Dustin Murguia has come in first in four kayak bass fishing tournaments in just the last two years. How can it be that a guy living in the center of the country’s third largest metropolitan area of nearly 10 million people has excelled in a sport that takes place primarily in natural settings?

The answer began when the now 41-yearold was growing up in Forest Park. His family owned what he called a “shack” — no electricity and “you did number two in a hole in the ground”— in southwestern Michigan on one of the small bodies of water that dot the area.

An al dente encounter with a veteran

orest Park has a proud history of honoring and supporting the military. Recently, though, I learned of another branch of the armed forces — the U.S. Army Dental Corps. I happened to meet a retired officer from this branch in a Forest Park bar. To protect his identity, I’ll call him Lieutenant Dentist.

He regaled me with stories about serving with Dental Team Six, an elite unit that had a supporting role in several military campaigns. The unit was formed, in 1976, for “Operation is it Safe?” This was a campaign to round up war criminals living in South America.

Fortunately, many of them had sensitive gums.

Team Six trained hard for this mission. During basic training, they not only had to run 10 miles with a 40-pound pack.

They were the only army unit that had portable dental chairs strapped to their backs. In the early days, they also had to carry heavy porcelain devices, known as cuspidors. The cuspidor provided a swirling stream of water, into which patients could spit.

Not only was the cuspidor clumsy to carry, it was considered non-hygienic.

Team Six was relieved when the cuspidor

was replaced by a much lighter suction device. The suction machine also prevented enemy combatants from claiming they were being water-boarded in the dental chair.

Lieutenant Dentist fondly remembers those early days of the unit. Especially the war games they conducted against Dental Team Seven. Taking a page from the movie Stripes, they captured the unit’s commander.

“We blindfolded him and took him to our headquarters,” he recalled. “All I had to do was run the drill next to his ear and he surrendered.”

In real combat situations, Team Six had a step-by-step process for neutralizing resistance. First, they would carpet bomb enemy territory with Gummy Bears, Jawbreakers and popcorn. “Popcorn is the dentist’s best friend,” Lieutenant Dentist confided. They considered dropping blow pops but these were prohibited by the Geneva Convention.

After the aerial assault, Team Six sent in the dental hygienists. They parachuted into enemy territory wearing their trademark pink and blue smocks. The hygienists were lightly armed with scalers, mirrors and x-ray holders but they were very effective

at softening enemy opposition. They found that many combatants were afraid of a simple cleaning and opted to cooperate instead.

Finally, members of Team Six would launch their surprise attack. They were heavily armed with drills, syringes and endodontic devices for performing root canals. The biggest problem they faced was the poor oral hygiene they encountered.

Though the team never suffered a casualty, several members were overcome by halitosis.

Lieutenant Dentist is justly proud of serving with the team. They were instrumental in several military campaigns, not only in South America but also in Europe.

Asia and Africa. There was always a humanitarian aspect to their operations.

“If we couldn’t persuade combatants to cooperate, we could at least fill their cavities,” he recalled. In this manner, the unit won the hearts and mouths of the civilian population.

“We were dentists and officers helping others while serving our country,” Lieutenant Dentist proudly declared, “I loved the smell of Novocain in the morning. It was the smell of victory.”

HALLOWEEN 1978 AT GARFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The Forest Park Review featured the 1978 Halloween celebrations in Forest Park. It reported that costumes of the year included Darth Vader, walking pumpkins, and vampires were among the most popular.

District 91 schools, lead by PTA and PTOs hosted apple bobbing and pumpkin decorating contests. The Howard Mohr Community Center had more than 300 children at their festivities, which included hanging from ropes, watching movies and eating apples and other treats.

The Park District had it’s annual Spook House and terrorized more than 1,400 visitors over three days.Visitors went through three floors successfully prepared to generate screams and freight.

Even Dr. Frankenstein displayed his monster creation to delight the Spook House visitors.

State Report Card shows D209’s layers of progress East ‘lowest-performing’while PMSA ‘exemplary’

The 2018 Illinois Report Card released on Oct. 31 by the Illinois State Board of Education features a new system that separates public schools throughout the state into four tiers — lowest-performing, underperforming, commendable and exemplary.

In D209, Proviso East was designated lowest-performing, Proviso West was designated commendable while Proviso Math and Science Academy was designated exemplary.

Each designation is based on 10 weighted measures of student performance, which are different for grade schools and high schools.

In grade schools (pre-K through eighth grade), measures include chronic absenteeism (weighted 10 percent); performance on various standardized test scores and evaluations, including PARCC (worth a combined total weight of more than 40 percent); and academic growth (50 percent).

An exemplary school is one whose performance is in the

top 10 percent of schools statewide, according to ISBE, while a commendable school has most of the characteristics of an exemplary school, but “whose performance is not in the top 10 percent of schools statewide.”

An underperforming school has at least one student demographic group performing at a proficiency levels seen in the lowest 5 percent of all schools in the state.

“By definition, an underperforming school is really a commendable school that happens to have a student group that’s not performing at the expected level,” Ralph Grimm, chief education officer for the ISBE, told NPR Illinois.

According to ISBE, around 70 percent of public schools in the state were designated commendable, while 15 percent were designated underperforming on this year’s report card.

Schools designated lowest-performing are the lowestperforming 5 percent of schools in the state.

Underperforming and lowest-performing schools will undergo an improvement process that includes a needs assessment, additional federal funding and more state resources.

“The purpose of the designation is to drive resources to the students in the greatest need,” said State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith in a statement. “No single data point can capture what makes a school great. We encourage schools to use the designation as a tool to communicate about strengths and challenges and to engage communities and stakeholders in the success of all students.”

“The new designations on the State Report Card present a positive trajectory earned through collective work demonstrating levels of success,” said D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez in a statement the district released on Nov. 1.

Rodriguez said that the district “welcomes the changes” in this year’s report card, but emphasized that the designations are “not a complete picture of our performance.”

He said that the district will use the report card data “in conjunction with our internal data to inform our continuous improvement efforts.”

D91 students see slight increase in PARCC scores Come 2020, the district aims to increase student PARCC scores by 10 percent

As state scores in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test flatlined year over year, Forest Park District 91 students moved steadily forward in the annual test, with the district earning the second-highest rating of “commendable.” The Illinois State Board of Education launched the new rating system for schools and districts this year, which aims to measure students’ growth in PARCC. Forest Park’s rating was higher than many other schools in the area.

“That commendable rating, we’re very proud of it. It’s not just due to the efforts of the schools, it’s also due to the partnership that we have with parents,” Superintendent Louis Cavallo said. “We appreciate their support and their help, and without them we would not have made the designation that we did.”

