‘Tis the season for hugs, hot cocoa, laughter and unique holiday gifts

M

y love for the holidays and snowy cold days has grown more and more over the past few years. I look forward to the serious chill of January that sets in after we have wished for white Christmases and feel that winter should move on. I wish for large snows where the city streets stop and life gets quiet everywhere. I look forward to spending the indoor time with my family. I wish for game nights and craft days and long long days of grey that can only be solved with a good book, good music and hot cocoa. The SARAH CORBIN holiday season Shopping Editor always promises to have a few of those days where nothing is on the agenda but cuddling on the couch and watching a good movie. We get a little stir crazy in our house for sure, and it isn’t always so perfect: siblings fight, spouses make noise when they eat

Staff

I hope our selection of gifts this year encourages you to enjoy your local shops, laugh through our wintry cabin fever, and enjoy a day or two of cuddling on the couch. Happy Holidays and Winter Days from all of us at the Wednesday Journal.

Housing Forward

The mission of Housing Forward is to transition people from housing crisis to housing stability. By emphasizing prevention, supportive services, employment readiness and supportive housing, we are able to offer a comprehensive, long-term solution that moves clients into housing quickly and keeps them there. This housing-first approach to homelessness is more efficient, more fiscally responsible and less traumatic to clients who are typically facing extraordinary hardship. It is also beneficial to the communities being served who do not have to bear the costs of homelessness in the form of expanded social services, health care and public safety costs. We offer an attractive return on your investment — measured in terms of human lives and futures. change their lives. Hope that the children we counsel can go on to break the cycle of violence in their family, and the children we teach in local schools can learn how to build healthy relationships. This message of hope is also the reason why long-time Oak Park resident, Dale Clarke, volunteers and supports Sarah’s Inn. “I first became involved with Sarah’s Inn because I was asked by a friend to help. I stayed involved because I was impressed with the positive energy and the feeling of hope that is so present in the staff and volunteers. Since being involved I have heard so many stories of lives that have been changed because of the work done by Sarah’s Inn. Domestic violence is a horrible reality in our community, and it is difficult as an individual to know what to do to make a difference. I support Sarah’s Inn because I know that it is going to help brave people as they make some of

I want to make a difference in the world by

How would you fill in the blank?

Y

our Community Foundation helps people who want to make a difference individually or collectively.

Individual giving: The Foundation offers many options for individual giving --one-time gifts that help; creating a fund that serves as a resource for children’s services, or the Arts, or Seniors, or some other area you wish to support; or working with you to design a bequest that continues your legacy of giving. We help groups to make a difference, too. This year two new giving group, Entrepreneur Leaders in Philanthropy and Next Gen Leaders in Philanthropy, will respectively invest in a BIG IDEA that positively transforms Oak Park and River Forest and award professional development mini-grants to emerging nonprofit leaders so they can take their community work to the next level. • 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of Women Leaders in Philanthropy, and as a group, they make a difference by supporting causes through consensus. • Even our local high school students are making a difference by participating in the Community Foundation’s Future Philanthropists Program. Last year’s seniors raised over $57,000 for the program’s endowment fund, exceeding their goal. The juniors awarded $25,000 to local youth programs from the same endowment fund. At the core of every individual decision, whether looking for the best way to make a contribution, choosing where to give now, planning for future giving or giving with a group, individuals are connecting with us at the Community Foundation for help in making a difference. We want giving locally to increase for all nonprofits serving Oak Park and River Forest. Our Live & Give Survey conducted earlier this year showed that local donors give twice the national average but that only 49% of those dollars are given locally. So, we have developed a new way to Give Locally during this Season of Giving. Watch for more about the Season of Giving here in the Wednesday Journal, on our website (www.oprfcf.org) and on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/OPRFCF).
