Rory Hoskins, former village commissioner, president of the Proviso Township Democratic Organization and mem-

ber of the Illinois Municipal League, is passing political nomination petitions for Forest Park’s highest office, aiming to unseat the two-decade reign of current Mayor Anthony Calderone.

Hoskins, 47, is the first prospective mayoral candidate to

I’d even stay on until it got to the point where they’re well established and I’d just go on my merry way,” said Ed Nutley, 82, co-owner of the business with his son Mike. “I’ve been doing this, in the grocery business, probably since I’ve been 15. There’s too many things I’ve been missing out on.”

A price for Ed’s Way is not listed on the Loopnet real estate listing site, and realtor David King declined to comment on the price the pair is seeking.

The state of the union as I turn 64

aul McCartney wrote “When I’m 64” when he was 16 years old. It was a tribute to his father, who had just turned 64.

It was an idyllic look at lovers aging together. Now that I’m turning 64, I thought I’d see if the lyrics still ring true.

“When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now …”

It’s no longer many years from now and my hair is in training for a comb-over.

“Will you still be sending me a valentine, birthday greetings, bottle of wine?” My wife and I stopped exchanging valentines many years ago. She still gives me birthday greetings but the wine is for her.

“If I’d been out till quarter to three, would you lock the door?” She certainly would lock the door. Fortunately, I haven’t stayed out till quarter to three, since I stopped going to Midnight Mass. To answer the next musical question, she still needs me and occasionally feeds me.

“Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight if it’s not too dear.” It’s true we rent cottages every summer, but the Isle of Wight would be too dear.

Michigan is pricey enough. “We shall scrimp and save.” I do the scrimping, she does the saving.

“Grandchildren on your knee, Vera, Chuck and Dave.” I don’t know how many kids she can fit on her knee but she’d have to make room for Troy, Brody, Will and John Henry.

“You’ll be older too” is not something I would recommend saying to your spouse. “And if you say the word, I could stay with you.” Regardless of what word she says, I’m not going anywhere.

“I could be handy mending a fuse when your lights have gone.” I no longer fool around with fuses, but I can definitely flip a circuit breaker. “You can knit a sweater by the fireside, Sunday mornings go for a ride.”

I only found out in recent years that my wife can knit but she’s out of luck with the fireside.

I like Sunday morning rides but only if I have a paying passenger in the backseat.

“Doing the garden, digging the weeds, who could ask for more?” No one attacks weeds the way my wife does. I don’t help with gardens. It was part of our vows.

Again, she still needs me, for flipping circuit breakers if nothing else and I really appreciate it when she feeds me. “Send me a postcard, drop me a line, stating point of view.” That’s not going to happen. We communicate strictly by text. “Indicate precisely what you mean to say.” That’s the beauty of texting, especially if she includes an emoji. “Yours sincerely wasting away.” I only use this salutation to end my business letters.

“Give me your answer.” What was the question again? “Fill in a form.” Make sure to add your user name and password. “Mine for evermore.” Evermore isn’t as far in the future as it once was. Obviously, she still needs me, for cuddling in cold weather. She still feeds me but only if I clean the kitchen afterwards.

Mattress Firm spared in initial wave of closures The Mattress Firm store in Forest Park was spared from closure for now, after the chain announced Oct. 5 it was filing for bankruptcy and closing some 210 stores across the U.S. Mattress Firm plans to eventually close another 500 stores nationwide in an effort to “strengthen our balance sheet and accelerate the optimization of our store portfolio,” Steve Stagner, executive chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement.

“Leading up to the holiday shopping season, we will exit up to 700 stores in certain markets where we have too many locations in close proximity to each other,” Stagner said in a statement. “We intend to use the additional liquidity from these actions to improve our product offering, provide greater value to our customers, open new stores in new markets, and strategically expand in existing markets where we see the greatest opportunities to serve our customers.”

Mattress Firm has been open in Forest Park for at least four years. A spokeswoman did not respond to an interview request about how many people work at the store. The chain was founded in 1986 in Houston, Texas. It operates approximately 3,230 stores in 49 states.

New party forms as D209 board race comes into focus

West defeats East in cross-district showdown

Proviso United Party is chaired by a vocal board critic

A new political party has formed to take on incumbent Proviso Township High School District 209 board members. Board President Ned Wagner and members Theresa Kelly and Claudia Medina have expressed plans to run for re-election on the Proviso Together slate.

In April, they could face members of the Proviso United Party, which was created on Oct. 1, according to State Board of Elections records.

The party is registered at 7227 W. Madison in Forest Park. The party’s financial institution is listed as a Chase Bank in Oak Park. The party had $1,500 in funds available as of Oct. 1.

Antoinette Gray, a local businesswoman and an outspoken critic of the current board and Supt. Jesse Rodriguez, is listed as the party’s chairperson. Ray Williams, of Maywood, is listed as the party’s co-chairperson.

