The board chose Dr. Bessie Karvelas, a longtime district administrator, as acting superintendent. Karvelas has had multiple roles in the district and most recently was serving as principal at Proviso West High School.

In a statement on the district’s website, Amanda Grant, board president, thanked Karvelas “for stepping up during this challenging time.” The board has

D91 welcomes new principal to Forest Park Middle School

Watson is ready to ‘add to the greatness’

Taking her love for teaching and passion for education to the next level “made sense” for Forest Park Middle School’s new principal Terriyaka Watson, who will be bringing her 27 years of experience into the leadership role for the 202324 school year.

From a young age, Watson, a native Chicagoan, found herself to be the “mom” of the group and often helped out at home with her siblings. At school, she was known as the “teacher’s helper.”

When Watson was around 12 years old, her grandfather, who was a teacher, moved into the family home and as the two bonded, her notion to be an educator grew emulate everything that he did.

“It was the only thing that Watson said. “I wasn’t a sports person, erything about books made sense to me.”

Watson continued her suing an accounting de Illinois University in Carbondale, but it wasn’t long until she was helping the chair of the education programs for teachers as their law assistant. And then changed her major.

“It just clicked, so the next day I ran to the advisor’s office and changed entire major,” Watson said laughing. “It set me back two or three years but it just made sense. The instruction, the teachers, the drive to push students to learn, it was all just there.”

Watson transfer red to in 1995. She began her student teaching career Elementary School in Chicag to 2015.

After her time at Bennett, coach and as an instructional coach sistant principal at Olive cago for the last seven year

“I saw a need, when I was a lead teacher in my o ing, I was that principal go-to,” Watson said, adding she was always encouraged by her colleagues to pursue roles in teacher leadership.

Watson received her master’s in teacher leadership as well as a master’s in instructional leadership.

“There was a need for someone to support the teachers,” Watson said. “I wanted to be that person, that administrator, not just to sit there and sign papers or the runnings of the

school, but I wanted to be that administrator that would sit down with their teachers and brainstorm instructional progresses, support them in what they are doing and how that looks in a classroom.”

While Watson was sad to leave her school home for the past seven years, she is excited to come to D91 for the next chapter in her career.

“I always wanted to work for a small community,” Watson said. “I always dreamed of being in a small district.”

For Watson, D91 embodies the sense of community and togetherness she was looking for, a family unit where everyone works together to strive for a common goal and progress Recalling the interview process, Watson said she loved being interviewed by students.

“The student interview was the best. amazing,” Watson said. “They asked really good questions but they made sure to ask not just questions not to them growing up, but instructions, schedules, after school. That made me think that this was something I would to do.”

Meeting members of the student body helped make the transition a little easier,

As she gets ready for the first day of ich will be Monday, Aug. 21, tson says this year for her is all about listening and learning.

“I am not here to change anything. I am not here to fix anything. I am here to eatness,” Watson said, adding she is going on what she considers her “listening tour” around the building and speaking with w she can support them durtson hopes to make Forest Park Middle at the adults in the commutson said. “They look to their everywhere but us. I want this to be a place where they can begin to trust us and trust the adults ag

With a focus on educating the whole child, Watson is excited to make school a safe and loving place for her students and staf f, as she said they spend more time in school than at home

“I am here to stay,” Watson said. “I lead with data in mind, the best interest of children and families, as well as the best interest of my staf f. Everything is connected.”

Village Council permits Madison Street Corridor per formance venues

It also oks the BABS Comedy Club application

Forest Park village commissioners touted the future BABS Comedy Club as just one of the many signs of the village’s growing arts scene.

During its meeting Tuesday, the Forest Park Village Council approved two ordinances that permit the comedy club to open at 7316 Madison St.

One is a change in the zoning code that will permit performance venues at the Madison Street corridor. The second approves the club’s application to be the first such

venues will be allowed as a “conditional use,” or something that the village reviews on a case-by-case basis. The commissioners said that this will give the village oversight while allowing Forest Park art scene to continue to grow

While the zoning code previously allowed theaters, including movie theaters, to operate in Forest Park commercial areas, it didn’t explicitly permit other perfor mance venues, such as comedy clubs, anywhere in the village. The newly amended zoning code defines a performance venue as “any establishment that, as a primary use, offers live entertainment to the public” and gives “plays, dance performance, concerts, comedy, or musical drama.” as examples. While the code is framed to allow some flexibility, one thing it explicitly doesn’t allow under the definition of “perfor mance venue” is any venues where performances regularly feature “nudity or semi-nudity,” The For-

nudity” as “the appearance of the female breast below a horizontal line across the top of the areola at its highest point.

