With ARPA funding secured, Forest Park Chamber launches marketing e ort

New resident guide, social media campaign top priorities

Now that the Forest Park Village Council officially signed of f on giving the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce $40,000 a year to help it market the village for the next three years, the chamber is eager to get to work.

The organization has long acted as the village’s de facto marketing department for years. The infusion of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal stimulus funding gave Forest Park a pool of money to support those ef forts.

But getting money to the chamber took several tries. The village council requested a marketing plan, and then delayed issuing the money after another ARPA-funded project – the new Mohr Community Center -- ran over budget.

On July 24, the village council approved an ARPA spending plan, including the marketing funding for the chamber. At the time, Village Administrator Moses Amidei said if the council approved the plan, he would issue the first installment of the first year’s funding as soon as possible.

The chamber’s first priority is to put together a new resident guide, and it is already developing a digital marketing campaign.

According to the marketing plan chamber President Neil Rembos presented to the village council back in February, they planned to spend $6,000 on digital marketing, $12,000 on printing Welcome New Residents guides “to drive new residents to FP [sic] to patronize our businesses,” $6,000 on digital billboard ads, $10,000 on social media promotions, $4,000 to team up with Visit Oak Park to put digital ads on streaming services and $2,000 for in-person events such as a Restaurant Week.

Chamber Executive Director Laurie Kokenes confirmed to the Review that the plan remains the same – but they are allowing themselves some flexibility.

“If a great opportunity presents itself along the way, we may take advantage of it if there is room in the budget,” she said.

The new resident guides will be mailed to people based on the information from the Data Axle USA, a marketing data compiler.

“We’ll also begin working on branding messages, social media and other digital marketing,” Kokenes said.

She said that the chamber already started working with Visit Oak Park to put together a digital ad campaign that will kick of f in September. They are still working on the details of the social media campaigns.

“We will be able to take advantage of [Visit Oak Park’s] contract with a digital ad manager,” Kokenes said.

The chamber will also be taking advantage of the billboard where Desplaines Avenue passes over Eisenhower Expressway.

Amidei originally planned to give the chamber the first $20,000 on May 1. In October, the council would review how the money was spent, and, if there are no issues, Amidei would give the chamber another $20,000 in November.

It’s unclear whether the delay in giving the chamber the initial funding will delay future installments, but the nearly threemonth delay didn’t dampen the chamber’s enthusiasm for the plan.

“I really would love to thank the mayor and the commissioners,” Rembos told the Review. “They really collaborated with us on supporting the chamber and supporting the community.”

“We are very grateful for our partnership with the village and for this funding,” Kokenes said. “These funds allow us keep Forest Park’s name at the forefront and strengthen the local economy through promoting its unique character, showcasing our business community, and raising awareness of key events and all there is to do in Forest Park.”

Comedy club set to open on Madison Street next summer

Studio 8 to remain open through end of the year

Actor-turned-comedian Emily Ramirez is poised to get the zoning approvals she will need to buy the building at 7316 Madison St., Forest Park, and open a comedy club on its first-floor storefront.

BABS (short for Bad-Ass Bitches — a reference to a Saturday Night Live sketch) comedy club will offer comedy classes, host comedy shows and provide a space for comedy writers to hone their skills. It will only offer alcoholic drinks during the late evening comedy shows. Ramirez felt that, while drinks are an important part of watching a show, serving them all day would only lead to trouble. BABS will host family-friendly comedy shows on Sunday afternoons and raunchier acts on weekdays and Saturday evenings.

The storefront is currently home to the Studio 8 vintage décor and refurbished furniture store. Ramirez said the store has been operating on a month-to-month lease and, if the sales goes through, she will give them four months to transition. The sale is contingent on the village council approving a zoning change that will allow a comedy club to operate on Madison Street in the first place — something that the council is expected to take up on Aug. 14.

Ramirez launched BABS as a comedy event company that puts on shows and private events. She wanted to give comedians a pro-

fessional environment with some protections she took for granted when she was an actress Ramirez previously told this newspaper that she wanted to nurture the west suburban comedy scene and give local comics an opportunity to perform without having to travel to downtown Chicago and further-flung suburbs

She previously said that, ideally, she and her husband wanted to buy a mixed-use building with apartments on a top floor and a storefront at the bottom. That way, she could live where she worked. Ramirez said the Studio 8 building would allow her to do that. If the sale goes through, she would eventually plan to move into one of the three second-story units and continue to rent out the remaining two.

