Former PNC Bank will be parish offices, meeting space

About a year ago, St. Mary Parish won approval from the village of Riverside to build a 2,700-squarefoot office, $2 million addition onto the east side of the church. But that plan has now been scrapped with the parish’s purchase last week of the former PNC Bank building at 40 E. Burlington St. in downtown Riverside.

The Rev. Thomas May, pastor of St. Mary’s, confirmed the parish closed on the roughly 36,000-squarefoot property Jan. 10. The sale price was not immediately available. PNC Bank had listed the property, which includes not only the building but 28 parking spaces, for $925,000.

Parish officials had planned to move ahead with the addition until they learned PNC was closing the branch and putting the property up for sale.

“When we got inside, it seemed that it would work well,” said May of the former bank branch. “It’s a large, blank canvas that we can do what we want to. It gives us more space for less money and more parking.”

D96 buys second home next to Ames School Property will allow architects more flexibility in designing addition

Riverside Elementary School District 96 is buying another house next to Ames School.

At a special meeting on Jan. 8, the District 96 school board unanimously approved an agreement to purchase the home at 443 Loudon Road, which is next to the Ames parking lot and just northwest of the school.

The purchase will give the district more space to work with as officials finalize plans for an addition to Ames School that is expected to be built in the summer of 2020.

The school district will pay $350,000 for the approximately 1,250-square-foot stucco bungalow, which sits on a 12,396 squarefoot-lot. The home will eventually be demolished to create more space for the addition, more green space and additional parking.

“This really opens that back side of the building,” said District 96 Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye.

In 2016, the district purchased and eventually demolished the home at 92 Repton

Road on the east side of Ames. The purchase of the Loudon Road lot will also make it easier for the school district to comply with zoning codes and as well as create additional playground space and outdoor learning space.

“We’re very appreciative of the opportunity to be able to acquire this additional property,” Ryan-Toye said. “We anticipate bringing our design ideas to the board and to the community at our Jan. 16 Board of Education meeting. We’re looking at design ideas that now incorporate this property that are going to allow us to have more flexibility in our considerations.”

The acquisition gives the district more space to work with as it considers plans for the addition. The school board is keen on not only building an addition to Ames but expanding green space at the school.

“It makes it easier to do what the district would like to do,” said District 96 school board President Jeff Miller. “Acquiring this lot gives the district the ability to put a more suitable addition on the back of Ames while still preserving most of the Repton lot for play space.”

Riverside president to host town hall meeting Seeks input on municipal facilities and more

Riverside Village President Ben Sells will hold the first of what he said he hopes will be several town hall meetings on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. in Room 4 of the Riverside Township Hall, 27 Riverside Road.

With the village completing a facilities study last year and obtaining rough concepts and estimates of cost, Sells said he wants to gauge what residents think the village ought to do with its existing facilities including the former Youth Center.

Sells will be joined at the town hall by Village Manager Jessica Frances.

However, the format of the meeting looks to be pretty open-ended, so that residents can drive the conversation, according to Sells.

“I don’t have an agenda for it at all,” he said in a phone interview last week. “It’s an opportunity for people to communicate with me and a way to talk about what people have on

their minds.”

Sells did specifically mention he hoped residents would provide feedback regarding the facilities assessment and recommendations for making over the municipal campus in and around the township hall.

The village spent $80,000 last year to have an architectural firm, Williams Architects, assess all of the village’s facilities, from its village offices inside the township hall, to its fire and police stations, the former Youth Center and old public works garage.

The firm concluded that the present facilities were inadequate, particularly the police and fire stations. The firm also rolled out a series of concepts for modernizing the municipal campus for between $24.5 and $28.5 million.

Renovating existing facilities without expanding them, according to Williams Architects, is estimated to cost between $6.7 and $9 million.

For the village of Riverside to raise that

kind of money would require voters to pass a referendum to issue construction bonds.

“We need to start having these conversations, because residents are the ones who need to decide what they want and pay for it,” Sells said.

In November 2018, the village board agreed that an ad hoc committee might be a good way to tackle the facilities issue, but formation of that committee is on hold at the moment, according to Sells.

A video tour giving residents a behind-thescenes look at the condition of municipal facilities is also in production and should be ready to roll out in early February, said Frances.

Another aspect of the facilities discussion could revolve around how Riverside addresses fire protection in the future. At present Riverside’s fire department is staffed on a paid-on-call basis, with Fire Chief Matthew Buckley as the department’s sole full-time employee.

Is there a possibility Riverside might partner with neighboring communities, such as North Riverside, on creating some sort of fire protection district? That question appears to be on the table for consideration and potentially could impact facilities decisions for Riverside.

At this time, however, it’s unclear if such an arrangement is possible or even desirable.

