ith the Cook County Clerk’s Office accepting applications for prospective candidates for the April 4 school board elections through Dec. 19, eight people on Monday officially threw their hats into the ring for seats on the Proviso Township High Schools Board of Education. With several days left for election petitions, it is already the two sides representing personal and operational difference on the existing board are already evident, with clear candidates for next spring’s election. As of Dec. 13, the following District 209 candidates (barring petition challenges) are signed up to run for election for a full, 4-year school board term (in alphabetical order): ■ Daniel Adams (incumbent) ■ Rodney Alexander ■ Brian Cross (incumbent) ■ Amanda Grant ■ Teresa McKelvy (incumbent) ■ Arbdella “Della” Patterson ■ Samuel Valtierrez ■ Jacqueline Walton The current board members with Forest Park ties, Claudia Medina, Ned Wagner and Theresa Kelly are not up for re-election until April 2019, but they will be backing four new individuals in alignment with their 209 Together coalition to bring change for all Proviso students, with the goal of ridding what they consider excessive political influence on the D209 school board. According to Medina, candidates and political newcomers Rodney Alexander, Amanda Grant, Della Patterson and Samuel Valtierrez are planning to

My Christmas village bears a resemblance

ike many of you, I have a holiday tradition of setting up a Christmas village. It’s an idyllic place that, in some ways, bears a resemblance to Forest Park. This year I decided to make it a more realistic representation of our village. For example, I usually blanket my village with fresh-fallen snow. This year, I cleared the sidewalks with tiny bobcats and plowed the streets curb-to-curb. I even threw down a little rock salt. Then I added a thin layer of fast food containers, beer bottles and plastic grocery bags atop the snow, since that’s what I wake up to every morning. I then added tiny antivideo gambling signs and “I Love Forest Park” signs to the snow-covered lawns. Just for fun, I put one of each on somebody’s property. My village normally has separate “country” and “city” sections. The lighthouse, windmill, farm etc. are on one side. The shops, post office and firehouse are on the other. But why not imitate Forest Park’s zoning laws and put the humble farmhouse across the street from the glitzy ice-skating rink? This rink is so upscale, the skaters can

actually skate. I mean, the stately couple used to skate. Apparently they’re too old to move anymore. Now, they stand in the middle of the rink, while the young mother whizzes around them pushing her kid in a stroller that’s fitted with skates. There’s also a low-tech rink on the other side of town — a mirror actually — where the three skaters are stuck. This rink had been lit by one of my gas streetlights but I replaced all of them with LED lights to make the village brighter and more energy efficient. They shine on the village’s six businesses. Two of these are Irish pubs: a small one that could pass for Duffy’s and a two-story ale house the size of Doc Ryan’s. There are two music stores, just like Kagan & Gaines and American Music World. There’s also an independent bookstore as a stand-in for Centuries & Sleuths. There’s a shop with a fulltime butcher, like Ed’s Way. There’s a Christmas tree lot, like the one next to Portillo’s. I don’t see how they can stay in business, now that they’ve lost their two longtime customers. A young couple used to haul away a fresh tree every year but they suffered a

tragic fall. Losing them reduced the village’s population from 20 to 18. Of these inhabitants, two are altar boys, seven are skaters (if you count the baby). Two are dads. One dad builds a snowman with his two boys. The other dad is less active. He sits on a bench, next to his sedentary son, who is reading a book. There are no less than four carolers. I wish there were more carolers in Forest Park. I also wish that all of my townspeople weren’t white. There’s apparently no crime in my village, because there’s no police station. There’s also no traffic. I think it’s because I added the Blue Line and Green Line trains this year. The trains even make tape-recorded announcements, like “Doors open on your left at Harlem,” “Doors closing,” and the ever-popular “This is Forest Park, as far as this train goes. All passengers must leave the train.” There’s only one house in my village. It’s looking kind of sad, so this year I put a dumpster in front of it. There’s a cathedral that dominates downtown, like St. John’s and a small chapel that could be a stand-in for St. Paul’s. There’s also a baby lying in a manger. What’s he doing there? ■ John Rice is a columnist/private detec-

tive, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. He thoroughly enjoys life in the village and still gets a thrill smelling Red Hots, watching softball and strolling through cemeteries.

Silverland holds grand reopening to mark expansion Bakery/café completes renovation on former site of Calcagno’s By JOHN RICE Contributing Reporter

Silverland Bakery Cafe just completed a major renovation of its facility at 439 Desplaines Ave. Longtime customers were worried that Silverland might be moving when actually it was becoming bigger. “People were in a panic that Silverland’s was closing,” said sales director Peter Wodek. “This place has a real cult following. Everyone knows Silverland.” To celebrate the completion of the sixmonth project, Silverland hosted a Grand Reopening, Dec. 9-10. Guests were served free samples of Silverland’s famous treats, along with complimentary coffee and champagne. Thirty percent of the sales were donated to Athena’s Silverland Desserts Fund for Women and Girls. The bakery’s famous brownies are wellknown in faraway places like Dubai but the company still has that down-home feeling of a family business. The renovation expanded the bakery’s production space, while up-