Thirty-five percent of D91 students either met or exceeded the Illinois State Board of Education’s standards in English Language Arts (ELA), up from 33 percent last year, nearly meeting the state average of 37 percent. Meanwhile, 18 percent of students either met or exceeded state standards in math—up from 16 percent the school year before, but still behind the state average of 32 percent. The state-mandated PARCC is administered in March at all public elementary and middle schools in Illinois.

“We’re working with our new curriculum to improve and we are making gains,” Ca-

vallo said. “We want to see more gains, but we believe we’re putting the right things in place and are working hard to do so.”

Over the past few years, D91 struggled to make changes because schools were using the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment, which did not provide “data to really hone in on where to make changes,” Cavallo said. The district has since switched to the FastBridge test, which provides instant feedback on concepts students don’t understand and that Cavallo said is better aligned to PARCC questions.

It is one of many changes D91 has made recently to increase students’ test scores.

This year, the district implemented monthly early release days, where all staff look at students’ test scores and reflect on what changes can be made to drive learner growth. D91 has also implemented a new schedule at Forest Park Middle School, along with a new curriculum across the board, using materials Cavallo said are more rigorous for teaching ELA and math.

Come 2020, D91 believes these changes will increase student PARCC scores in math and ELA by 10 percent.

“Everyone wants a magic wand, a quick fix and they don’t want to wait for things to be done right. I am as anxious as everyone else to see the improvement that we want to accomplish,” Cavallo said.

D91’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders outpaced the state in ELA scores, with greater percentages of students passing the subject. Fourth- and fifth-grade individualized education program (IEP) learners also per-

formed ahead of the state average in ELA. “Our special education students are outpacing the state average. We provide a continuum of services in D91 that most districts don’t provide and very, very few districts our size provide,” Cavallo said. He said the district works to identify and intervene with students who may have an IEP early. “Those students that have an IEP are given an opportunity to succeed. We have a very inclusive community… All kids deserve to go to the school in their neighborhood,” he said.

Free and reduced-price third-, fourth- and fifth-graders likewise performed ahead of the state average in ELA. For the most part, the district as a whole struggled with math, although third-graders outpaced the state in the subject.

Nearly 45 percent of third-graders either met or exceeded the expectation in math, compared to a state average of 37.7 percent.

As at all levels of D91, greater numbers of white third-graders passed math and ELA compared to their black and Hispanic counterparts. Forty-seven percent of white students either met or exceeded the state average in math, compared to 36.2 percent of black students who passed the subject.

Nearly 65 percent of white students passed ELA, compared to 33.3 percent black and 45.5 percent of Hispanic students who met or exceeded the state’s standard.

“We are well aware and very honest about the achievement gap and we are directly and explicitly addressing that. We are working with the National Equity [Project] and we are looking at systemic reasons to why

this occurs,” Cavallo said. The National Equity Project offers leadership training for schools to help improve learning for all students.

“We are in our first year in a multiyear endeavor. There is no easy, quick answer to that. There are multiple reasons and there are multiple opportunities that we have to address,” Cavallo said.

D91 fourth-graders also struggled with math, with 15.5 percent passing the subject compared to a state average of 31.5 percent. White students also outpaced their black and Hispanic counterparts in ELA and math subjects—64.3 percent of white students met or exceeded state standards in ELA, compared to 43.7 percent of black and 25 percent of Hispanic students. Nearly 39 percent of white students passed math, compared to 6.3 percent of black and 16.7 percent of Hispanic students who met or exceeded state standards. IEP fourth-graders struggled in math, with 6.7 percent at least meeting the state standard, compared to an average of 10.1 percent. Those fourth graders who qualified for free and reduced-price lunch also struggled in the subject—12.3 percent passed math, compared to a state average of 17.1 percent.

Fifth-graders continued to struggle in math, with 15.4 percent of D91 fifth-graders at least meeting the standard in the subject compared to a state average of 30.8 percent.

parts—nearly 58 percent of white students passed ELA, while just 31.7 percent of black and 36.4 percent of Hispanic learners met state standards. About 26 percent of white students passed math, compared to 9.8 percent of black and 18.2 percent of Hispanic students. No IEP students passed math.

About 9 percent of fifth-graders who qualified for free and reduced-price lunch at least met state standards in math, compared to a state average of 16.5 percent.

Students in sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade struggled to meet state standards in PARCC. “Our middle schoolers are the ones we still have the most concern about, that we’re making the most changes around,” Cavallo said.

D91 sixth-graders nearly met the state average in ELA, with 32.9 percent of D91 students passing the subject compared to a state average of 34.1 percent. Just 6 percent met state standards in math, compared to a state average of about 27 percent. No IEP students passed math or ELA, although 16.7 “approached” the ELA state standard.

About 24 percent of the grade’s free and reduced-price lunch students at least met state standards in ELA, compared to a state average of 19.3 percent. Two percent of free/ reduced price lunch students passed math, compared to a state average of 13.2 percent.

“The middle school’s piloting one math program this semester, so we’ll see whether or not it will be rigorous enough or if we need to look at another. We are pushing the rigor,” Cavallo said.

In seventh-grade, 26.3 percent of students

passed ELA, compared to a state average of about 40 percent. Nearly 18 percent of seventh-graders passed math, compared to a state average of 30.7 percent. The Illinois Report Card did not list any IEP or free/reduced price lunch students.

About 24 percent of eighth-graders at least met state standards in ELA, compared to a state average of 36.4 percent of students who passed the subject. About 10 percent of eighth-graders passed math, compared to a state average of 30.5 percent who at least met state standards in the subject. Students of color performed behind their white counterparts.

Half of the grade’s white students passed ELA, while just 30 percent of Hispanic and about 17 percent of black students at least met state standards in the subject. Thirty percent of white students passed math, compared to the 5.1 percent of black and 10 percent of Hispanic students who met or exceeded the subject’s standard. More IEP students passed ELA and math compared to the state average. About 21 percent of those eighth-graders who qualified for free and reduced-price lunch passed ELA, nearly reaching the state average of 22 percent. In math, just 6.4 percent of free and reduced price lunch students at least met the subject’s state standard, compared to a state average of 16.2 percent.

Cavallo pointed to the eighth graders’ algebra performance as a bright spot.

“When we implemented algebra in eighth grade, we initially said we wanted a quarter of kids in there. Well, we have 50 percent now. We actually bumped that up,” he said.

D91 implemented algebra this year.

Library launches $1 million renovation plan Working with the same architect who designed the Roos Recreation Center

The Forest Park Public Library recently unveiled rough plans for a redesign of its interior spaces, as a reaction to the changing ways residents are using the library. The renovation will cost up to $1.3 million and take about five months.

“The library is not just a place that houses books but serves as a place for people to study, gather, use resources and technology, and connect with their community,” Pilar Shaker, library director, said in a statement. “This project is in response to community input as well as continuing to meet the library’s mission of providing education, entertainment, and empowerment to Forest Park.”