“We’re talking internally to see if it makes sense,” Sells said. “But we don’t know what it even means at this point. …

“If we were able to do it, that’d dramatically change our options with respect to the facilities study.”

Sells said he decided to give the town hall format a try given a renewed interest generally in government recently.

“With our new political reality, the idea of the town hall has gotten rejuvenated, so people might actually come,” Sells said. “Hopefully, it will be positive and productive.”

Merryl Brownlow, the highly regarded assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at Riverside Elementary School District 96, is leaving this summer to become superintendent at a small school district in the southwest suburbs.

On Jan. 9, the Palos Heights School District 128 Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Brownlow as its next superintendent. Brownlow will remain at District 96 until she starts her new job on July 1.

District 128 is a K-8 district that has four schools but only about 700 students, making it less than half the size of District 96. Since it is such a small district, it does not have an assistant superintendent position or curriculum director position, which made the job especially attractive to Brownlow.

“It has the opportunity to be the superintendent and still wear the curriculum director hat,” Brownlow said. “If I didn’t have that opportunity to really still be engaged in curriculum it probably wouldn’t have been something that would have been appealing to me.”

Brownlow earned a doctoral degree and her superintendent’s endorsement last year from National Louis University. Brownlow will have to reimburse District 96 about $28,000 in graduate school tuition payments that District 96 made for her over the past two years.

In an effort to keep Brownlow at District 96 for as long as possible, the district had a clause inserted into her contract that said that the district would pay for her tuition in a doctoral program, but that she would have to repay the district if she left within two years of receiving the degree.

Brownlow received a three-year contract from District 128 and will be paid $156,000 in her first year. She will also receive $6,100 in “transition pay” for 10 days of work for her new district before officially taking over in District 128. This work will be done while she is taking vacation days from District 96.

She is being paid $145,810 this year at District 96.

Brownlow came to District 96 in 2015 and has been a whirlwind of activity ever since she started on the job. She has been an energetic and collaborative leader who has

She led efforts to revamp the curriculum at District 96 in nearly all areas, increasing the rigor to meet the demands of the Common Core standards. New math and reading curricula have been adopted throughout the district.

New science and new social studies curricula have been adopted at L.J. Hauser Junior High School and are being piloted this year in the district’s elementary schools.

The district has adopted a new program for advanced learners, introduced a STEAM program at Hauser, expanded its program for students for whom English is not their native language and revamped the intervention program to help struggling students.

Brownlow also implemented a new teacher evaluation system and vastly increased the quantity and the quality of the district’s professional development.

“We’ve touched curriculum in almost every area,” Brownlow said. “While a lot was accomplished, I can’t say they were my accomplishments. I think they were the district’s.”

School board members are disappointed that Brownlow is leaving District 96.

“I’m sad that she’s going,” said school

board member Joel Marhoul. “She’s done great work with renewing that curriculum.”

School board President Jeff Miller called Brownlow’s leaving “unfortunate.”

Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye also praised Brownlow for the work she did at District 96.

“Merryl was effective at facilitating important team processes that improved student learning for all District 96 students,” Ryan-Toye said in an email. “We know that Merryl has created pathways and systems that will allow us to continue to grow after her planned departure.”

Principals in District 96 say that they will miss Brownlow.

“Merryl’s work will leave a lasting footprint on the successes of District 96,” said Central School Principal Pete Gatz. “Merryl had an impact on my growth as a building administrator. I cannot thank her enough for her support and guidance over the last four years.”

Brownlow was recruited to District 96 by former Superintendent David Bonnette. She came to District 96 after serving for one year as the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning at Lombard District 44.

In her first year at District 96 she worked under Interim Superintendents Griff Powell and Patrick Patt, both of whom lavished praise upon her.

In fact, Patt, who is now serving as the Co-Interim Superintendent in Lyons School District 103, encouraged Brownlow this fall to apply for the job as superintendent there, but Brownlow declined.

Brownlow said the chance to keep doing curriculum work, which is her passion, is what made the District 128 job attractive to her.

Before becoming an assistant superintendent, Brownlow spent nine years as a principal, the last five at Willard School in River Forest where she worked closely with RyanToye.

Brownlow’s relationship with Ryan-Toye was one factor that made Ryan-Toye an especially attractive candidate for the superintendent’s job in District 96.

Brownlow said that she will always treasure her time at District 96.

“I am very grateful for my experiences here,” Brownlow said. “They have shaped me personally and professionally.”

An attempt to defraud an 89-year-old Brookfield man of $8,500 was narrowly averted last week after his son intervened and told him to call police.

