he Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office announced the cause of death for remains found in a car in Forest Park as a homicide. The Friday afternoon announcement said the method of death had yet to be determined, but asphyxia was considered a likely cause. The announcement also referred to the victim as a woman. Forest Park Police Chief Tom Aftanas said his department is now awaiting DNA test results from the Illinois State Police Crime Lab. Much of the investigation, Aftanas said, will hinge on those results. But they may not be available for up to six months. “It’s not a quick process,” he said. “Once we get an ID, we should be able to move forward from there.” Aftanas said there were no clues as to the victim’s identity in the car where the body was found, and police were unable to obtain fingerprints because of the almost entirely skeletal nature of remains — not even clothing that would point to the victim’s sex. As for when the victim might have died, Aftanas said he hasn’t been given any estimate by the Cook County Medical Examiner. While Forest Park detectives have been investigating the death as a homicide since the summer, the DNA test results are key. “Until then, we’re at a standstill,” Aftanas said. The unidentified remains were found on June 29 in an abandoned car on the 1000 block of Lathrop Avenue. The residents of the home where the car was parked had been renting the space to another man who had died some time ago. When the residents decided to move the car from their property, they found in the backseat a garbage can with bones inside. Police confirmed in July that the remains inside the vehicle were not those of the owner, and that the car’s owner did not die in Forest Park.

‘Ezra & Mike’ documentary hits the screen

he world premiere of Ezra & Mike: Facing Racial Tension in Forest Park, on July 29 at Slainte, was a success. Over 30 people came to the second floor of the bar to view the film. The sound and picture quality were good and the audience was attentive. I’m the only one who forgot to silence his cellphone. Mike Chiappetta, one of the “co-stars” of the documentary, brought his family. After the film was over, Mike and I participated in a lively Q&A. Mike is such an entertaining character, we’re considering using footage of him to create a second film, called “Mike.” Jordan Kuehn intended to come to the screening but had a last-minute conflict. Jordan more than made up for his absence, however, by bringing the film to the attention of the Lake Theatre. I received an invitation from Classic Cinemas’ co-owner Shirley Johnson to show the movie on a Saturday morning. She asked that we transfer the movie to a DVD and have it tested at The Lake, to see if it was compatible with their equipment. My Forest Park buddy, Ed Pickart, made

IS THERE A DOC IN THE HOUSE?: John Rice and Mike Chiappetta. the DVD for me free of charge, and it passed the test at the Lake Theatre. We’re going to show the film this Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10:30 a.m. Mike is coming and we hope to have another spirited Q&A. Admission is free and the doors open at 10 a.m. I met with one of The Lake’s managers, Doug Clayton, to discuss the screening. Doug said the Lake Theatre has allowed independent filmmakers to screen their films for years. He noted that Classic Cinemas is a small, family-owned chain of 14 theaters in Illinois. They strive to help the communities they serve by assisting local filmmakers. This feels like a dream come true, to see

the film on a big screen, with professionalquality sound. The Lake has always been my theater. When I was growing up in Oak Park, it seemed like a magical place, with the latest Hollywood epics — and in color. There was just one screen back then, highlighted by classic Art Deco décor. It then became a revival house where we watched a double-feature of An American in Paris and Singing in the Rain. Like many classic theaters, The Lake was later divided into seven, smaller cinemas. Ezra & Mike will be shown in an auditorium that seats 125. I hope we get a good turnout. I’m willing to show the film at other local venues in the future. I’m also hoping to air it on WTTW Channel 11. I’m fortunate to have a high school classmate with a strong connection to the PBS station. In the meantime, I hope to see you this Saturday. The film is only 22 minutes long and describes a racial incident that occurred in Forest Park in 1975. It’s a simple story of two families reaching across a racial divide to fight an injustice. I think it’s a timely film for our current racial divide. To enhance your enjoyment of the film, I promise to silence my cellphone. n■John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. What happens when you cross football and baseball? The annual Crosstown Boys Kickball Classic, between the Grant-White Eagles and Field-Stevenson Sharks, took place on Monday after school at The Park. This game serves as the intramural finale, a single match between the Forest Park thirdthrough fifth-grade boys from both sides of the Eisenhower. The Eagles, led by Coach Moroni and Coach Ali, scored the first run, kicked by Taylor Banks, after loading the bases. The run went unanswered by the Sharks, led by Coach Mills and Coach Petrey, as Eagles pitcher Danny Quiros thwarted the Sharks in their half of the first. The pitching duel continued in the top of the second, when Shark pitcher Javeon French stopped the Eagles from adding to their lead. Then the Sharks ignited in the bottom of the second and made their move. After loading the bases, the Sharks drove in Zayvion Rubio and Andy Fausto to take the lead. The Eagles responded in the third, with Carter Leonard driving in Zyion Lewis, before being slowed down by Shark Anthony Washington, who plucked a pop-up from the Eagles.