Commissioner Ryan Nero said that he supported the change because it “just speaks to the evolution of Madison Street and Forest Park.”

“We’re always looking at the way to improve the menu of services in town, especially with entertainment, and this agenda item is one of the great ways to do that,” he said.

Commissioner Maria Maxham said that making performance venues conditional use was the right approach, because it “allows the village to still have control.” And she didn’t shy away from the fact that, as a Forest Park Arts Alliance board member, she was “a little bit biased” in favor of anything that can grow the village’s art scene “Nobody can just come in and say — we’re going to have some kind of performance venue,” Maxham said. “It has to go through Planning and Zoning

AND FORGET IT! SHRED IT

agree with Commissioner Nero, that Forest Park is kind of on an arts roll, we have a lot of cool things going on, and I’d like that for Madison Street.”

As previously reported by the Review, BABS (a reference to a Saturday Night Live sketch) comedy club will offer comedy classes, host comedy shows and provide a space for comedy writers to hone their skills. Maxham said she was pleased that owner Emily Ramirez was buying the building where the club would be located, which shows her commitment to Forest Park

“I think this is fantastic. I think it will draw residents and visitors from out of town and would be something for our village to take pride in,” she said.

Commissioner Jessica Voogd said that she was impressed with Ramirez’s business plan, while Nero said that having a comedy club was a good fit for the cor ridor.

Scarecrows are back! Time to place your order

Historical Societ y, Ar ts Alliance hope to sell 300 this year

It was a marriage made in heaven. The image of a scarecrow bride and groom in front of a church in Chester, New Hampshire. That town’s historical society has sold scarecrow kits as a fundraiser for 10 years. The town of 5,000 is now displaying over 1,000 each fall.

Uli Lieb found the photo on a now-defunct Facebook page called “View from My Window.” It inspired her to present the idea to the Historical Society of Forest Park in 2021. The society found the perfect partner for the project with the Forest Park Arts Alliance.

Lieb, who serves as the historical society treasurer, recalled that 100 scarecrow kits were sold that year. The kits contained two 8-foot lengths of wood that were cut to size by volunteers, Geoff Binns-Calvey and Jason Maxham. The kits also contained a burlap head, plastic for stuf fing, a paint kit and a set of instructions.

There will again be a map of Forest Park showing the locations of the scarecrows Ones from past years can be included on the map for $10. There will be a bike tour in October to visit them. Sales of the kits are already underway. The scarecrows will be displayed during the entire month of October. Residents can cast their votes for the most impressive scarecrows. Prize winners will be announced in November

The scarecrow invasion unleashed the creativity, artistry and inventiveness Forest Parkers are known for. Inspiration came from many sources including village history. There were four categories of prizes: For People’s Choice (The Golden Girls); Forest Park Pride (Firefighter); Most Historic (Adolph Luetgart, the Sausage King) and Most Artistic (Scarecrow with Watering Can). Winners received large, impressive gift baskets stocked with gift certificates for local businesses

Since that first year, the invasion has only grown. In 2022, 200 kits were sold and 300 will be available this year. To order a scarecrow kit, residents can visit forestparkhistory.org or forestparkarts.org

The kits are for sale on the websites and can be picked up at the Garage Galleries event on Aug. 26. The pickup location at Garage Galleries is at 1110 Thomas. The kits are $35 but can be upgraded to $50 to have a local artist paint the face. Businesses and individuals can also pay $200 for a fully designed and decorated scarecrow.

Lieb’s first creation depicted Hannah and Ferdinand wearing lederhosen and holding steins. Others have displayed Hansel and Gretel, Sonny and Cher and Bernie Sanders. Local history was highlighted with the Bloomer Girls, Emma Goldman and Showman’s Rest. There has also been artistry with portraits of The Scream and The Girl with the Pearl Earring. The level of creativity has been off the charts.