The victim told police that he’d received a phone call on the morning of Jan. 7 from someone claiming to be his grandson. The caller told the victim that he was in the hospital, injured after being involved in a car crash in Wisconsin. In addition, the caller told the victim that he had been arrested for drunken driving and needed $8,500 to bond out of jail.

The caller gave the victim a phone number to call to get further instructions. The victim called and was told to put the money in an envelope and mail it next-day air to a New Jersey address. Before the victim could send the money, his son advised him that the call was a scam and confirming that the victim’s grandson was fine and in Florida.

Police called the number the victim had been given and briefly talked to someone who hung up when pressed.

■ A 72-year-old Brookfield woman called police on Jan. 9 and had her bank change her account number after she allowed someone access to her home computer as part of a telephone scam.

The victim told police she got a call at about 11:30 a.m. from someone named “David Dawson” who told her she was the “lucky recipient” of a $399 refund. In order to receive it, however, the victim needed to give the caller remote access to her computer.

After giving the caller access he reportedly told the victim he’d accidentally deposited $10,000 into her bank account and instructed her to reimburse him the difference by purchasing some gift cards and giving him the redemption codes.

At that time the victim realized the call was a scam and hung up the phone. The victim contacted her bank, which confirmed no transaction had taken place and changed the victim’s bank account number.

Car catches fire Police and firefighters were dispatched to the 9100 block of Sahler Avenue, Brookfield, on Jan. 11 at about 11:40 p.m. for a vehicle that was on fire.

When emergency personnel arrived, they noticed flames coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment of a Nissan Altima parked on the street. The vehicle appeared to be running and unoccupied.

The vehicle’s owner reportedly told police she arrived home at about 8:20 p.m., turned off the vehicle and went inside. She said she didn’t know how the vehicle might have restarted but mentioned to police that she did

have an appointment to have the car checked because its “check engine” light would turn on and off without warning.

The front end of the car sustained heavy damage due to the fire, police said.

Apartment break-in A resident of a garden-level apartment in the 2200 block of 17th Avenue, North Riverside, called police on Jan. 2 at about 5:35 p.m. to report that someone had broken in and stolen jewelry and cash from her bedroom.

It’s unclear how the offender gained entry.

Reported missing was $475 in cash, a Pandora bracelet, two pair of silver earrings and a silver ring. Other items of value were left undisturbed.

Man beaten after rebuffing gang offer Brookfield police responded to an alley behind an apartment building in the 3500 block of Vernon Avenue on Jan. 9 at about 6:20 a.m. after a 25-year-old Chicago man called to say he had to fight his way out of a friend’s apartment after refusing to join their gang.

The victim, who had some dried blood on his lip and on one of his ears and a large bruise on his torso, reportedly told police he’d previously been in a street gang but no longer was part of it. He went to the apartment to hang out with friends, a dozen of whom started beating him when he declined their offer to join them.

Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital for treatment, but he reportedly told police he did not want to press charges because he was worried about his family.

Can of ravioli North Riverside police responded to a residence in the 8000 block of Country Club Lane on Jan. 6 at about 1:55 a.m. after the homeowner called to report that a male and a female had been captured on his surveillance camera dumping a can of ravioli on the front door of his home about seven minutes earlier.

The two offenders were last seen fleeing to the east. Police searched the area with no luck.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Jan. 2-13 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Riverside Library wine tasting returns – with more offerings Additional pour stations, cocktails, cash bar all part of 2019 event

Last year’s inaugural Reading Between the Wines fundraiser by the Riverside Public Library was such a success that organizers this year are tweaking the event to ensure shorter lines, more choices and easier access to food.

This year’s Reading Between the Wines will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the library, 1 Burling Road. Last year’s event drew more than 300 people and raised $26,000, which included a surprise $12,000 matching gift by an anonymous donor.

Proceeds raised by the wine-tasting event will go toward the library’s planned $1.3 million renovation of the building’s lower-level.

Over the past 15 months, the library has raised about $171,000 in private donations from individuals and from events such as Reading Between the Wines.

“Hopefully this year’s event will kick us off for 2019,” said library Trustee Courtney Greve Hack, who serves on the Reading Between the Wines organizing committee.

In partnership with Riverside Foods, the library will provide nine tasting stations – up from six last year – offering tasting portions from 40 different bottles of wine from around

“Our feedback from last years was that it was received really well, but that lines were an issue,” Greve Hack said.

Peter Boutsikakis, co-owner of Riverside Foods, said that the need for more wine stations was evident, because people wanted to stop and find out more about what they were drinking from the vendors.

“Patrons were looking for more information on the wines, so we needed more pour stations and better flow,” Boutsikakis said.

“I feel like when you’re doing events in unique spaces like this you always learn something. Flow and availability of wine is at the forefront this year.”

North Riverside Parks and Rec is offering a pair of programs designed to help out the parents of young children in the coming weeks.

