One bite too many ends career of K9 unit Police dog Killian has retired By ROBERT J. LIFKA

ollowing a second biting incident in his three-year career, the Forest Park Police Department’s police dog, Killian, has been retired. Police Chief Tom Aftanas said he made the decision after Killian bit a member of his handler’s family last month. In June 2015, a man attending a demonstration at the Bob Haeger All-School Picnic suffered a puncture wound to his wrist after being bitten by Killian. The Forest Park Village Council approved Killian’s retirement by a 4-0 vote at Monday’s meeting, deeming him no longer fit for public service. Commissioner Joseph Byrnes did not attend. Aftanas said Killian has performed well in searches of buildings and vehicles and noted the police department has benefited from seizures of cash and drugs that the dog has discovered. Following the 2015 incident, Killian was no longer used in demonstrations. However, the liability involved has become too much, he added. If Forest Park needs a police dog’s services, Aftanas said they would make a mutual aid request to neighboring police departments. He said police departments in Berwyn and Oak Park have canine units. Officer Dan Miller, Killian’s handler, declined an offer to keep the dog, and Killian has been living in a kennel since last month. See K9 UNIT on page 5

A good mechanic is a great comfort

f the big stories we’ve covered at the Review, few have gotten a response, like my column about failing the emissions test. Three villagers called to offer their help, including a mechanic. I was touched but not surprised. We have used many Forest Park mechanics over the years, who were caring, competent and fair with their charges. The first was Forest Park Foreign Car Repair. They gave us the lowest repair bill in history for fixing the linkage on our VW Rabbit. Eight dollars! Lately, we’ve been using Forest Automotive. We brought Scott Posson a beater we bought for $500. After looking it over, Scotty recommended we sell it to a scrap dealer for 100 bucks. I promised next time I’d bring Scott a “real” car he could actually fix. The next car we brought him wasn’t cheap — we had gotten it for free! It was perfect for tooling around town until the brakes failed and my wife sailed through an intersection. Scott gave us a price for a brake job and other repairs, which far exceeded the value of the car. To replace it, he recommended a friend

at a dealership, who sold us a car that, so far, has not sailed through an intersection. Meanwhile, I was nursing my 2007 Pontiac along and noticed that my engine kept getting louder. It suddenly roared like a jet engine, when the entire exhaust system dropped to the pavement. I stopped immediately, figuring that if I drove another inch, I would destroy the exhaust. Fortunately, I was two blocks from Forest Automotive. After I explained my problem to Scott, he dispatched an employee to secure the exhaust with a bungee cord. This kept me from damaging the exhaust and it only required a few bolts to re-attach it. Scott then began his fight with my “check engine” light, so I could pass the emissions test. As I mentioned, I spent my days driving to the Addison testing station, only to fail the test. Finally, the Addison guys told me I would never pass the test if I didn’t go to one of their recommended mechanics. This sounded like extortion. I decided to stick with Scotty. After he fixed an O-ring or something, he

wouldn’t let me pay the bill until I passed. What a relief it was to finally get my license sticker. No more fear of flashing red lights in my rearview mirror. Scott’s been helping non-gearheads like me for decades. He was only 20 when he opened his first repair shop in Oak Park. Scott and his partner, Paul, have been operating Forest Automotive since 1977. Scott is a big fan of Forest Park. But he is not a fan of how the state conducts emissions tests. He believes the testing should be done by local mechanics, not the Illinois Air Team. In New York, for example, drivers bring their cars to their own certified mechanic, who conducts safety and emissions tests. This would save emissions from people driving to Addison and waiting in line. He was a bit resentful that the testing station recommended other mechanics, noting he doesn’t qualify for their list because he fixes cars preemptively before they take the test. These other shops fix the test failures, which is why they are favored by the state. I’m grateful to Scott and the other Forest Park mechanics, who have kept our cars on the road. I’m also relieved that I have two years before my next emissions test. I doubt my Pontiac will still be drivable by then but, with Scott, who knows? ■■John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. He thoroughly enjoys life in the village and still gets a thrill smelling Red Hots, watching softball and strolling through cemeteries.