KICK OFF: Eagle Aulon Rrahmani launches the ball during the annual Crosstown Intramural Kickball Classic. The 2-2 tie didn’t last long, as the Sharks came up in the bottom of the inning and scored a run. The Sharks kicked to load the bases, but the Eagles shut down the inning with Tylor Bank’s diving catch of a scorching line drive by Quinten Thomas down the third-base line. In the fourth inning, the Eagles, now down by one, found their rhythm and added

a run to tie the game. But Field Stevenson answered by adding to their lead when hitter Aiden Ross drove in runs. The Sharks used their defensive skills to hold the Eagles to 3 runs in the fifth, with an inning-closing flyball catch by David Show. The Eagles couldn’t quite convert runs in the fifth and sixth, but the Sharks kept kicking, scoring the final runners, Antonio Gasse

and Zayvion Rubio, to take the lead 6-3. The Eagles did not give up in the top of the seventh, and with two outs, gained some momentum with a baserunner. But the Shark infielders were on their game, and made the final out with a play at second, as Sam Peterson tagged the base to end the game. Grant White, the Kickball Champions of 2016, graciously congratulated the Sharks on their victory. This Wednesday, the girl’s intramural teams will meet at the Middle School Gym for a volleyball match. The North Side and South Side boys will have the opportunity to face off again in early 2018 for the intramural basketball meet.

MISSION DIVERSITY: Interim Pastor Rev. Pongsak Limthongviratnon, left, at St. Paul Thai Lutheran Church in Forest Park. (Above) Headphones used for translation during service are available for members of the multilingual congregation.

Local church spreads gospel of diversity St. Paul Thai Church makes inclusion their mission By JYLLIAN ROACH Staff Reporter

While the U.S. seems to be more and more divided every day, one Forest Park church has made it their mission to be a house of diversity. St. Paul Thai Church prides itself on its focus on inclusion. Located at 7416 Dixon St. on a sleepy bricked roadway, St. Paul’s boasts a congregation of Asian Americans, African Americans, white Americans and a large swath of Thai immigrants, along with members of many sexual and gender orientations. While the building itself has a much longer history, the Thai church was founded, with a $5,000 budget, in 1985 by Christians from Thailand who wanted an interdenominational worship space, said Rev. Pongsak Limthongviratn. By 1990, church leaders realized the congregation was becoming more diverse naturally — Thai immigrants had married Americans, or had close American friends. Children born to Thai immigrants were more likely to speak English and follow American culture. The church welcomed the varied members and began to seek out ways to create an inclusive environment. “It becomes more diverse every day,” Limthongviratn said. “If you shut the door on all people, then you shut the door on being a church as well.” Sermons are given in both Thai and English, but thanks to headsets, similar to those used by the UN, everyone can hear a translated version of the sermon near-instantly. Limthongviratn and members of the church take translation even further — over the summer they translated a documentary about Martin Luther and added subtitles so that it was accessible to those who speak Thai. They’ve translated various religious documents, like The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. For St. Paul’s, accessibility is

a big part of inclusion. But it goes beyond worship. After church service on Sundays, the congregation heads to an upper portion of the church where the badminton court is. There a traditional Thai meal is offered. Though the congregation is fairly small — about 40 to 50

members — it is also mission-oriented, Limthongviratn said. In its 32 years, the church as raised and donated more than $1 million. They have helped build schools in Thailand and have donated countless dollars to relief efforts for natural disasters. More than this, though, the church takes seriously its responsibility as a sanctuary for those who need it. St. Paul’s also owns a small house where people in need of shelter can stay. They welcome students from Thailand. They house people who do not have homes of their own. They even shelter road-weary travelers “As a church, you have to open the door,” Limthongviratn said. “We welcome people.”