The three candidates listed are Beverly Robertson, a school counselor who works in D200, according to her LinkedIn; and Denard Wade and Laighton Scott — both Maywood firefighters.

Gray ran against former D209 board president and current state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th) in 2014, but was removed from the ballot after a residency challenge.

She was a staunch supporter of Proviso Together during the 2015 elections, but after the party achieved a 7-person supermajority in the wake of the elections, Gray has gradually become a vocal critic of the board.

In the summer, for instance, Gray was outspoken against ANTOINETTE GRAY the board’s decision to hire Anthony Brazouski, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources.

She also opposed the board approving a 5-year contract for Supt. Rodriguez.

Gray could not be immediately reached for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

Proviso West defeated Proviso East 34-18 in the annual gridiron clash of rivals on Oct. 6 at West. The victory was the first this season for the Panthers, 1-6, while the Pirates fell to 2-6 for the season.

The Panthers’ win was powered by the ground game of running backs Brandon Smith and Brandon Gwin-Smith. Smith was the MaxPreps Player of the Game, who notched 174 yards on 21 carries for three touchdowns while Gwin-Smith carried 12 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

The Panthers’ defense also came up big with a fumble recovery in the third quarter and causing two other fumbles.

West earned 356 total yards to East’s 166, with 330 of the Panthers’ yards earned on the ground.

The Panthers face the York Dukes on Friday, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m., at York while the Pirates face the Willowbrook Warriors on Friday, Oct. 12, 7:15 p.m. at home.

D209’s graduation to stay at UIC There was some preference to have ceremony at local facility or on campus

The UIC Pavilion in Chicago will remain the graduation venue for Proviso Township High School District 209 students despite some school board members’ preference to have the ceremonies take place locally.

“I’m used to having [graduation on campus],” said board member Theresa Kelly.

“We used to have it outside.”

During a regular board meeting on Sept. 18, Nicole Howard, the assistant superintendent for academics, student and family services, said that district officials searched a variety of local venues.

“Space was a huge factor,” said Howard.

“Many of the local venues are suitable for crowds of less than 2,000, including many of the local universities, and that poses a big problem, especially for the larger schools like Proviso West.”

Howard said that with a capacity of 2,000, “you’re looking at limiting families to about two tickets.”

She said that holding graduation ceremonies at East and West, the capacity decreases to around 1,100. The addition of

chairs might push that number up, she said.

Howard said that the cost of rentals, paying faculty and maintenance staff, sound systems, temperature controls, among other costs, could add up to around $40,000. The capacity limitations and the cost, she said, made holding graduation on the district’s campuses a less feasible option than holding it at another venue.

She said that the cost of renting the Donald Stevens Convention Center in Rosemont, one of the closest venues big enough to hold the graduation, is around $50,000 — much more than the roughly $32,000 it costs to rent out the Pavilion, which can seat up to 8,000 people.

“UIC is still the best option for us to house the graduation comfortably and costeffectively,” she said.

Jeremy Horn, who graduated from Proviso East in 2003, recalled for board members that during his graduation ceremony, held in the high school’s football stadium, the tickets were limited.

Currently, students are given 10 tickets, with the option of requesting more if they need them. The board did not vote on the matter, but a consensus of members directed district staff to work on securing the UIC Pavilion.

Man dodges punch, detains suspect News that’s close to home

Police responded about 1:29 a.m. to calls of a car alarm sounding and a mysterious person sighted on the 1300 block of Circle Avenue on Oct. 7. Officers saw a man run behind a home and flee south down an alley toward Roosevelt Road. They later found him “checking on cars” on the 1200 block of Circle. There, a car owner told police he found the man in his parked Hyundai and that he was “stuffing things in his pockets.” When the victim approached the man, the man asked, “Hey is this your car?” then got out of the Hyundai and attempted to punch the victim. The victim dodged the man’s punch and pushed the man to the ground, holding him there until police arrived.

Police identified the man as Antwon Johnson, who told officers he was homeless and steals from cars in order to eat. Officers found several tools, electronic cords, a knife and change on Johnson.

He received a felony charge of burglary to the Hyundai and one count of criminal trespass to real property.

Police arrived about 7:20 p.m. on Oct. 2 at Taco Bell, 7510 Roosevelt Road, on a call about a fight. A witness told officers a mother and her two daughters entered about 15 minutes earlier and said they were not happy with their service at the drivethrough window. One woman began yelling and threw a bucket of water and a “slippery when wet” floor sign over the counter. The trio then left the restaurant momentarily but returned and punched an employee in the right eye and upper lip. Witnesses separated the group. The women left the restaurant and fled south in a red sedan.

The victim was transported to Loyola Medical Center for care.