Second-annual D91 5K draws small but energetic crowd Contributing Reporter

As most locals were either sleeping in or starting weekend errands, a small group of Forest Park residents and District 91 staff members gathered in the morning at Forest Park Middle School on Saturday, Aug. 12, to kick-off the school year with the district’s second annual Back to School 5K. With temperatures in the high 60s around the start of race time at 8 a.m., nearly 50 people made their way to the starting line to either run, walk or cheer on neighbors. Developed by the administration as a way to get the Forest Park community involved with the schools and celebrate area children, Rebecca Latham, D91 public relations/community manager, said the district wanted to bring back the race after 2016’s successful inaugural event. “We think that having events is important because it just brings the community together,” she said. “We wanted to have an event that will help us to kick off the school year and start it in a healthy way and in a

fun way.” Coming in first place at this year’s race was Camilo Medina, a D91 graduate and incoming freshman at Proviso Math and Science Academy. Medina, who has had recent race successes with the Proviso Township Zephyrs Track Club and plans on running competitively in high school, conquered the 3-mile course in 20 minutes. “I think it’s important to participate in the community because I used to be a Boy Scout, and we used to do community service and all that, and I just like participating,” Medina said. Also participating in the race for the first time was Forest Park resident Jessica Clement, who finished second overall with a time of 20:30 and was the first woman to complete the course. “I thought it would just be a nice little speed workout for marathon training,” said Clement, who is training for a marathon next month in Holland, Michigan. While she has no children yet in Forest Park schools (her daughter is 1), she heard about the race from a friend though Face-

Chris Kennedy meets and greets in Forest Park

Candidate for governor has name recognition By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter

Friday evening it was standing room only as about a hundred people squeezed into the Old School Tavern to hear Christopher Kennedy explain why they should support him in his run to become the next governor of Illinois. Kennedy began his stump speech with a short biography: one of 11 children born to Robert and Ethel Kennedy; working on his Uncle Ted Kennedy’s campaign; learning about agriculture while working for Archer Daniels Midland; encountering poverty and hunger as the founder of Top Box; working ALEXA ROGALS/Staff Photographer with the business community as president of the Merchandise Mart; and becoming fa- LEGACY: Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy greets Kaidrea and Jack miliar with issues in education as chairman Stockman, of Oak Park, on Friday, Aug. 11, during a private event at Old School Tavern of the University of Illinois board. and Grill in Forest Park. Hasegawa pointed out that Kennedy seems to be “running against the whole machine in Illinois. He has a lot of obstacles to overcome. I am cautiously optimistic.” Connie Brown resonated with Kennedy precisely for not being part of the machine and noted that although a millionaire himself, he is nowhere near as wealthy as JB Pritzker. “I felt like he cut through a lot of the political rhetoric. He listens very well. I haven’t heard much about him. You get a Pritzker mailing every five minutes.” Many in attendance liked what they heard in their first encounter with the son of Bobby Kennedy, calling him a nice guy, but remained uncommitted. Joel Foster, the current president of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce, spoke for many when he said, “I was impressed. I will definitely follow him. This event was a great opportunity. I’m glad I was able to come out and hear what he had to say, but I haven’t made up my mind.” Rory Hoskins explained why he is backing Chris Kennedy and why he planned and organized the meet-and-greet. “In June I attended two Kennedy for Illinois events and was impressed with the candidate at both. I agreed with his positions and what I think is his vision for Illinois.” Hoskins was impressed enough to propose to Kennedy’s campaign staff an appearance in Proviso Township, got the “go ahead” from the staff, put the word out and the event became a reality. Ted Hosty, who owns the Old School Tavern, said the Kennedy campaign paid nothing for the event, that he closed his business on what is usually a busy Friday night to provide space for the meet-and-greet and that Jon Kubricht paid for the cost of the appetizer. parlor space, and the back party rooms as well. The new color palette, shelving, artwork and lighting have all been included in the scope of services provided.” Another example, of course, is the branding and design work he did on the “See Forest Park” campaign for the Chamber of Commerce, which includes the lamppost banners along Madison Street. Eberline will continue in his full-time job as senior director of customer service at Comp TIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) and will serve in a “supportive role” in the design business. Beginning Aug. 12, everything in the store will go on sale at “drastically reduced” prices. Eberline said he will continue to serve as a board member of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce, chair of the chamber’s Marketing Committee and member of the Economic Development Committee. He said Yearbook will remain the name of the design business and Henry, their

