Home Owners Bargain Outlet, also known as HOBO, is set to open Sept. 1 in Forest Park Plaza, 7630 W. Roosevelt Road.

The discount home improvement store has half a dozen other stores spread across the Chicago area and Wisconsin. But Forest Parkers may not be familiar with HOBO. The other Chicago-area spots — in Oak Lawn, Waukegan, Villa Park and Crest Hill — are not nearby. The company, founded over

two decades ago, plans to hire as many as 100 new employees, according to Scott Werner, a vice president at HOBO. “It’s one of our largest locations,” Werner said, referring See HOBO on page 5

One of the last remaining rides from Forest Park’s legendary Amusement Park — open from 1908 to 1922 — is undergoing a $1 million restoration and is set to debut at the Memphis Children’s Museum in November. The restoration is the latest turn in the decades-long history of the carousel, which was sent back to its manufacturer for repairs, Philadelphia-based G.A. Dentzel Company, after a fire at the park in 1922. The carousel, Company one of the most popular rides at the Amusement Park, has not been in town for many years but it is a historic Forest Park artifact. “One of the things we were missing here was being able to teach about historic preservation and just the story about this national treasure. It’s really unique,” Art See CAROUSEL on page 4

How can you tell if you’re in the wrong job?

wise man told me how to determine whether you have a good job. Is the atmosphere healthy or toxic? Is the boss yelling and the employees fearful of losing their jobs or is management supportive? Is the work challenging but not too challenging? Is it satisfying? Is the pay sufficient for the level of responsibility? I surveyed three American workers about their jobs. To protect their identities, I’m using their initials. The first is D.T. He is 71 years old and has just embarked on a brand new career. Here are his answers: “Toxic? Well, I’ll admit that I’m constantly yelling at my employees and they are all terrified of losing their jobs. I fire people regularly. You call that ‘toxic.’ I call it business as usual. “I’ll admit the job has been challenging. I didn’t know how difficult it would be to overhaul an entire health care system, ban immigrants and get another country to pay for our border wall. But it hasn’t been too challenging. I’ve accomplished more in seven months, than my predecessors did in eight years. “It hasn’t been very satisfying so far. I got my pick for the Supreme Court and signed

a slew of executive orders. But due to the incompetents around me and the fake critics, I haven’t accomplished everything that I wanted. Still, I should be on the $20 bill by now. “The pay is pathetic. I used to make billions; now I make nada. Plus, the job requires me to live in a drafty old house, instead of my luxury suite!” Based on his answers, D.T. is definitely in the wrong job. Our next respondent is J.K. He is 36 years old and coincidentally also embarked on a brand new career only seven months ago. Here are his responses: “I married the boss’ daughter, so I wouldn’t have to work a day in my life. But my father-in-law got this new job and he hired me to help. I wouldn’t call the atmosphere toxic. Sure, he yells all the time and there’s constant backstabbing. But it reminds me of the good old days at my D.T. dad’s company. “The job is challenging because my father-in-law put me in charge of everything on the planet. I’m responsible for bringing about Middle East peace and government reform. I’m supposed to end the opioid crisis while I reform the criminal justice system. I’m

also our liaison to Mexico, China and the Muslim community. “I’m getting satisfaction from seeing my enemies fired but not much else. “The money, though, is ridiculous. I’m worth 200 million. Now, I get paid zilch for solving most of the world’s problems.” J.K. also appears to be in the wrong job. Finally, we have J.R. He’s 63 years old and has been stuck in the same career, as an investigator, for almost 40 years. “I’m self-employed, so it’s tough to admit the atmosphere is toxic. I don’t actually yell at myself except if I misplace the car keys or can’t find my reading glasses. I hate my boss, though. He has no concept of personal time. He thinks nothing of having me work weekends, holidays and evenings. I only get a week’s vacation — unpaid. I don’t get any sick days, even after major surgeries. I only get a half hour for lunch.” “The work is like Mission Impossible, finding people with only their first name, or no name at all. It’s way too challenging.” “It is very satisfying, though, when I locate the criminal or deadbeat I’m looking for. As for the pay, I have to become a collection agency to get my invoices paid.” J.R. needs to retire. Happy Labor Day! ■■John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. Council gives go ahead to new 4-unit townhome Additional $180,000 also approved for Roosevelt construction By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