Library trustees finished hearing pitches from construction firms — Z3 Solutions; W.B. Olson; Frederick Quinn Corporation; Shales McNutt Construction — at a regular board meeting on Nov. 1, and will select the firm to complete construction at the next meeting on Nov. 19. Trustees have already selected for the project the Itasca-based Williams Architects, which also designed the Roos Recreation Center.

Once a construction firm is selected, the architect, construc-

tion firm and library officials will hold a public hearing to get resident feedback on renovation plans.

“One of our goals is to give the beautiful windows and light back to the public,” Shaker said, noting that under the architect’s rough plans, staff offices were intentionally moved to the lower level, so patrons could enjoy the windows that currently surround them.

Staff spaces would join the youth collection and program room, early literacy play area, meeting room, two quiet study rooms and kitchen on the lower level, under the early plans.

On the upper level would be four study rooms; the teen program area and library; audio visual and new material; a quiet room, near quiet computers and tables; adult services; a vending café; collaborative computer and technology zone; and lounge seating. Shaker also mentioned that the library hopes to add a family bathroom, change its carpet, refresh its staff rooms and more.

“It’s been a long time coming. Most of our interiors are original,” she said, noting that they have remained unchanged over the library’s more than two decades at 7555 Jackson Blvd.

The project will not require any new taxes, debt or change

“The current building has gotten a lot of use over the past 23 years,” Childs said in a statement. “We are excited about making changes to continue to meet the needs of our community.”

Historical Society honors veterans’ oral history Free dinner for veterans from 4 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the American Legion hall

When Nancy Cavaretta moved to Forest Park five years ago, she felt called to “do something really significant for the community.” Joining the Historical Society of Forest Park, plus the fact that her son has been in the Navy for 10 years, motivated her to begin a project a year or so ago with veterans living in town “My oldest son is a career Navy guy, and I’ve gotten really close to my daughter-in-law during his many deployments,” Cavaretta said. “It’s been really tough at times. The upheaval in many military families is unfathomable.”

When Cavaretta started thinking about what form the project should take, she was inspired by the StoryCorps model of recording oral histories. Equipped with a Ph.D. in education and skills in research she found seven Forest Parkers who have served or are still serving in the military.

After interviewing them, she put together “Our Neighbors, Our Heroes,” a multimedia presentation that will debut from 4 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the American Legion hall. Afterwards, it will be presented on the Historical Society website. The seven Forest Park residents featured include: ■■CLIFFORD LEBER who was drafted in 1965 and served in Viet Nam in an artillery battalion. He was awarded an Army Commendation Medal Against Hostile Forces, retired from the Forest Park Fire Dept. in 2003 and is proud of his service saying, “I would do it again for my country.”

■■RAPHAEL DAVIS is now a reservist in the National Guard following g a 19 year career in the Army. He served in two combat situations, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He is married to Patricia Salazar, a Marine Corps veteran.

■■PATRICIA SALAZAR had bad experiences in the Marine Corps. As a woman deployed into combat [in Kuwait] her judgments were often undermined by male counterparts.

She now is vocal about inequities in the military, speaking out about issues related to women in the military, PTSD and the complexities of adjusting to civilian society after combat. She is married to Raphael Davis ■■PAUL ROACH was deployed in Afghanistan is a Navy physician putting what was left of broken bodies back together again. His family has been “with him” emotionally and spiritually during his deployments. An indication that their experience as a military family has been positive is seen in the fact that one of his daughters is a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

■■MIKE MOHR was drafted at the age of 19 and served with the Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Viet Nam. He received both a Bronze Star and a Letter of Commendation.

He is outspoken in criticism of the psychological and emotional care which has been lacking for Viet Nam vets.

■■JOSEPH BYRNES learned to speak Vietnamese in order to do his job of stopping the infiltration of the Viet Cong along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. He received a Purple Heart and Air Force Commendation medals. He is a retired FPPD officer and is now a Forest Park commissioner.

Part of Cavaretta’s goal in hosting “Our Neighbors, Our Heroes” is to simply give veterans the recognition they deserve through the multimedia presentation and a program book with pictures and summary biographies.

But part of her agenda is to change attitudes in people who have never served their country in the armed forces. She is interested in replacing opinions amplified in social media with facts. “These were ordinary people,” she said, “who were compelled to do extraordinary things. The persons I interviewed who served in Vietnam, for example, were all 19 and 20 years old and they made decisions and sacrifices on the battlefield that I don’t think most people are aware of.”

Now that we don’t have a draft, she said, only a very small percentage of Americans have first-hand experiences with the military.

She added that hearing the stories of veterans’ courage, sense of duty and respect for authority might help to counteract what she called the “narcissism” and “meanness” prevalent in contemporary society.

Twisted Cookie, firefighters host food pantry fundraiser Twisted Cookie and the Forest Park Fire Department have partnered in a fundraiser to support the food pantry at the Howard Mohr Community Center, to be held from 12 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 10 at 7401 Madison St. Twisted Cookie owner Joana Fischer said the fundraiser was the firefighters’ idea, and four of Forest Park’s finest will be whipping up milk shakes, lattes and more behind the counter. Twenty percent of all proceeds from the day

will benefit the fundraiser. She said firefighters will be getting a master lesson before serving customers.

“We want to make sure the milkshakes they’re going to be giving are good,” she joked.

“They’ll be making hot chocolate, lattes, milkshakes, cookies and sundaes, whatever. Anything we serve there, that’s what they’re going to do.”

Two fire trucks will also be parked outside Twisted Cookie

for kids to marvel at. In addition to donating a portion of the proceeds, Twisted Cookie will also accept checks and non-perishable goods for the community center.

The group’s goal is to raise about $5,000; so far, Fischer said she’s collected $800, in addition to several non-perishable goods.

“It’s important for all of us to support each other because that’s how we all succeed,” she said.

Writing a novel in 30 Days with NaNoWriMo Maria Maxham has written nine novels. But she said she never would have gotten the confidence to pick up the pen without NaNoWriMo

Maria Maxham has published nine novels and is a popular author in the romance genre, known by her pen name Maria Monroe. But it wasn’t until the Forest Park resident discovered National Novel Writing Month in November that she said she gained the confidence to finish her first novel.

“People feel really daunted and think they could never write a thick book,” said Maxham. “But if you just sit down and do it you can get it done. It is just putting down one word after the next.”

Known commonly as “NaNoWriMo,” the thousands who participate in the event aim to finish a novel in 30 days. NaNoWriMo is a nonprofit that started in 2006 to provide a community and accountability system for those interested in undertaking the challenge of writing a full novel in the month of November. More than anything, according to Maxham, NaNoWriMo exists to show people that if they are interested in writing a novel, they can do it. The philosophy of NaNoWriMo is that if you sit down and write everyday, you can write a novel, no matter your background or experience as a writer. Maxham’s life experience and creative process reflects that sentiment.

