Forest Park is taking a stance on prescription opioids by joining a growing number of municipalities in Illinois in

lawsuits against manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioids.

The village council voted 4-0 Sept. 24 to retain the services of Edelson PC and join a class-action lawsuit seeking to recoup damages from the defendant companies and doctors

for their roles in creating a nationwide opioid epidemic and the costs associated with combating it. Commissioner Dan Novak was absent.

Pater sworn in as sergeant

Dan Pater was sworn in as sergeant of the Forest Park Police Department at the Sept.

24 village council meeting.

Mayor Anthony Calderone administered the oath of office to Pater, 33, in front of more than 50 family members, friends and fellow officers, including former Police Chief Jim Ryan.

With his promotion, Pater, who has been with the department for 12 years, will be assigned to a patrol shift as a watch com-

mander.

“We must have the entire department here,” Calderone said. “Is anybody watching the streets?”

Pater joined the department after serving for six years in the U.S. Army. He has spent the past 7½ years as a tactical officer in the criminal investigations unit. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Lewis University in Lockport and is working toward a master’s degree, also at Lewis.

“I won’t let you down,” he told Calderone after taking the oath.

He replaces Sgt. Eric Bell, who had been

unable to work since suffering a “significant” shoulder injury while on duty in October 2016, and filed for duty disability last year.

Police chiefs talk importance of preschool Aftanas joins Maywood chief, state rep to advocate for increased ed funding

Two area police chiefs and a state legislator recently visited a prekindergarten class in Maywood to read to students and show their support for additional preschool funding.

Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley and Forest Park Police Chief Thomas Aftanas joined with state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th) on Sept. 17 in reading to a classroom of preschoolers at Washington Dual Language Academy, 1111 Washington Blvd. in Maywood.

According to a statement released by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Illinois, an anti-crime nonprofit whose membership includes Talley and Aftanas, among other law enforcement officials across the state, the chiefs strongly support increasing the Illinois State Board of Education’s Early Childhood Block Grant for the 2020 fiscal year by $50 million.

Welch is a strong supporter of the funding boost, which Fight Crime noted would “allow for essential quality improvements and expansion of full-day slots available for children in need.”

tracked at-risk children who attended Perry Preschool in Michigan and “similar children who did not.”

According to the study, by “the age of 27, non-participants were five times more likely

to have been arrested for drug felonies and twice as likely as former preschool students to have been arrested for violent crimes.

By age 40, non-participants were 85 percent more likely than their preschool peers to have been sentenced to prison or jail.”

Another study, similar to the Michigan one, found that kids left out of publicly funded Child-Parent Centers in Chicago “were 27 percent more likely to have been arrested by age 28 than those who had participated.”

As a result of a $50 million boost in the Early Childhood Block Grant for the 2019 fiscal year, Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview Elementary Schools District 89 received $1.2 million, which allowed the district to increase the number of 3- and 4-year-old students in the preschool program from 160 to 148.

“The children in this building are the future of our communities,” said Talley. “The skills they are learning in these classrooms are what they will need to grow up to be lawabiding adults.”

Aftanas said the “best way to keep our streets safe is to ensure that today’s children do not grow up to become tomorrow’s crime statistics.”

During a regular meeting on Sept. 18, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education unanimously approved a budget for the 2019 fiscal year, which contained a significant surplus. The fiscal year stretches from July 1 to June 30.

The district budgeted $88.5 million for operating revenues, but projected expenditures came in at around $83.4 million, with a resulting surplus of around $5 million. District officials, however, said that this surplus could dwindle by at least $3.1 million if a significant number of teacher vacancies are filled.

Some of the major aspects of the new budget include $288,000 for Extended Learning Opportunities for Students, a period that runs from 8 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and that requires additional bus runs to transport students to the high school before the start of first period.

Another major aspect of the new budget

is a $2.1 million one-to-one technology initiative, which entails providing all students in the district with laptops at no cost to families.