Traffic accident, DUI Police responded to a minor traffic accident about 12:22 a.m. on Oct. 3 in front of US Bank, 7525 Madison St. The driver of a Hyundai Elantra told police a Kia rearended her vehicle. Officers parked their squad cars behind the two vehicles, in an effort to stop them from fleeing, but the Kia snaked around the cars and fled north on Desplaines. Police eventually stopped the

vehicle in the alley behind 7519 Madison St. Officers asked the driver for identification, and Denise Williams-Bergemann handed police her Illinois driver’s license and Cook County voter registration card. When she tried to exit the vehicle, she almost fell to the ground, and used an officer’s arm and car door for support. Police smelled a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.

The woman told police she had been drinking earlier in the day. She was placed in custody and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

DUI on Madison Police spotted a Toyota Camry westbound on Madison Street, weaving through the lanes at 12:19 a.m. on Oct. 7. Officers stopped Robert Frey, 33, of Wheaton, at 1100 Madison St., asked him for his identification, and Frey handed officers a jumble of credit cards along with his driver’s license. Police smelled alcohol on his breath, and Frey told officers he had drank two beers at Mugsy’s prior to driving.

Frey stopped and started the walk-andturn test, lost balance while standing on one leg, and was unable to focus on the top of the officer’s pen. During the tests, he continually asked police if he could just park his car and call an Uber home. He refused a breath test.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without lights when required.

Star Energy scam A representative claiming to be from Star Energy Partners LLC approached a home on the 100 block of Marengo Avenue on Sept. 29.

The victim, 66, told police the representative was fast-talking, and said Star Energy Partners was a partner with the ComEd energy provider. The victim signed a contract the representative provided him. After he signed, the man told him his contract with ComEd would be terminated. The victim told police he was not warned of this before signing. He immediately told the Star Energy representative he wanted to cancel the contract he just signed, but the rep told him that he needed to contact Star Energy himself.

He called Star Energy’s offices and a representative there told him his contract with the firm would be terminated, and that they would notify ComEd to continue his old contract. On Oct. 1, the victim received a letter from ComEd acknowledging the change to Star Energy.

He called ComEd, reinstated his old account, and then contacted Star Energy again to formally cancel the agreement. He filed a police report to warn other victims of deceptive practices.

Man in truck rides off with merchandise A man in a semi rode off with a trailer full of Walmart merchandise about 1:51 a.m. on Oct. 5, according to security footage from the retail store.

The footage shows a man drive to the rear of 1300 Desplaines Ave., get out of the truck and examine a store trailer full of merchandise. The man then drove up to the trailer, hooked it to the rear of his truck and exited the lot, fleeing north on Desplaines.

Walmart employees said the trailer contained approximately $128,700 worth of shoes, electronics, pharmacy items and more.

Chicago police recover stolen Tesla A man stole a Tesla parked on the 100 block of Marengo about 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 6. The victim told police he left his Tesla parked there for no more than 10 minutes and was leaving his friend’s house, when he watched a man get into his car and drive north on Marengo Avenue. When he attempted to call 911, he realized his iPhone 7 was still in the car, which he purchased last week.

The victim was able to track his iPhone, and told police it was located in Chicago in the North Lawndale neighborhood. The Chicago Police Department recovered the Tesla at 11:05 a.m. in a garage on the 1800 block of Christiana Ave. in the city. An officer said the garage has been a “stash place” for stolen vehicles in the past. The iPhone was not found in the car.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Oct. 1-8, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

These cases have not been adjudicated.

D91 is debt free, but faces deficit

District 91 schools are debt free although the district is operating at a deficit for the second year in a row, according to a presentation by Edward Brophy, vice superintendent of operations, at a Board of Education meeting on Sept. 13.

D91’s projected revenue for fiscal year 2018-19 is $17.7 million, down about $200,000 from the year before. Expenditures are projected at $20.6 million, up from $20.4 million the year prior. The $2.9 million shortfall will likely come from reserves. The district’s fiscal year runs from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.

“We budget conservatively for revenue and conservatively for expenditures, so our revenue is greater and our expenditures end up being lower than these numbers,” Brophy said, adding: “We are debt free. We retired our debt five years ago … which saved taxpayers two payments that would have been included on their property tax bill, as well as saving about $30,000 in interest charges.”

Eighty-eight percent of the district’s revenue comes from property taxes and other local sources, and the majority, or $13.3 million, is spent on instruction and instructional support, which includes D91’s gifted, preschool, special education programs and more. The district anticipates spending $550,000 on student outplacement tuition for services like special education this fiscal year. Brophy said D91 has also invested more in improving teacher resources and instruction this fiscal year, working with the National Equity Proj-

ect and Power Scholars Academy in an effort to improve staff understanding of equity and narrow the gap in student test scores between majority and minority groups.

“We’ve increased more resources for our improvement of instruction, and that aligns directly with our strategic plan this year,” Brophy said. “We are a school district where our greatest combined expenditures are for people. When you combine salaries and benefits, that’s our greatest cost.”