A history of biting from page 1 Although he did not dispute the decision, Miller said losing his partner of three years is “horrible,” noting he spent more time with Killian than he did with his family over that period. Miller also served as handler for two previous Forest Park police dogs, Bear and Diesel. Aftanas said the department has had police dogs on and off since Hammer joined the force in the 1990s. Diesel stayed with Miller after his retirement for medical reasons in 2014. Another police dog named Sam was also on the force for six years between Hammer and Bear. Miller also spoke highly of Killian’s police work. “He was phenomenal, which just makes it harder,” he said, noting Killian apprehended seven or eight suspects; assisted with seizure of $3 million in drug money;

and assisted in the seizure of weapons and drugs, including marijuana, ecstasy, heroin and cocaine. Miller said he and Killian spent over 16 hours per month training to maintain certification from a number of organizations, including the North American Police Work Dog Association and Delaware County in Indiana. Stacey Vanderkam, who lives in Lansing and serves as an officer with the Matteson Police Department, will purchase Killian for $1. Aftanas said Vanderkam, who is a military veteran, met Killian at the kennel where he is staying. Aftanas added he believes Killian will be Vanderkam’s pet and not used for police work. Miller said he made Killian’s availability known to other police departments, two of which expressed interest, but he could not arrange for the animal to continue his law enforcement career. Aftanas said no decision has been made regarding replacing Killian but said he will investigate the possibility. Miller said he’s “pushing” for another police dog, noting, “I love it.”

D209 hires nonprofit to engage community Board unanimously approves $60K contract with Youth Guidance By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

The Proviso District 209 Board of Education on Aug. 8 unanimously approved a $60,000 contract with Youth Guidance, a Chicago-based nonprofit, to help the school district engage with parents and community members. The contract is fully funded through an Illinois State Board of Education grant and is part of the district’s continued push for more integration with the greater Proviso community. As part of that focus on community engagement, the district in June also hired two new parent coordinators, who started working a few weeks ago. Youth Guidance will bring on a “community schools coordinator” who will identify needs within the district, build relationships with local health and social service providers and provide training for Proviso parents “to take on volunteer and leadership roles” in the district, according to documents attached to the August 8 meeting packet. To that end, Youth Guidance will conduct a survey to gauge community needs and interests, which could include GED preparation, adult ESL classes or financial planning, according to board documents. “Youth Guidance is pleased to enter into an impactful Community Schools partnership that allows us to extend our reach, lend our support and offer our expertise in family engagement and afterschool programming to Proviso Township High School District 209,” Will Hobart, chief program

officer at Youth Guidance wrote in an email to the Review. “We look forward to working closely with area schools, parents and families to identify the needs of youth and school communities, and create meaningful opportunities for continued and future success.” Youth Guidance was the only organization to respond to the district’s request for proposal, according to school board documents for the Aug. 8 meeting. Youth Guidance’s original proposal to the school included two part-time family engagement specialists. But, the contract approved Aug. 8 does not include those positions. “We do not need the family specialists, because we have parent coordinators,” District 209 Superintendent Jesse Rodriguez said. “We are already saving money.” Youth Guidance has served Chicago students for decades, and has previously worked with Chicago Public Schools. According to the organization’s website, Youth Guidance began in 1924 as The Church Mission of Help and in 1962 merged with another organization serving boys in family court. Today, the website says, “Youth Guidance is a leading provider of outcome-driven programs and capacity-building initiatives, directly serving more than 8,500 youth while touching the lives of more than 14,000 youth, parents, teachers and community members.” Youth Guidance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides counseling and prevention programs, community and after-school programs and youth workforce development programs.

County commissioners pitch sugary drink tax repeal USDA threatens to withhold food stamp funds By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