But the first-floor commercial space would need to be cleared to make way for the comedy club — something that, Ramirez said, she wasn’t particularly happy about. She said that she looked for other buildings that would suit her needs and, when nothing materialized, she was somewhat relived to discover that Studio 8 owners have been prepared for a possible sale long before she made her of fer — hence the month-to-month-lease.

Ramirez said she was in no hurry to kick them out.

“Even though we have a lot of work to do, I’m giving them four whole months, [until after] the Christmas holidays, to slowly be able to reduce their inventory and give them as many sales as possible, just so they don’t have to rush out the building,” she said.

While negotiating the sale, Ramirez discovered that, technically speaking, comedy

clubs weren’t a permitted use on Madison Street. On July 17, Forest Park Planning & Zoning Commission recommended changing the zoning code to make it a conditional use and accepting Ramirez’s application for said conditional use. The sale is contingent on the village council approving both items.

If those items clear the council, Ramirez said she expects the sale to be completed in September. She is also in the process of applying for a liquor license

The conditional use application states that, while BABS would open at noon, alcohol wouldn’t be served until after 7 p.m. Ramirez said that not only did she want to allay the possible concerns of neighbors, but she felt that serving alcohol all day just wasn’t a good idea — citing Forest Park Tap Room, which used to be located almost directly across the street from the Studio 8 building, as an example of what she wanted to avoid.

“The longer you’re imbibing alcohol, the more likely you are to have some rowdiness,” she said.

BABS will be open Wednesdays through Sundays. On most afternoons, the club will serve as an Open Writer’s Room, where come-

dians can come and work on their material. The club will host comedy classes — which, Ramirez said, would be based on what she and her friends learned in the classroom and through trial and error — on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with shows taking place later in the evening Sunday would be an all-ages day, with familyfriendly comedy shows taking place during the afternoons, and teen open mics in the evenings.

“Our goal is to have a soft opening in the late summer of next year and have a grand opening in the fall of 2024,” Ramirez said. “[Fall] is typically the beginning of the comedy season, when people start going back indoors.”

Food Aid Festival bridges Forest Park and Oak Park

Food, music and a serving of help

It is rare for an event to bridge Forest Park and Oak Park and take place over a two- day span. The Food Aid Festival 2023: A Musical Festival to Combat Food Insecurity will take place at Exit Strategy Brewing Company in Forest Park and Scoville Park in Oak Park The festival kicks off at Exit Strategy on Aug. 26 from noon to 9 p.m. It will feature live music and food from a variety of vendors. Tickets are $20 for adults, kids under 12 are free Katherine Valleau of Exit Strategy has been passionate about helping the hungry

since she was in high school. Members of her marching band conducted food drives and supplied food to shelters. “I saw the impact hunger has on people.” For Food Aid, Valleau is partnering with Donnie Biggins, who books bands to play at the brewery.

Biggins is hosting the second half of Food Aid on Aug. 27 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Scoville Park, Lake Street at Oak Park Avenue. It will feature a line-up of local musicians and a panel discussion about food insecurity conducted by WBEZ personality, Taylor Nazon.

Fred Hampton, Jr. is among the panelists Festival-goers are encouraged to make a $20 donation and to purchase food from nearby restaurants

This is the second year Biggins has hosted a Food Aid Festival. Last year, they held a twoday event at the Kehrein Center for the Arts in Austin. Oak Park activist Anthony Clark

was on hand and proceeds went to Community Bridges. The cause was serious but the event was fun, “Like a high school reunion.”

Valleau is also promising fun at the brewery. “We’re going to do a beer release that day. It will be a golden ale with citrus characteristics.” Besides quaffing beer, customers can sample brisket sandwiches from Umamicue, pizza from Dark Horse Grill and empanadas from Papa’s Chicago. These vendors are donating 10% of their profits to Food Aid, while the brewery donates 20%. Proceeds from Food Aid will benefit Unity Fridges, the Austin Eats Initiative and the Westchester Food Pantry.

Besides enjoying a variety of food and brews, patrons will be treated to “music from stem to stern.” Oak Park’s School of Rock will kick of f the outdoor concert, followed by Biggins’ band, The Shams Band, The Heavy

CRIME

Sounds and Cheryl Tomblin. The School of Rock will also play at Scoville Park. They will be joined by Fury, a hip-hop artist from Austin, Michelle McGuire and a Fleetwood Mac tribute group called Second Hand News

“There’s no point in having a business if you can’t do good,” Valleau said. Biggins is also benefiting others with his business, Harmonica Dunn. Several of his musician friends are forgoing their fee or accepting a lesser amount.