A new four-unit townhome development at 233 Des Plaines Ave. took another step forward Aug. 28, following approval by the Forest Park Village Council. The council unanimously approved the site plan, final plat of subdivision and a zoning variation for Gordon/Jones LLC to the unusually-shaped, 13,528-square-foot property, which has been vacant for over 10 years and a “home for weeds for years and years,” according to Village Administrator Tim Gillian. The plot’s shape is caused by the angled frontage of the lot on Desplaines Ave., an offset of 20 feet. The village had allowed the previous owner to build a seven-townhome development on the property but the project was stopped after it was started, according to Gillian. Foundations for the previous project will have to be removed, he added. “The big goal was to get the site filled with less density,” Gillian said. “We wanted the frontage to match the neighborhood. “ The project will include a pair of two-

unit townhomes, each with three floors, and parking for eight vehicles, two per unit. The developer said the target market would be so-called “empty nesters” or young professionals without children. Gillian said no opposition to the project was voiced during hearings of the Plan Commission or the Zoning Board of Appeals. Both bodies unanimously recommended the project be approved. In his memo to the Plan Commission, Steve Glinke, director of public health and safety, said the village has spent “considerable time and effort” enforcing minimum property maintenance standards from the previous owner. He referred to the reduction in density as an “attractive feature” in the development and noted the new project would provide more green space. In other official action Aug. 28, the council also approved five change orders for the Roosevelt Road streetscape project, increasing the cost of the project by $180,000. The change order with the biggest impact—$141,000.00—calls for including electric and water on the medians. The other

change orders include a changeable message board, temporary pavement marking tape, additional storm sewers for utility conflicts and additional electrical conduit pipe. In response to questions from Commissioner Dan Novak, Gillian said village officials did not include electric and water in the medians in the recently completed Madison Street streetscape project and admitted they wish they had. “We just didn’t think of it at the get-go,” he said. Gillian said the addition of electric would allow the village to “easily” decorate the medians seasonally, especially for the holiday season, and the addition of water will make it easier to irrigate the planters and landscaping that will be installed. The costs of the other change orders are $8,169 for the changeable message board; $1,632 for the temporary pavement markings; $17,750.00 for the additional storm sewers; and $14,553.00 for the additional electrical conduit pipe. Mayor Anthony Calderone said the additional change order costs would not affect

the project budget, noting the village is using tax increment financing (TIF) funds. He also said $180,000 is a small percentage of the $4.75 million project. Gillian said the project is still on target for completion in late fall with the “number one goal” of restoring parking in front of businesses. The project includes pavement resurfacing between Harlem and Desplaines Avenues, raised landscaped median islands, decorative crosswalks at Lathrop and Circle Avenues, site furniture, sidewalks with a brick paver ribbon, and replacement of all street lighting with decorative street lighting. The cost will be covered by $2.46 million from the TIF fund and a $2.29 million grant from IDOT.

Bargain retailer set to open from page 1 to the 97,000-square-foot space. “We’re very excited.” HOBO signed a 124-month lease for the former Kmart location in March 2017. Kmart, owned by Sears, closed in December 2014. HOBO sells furniture, kitchen and bath, home décor and flooring products. “You’ll never know what you’ll find but you’ll always find it for less,” Werner said in an Aug. 23 phone call, repeating one of the company’s slogans. HOBO does not have an incentive agreement with the village, so there are no public sales tax projections for the new business, Mayor Anthony Calderone said Aug. 24. “They are not obligated to tell us what their sales are going to be,” Calderone said. “Private business entities are in no way obligated to tell us what they think their sales are going to be.” Calderone did mention he would be talking with HOBO ownership in the next several weeks to try and get an estimate to help with village budget projections. He was part of several meetings with HOBO and Forest Park Plaza LLC, the site’s owner, in the lead up to HOBO signing a leasing agreement. “They want to get what I call a ‘comfort feel’ for how difficult is it to do business