They even changed the company’s logo from purple, green and silver to harvest gold and light brown. This softening of the palette reflects Silverland’s most recent product line, which includes nine kinds of natural food bars,

vegan brownies, flourless bars and sugarfree bars. “We’re trying to stay current,” Wodek said, “although we’re still using the same recipes from 35 years ago.” Sometimes these natural food bars outsell their gourmet brownies, which are their high-end product. “They’re an indulgence, a treat,” Wodek said. “People give them as gifts. We get a lot of walk-in traffic during the holidays.” The café does a steady business but 95 percent of Silverland’s sales are wholesale. They sell to grocery chains and shops like Argo Tea. “We work with Whole Foods all over the U.S.,” Wodek added. “The standards are so high at Whole Foods.” When he pitches their products to other retailers, being accepted by Whole Foods says it all. It seems fitting that grocers are stocking Silverland’s baked goods when one considers that its Forest Park location was formerly Calcagno’s Grocery Store. The bakery, though, began life inside the former Zenith See SILVERLAND on page 10

REV. WINSTON

Following his Tuskegee heroes from page 1 fice at Living Word. According to the Office of the Secretary of the Army, the medal is awarded “to any person … who has distinguished himself or herself by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.” Winston is proud of that recognition of the service he gave his country. But equally important, he is proud to be connected to a storied group called the Tuskegee Airmen,

The Tuskegee Airmen began as an experiment in 1941, during World War II. Jim Crow Laws were still in effect in many states and the U.S. Armed Forces were still segregated. Black men had been excluded from flying aircraft in what was then the Army Air Corps, but the War Dept. needed pilots.

The Tuskegee Airmen were an experiment to see if “negroes” were mentally fit to fly airplanes. The group of African Americans who assembled at Moton Field in the city of Tuskegee, Alabama not only proved themselves capable but served with distinction in World War II. The last flyer in that group recently died in his 90s. Winston was a boy growing up in Tuskegee at that time and attended the Tuskegee University lab school, called the Chambliss Children’s House, with many of the children of the African American men in training. His father was a medical technologist at the large Veterans Hospital in town. He remembers his dad taking him out to Moton Field on the weekends to watch the pilots training to fly. Chappie James, who eventually became the first black four-star general, was part of that pioneering group, and his daughter Denise was a classmate of Winston in the second grade. It was only natural, therefore, for Winston to follow in the footsteps of these role models. He joined the ROTC program as a student at Tuskegee University and flew jet fighter-bombers for the Air Force during the Vietnam War. “That experience,” said Living Word’s pastor, “set the course for the rest of my life. It’s through the discipline, the excellence and the proficiency required to be a pilot that I went on to win sales awards at IBM and then to be pastor of Living Word. In ministry, all of what I learned in the Air Force gets applied because you have to plan your mission and set goals in ministry as well as in the military. Teamwork, he said, was one of the most important lessons he learned as a pilot. The two-man crew in the F4 requires teamwork in itself, but Winston listed all the people he depended on to successfully complete his missions: people to take care of his helmet and flight gear, share intelligence with him before

the flight, take care of the airplane, make repairs if something malfunctioned, download the onboard cameras, and debrief him. He bombed targets such as bridges and roads in an attempt to prevent the North Vietnamese from getting troops and supplies into the South. Sometimes he would fly support for B52 bomb-ers, but his favorite missions were when he was called to aid servicemen who were caught in ‘situations.’ “We would fly mismis sions,” he recalled, “where we would have to liberate our guys by keeping the bad guys away until the ‘Jolly Greens’ would come in and pick them up.” Now Winston is the pastor of a megachurch, but in his flying days he was not close to God. He said that as a child he had gone to church but later got away from it. Like a lot of people in the military he referred to God as the man upstairs but didn’t have the kind of relationship that he developed following a profound religious experience while working in sales with IBM years later. What lessons could society learn from what he experienced in the military? “What we have today is a blaming society,” he replied. “When I came out of the

military, I was disciplined, and I see people now who look like me, but they don’t seem to value what they have. In the Air Force, I put my life on the line and saw how a person could get shot down. “Today it’s almost like people have removed God from the picture. They say they make their own decisions and make their own standards and it’s led to anarchy. It’s caused a lot by the breakdown of the fam family. There’s not this disci discipline that comes from the home, and you have kids raising kids — especially in the black community.” What he preaches at Living Word and what has attracted a large following of people is an emphasis on fundamentals: committed marriages, stressing morality and discipline in the home, going to church every Sunday, and replacing a feeling of entitlement with a sense that “I am responsible for my own life.” “Everybody has potential,” Winston said, “and the way potential is manifested is through work and through faith. We have to realize that wherever we are now, there’s more that’s in us. We have to keep going. I want encourage people not to stop where they are now.”

Let It Snow We’ll Get the Job Done! Remember two Sundays ago, when about a half-foot of snow came down? (Much like this past Sunday!) That night, shortly after 10 o’clock, one of our subcontractors needed “to call it a night” without getting to one of our clients, a Catholic grade school. Within 20 minutes, Scott my dad had begun McAdam Jr. an impromptu, grueling four-hour shift that included shoveling nine sets of stairs totaling 120 steps as I worked on another snow removal job. A short time later, students and staff—who had been sleeping as we got the job done—safely got their week started. When snow comes, we can’t just let it pile up. It’s an emergency service that people have entrusted us to deal with professionally—and that includes meeting certain deadlines. Convenience isn’t what has enabled us, since 1980, to build a snow removal and management practice across more than 400 square miles of Chicagoland. In fact, the more stressful the scenario, the greater the opportunity to come through for our clients. So, when Monday afternoon rolled around, you can imagine how we felt when the school’s maintenance director let us know what he thought of our effort: “It looks great!”