Biggins first became concerned about food insecurity during the pandemic. He found it shocking that 50% of Austin residents lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables. His goal this year is to raise $10,000 and hopes to make Food Aid a yearly event.

Stolen car recovered, thanks to rowdy funeral procession

A stolen blue 2021 Volkswagen was recovered after a teen driving it took part in a rowdy funeral procession.

On Aug. 4 at 1:04 p.m., a funeral procession was making its way south on Desplaines Avenue, near the Harrison Street intersection. Police officers in the area flagged the Volkswagen as stolen in an aggravated vehicular hijacking.

As the officers tried to curb it, the driver raced off, heading west on Roosevelt Road and turning north on 1st Avenue, hitting a car as it tried to get away from the officer by driving into the southbound lane. The car went east on the Eisenhower Expressway before turning north on Harlem Avenue, then east on Jackson Boulevard, using Oak Park Avenue to reach Garfield Street and going east again, weaving its way through Chicago’s West Side before crashing at the intersection of Loomis Street and Washburne Avenue in East Garfield Park.

The driver and four passengers got out of the car and ran. Drug Enforcement Administration agents who happened to be in the area joined the chase. They were able to catch two of the teens. Each was charged with one count of motor vehicle theft and three counts of resisting arrest.

The teens were released into their parents’

custody.

Dunkin Donuts robbed

Two masked men held a Dunkin Donuts cashier at gunpoint, taking the contents of the cash register and fleeing. The robbery occurred on Aug. 4 at the 7660 Madison St. location. Around 6:30 p.m., two masked men entered the store and jumped over the counter One man pointed a handgun at the victim’s head and demanded he open the cash register. The employee complied, and the second robber emptied the register, taking $100 to $200 in cash.

The first robber then demanded that the second register be opened. The employee said it was empty, and the two robbers fled the store, reportedly in a dark gray Honda sedan parked in the store’s parking lot, and drove west on Madison Street.

Stolen Apple watch

A burglary victim was able to track his stolen Apple watch to an apartment building in Oak Park — but the location wasn’t precise enough to narrow it down to a specific part of the building.

The man had left his car, a white 2000 Ca-

dillac DeVille, parked in front of his sister’s house on Hannah Avenue. On July 30 around 6 a.m., the victim discovered that someone opened the car’s center console and stole his watch, state ID and several credit cards. Using his Find My iPhone application, he tracked his watch to an apartment building at the 600 block of Garfield Street. The victim tried to get into the lobby before contacting the police

The watch moved throughout the building, but the location wasn’t precise enough to narrow it to a specific unit, and it was too fa r away for the victim to activate the tracking alarm.

The police officers gave up finding the watch. The victim didn’t wish to sign a complaint, which meant that the watch couldn’t be flagged as stolen. The officers advised him to contact “the appropriate jurisdiction” if he receives an updated location.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, July 30-Aug. 5, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Village recognized for care of trees on public proper ty

Morton Arboretum accreditation could help with future grants

Morton Arboretum has reco gnized the village of Forest Park for its ef fort to better manage the many trees in public rights of way with an ArbNet program Level 1 tree accreditation.

In the joint press release issued by the village and the accreditation program, the reco gnition signifies that Forest Park achieved “particular standards of professional practices deemed important” for public green spaces. This comes a year af-

ter the village used a $9,375 Morton Arboretum grant to inventory all of the trees on public property and develop a plan for how best to take care of them. Village Administrator Moses Amidei told the Review that the accreditation would make the village more “methodical and intentional” about handling the trees, and it could help with some tree-related grants in the future.

The village council approved the village’s Urban Forestry Management plan on June 27, 2022. As the Review re ported at the time, the tree inventory found that, while Forest Park is home to 72 species of trees, 50% of all trees fall within the Maple genus, which means that a disease that affects maples could wipe out half of Forest Park trees. The plan put several maple species on the list of trees not allowed to be planted, though other maple species were still allowed. To create a more diverse tre-

escape, it recommended planting trees that are currently rare in the village and also well-suited for Forest Park’s climat e.

The poli cy changed standards for re placing any trees that get cut down and banned the practice of “tree topping” — removing the top portion of a tree. The Forest Park Recreation Board became responsible for providing “assistance, direction, and advice to the village re garding the preservation, planting, management, and protection of trees” on top of its existing responsibilities for managing village-owned pocket parks and coordinating community volunteer ef forts.

