Fire in the pouring rain displaces three families

Building owner says he will rebuild the three-flat By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

An early morning fire, Oct. 14, left a three-unit apartment building at 1124 Marengo Ave. uninhabitable and displaced two families, but no injuries or fatalities were reported. Fire Chief Bob McDermott said the fire apparently started in the top floor apartment around 1:30 a.m. When fire

crews arrived, flames were showing in all windows on the top floor, he added. Forest Park firefighters were assisted by firefighters from North Riverside, Oak Park, and River Forest, which are Forest Park’s usual mutual aid respondents, as well as firefighters from Berwyn, Cicero and Maywood. McDermott said firefighters were on the scene in the pouring rain See EARLY MORNING FIRE on page 3

Pillars come in all shapes and sizes

W

e lost another pillar of our community on Sept. 23. Not a person who dedicated their life to Forest Park. No, this is one of the polished granite pillars that stood at the entrance to Greenberg Road, off Desplaines Avenue. Right after Rosh Hashanah ended, the south pillar fell with such force, it cracked the roadway. A maintenance worker for Jewish Waldheim Cemetery reported it to the director, David Penzell. He immediately contracted with Bevel Granite Co. to have the pillar transported to a safe place. David inspected the site and saw there was no metal pin securing the 12,500-pound pillar to its pedestal. “It was just good old gravity holding it in place.” He speculated that a westbound vehicle may have brushed against it, because there was a paint transfer on the surface. David doesn’t see the damage as a costly setback for the cemetery but a chance to improve visibility at the intersection. The north pillar was still standing but David had it removed for safety reasons. “God forbid it should fall on someone.” He’s going to have Bevel drill holes and insert stainless steel bolts, so they can be remounted more securely. He plans to re-position them to improve the sight lines for motorists. The pillars have served as the gateway to Greenberg Road for countless years.

This used to be a private road, owned by the cemetery, until it was transferred to the village. It was named for an accountant named Alex Greenberg, who was an associate of the Capone mob. He became the prominent owner of Canadian Ace Brewery after Capone transferred the company to him. Not only is the road named for him, there is an Alex Greenberg Chapel, just north of the road. The distinctive feature of the pillars is that they are broken off at the top. David said that stone tree trunks broken this way are cemetery symbols for a life that was cut too short. But he’s never seen a pillar symbolizing this. He surmised that, due to the damage, “They may have gotten a good deal on them.” There are engravings on the pillars listing the congregations and the prominent citizens buried there, including a Chicago alderman. The pillars also hold a prominent place in my memory. Growing up in Brookfield, the broken pillars would grab my attention, as we drove past. I was less than 6 years old and they were landmarks that told me we were heading to see our relatives in River Forest, or better yet, the Forest Park Pool. “They have a special historic significance,” David said. “That is where they belong.” Besides these granite pillars, David told me about a flesh-and-blood pillar the cemetery recently lost. EARLY MORNING FIRE Plan to rebuild from page 1 until almost 5 a.m. Forest Park police were on the scene first and helped residents in the top floor and the basement apartments escape unharmed. The main floor apartment was unoccupied while building owner Eric Jensen did remodeling. Police also evacuated residents of neighboring homes. Crystal Lewis, who lives in the basement apartment, said she was able to escape with her son, her boyfriend, and their two dogs. She said the top floor tenant, Jackie Quinones, and her three teenage sons also escaped unharmed. “It was all pure luck,” Lewis said. “I just happened to wake up and heard a smoke detector going off. “By the time we got out, the whole third floor was on fire and all the windows were blown out.” Lewis said Quinones and her oldest son were not in the apartment but nearby when the fire broke out. He was highly respected in the industry, an innovator, a man of his word.” Shortly before his death in July, David was arguing with Irwin in the ICU about the cemetery’s insurance. intact but could not speculate whether the building would have to come down. Jensen said he plans to rebuild the structure, which was built in 1907. “Nobody got hurt and we’re all safe,” he said. “We’ll survive.” Tracey Diederich, a neighbor, has set up a GoFundMe page, https://www.gofundme. com/ForestParkFire101317, to collect donations for the residents. She also has set up a fund at Forest Park National Bank and has arranged with Marty Sorice, owner of Carole’s Next Best Thing, 7307 Roosevelt Road, for donations of toiletries and clothing to be dropped off there. The GoFundMe page goal is $4,000 — $2,000 for each family, Diederich said. As of Monday, over $1,700 had been raised. Diederich, who recently moved into Forest Park, said she started the fund even though she didn’t really know her neighbors. “They’ve got enough on their plates right now,” she explained. “I didn’t see anybody doing anything, so I had to pick up the torch and carry it.” McDermott said one North Riverside firefighter suffered a twisted ankle but was treated at the scene and did not need hospitalization. The fire was the third this month for the department and its new engine, which McDermott said “worked very well.”