The new budget includes an increase from 281 to 289 full time teachers, interventionists, instructional coaches and paraprofessionals. The district also repurposed two special payroll positions and created new data analyst, grant specialist and building-level social studies department chair positions. The district eliminated the district-wide social studies chairperson position some time ago.

Seventy-five percent of the new budget, or $64 million, comes from local revenues; 20 percent, or $19.2 million, come from state revenues; and $5.2 million, or 6 percent, come from federal revenues.

During the meeting, D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said that, due to the state’s new evidence-based school funding formula — which is designed to send more funding and support to under-resourced school districts — D209 got around $400,000 more from the state than in previous years.

Rodriguez said that the district is “putting

more resources into the classroom” and has “been more effective and efficient year after year in making sure we use our dollars more effectively.” He said that the budget doesn’t including any cuts to programming or instruction.

New BBQ restaurant opens on Madison Small Batch Barbecue plans to be serving by November

Two years ago Greg Stinton finished first in the village’s annual Ribfest, giving him the confidence he needed to start smoking ribs full-time. In just two months, the Forest Park resident will go from selling software to launching Small Batch Barbecue, a counter restaurant set to open at 7441 Madison St. by November.

“I’ve lived in Forest Park with my wife for the past five years, we absolutely love the community, and this is the right time to continue a dream I’ve had for a while,” Stinton said. “I’ve had the concept of the barbecue idea for a while, and the experience that we’ve had, and the warm welcome that we’ve had at Ribfest from the community made things real.”

Growing up, Stinton said he was an extremely picky eater, but when a family friend offered to teach him a secret dry rub recipe, the 13-year-old couldn’t resist. Stinton tried the Memphis recipe and was wowed.

He started tinkering with the dry rub recipe, and eventually graduated to sauce.

Stinton decided to make a Chicago barbecue sauce, which he said incorporates the flavor profiles of giardiniera, sport peppers, and other sweet and tangy tastes near and dear to Chicago and nowhere else. He said he has spent the last decade preparing the secret sauce, which will debut at Small Batch Barbecue.

“We’re just extremely excited to do some-

thing and especially focus on the community and the neighboring areas, because the community has been so great to us,” Stinton said.

He said build-out for Small Batch Barbecue should start within the next few weeks — using all-local labor is important to him, he added — and he plans to install an onsite smoker as the primary cooking vessel.

Most items will be priced by the pound — although hot links don’t lend themselves to that kind of pricing, Stinton noted — and food will be carved in front of the customer.

The five sides include macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, baked beans, hush puppies, and fried okra, which is Stinton’s personal favorite.

He plans to complete the build-out by late October or early November.

“We’re going to do a more visual experience; everything’s going to be ready,” he said. “Barbecue obviously takes quite a long time. The goal is when someone walks in, they walk up essentially to a carving station. … The style is a little reminiscent of how some view it in Texas, as far as serving.

Really very few in the Chicagoland area are doing anything close to that.”

He plans to be open for lunch and dinner during the weekends and might do dinner only during the week. Down the road, he said he’d like to serve late-night options for those carousing Madison Street.

“Nobody seems to want to take that corner of the market and I’m that guy,” he said.

Crowd gathers for first pro-video gaming forum O’Sullivan’s owner said bar owners will hold another based on demand

18 at McGaffer’s Saloon for pizza, beer and short speeches on why residents should support video gaming in Forest Park. The event, titled, “Why Should You Vote No,” was held by the Let Forest Park Grow - Vote No ballot initiative committee, which had $35,200 in its bank account as of Aug. 22, according to a filing with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

The some eight bar owners in attendance — including representation from Doc Ryan’s, Duffy’s Tavern, R Place and others — offered attendees the opportunity to sign up to mail postcards to neighbors, knock on doors or receive a free pro-gaming yard sign to plant on their lawn.