Amidei said that getting the accreditation supports Forest Park’s “priority and commitment concerning the reco gnition of our tree resources as an important aspect of our public infrastructure.

“We are going to be a lot more methodi-

cal and intentional in our planning, planting, etc., based upon the results of our inventory and management plan,” he added.

Would it help the village to get grants?

“Yes, we will include this accreditation, along with our Tree City USA designation, in future grant applications with respect to seeking funding to plant trees as well as trees that need removal — dead or diseased [e.g. emerald ash borer-stricken] trees, etc.,” Amidei re plied.

Accreditation was announced on July 10. During the July 24 village council meeting, Commissioner of Public Property Jessica Voogd, who advocated for the tree inventory and the forestry management plan in the past, said it was good for the village.

“The designation honors our goals within the community, but also provides opportunities for collaboration,” she said. “It’s a great thing that we want to acknowledge.”

Forest Park’s arts culture

There was a time when Forest Park was seen, and rightly, as lacking an invigorating cultural life. Sure, 30 years ago there was the provocative and often outstanding Circle Theatre. But that place has been a mattress store for a decade.

Over that same decade, though, Forest Park has been shooting off sprigs and boughs of arts and culture in every dimension. It has brought energy and innovation and fun to this village while doing it in a very Forest Park way. No one is proposing a gigantic arts center and hiring executive directors. Instead, Forest Park is using the things at hand to invent a vibrant grassroots arts culture.

This is nonprofit entrepreneurial art that is accessible to everyone, that is welcoming to everyone

And we’d start there. As Forest Park has become much more diverse — by race, gender, sexuality, faith, income, work — it has opened itself to art as a way to express that generous diversity.

We see it all around us. And we celebrate it.

How about the No Gloves softball tournament? High culture in our book. And what a platform for the park district to shine. More than 100 volunteers make this multiple-day event happen. Arts and culture are driven by volunteers.

Hoping there is a new owner for Centuries & Sleuths who will maintain the creative focus of that independent bookstore. In praise of o -the-rails lms

One of my pandemic projects, as I think I have mentioned before, was the watching of many, many movies. I have watched almost 500 movies since the beginning of the pandemic, and in so doing I have identified a heretofore unrecognized genre of movie that I particularly enjoy: “Movies that realize at some point during production that they are absolutely of f-the-rails deranged and choose, gloriously, to lean into their exuberant implausibility as hard as they can.”

A woefully incomplete list of examples: Pacific Rim, 2012 Xanadu, My Sp y, Showgirls, National Treasure, Tenet, pendence Day 2. At no point during the filming of any of those movies did anyone acce pt the suggestion, “Let’s maybe tone it down.” If anything, they realized the movies they re making were unsustainably ridiculous and elected, God bless them, to turn that “ish” up.

A good rule of thumb for identifying movies of this type: during a film you are moved to laugh aloud in delighted disbelief at the sheer audacity required to put what you are seeing on the screen, there is a good chance you are seeing a movie in this genre. Same goes for being inspired to laughingly say, “Are you <expletive> kidding me?” at any cinematic choice.

Summer is for blockbuster movies. We are all aware of this, having marinated in 200 Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings over the past couple of decades, but this year people seem especially excited. I have seen Barbie, and Oppenheimer is in my near future, but today I am instead going to evangelize a movie that is far superior to either of these two artistic of ferings. Only one movie I have seen so far this summer has truly leaned in to true-bats potential of imaginative cinema. I am speaking, of course, of The Me g 2: The Trench.

Hear me out.

T here is not one second of wasted time on the screen. It is as lean and taut a movie as it has ever been my pleasure to enjoy, even if any of the other entries in this genre do not have sharks twice the size of box cars attempting to settle strangely personal scores with the always-welcome Jason Statham. (I don’ t remember the names of anyone else in this movie.)

T he plot is not especially convoluted. There are enor mous, enormous sharks

T here is also an evil corporation because you can only extract so much dialogue from giant sharks, and also evil corporations have greater access to plastic explosives. There is an additional giant sea creature, whose appearance I won’ t spoil exce pt to suggest that all I could think was, “You know, a little olive oil and some lemon and a really big charcoal grill …” There is an imperiled child who is vaguely impor tant to Jason Statham in unspecified ways. There are several plot twists, each approximately as difficult to puzzle out in advance as your average e pisode of Scooby-Do o. There is aggressive defiance of the laws of both nature and physics. T here are several new revelations about scientific phenomena of which I had not previously been aware. For example, did you know that you won’ t be crushed by pressure if you are free diving 25,000 feet underwater as long as you are willing to fill your sinuses with seawater? I did not.