Novels that serve as artistic guides to historic Chicago Forest Park’s Allium Press has carved out a unique niche By NONNA WORKING Contributing Reporter

“W

hew! That was close,” Louis whispers in Joan Bard-Collins’ historical “Let me show you what I found.” The famous Chicago architect Louis Sullivan has nearly been caught sneaking into the city hall records office on LaSalle Street to help his friend, a former Pinkerton detective, solve a crime. Sullivan as sleuth? Why not? Through her hero, the author reveals her passion for Chicago’s architectural history in her captivating detective novel, Honor Above All, published by Forest Park-based Allium Press of Chicago. Sullivan is an appealing character, despite his gambling habits and bad temper. At the same time, he is a literary lens through which Bard-Collins, an Oak Park resident, explores a little-known power struggle over the construction of the city’s first skyscrapers. For a Chicago history lover, it’s fun to read the book and tour the sites of the events by following a map provided by the author. In this unorthodox way, readers learn more than in a basic architectural tour. “Rescuing Chicago from Capone … one book at a time,” is the mission of Emily Victorson, the publisher of Allium Press. In her goal “to illuminate the rich tapestry of Chicago’s history,” Victorson has created a new literary wave of historical fiction set in Chicago.

HISTORICAL FICTION: Emily Victorson, co-founder and publisher of Allium Press of Chicago, in her home office in Forest Park. “What really resonates with me in novels — either that I enjoy reading or that I am interested in publishing — is a very strong sense of place and time,” Victorson explains on the publishing company’s web page. Allium tricoccum is the Latin name for the plant that gave both Chicago its name and the press its logo when Victorson launched her publishing house in 2009. A former librarian with the Chicago History Museum, she insists that the details in the historical novels she publishes be accurate. Allium also publishes contemporary mysteries and thrillers, as well as literary fiction, all with a Chicago connection. After soda tax canned, businesses hope sales return County commissioners vote 15-1 in favor of repeal, effective Dec. 1 By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted 15 to 1 on Oct. 11 to repeal the deeply unpopular sweetened beverage tax, which tacked on an additional penny per ounce onto certain soft drinks. The rollback goes into effect on Dec. 1. The tax was designed to help fill a $1.8 billion hole in the county’s budget. The office of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle — who was the tiebreaking vote in favor of the tax back when it passed the board in November 2016 — estimated that the tax could generate $200 million a year in revenue. Preckwinkle, and other supporters of the tax, also argued that the measure could be a boon to the health of county residents by discouraging the consumption of drinks that have are correlated with obesity and other health problems. On Oct. 10, after she realized that there were enough votes to overwhelmingly repeal the tax, Preck-