Bags of cash taken in Roosevelt Road business break-in Forest Park police responded to a business in the 7400 block of Roosevelt Road on the morning of Dec. 11 after an employee called police to report that someone had broken into the business earlier that day and stole two bags of cash from a locked basement office. According to police, surveillance camera video showed an unknown man entering the business at 5:35 a.m. with a key and typing in a code to disarm the alarm system. The offender then went downstairs and pried open a padlock securing the office door. The offender then removed two bank bags containing an undisclosed amount of cash before walking out the front door and leaving the area northbound. The offender did not bother taking anything from the two cash registers or anything else of value from the business. Police are continuing to investigate the burglary.

Suspected snowblower thieves nabbed Police arrested a 43-year-old man and a 47-year-old man, both of Chicago, for theft after they reportedly walked away with a pair of snowblowers from Moran’s Garage, 157 Desplaines Ave., on Dec. 11 about 12:45 a.m. A witness told police he observed two subjects, a man and a woman, walking onto the garage property and pushing away two snowblowers. They were last seen northbound on Desplaines Avenue. Police detained the subjects, who possessed two snowblowers, in the 7500 block of Dixon Street. One of the subjects, the 47-year-old, was a man dressed as a woman. Both men were charged with misdemeanor theft.

lice arrived there were no suspects in the area. Police observed broken windows at the basement level and on a second-floor rear porch, but entry appeared to have been gained. Officers recovered a shovel and a candle, which police believed were used to break the glass, and a glove that was found in the alley for evidence. ■■Police responded to a residence in the 100 block of Brown Avenue after a resident called to report that, during the overnight hours of Dec. 3-4, someone pried open the side service door to her garage to gain entry. Nothing of value appeared to be missing from the garage, according to the police report, but the service door and door frame were damaged.

Not bringing it back A manager at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, 7630 Roosevelt Road, contacted police on Dec. 6 to report that a customer had rented a car and was refusing to return it. The alleged offender reportedly rented the vehicle on Nov. 7 and was slated to return it on Nov. 14. But the vehicle was never returned and its location was unknown. The business’ corporate office was able to contact the person who rented the vehicle and told him he had to return it. However, the man reportedly told the company’s representative that he wouldn’t be doing that. Police entered the vehicle into the Law Enforcement Agency Data System as stolen.

Police arrest driver in funeral procession Forest Park police charged a 23-year-old Chicago man with reckless driving after he allegedly swerved his 2000 Ford Contour, which was part of a funeral procession, from lane to lane and into oncoming traffic while southbound in the 700 block of Desplaines Avenue on Dec. 6 around 12:37 p.m. Many cars from the procession reportedly took over all lanes of traffic as it passed west through Oak Park on Jackson Boulevard into Forest Park. A police officer apprehended the driver of the Ford at Forest Home Cemetery and transported him to the police station for processing. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Dec. 5-11, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Medina says the four candidates, who have either had children in the district or are planning on sending their children to Proviso schools within the next few years, are pleased with her slate’s work toward enacting positive changes district-wide. “In a year and a half, it is unfathomable that we have been able to drive [this] much change,” she said. “These are parents and engaged community members who are thrilled with what has been happening with Proviso and want to continue driving all of the reforms, platforms, transformations, curriculum and direction for the district that has been brought about ever since we got elected.” Wagner said that, over all, he has been pleased with his experience on the school board and, like Medina, is glad to see fresh faces set on campaigning on behalf of the community and in alignment with 209 Together’s goals. “The true work of being on the board of education is a wonderful experience,” Wagner said. “One of the things that has been really amazing about being on the board is that we’re out in the community, we’re meeting people, and then people see change is really possible and actually happening. There’s a transformation in our school district going on.” However, Wagner reiterated that, while he and his former campaign partners continue to work together with community outreach and frequently voting opposite the current

board majority, 209 Together is not an entity separate from the district. “I want to make clear that we’re not a po-

litical party,” he said. Medina has high hopes for Alexander, Grant, Patterson and Valtierrez, saying

they have been closely following 209 Together’s mission to strive for district excellence and would be great assets to the district. “These are all people who know what’s going on, have been following us for a few years and want to come on board to continue driving transformation for Proviso because it will change the greater community,” she said. Aside from Adams, Cross and McKelvy, board member Kevin McDermott is also up for re-election in April. However, as of press time, he has not submitted petitions to campaign to keep his seat. Adams, Cross, McKelvy and McDermott did not respond to the Forest Park Review’s requests for comment.

plant at Dickens & Austin in Chicago before moving to Desplaines Avenue in 1994. “We still get customers who came to our Chicago facility,” Wodek noted. The founder and driving force behind Silverland is Athena Uslander. She emigrated from her native Iran to study engineering at Southern Illinois University. She was planning a career in bridge-building when she befriended a fellow student named Lisa Silverman. Silverman had an old family recipe for brownies and the students combined their last names to launch Athena’s Silverland Desserts. “Athena decided she didn’t want to build bridges,” Wodek said. “She wanted to make double chocolate brownies.”