“What we’d like to do tonight is get past some of the negativity and arguing that’s taken place and have a fact-finding mission, and see the real effect that gambling has had on our village,” said James Watts, owner of O’Sullivan’s Public House and the bar owner who brought the local battle over video

gaming to the state Supreme Court. Watts is also the chairman of Let Forest Park Grow.

On Nov. 6, residents will vote on “Shall video gaming be prohibited in the village of Forest Park?” which means you vote Yes if you’re against and No if you’re for video gambling. It is a binding referendum, which means that if a majority of Forest Parkers were to vote in favor of prohibiting video gaming, which is currently allowed, it will be outlawed in the village.

Since the Forest Park Village Council legalized local gaming in October 2016, Watts told attendees, there has been no increase in crime, no impact to home values and no signs advertising the games on Madison Street. He said revenue from the games helps plug the $1.9 million budget shortfall the village faces this fiscal year. The village has budgeted $19,673,215 in revenue for fiscal year 2019; expenses are $21,575,469.

Watts also said video gaming helps bar owners compete with businesses in nearby North Riverside, Berwyn and Brookfield, all areas which currently have gaming.

“If you vote Yes, you need to explain to me how the village is going to come up $170,000 to fill that hole,” he said.

In fiscal year 2018, which ran from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018, the village earned $165,141 total from video gaming, according to data provided by the village of Forest Park, which includes all license fees, permits, and the village’s share of the terminal income.

“That pays for a fireman, that pays for a policeman, it pays for the snow shoveling that we get free on all the sidewalks,” he said.

In response to an audience member who asked why he thought people didn’t like video gaming, Watts said he wasn’t sure, but believed that local residents against the practice were part of “a group of people in the country here that are opposed to gaming, they’re opposed to gambling, they don’t like gambling. It’s totally a choice of a person who wants to gamble or not gamble.”

That ended the public question-andanswer portion of the evening, with Watts saying bar owners would then answer individual questions one-on-one.

In a separate interview with the Forest Park Review, a group of bar owners talked about video gaming’s impact on village finances, businesses, and town aesthetics.

“We’re committed not to do it anyway” Terry Healy, owner of Healy’s Westside, said of adding signs advertising video gaming to local bars.

Scott Burns, owner of the Beacon Pub, said money earned from video gaming has allowed bar owners to reinvest in their business and community, such as donating to Ribfest or supporting renovation of the Howard Mohr Community Center’s kitchen.

“It’s not a vote [against] voter suppression because there is a vote in November, Burns said, referring to several attempts to keep the referendum off the ballot. “It’s a vote that’s based on two years of history, where people can make up their own minds on the ill effects,” Burns said. “Did all our fears come to fruition or not? I think a lot of people [who] voted [in a non-binding referendum that opposed video gaming several years ago] were apprehensive because they didn’t know what was going to happen. Well, nothing has happened.”

Christopher Fleming, owner of Slainte Irish Pub, called the idea of voter suppression “ridiculous.”

“A vote is a vote,” he said.

Chamber unveils new ‘Shop Small’ ad campaign

Noel Eberline and Jef Anderson, co-owners of Yearbook Studios, designed the Shop Small Campaign, recently unveiled by the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce.

“Unless you’ve owned your own small business,” Eberline said, “there’s no way anyone can fathom how challenging it can truly be.

Most small businesses owners have to wear almost every hat for the business, including buyer, merchandiser, shopkeeper, accountant, marketing manager, social media poster, business development, sweeper and toilet cleaner, to name a few.”

Because each independent small business in Forest Park cannot come close to the advertising budgets of the big chain stores, the shops and eateries in town depend on the Chamber of Commerce to supplement their own advertising by promoting the town as a whole with events like the Wine Walk and advertising campaigns like Shop Small.

“The message ‘Come In, We’re Small,” Eberline said, “was derived from the traditional, retro ‘Come In, We’re Open’ door signs. It promotes a friendly, nostalgic and welcoming message. The graphics feature the outline of some of the distinctive buildings on Madison Street to highlight the small-town charm and unique architecture.”