Devastation in Puerto Rico hits home

55,000

Forest Parker has strong connections with the island By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter

Mina Caban has been expressing her concern for victims of injustice through the Forest Park-based advocacy group Western Front for years, but her concern became very personal when Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico. Caban’s parents moved from Puerto Rico to the mainland in 1965 to improve their economic situation. Although they spoke very little English, she doesn’t call them immigrants because Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917. The Jones-Shafroth Act in 1917 conferred U.S. citizenship on the residents of Puerto Rico. Caban feels the impact of the devastation more personally than most because she spent many summers in her father’s hometown of Lares which is located in the central mountains of the island. She still maintains close contact with extended family members who live there. One irony among many in this situation is that Caban knows more about what is going on than most people living on the island, she said. Most residents are still without power, so they

can’t turn on the TV and find out the latest news. They can’t even make contact through their cellphones because there is no power to charge them and there are few places where there is a strong signal. In contrast, she is able to keep in touch through radio WKAQ AM and social media. What she is hearing from all sources is how overwhelming the destruction is. The first pictures she saw were of dead animal carcasses decomposing in farmers’ fields, like those on the farm her grandfather owned. Perhaps the most difficult part, she said, is not knowing. With no power in rural towns like Lares, residents can’t let loved ones know how they’re doing, and people like Caban cannot ask. Among athletes there is a saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Caban said the hurricane is revealing the character of her “jibaro” family. The word “jibaro” refers to country folk in Puerto Rico who have attained an almost mythical status in Puerto Rican culture. Jibaros are self-sufficient, hardworking country folk whose needs are simple, who know how to raise their own food, and who are resilient. On the one hand, she said, the devastation caused by Maria is proving the Puerto Rican character, but on the other, the damage done is “overwhelming” and the residents of the island simply don’t have the resources to recover on their own. For Forest Park residents who want to donate money to the relief effort, Caban said the major organizations like the American Red Cross do a good job, but giving to a local group on the ground like a church in Puerto Rico is usually more effective.

An interest in immigration from page 1 and attend school in the United States for a certain period of time without facing deportation. Roughly 100 DACA recipients are currently enrolled in medical schools around the country and roughly a third of them, 32 to be exact, attend the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood. In 2014, Stritch became the first medical school in the nation to explicitly open its doors to DACA recipients, largely owing to the work of Dr. Mark Kuczewski — a professor of medical ethics at Stritch, who also serves as director of its Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and chair of the Department of Medical Education. Kuczewski said his work with DACA students actually dates to 2011, when a professor at another university emailed him about an undocumented Loyola undergraduate student who was interested in going to medical school. “Because of my interests in immigration, the professor came to me and I worked with the administration to create this pathway,” Kuczewski said during an interview in September, not long after the medical school announced he would receive the 2017 Loyola

students across the country. The Forest Park resident said about half of the 32 students come from Latin America, while the other half come from places like South Korea, Pakistan, India and other parts of Asia. “DACA is extremely critical because it provides them relief from deportation and enables them to have a work permit,” Kuczewski said. “That’s key for them going on to practice medicine. They have to be able to work lawfully and receive payment. With DACA being rescinded, unless Congress does something like pass the DREAM Act, these students won’t go on to treat patients.” Trump’s decision to end DACA makes lending to already high-risk borrowers a nonstarter, since the probability of them paying the money back without a guarantee