winkle issued a statement expressing her disappointment with the outcome. “As I outlined last week, it is up to the commissioners to choose our direction on revenue, and I respect their authority to do so,” she stated. “Now, together, we must chart a new course toward the eighth consecutive balanced budget of my tenure as board president.” In a joint statement issued the same day, the Illinois Public Health Institute and the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity decried the repeal measure as a “bad deal for county residents as taxpayers will continue to cover the rising costs of treating the chronic diseases caused by drinking too many sugary beverages while also seeing cuts to healthcare services for our most vulnerable communities.” But critics of the sweetened beverage tax described it as a regressive tax that would disproportionately affect lower income residents while hurting

county businesses. Mike Nutley, the owner of Ed’s Way Food Mart, 946 Beloit Ave. in Forest Park, said that his pop sales dropped by 20 percent, File photo dragging down total sales along with it. Nutley said he lost customers who, instead of paying the tax, would shop at stores in DuPage County. Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (1st), whose district includes Forest Park, expressed his approval for the repeal vote in a statement released on Oct. 11. Boykin, who voted against the tax last year, was among the most vocal supporters of repeal. “The people have spoken and I am glad that my colleagues listened to their voices by repealing this regressive tax that was bad for families and bad for the business community,” Boykin said.

en, Mary Stone and Ida Kahn, who came to America in 1886 to study medicine. The murder mystery is set in Chicago’s original Chinatown on South Clark Street. Chicago has inspired great literature ever since the Great Fire of 1871, when the city started rebuilding, inventing new architecture, and innovating in business. Theodore Dreiser, Saul Bellow, and Nelson Algren wrote world-famous books about newcomers to Chicago looking for their destiny. Unfortunately, many people today no longer know much about their work. Milestones such as the Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, which exposed the horrific work and sanitary conditions at the Union Stock Yards, are almost forgotten. The more popular literary genres, such as crime, mystery, and romance, are often looked down upon. But Allium Press aims to publish books with educational value, more sophisticated and artistic guides to historical Chicago. The Reason for Time, by Mary Burns, is written in the language and accents of the early 20th century. Burns, a former journalist, spotted surprising headlines in old newspapers while doing research — between July 21 and July 30, 1919 a series of shocking events took place in Chicago: a blimp crash in the Loop, a major race riot, a streetcar strike, and a child abduction. Added to that were soldiers returning from World War I and the beginning of the African American migration to the northern states. Burns transformed those events, as seen through the eyes of a young Irish-American working girl, into her novel. Maeve falls in love with a streetcar conductor and, when she learns from a newspaper that he was injured during the riot, she treks across town to find him. Unlike Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie, she is naïve and sincere, and her genuine love gets her in serious trouble. As the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917 approaches, interest is increasing in the origins of Chicago’s radicalism. One might wonder why Chicago never hosted a socialist revolution, despite being the epicenter of a powerful American labor movement. There is a good answer in the middle grade novel City of Grit and Gold by Maud Macrory Powell. The novel is set in a Jewish neighborhood of Chicago during the Haymarket Affair of 1886. Seen through the eyes of 12-year-old Addie, the book describes a conflict between her father, who detests unions, and her favorite Uncle Chaim, who is fighting for the eight-hour workday. The girl is attending the Haymarket rally when a bomb explodes and gunfire erupts, killing both policemen and workers. “The unions have been weakened,” Uncle Chaim explains. “People are turning against us because of the bomb thrown at the police, and they’re no longer willing to look at the real problem, which is the treatment of the workers. The riot’s been a great blow to our cause.” That book also provides a map of the neighborhood and Haymarket Square, a practical guide for historical tourists to visit. Victorson came to publishing via a circuitous career path. After she was laid off from her job as a historian and book designer during the recession of 2009, she made the risky decision to do what she really loves and found a small press. In the end, it’s hard to fight the ghosts of the Mafia. But, like the Untouchables, Victorson is laboring to reveal littleknown chapters of the past — and thereby rescue the city’s history from Al Capone. Allium’s newest title, which will be released on Dec. 12, is Tony Romano’s Where My Body Ends and the World Begins, a novel about a young man’s struggle with the psychological toll of being a survivor of the 1958 Our Lady of Angels School fire. All of Allium’s titles can be found at Forest Park’s own Centuries and Sleuths Bookstore, as well as at other bookstores and libraries, and on Amazon.