Laurie Kokenes, director of the Forest Park Chamber, got the idea for the campaign from a workshop she recently attended. She is well aware of how convenient it is to shop online and how big box stores can offer low prices, but she is quick to add that “shopping small”

is a quality experience the big box stores can’t match.

“Imagine Forest Park,” she said, “without any of its small businesses — coffee shops, boutiques, restaurants. your personal trainer. Your dog groomer and dance instructor wouldn’t be just around the corner. Impromptu chats with neighbors you run into when you’re out and about, along with the friendly relationships you’ve established with local shop owners, would be a thing of the past.

Community organizations would lose the support of small business owners who donate goods or volunteer their time.

“Small business owners tend to buy local, putting more of their profits back into the community. Small business owners care about their customers and the products they’re selling them. Small businesses encourage entrepreneurship.”

The Chamber and its members are also increasingly using social media to get their message out. They are creating 10 social media graphics they call “The Faces of Small Business,” which will include photos of small business owners and text that tells their stories.

“The Small Business Administration census,” Kokenes noted, “states that there are 26.8 million small businesses in the nation … and those small businesses employ nearly half of U.S. employees.”

She urged shoppers to “be a game changer.

REST IN PEACE: As the Van Dyke trial continues, teen Laquan McDonald has been laid to rest in Forest Park.

Laquan McDonald buried in Forest Home The fallen teen who changed the Chicago Police Department and city politics scene has been quietly buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The gravestone reads: “Beloved Son & Brother Laquan J. Mcdonald Sept. 25, 1997 Oct. 20, 2014 Forever In Our Hearts” On the night of Oct. 20, 2014, Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times. Defense lawyers are now alleging that the 17-year-old carrying a knife posed a threat to police. Van Dyke faces first-degree murder charges. If found guilty, he would be the first Chicago police officer charged with first-degree murder since 1970, according to the Tribune.

McDonald’s legal team says the teen posed

no threat and that Van Dyke unjustifiably shot McDonald. His death has changed the oversight system of the Chicago Police Department.

Former Chicago Police Department superintendent Garry McCarthy was fired for his handling of the case; McCarthy is now running for mayor of Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he would not seek reelection the day jury selection began for the trial. Anita Alvarez, Cook County’s top prosecutor, who waited 13 months to charge Van Dyke, was voted out of office.

McDonald is buried in plot 32. He joins several notable names who rest in Forest Home: author Ernest Hemingway’s parents, famous radicals Emma Goldman and Lucy Parsons, and victims from the 1915 Eastland ship disaster among others.

Membership at Eagles Club surges

After some 30 years of stagnated membership, the list of local Eagles Club members is growing

After the primary organizer of Garage Galleries moved from Forest Park to Los Angeles, community member Gerald Lordan worried over the future of the event, which celebrated its fifth year transforming garages into art galleries this August.

Lordan thought the Aerie in Forest Park, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club’s headquarters, might be a good place to hold Garage Galleries. He had been intrigued by the Eagles building at 446 Hannah Ave. for years and thought it had always been underutilized. Once he got to the club and started talking to the members, he decided to join.

After paying the $25 application fee and being interviewed by Eagles Club members, Lordan was in, the first member to join the club in a long time. Celebrating its 112th year in service this year, the Eagles Club is an international nonprofit focused on giving back to Forest Park causes, like the food pantry at the Howard Mohr Community Center, police fundraisers, Salvation Army and more.

It is in its second year of resurgence.

“I’ve explained to the Eagles Club that we need to get out of the Aerie and get out into the community. We can’t expect Mohammed to come to the mountain, the mountain is going to go to Mohammed,” said Lordan, a history teacher at Fenwick High School in Oak Park and former head of St. Bernardine’s school in Forest Park.

Club members advertise their presence to the community by attending community events and buying advertising in various community organizations’ programs.

Lordan also wants the community to know that the club is a “low-cost opportunity for people” who want to use the Eagles Club hall to hold a party or event.

