the concessions tent.

Cliff’s son, Trevor Reis-Evitt, said he was “in his mother’s stomach” when he came to his first tournament. Following in his father’s footsteps, this was his second year on the grill line. Dad has specialized in making tacos

Dowdle said one reason they keep coming back to volunteer every year is that they all have fun. He turned from his grill, mopped his forehead with a towel and said, “It actually is fun with the guys back here on the grills and listening to some music. If you come back tomorrow, you’ll get a joke out of Joe Byr nes. He’s the resident comedian.”

Motivation for the thousands who attend the tournament every year is partly to watch quality 16-inch softball games but also to meet longtime friends at what Karrie Schlichting, the PDOFP volunteer coordinator, referred to

as an annual “village family reunion.”

Novak explained that if you scan the hundreds of people in the stands, only half of them will be watching the game. The other half will be catching up on what’s been going on with longtime friends who keep coming back year after year.

Rachelle Richmond, who has been volunteering for 33 years, often kept score for the games, but this year, she was selling tickets The way payment for the beer and food is handled at the event is that tickets, a dollar apiece, are sold in one spot and used to pay for food and drinks. A beer , for example, costs five tickets.

Admission to the games is free, but PDOFP makes money by selling a lot of beer, food and souvenir items like T-shirts and mugs.

The heat did not seem to bother the volunteers. Sandy Byrnes said the vols who have been doing the tournament for many years have been through rain, heat, a storm or two and even cold. Novak laughed and said that on the days when it was cold, the heat from the grills felt pretty good.

Reis-Evitt shrugged off concer ns about the heat saying, “I worked at the Junction Diner for almost 10 years. In the kitchen the temperature would get up to 115 de grees. I’m used to doing a lot of sweating.”

As if to put an exclamation mark on the Thursday evening weather talk, a Friday night storm swept through Forest Park with winds strong enough to rip the tenting covering the concession area and blow it two blocks away. Iovinelli recalled thinking she was seeing a war zone as she drove down Harrison Street on Saturday mor ning

The maintenance crew had covered the infields with tarps before the rain came, so they were dry. Many pitched in, including the Public Works Department, members from the tournament teams, and neighbors, all of whom cleaned up, reorganized, and brought The Park “back to normal” by 11 a.m.

Novak, the parks’ executive director from 1974 till 2007, when asked what it was like to go from the “general” coordinating the many details of such an undertaking to being “demoted” to grilling sausages, replied, “It’s great! It takes a lot of pressure off. I don’t have all the headaches.”

Without mentioning her name, the for mer executive director was giving an indirect compliment to Jackie Iovinelli who is cur-

rently in that position. During the four-day tournament, Iovinelli, the commissioners and her staff don’t get much sleep because “the buck really does stop with them.” They couldn’t pull off a major event like the No Gloves Nationals without the volunteers, and the volunteers couldn’t do it without leadership.

Although the volunteers aren’t paid, they are rewarded with something more than satisfaction and fun. “When the volunteers arrive,” explained Iovinelli, “they receive a merchandise T-shirt from this year’s tournament and 20 tickets to use at the event to buy food and drink while enjoying great softball.

“Our grillers also receive a nice apron!”

In his memo, Gross mentioned several issues. The security camera software hasn’t been updated since at least 2017, and video from the cameras that do work “is not the best quality.” Since the current cameras were installed, technology has improved, and the village can now get higher-definition cameras.

According to the Griffon Systems memo to the village, they will be supplying camancouver, British Columbia-based Avigilon Alta. The community center’s new cameras will watch the playground behind the building — which rests on top of the pumping station reservoir — and two cameras watching the parking lot in front of the building. There will also be cameras in the lobby, daycare and other areas used for community programs.

The Public Works building will get three cameras that will collectively cover the parking lot at the south end of the building and the storage area to the west of it.

In his memo, Gross wrote that he was pleased with the way Grif fon’s traffic cameras worked. Having the security cameras using the same hardware and software as the other equipment would “create a streamlined system for viewing and saving” security footage village-wide. During the meeting, Amidei said it will let the village have “one system that interfaces with everything.”

Earlier during the July 24 meeting, the village council approved an ARPA budget that allocated $114,000 toward re placing the cameras.

Prisoner breaks holding cell door after being arrested

A 36-year-old Romeoville man, arrested for drunk driving, didn’t break out of his jail cell — but he damaged the door enough to render it “inoperable,” requiring over $2,000 in repairs

On July 24, at 12:17 a.m., a police of ficer on routine patrol spotted a maroon 2015 Chrysler 300 speeding west on Roosevelt Road. As the officer raced after it, the car turned north on 1st Avenue, ignoring red lights and tur ned west on Harrison Street. The officer stopped the car on the 900 block of Harrison Street in Maywood

The officer observed that the driver, from Romeoville, and his passenger, a 37-year-old Chicago man, slurred their words and had red, glassy eyes. They subsequently admitted they have been drinking. The passenger also had a Smith & Wesson handgun, and while he had a Firearm Owner Identification card, he didn’t have a Concealed Carry License

Both men were arrested, the driver charged with speeding and drunk driving, and the passenger charged with carrying a gun without a license and not wearing a seatbelt. Both were cited for having open liquor bottles in the car, and both were jailed

The Romeoville man kept kicking the cell door, which “destroyed the locking mechanism,” loosened the deadbolt lock and bent the door itself. The village contractor estimated it would cost $2,300 to fix the door.