Five Cook County Commissioners announced on Aug. 9 that they will support an ordinance to repeal the controversial Cook County penny-an-ounce tax on pre-sweetened beverages. Commissioners Richard Boykin (D-1st), Sean Morrison (R-17th) and Tim Schneider (R-15th) appeared at a press conference Aug. 9 at the County Building to announce their move to repeal the tax. A press release from Morrison stated that Commissioners Jeffrey Tobolski (D-16th) and John Fritchey (D-12th) also support the repeal. Morrison, the chief sponsor, said that his ordinance to repeal the beverage tax will be considered at the next county board meeting on Sept. 13 and encouraged people to attend. “The beverage tax is an absolute disaster for Cook County,” said Morrison whose district includes the central part of Brookfield and all of Riverside. “Residents and businesses are getting punished by it. After witnessing the tremendous fallout and public backlash, I believe there are some on the board who voted to support the tax that could reconsider their original vote and support this repeal.” Boykin, who represents Forest Park and Oak Park, said he opposes the tax because it is regressive, hard to administer and unpopular. “I’m against it because the people are against it,” Boykin said. “I mean my constituents were against it from the beginning. … I think it’s unwarranted and the whole guise about reducing obesity, all of us want to do that, but if we want to do that we’ve got to put the money there.” Tobolski, who represents North Riverside and parts of the north and south ends of Brookfield, also said that the tax was unfair.

File photo

“I know it’s been said over and over and over again, but it’s a tax that targets a very small segment of the population and attempts to balance a deficit on their shoulders,” Tobolski said. The tax was approved in November when Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle broke a tie vote. Since then there is one new commissioner, Dennis Deer (2nd), who replaced Robert Steele, who died in June. Steele was in the hospital when the county board deadlocked 8-8 on the tax before Preckwinkle broke the tie. Even if the repeal passed the county board, it would take 11 votes to override an expected veto by Preckwinkle. In a follow up interview, Boykin admitted that that getting 11 votes for repeal is unlikely. “I think that the only chance you’re going to have for a repeal, quite honestly, is if you have a new president of the county board,” said Boykin, who said that he is considering running against Preckwinkle in the 2018 Democratic primary. Another problem with beverage tax

Let us know we’ll hold your paper!

emerged Aug. 10, when state officials informed Preckwinkle that the way some retailers have been implementing the tax could result in the federal government withholding $87 million in food stamp money. Purchases made with federal food assistance, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are exempt from tax. The sweetened beverage tax is added on to the price of the drink purchased and some retailers, especially small retailers, have not updated their point of sale systems to not charge the tax to those making purchases with SNAP benefits. To get around this problem, the county issued a regulation stating that retailers could ring up the tax and refund the amount of the tax in cash to SNAP purchasers. But the federal government has indicated that charging the tax at all to SNAP purchasers is not permissible. A spokesman for Preckwinkle said on Aug. 10 that the county had worked with the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA), which administers the SNAP

program, in setting up the refund procedure and will continue to work with them to iron out any issues. “It was never our intention in drafting the sweetened beverage regulations to put federal SNAP funding for the state in jeopardy,” said Frank Shuftan, the chief spokesman for Preckwinkle in a statement. “At this time, we believe we are in compliance with existing SNAP rules. We do however recognize that USDA’s powers against the state in this regard are substantial, and we will work collaboratively with both the state and USDA to address USDA’s concerns.” The commissioners say that revenue lost by repealing the beverage tax could be made up for by streamlining county government. “There are alternative means to address those fiscal issues and we plan to present those remedies to President Preckwinkle as she prepares her 2108 budget proposal,” Morrison said. Boykin said that county should improve its procurement process, curtail hiring and save money on legal expenses. He said that that he would also introduce an ordinance at the September 13 county board meeting to require the Cook County State’s Attorney, which represents the county in legal actions, to inform county commissioners of any before filing certain court actions. This is in response to Preckwinkle’s nowwithdrawn motion to seek $17 million in damages from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, which filed a lawsuit challenging the beverage tax and delayed its implementation by a month. The constitutionality of the tax was eventually upheld and the tax went into effect on Aug. 2. “I think when you act like that, it becomes almost as if you’re the monarch,” Boykin said of Preckwinkle’s legal action against the Retail Merchants Association. “If you’re going to use taxpayer money to bind the county to a lawsuit then the commissioners ought to get a say in that. “My problem is that we weren’t even consulted. We found out about it in the newspapers.”