with a local government, meaning how much red tape they have to go through,” Calderone said. Werner said HOBO prefers to repurpose old retail locations, calling it a “win-win.” Population density and demographics also made the Forest Park location attractive. The high concentration of old homes in Forest Park and neighboring communities like Oak Park, which may need restoration or repair work, added to the appeal, Werner said. With the old Kmart space in Forest Park Plaza set to be filled, there still remains a vacancy in the former Ultra Foods location. The grocery store shuttered in June. Rev. Bill Winston, the pastor at Living Word Christian Center, owns Forest Park Plaza LLC. Living Word is also a tenant in the 33-acre plaza. “We are excited to welcome HOBO to Forest Park Plaza and feel this is a great addition for the Plaza as well as our community,” Kim Gray, a spokesperson for Forest Park Plaza wrote in an Aug. 23 email to the Review. “There’s some movement on the Ultra [site],” Forest Park Village Administrator Tim Gillian said in an Aug. 18 phone call. “It’s nowhere near completed but there are people interested.” Calderone pegged the likelihood of a deal for a new tenant at the old Ultra site at over 50 percent. There are ongoing conversations with a potential occupant, who is a grocer, he said. The village should know in the next 60 days whether that deal will happen.

Masked, armed robber beats employee A man wearing a mask and armed with a handgun robbed Forest Park Liquors, 7429 Madison St. on Aug. 27 around 11 p.m. and repeatedly hit a 34-year-old employee in the head. The robber, according to the employee, took cash from two registers before locking him in the store’s cooler. He then fled out the back door. The man reportedly also asked the victim if he had “access to the store safe,” which he did not. Store security cameras recorded the incident and the man was last seen fleeing north on Burkhardt Court toward Warren Avenue. ALEXA ROGALS/Staff Photographer

Forest Park: Home of the monarch butterflies?

Villagers join national butterfly research project By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

At least a couple of Forest Parkers are participating in a nationwide research project on monarch butterflies. Teams from Chicago’s Field Museum, with funding from the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are mapping naturalized landscapes in urban areas, including Forest Park, to get a baseline for milkweed plants — the monarch caterpillars’ only source of food. The project, first started in spring 2016, includes work in Chicago, Minneapolis, Austin (Texas), and Kansas City, and is continuing this summer. “This is really useful for us to estimate how big of a role cities may play in the years to come with the right forms of public outreach,” Mark Johnston, an ecologist at the Field’s Keller Science Action Center wrote in an Aug 28. email to the Review. “Our goal is to better understand how much of a role cities can play in helping to rebound monarch butterfly populations.” Johnston added that monarchs east of the Rocky Mountains migrate to Mexico each year and have seen a significant population decrease — about 80 percent — in the last two decades. There can be benefits to repurposing a suburban greenspace, like a grassy lawn, into a site hosting milkweed and other natu-

ral species. “By planting a variety of native flowing plants that includes milkweed, you are providing habitat for monarchs,” Johnston wrote. “Pollinators promote gene flow between plant populations important for resiliency, especially in the face of climate change issues. Besides the esthetic value of monarchs, they are also a classic example for students of metamorphosis, predator-prey dynamics, and mimicry.” Forest Parkers Micki Leventhal and Con Buckley, who have lived on the south side of town since 2004, have done just that. Researchers from the Field Museum stopped by the pair’s house this weekend and catalogued 445 individual milkweed plants. “It just developed over the last decades,” Leventhal said of their double-lot backyard garden, which is devoted entirely to natural, pesticide-free plantings. “It’s kinda like a Disney cartoon in the backyard. It just gives us so much pleasure. We see a ton of bees and a ton of butterflies. It’s the right thing to do.” It is unclear how many Forest Parkers have milkweed plants, but Leventhal said she’s been impressed by some of the plantings she’s seen while biking around town. Another Forest Parker, Andrew Johnson, said he’s got about a dozen plants at his home near Jackson Boulevard and Wilcox Street. “We purchased our house last year in See MILKWEED on page 8

Criminal damage to property A maintenance employee at Proviso Math and Science Academy, 8601 Roosevelt Road, found one of the school’s “outer windows” smashed on Aug. 21 around 2 a.m. The incident, the employee said, happened between Aug. 18 around 7:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Aug. 21. There may be security camera footage, the report said.

Theft ■■Someone stole a license plate from Currie Motors, 8401 Roosevelt Road, sometime in the last two weeks. The dealership told Forest Park police on Aug. 21 the only reason they are aware of the missing plate is they got a red-light camera ticket from Berwyn with the plate attached to an unknown vehicle. ■■A 26-year-old woman on the 7200 block of Madison Street told police someone took a $90 package of clothing from the lobby of her building on Aug. 22 around 8:15 p.m. She saw the package earlier that day around noon but did not pick it up. When she returned later, it was missing.