The first are Parent Escape Nights on Jan. 19, Feb. 22, April 4 and May 4, where you can drop off the kids and go out on a dinner date, pencil in time with your friends, go shopping or just take a nap.

Drop off the kids ages 2-11 at the Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave., and staff will entertain them with activities of all sorts. Dinner is provided as well. The fee is $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional.

They’re also offering up a pair of Day-Off Drop-Off Camp days for kids ages 3-12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21 and Monday, Feb. 18, which are scheduled school days off. Drop off the kids and staff will lead them in structured activities. The fee is $25 per child ($27 non-residents).

“Victor was a quiet young man who was very motivated to serve his country as a Marine,” said RBHS teacher Dave Monti, who taught Molinar zoology last year. “He was very proud of his enlistment and eager to graduate and go to basic training.”

Molinar was in Patty Young’s geometry class his sophomore year.

“Victor was the type of student who treated others with respect on a daily basis,” Young said. “He was held in high esteem by staff and his fellow classmates.”

While Molinar was often quiet at RBHS, he came alive with his family and friends. He

loved to tell jokes and make people laugh.

“He just knew how to make you smile,” said Jessica Molinar. “He was just basically a comedian. He just always had something good, something funny to say. He joked about almost everything. He was always happy.”

He was very close to Jessica, who is three years older.

After serving in the military Molinar wanted to become a firefighter.

“He just was passionate about serving the country and helping other people,” Jessica Molinar said. “He was an optimist. He was always giving and caring for other people.”

He was a big fan of NASCAR, enjoyed swimming and going to the lake.

Last year he became serious with a girl, Julissa Tello, of Chicago. They talked of a future together and planned to get married.

“He really enjoyed hanging out with his friends, his fiancé, swimming,” Jessica Molinar said.

He previously worked at County Line Pizza in Elmhurst.

In addition to his fiancé and his sisters, Victor Molinar leaves behind his mother Marina Ramirez, his father Victor Molinar Sr. and a host of other relatives.

Funeral arrangements are still pending.

“He was a noble man,” Jessica Molinar said.

“He will be forever missed and we love him.”

The development would occupy an irregularly wedge-shaped parcel of land owned by Sokol’s mother, Linda Sokol Francis, and the Methodist Church along the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard.

According to Sokol, the development would include four ground-floor commercial spaces along the Grand Boulevard side of the structure. Those would be topped by one or two more stories of condominiums, perhaps four or eight units in all.

Along the Washington Avenue frontage, the plan is to build a fine arts center that would include a theater space that would be used on Sundays as Compassion United Methodist Church and would be available for community use at other times. The theater perhaps could seat as many as 150 people, Sokol said.

“This would be a church, yes,” Sokol said.

“On every Sunday morning we would be talking about Jesus, but the rest of the week it would be available for the community.

The idea is for it to be a professional, flexible theater.”

The fine arts center would also include art gallery space and smaller rooms for artrelated activities. It’s unclear, if this is built,

While the purchase of 40 E. Burlington St. solves a longstanding problem for St. Mary Parish, the move surely is not popular with municipal officials. The village is losing not only an opportunity to redevelop a commercial property in the midst of Riverside’s downtown, but the property will also go off the tax rolls, since it is owned by the church.

“I understand the church’s need for office space, but I’m disappointed it’s in the middle of our business district,” said Village President Ben Sells. “We were hoping they’d accomplish the project at the church. We’re disappointed to have premium commercial property off the tax rolls.

On the other hand, they need the space.”

The parcels comprising the former PNC Bank property generated $55,130 in property tax revenue for tax year 2017, which

was paid in 2018. Of that amount $39,056 went to schools serving the village, while $11,103 went to fund municipal operations.

While that money won’t disappear, the tax burden instead will be spread among all the other taxpayers in the village.

When Riverside School District 96 closes on the former Texor office building at the corner of Harlem Avenue and East Quincy Street, that will be another commercial property off of the tax rolls.

For tax year 2017, the Texor property generated a total of $43,207 in property tax revenues.

The purchase also ends any chance, for now, to assemble three adjacent commercial properties and undertake a significant redevelopment in downtown Riverside.

Patrick Leone, whose Lion Development bought the commercial condominiums of the Village Center building in 2013, has also acquired the properties at 28 E. Burlington St. and 30 E. Burlington St., which stand between the Village Center and the PNC Bank building.

Movin’ on up

Marshall founder’s son-in-law oversaw transformation from sleepy thrift to showplace

arshall Savings and Loan, which once called 3722 Harlem Ave. in Riverside home before it was seized by the state, hadn’t always cultivated the high profile it had attained by the time it was celebrating its 100 Million Dollar-versary in January 1963.