Man reportedly shot during robbery attempt Forest Park police responded to the 1100 block of Elgin Avenue on Aug. 10 about 2:55 a.m. after someone called 911 to report that a 26-year-old man had been shot in the leg during a robbery attempt. The victim told police the gun went off when he slapped the hand of the man pointing the gun at him. He was shot in the left thigh above the knee, said police. The bullet exited the rear of the knee and struck a gray Nissan Sentra in the passenger side door. According to the police report, the victim and two other men arrived in the 1100 block of Elgin Avenue. Two of the men, one of them so intoxicated he needed assistance, got out to walk to a residence. The third man was asleep in the back seat of the car. As the two men exited the vehicle, three vehicles reportedly drove up quickly and boxed them in. Three men, two of them brandishing handguns, reportedly demanded wallets from them. At that time, one of the intended robbery victims slapped the right hand of one of the gunmen, causing the weapon to go off. At that time, the offenders entered their vehicles and fled, according to the police report, without taking anything from the victims. Paramedics took the shooting victim to the hospital for treatment.

However, the biggest story on Madison Street was the appearance of the “Mystery Man.” He was an unidentified male who startled people by handing them $10 bills. He said he was passing out cash to stimulate shopping on Madison Street. One woman refused to accept the sawbuck, because the man had his face hidden “like a bandit.” Generosity of a different kind was displayed by an 11-year-old Girl Scout named Diana Niedholdt. To earn a community service badge, Diana read issues of the Review into a cassette tape-recorder to benefit the blind. She even read the ads! There was another heartwarming story in 1987, though it started out scary. Police dispatcher Linda Shrader was on duty, when her water broke and she went into labor. Linda called the cops from inside the station. Sgt. Joe Byrnes squeezed her hand as the police rushed her to West Suburban Hospital. Linda quickly delivered a healthy boy, Steven Richard Knysch. At the opposite spectrum of life,

former Illinois Governor Sam Shapiro was laid to rest in Jewish Waldheim Cemetery, with Governor Jim Thompson in attendance. Outgoing Mayor Marunde detailed his family’s suffering in Germany during World War II. And Editor Mary Mateer was miffed when the first meeting of the new village council was closed to the public. The Review was in its heyday in 1987 and its voice was best captured by Bob Haeger. His column was breezy, friendly, folksy and funny. No surprise his former reporter felt the need to decorate Haeger’s office for his birthday, in a fashion he described as “crazily.”

A 25-year-old Forest Park woman said she was robbed of her purse and cellphone at gunpoint while she was walking in the 7400 block of Franklin Street about 9 p.m. on Aug. 10. According to police, the victim said a man stepped from some bushes and pointed a silver handgun at her, demanding her purse and phone. The offender fled eastbound and the woman reportedly flagged down a car, which drove her to the Citgo gas station at 7323 Randolph St., where police were notified.

Cellphone snatched at el stop A 47-year-old Forest Park woman called police on Aug. 9 about 7:40 a.m. after someone snatched her cellphone from her hand as she exited a train at the Blue Line stop at 701 Harlem Ave. The offender ran onto the train as it departed. The victim said the incident took place about 6:30 a.m. and she screamed for help, but no one would let her use a phone to call 911. So she walked home and waited for a family member to come home so she could call police. The phone case also contained the victim’s debit card and other identification.

Carwash employee hit with chair A 54-year-old employee at Harlem Randolph Car Wash was taken to the hospital on Aug. 9 about 12:30 p.m. after a fellow employee reportedly hit him over the head with a chair after he admonished the co-worker for smoking cannabis while on the job. The co-worker fled the scene before police arrived, and police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Paramedics took the victim, who suffered a large cut to the back of his head and a large lump on the top of his head, to Rush Oak Park Hospital for treatment.

Don’t leave keys in the ignition! ■■A 68-year-old man called police on Aug. 7 about 9:45 p.m. to report that his black 2010 Chrysler Sebring had been stolen within the last 15 minutes from the driveway of the Softball Hall of Fame in the 7600 block of Harrison Street. The victim stated he’d left the car in the driveway with the keys in the ignition. When he returned, it was gone. ■■A resident of the 900 block of Thomas Avenue called police on Aug. 9 and reported that, during the overnight hours, someone had tried to steal his minivan, which was parked behind his residence. The van had been moved partially into the alley from its parking space. The passenger side front window had been pried open and the ignition had been removed from the steering column.