Residential burglary ■■A man on the 1200 block of Elgin Avenue told police on Aug. 22 that someone broke into his home sometime between Aug. 21 around midnight and Aug. 22 around 2 a.m. The victim told officers he left his home through the back basement door around noon and locked it. The man’s brother came over around 2 a.m. and saw the back door wide open without signs of forced entry. A Go Pro camera, keyboard, speaker and studio mixing board, totaling around $1,100 were all missing. The man’s parents, according to the report, were asleep upstairs at the time of the burglary. ■■Two bikes, worth around $1,600, were

taken from a garage on the 100 block of Lathrop Avenue sometime between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Aug. 24. The homeowner, a 32-year-old woman, told police the garage was unlocked at the time.

Assault

Forest Park police arrested a 22-yearold Chicago man for assault after he repeatedly was “harassing and pestering” a 19-year-old woman riding a PACE bus, near 711 Desplaines Ave. on Aug. 23 around noon. The man reportedly followed the woman around the bus. Fearing for her safety, she told the man she would spray him with pepper spray if did not stop, at which point the man told her he would “smack” her. The woman then sprayed the man. The PACE driver was also inadvertently sprayed.

Retail Theft ■■A man wearing sunglasses took a $350 comforter from Bed, Bath and Beyond, 215 Harlem Ave., on Aug. 9 around 12:30 p.m. The incident was not reported until Aug. 25. The delay is not explained in the police report. ■■A Forest Park Emporium employee told police on Aug. 25 that a 40-something man stole a $285 Topaz ring from the store, 7345 Madison St. The employee knew the man as “Jeremy” from previous visits to the store. On Aug. 25 he reportedly came in, starting asking about the ring. The employee, with the jewelry case still open, moved on to help another customer. Soon after, she saw the man leave the store, and later realized the ring was missing.

Felony intent to deliver A Villa Park man was arrested on Aug. 27 around 5 p.m. on the 600 block of Harlem Avenue. Forest Park officers saw the man drive his 2002 Mercury Sable out of Thornton’s gas station, 600 Harlem Ave., without signaling. Officers smelled a “strong odor of fresh cannabis” from the Mercury. They eventually found 61 grams of cannabis and about $400 in cash. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Aug. 21-27, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Starship, at 40, has lived long and prospered Sub shop held celebration on Aug. 26 By JOHN RICE Contributing Reporter