Twenty-six percent of D91’s revenue, or $5.4 million, goes toward district operations, which includes food services, transportation, building maintenance, etc. Included in this budget item is also the $50,000 that D91 spends on its crossing guards, a resource the district splits with the village.

Nine percent, or $1.9 million, is allocated for school and district leadership.

Revenue assumptions include spending $175,000 on building improvements, and $57,950 on an upgrade to the library and media center at Field-Stevenson Intermediate Elementary School. Once D91’s 10-year life safety survey is complete in early 2019, Brophy said the district also plans on transferring about $1 million from its transportation fund to its operations and maintenance account to upgrade buildings.

Revenue assumptions include receiving 85 percent of state and federal revenue owed, since changes in leadership and the state’s ability to pay have shortchanged D91 in the past, Brophy said.

“Once there is a new governor, anything goes in terms of what could happen to the amounts we would expect to receive in the late spring,” he said. “It’s possible that those

dollars could be impacted. We hope they wouldn’t be, but we’ve learned over time that it’s definitely good to build in some flexibility in terms of not expecting to receive all of the revenue.”

The district also assumes it will collect 97 percent of the property tax owed — “we never receive 100 percent of property tax revenue and that could be due to people who are behind on their property taxes,” Brophy said — and earn $150,000 in interest from its investment portfolio. Last fiscal year, Brophy said, D91 captured about $200,000 in interest earnings from its group of investments, which is controlled by the Proviso Township school treasurer and comprises primarily bank certificates of deposits.

“In this climate, both politically and economically, anything could happen to the markets at any time,” Brophy said. “We don’t want to have the expectation that we will do as well as we did in the prior year’s past performance.”

“There’s a couple of possibilities,” King said of Ed’s Way’s future. “One, obviously, is another food store, it would just step in; two, a different type business occupying that building for a different use; and three, potentially it’s a residential development site.

Whether that means single-family homes, whether that means townhouses, whether that means three flats, the marketplace will dictate that.”

King said he’s already talked to “several parties” but the transition could take time.

“We could be here two more years, so we still need the neighbors’ support while this is going on,” said Mike Nutley, 62.

Growing up, Forest Park Police Sergeant Christopher Chin’s family owned a Chinese restaurant on the south side of Chicago. The restaurant closed when Chin was 3-yearsold, so he doesn’t remember much about its operations. But what he does remember is helping his grandmother cook while his parents were out working. Chin’s grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from China.

“My grandmother lived with us, so I spent a lot of time with her in the kitchen where I absorbed knowledge by watching her,” he said.

Looking back on family gatherings, Chin said his family ate a lot of Chinese food. But they certainly were not stuck in that culinary rut. “For Thanksgiving, we’d do a traditional turkey. The only Chinese element was that the stuffing would be made from rice,” he said.

As he got older, Chin loved watching cooking shows, like “The Frugal Gourmet” and “The French Chef ” with Julia Child.

He recalls having a normal childhood living in the Forest View-Sickney area. While a student a Lyons Township High School, he played violin in the school orchestra and was a member of the track and cross country teams. He graduated from Loyola University in 2002 and went to work at a veterinary hospital in Chicago, thinking he might apply to veterinary school.

The more he considered the long, difficult road which he would have to have to travel to become a veterinarian, the more he began to consider other options. “I enjoyed my time at the hospital,” he said. “But I didn’t know if I wanted my life to go in that direction. After doing some “soul searching” and talking to two of his brothers-in-law who were both police officers, he decided to take the police exam. In 2008, the village offered him a conditional offer of employment and, since then, has rose through the ranks to become one of Forest Park’s finest.

Over the years, Chin’s career path side tracked and swerved, but his love for those cooking shows on the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) never faltered. He remembers watching a show a few years ago in which chefs smoked a whole hog in the traditional Southern way. Chin was awed.

“You can go to Chinatown and get a roast pig. I had experienced that growing up,” he said. “But smoking a pig is totally different than doing it the Chinese way where the skin bubbles up and is crispy like chicharones. I got fascinated.”

So fascinated, in fact, that after doing research he went in his backyard and built a cinder block pit for smoking whole hogs. “I had always been doing ribs and partial smokes on my Weber grill,” he said. “I’d never seen whole hogs done up north here that way. I like a challenge.”

He said smoking a whole hog takes 18 to 20 hours, at 225 to 250 degrees, and starts by burning a hardwood fire down to its coals and then shoveling the coals under the front and back of the hog. Because the coals only last for about 30 min-

utes, the process is continuous.

“Low and slow. That’s the name of the game,” Chin said.

He added: “It’s a labor of love. When I tasted the first hog I ever did, it was like nothing I had ever tasted. Something clicked. I said to myself ‘I’ve got something here. Everything hits the spots. I can get into this.’”

The problem, of course, is that this particular labor of love takes almost a whole day out your life. Chin adapted by eventually buying two cookers that do not take as much individual attention, even though they require just as much time.