Overnight vehicle break-ins Forest Park police reported seven overnight vehicle break-ins last week where offenders targeted unlocked vehicles. Six of the vehicles were parked outside; one was inside an open garage. Four of the incidents took place overnight on Aug. 11-12 in the 1100 block of Hannah, 7300 block of Lexington, 800 block of Elgin, and 100 block of Circle. The three others took place overnight on Aug. 9-10 in the 200 block of Desplaines, on Bergman Court and the 200 block of Brown Avenue. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Aug. 7-13, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Back to school

K

udos to our local public schools — both elementary and high school — for the positive outreach each is making this year to welcome students, parents and the community back to school for 2017-2018. Last weekend the District 91 Forest Park Elementary Schools hosted the second annual Back to School 5K. That energetic event was paired with the local Kiwanis and its Kids’ Day celebration held at the middle school. Our elementary schools are working hard to build stronger connections with every aspect of the community. We see it in events like this. We see it in stepped-up communications both within the district and across the village. And how great that the Kiwanians, a fledgling local group, joined in too. Meanwhile this Friday, the Proviso Township High Schools are seriously rolling out the carpet with its B2SB – Back to School Bash. Held in the parking lot at the Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park, B2SB will feature music, rides, food and fun for all families. The Proviso high schools just keep at the effort to foster connections across this township. After decades of paired hopelessness and arrogance, these schools get the steep repair job ahead of them in putting our public schools back on the option list for parents and off the “how are you ripping me off this time?” list for taxpayers. Being open, being honest, being optimistic already is going a long way with the community as they see parents like them seize the school board, and energized administrators taking the reins.

Thanks, Yearbook

Years back we called Yearbook the most perfectly imagined retail store we’d seen in forever. Everything in this well-curated Madison Street shop fit together, and yet it was a store full of perpetual surprises. It was a neat trick that owners Noel Eberline and Jef Anderson pulled off and we loved it. That makes it a tough day when the partners announced last week that they were closing their retail business and will focus instead on their design clients. This is a reflection on the increasing difficulty of making retail work in Forest Park or anywhere else. Stocking and staffing a specialty store, paying the rent and the taxes in a digital age is hard and harder. The good news is that Anderson and Eberline remain committed to Forest Park and will work to relocate the design and graphics business to a new and larger space in town. They have become vital players in our local business community, working with the Chamber of Commerce, particularly in crafting a distinct brand for marketing the village. That is energy and talent we want to see fostered, even as the retail space fades by mid-September.

How to view the solar eclipse

onday is the big day for the solar eclipse. The edge of the moon’s disk will touch the edge of the sun’s disk at 11:54 a.m.; here in Forest Park, 87% of the sun’s disk will be blocked by the moon at 1:30 p.m.; and the edge of the moon’s disk will leave the sun’s disk at 2:42 pm. If you want to see a total eclipse, drive to Carbondale, or if you miss this one, you’ll have a chance to see another eclipse in 2035 — that is, if you go to Asia or an island in the Pacific Ocean because it won’t be visible here. First, a warning. The American Astronomical Society is reminding us that if we don’t want our retinas to be permanently damaged, we should get hold of eclipse viewing glasses with an optical density of 5 or greater. A website called eclipseglasses.com advises that the lenses should block out 100% of ultra-violet and infrared rays and 99% of intense visible light. Kristine McCall, Director of the Cernan Earth and Space Center at Triton College (2000 5th Ave. in River Grove) said she will have 250 pairs for sale at a modest price on Aug. 21 in addition to the following full schedule of activities: ■■ 9:30 a.m. - Ticket Window and Star Store open ■■ 10:30 a.m. - Totality planetarium program - all seats $4.00 ■■ 11 a.m. - Solar observing and indoor and outdoor activities begin - FREE ■■ 11 a.m. - Clavio’s Café Food Cart opens for visitors to purchase ■■ 11 a.m. - Totality planetarium program - all seats $4.00 ■■ 11:45 a.m. - Live streaming video in the planetarium theater - FREE ■■ 12:15 p.m. - Tentative: U.S. Postal Service Solar Eclipse Stamp Unveiling, Free ■■ 1 - 1:30 p.m. - Ticket Window and Star Store closed ■■ 1:45 p.m. - Live streaming video moves to room I-111, Free ■■ 2 p.m. - Dark Side of the Moon laser show (music by Pink Floyd) – all seats $5.00 ■■ 2 p.m. - Clavio’s Café Food Cart closes ■■ 3 p.m. - Dark Side of the Moon laser show, all seats $5 To my mind, there are two ways to approach the viewing of the eclipse: One way I’ll call the scientific way. For example, you can learn that the moon which is only a little more than 2,000 miles across can completely blot out the sun which is 865,000 miles across in an eclipse because of the principle of perspective. The moon is on average a mere 239,000 miles away from our planet while the sun is 93,000,000 miles away from us. The moon, because it is so much closer to Earth, acts like a fan sitting in front of us at a ballgame who keeps standing up, which blocks our view. Even though the guy is maybe 3 feet wide, he can block our view of a field 100 times as wide because he is close to us. If you want to impress your friends with your sci-