Starship Restaurant & Catering marked 40 years at 7618 Madison St., with a gala celebration on Aug. 26. More than 50 people joined in the festivities, which included a buffet of appetizers, a cake decorated with the Starship Enterprise (from Star Trek) and, of course, sandwiches. Co-owner Paul McKenna delivered a brief speech, likening the restaurant’s founding to a “barn-raising.” Patrons then filed outside to release 40 biodegradable balloons. At the release point, McKenna led the crowd in the famous phrase, “May you live long and prosper.” The fact that Starship is still prospering after 40 years, making it Madison Street’s longest-running restaurant, defies all odds. Sixty percent of restaurants close their doors during their first year of operation. Eighty percent of them shut down by their fifth year. How did McKenna and his business partner, Henry Laskowski, keep the doors open for four decades? They certainly didn’t open during a period of prosperity. On Nov. 4, 1977, the country was mired in a recession and interest rates were sky high. Both partners were unfamiliar with the restaurant business and an eatery had just failed at that location. Before that, 7618 Madison had been home to a barber shop, but the popularity of long hair caused the barber to convert it to Custard’s Best Stand. After this closed down, the partners purchased the building for a bargain price. At that time, sub sandwiches were just becoming popular. Most of the chains used nautical themes. McKenna considered “20,000 Leagues under Forest Park” but the partners decided to go with spaceships instead of submarines. They came up with a catchy name, Starship Enterprises Inc. The name was too catchy for Paramount Pictures, which released Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. The studio was trademarking all Trek-related terms and Starship Enterprises appeared to be an infringement. Fortunately, a loyal patron was also a lawyer and his firm represented the restaurant for free. They negotiated a compromise with Paramount to drop Enterprise and call it Starship Inc. “We got lots of free publicity. We were on radio talk shows,” McKenna recalled. “It was the most fun lawsuit in history, a David and Goliath story.” While David was fighting the legal battle, the partners were concentrating on the food. Though they specialized in sandwiches, “We added soups as a survival mechanism,” McKenna recalled. Soup was a good coldweather alternative, with the restaurant selling 30 gallons a day in the winter. Rosanne Ryan, of River Forest, enjoys a piece of cake after manager Veronica Minor serves it. they offer 150 different kinds of soup. “We serve 5-6 soups daily,” McKenna said, noting that their soup hotline (708-366-SOUP) is “kind of fun.” They take entrees and turn them into soups. “I personally love Cajun food,” McKenna confessed, “so we make jambalaya.” They also offer German and Mexican varieties and specialties like Resurrection Chicken, which allegedly can knock out the worst cold. “Resurrection Soup should have an Rx on the label,” McKenna quipped. “There’s a zaniness to our soups.” There’s also a zaniness to their sandwiches, considering that “Crazy Club” is their top seller. They offer a wide variety of subs and feature a “cheap but good” sandwich daily. To have enough space to prepare these sandwiches, Starship has gradually expanded over the years. “We received a grant and a low-interest loan from the West Suburban Preservation Agency for a major re-model in 1980,” McKenna said. “It was a good government program. We couldn’t have afforded it on our own.” They first built a kitchen inside the garage and then expanded west, when they bought the building next door. These rooms contain walk-in freezers and refrigerators and plenty of room for food prep. “We have 15 employees,” McKenna said, “20 including drivers. Our guys don’t seem to quit. We show respect for our employees.

Starship has a family feel, though we’re not related.” The partners may not be related but they are locked in a “marriage” of sorts. “Marriages don’t even last 40 years,” Laskowski observed. “It’s amazing we still like each other.” It was “like at first sight,” when they met in high school, working as stock boys at a grocery store called Elliot’s Dairy. “We worked together beautifully,” Laskowski recalled. “We were in synch with each other. We became best friends.” Though they knew nothing about the restaurant business, they came up with the perfect division of labor. “We complement each other,” Laskowski continued. “Paul is hands-on with the cooking and I do the buying and take care of the finances. We trust each other 100 percent.” They also learned to “honor their personal time” so they don’t burn out. Though their

prep cooks can come in as early as 2 a.m. to prepare a special order, the partners typically start at 8 a.m. and put in about 40 hours a week. Away from the restaurant, they do not share the same interests. Music is McKenna’s outlet, while golf is Laskowski’s passion. “I play guitar and sing,” McKenna said. “I’ve played up and down Madison Street.” As for the restaurant, “It’s not about the money,” McKenna said. “It’s about the food.” This includes the food on their catering menu. “We sell catering items we don’t carry in the store,” McKenna explained. “About 50 percent of our business is catering. We cater to faraway places, Joliet, Hammond, even Peoria.” “We also do a lot of work with local See STARSHIP on page 10

Forty years on Madison Street from page 9 churches and schools,” Laskowski said. “We provide all the sandwiches for the Day Camp at The Park.” Starship is indeed part of the fabric of the village. “Forest Park is very special,” McKenna said. “It’s become a destination suburb. When Madison Street was revitalized, we benefitted from it. This town has held its own. As [District 209 school board member] Claudia Medina said, we have to make a stand for our community.” McKenna’s community involvement includes teaching a hospitality class at Triton College, where he imparts his wisdom to would-be restaurateurs. His number-one priority is that they be, “Consistent with their hours.” Owners who close early, or don’t maintain a reliable schedule, will lose customers. Starship has kept their customer base by preserving quality and adding a fun twist with their Star Trek theme. The restrooms are labeled Transporter Rooms. The place is decorated with kitschy Star Trek memorabilia, and they host unique events. During the Cubs championship run, they cooked a 40-pound goat and invited customers to, “Eat the Curse.” It’s no wonder they’ve built such a loyal base during their 40year run. “We get stories every day,” McKenna said. “I just got off the plane and the first place I had to go was Starship.”