Not sure if the people visiting the Titanic were aware of this hack; if this movie had been released in May perhaps they would have survived.

The magic of nally growing up

Last Monday was magical. I had an emotional breakthrough. It surprised me like the waves of joy I experienced in Ireland. My self-image improved in an instant and I’ve been enjoying the benefits ever since.

The magic began in the mor ning. Mondays are my deadline day and I had to write a feature story and come up with a column. Nor mally, I would feel the pressure of the “dreadline,” but I thought to myself: Why should I feel stressed out? I love writing and spent the whole day playing with words, while listening to classical music.

When I was finished, I was pleased with the two pieces. I also barely made the deadline for the St. Ignatius Alumni Newsletter I submitted an article about my classmate, Mike Brady, being inducted into the 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame. It would run the next day.

That evening, I was reflecting on the trifecta of articles I submitted and suddenly I was filled with a sense of well-being. I was in such a good mood when I went to bed that I couldn’t fall asleep. That had never happened to me before. Insomnia caused by

happiness. For the first time, I had a positive self-image

Later, I consulted the ultimate authority about everything — my phone — and lear ned we form our self-image around the age of 5. That was a particularly bad year for me, getting expelled from Kindergarten. Plus, I was one of the few Irish Catholics who developed a poor self-image from my treatment at home, at school and in church

Many of us grew up in chaotic families, were educated by negative critical teachers and shamed by priests. As a result, I always felt bad, regardless of what I accomplished. This did not match reality but it’s a tough feeling to shake.

I’ve tried shaking other people out of their negative self-image. I told an employee, “You’re the only person in the world who doesn’t know how great you are.” My words didn’t immediately help. She continued to set impossibly high standards and feel bad about not achieving them.

It helped me, though, when I received encouraging words from readers. Most columnists get little feedback. Writing is a solitary exercise and we don’t know if any-

A LOOK BACK IN TIME

one is reading it. When someone would tell me they read my column, my standard reply was, “That makes two of us.”

That was no longer funny when the pandemic hit. Like everyone else, my life was in disarray. At the newspaper, we felt disconnected from our colleagues and it was impossible to interview people in person. Then, during the depths of the plague, I met a masked woman at Ed’s Way. She told me I was respected in the community and should keep writing despite the pandemic.

I’ve been living off her words ever since. I also received positive feedback from others. I even welcomed negative feedback. It showed me that someone cared enough to read the column and made the effort to respond to it.

Living in the close-knit community of Forest Park also helped. I cannot believe how many community-building events we have here. Gatherings that are fun and life-affir ming. It’s great for connecting with neighbors and making new friends.

When I finally woke up on Tuesday, the euphoria was gone but the new self-image remained. When adversity came, in the form of negative or toxic people, I was much better at handling it. I shared the news about my emotional breakthrough with my wife

She was happy that after all these years my 5-year-old finally grew up

An exceptional Montessori education for over 35 years

West Suburban Montessori School has been providing an exceptional Montessori education in Oak Park for over 35 years. We value kindness, hard work, and the spark or enthusiasm required for real learning to take place. The children who attend WSMS are on a path toward independence. Our graduates are confident, strong minded, outside of the box thinkers. They are kind, respectful, and curious.

West Suburban Montessori School embodies the educational principles established by Dr. Maria Montessori (18701952), an Italian physician who dedicated her career to the study of children. Following Dr. Montessori’s guidance, we focus on the whole child at WSMS, including the intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual development of the child.

• Montessori environments have mixed ages: Primary (ages 3-6), Lower Elementary (ages 6-9), and Upper Elementary (ages 9-12)

• Children actively engage in their learning. The guide gives lessons to the student, and the student continues the work independently.

• Hands on learning happens in Montessori environments. The Montessori materials are made to be touched and manipulated.

• Montessori students have freedom of movement. Movement is vital for all children.

• An AMI credentialed guide in each classroom is key. Montessori guides focus on redirection, honest conversation, and encouragement of their students.

• Uninterrupted work cycles are paramount to Montessori classrooms. Students work at their own pace, learn to concentrate deeply, and develop interests in a full range of subject areas.

West Suburban Montessori School is accredited by the Association Montessori International (AMI) to educate children from 3 to 12 years of age.