entific knowledge, memorize the following explanation of an eclipse which I got from Director McCall. Here goes: The anomalistic month of the Moon, from apogee to apogee, is 27.55 days. 27.55 x 239 cycles = 6,585.54 days. The synodic month of the Moon, from new Moon to new Moon is 29.53 days. 29.53 x 223 cycles = 6585.32 days. The eclipse year of the Sun, the time between when the Sun crosses one of the Moon’s ascending nodes and when the Sun reaches the next ascending node is, 346.62 days. 346.62 x 19 cycles = 6,585.78 days. Got that? Personally, I prefer another way of viewing a natural phenomenon like an eclipse — call it the poetic way of thinking. All of the following are from Director McCall. The Chinese word for eclipse is shih which means “to eat” because they believed the Sun was being eaten by a celestial dragon. They would bang pots and pans, making as much noise as possible to scare the dragon away. Of course, their efforts always worked, but the eclipse was still seen as a bad omen. A myth from India says that a head with no body, named Rahu, seeks revenge on the Sun and the Moon. He occasionally eats them but because he has no body, they always reappear. The story of Rahu spread across China, Siberia, and Mongolia. In Indonesia and Polynesia, he is called Kala Rahun, all head and no body, who eats the sun, burns his tongue and spits the sun

out. A Germanic myth says the Sun and Moon are always quarreling. Every so often they stop fighting long enough to meet, but the peace only lasts a short time. Soon they start quarreling again and go their separate ways. Sometimes the stories are just the opposite, the Sun and Moon are loving husband and wife. Here’s my favorite: The Fon people of Benin in West Africa say the Sun and Moon love each other but are always busy, in motion. They get together whenever they can, which is not often, but when they do, they modestly turn off the light. Martin Buber, in what became a famous book titled, I and Thou, wrote that when we humans interact with anything or anyone, we can experience what we encounter either as an “it” or as a “thou.” For example, a person in the lumber business might look at a Sequoia tree and think, “I wonder how many board feet of lumber are in that tree and how much money I could make by cutting it down.” That’s viewing the tree as an “it.” But I have a friend who, on hearing that the village was going to cut down a dying tree outside of her condo unit, went outside, put her hand on the tree and said goodbye to what had been a real friend of hers for many years. She was relating to the tree as a “thou.” To my mind, the Cernan Earth and Space Center, has the right balance when it comes to the eclipse. If you go there on Monday, you’ll get a lot of scientific facts. But you will also be able to view a laser show with music by Pink Floyd which is designed to make you exclaim, “Oh, wow!” when it’s over.

hildren come from far and wide to Keystone Montessori, a school that has gained the reputation as one of the country’s premier Montessori schools. “The beauty of Montessori education is that it takes into consideration the whole child,” says Vicki Shea, Keystone’s administrative coordinator. “The physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of children are nurtured as well as their academic development and each child is respected as an individual with unique abilities.” If you’re wondering what Montessori education is all about, it’s based on the teachings of Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman doctor who went on to become a renowned educator. From her observations of the natural development of children, she believed that a child’s independence, self-esteem and love of learning could flourish, given the right environment and with guidance from a properly trained teacher. Today, 100 years later, there are Montessori schools all over the world. Keystone has a class for two-year olds, primary classes for 3-6 year olds, junior elementary classes for 6-9 year olds, senior elementary classes for 9-12 year olds and a middle school. There are parent/ infant classes also. One of the hallmarks of Montessori education is grouping together

children of different ages. “In this way children learn from each other,” says Shea. “It also helps the older children learn a sense of responsibility toward the younger ones.” Children learn by working with specially designed ‘materials’ in an ageappropriate environment which stimulates the senses and encourages exploration. The children are busy, each one involved in doing something either individually or in small groups. In one of the primary classrooms a three-year old is mopping the floor, and a five-year old is counting with a bead chain. In the junior elementary classroom a student is researching snakes and in another part of the room, a group of students is analyzing the grammatical parts of a sentence with the teacher. “Many of Montessori’s observations about how children learn have been borne out by recent research showing that children have windows in their development when they can best absorb things like language, music and math,” explains Shea. The school is proud of its consistently high academic achievement but places great emphasis on helping children become wellrounded, responsible members of society. Keystone Montessori is holding an Open House on Thursday, August 31, 3–6 pm. The school is located at 7415 W. North Ave., River Forest. 708/366-1080.