He also learned that his neighbor Juan Silva was a pit master at a barbecue restaurant. The two got talking, discov-

ered that they share a common passion for smoking meats and formed their own catering company in 2016, which they named Beach Avenue BBQ. They also formed StreetSide, a grassroots group that cooks and delivers warm meals, clothing and self-care products to those in need.

In Beach Avenue BBQ’s first year, they catered the LaGrange Park National Night Out. Chin also competed in Forest Park’s Ribfest. The next year, they earned top honors at the Chili & Beer Fest in Forest Park, coming in first with their autumn chili comprised of smoked pork, chorizo, hominy corn and avocado aioli.

But this year was the year that everything really came together. Chin won first place out of 25 contestants at Ribfest. Beach Avenue BBQ also secured 11 commitments to sell smoked meats at the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce farmers’ market.

Chin still practices cooking as a family affair. His son, 3, and daughter, 5, both help him prepare the hog by trimming its membranes, tendons and helping use a metal syringe to inject the hog with a solution of apple cider vinegar, apple juice and “secret ingredients.” His son will also hand his father pieces of wood for the smoker and periodically look through the smoker’s ports to “make sure the fire is burning well.” Likewise Chin’s mother and father helped at the Ribfest last month.

“To me, barbecuing is a family-oriented activity,” Chin said. “I spend time with the kids. I bring them in and hopefully teach them something along the way.”

When asked how his wife participates, Chin answered, “She gets involved by eating.”

A contest for mayor

W

hile most of our attention in Forest Park is focused on toting up “Yes” and “No” lawn signs related to the almost-over battle for and against video gaming, we urge you today to raise your eyes from the lawns and to the skies. There, the Review reports today, a contested election for mayor of Forest Park is taking shape for April.

And, we would suggest that, even as deserved vitriol is spewed over video gaming in anticipation of Nov. 6, the race for mayor and village council is the real McCoy. This April’s village government election will tell us more about this community’s plans for its own future than any decision on gaming.

Certainly, the two are related. The bruising, multi-year slugfest between bar owners and frustrated activists reflects a lack of leadership in the mayor’s office in handling this issue originally. Or doing anything to limit the bitter split in the community since. Forest Park has devolved into factions without trust. And that is the definition of failed leadership.

But the future of Forest Park is much broader than whether gaming survives or is quashed. The big issues ahead of this town are diversity and inclusion, optimism and planning, innovation and strategy.

We are glad to see that Rory Hoskins, a longtime villager and former village council member, has decided to run for mayor. Hoskins is smart, deeply rooted, and active in town, political enough to be smart, smart enough to know he’s running for mayor of a small town.

We actively want to see a slate of council candidates grow up around Hoskins. We have seen in the past few incarnations of the Anthony Calderone era that Forest Park needs a deeper bench than one man as mayor. We need a council that brings actual talent and skills, that raises questions and debates issues, that is race and gender diverse.

And we hope that other mayoral and council candidates come forward. We anticipate that Calderone will run for yet another term. We’d advise him not to, but our advice has not been welcomed in this century. Calderone has eked out re-election in his last two go-rounds. It won’t be easier after the gaming debacle and with an energized, progressive and organized opposition, potentially led by a person as levelheaded and well-liked as Rory Hoskins.

Let’s vote on video gaming and then let’s focus on the real prize.

Generational change

This might make three straight weeks that the Review has reported about a popular local business going on the market.

Previously we noted that Starship Subs and Jimmy’s Place are available to the right buyer. This week we report that Ed’s Way, our independent local grocer, would be open to a buyer.

Sure, this might say something about the state of retail and dining in the world and/or in Forest Park. More likely these are stories about generational change and the demands of long hours on aging bodies. We’re hopeful that new buyers will arrive.

We can also offer up a hefty list of newly-opened or soonto-open entrepreneurial dreams, including Cactus Grill, EPYK clothing, Takara, Mexican Republic, Studio 8, Tacabron, Soleful Massage, Harvest 365, Seva Beauty, Modern Electric, Living Fresh Market and Small Batch Barbecue.

There’s probably more we’re missing.

Everything changes.

OPINION Trials and tribulations of buying a new suit

T

wenty-six years ago when I graduated OPRF, for the graduation ceremony they required a dark suit, white shirt, and red tie for the boys and white dresses for the girls. The absurd and offensive symbolism of both of those moves aside, this meant I had to get a suit. I had jackets and ties, which I like, but I owned no suit because both then and now I like style but dislike uniforms.

But get a suit I did: medium grey, light pinstripe, and cheap as possible without buying it out of the trunk of a car. It came out occasionally in the years thereafter, mostly at Halloween, and was eventually wholly lost to the mists of time. I hope whoever found it at Goodwill got some use out of it, maybe as a dishrag or a costume for a dog.