D’Souza brings his light to the Lions and Forest Park By TOM HOLMES

I

Contributing Reporter

n June, Forest Park resident Austin D’Souza, along with 20,000 Lions Club members, attended the organization’s international convention in Seattle. Last month he participated in the 20th Annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Good Health of Vailankanni in India. His involvement in both events illustrate how D’Souza understands his purpose in life — burning brightly like a candle, as the flame is fueled by the wax until there is nothing left. D’Souza’s light certainly burned brightly in Mangalore, India, where he was born in 1950. Almost 30 years after he left India for Chicago, Mangalore locals still remember him as an actor and comedian on TV and the editor and publisher of three newspapers. D’Souza’s celebrity status in the eyes of regular citizens started when he began speaking out against injustice. In 1979, a Hindu nationalist member of parliament named O.P. Thyagi tried to get a law passed prohibiting Christians and Muslims from converting people. In response, the bishop in Mangalore called a meeting of priests, nuns and lay people to decide how to respond. When the bishop asked if anyone in the gathering wanted to say something, the 22-year-old D’Souza mounted the dais and proposed that Catholics in Mangalore stage a mass demonstration in the city’s central plaza. D’Souza printed 2,000 posters the next day, announcing the demonstration and denouncing Thyagi’s bill. On the day of the demonstration at Nehru Maidan Park, 60,000 Catholics gathered to pray the rosary and listen to speeches. The police were there and so was the Indian central intelligence agency, agents of which — he learned later on — were asking people in Mangalore about this young troublemaker. The event came off without incident and D’Souza made a name for himself. He also made a name for himself as the editor and publisher of three newspapers

D’Souza met his wife Terry and they married in 1980. “I had never even dated,” he recalled, “when a family I knew invited me to dinner at 8:30 one evening. There was a girl there who was living in Chicago at the time who had come back to visit her family. After arriving back home, he received a phone call from the girl’s family around midnight telling him to be at their parish church early the next morning. When he asked what for, they told him that he and the girl were going to sign their wedding banns. “What do you think? Are you willing to marry her?” they asked. “I didn’t know what to say,” he recalled. “When I called my parents and siblings that night, they said yes, go ahead.” Life changed radically for D’Souza after immigrating to the U.S. in 1981. Though he received a Ph.D. in business management

from the University of Illinois in 1986 and sent resumes everywhere, no one would hire him, often calling him overqualified. Others told him he lacked experience working with Americans, to which he replied, “How can I get experience if you don’t give me a chance?” He finally landed a job as a lathe operator in a factory that made contact lenses. He got the job because he didn’t mention his Ph.D. on the application. Over time, the company recognized his leadership ability and promoted him to supervisor, but never anything commensurate with his qualifications. When asked if he thought racism was the cause for the rejections, he answered simply “of course.” What a contrast to his experience in India. He said, “I felt like a bird in a cage.” His experience with the Lions Club International here in the U.S., however, has been different. The list of awards and offices he has held in the fraternal organization fill a

whole page. Perhaps his most noteworthy accomplishment is starting what is known as the Vision First program. In 2004, he was the district governor and learned that even though students in Chicago Public Schools were given eye exams, they weren’t given glasses when they needed them. That first year, partnering with Lens Crafters, the Lions Club donated 6,000 eyeglasses to kids in need. In 2016, 85,000 received them, and the program was taken over by the city of Chicago. He has received three International Presidents Medals from Lions Clubs International, a Lifetime Community Service Award from President George W. Bush, and he and Terry received the Best Humanitarian Couple Award from Congressman Danny Davis. Austin and Terry have been married for 37 years, have four adult children and have lived in Forest Park since 1981. The couple has invested in the Forest Park community. Austin, for example, has served on the St. Bernardine Parish Council and school board, participated in the Forest Park Neighborhood Watch, worked with the Friends of the Library, been a member of the Chamber of Commerce and participated in the Forest Park Citizens Police Academy. Last year he became a member of the newly formed Forest Park Diversity Commission.

Cops: Stop signs damaged by drunken students Three men between the ages of 18 and 20, who allegedly caused a disturbance at a Madison Street bar during the early morning hours of Sept. 29, were later charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, and two of them also were charged with reckless conduct and criminal damage to property after removing two stop signs and damaging others at the intersections of Franklin and Circle, Elgin and Washington, and Elgin and Franklin. An officer on patrol reported observing two of the men carrying stop signs and one subject jumping up and down on a downed metal stop sign pole. Two other stop sign poles were found on the ground at that intersection, removed from another location. The same officer had been called to Doc Ryan’s on Madison Street earlier that morning and the men were asked to leave the area. They reportedly asked the officer for a ride to Concordia University, but the officer refused. One of the men, an 18-year-old from Michigan, had his arm in a sling; he was only charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor. The two others, ages 18 and 20, both residents of Texas, were charged with damaging the stop signs and reckless conduct.