Hello! ¡ Hola! 您好!

A Note from Intercultural Montessori Language School

F

or almost 30 years, Oak Park residents have been driving, biking, and walking by Intercultural Montessori on S. Ridgeland Avenue with smiles on their faces as they watch the children at play. But they might not be aware that Intercultural is the originator of our unique dual-language/Montessori approach to education, providing Spanish/English and Chinese Mandarin/English programs for children aged 3 to 6. It’s an approach that has been imitated but not reproduced, and it has gotten us a lot of positive attention with Montessori schools, teachers, and associations. That’s because it works, and I’m so happy to be a part of creating bilingual, bi-literate citizens of the world right here in Oak Park. As my third year at Intercultural begins, I would like to state how proud I am of the work that the teachers perform on a daily basis. That is where the magic happens, and I’ve found that it is true that the teachers are the soul of the school. As an Intercultural parent, I appreciated how hard the teachers work, but now as an administrator I understand and recognize the many subtle skills the job requires. For example: knowing how to observe constructively, and when, how, and how

much to intervene, is the key secret to a successful Montessori teacher. It’s a talent our teachers have acquired through their Montessori training and years of teaching at Intercultural. I would like to thank our teachers for their hard work, and congratulate them on the continued growth of our dual-language program. As we grow, we continue to improve our school infrastructure at the Oak Park campus, including the installation of a new state-of-the-art security system. This week, the students harvested their first vegetables from our new organic garden! And more upgrades are coming as this new school year begins. It is extremely fulfilling to see Intercultural’s continued growth. To me it means that Oak Park recognizes the value of the unique dual-language education we are providing. From all of us on the Intercultural team, it is our pleasure to serve you, and the children of this vibrant community.

More than any other subject, math has a stigma of being boring and anxiety provoking. At Mathnasium, all the stress is taken out of the process as compassionate instructors work one on one with learners. As owner, Jana Frank explains, “We Make Math Make Sense. Kids don’t hate math, they hate being frustrated and intimidated by it. Our job is to help our students develop number sense so they aren’t just able to do it, but actually understand what they are doing and why. Since we individually assess each student and create a customized learning curriculum for them, we are able to set students up on a path to success.” The staff at Mathnasium works to ensure students are not just learning, but enjoying what they are learning. “Even more important than the math is the attitude and confidence,” says Frank. “We want to make sure every student feels welcome and encouraged to try their best. We will always adjust our teaching methods to

he West Cook YMCA Y-KIDS is a before and after-school program centered around our youth to extend learning beyond the school day. We are committed to nurturing the potential of every child from cradle to career through physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development. We offer extended hours until 7 pm to fit the needs of our families.

I have two children that are benefiting from the scholarship. I have seen extreme positive differences in my children as they are excited every day to be a part of the YMCA. Not only are they happy to be around the community at the YMCA, but they feel as though they are part of a bigger family when there. This gives me peace of mind and comfort as a single parent raising five children. I can trust that the YMCA is giving my children the type of love, care, and security that they would need to feel safe and

protected. I have also noticed they are developing more of a worldview and a sensitivity to the suffering of others. My daughter often talks about wanting to help other people such as homeless or people who do not have enough food. While I understand and believe she has a good heart, I believe the YMCA is definitely playing a part in nurturing this side of her character. Often times, at home, I hear both my son and daughter speak of things that they have learned at the YMCA or conversations they have had with counselors and try to apply the lessons they’ve learned at home. For example, they recently got into an argument and I heard them agree that they would do what the Y had taught them and put aside their differences and come to an agreement. I am truly thankful for being a part of the West Cook YMCA as it has made a very big difference in the lives of my children. -Mom of 2 children in Y-Kids