As the four-year contract that is my day job hits the three-quarter mark, I’ve started to think about what I’m going to do next. It’s been a while since I job-hunted in earnest, and I’ve spent some of that interim time doing stuff like learning to eat and exercise like an adult and getting in better shape and watching my beard turn gray and moving firmly into the mid-career phase of life. I am now too old to think of other people as “grownups,” plus I don’t particularly like working, but I enjoy money, plus my old suit and three sport coats no longer fit, so: It is time to buy some suits.

Generally I dislike buying new clothes. I’ve never understood why clothes cost what some of them do, the return on my investment for dressing up is generally low — lot of backhanded, passive-aggressive comments like “You clean up nice!” — and, with the sole exception of David Letterman, I never knew anyone who both enjoyed wearing a suit and was a force for good in my life.

The problem with this need is that it has been 26 years since I bought a suit, and the Sears on North Av-

enue has closed. (Sidebar: What are they going to do with that space? There aren’t nearly enough windows for lofts and you can’t put a Whole Foods or a Mariano’s in without a gutrehab level modification, plus no corporation in their collective right mind is building something that size in Chicago when they could play the three villages across the street against one another in a tax-credit bonanza.

Good luck, y’all.) Without that Sears, I’ve lost my suit-buying north star, my fallback fail-safe.

I am assured by reputable sources (Google) that there are really only two color choices for the interview suit of an adult: blue and dark gray. This is garbage for several reasons. One is that two prime choices is a holdover from the days when sallow Europeans declared everything they had the Permanent World Standard of Good Taste — which I resent on behalf of a solid 75 percent of the rest of the world — and two, neither of those is a good color for me.

Light colors look good on me. Dark colors, save black, do not. I made a few inquiries and it turns out the darkest gray is black to everyone in America who isn’t a suit salesman, so we’ve escaped disaster there.

Still, why aren’t teal and purple and canary yellow the best colors for a suit? I look good in those colors, even if I also look like I have an unhealthy fandom relationship with Prince or maybe Dick Tracy. I look great in houndstooth, brown corduroy, black leather, and white linen. All good for jackets, all bad for suits. I could pull off colors. But alas, a bunch of pasty people who never saw the sun picked the “classiest” colors 400 years ago so now I have to drop a bunch of money on either a suit that looks like a sad cloud or a suit that’s an emblem away from a prep school uniform.

Anyhow, I’m going to look at suits this week, so assume you’ll hear more about this next month. Have a kind thought for the person of sales who has to field my questions. She’s going to need all the love and support she can get.

We have all noticed the slogan from the Pro-Gambling group, “Let Forest Park Grow”. Their slogan implies growth in the village will be suppressed by “Voting to Prohibit.” Ironically, the only suppression done the last few years was by the gambling proponents and their allies on the village council and Election Board who chose to suppress your right to vote. “Voting YES to prohibit Gambling” is not about stifling growth. It is a vote to take back Forest Park

from the few who want to exploit us. It is a vote that will remind the village administration how upset we are over their choice to ignore the will of the voters and force video gambling on the town. It is a vote to end the funneling of money out of this town through regressive taxation. It is a vote to grow the charm and family-oriented community we hold so dear.

We have yet to see any substantial growth for our village as a result of gambling. Our

village fees have only increased. Some businesses that hosted these machines have shuttered or are silently listed for sale. VG only benefits a handful of bar owners. For every dollar gambled and lost, the bars and machine operators pocket 70 cents while the village brings in one nickel. What they call growth is really a scheme for easy money meant to bailout their faltering business on the backs of our neighbors.

So why do we need gambling to grow?

Simply, we don’t. What we need is to reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit. This village has a great opportunity to reinvent itself. Let’s embrace new businesses that can give an economic boon to Forest Park, and encourage struggling businesses to change with the times. Why dive into an oversaturated gambling market instead of looking towards other sectors of the economy? Acquiring innovative businesses to set Forest Park apart from surrounding cities is what will drive an influx of visitors, jobs, and revenue in to our town, not out. We need to build momentum for future growth rather than rely on quick profits that come with considerable social costs, and no guarantees for future success.

Forest Park is changing and that scares some people clinging to a bygone era, desperately preying on your fears of an underfunded Village and empty storefronts.

They argue that our economy is still driven by bars that can only stay competitive in a free market by relying on gambling. They convinced our local government to over-ride the will of the public and force gambling on a skeptical town. Is this village a democracy or just another example of Chicago’s old school crony capitalism at work? Bar owners claim they are having a hard time, but seem to have an endless supply of cash to fight your right to vote all the way to the Supreme Court of Illinois. Thankfully, over 3000 residents said, “ENOUGH” by signing the petition that gives all of us a chance to vote on this issue, and some even chipped in for the lawyer needed to fight and secure our right to vote. This November, let’s focus our energy back to the growth of our village

I stand by my reporting on PMSA

For a brief moment during a Sept. 18 regular meeting of the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board, the local newspapers became the topic of discussion. The subject was our handling of the facilities master plan process that has been going on at the district for a year now.