The sale of scarecrows has also been a proven fundraiser for the historical society and arts alliance. Last year, these org anizations each received $1,300. Lieb is hoping the organizations can earn $1,800 apiece this year. So, if residents wish to “Wile away the hours” making scarecrows. Their creations can stand on their front lawns “Conferrin’ with the flowers and Consultin’ with the rain.”

Former Moran’s Garage property sold in tax sale

New owner may either rehab the property or sell it to developer

An investor purchased the long-vacant Moran’s Garage auto re pair shop property at 7505 Randolph Ave. — but he is in no hurry to decide what he’s going to do with it.

Jose Joseph, of north suburban Northbrook, acquired the land the same way he bought lots of properties — through a scavenger tax sale — in order to either lease it out or sell it to a developer and make profit.

Moran’s Garage ended up in a scavenger sale after the owner Denis Moran didn’t pay property taxes between 2011 and 2018. Once the property gets sold on the scavenger sale, the owner has three years to pay of f the debt — otherwise, the property goes to whoever submitted the highest bid.

According to the Cook County records, the Office of Cook County Treasurer officially transfer red the deed to Joseph on July 20. He said that he hasn’t made up his mind whether he would fix up the property and lease it to another auto re pair shop or sell the land to the developer. But any redevelopment would most likely have to deal with remediation — Moran’s Garage was a gas station until 1981, and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency usually requires the developer to check if there’s contamination from the underground gasoline storage tanks and to remediate any contamination that may turn up.

Moran’s Garage opened a Standard Oil gas station in 1966 before becoming an auto mechanic shop in 1981. Moran himself had been active in the community, he spent decades with the Forest Park Kiwanas, earning the Ed O’Shea Service award in 2011 for his work with area youth. He died in 2020.

In recent years, Bruce Lawn Service, a Forest Park lawn-mowing, landscaping and snow removal company, listed the garage as its business address and stored lawnmowers and other equipment in front of the building. While the company had since moved away, Joseph said that at least some equipment was there when he got the deed.

The scavenger tax sale program is set up to try to get properties that owe several years’ worth of property taxes back on the tax rolls. The taxes are auctioned of f, and the highest bidder takes over the responsibility for paying taxes. If the property owner doesn’t pay of f the debt, the title gets transfer red to the tax buyer.

A not-fond farewell to an unloved supt.

This is a letter I sent to District 209 Superintendent Henderson upon hearing of his resignation:

Dear Superintendent Henderson, Ah, the news of your resignation — what a shock it must be to those who mistook your tenure for leadership. Allow me to reflect on the “legacy” you leave behind in Proviso.

Long-Term Solutions? Your commitment to longterm solutions was truly something to behold — if only we could find any. Perhaps they’re hiding somewhere, just waiting to be discovered by your successor Quitting with Style? Your resignation is a master class in quitting when the going gets tough. It’s almost inspiring how you managed to abandon ship with such flair.

Financial Wizardry? The financial decisions under your watch were nothing short of magical. Who else could turn $500 into cupcakes delivered from Hammond, Indiana and call it fiscal responsibility? Bravo!

Renaming Places, a Tribute or a Favor? Renaming the football stadium for Theresa Kelly and the proposed renaming of two places in honor of Kimberly Lightford and Chris Welch certainly raised eyebrows. What’s up with that? A touching tribute or a master class in palm-greasing? Only time will tell.

In that same vein, I’d like to propose renaming the trash/dumpster area at each school “The Henderson Innovation Center.” It’s a fitting tribute, don’t you think? A place where discarded ideas and failed leadership can find a home.

According to county records, Moran owed $17,795 in taxes, and the property was actioned of f in the scavenger sale. Moran’s family did not respond by deadline.

Joseph said that he didn’t set out to buy the auto shop specifically — it just happened to be one of the properties that turned up on the tax sale. But now that he has it, he believes it has potential that would allow him to make profit one way or another.

“I buy property in a tax sale, mostly commercial,” Joseph said. “It seems like a good corner store in that area.”

His first priority, he said, was to clean up the property. Joseph said that he reached out to the company asking them to remove it themselves, to no avail.