This got the man from Romeoville charged with damaging gover nment property on top of all the other charges.

Retail robbery

Forest Park police tracked a man, who allegedly robbed a 7-Eleven location at 205 Harlem Ave., to Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood, ultimately apprehending him.

The 31-year-old Chicago man reportedly robbed the store on July 29 at 6:12 a.m. The stolen cash had a tracking device, which led the police to the 5000 block of South Indiana Avenue in Chicago. The tracker had an alarm that could be activated on command, allowing police to locate it

Police surrounded a three-flat building where the tracker last broadcast from and waited for reinforcements before activating

Wellness Lecture On: Immune Health 2.0

it. They spotted a man matching the robber’s description moving at the rear of the building. He was caught and arrested

The search of a second-story unit revealed cash and a handgun spread out on the kitchen table. The man was charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon as a felon.

Armed Robbery

A man was robbed at gunpoint on the mor ning of July 26 as he walked to work

The victim was walking east on Washington when he spotted the robber heading in the opposite direction. He cut through the alley on the 7400 block of Washington Street, but the robber caught up with him, reportedly flashing a silver handgun and demanding his belongings. The victim gave the robber his wallet, phone and a backpack with a rain jacket and a cookbook. The perpetrator was last seen running west on Washington.

The police tried to track the victim’s phone, but it was turned off.

Vehicle Theft

A blue 2020 Hyundai Tucson was stolen from under the condo building in the 1000 block of Desplaines Avenue as one of the neighbors watched.

The building has parking spaces in the partially open area on the first floor. On July 28, at 5:40 p.m., the witness, another resident, was coming out of the lobby when he spotted two teens “frantically” trying to start the victim’s car. The witness noticed that one of the windows was shattered. He walked to his own car and, when he turned around, the Hyundai was gone.

The car has been flagged as stolen, and the victim said he would press charges if the thieves are caught.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, July 24-29, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

‘Ijust had this picture in my mind of a petite young woman driving a Harley Fat Boy down the highway with a 250-pound guy dressed in black leather sitting behind her on the bike.”

Pastor Walter Mitty had been telling his good friend Michael Rosenthal about the debate on masculine identity at the Men’s Fellowship Group in Main Café last Saturday, and he laughed out loud when he tried to picture Michael’s cartoon image.

When he calmed down, Mitty told his neighbor that Asch was talking about his father who played the role of the strong, silent man of the house and protector and provider for the family. He said Asch remembered his father loving the character of Archie Bunker on TV and would always sing along with the theme song, Those were the days And you knew who you were then girls were girls and men were men

The men around the big table didn’t laugh when Asch shared his memory because they all shared a feeling of loss. They had all lost some of the sense of knowing what it means to be a man.

Dominique told the guys there had been some online chatter that he and Pastor Mitty were gay. Why else would two good-looking

guys in their prime be single?

Mitty noted that every so often an older woman at church tried to set him up with a single woman she knew.

Eric Anderson asked his pastor, “So is Jesus a role model for us regarding how to be a real man?”

Mitty wasn’t ready for that one. As he fumbled for an answer, he realized that he had always thought of Jesus as kind of androgynous, kind of half and half in more ways than one. Half God and half man. Half male and half female.

Which prompted Michael to ask his friend after listening to his summary with interest, “Walt, are you really OK with not having a partner?”

“You mean a sexual partner, right?” Mitty said and didn’t wait for an answer. “You know, a while ago I talked to Fr. Sullivan about that and his answer was first that Jesus apparently was celibate and was OK with that, and also that Jesus seemed to have a mission that was more important than being a family man.”

“And that’s true for you?”

“Yeah, kind of. As you know, Michael,

since Herman died, I’ve been imagining being married to Susan, but I can never see how it would work, so I push the thought to the back of my mind. I guess that shows my sense of mission really does outweigh my romantic fantasies.”

He added that on the way home from The Main he had stopped at Ber nie Rolvaag’s History/Herstory Book Store, shared with the owner what had gone on at the Main, and asked him if he had any historical perspective on the topic.

“Well, Walt, I’ll start with Thomas Jefferson. When he wrote that all men are created equal, he did not seem to have in mind women or Black folks. As you know, he owned slaves and apparently did not think his wife had the intellect to vote intelligently.”

“White men ruled the roost, right.”