I (representing Village Free Press) and my colleagues at Forest Park Review have reported on the process from the beginning (before the school board hired Perkins and Will to help draft the plan) until that Sept.

18 meeting, when representatives from the architectural firm, school board members and Supt. Jesse Rodriguez seemed to cast an important part of our coverage in a cloud of suspicion.

“The newspaper stated that PMSA was going to close,” Rodriguez said. “And then they stated that PMSA is not going to close. They’re utilizing information that they receive in the board meeting in a way that they understand it, but what they and the public should know is that no decision has been made.”

Mark Jolicoeur, an architect with Perkins and Will, said that the architectural firm “in no way, shape or form” makes any final decision on the master plan. That’s the board’s role.

“We cannot control what a writer puts in a newspaper and publishes,” Jolicoeur said, adding that he doesn’t have the ability to make Village Free Press and Forest Park Review retract the information in the articles that I wrote (and I’ve written all of the articles relevant to that Sept. 18 board discussion).

I admire and respect every member on the current school board, as well as Supt.

Rodriguez. I also think Perkins and Will is doing a fine job handling this master facilities planning process and have done a great job handling a similar long-term capital planning process in a nearby high school district that I also cover.

But I have to push back against the perception of our coverage that seems to have taken root among a critical mass of D209 officials and the district’s outside architect.

At no point have I reported that PMSA will or will not close. At no point have I reported the preliminary plans so far drafted as part of the facilities master plan as if they were final plans approved by the board. At no point have I suggested in my reporting that the architects have, as Jolicoeur claims, made any final decisions regarding the master plan.

In fact, the last sentence of the very first article that I wrote about this matter — entitled “D209 could dissolve PMSA campus” in Forest Park Review and “Architects, Public Ponder Merging PMSA Campus With East And/Or West” in Village Free Press —is this: “[Jolicoeur] said that the

firm [Perkins and Will] will have a draft facilities master plan completed by May to present to the board in June.”

Higher up in that article is this: “For the first time in the master facilities planning process, the architects offered a series of very preliminary options for dealing with the district’s facilities burden and most of them centered on what to do with PMSA.” The architects presented “very preliminary” concepts (based, in part, on public input and an evaluation of the district’s financial realties and capital needs) that introduced the possibility of D209 dissolving PMSA’s campus (hence the headline in Forest Park Review, which may be blunt or worded for effect, but it’s not wrong).

After many PMSA families lodged a strong opposition against even considering the possibility of dissolving the school’s one-building campus (which they thought tantamount to closing the school itself), the architects did what they were hired by the board to do — they modified their preliminary plans, concepts and scenarios in order to take into account that particular strain of community feedback.

The preliminary plan now takes into account all three campuses. The architects, steering team and building leadership teams are no longer even flirting with the idea of dissolving PMSA’s campus. Indeed, D209 board members came to a consensus at a meeting on Sept. 18 that all three campuses will remain intact (they did not, however, formally vote on the matter).

The architects are still working with district officials and community members to draft a plan that they hope reflects the district’s and the wider community’s needs, priorities and values. District officials are currently refining funding scenarios related to the master plan. There’s more community feedback to come in October. The board could vote on a final master facilities plan sometime before the year is out.

That’s what has happened. That’s where this process is at. That’s what I’ve reported.

And, so far, no one at Perkins and Will, and no one at the district has offered up any information that substantially refutes my reporting. Besides, my reporting is based on information that they themselves have provided to the public.

I urge everyone to read our coverage critically and thoroughly. If we haven’t reported on something accurately, please let us know in detail and, if you’re right, we’ll issue a correction. But for elected officials and well-respected professionals to perpetuate what I’m confident is a gross misreading of my work is just plain wrong.

Just how level is this playing field?

As the issue of video gambling at Forest Park bars gained traction in 2013, bar owners started whining about having a “level playing field” to compete with our neighbors in Berwyn and North Riverside.

Neighbors? Huh. This got me thinking who are the “actual” neighbors of these gambling bar/parlors?

Lets look at Madison St., there is a hardware store, clothing stores, hair salons, an ice cream parlor, antique stores and other great businesses. Don’t these neighbors deserve a “level playing field” too? During 2017, O’Sullivan’s took in about $64,000 just for having gambling. Duffy’s got $60,000 during the same period. If I were the owner of a salon or ice cream parlor, I’d be

thinking, ‘Damn! That’s a huge chunk of my payroll, why do the bars benefit from this government handout and not me!’ No, the playing field isn’t level for them at all.

Human nature being what it is, it will get worse. When the video gambling lights and signs and banners start to appear, the tidy storefronts like the hardware store and the paint store will be cloaked with the seedy bombast of their neighbors neon glare. This is classic real estate regression.