“The property was really ugly, with all the stuf f there,” he said.

Beyond that, he said that he was waiting for a 30-day period when Moran’s family can file an appeal before deciding what he would do with the property. And even after the 30-day period, Joseph said it may be a few weeks before he makes the decision.

“I was trying to actually fix it up,” he said. “Maybe fix it and rent it out or something. Put up an auto shop. Or maybe find a buyer right away, a developer.”

A Lesson in Transparency, Henderson style: Your approach to transparency was truly innovative. By keeping everything so well hidden, you’ve given us all a lesson in what not to do

Holmes County 2.0: Your departure has left some wondering if we’re witnessing Holmes County 2.0. Troubled districts seem to follow you like a shadow It’s almost like a talent. If history has taught us anything, I’d recommend that the Henderson 5 doesn’t delete any documents as I’m sure investigations and audits will follow.

Your departure is indeed a momentous occasion. You will not be missed. Proviso can now look forward to leadership that might actually involve leading. Your unique approach to gover nance will be remembered, studied, and hopefully never repeated Best of luck in your future endeavors, Superintendent Henderson. May they be as “successful” as your time here in Proviso. And remember, “The Henderson Innovation Center” will always be a part of our community — right next to the recycling bins.

With all the sincerity I can muster,

said that having an acting superintendent would allow it time to vet either an interim or per manent superintendent.

Closing out a contentious three years as head of the troubled district, Henderson struck a conciliatory tone in his resignation letter to the Proviso community.

“I want to let you know how much I appreciate our time to gether over the past three years,” wrote Henderson. He thanked administrators, teachers and instructional staf f for their commitment to the Proviso community

Grant, president of the D209 school board, last week told the Village Free Press “It is time for District 209 to go in a new direction. We are working diligently be hind the scenes to make sure we have a great star t to our school year. We have all the necessary suppor t for students and staf f in place.”

Henderson joined the district in August 2020 after serving two years as super intendent in Holmes County Mississippi. Henderson was welcomed to the district by the board of education with a three-year contract and a salary of $250,000.

A year later, in June 2021, a five-year contract — and a salary increase of $12,500 — was approved by a board that was beginning to fracture, with board members Amanda Grant and Claudia Medina voting against the item. The new contract also came with an undisclosed pension contribution, coverage of annual health premiums in the amount of $32,129, and a $6,000 per year contribution to his vehicle allowance among other benefits

During his time as superintendent, Henderson faced growing scrutiny from members of the community, faculty and staf f as well as a portion of the school board.

In June 2022, the board of education, at the time consisting of then president Arbdella Patterson, Theresa Kelly, Rodney Alexander, Sam Valtierrez, Ned Wagner, Amanda Grant, and Claudia Medina, approved a third contract for Henderson by a vote of 4-2, with Grant and Wagner voting against the item. Medina was absent from the meeting

Despite the new contract, Henderson faced deeper questions from members of the community as well as board members who be g an questioning the financial state of the district as well as the friction caused by the 2022 teachers strike.

In a Letter to the Editor of the Forest Park Review published on March 14, 2023, then board member Grant expressed her concer ns about how Henderson and other board members handled financial matters.

“Additionally, tens of thousands of dollars are spent on district credit cards each month with no transparency or accountability of these charges,” Grant wrote

Following the teachers strike in 2022, when approximately 280 members of the Proviso Teachers Union went on strike to ne gotiate better wages and work conditions under their collecti

ship that would hold Henderson accountable in hopes of fixing issues plaguing the three high schools in the district.

Transparency over fiscal matters was a top priority, Ocampo said in a previous interview back in May.

Upon the swearing in of the new b oard, Grant became the b oard president and be g an reinstating the use of c ommittees, wh ich Henderson alle gedly had a hand in dismantling

In a May 2023 interview, Ocampo said the new board members would be willing to work with Henderson but that the quality of that relationship would ultimately fall on Henderson himself

“We are going to put for th a goal list and you can plan for everything but if no one executes against it, then something needs to change,” Ocampo had said. “The board needs to set the standard.”

In his resignation letter, Henderson thanked the “Henderson Five,” saying “we got the work done because of you.”

ag reement, many called for Henderson’s removal from his post.