Motor vehicle theft ■■Forest Park police responded to Enterprise Rent-a-Car, 7600 Roosevelt Road on Sept. 29, after an employee reported that a woman, accompanied by two men, took the keys to a rental vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup truck, and left the area. The vehicle was last seen heading north toward Roosevelt Road. ■■A 32-year-old Prospect Heights man called police on Sept. 26 to report that a truck that he parked in a lot in the 1300 block of Hannah Avenue within the past month had been stolen. The victim owns a hauling company and had been having trouble finding a driver for the truck, which was being stored at the location. On Sept. 26, the victim noticed the truck was missing although he still was in possession of the keys.

Employee suspected of stealing furniture An official at Compel LLC, 7540 Roosevelt Road, called police after learning that an employee had allegedly stolen furniture from the office while he was out of town on a business trip. According to the police report, the employee had a U-Haul truck back up to a loading dock and had chairs and tables loaded into it. At the time the report was taken, it was unclear exactly how much furniture was missing. The investigation continues.

Burglary ■■Sometime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sept. 29, someone broke out the basement window of a residence in the 1100 block of Desplaines Avenue and ransacked a bedroom, taking $300 in cash, jewelry, a watch and a phone charger. The offenders also apparently stole eight pairs of gym shoes and a mountain bike, which was taken from the garage. Police also found a bag at the scene containing items, including discharge papers from a local hospital, which did not belong to anyone living in the residence. The papers indicated that the person was released from the hospital at 9 a.m. on Sept. 27. ■■Forest Park police responded to a residence in the 100 block of Brown Avenue on Sept. 28 about 4:50 p.m. after a resident called to report a garage burglary that had taken place just five minutes earlier. The victim told police his son observed two men exiting the garage with a bicycle. The son was able to scare off the offenders, who dropped the bike. One of the offenders fled on another bike; the other fled on foot. Inside the garage, police reportedly recovered a black BMX bike that did not belong to the homeowner. The handlebars were broken, leading police to believe they broke into the garage to steal a new bike and leave the broken one behind. A vehicle inside the garage also appeared to have been ransacked. A pair of Allied Metal sunglasses, valued at $450, were missing from the vehicle. ■■A 34-year-old Forest Park man contacted police to report that someone had broken into his vehicle, which was parked in a lot in the 100 block of Circle Avenue sometime between 12:20 and 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 30. Missing from the vehicle were a jar a loose change and a lime green lunch bag containing IDs, a pocket knife, phone chargers and $300 in cash. There were no signs of forced entry.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Sept. 18-24, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Do you live in Oak Park, River Forest or Proviso Township and need to schedule a mammogram? During the month of October, women who live in these communities can receive a mammogram for no cost at Rush Oak Park Hospital.* Now, there’s no reason not to have one. Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in women — and mammography is the most effective screening tool. Experts at Rush recommend that most women have mammograms every year beginning at age 40. Do you qualify? • You must live in Oak Park, River Forest or Proviso Township. Proof of residence will be requested at the time of your visit (e.g., voter registration card, utility bill or personal check). • Your mammogram must be performed by Oct. 31, 2017. Digital mammography saves lives. We offer the latest technology in breast screening, including 3-D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis. * Funds are provided by a private grant for residents of Oak Park, River Forest and Proviso Township.

Proviso East Versus Hinsdale South 9/29/17 Proviso East (0-6) played HinsHins dale South rather evenly in the first quarter, but eventually big plays by the Hornets and mistakes by the Pirates led to a 51-6 defeat. Hinsdale South quarterback Justin Kolzow’s quick strike touchtouchdown passes of 59, 59 and 25 yards made it impossible for East to sustain any momentum. The Pirates lone touchdown came on a beautiful 25-yard touchdown pass from

Kurt Sturghill to Lateak Hunt that followed a gutsy pass completion on a fake punt. The defense was able to get up field tallying 6 tackles for a loss and 1 sack, but in the end, they were too vul vulnerable to the big play. This Saturday the Pirates gear up for their Homecoming matchup with cross township rival Proviso West.