As you enter the voting booth, think about ALL of our Madison St. neighbors. Vote Yes to prohibit video gambling.

Forest Park is not overrun by denizens of the Underworld I have been observing the ongoing saga surrounding video gaming in Forest Park for the past several months and this is what I have found: Since allowing gaming machines, I have seen no discernable difference in our Village. Despite some people’s claims that allowing a few machines in restaurants and bars would lead to Forest Park being overrun by denizens of the Underworld, no such thing has happened.

Unlike some of our surrounding villages, Forest Park doesn’t allow outside gaming signage so there is no risk of turning into a “mini-Vegas.” The local business owners have also pledged that they wouldn’t put up such signs even if there was no ordinance against them.

Gaming brings in much-needed revenue

to the Village, which is a big benefit for allowing a few machines that I barely even notice. Despite the fact that allowing gaming has been a net-positive thing for the Village, there are a small but very vocal group of people who are dead set against it. Their reason often boils down to “I just don’t like it.”

I don’t believe it is right for anyone to foist their personal moral code on others.

If you don’t like gaming then don’t play.

Many responsible adults who can make their own decisions do enjoy gaming and they don’t need a self-righteous lecture.

Let it Be. Vote No on Prohibition.

Fabbrini has excelled at Fenwick, Illinois and now with Team USA hockey

Nick Fabbrini’s hockey journey will take him to Krasnoyarsk, Russia as an assistant coach of the U.S. Men’s National University Team at the Winter World University Games (March 2-12).

Previously, he served as an assistant on the same team at the same event, only in Kazakhstan. You know, the country made quasi-famous by the 2006 film, Borat.

A lesser-known fact about Fabbrini is that his love of sports began on the Garfield School playground in Forest Park.

“I grew up playing all kinds of sports at the Garfield School playground,” said Fabbrini, a Forest Park native.

“All the kids in the neighborhood got together. Depending on the season and what the weather allowed, we played baseball, football, soccer and roller hockey.”

Roller hockey sowed the seeds of love for ice hockey, aided by a pair of buddies down the street.

“I was really lucky that a couple of kids down the block, Matt and Tom Montes, were into hockey,” Fabbrini said.

“Matt played Division I hockey and both of them really knew the sport. I fell in love with it. I started watching hockey on TV and reading books about it. I quickly became a hockey junkie.”

A few years later, Fabbrini’s addiction worked to Fenwick High School hockey’s benefit. After stints playing in the Franklin Park house league and for club teams like the Addison Grizzlies and Chicago Blues, Fabbrini joined the Friars his junior year in high school.

Playing alongside center John Glancy and right-winger Mike Janda, Fabbrini flourished as a forward on one of the greatest lines in the history of Illinois High School hockey.

Goalie Trevor Heffernan and all-state defenseman Chris Meegan and Eddie Mazur ensured comparable excellence at the other end of the rink.

Coached by Dave Cromer and his assistant, Mike Breslin, Fenwick won back-to-back state championships and Kennedy Cup titles during Fabbrini’s upperclassmen years.

“I was really fortunate to play on such great teams,” he said. “I actually played baseball and soccer at Fenwick as well. Having such a rich sports history was definitely a factor in my decision to go there.

“Being a student-athlete there was a big part of why I enjoyed it so much,” Fabbrini said. “I also think students at Fenwick are typically there because they want to get the most out of their education.”

With a strong academic and athletic background in place, Fabbrini considered junior hockey or college as his next move.

After much consideration, Fabbrini decided on the University of Illinois. During his time in Champaign-Urbana (2004-2008), Fabbrini had 74 goals and 58 assists for 132 points in 141 games played. The Illini won American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championships in 2006 and 2008.

“It really worked out great for me to be honest,” Fabbrini said about attending Illinois. “Like Fenwick, I was really fortunate to play with a lot of really good players. Those guys had won a lot before coming to Illinois.”

After assistant coaching stints with Fenwick and the Chicago Hawks, Fabbrini worked as a graduate assistant in the hockey program at Illinois during the 2008-09 season.

A few years later, he was named head coach of his alma mater. Entering his sixth season on the bench this fall, he has guided the Illini to a 142-87-9 record and the 2013 CSCHL regular-season championship.

“Hockey is such a great game,” Fabbrini said. “The sport has done a lot for me. Having the opportunity to give to the younger generation of hockey players is rewarding. It’s great to see kids grow as players and people.”

Now Fabbrini, 32, is excited about the aforementioned opportunity to coach Team USA in Russia.

“The Winter World University Games is sort of like a mini-Winter Olympics for college students,” Fabbrini said.

“We send the best players from the ACHA whereas most other countries send current or former pro players.

“Anytime you get to represent your country in an international setting, it’s special,” he added. “I’m looking forward to working with and learning from head coach Roger Grillo.

Hopefully, I can help this team bring home a medal.”