Despite facing criticism, Henderson seemed to have nearly unconditional suppor t from the so-called “Henderson Five,” which was composed of five board members: Patterson, Alexander, Wagner, Kelly and Valtier re z.

However, Henderson lost that majority vote during the April 4 Consolidated Election when three new board members were voted onto the board re placing Kelly and taking over Wa gner’s empty seat. Medina, who had openly criticized Henderson and was involved in a heated incident with Henderson in March 2022, also lost her seat on the board as three newcomers, David Ocampo, Sandra Hixson, and Jennifer Barbahen’s Proviso 209 United slate made it a clean swee p, over tur ning the board majority and dismantling the “Henderson Five.”

The slate mates had been vocal in expressing a desperate need for new leader-

In June 2023, the board of education conducted the first superintendent evaluation since Henderson was hired back in 2020. That evaluation came during a closed session. Due to it being personnel matter the evaluation was not made public Grant said she was unable to comment on the matter.

“Most of you worked to educate our scholars,” Henderson wrote in his resignation letter “Thank you for all you’ve done — and all you’ ll continue to do — to help the students of District 209 graduate prepared to succeed in a global community.”

Additionally, Henderson thanked the food service staf f, transpor tation, maintenance, safety and security staf f, central of fice staf f, and his executive leadership team composed of Dr. Sharon Williams, L.T Taylor, Luke Pavone, Leonard Moody, Calvin Davis, and Kristi Vandenbroak.

“I couldn’t have done this without you,” Henderson wrote

“Thank you for your help, your ef for ts and your steadfastness,” wrote Henderson, closing of f his farewell letter to Proviso. “I wish you nothing but the best.”

Henderson was not able to be reached for comment.

That’s not as “duh” as it sounds: Talk had buzzed about merging District 209’s teams. But that’s off the table — at least for this season.

The idea of a merger was circulated on social media by Coach Scottie Ware, head coach at Proviso West.

Ware, an East alum, and longtime district coach, has gained attention from the Proviso community for pushing the consolidation of the two teams. For some, the teams’ rivalry is too exciting to end. For others, a merger is the only thing that will give these student athletes a fighting chance to win.

“One thing about this, I went to Proviso East, if you would have asked me 10 years ago if I would have ended up being the coach at West, I laughed Ware. “When ou take the emotions out of and what all traditions…this is a nobrainer and

In a Letter to the Editor of the Fo view, Joseph Radecki, a teacher at East agreed

“The kids deserve a chance to compete, and by consolidating they will have just that,” Radecki wrote. “Successful football programs today rarely have two-way players and we cannot continue to expect our student-athletes to perform when they are simply tired.”

Ware presented his petition merger during a July board of education meeting, demonstrating a marked growth in the Hispanic student population.

LaGrange group seeks volunteers to help complete mural project

Community Center artwork celebrates diversity of village’s east side

Since 1994, the CommUNITY Diversity Group of LaGrange’s mission has been to educate area residents on how the area’s diversity in racial, ethnic and religious affiliation of neighbors enriches the community.

Over the past three decades, the nonprofit has worked both to advocate for people of colors in the greater La Grange area and remind the majority white population of issues often ing them, whether due to racism, poverty or other isolating factors.

By hosting educational workshops with schools, elected officials and civic groups, annual Diversity Days featuring movie screenings and discussion on race, the annual “Race Unity Rally” each September at LaGrange Village Hall and sponsoring small educational scholarships for children who complete community service hours for area agencies in need, the organization involves LaGrange residents, re presentatives from local churches and friends from neighboring Brookfield and LaGrange Park

In an ef fort to create a permanent visual reminder of the beauty of that diversity, CommUNITY Diversity Group of La Grange, or CDG, is in the midst of creating

a large mosaic mural at The Community Center, 200 S. Washington Ave., operated by the Park District of LaGrange.

The Community Center — a beloved historic facility that offers park district programming and hosts everything from baby and wedding showers to family reunions, church services and after-school programs — lies smack-dab in the middle of what the organization calls “the culturally rich east side of LaGrange.”

Nancy Bramson, a Brookfield resident who has been a member of CDG for the past five years, says the location encapsulates the past, present and future of the neighborhood, and is exactly what the group was looking for in order to create a unique, community-driven permanent art installation telling the story of the historic neighborhood.