“We do graduation parties, family reunions and birthday parties,” he said.

They even have room for German singing groups. The Harlem Maenner-und Damenchor, a German American social singing group, uses the Aerie to practice every Tuesday evening.

The choir pays for the club’s rent, which is their principal source of income, Lordan said.

Currently there are 25 members in the club, however, about five members typically attend the weekly meeting, Lordan said.

Forest Park resident Chris Harris is a recent member.

“All the guys that are members there, before this little wave of new people came in, had been members there since the 1980s,” Harris said.

He added: “We’re so happy we doubled in size within like six months after we got the ball rolling.”

Gasse arrived at school about 7 a.m. daily, before the sun rose, and joined classes of approximately 36 students studying core subjects like, biology, physics, and Castilian, the Spanish-language class that Gasse said was his favorite. At FPMS, Gasse is an advanced student. But in Cordoba, he quickly learned why students who earn a 40 percent still can pass.

“I joke very proudly [that] Ernesto got his first F in school,” father Daniel Gasse said with a laugh. “It was his second or third day there, he had to take a Spanish test, and, of course, he failed, ‘F’. The good thing was, five weeks later he took an exam and he got a ‘C’.”

Gasse said teacher expectations are much higher for students — he believes the highest grade any student earned during his time there was an 80 percent. In Cordoba, he said educators teach to the top of

The club’s most recent donation was to the Wounded Warrior Project. They are also generous in giving to the Fisher House, which provides lodging for families of injured veterans and is located inside the VA hospital in Maywood, Lordan said.

Lordan hopes to attract younger members to the Eagles Club to help sustain the club moving forward. One way to do this, he said, is to get the word out that they are available for rent for theater groups.

“We would hope very much that we could be somewhat of a performing arts center.

We have a stage. One doesn’t get used all that often,” Lordan said with a laugh.

Man stabbed near Miller Meadows Police responded to Currie Motors, 8401 Roosevelt Road, about 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, on a report that a man had been stabbed. Officers found the victim standing nearby at the entrance of Miller Meadows, covered in blood with a large open wound on his arm. He was transported to Loyola Hospital.

Police saw a woman who matched the victim’s description of his attacker — wearing a white shirt and dark pants — walking north through the parking lot at Proviso Math and Science Academy.

Officers approached the woman, telling her to stop, which she ignored. The officer saw fresh blood smears on her arms and stains on her shirt. The woman continued to ignore police commands to stop, dropping a backpack in the parking lot, and repeating that “he was choosing the wrong side” or “picking the wrong side.” Police tased her twice and handcuffed her. The woman told police she had a knife in her bra.

Tenorio told police she suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and self-medicates with marijuana. She said she has a medical cannabis card but that it’s too costly to purchase marijuana at a legal dispensary. She said she purchases large amounts from her dealer because it’s cheaper.

After reviewing texts from her personal phone, police found numerous messages and photos that implied she was involved in narcotic sales. Police asked if she was a big-time dealer or just trying to make extra money for her and her girlfriend. Tenorio replied “Yeah, that’s it,” and then quickly added that she doesn’t sell cannabis.

She was charged with delivery/manufacture of cannabis over 30gm.

Tinted windows turn up cannabis, cash

Chase leads officers all over interstate

Police spotted a Honda Accord with overly tinted windows about 6:28 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Circle Avenue. Officers conducted a registration check on the car and learned that the owner, Christina Tenorio, 29, of Berwyn, had a felony warrant out for her arrest.

Officers curbed Tenorio on the 500 block of Jackson and smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle and a sandwich bag containing suspected cannabis in the cup holder of the center console.

Officers spotted a Lincoln Continental with overly-tinted windows about 6:10 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Circle Avenue.

Police made a U-turn to catch up to the Lincoln, which turned onto Desplaines Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver quickly switched from the right lane into the left lane and stopped at a red light at 711 Desplaines Ave. When police pulled behind the car with their lights flashing, the Lincoln blasted through the red light and continued onto I-290, nearly striking cars stopped on the on-ramp to the highway.