Until Henry Moravec Sr. and his brother, Jerome, became president and treasurer of the association, respectively, in the 1950s, it was positively sleepy.

The thrift was established in 1904 in the Marshall Square section of the predominantly Bohemian Chicago neighborhood of South Lawndale, commonly referred to as Little Village.

Established as the Marshall Building, Loan and Homestead Association, one of its earliest presidents was a man named Anton who owned The Rise and Fall of Dolezal, a neighborhood Marshall Savings laundry business.

PART 3 OF 5 According to the Sept. 17, 1910 edition of “The American Contractor,” Dolezal pulled building permits to construct a two-story brick building at 2448 S. Kedzie Ave. The red brick structure still stands today, identifiable by the initials “A.D.” on the façade.

Dolezal is listed as living at that address in the 22nd Annual Report of Building, Loan and Homestead Associations, presented in 1914 to the governor by the state’s auditor of public accounts. Dolezal; his wife, Catherine; and their daughter, Vlasta lived on the second-floor of the building in an apartment above the ground-level storefront.

He’s also listed as president of the association, which declared its fiscal year 1913 assets at about $65,000. But Marshall didn’t go in for much advertising or promotion, apparently.

In the 1915 “Directory and Almanac of the Bohemian Population of Chicago,” published by the Bohemian-American Hospital Association -- a comprehensive listing of every Bohemian religious, educational and commercial institution in the city and chock full of statistics about Czechs all over the country – the Marshall Building, Loan and Homestead Association didn’t see fit to advertise, though 33 other banking and financial businesses did.

Dolezal himself bought an ad in the almanac for his California Laundry, which listed

its address at 2448-50 S. Kedzie Ave. and included a picture of the proprietor.

Marshall Savings kept such a low profile that it wasn’t even listed in the Chicago telephone directory until, by all appearances, December 1957, after the institution already had moved to Riverside.

On Nov. 23, 1929, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the 22-year-old Vlasta Dolezal married 27-year-old Henry Moravec. The couple moved in with Vlasta’s parents in the flat on Kedzie Avenue.

The couple was still living in the flat with Anton and Catherine Dolezal in 1940, according to the 1940 census, which lists the then 38-year-old Henry Moravec as the proprietor of a real estate business. The 1940 census also notes that Vlasta and Henry Moravec had an 8-year-old son, Henry Jr. Throughout that time, Marshall began to grow as a savings and loan association. In March 1926, Marshall merged with the Karl Havlicek Building and Loan and in 1932, James Drnek was named chairman of the board of the directors, a position he would hold until his death in July 1959.

the Chicago History Museum, acquired by the Federal Home Loan Bank after the state seized Marshall Savings and Loan.

The minutes are strictly in Czech, except for copies

of certain contracts. No records exist for the association from 1932-56. When they resume, in 1957, Drnek is still chairman of the board.

But the association’s name had changed to Marshall Savings and Loan and its president was Henry J. Moravec Sr. The real estate broker was now also a banker. And following the death of Drnek in 1959, the board minutes reflect an aggressiveness toward expansion and a penchant for risky land speculation that is nowhere to be seen in the brief meetings of the board under the direction of its founders.

By 1957 there was another big change. No longer was Marshall Savings and Loan located in the building Dolezal had erected on Kedzie Avenue. It was now ensconced at 3722 Harlem Ave. in Riverside.

It’s not exactly clear how Henry Moravec Sr. came to be president of Marshall Savings and Loan, but that event appears to have occurred around 1950, when the association began its move to the suburbs.

The relocation was engineered by savings and loan officials associated with the Dolezal family.

Henry Moravec Sr. was interested in moving to Riverside as early as the mid-1940s, according to property records kept by the Cook County Recorder of Deeds.

But the couple did live in Riverside by 1947, according to an article in November of that year in the Chicago Tribune, announcing the 50th wedding anniversary of Henry Sr.’s parents.

Henry’s older brother, Jerome, also an officer of the savings and loan, made Riverside his home in 1950.

In February of that year, Jerome Moravec bought the property at 363 Longcommon Road. He sold it in 1955 to build a home closer to his brother, who by then was living at 484 Longcommon.

On June 5, 1950 the property at 3722 Harlem Ave., which would become the Riverside home of Marshall Savings and Loan, was purchased by Emil Sus, an officer of Marshall Savings and Loan and the brother-inlaw of Henry Moravec Sr. Sus had married another of Anton Dolezal’s daughters, Lillian. They would move to a home on Desplaines Avenue in Riverside. On Sept. 15, 1950, Sus transferred ownership of 3722 Harlem Ave. to Jerome Moravec via quit claim deed.