Full-Day Kindergarten Comes to District 90

District 90 students will begin the 2023-24 school year on August 24, which also starts the District’s full-day Kindergarten program. Five current District 90 teachers -- Tammy Brenneman, Amy Driscoll, Barb Garvey, Kathryn Stasys, and Lori Suzuki -- worked throughout the end of the prior school year and during the summer to transform the kindergarten program.

With nearly 50 years of experience teaching kindergarten, the teachers expect the beginning of the school year will focus on helping young learners acclimate to a full-day program, build their stamina for learning, and adhere to classroom and school routines. “There’ll be more time for everything that happens in school –more time for cooperative learning and developing friendships,” said Amy Driscoll. Lori Suzuki added, “There’ll be more time to devote to both academic and socialemotional learning development.”

All five teachers expressed a common goal regarding their students. They strive to instill a love of learning in each student. Tammy Brenneman said it’s simply magical watching kindergarten students become independent learners. “Kindergarteners go from not knowing letters to reading books, from not knowing numbers to adding and subtracting,” Barb Garvey added. Further, it’s such a joy to see their delight as they learn new things, said Kathryn Stasys.

This transition to a full-day kindergarten program reflects District 90’s commitment to equity, social-emotional learning, incorporating teacher-facilitated, playbased instruction, and adequate time for student interventions and support during the school day. A full-day kindergarten program ensures that District 90 provides a strong academic foundation for all students.

Welcome back to school!

The Day Nursery’s missionwelcoming all children

The Day Nursery welcomed Charles when he was 3 years old, he spent most of his young life at home with his family during the pandemic, like so many other children. He joined his teacher and new friends with a lot of distrust of grown-ups from past trauma, and was very shy with other children. His challenges with being in a new place and selfregulation interfered with his ability to learn his letters and numbers, and grow socially and emotionally from a toddler to a preschooler. As an accredited and Gold Circle rated program, The Day Nursery is one of the only year-long, full-day programs that provides working families affordable and top-rated early childhood education. Our teachers build curriculum based on the IL Early Learning

A Tradition of Excellence and Equity

Standards, assesses progress, and engages with parents to practice skills at home. We are committed to each child’s educational path, that ensures they are kindergarten ready. The Day Nursery builds an equitable foundation for a successful future - for all children.

Charles practices his numbers, letters, and is an amazing artist!

The Day Nursery worked with his mother, a single mom of two, to find resources for the family and empowered them to actively stay involved with Charles’ learning process. The Day Nursery’s mission is to provide exceptional early childhood education in an environment that welcomes all children, enhances individual strengths and fosters the academic, socialemotional and physical development that leads to school readiness.

95% of Day Nursery children transition into Kindergarten with the skills for school success.

Terra Incognito is not just a pottery studio

Terra Incognito is a community of potters ranging from novices to artists-in-residence and has been part of the Oak Park community for over forty years. Numerous national ceramic artists started at Terra. The legacy of our studio is something they take great pride in, continuing with current and future potters.

When creating, people can experience mindfulness or a mini vacation from the world. Calming one’s mind and body from current happenings and circumstances, being conscious of the present and worrying about nothing else. The community at Terra is strong and flourishes because members say they feel a sense of peace and get a much-needed break from the chaos of life at the studio.

Terra Incognito has classes for everyone’s schedule and ability from beginners up to professional artists. Evening classes are offered MondayThursday, morning classes are on Tuesday and Friday. Classes run for 8 weeks, 3 hours per class, and are open to any skill level. Taste of Elmwood Park is back

Four days of fun, food, friends and family

The Taste of Elmwood Park is returning this week. Experience the best of Elmwood Park at the family-friendly event, Aug. 1013, in Central Park at the corner of Fullerton and 75th Avenues. The festival has it all – beer, wine, arts and crafts, rides, games and, of course, plenty of food from some of Elmwood Park’s finest restaurants. All together and you know why it’s been an unmissable event for over 30 years.

“The Taste of Elmwood Park is an iconic summer festival, and we are happy to welcome people from all over the Chicago region to celebrate all of the delicious food that our village has to offer,” said Lauren Gruber, Elmwood Park special events coordinator.

Providing all that delicious food are 23 different restaurants and vendors, includ-

ing several from Elmwood Park’s famous Restaurant Row along North Avenue. Come hungry and grab a slice of pizza from Armand’s then head over to the Café Cubano booth for an authentic Cuban sandwich. Don’t forget to top it all off with some of Grecian Kitchen’s loukoumades, Greek donut holes garnished with chopped walnuts, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. If you’re looking for an insider tip, pair the loukoumades with a side of gelato from Massa Café Italiano, another of the festival’s exciting food vendors. It’s a Mediterranean fusion treat you don’t want to miss.