By specifying Riverside Pain Management, which operated in Riverside from 2013 to 2017 and whose doctors have had their medical licenses stripped from them by the state, Edelson’s lawyers said they believe the cases will remain in state court.

On Aug. 2 the defendants in the Cook County cases removed the lawsuits to federal court, but Scharg said that because of the local nature of the suit, naming individual doctors and municipal code violations, he fully expects the cases to be remanded back to Cook County.

“It’s a delay tactic, which is what we expect,” Scharg said. “We’re going to file a motion to remand as soon as possible.”

The physicians identified in the lawsuit are Dr. Joseph Giacchino, Dr. Paul Madison and Dr. William McMahon.

In the 22 months prior to having his medical license stripped by the state, Madison allegedly prescribed about 1.6 million doses of controlled substances out of his office in Riverside.

The lawsuits are the latest event in the national opioid epidemic that has seen more than 165,000 Americans die from overdoses related to opioid use through 2014, according to Edelson representatives. They said in a previous filing that the wide use of prescription opioids is one of the reasons “local governments are struggling with a pernicious, ever-expanding epidemic.”

McGaffer’s was a start

G

ood for Forest Park bar owners for hosting what should be the first in a series of pre-election events making their case for supporting the continuation of video gaming in the binding referendum on the November ballot.

The event last week at McGaffer’s turned out a good-sized crowd, though probably inevitably tilted toward gaming supporters. A greater effort could have been made to foster engagement with the smaller portion of gaming opponents who turned out in apparent good will.

That distance likely will be hard to bridge given the hardened feelings on all sides of this divisive issue. Doesn’t help, in our opinion, that the initial advertising from gaming supporters had a Chicken Little theme. Denigrating the motives of the opponents reminds us more of the dubious tactics that gaming backers have employed to prevent a vote than a persuasive effort to win new supporters.

We’re six weeks out from the vote. Both sides need to make their case in the clearest way possible. This needs to be about more than upset feelings over previous tactics. It needs to have context beyond the ability to plant lawn signs, though we admit we’ve started to count. There are real issues that need clarity. Can a ban on signage be made real and permanent? What are the true numbers on revenue to the village, the trend lines, the growth experience in other communities.

And, as we’ve said before, where is the broader economic development plan of which video gaming is but one part?

One straw at a time

So far at least two Madison Street food establishments have banished plastic straws, suddenly recognized as a notable contributor to ecological calamity. In our reporting last week, we reported that some 500 million plastic straws and drink stirrers are used each day in America. While some have questioned that number, no one is denying that actual number is gargantuan and, with just one-time uses, an extraordinary waste.

Counter Coffee, our outstanding indie coffee shop at Madison and Circle, has replaced plastic with paper straws.

Across the street at Healy’s Westside, straws are now on a request-only basis. Proprietors at both establishments report a very positive response from customers.

Here’s a trend we’d love to see sweep Madison Street. Giving us all something to cheer about and rally around would be great.

Parade to Proviso

It was a feel good event, that’s for sure. On a lovely early fall Saturday, the annual Proviso East Homecoming Parade launched from Madison and Circle and paraded out to Maywood’s Ninth Avenue before circling back to East.

This was a first, at least in living memory, and it reflects the continuing success of Proviso leaders in knitting this fractured high school district back together. “One Proviso” is the model and the motto, and it is an apt description of what was on display Saturday morning.

Good job by Forest Park police and village officials in welcoming the parade to our village.

Is family the key to closing the achievement gap?

T

he recent release of the Steve James documentary, America to Me, a film about race and the achievement gap at Oak Park and River Forest High School, has provoked a great deal of community handwringing these last four weeks.

Oak Park prides itself, deservedly so, on being a model of racial integration. The cause of the angst is the revelation that although the OPRF student body is 56% white and 44% students of color, the gap between the scores on achievement tests between the first and second cohorts is not only disturbingly wide but getting wider. Equal access, apparently, has not resulted in equal outcomes. To be fair, our own school district, District 91, faces the same issues.