Marshall Savings and Loan made its move from the city official shortly after the Harlem Avenue property was purchased. The savings and loan, along with Henry Moravec Sr.’s real estate business, is listed in the 1952 Berwyn phone book at 3722 Harlem Ave. in Riverside.

The association’s leaders then embarked on an ambitious expansion campaign to make Marshall Savings look like the player it wanted to be.

According to Riverside Building Department records, Marshall Savings obtained a building permit in April 1957 to alter the

and Loan in Riverside, and in January 1959 the association held an open house to show off its newly remodeled headquarters.

The Tribune published a photo of the newly remodeled interior. It was quite something.

“Brown, gold and aquamarine provide the color motif for all the furnishings,” the Tribune item from Jan. 4, 1959 stated. “There’s a large, landscaped parking lot at the building for customers.”

They weren’t close to being done.

In May 1960, Marshall Savings and Loan obtained permits to demolish an old truck garage to the north of the bank and build a huge new addition in its place. Construction on the “million-dollar addition” started in July 1960, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“The new 36,000-square-foot twostory building with full basement will connect with the association’s present office and is expected to be complete by mid-1961,” the Trib reported.

The article also commented on the building’s “unusual exterior … of porcelain paneling and a multicolored panel above the main entrance [displaying] the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance corPHOTO COURTESY LIZ FARON COLLECTION poration seal.”

tion, “inter-office communications and information will be expedited by a pneumatic tube system throughout both the new and old buildings.”

In 1962, the savings and loan would embark on another construction project, this time an addition to the west, mirroring the one to the north of the original building. It was nearing completion in December 1962, just in time for the January 1963 open house.

Completion of the final touches would last into spring. In May 1963, a photographer from the Chicago Sun-Times snapped a photo of a proud Jerome Moravec standing atop the roof overlooking the corner of Harlem and Ogden, pointing out the enormous “M” and the digital display below it, which would record the time and temperature.

Despite looking like a well-oiled cash machine that was at the top of its game, Marshall Savings and Loan needed money when the Moravecs rolled out the much-publicized 100 Million Dollar-versary, and they were hoping that their annual open house would again deliver for them.

Since the spring of 1962, many of the association’s depositors in the suburbs were getting a little uneasy about having their money tied up in an institution that was receiving a lot of negative publicity in the daily press.

By May of 1963, when the big M loomed over Harlem and Ogden, some depositors already had positively panicked.

What made them jittery was Marshall Savings and Loan’s involvement with a mobconnected impresario and his dream hotel near O’Hare Airport.

Take a breath

A

s Brookfield trustees prepare themselves to vote to amend the village’s zoning code to prohibit all types of “assembly” in the Eight Corners business district, they might want to give a hard look at what’s now being proposed by the Rev. Karl Sokol for the 3400 block of Grand Blvd. and maybe take a breath.

For the past decade, the owners of that property, which starts at the point formed by the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue and runs about halfway down Grand Boulevard, have made no secret about their wish to bring a church to the site.

Back in 2009 when Linda Sokol Francis began assembling the land (much of it has since been transferred to the Methodist Church) the concept for a structure was more “churchy,” so to speak. It was essentially a large, open indoor space, with a proposed ice cream parlor at the point of the corner.

The plan ended up getting the thumbs down from both the Plan Commission and the village board in 2010.

Since that time, the village has adopted a comprehensive plan that clearly articulates what officials see as the future for Eight Corners – a pedestrian-oriented commercial and residential district. One that ideally wouldn’t have a church plunked down on the circle.

And in the latest plan, revealed Jan. 14 at the village board’s committee of the whole meeting by Rev. Sokol, you don’t get a church on the circle.

What’s being proposed, at least conceptually, is a building that would appear to very much fit into the pedestrianoriented commercial district the village is trying to foster.

Ground floor commercial spaces? Check. Above ground multifamily residential units? Check.

On the opposite side of the building Sokol proposes to build a “fine arts center” that would accommodate live theater as well as the visual arts. An auditorium seating perhaps 150 would serve as a performance space, a place that could be used by the community and, yes, as a church.

Yes, the church space would come off the tax rolls. The rest of the development, said Sokol, would be taxed like any other commercial or residential property in the village. Onsite parking is planned for the northern end of the property.

It’s not clear that such a development (particularly a surface parking lot on the north end, which is in a purely residential zoning district) would pass muster. Designs can change to make them work.

But the plan doesn’t get off the ground at all if, in two weeks, the village board votes to prohibit “assembly” in the zoning district.

We’re not sure what members of the village board believe would be better suited to this property than what Sokol revealed on Monday. There has to be a way to achieve the village’s goals while finding accommodation for what looks to be a theater that is used in a very limited way as a church.