Maxham originally pursued a career path in accounting before she realized that her true passion was in words rather than numbers. She marked her transition to a writing life by receiving a Master of Fine Arts from the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa.

“A writer friend of mine dared me to write a romance novel, and once I started writing [in the genre], I fell in love,” she explained.

While in the process of writing a book, Maxham now sits down every day and writes a minimum of 2,000 words with no regard to the quality of the writing. What matters for Maxham is showing up at the page and getting words down on paper.

“If I don’t, I lose momentum and focus,” she said, adding: “Don’t be afraid to write badly, no novelists write perfect first drafts. Writing a bad first draft is better than not writing anything at all. You have to start somewhere.”

Besides getting writers in the habit of writing everyday, what makes NaNoWriMo so effective is the organization’s comprehensive website, Maxham said. NaNoWriMo.org includes discussion boards, support groups, and places to go for advice, all resources that

Maxham found to be invaluable her first time undertaking the challenge. “All you have to do is sign up on the website to get started,” she said. “Once signed up, you go through a process of announcing the name of your novel, uploading a daily word count, and talking with other writers.”

While a majority of NaNoWriMo community interactions happen virtually, there are also physical locations where writers can meet to discuss their work, get help, and write together.

The Forest Park Public library is one such location. Maxham will be serving as a resource at the library all month for anyone seeking NaNoWriMo-related assistance.

While attending a NaNoWriMo physical location is not required, Maxham finds it to be a great way to stay on track. The library has sign-up sheets for writers and NaNo swag items available for the taking. Visit the library every Thursday in November from 6:30 to 8p.m. There you can find Maxham and other local writers working together to accomplish their shared goal.

“If someone is even considering trying NaNoWriMo, they should just go for it,” she said.

Empowering Gardens gets space for the winter

For the second year in a row Art Sundry, the owner of caffe DeLuca, is allowing Empowering Gardens to use another space he owns at 7415 Madison St. to do business during the holidays and the winter months that follow.

Empowering Gardens, a nonprofit 501C3, is in the third year of a five-year lease on the property at 7730 Madison St. where the garden center does business at its outdoor location, as soon as the weather warms up in the spring, until the end of October.

Their website states that the organization is “dedicated to providing career-oriented training and continued supportive services to further integrate people with disabilities in the workforce and community. We will focus on developing cognitive, social, and emotional skills to help these individuals achieve their vocational goals.”

Ana Solares is the director of operations at the nonprofit. She and Richard Biggins, director of employment, say they are grateful to Sundry, because without his generosity they would have to lay off their staff,

Record number Proviso Together kicks off re-election campaign Wagner, Medina, Kelly held kickoff party on Nov. 3 of registered voters in Proviso

No matter the outcome of Tuesday’s elecelec tion, voters in Proviso township have alal ready made history.

Across the township, 96,611 people were registered to vote for the November 2018 election, up 13.49 percent from the last midterm vote in November 2014, according to data from the Cook County Clerk’s Office.

In a statement, Cook County Clerk David Orr said the number of regisregis tered voters broke records in his office.

Across suburban Cook County, mail ballot ap applications increased by 20,000 from 2014 and, as of Nov. 4, nearly 72,000 had been returned by voters, also a new record. Early voting turnout was up 86.3 percent from the 2014 gubernatorial election.

“The ever-growing popularity of pre-election day voting, combined with some hot races throughout the ballot have shattered previous records for gubernatorial elections,” Orr said in a statement.

Proviso Together, the political party that accomplished a seven-member supermajority last February when all four of its candidates were voted to seats on the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board, held a campaign kickoff on Saturday for the party’s original three candidates elected in 2015.

Among the four newcomers, three — Rodney Alexander, Amanda Grant and Samuel Valtierrez — remain committed Proviso Together members while Arbdella Patterson has parted ways with the group.

The kickoff was held at the home of board member Claudia Medina, who along with D209 board President Ned Wagner and member Theresa Kelly, round out the Proviso Together slate.

When reached by phone on Nov. 6, Wagner seized on a range of developments over the last four years to argue why he

thinks he and his running mates deserve another term.

“The thing I’m most proud of as a board member is that we have been able to be disciplined in our spending,” Wagner said. “We’ve saved money that will be put toward the facility master plan. If we stick to this plan and continue to discipline our spending, we’ll be able to do a lot of really good work on these buildings so students can have great learning environments.”

Wagner also said he’s proud of the

“foundational work we’ve put in at Proviso East,” adding that, despite the recent State Report Card data designating East a lowest-performing school, “every issue on that report card is being addressed very assertively and creatively.”

Sept. 18 was the first day to circulate petitions for independent and nonpartisan candidates, along with new political parties. The last day to file petitions for all candidates is Dec. 17.

Two homes broken into, burglarized Between 2 p.m. on Nov. 3 and 6:52 p.m. on Nov. 4, someone broke into a home on the 800 block of Lathrop, taking four bottles of prescription medications; two wedding rings; a class ring; a gold money clip; a silver medal; four silver bracelets valued at $200; three bottles of alcohol; six bottles of wine; foreign currency worth $60; tools; $200 cash; and two hard drives. In the basement, the victim said he was missing an acoustic guitar and mixing board. He also said he was missing a copy of his house keys. Officers noticed the rear window of the home was open, and the screen ripped. From the garage, someone took a Craftsman gas-powered blower, a trimmer and a battery.

■ Sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Oct. 29, someone broke into a home on the 200 block of Rockford and took approximately $50 worth of loose change. The victim told police he did not lock the rear porch door.

Thief rides off with bike Between Oct. 17 and 9:58 a.m. on Oct. 27, someone stole a Signature-brand bike from a home on the 900 block of Troost. The victim told police the bicycle was not locked, and was parked underneath the home’s back porch.

License plate lifted Sometime between 3 and 8 p.m. on Nov. 1, someone stole a temporary license plate from a Nissan Altima parked at the Forest Park Plaza mall, 7610 Roosevelt Road.

Wallet stolen while in line for the bus A Chicago man told police someone stole his wallet as he was waiting for a PACE bus about 10:43 a.m. on Oct. 31 at 711 Desplaines Ave. The victim said he was waiting in line to pay his fare while a woman argued with the bus driver. He believes it was during that time someone stole his wallet, which contained his state ID, social security card, County Care health insurance card and two debit cards.

Honda broken into At some point between 10:45 and 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 27, someone broke into a Honda parked at Walmart, 1300 Desplaines Ave. The owner, from Elmwood Park, told police someone stole a pair of shoes, two Visa gift cards worth a total value of $1,500, two pairs of diamond earrings, two gold chains and two gold charms. The victim told police he locked his doors, but that they were unlocked when he returned to vehicle.