The bakery is convenient to U s l a n d e r ’s River Forest home and she goes there daily to work on product development. “She mixes and matches in the kitchen and tweaks her personal recipes,” Wodek explained. The bakery offers 15 kinds of brownies, eight varieties of bakery bars and 11 kinds of classic cookies. The 20-person company produces 50,000 brownies a week. These brownies have been praised by industry organizations and national publications. However, Uslander also became famous for an entirely different product. In 2005, she entered a modeling contest on a lark and was chosen to be the model and spokesperson for Dove’s Pro-Age products for women over 50. Uslander’s exotic looks appealed to many different cultures. “There were huge billboards of her in South America,” Wodek recalled. Uslander used the money she earned from the advertising campaign to launch her charitable fund. She doesn’t attach much importance to the fame she enjoyed. She’s much prouder of heading a company that has provided a good living to her employees. To keep her company competitive, she launched the makeover of its facility. “This remodeling is huge,” Wodek said. “It’s a big commitment to the community of Forest Park.” The work included building a new wall to expand the production area, installing new tile, a new counter and a chalkboard wall, where the menu can be easily changed. “We are at the top of the industry with safety codes,” Wodek said, noting that Silverland has never had a recall in its 35-year history. Uslander wanted to reward her loyal customers at the Grand Reopening. “We are looking forward to re-introducing our café to the community with our customer’s longtime favorites,” Uslander said. “Welcome and enjoy!”

A home with a past … and a future 807 N. Kenilworth provides plenty of detail to evoke a bygone era By LACEY SIKORA

R

Contributing Reporter

eportedly, today’s young generation is waiting longer than their predecessors to buy their first homes, and Fortune Magazine reports that homeownership rates have hit record lows. The delay among millennials could be due to a variety of reasons: increasing home prices and stagnant wages, couples waiting longer to get married, student loan debt? The current state of homeownership appears to bear little resemblance to how it was over a century ago. In Oak Park, for instance, a home for sale on Kenilworth Avenue reflects a simpler time, when mortgage rates and student loans played no role in the decision about when and where to purchase a home.

Family ties Built in 1899 for stone mason F.W. Vierow, the Victorian-style home at 807 N. Kenilworth started out as family affair. F.W.’s brother, E.R., built a similar house on the next block at 730 N. Kenilworth. Realtor Ann Keeney of Baird & Warner, who is listing 807 N. Kenilworth for the owners, points out the parallels: “If you look at 730, it’s actually very similar to this house in terms of construction,” she said.

Courtesy of VHT STUDIOS

EVOCATIVE: The Vierow house dates back to 1899 and its detailing evokes a simpler time. Not only was it common for adult siblings to live close together, but it was also regular practice for children to remain in close proximity to their parents after marriage. When F.W.’s children married in the early 1900s, he took steps to make sure his children would always be close to home: he gifted each of them with a home adjacent to his own. No mortgage, no house hunting and no worrying about your children living too far away. Vierow built three houses on Thomas

Street and on Kenilworth Avenue to the south of his own house for his three daughters, and he built a home north of his house on Kenilworth for his son. He used his stone masonry expertise to construct the brick and stone houses, and took stones from the wall that originally surrounded his home to construct the façade of the house immediately to the south. Anticipating the importance of parking in Oak Park, he also constructed two fourcar garages for the family to share.

Modern updates Times have changed, and the five homes have long been separated and owned by different families. The current owners raised their family in the five-bedroom house and are listing the house with Keeney for $769,000. The owners made many updates to the home, including an addition that includes See KENILWORTH on page B5

KENILWORTH

From the 19th to the 21st centuries from page B1 a remodeled kitchen and a renovated secondfloor bathroom. The Jean Stoffer-designed kitchen includes all of the modern conveniences for today’s cooking-obsessed families — in the guise of a grand kitchen from an earlier era. Built-in Sub Zero refrigerator and freezers, as well as refrigerator and freezer drawers, are paneled to look like built-in cabinetry. A wall of cherry built-ins across from the island provides plenty of storage, as does hidden storage built into the walls. A farmhouse sink and striking copper range hood add to the Victorian charm. A Wolf range and Bosch dishwasher make cooking and cleanup for a family or guests less daunting. Stoffer replicated the turret on the front of the home in designing the rounded eat-in area of the kitchen. A curved, built-in bench covers the radiator, and a table was designed for the space. The coffered ceiling was modeled on the original coffered ceiling in the formal dining room. A newly constructed powder room and a new mudroom with a wine refrigerator and travertine flooring round out the addition on the first floor.

Historic charm While the modern updates make the home ready for today’s families, the original details that survive keep the Victorian charm alive throughout the house. In the large living room, a built-in window seat graces the turret wall. A wood-burning fireplace with original mantel warms the room, and pocket doors connect the living room to, or separate it from, the adjacent dining room. In the dining room, two original, built-in buffets offer plenty of storage options, and the buffet was custom-built to cover the radiator and offer more storage. A coffered ceiling features original light fixtures, and the walls above the wainscot still retain the original food-centered murals. A library at the front of the house has another original fireplace mantel and a gas fireplace. Throughout the first floor, the elaborate crown molding and original light fixtures add period charm to each room.

Upstairs and outside The second floor of the home has four bedrooms with a shared, newly-renovated bathroom with radiant-heated floors. The third floor allows room for a master suite with a sitting area in the turret of the house and a

RETAINING AND UPGRADING: Like many of Oak Park’s homes, this one has retained details from the past while adding modern amenities. full bathroom. The outside of the house mingles both old and new to create a quintessential Oak Park modernized period piece. The slate roof and

copper finial cap on the turret speak to a bygone era. The rear wrap-around deck and the screened front porch allow plenty of options to sit outside and enjoy the neighborhood.