“The Community Center neighborhood in the mid-20th century was a majority African American neighborhood , due in large part to redlining,” she said. “It is a historic neighborhood that has been home to many local activists and leaders, and has always been a proud, self-sufficient and vital contributor to the distinctiveness of this extraordinary community — despite its long history of disinvestment, discrimination and se gregation.”

In 2021, through research and interviews of residents, CDG created the African Americans in Early La Grange Walking Tour, and in 2022, the CDG’s CommUNITY Arts Committee launched the mural project as just another new way of bringing more awareness both to the Community Center and the neighborhood.

“The Arts C ommittee uses a c onsensus decision-making process to ensure the c ontent presented to the public is re presentative of residents and the mosai c project’s mission and vision of bringing unity to the L aGrange area through the powe r of art by building relationships through c ollaborative art projects and eng aging activitie s, ” Bramson said.

This p ast s pring, with guidance from the Green S tar Movement — a Chicagob ased public art initiative with the pu rp ose of revitalizing u rban neighbo rhoods through teamwork — C DG held two d esign wo rkshop s, bringing to g ether more than 30 pa rt icipants and yieldin g an eight-panel d esign sharing the stor y of the c ommunity as told by the c ommunity

Wi th a theme titled “The C ommunity C enter: Past-Present-Future, ” the project will focus on collecti ve images wh ich are cu rrently being turned i nto p anels to be tiled by volunteer s.

From discussions at the d esign wo rkshop s, imagery of a tree was a c ommon theme, and decided upon as being the thread that c onnects the mural. Th e overall d esign will begin with roots, c ontinue with c ommunity c onnections, or outstretched hand s, and end with a frui t tree. Other elements will be unve i led when the mural is completed this fall.

According to Bramson, f eedback from the d esign wo rkshops proved that the project has b een a p ositive c ommunity

PROVIDED

experienc e.

“Some expressed that they we re ins pired, uplifted and enlightened,” she said. “Community perspect ives we re valued, and we all learned a little something about each other.”

Fo r l ifelong L aGrange resident Bernadine Sim s, g etting involved in the mural project was a no-brainer. N ot only d oes she d escend from the first Black f amily who move d i nto L aGrang e, but she live s in a home on one of the f amily ’s o riginal proper ties on the village ’s east side “I wanted to g et involved because it ’s a b eautifying point,” she said. “A lot of the c ommunity takes pa rt in activity at the c enter, and to have something pretty there that reminds them of the unity that we ’re t rying to inco rp orate in the area is a good thing.”

T hough the wo rkshops included mostly L aGrange and Brookfield pa rt icipants, for its upcoming tile-laying wo rkshops in Au g ust and Se p tember, C DG is recr uiting w idely and welcomes residents from all neighboring c ommunities with the g oal of making new friends all wh i le becoming a pa rt of a community art stor y. Wo rkshops will be held Au g. 22 through Au g. 30 and Sept. 9 at the C ommunity C enter. A ll are one-hour sessions open to pa rt icipants over the age of 9. Fired employee allegedly left death threats, obscene voicemails

A man who for merly worked at Ferrara Candy Company, 7301 Harrison St., alle gedly left death threats and graphic messages on a supervisor’s voicemail after he was asked to leave work early — and the messages only intensified after he was fired, according to police.

On July 15, the man re por tedly was involved in a “safety incident” and was asked to go home for the rest of the day. While he left peacefully and agreed to come back the following day, according to police, he left multiple voicemail messages threatening bodily harm against the manager. He was fired on Aug. 1. Since then, he alle gedly left more threatening messages.

Ferrara re ported the threats to the police on Aug. 7. By that point, the fired employee had left over 100 messages, said police, who attempted to contact him without success. The officers advised the manager to call

the police if they see the man’s car on near the plant.

Battery

A woman fired from Appleton Care supportive housing facility, 8200 Roosevelt Rd., alle gedly punched an employee who delivered the news while waiting for another coworker to get a pizza she left in the fridg e.

On Aug. 10, at around 2:45 p.m., the victim told the woman that she was fired, and asked her to leave the premises. The fired worker asked another worker to get her the pizza she had left in the employee fridge.