Forest Park and the Ike

S

till years away but with a process that has been grinding on for years already, Forest Park Village Council members will be asked next week to sign on in support of the eventual rebuilding of the Eisenhower Expressway by the state. Village Administrator Tim Gillian notes that 2023 is the soonest the from-the-dirt-up rebuild of the nearly 60-yearold highway could get started. First, that will be here before we know it. And second, there isn’t an infrastructure project that will have more impact on various aspects of day-to-day life in Forest Park than this project. We’re not just talking asphalt here. The rebuild will add two lanes to the highway through town while staying within the current ditch. The left-hand entry and exit at Harlem will disappear and be replaced by safer but more locally impactful/unsightly right-hand points of entry and exit. The Blue Line will be rebuilt concurrently. The always tangled confluence of the CTA terminus, the Desplaines highway entrance and commuter parking will be rethought and remade. And bridges at Harlem, Circle and Desplaines will, thankfully, be widened to include broader sidewalks and bike lanes. This doesn’t cover the multi-year disruption of construction that will be real and disruptive. And the village government will need to come up with funding for its relatively small but still significant piece of the action. The village attorney told the council recently that the action of signing on is less about binding future councils to specifics than to indicate that the Illinois Department of Transportation has been diligent in gaining concurrence from stakeholders. There’s a lot to like about this plan to date. Staying in the ditch while adding lanes is at the top of that list. We’d have preferred to see concrete action to extend the CTA el line to at least Mannheim Road. But the Ike isn’t going to fix itself and Forest Park has done a more than fair job of watching out for the interests of its residents as this massive project approaches.

St. John at 150

Few are the institutions that survive to 150. And virtually none survive that have not grown and shrunk, overcome jarring challenges, benefitted from generosity and good fortune (answered prayers, if you prefer), actively adapted and evolved with grace. This fall Forest Park celebrates as St. John Lutheran Church marks 150 years of true service to this village. That service has changed from early days when St. John was a welcoming home to immigrant and second-generation German American Lutherans. Today, with a congregation that has grown smaller and a handsome school that has closed, St. John continues to actively seek and create its new role of service to Forest Park. Partnerships and alliances are welcomed and essential as new hubs of activity are fostered. The recent pact with the local YMCA, the hosting of a community garden, the long affiliation with Housing Forward all indicate a confident and holy place moving toward its next milestone.

Waking up on the wrong side of Monday

P

astor Walter Mitty woke up Monday morning a week ago feeling both irritable and depressed. It all began on Sunday at coffee hour. Gerhardt Aschenbrenner started going off about how “these young people spend all their time on their phones.” “They bow their heads during the sermon,” he complained, “so everyone thinks they are being pious, but what they are really doing is texting each other. I know. I sat up in the choir loft today and was able to see everything. It’s disrespectful.” Asch’s wife, Dorothy, tried to calm him down, but while she was shushing him, Dominique took up the baton and started to run with it. “I’m black,” he began, “and I grew up in the Robert Taylor homes, so I know what discrimination feels like, but these football players kneeling during the national anthem — that’s really disrespectful.” “OK, OK, Dominique,” shot back Sharissa Hawkins, “I respect where you’re coming from, but if you’re going to protest something, kneeling is about as respectful a way of doing it as I can think of.” That got Hilda Hossenbrenner going. “I was baptized in this church 80 years ago,” she began, “and haven’t missed more than 10 Sundays since. You talk about disrespect, my parents would turn over in their graves if they knew that guitars and drums were being played in our sanctuary.” Eric Anderson leaned over to his wife, Debbie, during Hilda’s rant and whispered, “They’d also turn over in their graves if they knew that worship was in English instead of German!” “They went on and on with their gripes,” Mitty vented to his neighbor Michael Rosenthal when they bumped into each other around noon the next day. “I mean, Michael, I’m all for respect. I hear where Dominique is coming from, but I also think Sharissa has a good point. Kneeling is a pretty respectful way of protesting.” Michael sat down on his front steps. He felt that his friend was just warming up with his list of complaints about his members. “Sometimes I feel like everywhere I turn I’m deal-