“Then a century and a half later women got the right to vote and the Feminist Movement resulted in women starting to beat men at their own game in positions of authority. We elected a Black man president and two

percent of PM 2.5 in a classroomsized space. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/ pii/S0048969722069133

Relieved to take a break from wearing an N-95 mask, I settled into one of the many empty chairs in the main reading room. I pulled open my laptop and looked at the latest data from the nearby air monitoring stations. On that day, the nearest stations were in Cicero and Schiller Park, but both of them were reporting PM 2.5 levels at code red, meaning “very unhealthy” air. This useful map can be found at www iqair.com/air-quality-map and now includes at least one air monitoring station in Oak Park. A similar map sponsored by US EPA can be found at https://fire. airnow.gov.

Later in the day, when the air quality map showed some improvement, I stepped outside but was hit with the sharp contrast between the pleasant atmosphere within the library and the hot, acrid air outside. It occurred to me that most Oak Park residents were probably not aware of just how severe the PM 2.5 concentrations were that day and of the various public sites within the village that offered a healthier alter native Kids’ lungs tend to be pretty vulnerable and this would be a good day to shift to indoor activities supported by portable air cleaners, but apparently some of the nearby day camps were continuing with outdoor games and sports.

It would be helpful if the different parts of

gay people as senators with 11 more in the House.”

As for men feeling lost about masculinity, Ber nie said, “That’s partly what fueled the politics of grievance.”

Mitty told Michael that when his nephews were babies, his brother Her man had changed as many diapers as Susan had, and when Herman was slowing going downhill, he had done most of the cooking

“You know, Michael, I have a view of the sidewalk outside my office window at church and I see as many men pushing strollers as women.”

After hanging up Walt’s mind drifted back to Ber nie’s bookstore. As he was leaving, he noticed a book on the shelf by Stephen Ambrose titled Undaunted Courage and remembered how he had resonated with that story because his own life had felt like a jour ney of discovery

And he came to a conclusion or at least a tentative one. If in fact men are on a journey of discovery and we still don’t know what we’ll discover, that leaves us with a lot of uncertainty. So if we’re not comfortable with ambiguity, our choice is to demand that we always be in the driver’s seat on our Harley bikes or find meaning and even joy in the journey.

the village gover nment, including the park district and schools in addition to the libraries, took stock of what they are offering in ter ms of particulate removal. And then inform village residents of the location of high-quality filtration systems. Households can also get their own filters or go the DIY route with a Corsi-Rosenthal box (https:// chemrxiv.org/engage/chemrxiv/article-deta ils/632dd805e665bda75a1002f8).

Unfortunately, the conditions we experienced in early summer are likely to retur n in the future and with even higher concentrations of lung-damaging smoke. The average Canadian emits less fossil fuel-related greenhouse gases than the average American and in this particular instance, the climate impact is coming back to haunt us.

Icame across an article with a “Tribune” disturbing headline: “Poll: Democracy failing its promise.” It says the majority of Americans believe our laws and policies do a poor job of representing what we want. Here are a few that disturb them:

Now that Florida schools are teaching students the “benefits” of slavery, including the valuable skills slaves lear ned, descendants of slave owners are demanding reparations for all that free on-the-job-training.

Increasing vehicle mileage standards have been declared unconstitutional, freeing auto manufacturers to bring back leaded gas, whitewall tires and large tail fins.

Supreme Court declares owners of nonexistent businesses can refuse service to non-existent gay couples. Owners of nonexistent businesses applaud the decision, while non-existent gay couples could not be reached for comment.

The EPA discovers a wall of window fans lining the Canadian border blowing wood smoke toward America. U.S. demands all ex-

tensions cords be disconnected and the 5,000-mile-long power strip be unplugged.

Popular books are being anned across America. This includes To Kill a Mockingbird because the title suggests animal cruelty.

Americans who are still using AOL are being targeted by olitical campaigns to make onations. AOL users see this as discriminatory toward people who are hopelessly behind the times.

Migrants are complaining about being flown to Martha’s Vineyard because it’s almost impossible to make tee times or dinner reservations

Many Americans do not “believe” in climate change, despite the blizzards that are hitting Hawaii and the spring-break revelers who are overrunning Antarctica.

The National Weather Service is absolving TV meteorologists for getting forecasts wrong, exaggerating weather events, and unnecessarily scaring viewers

In a startling decision, Washington agrees to let the Confederacy secede peacefully this

time. It is believed that establishing diplomatic relations with Richmond will lead to Norther ners and Southerners getting along better than they are now.

In a blow for geographic common sense, individual oceans will no longer have names. They will just be called “The Ocean.” Geographers have given up on solving the whole “Indian” problem that Columbus started

There are some Americans who believe they have a “monopoly on reality.” We look forward to their lectures at holiday parties.

There has been a successful boycott of Bud Light for featuring a transgender influencer. There will soon be a boycott against “Barbie” for sending an empowering message to women. However, the boycott against guns is not going well.

Since democracy is no longer working, Americans long for the day when we were ruled by a foreign monarch. So far, no authoritarian regimes are willing to take us on as a colony.

Now that affirmative action has been declared unconstitutional, minorities will have a tougher time getting admitted to institutions of higher lear ning, like the Electoral College