As the victim and the ex-employee waited, the latter re por tedly “became increasingly irate.” Worried about her safety, the victim left the lobby and the ex-employee ran after her, re por tedly hitting the victim several times. The ex-employee then ran

leaving for work at around 8 a.m. When he came home at around 6:45 p.m., he noticed that the front door bolt lock was unlatched, and the balcony door was unlocked.

A laptop valued at around $150 and a personal safe containing his Social Security card, a COVID-19 vaccination card a prop gun was missing, but everything else was undisturbed.

OPINION

Good riddance to Henderson

We await the reporting on just what James Henderson will walk away with following his resignation last week as superintendent of the District 209 Proviso Township High Schools.

Given the absurd generosity of the past school board in regularly extending his contract, we imagine it will be a substantial sum of money

And within reason, we say, money well spent. Good work by Amanda Grant, school board president, and her colleagues

The man had to go. And getting him on his way before the imminent start of the new school year offers a calming and clarifying moment as this school district, with its self-inflicted chaos, seeks to fully focus on students.

James Henderson was a narcissistic grifter. We had him pegged from his first days in this district three years ago. Given his stupefying career in educational leadership as he hopscotched the country from one job to another, it remains a mystery how he was ever hired in District 209.

Focusing only on his short, stor my tenure in Holmes County, Mississippi, his last stop before Proviso Township, it should have been plenty to send the previous incarnation of the D209 school board back to its search process.

It didn’t. And the previous board majority allowed Henderson to do a lot of damage to this fragile school district. Insider hires for key consulting posts. A debilitating teachers strike followed an unnecessarily hostile approach to frustrated faculty A disrespectful attitude toward families in the district. Questions about accountability on spending. Buses that didn’t run on time Security that did not make anyone feel safe. Instability in leadership ranks.

It has been a dismaying three years.

It had to end and the school board gets credit for forcing the issue.

The board also gets credit for its decision to hire an acting superintendent rather than an interim. And in choosing Bessie Karvelas for that post the board put in place a steady force with long history in this district. Karvelas has most recently served as principal at Proviso West, but we long admired her work as principal of the Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park. She is just what this district needs in the immediate term.

By naming her “acting,” the board gives itself time to vet potential interim superintendents as it considers its single most important decision, which will be to hire its single direct report, the next superintendent. Perhaps Karvelas might take on the interim title. She and the board will figure that out.

Meanwhile, school is about to start. And it will be a fresh start without Henderson’s heavy hand and propensity for divisiveness

This is all fairly simple. Focus on kids. Give them love and support, a safe place, a challenging curriculum with high expectations whether their next stop is college or a job path. Better days ahead.

Iam not sure if someone else in town is trying to grow a giant pumpkin, but if you are looking for competi tion, you are likely to win this year. I planted three mounds of giants including the seed liberated from a giant pumpkin at the farmers market last fall and there is only one plant still going. That one plant finally flowered last week, so it’s not on pace with the big boys who are going to the state fair I started several pumpkins indoors this spring before the last frost and lost some when I hardened the plants of f. Only one survived through a week or two of transplanting. The early star t was supposed to get a leg up on the growing season for the pumpkin, but after the frost I started a few more mounds with new seeds.

WAGNER

Pumpkin 1 was planted near the fence in full sun, near my horseradish plants. It was clearly a strong plant, a vigorous vine with robust leaves that were growing every day. They took a turn out of my yard and the vine moved its way into the neighbor’s yard. My neighbor welcomed the delightful prospect of sharing the parental responsibilities of a giant pumpkin, and she ag reed to joint custody. Unfor tunately, the vine that stretched down her sidewalk took a tur n for the worse and has been sent to the compost.

