Gearing Up for #GivingTuesday Locally It’s a simple idea. Give and use social media to encourage others to give. Be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.
W
e have a day for giving thanks. We have black Friday and cyber Monday for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. The New York Times, National Public Radio, The Huffington Post and even Forbes are talking about Giving Tuesday. And no wonder. In 2013, over 10,000 organizations came together in 40+ countries with one common purpose: to help others and to incentivize ways to give back. This resulted in a 90% increase in online giving and engaged over 2 billion individuals on Twitter and 300 million on Facebook. It has sparked an online movement that encourages people to use the Internet and social media for good.
For this Giving Tuesday, December 2, 2014, the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation has partnered with the Wednesday Journal/ OakPark.com to create a local focus for Giving Tuesday to celebrate and encourage giving that supports organizations serving residents of Oak Park, River Forest and the surrounding area. The Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation & the Wednesday Journal/ OakPark.com, ask you to join us via social media to benefit local nonprofits. Here are forty funds managed by the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation that we are inviting you to help grow with your giving. Each fund has a web link and a QR(Quick Response) code that will bring you to an online donation page for that fund.
Try your browser or QR Code reader on a bunch of these to see what you can do with just a click or two to strengthen our community and help us improve the quality of life for every one locally.

A Note from the President & CEO of the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation A tapestry rug. A beautiful, colorful tapestry rug. A rug that provides warmth to toes when we walk, and beauty to eyes as we view it. The threads used to make the rug are colorful and strong. Each color provides its own part of the whole picture. If one color of thread fades, the whole picture is reduced. So, too, for our community nonprofit organizations. Each is a colorful thread that, when woven together, provide warmth and beauty to our vibrant community. As community members, we get to enhance their color. We get to make sure they are radiant, warm, and welcoming. On December 2 we have an opportunity to collectively enhance the colors within the tapestry of our community. Give. Give Big. Give Often. Give A Lot. --Kristin Carlson Vogen

Your Donation is Powerful! Hunger may seem far away to many of us in Oak Park and River Forest. But even here, people struggle with hunger. In Oak Park alone, it is estimated that over 6,000 individuals are “food insecure”—they do not know where their next meal is coming from. Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry serves 1500 local families each month. For every $1 you give, we are able to provide $10 worth of food to our clients. The pantry serves Oak Park, River Forest, Austin and the surrounding community (12 zip codes in all).