This is no longer the era when a father gives his four children homes as wedding gifts, but the charm of an older home and a tree-lined block in Oak Park have timeless appeal.

Grove Apartments: The skeptics had it wrong

I

t is now three years since Grove Apartments — a 51-unit affordable apartment building — opened at the corner of Grove Avenue and Madison in the Village of Oak Park. An unsightly, boarded-up two-story building was converted into an inviting four-story brick structure that helps revitalize a portion of Madison Street ripe for change. The community is attracted to the first floor commercial space that houses Sugar Beet Food Coop, a high-quality grocery store and café that occupies the first-floor Madison frontage of this structure. In September 2016, this co-op celebrated its one-year anniversary of providing fresh, high-quality groceries to local residents. Sugar Beet has now topped 1,500 owners; a clear indication the community has fully embraced their new local grocer. Beginning back in 2009, Interfaith Housing Development Corporation, a nonprofit affordable housing development company, in partnership with the Oak Park Housing Authority, faced its fair share of input and upfront opposition from well-organized neighbors during the rezoning process. Concerns voiced both before the Oak Park Plan Commission and the Village Board of Trustees included inadequate parking, the population targeted, lack of demand for new commercial space, and a widespread impression that property values would decrease in

Submitted by Nicol Zeller

AFFORDABLE AND NICER-LOOKING: The Interfaith Housing Development Corp. proved the naysayers wrong. They restored a noteworthy building and brought beneficial retail to the ground floor. Below left, what the building looked like previously. the neighborhood. None of those concerns has materialized. Parking. This has not been an issue. Only one-third of 51 households own cars, easily fitting into the adjacent parking lot, with many others taking advantage of the ample public transportation options in the immediate area. Residents and Sugar Beet shoppers can park in the lot when the store is open, but only residents can park in the lot after 9 p.m. and prior to 7 a.m. Employees of the two entities park in nine spaces off the alley.

Target Population. The building is fully occupied, with the majority of current residents being original tenants at the building’s opening in October 2013. As promised, over 70 percent of the current residents either lived and/or worked in the village of Oak Park prior to occupancy. None of the horror stories told six years ago has materialized. As a fully accessible building with an elevator, the building has successfully served many persons who could not live in the vintage walk-up apartments that are common in the village. Commercial Demand. Sugar Beet has occupied the entire commercial space after a very tasteful buildout. High-quality retail has returned to what previously was a desolate section of Madison Street. Decreased Property Values. The beauty of the building speaks for itself. Property values are enhanced with the addition of this architectural gem. Speaking of beauty, Grove Apartments, designed by Weese Langley Weese Architects, received the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design at the 2015 Annual Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards. The original 1927-era building, a Cadillac and La Salle car dealership, conceived by American master of industrial design Albert Kahn, featured only two floors. In 1981, the building was converted to a service center for a cable TV company by covering the red brick in faux stucco panels.

Dennis Langley, the architect chosen by Interfaith, was pleasantly surprised to uncover much of the original façade, albeit damaged. He figured out a way to repair the façade while adding two additional compatible floors with special-order brick, Indiana limestone per the original plans, and architectural concrete restoration, all matching and preserving Kahn’s original building. The naysayers clearly had it all wrong! A high-income community such as Oak Park benefits from economic diversity that results from affordable housing. In fact, the village of Oak Park believes in this mission so much, they created and fostered the growth of two affordable housing entities like the Oak Park Housing Authority and the Oak Park Residence Corporation, which Interfaith was able to work with to bring this project to fruition. Quality retail space can prosper with the right tenant. Concerns about adequate parking do not need to doom new development. Interfaith Housing Development Corporation, which next year will celebrate 25 years, touts 16 successful affordable housing developments. Their approach to affordable housing — beautiful architecture, ample natural light, space, and air — has a proven track record in a wide variety of neighborhoods in metropolitan Chicago. For more information and to see other developments, visit IHDC.org. Perry Vietti is president of Interfaith Housing Development Corp.

The Most Wonderful Guide of The Year!

eason of Giving is a campaign organized by Wednesday Journal and the Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation to encourage local charitable giving during the holiday season. It has long been recognized that when we shop local, our money recirculates

Animal Care League No matter how long it takes, the Animal Care League keeps an adoptable animal until we find that right loving home. We take proactive approaches to animal care and adoption as well as preventative measures to help reduce the number of homeless animals in our communities. The Animal Care League provides medical treatment for over 1,000 animals each year ranging from routine vaccinations to emergency, life-saving surgery. Make a meaningful difference in the life of a homeless animal. Visit animalcareleague. org, where you can sign up to be a volunteer or donate. You can also donate your gently used items to the 2nd Chance shop, and attend one of many fun special events.

The Collaboration for Early Childhood The Collaboration for Early Childhood is your resource for early childhood information in Oak Park and River Forest. We provide the connections vital to every child’s opportunity for success in learning and in life. We work with more than 60 organizations so that parents and their children receive critical information and support services, children are screened for developmental delays, teachers in child care centers, preschools and family child care homes provide high quality programs and our most vulnerable children and their families experience a strong web of support. through the local economy reaping dividends for the entire community. The same is true for charitable giving. When you donate to local nonprofits, your money goes to work in your own neighborhood. Your donations feed local families, offer safety and learning to local children, and enrich the beauty and

potential through learning in an environment that strengthens the students, the tutors, and the community. The program’s emphasis is on reading as a means to academic success and the development of mentoring relationships between caring adults and youth. Tutors receive training and ongoing support. Tutoring space is donated by First United Church of Oak Park and Pine Avenue Church. To volunteer or to donate, please contact Kara Kalnitz at 773-378-5530 and visit clustertutoring.org.

Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation The Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation encourages giving locally, providing donors with many ways to contribute to the sustainability and vibrancy of Oak Park and River Forest. We manage scholarships for students and provide enrichment grants for young people. We make grants to local nonprofit organizations, provide Impact Excellence seminars for them as well as manage many of their agency funds. We accept large gifts and small gifts. We work with donors to match their philanthropic interests with needs. We create spaces for donors to collectively give for impact through our Women Leaders in Philanthropy, Entrepreneur Leaders in Philanthropy and NextGen Leaders in Philanthropy Giving Groups. All of this is possible thanks to generous and thoughtful donors who value our community. www.oprfcf.org www.facebook.org/OPRFCF Twitter: community@oprfcf 708-848-1560 1049 Lake Street, Suite 204, Oak Park, IL 60301 Donate on line at: http://tinyurl.com/kf2rcnn

Hephzibah Children’s Association was founded in 1897. We serve more than 1,000 children and families each year through innovative, community-based programs. Hephzibah provides a Group Home for children who have been taken from their families due to profound abuse or neglect. Our skilled staff recruits and trains foster parents, and offers ongoing support to help all family members navigate challenges. Our after-school Day Care operates on a sliding scale to serve working parents in Oak Park, with programs based at each elementary school. To make a real difference in the lives of children and families, please donate today at hephzibahhome.org.

Housing Forward The mission of Housing Forward is to transition people from housing crisis to housing stability. By emphasizing prevention, supportive services, employment readiness and supportive housing, we are able to offer a comprehensive, long-term solution that moves clients into housing quickly and keeps them there. This housing-first approach to homelessness is more efficient, more fiscally responsible and less traumatic to clients who are typically facing extraordinary hardship. It is also beneficial to the communities being served who do not have to bear the costs of homelessness in the form of expanded social services, health care and public safety costs. Transforming lives

Each year, neighbors choosing to give locally are supporting the power to transform lives. Take, for example, the recent $500 gift to the Oak Park Public Library from the Schwab Charitable Fund that was earmarked for adult literacy in memory of a loyal library patron. Twenty-six new Main Library titles in the Rapid Reads Series now offer contemporary, entertaining plots and come with

tutor tools for testing comprehension and discussion. Adult Education Librarian Rashmi Swain was thrilled to be able to fulfill an Oak Park literacy volunteer’s request with the donated funds. “The new titles are perfect for instilling foundational reading skills, and for fostering a continued love of reading,” Swain said.

Pro Bono Network Access to justice should not depend upon one’s income. During this time of need, there are not enough lawyers to help people with human rights needs. These include safety from an abuser, adequate housing, and the ability to get a job. Pro Bono Network, a locally-grown and new kind of organization, has brought over 200 attorneys to pro bono work by making legal representation practical. As a result over 1000 clients have received legal aid services which often encompass human rights. Learn more at pro-bono-network.org. Donating will make a difference!

Since 1981, Sarah’s Inn has worked to improve the lives of those impacted by domestic violence and to break the cycle of violence for future generations. Our Intervention Program provides bi-lingual services for families affected by domestic violence in order to safely navigate crisis, effectively process trauma and ensure self-sufficiency. Our Training and Education Program creates a network of skilled bystanders to appropriately intervene as first responders and community advocates. Our Together Strong Project was created to prevent relationship violence by teaching youth about the impact of their choices, giving them the tools to lead healthy lives, and empowering them to make a difference in their community. We help you give back. How is up to you. “This is a great time for the entire community to invest in the Community Foundation.”--John & Linda Tibensky, donors

If you or your family has had a liquidity event or significant income this year, consider establishing a Donor Advised Fund with us right here in your community. We have the staff and experience to work with you to give locally and/or elsewhere around the country. A donor-advised fund, or DAF, allows donors to make a charitable contribution and receive a tax deduction this year and then recommend grants from the fund over time. Establishing a DAF with the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation in 2016 is a smart move. With uncertainty on the tax front – including potential limitations on the charitable contribution deduction – 2016 is an excellent year to give into a DAF, take the deduction this year, and continue to make meaningful contributions to organizations in future years. A donor-advised fund is like a charitable savings account: a donor contributes to the fund as frequently as they like and then recommends grants to their favorite charity when they are ready. While we can manage any size DAF over $10,000, DAF’s of $500,000+ can continue to be managed by your current Financial Advisor. Set up with us is easy and takes a minimum amount of your time. Don’t forget to sign up for those Community Center day trips

anta must have stopped by Ed’s Way last week and chose the most appealing dogs he could find to sit with him for a photo. Naturally, Tami Bennett’s Oddie and B.J. were chosen. (Your dog and my dog are just as charming, but let’s let Tami think hers won). It was Quinceñera Day for Corina Harnett last Monday. Her family celebrated on Sunday. Corina is a sophomore at Fenwick. The Harnetts don’t officially celebrate Quinceñera yet, but it’s catching on around town. The talented and lovely young ladies Freya Pang and Emmie Guo, 7 and 8, entertained at the 19th Century Club last Sunday. Their pictures appeared here last week. They will be competing in the Walgreens competition later this year. Also on