Reactions to the disturbing data have included a gamut of opinions as to the cause and an accompanying abundance of blaming. Conversations in coffee shops and letters to the editor in Wednesday Journal assign blame for the gap to a variety of factors like racism, white privilege, teacher insensitivity, inadequate training of staff, poverty, the administration, ignorance of history, and poor feeder schools.

My awareness of the disagreements east of Harlem, both the diagnosis and the remedy, set me up to be both startled and intrigued by an impassioned speech given

by D209 board member Rodney Alexander at a PTMAN (Proviso Township Ministers Alliance Network) meeting a few weeks ago at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood. What he said is not the answer but his voice is worth hearing.

Alexander, who was born in 1968 and is himself African American, declared, “There has been a dramatic dropping of the ball in my generation in the black community. Along with crack cocaine in the 1980s we had an epidemic of babies having babies. My generation got sisters pregnant at an astronomical rate.”

The result, he said, has been black children growing up in single-parent families without their fathers present and added, “Children with problems are a direct result of the lack of nurture that has been given to them by their parents. If you plant appleseeds, you’re going to get apple trees.”

I got together with Alexander a week later to try to understand if he was blaming single moms for their children not doing well in school. What I learned is that’s not what he was saying. His was the first generation of African Americans who grew up with the rights granted in 1964 by the Civil Rights Act and fair housing legislation.

And instead of taking advantage of that new playing field, he argued that many of his contemporaries in the black community failed to be accountable as parents and take responsibility for raising their children because many of them were “blinded by the get, get, get mentality. We were taught to believe that by acquiring things we would be equal.”

He has trouble with folks he calls “excuse makers” who blame racism and police brutality for the failings of

black youth. Referring to the history of what black people have gone through for 400 years — the first slave ship arrived in Virginia in 1619 — he argued that what people of color encounter is not remotely close to what their forbears survived.

He acknowledged that he has been pulled over for “driving while black” and that the atrocities done to black people over the centuries have left many emotional scars — PTSD if you will — that have yet to be adequately treated.

But based on his experience of growing up in a two-parent family, five years in the army and 17 years working as a parole officer, he contends that even though blacks may be the victims of racism, they have to let go of seeing themselves as victims and take charge of their lives.

What struck me even more is that all of the black ministers present at that PTMAN gathering voiced their “amens” to what Alexander was saying, and so a week after that meeting, I asked Rev. Bill Teague, the pastor of Hope Tabernacle here in town, to meet me for coffee and tell me if the black pastors really agreed that black families are the foundation of everything else that does or doesn’t happen in the black community.

His response, in a word, was “absolutely.” Now Pastor Teague wasn’t denying that racism and white privilege and income disparity are very real, but he explained that he and all the other ministers see the root of their community’s problems as lying underground in the condition of the family.

He added a story that made it all come together for me. He called his church a “no judgment zone.” He said his members are working with a high school girl who got pregnant and gave birth to a baby. But instead of blaming her, they are pitching in with their time and money to make sure that, in her situation with all of its inherent deficits, she can succeed. And on top of that, because the boy who fathered the child is still around, the men of the congregation are stepping up and teaching that young man how to be a father.

Some people refer to that response by using the term equity.

Back to Rodney Alexander, he agreed that in this society skin color matters. If you have a dark complexion, you may have to go 12 yards in this society to get a first down, but you have a choice. You can use that reality as an excuse, or you can acquire the character needed to survive that system and even thrive. And family is where that happens or does not.

“I’m not talking about jobs,” he explained. “I’m talking about morals and values that allow you to build upon and achieve. The mindset that allowed Barack Obama to do what he did didn’t come from the schools he went to. It came from how he was raised. Knowing how to respect your elders and respect your peers, knowing how to listen and how to behave in public settings, I learned all of those things at home.”