Brick thrown through bedroom windows A man was lying in bed when someone threw a brick through his bedroom window on the 1100 block of Harlem about 7:20 p.m. on Nov. 1, causing glass to fly across the room and strike him. The victim suffered a minor laceration to his knee but refused medical attention.

During the same time frame, someone also threw a brick through another bedroom window in the same building.

Public indecency on the Blue Line A CTA employee told police a man peed on a wall and started fondling himself in front of her about 2:15 a.m. on Nov. 2 at the Forest Park Blue Line Station, 711 Desplaines Ave. The Maywood man was cited for public indecency.

Prescription meds stolen from Walmart A Brookfield man fled Walmart, 1300 Desplaines Ave., about 5 p.m. on Oct. 31, after stealing multiple boxes of prescription medications. A Berwyn police officer spotted a man who matched the suspect’s description riding his bike at the intersection of 15th and Wenonah in Berwyn. The officer curbed the man and found several boxes of prescription medications in his backpack, valued at more than $360 total.

Police also called emergency medical services because the man was complaining that he had trouble breathing.

Walmart security arrived on the scene and positively identified the Brookfield man as the thief. The suspect was cited for retail theft and transported to the Rush Oak Park Hospital’s emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Oct. 29-Nov.5, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

This isn’t the TV show’s first trip to Forest Park

The Chicago’s Best TV show visited Forest Park again on Nov. 1, filming Twisted Cookie as part of a cookie crawl to be aired in the coming weeks. Host Elliott Bambrough said viewers nominated Twisted Cookie, 7401 Madison St., to be featured in the themed episode, which will feature five restaurants from across the city and suburbs.

“Based on what I’ve seen today, they actually offer something that’s unique, which is the cupcake cookies,” Bambrough said. “So that obviously appealed to our audience. Our producers saw it and were like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy and interesting, let’s go and check them out.’”

Bambrough spent the day learning how to make Twisted Cookie’s turtle cookie cupcakes, which are a variation on the classic turtle confection. When he talked to the Review, he hadn’t yet finished making the cookie but said the frosting tasted “insanely good.”

“If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you can’t go wrong. You stack two cookies and put chocolate cheesecake frosting inside. I mean that

is a defining moment for me,” he said.

Bambrough said Chicago’s Best has previously visited Junction Diner, Shanahan’s and many other Forest Park establishments.

He said he’s also involved with the local nonprofit Opportunity Knocks, which works with young adults with learning disabilities.

“We’ve been out with Chicago’s Best to Forest Park many times before in the past, so it’s a community we know and a community that we love,” he said. “Support local mom-and-pop stores, those are the ones that are doing some serious good in the community. Shop local and help this area become even bigger and better than it is.”

Owner Joana Fischer said she found out Chicago’s Best would feature Twisted Cookie on Oct. 30, two days before they came out to tape the show. She said she loves the show and, when she saw online that Bambrough wanted to do a cookie crawl, she rallied fans to nominate her business.

“We create cookies with a twist. We have some traditions, but a lot of the things I try to come up with I want to give them a twist,” Fischer said. “We’ve turned a cupcake into a cookie, we’ve turned pies into cookies, we’ve recently turned cheese cake into cookies. So it’s just taking the dessert idea and trying to do something creative and fun with it.”

But when he got out of his grandfather’s van at the shack, the sounds came from croaking frogs and chirping crickets and the wind in the branches of trees. The first thing he would do after escaping from the van would be to run down to the pier to see if he could spot a blue gill or a crayfish.

He got “hooked” on fishing. His uncle gave him an old rod with a line, a sinker, and a bobber without a reel. He’d put a worm on the hook, drop the line in the water and spend the day fishing on the dock while the grown-ups were out in a boat on the lake.

His family would also make longer trips to the Hayward area in northern Wisconsin.

“I could spend the entire day,” he recalled, “rain or shine, out on the pier staring at my bobber and waiting for it to move. If I ran out of bait, I’d flip over some rocks and grab a few worms. The patience I showed for fishing was odd considering my behavior when I wasn’t. I was a very impulsive child.

I think more children in urban areas should be exposed to the pulse of nature and the joy of catching a fish.”

After graduating from Forest Park Middle School, Murguia moved to Palatine to live with his father, to a town which in those days felt a bit more rural than it does now.

He remembers riding his 10-speed bike while carrying his rod and tackle box to one of the ponds in the surrounding area.

“While the other guys were chasing girls,” he recalled, “I was chasing fish.”

He also got “hooked” on fishing shows on TV like In-Fisherman and Midwest Outdoors and would read Bassmasters magazine, cover to cover, several times.

“I had such a small area to fish from as an adolescent,” he recalled. “It was basically the sub-division ponds that were all very similar in size and contour. But I made it work. Most of the fundamentals of bass fishing and casting I learned from the countless hours practicing at these locations.”

After graduating from college, he got “distracted by life” and pursued other interests, going fishing only occasionally. Then six years ago his wife, Maria, bought him a cheap kayak from Sports Authority. This was the gift that kept on giving. His “starter” kayak got him back on the water more consistently, and while paddling around the main lake at Busse Woods near Schaumburg, he bumped into a guy who told him about kayak bass fishing tournaments, the CPR (catch, photo and release) method, and the online application called “Tourney X.” Murguia entered the Michigan Kayak Trail during the 2017 season. He felt intimidated by the other fisherman who looked “so professional” in their state-of-the-art kayaks and gear, but he figured he had nothing to

He placed 17th out of 120-plus anglers and realized he could compete. He placed in the top 10 in his second event and his third time out in his small, beginner’s plastic kayak, Murguia outfished the entire field at the Gull Lake Marine MKT Grand River Event.

The prize was a 12-foot Hobie Mirage Pro Angler, which, according to Murguia, is the Mercedes Benz of kayaks.

A Pro Angler is built specifically for the angler with plenty of storage, adjustable seating and incredible stability — you can stand and fish. And it’s powered by pedaling (Mirage Pedal Drive) instead of paddling, which frees both hands for fishing. He won another Hobie Outback two months later, taking first place in the Michigan Kayak Trail Championship on Paw-Paw Lake in Michigan.

This year he won two more competitions.

The prizes included thousands of dollars, hundreds of dollars in gear and, yes, more kayaks. Murguia won the 2018 MKT Championship taking home a VIBE Maverick 120 Stand Up Paddleboard, and earned a Bonafide SS127 Kayak by outfishing the state’s best anglers at the Illinois Kayak Bass League Championships last month on Lake Jacksonville.

While he appreciates the prize money, Murguia is keeping his day job as a middle school social studies teacher in the near west suburbs. The prize money he has won barely pays for his expenses — thousands spent on gear, gas, food and lodging. Teaching is also a good fit for him because three months off in the summer allows him to pursue his passion in ways many professionals cannot.