Ferrara’s back-to-school backpacks We represent Ferrara Candy Company, which recently collected school supplies for the Bellwood School District Ferrara, headquartered in Oakbrook Terrace and best known for brands including Lemonhead, Red Hots, Brach’s and Trolli, collected more than $1,850 in donations, gift cards, and school supplies for Bellwood School District #88. As a result, 57 backpacks were packed with supplies and a dozen $25 gift cards were donated to the teachers in the local school district to use for classroom supplies. Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey was in attendance when Ferrara delivered the backpacks to the school district. As one of Ferrara’s Engagement Council initiatives designed to involve employees across the company’s five Chicagoland facilities in activities that directly benefit the local

communities in which they live and work, the School Supplies Drive solicited donations in collection bins in lunch areas and HR departments at each of Ferrara’s facilities in Oakbrook Terrace, Bellwood, Forest Park, Maywood and Bolingbrook, making it convenient and easy for employees to drop off items. Ferrara employees were given a list of requested school supplies from the school district. If employees were unable to shop for school supplies, they were encouraged to donate cash or a gift card to local stores. Due to the success of the drive, the company was able to fill more backpacks than originally anticipated, and also had money left over to donate gift cards for teachers to use for their classrooms.

Chicago

Three values found in playing board games Our church group at Forest Park Baptist Church held game nights in which we would play a variety of board games. During one game night, we began to wonder what board games were played in biblical times. During our visit to the Oriental Institute of Chicago I saw an actual game board that did, in fact, back date to 13th century B.C. The ancient game board was found in Megiddo, IsraIsra el. It was made of ivory and every fifth hole on the board was inlaid with gold. It was used to play a race game called the “Game of 58 Holes.” When I looked at this game board, it reflected three aspects of why religious institutions are important in a community like Forest Park. These aspects could be described in terms of three values. First is the realization that there are rules. There is a right and wrong that buttresses the order and the cohesion of a society. The upholding of moral principles is

called integrity and without upholding certain moral principles, society would fall apart. It is religious institutions that study the foundations of ethics and moral behavior. In comparison, playing the “Game of 58 Holes” was only viable to the extent that a moral framework was observed and by adhering to those rules, the expe experience of the game play had meaning and struc structure. The second value was the durability which comes with integrity. The earthly ministry of Jesus began over 2,000 years ago and yet its resonance is still strong and growing even today. This ancient integrity shows an inner strength and power overturning the modern conceit that only new things are worthwhile. What is old may not necessarily be out of date and may even be stronger than the new. I thought of this as I looked at the 3,300-year-old game

board before me. Another value is community itself. The moral integrity and faith practiced by religious institutions leads to social integration which combines and unifies. The cohesion brings solidity to a society that enables it to become stronger and more resilient when challenges arise. This coming together can also bequeath a trust and a sense of well-being. I thought of this as I looked at the game board to a game that required the coming together of at least two people. Moral framework, inner durability and social cohesion are what religious institutions can bring to a community. These same qualities can sometimes also be seen in a 3300 year old game board. OPINION O U R

V I E W

Hello HOBO

W

e all spend a lot of time staring at the near100,000-square-foot retail space at the western edge of the Forest Park Plaza mall. We stare at it when it’s up and running. We stare even more when it goes through its

shuttered eras. It was Venture. It was nothing. It was Kmart. And then for nearly three years already, it has been nothing again. But now, starting this week, it will be HOBO, Home Owners Bargain Outlet. Honestly, we’ve never set foot in a HOBO, weren’t exactly sure what it is we’d expect to find inside its half dozen locations spread across Chicago’s exurbs. Well, it is, we’ve found out, furniture, kitchen and bath, home décor and flooring. It is one of those retailers expert at corralling bargains from manufacturers. So you know you’ll find kitchen cabinets but not necessarily the manufacturer you had expected. We’re glad to see the store filled. We’re happy to report that there are no sales tax givebacks or other municipal concessions demanded by this family-owned business. And we’ll be glad when the sales tax revenue again flows to village government. Forest Park needs that revenue and, in a moment when retail is tough to find, HOBO is a worthy addition to Forest Park. More good news in a week where Amazon took over Whole Foods: Both Mayor Anthony Calderone and Administrator Tim Gillian report that there is sincere interest in the now vacant Ultra Foods space further east in the mall. And that interest is from a grocer. Both acknowledge that a deal is far from certain. But that interest is encouraging.