Fixer-upper on sale through county Land Bank Forest Park property is located at 1529 Marengo Ave. By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

A house in Forest Park is up for sale through a new initiative, called the Homebuyer Direct Program, launched by the Cook County Land Bank Authority this fall. The program has made available between 30 and 40 fixer-upper houses at below-market prices in certain areas of Cook County. The homes range from $50,000 to $170,000. “In launching this new program, the Land Bank Authority will play a transformative role in building strong and sustainable communities,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in a statement. Typically, the CCLBA sells the delinquent, vacant or abandoned properties it controls to developers. The new program, however, “lets CCLBA reach out directly to the homebuyers, who then can guide the development process (including the schedule, choice of contractors and aesthetic choices about the rehab) in accordance to their preference,” according to a statement released by Land Bank last month. The fixer-upper available through the Homebuyer Direct Program in Forest Park is located at 1529 Marengo Ave. According to Redfin, the four-bedroom, two-bathroom property, is priced at an estimated $178,000, which is the same as the Land Bank’s minimum offer price. A spokesperson with the CCLBA said she’s currently working on reaching out to CCLBA leadership for an explanation on that particular minimum offer price and for information about the condition of the home. According to an FAQ on the Land Bank’s website, the authority prices the homes “below the market value using comparable sales information from the Multiple Listing

Service. In the unlikely event that the home appraises for less than the offer price, the Land Bank will review the appraisal and consider an adjustment to the purchase price, if warranted.” Prospective homebuyers who are financing the purchase of the homes should have a preapproval letter from their lender. If they’re paying with cash, they should provide proof of funds. Interested homebuyers can offer less than the minimum offer price and there are no income restrictions. The Land Bank does require a $1,000 application fee, in the form of a certified check, which it applies as a credit at the close of purchase. The Land Bank works with a range of “lending partners” associated with the program and also offers to help identify qualified contractors who homebuyers may hire for rehab work, among other resources. According to Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer (10th), the Land Bank’s chairwoman, the direct buyer program “builds upon the Land Bank’s mission to reduce the number of vacant buildings by filling them with not just residents but homeowners, especially in communities hit hardest by the mortgage crisis.” Rob Rose, the Lab Bank’s executive director, said the program assists people who may have hopes of purchasing a fixerupper but may be intimidated “by logistical, financial or other obstacles.” “This program helps those prospective homebuyers and targets neighborhoods where the mortgage crisis stifled a lot of community potential,” Rose said in a statement. D209 blasts Aramark over spoiled milk Company says truck’s refrigerator failed after breakdown

By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

In July, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education begrudgingly approved a one-year, roughly $1.1 million contract with Aramark Education Services to feed district students who qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Three months later, district officials are still frustrated with the company despite some signs of progress. The board approved the contract, over widespread concern among students and district leadership about the quality of Aramark’s food and services. But, the district needed to hire a food vendor before the start of the school year and Aramark was the lowest of four bidders. With some exceptions, state law usually requires school districts to give contracts that are more than $25,000 to