ing with children, Michael,” he continued. “Everyone from our president to talk show hosts to college basketball coaches to drivers on the Eisenhower are behaving like selfcentered adolescents.” Mitty’s neighbor listened for 10 more minutes until his neighbor had finished his indictment of the majority of the human race. He didn’t want to offend his good friend, but he felt like he had to say something in response. “So, Walt, are you saying that you and I are the only grown-ups remaining in Poplar Park?” “Meaning what, Michael?” Michael decided approach his friend from a point of view he could relate to. “You know we Jews are as concerned about social justice as you are, right? “Yeah. You said the concept is ‘heal or repair the world.’” “Right. Tikkun Olam. But in a couple of days we have our Day of Atonement.” “I know and I even put a Yom Kippur card in the mail to you yesterday.” “Sheyman dank, my friend. I’ve been thinking,” said Michael, “that on Yom Kippur we spend all day focusing on our own sins and how we need to repair not the world but our own relationship with God.” “So, Michael, are you saying I should take the log out of my own eye before I try to take the specks out of my neighbors’?” “I certainly don’t think you have a log in your eye,” Mitty’s neighbor replied. “You know how much I respect you. But the high holy days got me thinking about how everybody in our society seems to be blaming everybody else for the polarization and the terrible state of discourse in this country. And I started wondering if, before blaming those we don’t agree with, we first looked inside ourselves honestly. Maybe we’d find enough there to work on that we’d at least speak in more measured tones about those who see the world differently than we do.” Herman Mitty’s oldest son always had a hard time accepting criticism. On the other hand, he believed that if the shoe fit he should wear it. He decided to change the subject to how Michael thought the Cubs would do in the playoffs. The change in his tone let Michael know that his neighbor was thinking seriously about what he had said. Tom Holmes, a retired Lutheran pastor, writes a column for our sister publication, the Forest Park Review.

I respect where

you’re coming from, but if you’re going to protest something, kneeling is about as respectful a way of doing it as I can think of of.

A Scanathon is an event the purpose of which is to preserve family photos by scanning them. On Sept. 30, Forest Park Baptist Church held what could be the world’s first Family Photo Scanathon. Interested participants brought family photos they wished to preserve and then were able to scan the photos. The participants received a CD on which the digital files of their scanned photos were copied to. The digital files were erased off the scanning computer, and the participants were able to take their disk to the drug store and print out the photos as they pleased. There are three benefits to scanning family photographs, all of which can create a special kind of connection. The first is the historic connection. I have a digital file that contains the image of my paternal great-great-great grandparents. He was born in 1822 and she was born in 1818. I was given the digital file at a family reunion. I do not know where the original photograph is. I can look into the faces of relatives who lived almost 200 years ago because someone cared enough to scan the original photograph and someone cared enough to share the digital file with me. There is also the geographical connection. A cousin once entrusted me with copies of family death certificates. Neither she nor I knew how the people described in the documents were related to us. I was later scanning some old photographs and discovered notes on the back that clearly stated names and my relationship to the pictured people. From this evidence I determined that my maternal great-great-grandparents came from the city of Pilsen in the present day Czech Republic. And yes, the Chicago neighborhood is named after this very same city. Finally there is the personal connection. Sometimes a photo will make you think of a particular instance, conversation or experience you had with another person. I have a scanned photo of my long-dead grandfather. Every time I look at this photo, I think of

the only joke he ever told me. He would say to me, “Michael?” and I would say to him “Yes, Grandpa?” And he would say “I have a friend with a racket.” To which I would ask, “Do you mean a tennis racket or a scam?” “That’s the joke” he said and then he gave his sandpaper laugh. Historic, geographical and even personal connections can be discovered and reinforced by simply scanning and saving a photograph. Forest Park Baptist Church holds games nights along with Scanathons. Daniel (Dan) Joseph Rice, 67, of Berwyn (formally of Forest Park and Oak Park) died on Sept. 26, 2017. Born on Dec. 7, 1949 at St. Anne Hospital in Chicago to parents Edward Francis Rice and Elizabeth Ann Conerty, he was a dedicated and hard-working attorney his entire career, the sole practitioner of his law practice in both Oak Park and Forest Park for over 40 years, running a highly-successful gen-

eral practice. He was a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep, Loyola University, and John Marshall Law School. Dan was the brother of (the late) Ed, Betty Ann, Eileen, John, Julie, Joan, Marilyn and Tim; the fiancé of Tamara (Tam) Trutwin; the father of Meagan and Bridget with his second wife, (the late) Moira, and Jennifer, Carrie, Matt and Kevin with his first wife, Madonna.