He loves teaching, but it comes with much stress and he says kayak fishing is a wonderful antidote to the emotional drain that goes with his profession.

“Fishing is my miracle drug,” he noted.

“It is a cure-all with no side effects. It is the healthiest way to cope with the rigors of life and puts you in closer contact with nature — to the natural rhythms of our planet.”

He enjoys the competitive aspect of CPR kayak fishing, which he believes to be the fastest growing segment of the sport fishing industry, but he also loves the connection with nature. The high-end bass fishing boats seen on TV programs are incredible but come with limitations — they’re costly, noisy and use gasoline. You need a truck to tow it and space to store it. A kayak is virtually silent which disturbs neither the fish he wants to catch nor the wildlife along the shoreline. He has floated to within feet of birds, turtles and even deer.

“The thrill of competing is hard to beat,” he said, “but I’d be doing the same thing if the competitions did not exist. Fishing is my slice of pleasure in life. Prizes are cool

but this won’t make you rich. Happiness and the camaraderie of the kayak fishing community are the true rewards. I’m also able to spend long hours with my loved ones — they often accompany me on my travels.”

Maria plays an important role in his avocation, accompanying him on his travels to tournaments. Though not hooked on fishing, she will help him get the kayak in the water early in the morning and spend the day hiking nearby trails or exploring state parks with Lewis, their faithful Border Collie mix.

She often settles for enjoying a ride on her own Hobie kayak with Lewis included.

A move from the crowdedness of the Chicago area may be somewhere in the near future.

“I’d like to relocate to a more rural setting and continue teaching,” Murguia said.

“I could imagine being a part-time kayak guide and writing about my travels and experience. My dreams remain the same as they ever were. A small home and an uncomplicated life, a loving wife, a pleasant dog and a piano to play. And of course, the ability to fish more often.”

Forest Park hotbed of sexually transmitted infections Village has high cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia syphilis

Forest Park has one of the highest rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis infections in all of suburban Cook County, according to data recently released by the Cook County Department of Public Health.

The high rates were so concerning to county health officials that the department convened a roundtable to discuss the problem and ways to bring the rate down, particularly among teens and young adults, at the Maywood Park District on Oct. 25.

Around 22 representatives from 13 different agencies from a range of sectors, including healthcare, government, education, faith-based and workforce development, attended the discussion.

The data was included in the Annual Sexually Transmitted Infections Surveillance Report that the department released in June 2018. The report, which comes out every two years, is based on cases from 2014 to 2016.

Forest Park had between 490 and 883 reported cases of chlamydia per 100,000 people, according to the report. The 2016 chlamydia rate for all of suburban Cook County

during that period was 461 per 100,000.

The village had between 97 and 237 cases of gonorrhea per 100,000 in 2016. That year, the gonorrhea rate for all of suburban Cook County was 113 per 100,000. Forest Park also had at least 18 cases of primary- and secondary-stage syphilis — double the average rate across suburban Cook County.

During the Oct. 25 meeting, county health officials said that chlamydia is the most frequently reported infectious disease in the country.

“In 2017, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the chlamydia rates (per 100,000) were 529 nationally,” health officials explained in a statement released this week. “They were 588.6 in Illinois, and 494.8 in” suburban Cook County.

During the roundtable discussion, county health officials said that gonorrhea “is the second most frequently reported infectious disease in the U.S. According to the CDC, gonorrhea rates (per 100,000) were 172 nationally, 186 in Illinois, and 129.4 in [suburban Cook County].”

Damian Christiansen, the health department’s director of communicable disease prevention and control, said that bringing the rates down requires a variety of actions.

Those in attendance honed in on a variety of concrete solutions to addressing the infection rates, including providing ageappropriate sex education in schools, reducing the fear and stigma related to sex and testing “in a supportive and non-judgmental way” and encouraging people who are sexually active to get treated and tell others about treatment.

Christiansen said that in order to reduce the number of sexually transmitted infections, “we all need to work together – health departments, health care providers, parents, and everyone who is sexually active.

Forest Park will be OK

J

ust as the polls open on Tuesday morning, here are our thoughts as this long and unnecessary referendum on video gaming comes to its end.

How fitting that the final 24 hours of this way-toohostile battle included allegations of lawn signs being stolen or defaced with some type of feces. Forest Park, we have got to do better than this.

The election is over. Voters, yes, finally voters, decided either that video gaming is OK and can continue or chose to ban it from Forest Park. This must be seen as the legitimate and final decision on this contentious issue. Doesn’t matter which side you’ve been on, how many petition signatures you gathered or how many Facebook messages you posted.

This has to be over.

We were gratified a few weeks back when the Review convened representatives of the pro- and anti-gaming sides for a very good conversation and the anti-gaming duo offered up their promise that they will abide by the voters’ decision, that there will be no further electoral action on gaming. We expect the bar and restaurant owners who have supported gaming to take the same position.

It is a tough time in America to be talking about healing. Not our strong suit these days. But in Forest Park it is critical that conscious efforts be made to find common ground, shared values. It is incumbent upon the principal actors on both sides of this fight to look for opportunities to connect. We’ve seen some crossover tied to support for the reform agenda at District 209. Maybe that is an opportunity to share a goal.

We’re no Pollyannas. This has been a bitter fight. And as this Election Day passes, the April municipal election comes rounding into view. Today the Review reports on a slate of candidates forming around the mayoral bid of Rory Hoskins. Within several weeks we’ll know all of the candidates running in the spring.

There will be fundamental issues to debate. But let’s agree not to re-litigate gaming. As we’ve noted, ultimately this week’s election was in many ways more about how governing has come to work in Forest Park than about gaming. It was about the divide exacerbated these past three years rather than consciously narrowed.

We’re persuaded by those who see the current chasm as a scrum between Forest Park’s proud and wonderful blue collar DNA and a new and more progressive, more urban-aligned group of residents. But while we see the divide, we don’t see any good reason to pick sides. There is no reason these two groups of devoted Forest Parkers can’t work together. Whether your family moved to Forest Park 100 years ago or you’ve arrived in the past few years, every resident chose Forest Park because there is something great about this town. Let’s celebrate it.

This election is over. Congratulations to the winners.

Becoming response-able

he families of the 11 people killed

by Robert Bowers at the Tree of Life Synagogue on Oct. 27, and to a lesser degree all of us who are capable of feeling empathy, have to figure out how to respond to what may be the deadliest attack against Jews in American history.

Pittsburgh, of course, is not the only city to experience mass shootings. Santa Fe High School, 5/18/18, 10 killed; Parkland, 2/14/18, 17 killed; Las Vegas, 10/1/17, 58 killed; Pulse Nightclub, 6/12/16, 49 killed.