guez, signed by the Class of 2010. “Attached is a snipet [sic] of current teacher Mr. Dan Pellegrini expressing his thoughts on the current removal of DACA,” the letter states, referencing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a policy implemented in 2012 by President Barack Obama and recently rescinded by President Donald Trump. The program offers a two-year period of relief from deportation that can be renewed, in addition to the opportunity to obtain a work permit, to people who immigrated to the United States illegally as minors. DACA recipients are often referred to as “Dreamers.” Aguirre also posted to Facebook a screenshot of the original comment that was posted on Facebook by Pellegrini and written in response to another comment. “Pells I normally agree with you but a lot of pmsa kids are dreamers,” wrote a Facebook user whose account name is blacked out. “I can’t stand to watch them not have a future here. They didn’t have a voice in their parents decision to bring them [sic].” “That’s too bad,” Pellegrini wrote in response. “They should go back.” Pellegrini’s comments were written around the same time that the school district sent out a letter to families expressing the district’s support of DACA students who may attend district schools, and providing information about the program. Pellegrini has since taken down his Facebook page. Last month, a PMSA student started a change.org petition urging the school board not to fire Pellegrini. ing to you that this was unacceptable. … It seems that maybe Aramark did not take us seriously and sent us spoiled milk again.” Joe Brown, the district’s food services director for Aramark, admitted that spoiled milk that Aramark had received sometime in August ended up getting passed on to students. He said that the problem, however, originated not with the product but somewhere in the chain of delivery. He said that Aramark did not take the temperature of milk coming into district buildings, so workers likely missed the fact that cartons had spoiled during delivery. Brown said that Aramark purchases Prairie Farms milk, which is delivered by a company called Clover Leaf. “We were told that there was a truck that broke down and so the cooling mechanism on the truck didn’t maintain proper temperatures and it brought us a couple of deliveries before [workers] found out [about the spoiled milk],” Brown said, adding that the expiration date on the milk was marked for mid-September. Brown said that when he found out about the spoiled milk, he “immediately came over and handled” the issue, sending back around 1,600 cartons. Although Aramark

typically takes the temperature of food and drinks that come into district buildings, he said, workers did not test the temperature of the spoiled milk that Alexander had brought up. “We did not initially inspect those,” Brown said, before adding that workers tested the temperature for all other subsequent deliveries of milk and have not had any recurring issues with the quality of milk since then. Todd Drafall, D209’s chief financial officer, said that district officials met with Aramark representatives in September. He said that Aramark’s management team also meets regularly with building principals each month. When the school board approved Aramark’s contract back in July, Forest Park Review reported that student participation in the free lunch and breakfast program had around 50 percent. The district first started participating in the federal Community Eligibility Provision program, which reimburses school districts in low-income areas for the cost of meals, in 2015. The district has contracted with Aramark for food services for the last seven years. “High standards start here,” said D209 Superintendent Jesse Rodriguez on Oct. 10. “The company has been directed to produce work at a very, very high level. Although there have been some significant changes, improvements, there’s still work that needs to be done.”

do their best,” Kelly said during an interview on Thursday. “I also believe all children should be safe and that all employees should have due process and be treated fairly under the law.” In a follow-up interview, Kelly clarified that she was not referring to her specific vote or the board’s decision regarding Pellegrini, adding that she cannot address matters of personnel. On Saturday, school board secretary Claudia Medina said that the board and district “followed complete due process” while deciding how to address the issue with Pellegrini. “We were sensitive and cognizant of the strife that [Pellegrini’s] actions caused students and parents in the community, many of whom came forward to complain to us. This issue was addressed based upon substantial disruption to the education environment,” Medina said. “It wasn’t based on the Facebook post. “The district takes step to make sure that no one’s civil rights are violated in personnel matters. We are completely sensitive to all of our parents, students and teachers,” she said. “As a district, we engage in transparency and accountability, following due process at all times.” During an interview on Sept. 12, the teacher, Dan Pellegrini, confirmed that he had posted the comment before apologizing and reversing his initial position. The uproar over Pellegrini’s comment was sparked on Sept. 8, when Lynette Aguirre, who graduated from PMSA in 2010, posted to Facebook a screenshot of a letter addressed to District 209 administrators, including Superintendent Jesse Rodri-

the lowest bidder. But awarding Aramark the lucrative food services contract didn’t stop some district officials from criticizing what they considered to be Aramark’s poor quality. Proviso East Principal Patrick Hardy said in July that he had photographic evidence of Aramark serving spoiled milk and burnt pizza, according to a Forest Park Review report. “I have zero confidence in this company,” Hardy said at the time. “I want to say that I am sad that they’re here. This is one of the most frustrating moments I’ve had in my time here.” During their Oct. 10 meeting, school board members zeroed in on yet another instance of students receiving spoiled milk this school year. “We had this conversation when we gave you [a million-dollar contract] for spoiled milk before,” said school board member Rodney Alexander. “We were clear in stat-

The biggest story of 2007, though, was the mayoral election. Patrick Doolin and Theresa Steinbach challenged incumbent Anthony Calderone in a primary.