Pumpkin 2 was also planted near the fence. Last year the knife sharpener shared a few seeds from the giant pumpkin he purchased at the neighboring booth that was selling 100-pound pumpkins at the far mers market. After he sliced his big boy for a giant carving, he kindly shared some seeds for me to try this year. This special plant might not be in the best soil, as the progress has been slow, and the plant is just small. I wonder if the seed was swapped, because this pumpkin plant is just not a mover. But several flowers have invited many visit-

ing bees in the past week so plump bulbs should be showy as it has climbed the fence and the fruit will ked into the Pumpkin 3 has started taking over my thout a dog, the vines have the er they feel best. eat Atlantic pumpkin are creeping their shade makers rd. Many flowers have been pollinated and soon the selection of pumpkin will be made. growing giant pumpkins is a sport. The casual pa rticipation at improving the fitness of a gourd through natural elements and personal interventions like shading, sheltering, feeding, pruning, watering over the course of a summer for competition is a spor t. Unlike cheerleading and marching band, which are “activities,” growing a giant pumpkin for competition, that’s a real spor t.

I have a goal of beating the size of my pumpkin from last year. It was featured in my Scarecrow Invasion — “It’s a Great Pumpkin,” in front of my house last year Maybe you were the one person who voted for it in the Historical Society and Ar ts Alliance Invasion competition last year. It was the 45-pound pumpkin centerpiece, rising out of our front yard at Linus van Pelt’s feet. While a feather in the scheme of giant pumpkins, my pumpkin pride is still shining.

This sporting year I hope to raise a pumpkin bigger than last year and one day, maybe a forklift will have to come to move my pumpkin to the front yard. In the meantime, if any other local athletes in town are also committed to the pumpkin growing sport, please share your progress re port with me and if you are willing, to all the readers of the Review.

Fall is here. I can see the signs

Here are my predictions for my favorite season — fall.

National security experts will worry about a dangerous drop in the country’s cinnamon reserves.

Climate change deniers will insist that “winter” is a hoax perpetrated by the mitten industry.

Psychologists will be unable to explain the seasonal urge to wear orange.

Sweet potatoes will be in a panic, while eggnog starts to worry.

Teachers are looking forward to their 15-minute lunches and other brief breaks from their busy schedules.

For safety reasons, flying wedge kickof f retur ns will be eliminated from family football games.

Sales of rakes will plummet, as more and more students are assigned to collect leaves.

Students will have to adjust their sched-

ules by skipping 3 a.m. snacks and rising before noon.

Human rights advocates will decry Thanksgiving as a celebration of genocide, while animal rights advocates will claim it’s a celebration of turkey-cide.

Those who celebrate an extra hour of sleep when they “fall back” will complain when it’s getting dark right after lunch.

More and more doctors will recommend the all-bratwurst diet because this time of year we need food that “sticks to our ribs.”

The road that goes “over the river and through the woods” will be closed for construction.

Parents are worried that their kids’ reading the backs of cereal boxes will not meet the requirements of the summer reading program.

Canning will increase in popularity as more Americans tire of eating dry dog food.

A LOOK BACK IN

Teachers are gearing up for disruptive students and their demanding parents.

People who savor their pumpkinflavored latte will discover that pumpkin spice doesn’t contain a trace of pumpkin. Yellow jackets will be looking forward to Oktoberfest celebrations.

Traditional school supplies like textbooks, notebook paper and pens are no longer necessary for students who have everything they need on I-Pads.

The scariest Halloween costume will be “Dean of Discipline.”

The fashion industry will be touting their latest line of ugly sweaters. We will be missing summer. A sign at a local business sums it up: “Was it just me, or did June and July last five minutes?”

The World Series will end just before they drop the puck for the Winter Classic. Wearing long underwear will once again be a fashion statement.

With the sun at a low angle, drivers will wish they had cleaned their windshields. My five-year-old grandson wants a new ?

Postcards give glimpse into illusionist mystery

Postcards were used to message friends and families before the telephone. Today, many of the photo graphs that have survived of the Forest Park Amusement Park, are from postcards. The Forest Park Amusement Park opened at DesPlaines and Har rison in 1908, during the golden age of postcards.

This postcard from 1914 features The Mysterious Chesters — Harry and Blanche. The pair, Harry dressed in a tuxedo and Blanche dressed in a turban and robes inspired by the east would have been typical for illusionists of the time. We do not know who the Mysterious Chesters were or their perfor mance but it was likely very popular at the park

Harry Houdini, in New York, was very popular this same year and perfor med his famous Battery Park Escape — where he was shackled in a box thrown in the water in front of an estimated crowd of 15,000.