“I feel that our school is a safe environment” said Ariel Smith who was an eighthgrader at the Forest Park Middle School last April, “although due to everything that we’ve seen, there’s always some fear of the unknown and how the day will go.”

Although we are seeing many institutions taking steps to prevent bad things from happening to innocent people, Ariel’s comment articulates an awareness growing in most of us that a shooter or an overpass falling on our car or a diagnosis from an oncologist can change our lives in the blink of an eye.

Because none of us can prevent all bad things from happening, it is so important to learn and teach responseability, i.e. the ability to respond to bad things that no one was able to prevent.

Thirty years ago, I went through a divorce, which was painful enough in itself, but what made the whole experience worse was that I didn’t have much ability to respond. I felt like a helpless victim before the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune … until it dawned on me that I could acquire response-ability.

I learned how to let go of my rugged male individualism and joined a divorce recovery group, after which I joined a men’s group which has been meeting every Thursday evening for the last 28 years. From my friends in 12-step programs, I learned the phrase “fake it till you make it” and pushed myself to go to movies and restaurants by myself until I became comfortable doing so.

If you’ve been through it, you’ll understand that it took me years to recover some semblance of emotional/ spiritual equilibrium, but letting go of picturing myself as a powerless victim and embracing my ability to respond was empowering.

I have role models all over the place for how to be response-able.

Virtually all my black friends — Jeff, Bob, Joel, Rory, John, Cecilia, Bill, Rodney, Loree, Tonya — show me how to be response-able every day. They’ve all experienced some or all of the indignities that go with being a person of color in this country, but none of them “sit on a pity pot,” as my 12-step friends like to say.

They’ve all found safe places to grieve — like my

divorce support group was for me — but then after they’ve recovered to a sufficient degree, they get back into life through their participation in nonprofits or local government or church. They use the emotions they’ve felt during the hard times to fuel and energize their giving back to the community.

Virtually all of my friends at the Progress Center for Independent Living — Clark, Larry, Henry, Tonya, Geo, Horacio, Gary, Loree — show me how to be response-able every day.

Three are blind, two were born with cerebral palsy, one is a dwarf, but none of them waste their time sitting on a pity pot.

They know how to intentionally grieve their losses, but somehow each has learned to respond to the bad things that happened to them by incorporating painful experiences into their character, and all of them focus on what they can do instead of dwelling on what they can’t.

Response-ability is a set of skills that can be taught to children by the time they are able to talk. We are cheating our kids if we try to protect them from all bad things — from falling when learning to ride a two-wheeler to being exposed to the reality of lynchings in our past or mass shootings happening today.

If we want our children to grow into strong, mature adults, they have to learn response-ability and the only way to acquire that set of skills is to suffer in doses appropriate to their developmental stage.

I agree with the following aphorism: Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.

One of my seminary professors advised us to intentionally introduce some manageable crises into the congregations we would be serving — not to enjoy making them suffer but to toughen them up so that when real crises appear out of nowhere, they are able to respond with “we know how to do this” rather than feeling like helpless victims.

A neighbor of mine named Isaac runs a youth program in the city with kids who are victims of all sorts of bad things. One of the core principles of his work with these kids is to teach them to not think of themselves as victims even though in reality they are.

In effect, he is teaching them response-ability: You may not have had control over what happened but you do have control over the way you respond.

I’ll bet my pay for this column that the members of Tree of Life have developed response-ability through every funeral they’ve attended in the past, after each experience of anti-Semitism they’ve suffered, through every Yom Kippur they have kept.

They will grieve, but their mourning will take place in community. They will weep, but will do so in the arms of friends.

And they will bounce back to practice tikkun olam, repairing the world.

Jon Kubricht Of the four, only Jon Kubricht has attempted a run for village government before — in 2011 he ran for village commissioner, although his petitions did not survive a signature challenge by Elsie Radtke, the mother of current Village Commissioner Thomas Mannix. Mannix has said he will not seek re-election.

“I think the biggest challenge the village is facing is bringing everybody back together again,” Kubricht said. “This whole video gaming thing has divided the village tremendously. Both sides need to find a happy middle ground. Even in the last two elections we’ve seen the division has been pretty extreme, pretty strong.”

Kubricht disapproves of the way the Forest Park Village Council brought video gaming into town, legalizing the practice after a majority of residents voted against it in a non-binding referendum and through a survey on a water bill.

“I do have an issue with that process and that’s why I voted Yes” to prohibit video gaming, he said.

In 2009, he also sued the village, accusing officials of illegally denying requests for records filed under the Freedom of Information Act. In that case, a judge ruled in the village’s favor.

After losing his chance to run for village commissioner in 2011, he said he helped Hoskins campaign for commissioner, and then for state representative in 2012. Kubricht believes Hoskins is the right person to move the village forward, saying he supports a more transparent and responsive village government, as well as a long-term economic plan.

“We need a comprehensive budget that goes out five or 10 years,” he said. “I really believe any community with the amount of revenue and income that we have needs to use it wisely and really map out areas that we could cut costs, save money and build up better reserves.”

He believes the yearly budget process should be done at a time when residents can attend the meeting, so their feedback and perspective can be noted as the village plans its budget. If elected, Kubricht said he would also aim to post the village council’s twice-monthly agendas a week in advance, rather than just the 48 hours required by law. A local property investor, he also owns an imported jewelry store in Chicago, and pointed to his experience working with business partners as an asset.

“I’ll listen. I’m very respectful of other people’s viewpoints,” he said. “Even if they don’t agree with my own, I’m there to do

not necessarily what I want all the time, but what I hear people in this community asking to be done.”

Julianne Bonwit Pointing to her experience as a social worker, Julianne Bonwit said, “I feel like I have pretty strong communication skills.

I think that can really help in building up some relationships throughout the different departments in the village.”

Once the debate on video gaming is resolved, she believes there will be a need for leaders who are strong relationship-builders to help bridge the gap in town. She noted she was able to bridge the gap between District 91 schools — Bonwit has served on the Citizens Advisory Council’s parent interest group — and village, after she successfully campaigned to get a stop sign installed near Garfield Elementary School, at the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Hannah Avenue. This experience inspired her to get more involved with local politics.

“I’m a mom and a social worker,” she said, “and I think those two things are all about, again, relationship building and consensus forming. I’m very solution-focused.”

Bonwit appreciates that Hoskins has previously served as a village commissioner, understands village processes for getting things done and knows employees at village hall. During the nine years she’s lived in the village, she finds it disheartening to see Commissioner Rachell Entler as the only woman on the board.

“I think that is a huge disadvantage,” Bonwit said. “I think it would be great to have an equal board of men and women. It would be great if we could have more people of color on our board, Spanish-speaking people on our board, I think we need more inclusion.”

She added that she is highly motivated by the women’s movement. “It’s easy to do the marches and maybe sit and call people but the harder [thing] is to actually do the work.