2007. District 209 continued the purge by suspending Superintendent Stan Fields after just 12 months on the job. A month later, Fields quit. There was also upheaval in the private schools. St John Lutheran School was slated to close, due to declining enrollment. Fortunately, Walther Lutheran High School stepped in to continue the school as Walther Lutheran Academy. The Review reported on all of this, with John Rice replacing Bill Lichtenberg as the weekly columnist. Tom Holmes and Jackie Schulz continued as columnists. Dr. Murray was still analyzing the handwriting of readers, including one who signed off as “A boy named Sue.” Bill Dwyer and Andrea Blaylock and Bob Sullivan also contributed on a regular basis. There was a celebrity sighting when Rev. Jesse Jackson addressed students at Proviso East High School. But the village’s big star of 2007 was a local mechanic named Robert Lang, who saved the lives of two other mountaineers, when he was scaling Mount McKinley! He was recognized for his heroism on the country’s highest peak by officials of Denali National Park. And that concludes our tour of Forest Park history through the “7s.” The first issue of the Forest Park Review came out on Oct. 17, 1917. We’re now 100 years old. Worth celebrating.

PROVISO EAST FOOTBALL

Proviso East Versus Willowbrook 10/13/17 Proviso East (0-8) went on the road to face West Suburban Gold rival Willowbrook (7-1) only to rere alize that they indeed had a long journey ahead of them on the road to conference competicompeti tiveness. The Pirates had no answer for Willowbrook running backs Jack Jesson and Chris Diaz who combined for 299 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. On offense East was completely stymied by the Warriors swarming defense and were only able to score a couple of touchdowns after the WarWar riors took their collective foot off the gas pedal. The final score was 57-12. Proviso East plays their final home game of the season this coming Saturday October 21 against the Blazers of Addison Trail.

A fire that damaged a two-unit building in the 200 block of Circle Avenue on the afternoon of Oct. 8 likely was started by a toaster oven inside a pantry in the second-floor unit, according to emergency officials. Firefighters responded to 213 Circle Ave. about 4:55 p.m. and observed smoke engulfing the back porch of the second floor. An elderly woman who lived in the second-floor unit exited through the front door and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames. The first-floor tenant was not home at the time of the fire, according to police. According to the police report, the secondfloor tenant may have tried to push an object, possibly the toaster oven, out the door after it caught fire, but that it went “whoosh,” indicating the fire grew out of control.

Burglary ■■A resident of the 800 block of Hannah Avenue called police on Oct. 7 to report her home had been burglarized between 6 and 8 p.m. Entry appeared to be through a cut screen on the south side of the home. Several rooms were ransacked and several items taken, including three guitars, jewelry, an Xbox game system and a laptop computer. ■■Police responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Troost Avenue on Oct. 15 at 9 p.m. after a resident called to report that someone broke into her home between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. According to police, the homeowner said the doors to the residence had been left unlocked and entry was gained through a sliding patio door. An upstairs bedroom appeared to be ransacked. A child’s book bag had been emptied onto the floor and the book bag was missing, as were electronics, jewelry and other personal items. Police also recovered a large glass jar and coins spilled all over the curb outside the residence. The jar had been taken from an office inside the home. ■■A supervisor at McAdam Landscaping, 2001 Desplaines Ave., called police on the afternoon of Oct. 10 to report that one of the business’ trailers had been broken into. Several items were taken. The trailer hadn’t been used for four days, and it appeared the lock had been cut to gain entry. Among the missing items were a Stihl line trimmer, a Redmax line trimmer, a Stihl hedge trimmer and a Redmax backpack leaf blower. The loss was estimated at more than $1,500. ■■Two Chicago men, ages 18 and 23, were arrested by River Forest police on Oct. 8 about 4:15 a.m. at the intersection of Lake and Forest avenues after officers found documents and items on the two tying them to a

vehicle break-in in the 7700 block of Adams Street in Forest Park. Police found two vehicles on that block which had been ransacked; neither was locked. Some of the proceeds on the two men were also tied to a garage burglary in River Forest, according to police.