pianists, organists, and even full orchestras enhanced the movies, listen to some of the best composers for cinema, Max Steiner, Henry Mancini and more. On Jan. 22, Great Music of the Cinema can be seen and heard at the 19th Century Club at 3:30 p.m. Admission is $25 at the door. This is one part of a four part series, “Musical Journey.” Cookies and Cocoa at the 19th Century Club will be available on Dec. 17 from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Special guest of the day is Santa Himself. $5 per person/$20 per family of four. Bring your camera and take pictures. That’s at 178 Forest Avenue, phone 708-386-2729 or visit www.19thcenturyclub.com. As Karen Dylewski extends a Happy New Year wish to everyone along with Denise Murray and Mayor Calderone, Denise’s upcoming agenda of trips looks very exciting. There are a few seats still left on some of the excursions, but call or get over there soon. Those day trips go fast. The Friday movies are always a bargain (free, with popcorn). The first trip is the Mystery Trip, on Jan. 11. No trip on the 4th. Among the popular events are the “My Way” tribute to Frank Sinatra, “Sweeney Todd,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “My Fair Lady,” “South Pacific,” and on and on. Sign up before all the seats are taken. 708-771-7737. Happy birthday to Peyton Brown, Morgan Trage, Madison Hannah Pronek, Steven Rozmus, Adene Maugham, Harry Holmberg, Bill Hopp, Sue Stanton,

Forest Park Review, December 14, 2016

OPINION O U R

V I E W

Toward a Proviso majority

T

here can be a perception that the remaking of our Proviso Township High Schools is fully rooted in Forest Park. After all, the initial energy of the 209 Together movement began here two years back in grassroots gatherings of the frustrated and the hopeful. And two of the three candidates on that successful slate were Forest Parkers — Claudia Medina and Ned Wagner. The truth, though, is that the magic of 209 Together is in its wide net and inclusive orthodoxy. This is truly a Proviso Township-wide movement. It is truly a repudiation of the political shackles that have controlled this failing district over decades — a repudiation by families across this diverse district who simply want a public high school system that will educate our kids and care about our kids. The proof of all this is in the slate of candidates that 209 Together has assembled for the April school board election. There’s not a Forest Parker on it. Instead we have a slate that represents multiple towns in the Proviso coalition, that represents the diverse racial makeup of this fascinating school district. On election night two years back, the winners of the election had slammed the politically-backed slate that ran in opposition, that assumed the Proviso political machine would carry them to victory. But the victorious 209 Together slate — Medina, Wagner and incumbent Theresa Kelly — knew from the start that it would take this coming election to ensure a strong and stable board majority capable of institutionalizing the progressive change voters demanded. Now, in a strong minority following the feckless departure of Kevin McDermott from their alliance, the 209 Together candidates have accomplished great and remarkable things in a short time. They’ve done it by repeatedly, consciously, extending their connection to sincere parents and families across Proviso. They’ve known that there is a base of power and of votes in this district that gives not a fig about Democratic politics and rejects politics’ role in simply running the best high schools possible. We won’t know until next week’s petition-filing deadline exactly how this race will shape up. We do know that at least three of the four incumbents in the current majority are running for re-election, which means they’re doubling down on dubious achievement. We are ready for this campaign. We are ready for the great and powerful grassroots of Proviso to fully take back their high schools.

About those brownies Always great to see a longtime business reinvesting in our community. This week our John Rice reports on the upgrades at Silverland Bakery Café on Desplaines Avenue. The retail front of the business is how most Forest Parkers know this business. The selection of spectacular brownies, cookies and an expanding array of more modern treats, including natural food bars, vegan brownies, and flourless brownies, keep the locals happy. But as we report, 95 percent of Silverland’s business is out the back door to wholesale clients, including Whole Foods, Argo Tea and grocery chains. That would explain the 50,000 brownies baked up each week right there on Desplaines Avenue. Good for Silverland. Good for Forest Park.

I

My gift: The ultimate Christmas song

love Christmas music. I might love it too much, so I treat it like summer tomatoes: Gorge for the six weeks I can, and then pine for it longingly the other 46 weeks of the year. What I love about it is that it isn’t just me. Everyone loves Christmas music. Case in point: Eazy-E has a carol, and it’s great. (Filthy, but great.) So in the interest of embracing my favorite season for overdoing everything (and to get everyone’s mind off of the never-ending election from hell) I have decided to share my favorite Christmas Playlist with you people. Virtually all of these, should you not have the good fortune of bebe ing familiar already, can be sampled via YouTube. Track 1 “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews Every time I hear this song, I renew my surprise that it’s considered holiday music. Particularly this fantastic incarnation. Track 2 “Jingle Bells,” arranged by Duke ElEl lington, remixed by Robby Hardkiss I am a huge sucker for modern remixes of classic Christmas songs. Don’t know why. In that vein: Track 3 “The Nutcracker Suite,” Bas Kuts Breaks Mix Before I die, I need to see the Nutcracker re-set at a rave. Track 4 “Frosty the Snowman,” Fats Domino I love the way this begins, plus Fats always sounds like he’s having more fun than any other three singers combined. Track 5 “Blue Christmas,” Seymour Swine This song has sentimental significance, plus I can no longer hear any version of the song without stuttering when I sing along. Track 6 “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer” (Instrumental), from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation The music, just the music, free of context or comment, is still on my Ten Most Wanted Songs list. It would also make an excellent holiday ringtone.