I think it’s time for all of us to step up and take responsibility and I want to do that.”

Jessica Voogd A buyer and set director for various TV shows and movies, Jessica Voogd likewise believes the community would be stronger if the village, Park District of Forest Park and schools worked together.

“The more the community is involved, the better and stronger we all are. I think involving them and listening to them is definitely a key step,” she said. “I think we can deal with anything if we’re listening to each

other, supporting each other and working together.”

Voogd said she felt inspired to run for village commissioner after watching how the current village council mishandled the video gaming debate.

“I feel like that was something where if we listened to the citizens, and put it to a vote earlier, maybe it wouldn’t have gotten so divisive,” she said.

Voogd volunteered with Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming, a ballot initiative committee that supported a referendum on the practice in town.

She wants to see a more approachable and responsive village council, and more work done in the area of economic development.

Before she moved to the village in 2015, she would frequently travel from her home in Chicago to go shopping at Forest Park’s antique shops.

“It’s just such a charming, great town; it’s just figuring out ways to promote that,” she said.

Naming the village’s $1.9 million projected budget shortfall as the greatest challenge the village faces, Mark Boroughf said increased transparency in the village’s bidding process and how officials award contracts would reduce expenses.

“We’ve got some big budget challenges ahead, a multimillion-dollar deficit. You can’t do that too many years in a row where you’re going to survive,” he said. “So the timing certainly is right to have a critical eye on how the government’s running fiscally.”

As an asset to the post, he pointed to his experience as owner of the Roselle-based Printing Plus firm, where he said he negotiates with vendors, builds consensus with company stakeholders, and keeps a keen eye on contracts. Before his family started Printing Plus, his grandfather opened Rex Paint & Wallpaper Co., now the site of another paint shop on Madison Street. Boroughf added that he served as president of his condominium association in Chicago for 10 years, where he shepherded owners through bankruptcy on the part of the developer, assumption of building ownership by the residents, and a $1.1 million renovation of the property.

He, too, felt motivated to run for the post after watching how the village handled the video gaming debate.

A former village commissioner, Harris challenged Calderone in the 2015 mayoral race and lost by about 115 votes, according to the Cook County Clerk.

None of the other prospective candidates responded to interview requests about their intentions for the upcoming election.

Village Pilates offers heart disease education Healthy eating, high intensity classes, CPR training and more this month

Village Pilates is dedicating the month of November to heart disease education as part of the studio’s new nonprofit fitness and education series, which offers monthly donation-based classes focused on a specific nonprofit or health issue.

The cause is close to owner Regan Hoerster’s heart, as she lost her father to heart disease. This past summer, she experienced another scare as her brother, Oak Park and River Forest High School varsity football coach John Hoerster suffered a heart attack that resulted in a triple bypass. Their afflictions were a massive wakeup call for Hoerster.

“After my brother’s heart attack, I realized I need to be proactive and advocate for medical screening. I want to get the message out about CPR,” she said.

For the month of November, the studio will offer a holistic lifestyle change program, including healthy eating and nutritional coaching, high-intensity Pilates classes to increase cardiovascular work, and CPR training. The Forest Park Fire Department will be leading a CPR workshop at the studio.

“Our studio is offering a program to provide guidance so people can actually make the lifestyle changes necessary to live a heart-healthy life and maintain a healthy weight. This isn’t about diet and deprivation; it’s about lifestyle changes,” Hoerster said.

The changes in the studio’s offerings reflect a shift in Hoerster’s personal wellness journey, which began after the birth of her

“My energy was low and I felt lethargic; I realized I needed to prioritize my health in a different way,” she said.

And so she did. She turned up the temperature during her personal Pilates practice for a more intense cardiovascular workout and switched to clean eating.

“My energy was higher immediately,” she said.

Hoerster originally discovered Pilates as a way to help her connect her mind and body while in graduate school, where she was

studying to be a social worker. Her passion for Pilates quickly grew to realization that the practice, rather than social work, was her life’s path. Hoerster subsequently went through teacher training and opened Village Pilates in Oak Park in 2003 before opening the Forest Park location five years ago.

Tucked away in a nook right off Madison Street, the door of the small storefront, which used to be an old theater building, opens up to a peaceful urban escape with a loft-like, naturally lit studio. The space contains two large rooms designated for both

reformer Pilates (with machines) and mat classes (sans machines). A seating area complete with a couch and tea station sends the message that the studio is for more than just fitness: it’s for community.

Pilates activates parts of the body, known as slow twitch muscles, that don’t usually get activated. Every movement in Pilates eccentrically activates the body, meaning the muscles are both stretched and activated simultaneously.

“It’s the type of control you need if you fall,” she said.

However, don’t let the subtle movements fool you. One reformer class will leave you sore for a week, even if you’re a regular weight-lifter.

Village Pilates will be adding new classes to accommodate the nonprofit fitness and education series, expanding the studio’s already abundant list of offerings. Students can expect more heated, high-intensity class offerings for heart health in November. Nonprofits to be highlighted by the studio in the coming months are Housing Forward and Sarah’s Inn. The studio currently has 10 teachers who teach more than 55 classes per week in both classical Pilates, which is a technical practice, along with more contemporary “project” classes, which provide a more intense workout without requiring a foundation of classical Pilates. Oak Park and Forest Park residents may have noticed a woman walking around the two villages in recent week with an exceptionally large smile on her face – more noteworthy, perhaps, is the 40 pounds of electronic equipment strapped to her back.

“What is that thing?” people are constantly asking Austin resident Erin Bender as she walks around with a Google Trekker Street View backpack, capturing public spaces for the tech company.

“A lot of people ask you what it is, but a lot of people already know,” she said in a recent interview.

She makes $17.50 an hour walking around the city and its suburbs; she usu-

ally does about five miles a day, she said.

“It’s not bad. I walk all over Chicago,” she said. “I’ve been in Forest Park and Evanston. It just depends.”

Bender has been with Google for about two months now. She found the job on the temp staffing website Adecco.

She is equipped with the trekker backpack and given a digital map to follow.

The company gives her options for where she wants to walk on any given day, she said.

She noted that the backpack is equipped with cameras that give a 360-degree view of the area and one that points to the sky.

“They have cars, too …” she said, but added that she likes the pay for walking with the trekker and added, “I’m getting exercise.”

Prior to her gig with Google, Bender was working in the meat department at a

Jewel-Osco, she said.

A search of Adecco’s job-search website (www.adeccousa.com) revealed that the company is still searching for trekkers.

“Operators are given the task of going to public and private areas specified by the client or partner, specifically targeting paths, attractions and other points of interest in the given area,” the job description notes.

Trekkers must be able to carry 40 pounds of camera equipment on their back and be on their feet for most of the day, according to the job posting.

Among other requirements, employees “must be able to deal with the public in a calm and rational manner.”