It’s not just about the food though. There will be live music throughout the festival, so attendees can dance the days and nights away in between all of the good food Elmwood Park restaurants offer. The performing acts play a wide variety of tunes across decades and musical genres, from classic rock and ‘70s disco to soul, country western and swing – something for everyone

to groove out to. Over at the Taste Lounge, the festival’s premium cocktail bar sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, local dj’s will be spinning records, so the dance party never has to stop. Stop by the lounge throughout the four-day festival.

Dancing isn’t the only way to get blood pumping during the festival. Roll into a fun, food and fitness-filled good time with the Taste of Elmwood Park’s bocce tournament, which starts at 5 p.m., Aug. 10. Take part in “Fitness at the Festival” to jumpstart the body, mind and fun. Join the owners of ReNew Studio at 11:30 a.m., Saturday morning, for a full-body and high-energy workout. Tennis shoes are a must. Don’t forget your yoga mat Sunday morning! Head over to the festival for mats and mimosas, a blend of yoga and barre exercises, with the Barre Studio at 9:30 a.m., Sunday morning.

Of course, no Taste of Elmwood Park festival is complete without its now annual meatball eating contest. The meat-

ball consumption competition made its festival debut last year, with ESPN 1000’s Carmen DeFalco serving in the venerable role of contest host. The contest was an instant success as 12 randomly selected contestants scarfed down meatballs from Rosebud Restaurants, vying for first, second and third place prizes. This year, one of those contestants might just be you, so save some space in your stomach at 4 p.m., Saturday, in case you are the one to go down in history as the meatball eating champion.

Climate Ready Oak Park initiatives rolling out

Village bans fossil-fuel heating/appliances in new construction; may promote parkway planting

In August 2022, the Village of Oak Park adopted Climate Ready Oak Park, a comprehensive and long-range plan meant to address the global climate crisis.

Among the commitments embraced were a pledge to decrease communitywide greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2030, to achieve community-wide, net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and to establish 30% of Oak Park’s land as green infrastructure or enhanced park management.

Fossil fuel ban in new construction

On June 20, the Oak Park Village Board voted to approve an electrification ordinance, following the recommendations of

the Environment and Energy Commission and the Building Code Advisory Commission, which makes all-electric new construction part of the building code.

With this change, Oak Park becomes the first town in the Midwest to ban fossil fuels in new residential and commercial buildings.

The ordinance takes effect in January 2024 and was one of the steps identified as needed to help the village achieve the goal of having net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050.

Marcella Bondie Keenan, Oak Park’s chief sustainability officer, says that instead of using natural gas for stoves or heating, anything that would require gas will now be required to be all-electric in both new homes and in commercial construction.

At this point, she says that the ordinance only covers new construction and

not renovations to existing homes, but she states that it is possible that the village will eventually require that gas-fueled appliances and mechanicals be swapped out with electric in older buildings undergoing major renovations.

Parkway plantings

Another part of achieving the goal of increasing Oak Park’s green infrastructure is a goal of having 30% of plantings to be native plants.

“In addition to being in a climate change emergency, we’re also in a biodiversity emergency,” Bondie Keenan said.

Most of the green space in Oak Park is owned privately or by the Park District of Oak Park. The parkways, which are public property located between the sidewalk and the curb of the streets, are the primary opportunity for the village to reach its biodiversity goal by 2030.

On Aug. 1, the Oak Park Environment

and Energy Commission considered draft language that would amend village code to allow residents to plant on the parkways throughout the village and to promote the placement of native and pollinator plants in the parkway. The commission had several questions for village staf f, so the vote was tabled until village staf f could provide more infor mation.

As the draft language is finalized and before the issue goes to the village board, residents can weigh in by responding to an online survey at eng ageoakpark.com/ parkway-planting-ordinance.

While the language of the proposed ordinance was not available as of press time, the FAQs accompanying the survey lay out a few parameters of the plan.

The planting of “designated exotic weeds” or “noxious weeds” will not be permitted. The homeowners adjacent to the parkway will be responsible for the upkeep of the plantings in the parkway. Plantings near intersections will not be permitted to exceed 30 inches in height, and in other areas, the height should not exceed 36 inches.

The village would be permitted to disturb the plantings for any necessary utility or other work and, except in cases of emergency, will attempt to notify the homeowners adjacent to the parkway of the planned work two weeks in advance.