Election season is upon us. Amidst the roil and rumble of state and national issues, the biggest local issue we will decide on November 6 is whether to prohibit video gambling in Forest Park bars. I plan to vote “YES” on this referendum.

Signs for and against the referendum are sprouting like weeds in the front yards of town. Bars supporting gambling are posting HUGE signs! No one likes them. I don’t like them! Yet, they stand proxy for important voices wanting to be heard, no matter which side you are on. If you’d like a “YES” sign, just email us at novginfp@gmail.com and we’ll get one right over to you!

Soon, people from both sides may be knocking at your door. Those of us working to reinstate the long-standing prohibition—the “YES” team—are your friends and neighbors.

We are happy to discuss the various reasons we want to restore the gambling prohibition and protect Small Town Charm for years to come.

The gambling lobby (the “no team”) has the money —$35,000 at last count, I kid you not— to hire lobbying consultants and people to knock on doors. They can flood your mailbox with flyers, while those of us against expanding gambling are reliant on the efforts of everyday citizens. I urge you to check the claims of any flyers you receive.

We strive to be honest and transparent in our materials. We should all be grateful for the Forest Park Review’s efforts to verify claims from both sides.

Our group of Forest Park residents does not have deep pockets. We are so grateful for your help with funding the legal efforts we have had to muster over the past three years of this initiative. Thank you! We do not have the resources the “NO” team has to hire canvassers, make huge signs, or hire outside organizers. We can’t buy you pizza and beer. We are doing our work around kitchen tables and basement ping pong tables. Our families help us collate flyers, our trunks are full of yard signs to deliver, our computers have too many open tabs of sites with research about the effects of gambling on small towns. We are as tired as you are of all this. But one thing we know for sure: archaic gimmicks that yield pennies to the village on the backs of enormous gambling losses by our neighbors and guests is no way to run things.

Come November 6, whatever the result, I know we can come together to envision the Forest Park of the future, one of vibrant, family-friendly venues and public spaces. In the meantime...let’s vote!

“Informational session” wasn’t very informational I went with an open mind to what was printed on a page of The Review as “a listening and informational session on the benefits of licensed video gaming in Forest Park”. My friends and I were graciously welcomed and allowed free drinks and bar food. However the “informational session” was a huge disappointment. After a brief informative introductory talk, a questions and answering session was quickly shut off by someone who appeared to “be running the show” We left by not hearing any real discussion of the matter for which we ahd patiently waited.

Thanks for your hospitality I would like to offer a big “Thank You” to the local business owners who represent the committee to Vote NO on prohibiting video gaming that was held this past Tuesday at McGaffer’s. The event was well attended and the conversations were polite and informative.

After all the negativity that has surrounded the gaming issue, it was nice to see people having civilized conversations that centered on facts. I was happy to hear the owners state that gaming has already brought in nearly $300,000 to the Village.

Most of our neighboring municipalities

already have machines as well, so getting rid of Forest Park’s machines will only cost Forest Parkers money and put the local businesses at a disadvantage.

For me, one of the most important issues is not letting Forest Park become cluttered with ugly signs. I talked to multiple owners, all of them said no matter what the city ordinance is, they are 100% committed to not putting up these types of signs and are making that pledge public.

I appreciated the owners taking the time to make their case and for throwing a fun little party to do it. Based on everything I learned, voting No on prohibition is the best thing for Forest Park and our local economy.

Piekarz receives award from Kiwanis Club

The Kiwanis Club of Forest Park will present its 2018 Ed O’Shea Service to Youth Award to Larry Piekarz at its Annual Dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 at the park district. The late Ed O’Shea was the Forest Park Village Attorney for many years and a Kiwanian for over 50 years. The Kiwanis Club initiated this award to recognize the contributions of individuals who have advanced the quality of life for our community youth. Piekarz, who is retiring from the park district in October, was instrumental in bringing the Roos Community Center to our community. He was also active in bringing the 16-inch No Glove Softball Hall of Fame to Forest Park.