Carousel goes around

Better than a century ago, Forest Park was known for its cemeteries and its amusement park. Both made this village a destination for people across Chicagoland. One of the primary attractions at the amusement park was its fabulous carousel — it’s got 32 jumpers, 16 standers and two chariots. That carousel has had a long and twisted ride since the amusement park opened in 1908 and closed after a fire in 1922. As we report today, it was shipped back to its manufacturer in Philadelphia for repair. It turned up a year later at the city fairgrounds in Memphis, made its way to an amusement park in Memphis for 30 years and has been in storage since 2005. Three years back, the children’s museum in Memphis leased it and shipped it to Marion, Ohio for restoration. It will make its debut at the museum in November. Forest Parker Ken Knack has been following the progress. In a recent Facebook post, he floated the idea of locals “adopting” one of the carousel horses, paying for its restoration at $4,500. That would put a Forest Park marker back on “our” horse which would be wonderfully appropriate. There are 15 horses still available, according to museum officials. We need someone to create the GoFundMe page. The mayor is ready to contribute. Other businesses have piped up. And count the Review among them.

What is Diversity in Forest Park?— Defining the Diversity Commission’s Role

T

he Forest Park Diversity Commission (DC) recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. We have helped spearhead the passage of the Welcoming Village Resolution, have contributed Forest Park Review articles on diversity in Forest Park, and have participated in several Forest Park events. As the wider United States struggles with being open and tolerant of people from different backgrounds, what is the DC’s role in creating a diverse and inclusive community here in Forest Park? At our most recent meeting, a guest commented: “This is a really white diversity committee.” Some members agreed with her sentiment. The membership doesn’t reflect the racial demographics of the village. Others, however, pointed out the diversity we do have. There are members who are gay, members who are disabled, members who are Asian, African American, and White, and all of the members have varying political beliefs. Both sides were saying something important about the meaning of diversity and the role of the Diversity Commission. Diversity relies on the concept of various boxes we put people in—the male box (or not), the straight box (or not), the white box (or not). We have multiple boxes and people who do or don’t fit into each of them. Diversity exists between “we’re all different” and “we’re all just people”; while both are true, both ignore very real issues about what it’s like to be inside or outside of those boxes. Those boxes, and the binaries of being in them or not, evolved for a reason: they are a form of shorthand that makes it easier for us to make sense of our complex world. However, being put into these boxes, and putting ourselves in them, robs us of the complexity that makes us human and obscures the many ways we are similar as well as different. In thinking about these “either/or” categories, the Diversity Commission sees its role to encourage people to be more aware of and have respect for all the points inside and outside these boxes that make us human, to

stretch how we think about those boxes, and question how they help and how they hinder us. But doing so requires people to get out of their comfort zone. As the DC, we can create “educational” programs to facilitate this process and urge community members to change their minds and become more aware of customs, habits, and ways of being that are unfamiliar. As we learn about them, we may need to redefine who fits where, who is accepted, and to ask ourselves what role we have played in making others feel included or excluded. Learning different ways to use categories so that people feel more included takes effort and can be tough. Who wants to go to an educational program that can be seen as a “downer” or is not relevant to a particular box. And, for such education to work, we need people to attend. Perhaps, we should create “fun” programs that “celebrate” diversity. Yet, a desire to “celebrate” diversity can often mean reinforcing those “ether/or” categories we’re trying to get rid of. These categories become distilled into essential traits inside or outside those boxes. And these traits often don’t challenge our understanding, which keeps us from being able to address issues that arise between “we’re all different” and “we’re all just people.” We must make the challenge of addressing those issues worthwhile. To determine our role, we must acknowledge that our DC is diverse in many ways, but we must recognize where it is not enough. We cannot claim the right to define “diversity” only as we see fit, nor can we leave the definition to others. We must struggle over what it means to be political, to be educational, and struggle over how such an effort can be rewarding, and even fun. What should a Diversity Commission do? It should serve as a space where struggling over these ideas is appropriate, and welcomed, and the work appropriate to every member of Forest Park. We look forward to continuing to define our role and reporting to you monthly on our progress in this column. We’d love to hear your thoughts at our monthly meetings (the second Thursday of the month) and at: diversity@forestpark.net.