Track 7 “Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum,” Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band The images this conjures of a vacationing Santa are unspeakably wonderful. Think jetskiing … throwing craps … walking on the beach, wearing sandals with socks, sweeping the sand with a metal detector … missing a 2-footer for par and hurling his putter into the ocean. … Track 8 “Dominic the Donkey,” Lou Monte The title really should be “Dominic the Christmas Earworm.” But there aren’t nearly enough Christmas songs that make you want to dance with your elbows out. Track 9 “Sleigh Ride,” the Ronettes Courtesy iTunes The Talented Mr. Roto has Dominic a nice compact description the Donkey of picks like this: “Just be because it’s obvious doesn’t mean it isn’t true.” Track 10 “Winter Wonderland,” Bootsy Collins You can think of at least three people you need to tell, immediately, that Bootsy Collins has a Christmas album, can you not? Track 11 “Mele Kalikimaka,” Bing Crosby I like to think about what Christmases were like when this tune was exotic. Track 12 “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band See Sleigh Ride. Track 13 “Jingle Bells,” Richard Cheese & Lounge Against The Machine Possibly the most inventive cover I have ever heard. Track 14 “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” Lynyrd Skynyrd I can’t quite work out which is more surprising, that Skynyrd has a Christmas album, or that it’s pretty good. Track 15 “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey I could not name another Mariah Carey song. But this song, once you get past the first 45 seconds, is a killer carol. (Side note: She’s hot, she can rock, and she’s been known to take the occasional sanitarium weekend. I just realized that Mariah Carey is the preppie Courtney Love.) Track 16 “Feliz Navidad,” Mr. Fred Any song that begins with the command “PAY ATTENTION!” is going to be a winner, really.

Removing barriers to living a better life Did you know an estimated 3.9 million people* in Illinois have a criminal record and routinely face formidable challenges and barriers in finding a job, enrolling in school, and securing decent and affordable housing? Responding to these challenges, Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) and the Living Word Christian Center (LWCC) Prison Ministry joined forces to co-sponsor the Know Your Rights Presentation & Job Fair, on Oct. 30. CGLA’s mission is: “to answer God’s call to seek justice and mercy for those living in poverty by providing legal services that strengthen lives, families, and communities.” During the presentation, CGLA legal experts answered job-seekers’ questions on background checks, handling interview questions, how to discuss sealed, expunged and active criminal records, as well as providing solutions and strategies for addressing and resolving the housing and education challenges associated with having a criminal record. Other issues that often affect a job-seeker with a criminal record are the emotional and social stresses resulting from repeated employment rejections and housing denials. Discouraged, many people simply give up their pursuit of a new chance at life. So what is the best way to handle discouragement? Minister Kevin Coleman and Pastor James Glaspie, who head the LWCC Prison Ministry, believe it’s important to constantly encourage and empower anyone who’s discouraged and disheartened with the message that “God is faithful and He is good. He’s not up in heaven waiting to strike you when you’re down.” “No matter what things look like today,” said Minister Coleman, “the biggest challenge is not to give in to despair and discouragement. Regardless of how many no’s you may encounter, stay encouraged and believe that your ‘yes’ is coming.” It’s a constant message of reassurance that Minister Coleman and Pastor Glaspie share with the men and women going through difficult times while searching for a job, finding housing or reconciling with their families. They also emphasize the importance of being around positive people and seeking support and counsel when it’s needed. “When Pastor Glaspie and I counsel ex-offenders or minister to those in correctional facilities, we always tell them, ‘God loves and cares for you and has plans for your future. Just believe in and rely on the power of God’s word and his love, to give you the strength to go through these trying times. Live by faith, and not by what it looks like right now,’” said Coleman. Some of the companies that participated in the recent job fair included: Men’s Ware-

house, Jiffy Lube, Elite Staffing and Home Depot. Job seekers were also given information about 600 soon-to-be-available jobs in Burr Ridge. The CGLA website is another resource for job-seekers with a criminal record. It lists many options on how to secure employment with a criminal record, including a “criminal records program” that assists individuals in clearing their arrest and conviction records through legal remedies, e.g. expungement, sealing, clemency, health-care waivers, certificate of good conduct, and certificates of relief from disability. THANK YOU Our most sincere thanks to the Kuratko-Nosek Funeral Home.

I’ve been to many Funeral Homes in my lifetime, but this was the best place ever. You were so professional and kind; the funeral home was so beautiful. Yesterday we buried my Aunt Esther, she was the last of my Aunts and Uncles who passed away, and now my Mom is the last one of nine brothers and sisters left. When that day comes for my Mom to join her family in heaven, I know what Funeral Home I will use. Thank you for your superior work of handling a very sad occasion in ourlives. It’s nice to know that in your time of need, you can count on people that you can go to, that are there for you, befriend you, and help take care of you and your loved ones. We would like to thank the amazing family that run the Kurtako-Nosek Funeral Home 2447 Des Plaines Ave., North Riverside, IL. They went above and beyond and helped us through our time of need for our beloved aunt, Esther Vasquez, who passed away Nov. 29, 2016. Their professionalism and courtesy is remarkable.

And at the Altenheim, you’ll be able to protect it with rent that is reasonable. But the Altenheim is so much more… it is surrounded with beautiful grounds and wildlife, seniors who look out for one another and apartment selections and activities to suit your lifestyle. You’ll be as happy as a lark here; come visit us to find out why.

Arborwood 2 bedroom apartments now available.

We encourage other families to consider them in their time of need.

From the Family of Esther Vasquez