Unwanted advance Forest Park police charged a 26-year-old Chicago man with battery after he allegedly snuck up behind a 19-year-old Forest Park woman while she was walking eastbound on Madison Street at Ferdinand Avenue, grabbed her by the hips and thrust his pelvis into her buttocks. The man ran away through the McDonald’s parking lot, through the restaurant and then southbound on Desplaines Avenue. Police located him on the CTA Blue Line platform at 711 Desplaines Ave. and arrested him.

Criminal trespassing A 35-year-old Bensenville man faces criminal trespassing charges after he was found sleeping inside a stolen vehicle in the 900 block of Circle Avenue on Oct. 14 about 9:05 a.m., police reported. The 2002 Ford Explorer had been reported stolen out of Chicago on Oct. 1 and the rear license plate had been changed, police said. The man in the vehicle said he’d gotten a ride to the block, where a friend lived. However, the friend wasn’t home, the man reportedly told them, so he got in the car to stay out of the rain.

Disorderly conduct The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office declined to charge a 67-year-old Chicago man with attempted robbery, settling for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, after he reportedly ordered a 52-year-old woman who was walking in the 1000 block of Desplaines Avenue on Oct. 15 about 6:30 p.m. to “Give me all your money!” The woman reportedly responded by telling the man to leave her alone, and he eventually turned around and walked away. Police stopped him on Roosevelt Road, where he was walking westbound. According to police, the man appeared to be mentally unstable. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Oct. 7-15, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

OPINION O U R

V I E W

A Forest Park century

O

ne hundred years ago this week the very first issue of the Forest Park Review was published. Think about that. From the waning years of World War I to, if you believe Sen. Bob Corker, the precipice of World War III, Forest Park has had its very own community newspaper. Every week. That’s 5,200 weeks of continuous publication. And by our reckoning, those 100 years have been split fairly evenly among just four owners. Albert Hall, Claude Walker, Bob Haeger, and for the past 30 years, Wednesday Journal Inc., the little newspaper company from next door. You would be extremely hard pressed to find another suburban Chicago town that has this history. Across our community news industry, small-town papers have been purchased, merged, closed, chewed up and spit out far more often than they have celebrated a century of independent ownership and progressive, editorial independence. Hometown newspapers don’t survive and prosper without a good and welcoming hometown to cover. The Review works because Forest Park is an interesting and vital town to write about, to editorialize about, to celebrate and to nudge. Forest Park is wonderful and it is imperfect. And it has a local newspaper that matches up exactly. Too many people for the Review to thank, but here are a select few: Thanks to the late Bob Haeger, our predecessor as owner and publisher, who saw something in the stillyoung Wednesday Journal that gave him the confidence to sell his precious Review to us. As we turned the paper toward more traditional newsgathering, added a local editorial page, and canned the psychic’s column, we know Bob took some heat. Not that he ever told us about it. And to Laurie Kokenes, Bob’s daughter and partner and our colleague in those first years, well, we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks to the legion of Forest Park favorites who stuck with us in those first years. Jackie Schulz, Jim Murray, and Sam Zussman truly made the Review, “The Paper with the Personal Touch.” And in more recent years as the Review has had some great editors and some spectacular flameouts, the constant local connection has been provided by John Rice, Tom Holmes, Ken Trainor and Jill Wagner. A new century beckons. More change for certain (hopefully not World War III) but always the need for connected, verifiable news of the town where you choose to live your life. Our thanks to our readers and to our advertisers who make this work.