Bondie Keenan says that at this time, the ordinance will give homeowners permission to plant in the parkways but will not require re placing turf with plantings.

“Even urban areas can have an impact,” Bondie Keenan said. “This opens up all that parkway land, which is mostly turf.”

Details are still being worked out and responses to the community survey will be considered in determining what percentage of plantings should be native plantings and what kind of educational materials will be provided to the

community.

Looking ahead, Bondie Keenan says that the village is considering other initiatives to help meet its climate goals. The Oak Park Environment and Energy Commission is beginning to discuss night-sky pollution and rates for trash, recycling and composting that might encourage more residents to compost.

“These conversations are just starting,” Bondie Keenan said.

“In addition to being in a climate change emergenc y, we’re also in a biodiversity emergenc y.”

Winding road leads to spot on Il lini football roster

Former Fenwick lineman Engbers a preferred walk-on in Urbana

The road to a spot on the University of Illinois football team has been unique for Joep Engbers, a recent graduate of Fenwick High School.

Engbers was born in Singapore, but his parents are from the Netherlands, where he grew up and has citizenship. He then moved to Indonesia, then Papua New Guinea.

After moving to the Netherlands so his parents could marry, Engbers came with his family, which includes three sisters, to the United States, settling in Pennsylvania for two years. After a short return to Indonesia, they came back to the U.S. to stay.

The family moved to Waco, Texas, in time for Engbers’ high school freshman year. It was at Bosqueville High School that he got introduced to American football. Engbers immediately fell in love with the sport and decided it was something he wanted to pursue.

“I made varsity my freshman year,” said Engbers, a 6-foot-4, 310-pound lineman. “My mother told the coach I wouldn’t play varsity. It took about three weeks to convince her to let me play. I missed one game and eventually started that season.”

But Engbers wanted to improve his game in order to attract collegiate offers, and after his sophomore season at Bosqueville, he transfer red to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. There he faced top-quality competition that helped to hone his skills.

While at IMG, Engbers and his parents made another life-changing move

“When I was at IMG, my parents were still in Texas when my dad got a job offer in the Chicago area,” he said. “They were ready to leave Texas, and we moved to Oak Park. They told me about Fenwick, and I thought it was a good school.”

After talking with Fenwick player Mirko Jaksic (a University of Dayton signee) and meeting with head coach Matt Battaglia, Engbers opted to join the Friars for his senior season.

He made all-conference in the Chicago Catholic League/ East Suburban Catholic Conference and was named the White Division Lineman of the Year. He also got honorable mentions on the Chicago Sun-Times All-Area Team and the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 5A All-State Team.

Moreover, Engbers did great in the classroom, meriting honors for both the CCL/ESCC White Division and IHSFCA Class 5A All-Academic teams.

“I bonded with the team and never looked back,” he said. “It was an adjustment being a Catholic school, and I had to catch up on my theolo gy courses. But I loved [Fenwick]; it was like a family.”

“I’m really grateful I had the opportunity to coach Joep,” said Battaglia after the season on Twitter. “As good of a football player he is, he’s an even better person and teammate. Wherever Joep goes, I know he’s going to dominate on and of f the field and be a great re presentative of what Fenwick High School and Friar football are all about.”

Engbers, who played in the U.S. Ar my All-American Bowl in Frisco, Texas, after the season, received several NCAA Division I offers, including from Ball State, Brown,

Dartmouth, East Carolina and Kent State. But he opted to become a prefer red walk-on player at Illinois, because he had more than football in mind.

“I can see myself growing at Illinois,” said Engbers. “I talked with [defensive line] coach [Terrance] Jamison, and he said there was a chance of earning an eventual scholarship. Also, academics is a big thing. I’m going into business, and Illinois is such a great business school. It was a no-brainer and being close to home and my family being able to come here is a plus.”

Last year, Engbers initially started exclusively on offense, but became a two-way star by the end of the Friars’ season. He’s working as a defensive tackle as Illinois started fall camp Aug. 3, and he knows he’ll need to continue to put in the work in order to eventually make a contribution to the Fighting Illini.

“I need to buy into the program, take everything to heart and be coachable,” Engbers said. “I need to look at film and study plays and be the most physical person on the field and not let up.”

Engbers already has a supporter on the team in wide receiver Eian Pugh, a member of Fenwick’s 2021 IHSA Class 5A state championship team.

“There’s one locker between his and mine,” he said. “We see each other daily, and we’ve talked about our experiences at Fenwick.”