100 years of ‘the personal touch’

ne hundred years ago this week, the first Forest Park Review was published. The Review office was located at 7444 Madison, now Scratch Kitchen and Deli. The new publisher, Albert L. Hall and associate editor Mrs. Edith Heilmann took over the Proviso Weekly and The Forest Park, the precursors to the Review. In those early days of Forest Park, there were other news sources available — The Forest Leaves plus German newspapers. It was the friendliness of the community and the support of businesses that enabled Albert Hall to start here, and after 100 years, the Forest Park Review has been published weekly for 5,200 consecutive weeks. The four-page newspaper cost $1 for an annual subscription which, when adjusted to today’s rates would be $20.24 a year. Within two years, the annual subscription rate went up to $1.50 for a short time, until the Depression forced the rates — and the paper size — down. The inaugural issue covered the village council meeting, which passed a Vegetable Law (vendors would have to weigh vegetables on a scale to price them). The paper mentioned the Forest Park Amusement Park, gave updates from the war in Germany, covered a request for illumination on the north side of Madison Street between Burkhardt Court and Circle, and noted three men, two from River Forest and one from Maywood who were arrested in Forest Park and indicted on a “serious charge.” Over the next 100 years the Forest Park Review would have different publishers and editors, starting with Albert L. Hall, followed by Claude Walker, Larry Kaercher, Bob Haeger and Dan Haley. Community features have included Personal Observations, Meet Your Forest Park Policeman, New Neighbors Club, From the Pages (a decade by decade look back on the news) compiled by Nancy Purcell and later Bob Sullivan, Dr. James Murray’s Your Writing Says, Sam Zussman’s Sports Shots, reporting by Judy Baar Topinka, and for over 45 years, Jackie Schulz’s Talk of the Town.

Pancake thanks This past weekend the Forest Park Cub Scouts Pack 109 and Forest Park Firefighers Union 2753 partnered for a community Pancake Breakfast. Just hours earlier, the Firefighters managed an overnight fire on the same block of one of our Cub Scout families. Despite the long night, our Forest Park firefighters flipped pancakes and

fed our friends and neighbors on that rainy Saturday morning. This wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our local Forest Park Starbucks, Forest Park Community Center, St. John Lutheran, and the many friends, neighbors, teachers and family who came to support us. Even the Cubs Car stopped by for Pancakes! Thank you, Forest Park for your generous support.

During the morning, however, they would like to support their brother by campaigning in our community for a couple of hours. For this reason, the campaign is organizing a canvass activity so the Kennedy relatives (mainly Chris’ sisters) can meet Forest Park/Oak Park/River Forest residents between 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Three of his adult children (Kate, 25; Chris Jr., 24; and Sarah, 22) may also be in Forest Park next Saturday. Please consider spending up to two hours helping the Kennedy sisters (or another Kennedy relative) canvass the community. As of now, the Kennedys are expected to arrive at the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison, at 10 a.m. The Kennedy campaign would like volunteers to join them in going door to door collecting signatures for Chris’ nominating petitions from 10-12:15. Some of the Kennedys may also wish to visit friendly businesses on Madison Street in Forest Park or in parts of Oak Park. They can either pass out literature or have a local

We welcome all to attend Sunday Mass at 10 a.m. on the St. Giles Parish campus on the second floor of the school gym, the southernmost building in the school complex at 1034 North Linden Avenue. Established in 1970, we are a laybased community within St. Giles Roman Catholic Parish. Our Mass is family-friendly. We encourage liturgically active toddlers. Children from 3 to 13 and young adults play meaningful parts in each Sunday liturgy. Together with the parish, we offer Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori-based religious education program for children in grades K-8. For more information, go to http://www.stgilesparish.org/ family-mass-community or call Bob Wielgos at 708-288-2196.