We’re not sure how much good faith Karl Sokol and Linda Sokol Francis need to display to prove they’re not trying to pull a fast one on the village. To date, their intentions, and the results, have been nothing but positive.

Riverside set to celebrate 150 years

R

iverside is celebrating its sesquicentennial (that’s 150 years) this year, something we will address at another time, but it made me think of how many families have longevity in Riverside -- I mean a long time.

Anything 50 years or under is not a long time by Riverside’s standards.

Our family has been in Riverside for 78 years, which is a fairly long time, but I think of others who are still here that have helped to shape Riverside’s history. This is a subject that will turn into some research on my part and a few more columns, but here are some brief things to get started.

It is not unusual for many native Riversiders to remain in the village or return after some period of their lifetime. Consider the Creadon family, whose family home was on Lawton Road and has been changed over the years by different owners.

Most remembered was Francis Creadon, born and raised here. He married Mae and they raised their family here. Two of his daughters, Kathleen Sullivan and Mary Ellen O’Donnell, and daughter-in-law Carol, whose late husband was Pat Creadon, are proud to still be residents. Another generation of the Creadon family

resides here, Mary Carol Murphy and her family. I think the family likes it here.

Judith Cross West Jisa’s family can trace its roots back to some of Riverside’s first residents. The clock on the Riverside Township Hall was a gift from her ancestors many years ago. The four children of Judy Jisa and her late husband, Wendell, have chosen Riverside as the place to raise their families. Wendell (a current village trustee), Wendy, Sara and Danny are adding another generation of the family to the history of Riverside.

Mike Parrat has a story of his relationship to Riverside growing up here and his association with the fire department. Mike’s story is one which will be covered after doing my research, in other words talking to him and his wife, Mary.

Bill Sherman’s Riverside story will also be covered.

A longtime member of the Riverside Fire Department and its current deputy chief, Bill has much to share when it comes to his family’s relationship with Riverside and the fire department in particular.

Time for my research to begin and discover which family has resided in Riverside the longest.

Seguin home in Brookfield named for Tobolski

U

CP Seguin of Greater Chicago has named of one of its group homes in honor of Jeffrey R. Tobolski, Cook County commissioner and mayor of McCook.

The Tobolski House, at 4306 Blanchan Ave. in Brookfield, is home to residents with developmental disabilities. It was formally dedicated in a ceremony on Nov. 29, 2018 in recognition of Tobolski’s service to UCP Seguin.

Since joining the Cook County Board in 2010, Tobolski has advocated for and facilitated nearly $700,000 in funding for UCP Seguin to rehabilitate dozens of group homes, making them safe, accessible, energy efficient and functional.

He also worked on UCP Seguin’s behalf to

secure forgiveness of $1.3 million in Cook County HOME Loans, helping sustain the agency’s fiscal viability. Tobolski also serves as co-chair of the UCP Seguin “Life Without Limits” Capital Campaign, working to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars towards a new employment and life skills training center; establish a new group home for four individuals and complete needed rehabilitation to current UCP Seguin group homes and centers.

The two-year process involves teachers demonstrating standards-based evidence of the positive impact they have on student learning through samples of student work, videos of their teaching and written analysis.

Alice Darwin, a Brookfield resident of nearly 55 years, won Cantata Adult Life Service’s 1st Annual Great Holiday Cookie Bake Off with her award-winning recipe, Peanut Butter Blossoms at a fundraising event on the Cantata campus on Dec. 15, 2018.

Cookie recipes were scouted from all over Cantata’s campus and community and the top 13 were chosen to complete the classic baker’s dozen. Bakers in Cantata’s hospitality kitchen recreated each recipe for the event, where guests were able to purchase tickets to vote on which cookies they liked the best.

All proceeds from the event benefitted

Cantata’s Best Life Foundation, which looks for new and innovative ways to improve the lives of older adults in and around the Brookfield area.

Darwin is an active and involved resident in Cantata’s Wye Valley Independent Living Building. Her Peanut Butter Blossom cookies have been made in the Darwin home since her own children (now grown adults with kids of their own) were little.

She said she initially got the recipe from a Brookfield-published cookbook, but the cookies were very easy to make and her children liked them, so she kept making them each year after.

Leila Fernandez, 95 Riverside resident Leila E. Fernandez (nee Pedraja), 95, died on Jan. 14, 2018 at her Riverside home.

She was born on March 15, 1923 in Cuba and had worked as a seamstress.

Ms. Fernandez was the wife of the late Manuel; the mother of Jacqueline (Robert) Dominguez; the grandmother of Maegan (Joshua) Dominguez, Reuben (Rose) Dominguez; the great-grandmother of Hanley G. Rolando and baby-to-be Vithor Dominguez; the sisLEILA FERNANDEZ ter of the late Ofelia “Ursula,” late Nelia, late Jesus, late Rafael, late Yolanda, late Felix, late Hilda and the late Vincente; and an aunt to many.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral, 730 N. Wabash Ave. in Chicago.

Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church by 9:45 a.m. Interment will be at Maryhill Cemetery.

Elizabeth Frazier, 91 Retired executive secretary Elizabeth DeGolyer Frazier, 91, of Mt. Prospect and formerly of Riverside, died on Dec. 17, 2018.

Born in 1927, she was raised in Riverside and graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School in 1945. After graduating from Carroll University in 1949, she worked as an executive secretary at James B. Clow & Sons, Binks Manufacturing and Zenith Corporation, from which she retired after 30 years in 1992.

She had lifelong interests in Native American civilization, archeology, ancient Egypt, early American antiques, and the environment.

Ms. Frazier was the daughter of the late Cecil and late Harriet (nee Greenleaf); the sister of Robert and Richard and the late Harriet Beaubien, William and Howard; and an aunt to 11 Fraziers and Beaubiens and their families.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home, 80 E. Burlington St. in Riverside, with inurnment at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park.

Memorial donations may be sent to the American Indian College Fund, which works to increase the number of American Indians who hold college degrees (collegefund.org).

Glenna M. Linder, 92 Church deacon was store detective Glenna M. Linder (nee McKillip), 92, of Riverside died Jan. 10, 2019.

A lifelong resident of Riverside (Shenstone and Lawton Roads), she attended RiversideBrookfield High School (Class of 1944), was an active member (and former deacon) of the Riverside Presbyterian Church and The Frederick Law Olmsted Society, and spent countless hours playing bridge and doubles tennis as “Big Red” at the Riverside Swim Club, for which she was among the founding members.

After graduating from Blackburn College, she attended the Katharine Gibbs secretarial school and worked at the Western Electric Company in Cicero. She later attended Triton College, earning a degree in criminal justice, which she applied in GLENNA M. LINDER her 34-year career at Carson Pirie Scott & Co. as an undercover detective, where she assisted in innumerable shoplifting pinches.

With her ever-present camera and adventurous spirit, she traveled extensively through North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia/New Zealand and Africa with husband Bill, and later with sons Bill and Curtis and dear Riverside friends, and snapped the fateful photo in Tanzania of Curtis meeting “her Nancy” to be.

An avid autograph collector, among her fondest memories of celebrity encounters was drinking with Errol Flynn and meeting Joe Louis.

Ms. Linder was the wife of 51 years of the late William Dyer Linder; the mother of William Glenn and Curtis Arthur (Nancy); the sister of the late William David (Carol) McKillip; sister-in-law of the late Arthur and Gail Gerken; a dear aunt to many; and a cousin of Virginia Scott Heinemann.

The family thanks the dear staff of Caledonia Senior Living/The Scottish Home for their loving care. Services have been held.

She was a member of Third Unitarian Church in Austin, serving on their educational scholarship committee, and a longtime member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), where she continued her support of educational scholarship for young people.

Ms. Slivinski was the wife of Paul Slivinski (who died on Oct. 15, 2018) for 62 years; the mother of Annie Slivinski, Lucy Slivinski and David Slivinski; and grandmother to Theo Glaser, Vanessa Slivinski, Kindra Slivinski and Matthew Slivinski.

He was the son of Audrey and the late Ronald J. Vlk Sr.; the brother of Rebecca, Jennifer; the half-brother of Robert Neitzel, Kenneth, Marcus, Andrew, Michael Vlk and the late David Neitzel; and an uncle of many.

Services have been held. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

Bulldogs grapple at Illini Classic RBHS wrestling team preparing for upcoming conference meet, postseason

The Riverside-Brookfield High School wrestling team scored 22 points to finish 15th at the Illini Classic hosted by Lincoln-Way West over the weekend.

Senior Sam Halwaji had a good outing in the 170-pound weight class for RBHS, splitting four matches and scoring seven points for the Bulldogs. Halwaji (14-11), the kicker on the football team last fall, earned both of his victories via fall. He pinned Schaumburg’s Huzzaifa Razzak at 1:01 and Niles West’s Johnny Larionesi at 5:49.

Cristian Vasquez, Irvin Valdes, Quinton Godlewski, Brock Hoyd and Dominick Rowe each won a match at the 18-team tourney. Valdes, a senior, has 16 wins this season.

Talented underclassmen Godlewski and Hoyd are 14-8 and 17-7, respectively.

RBHS takes on host Taft and St. Patrick in a triangular Thursday, Jan. 17 at 4:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs will also compete in the Metro Suburban Conference meet on Saturday, Jan. 19. Hosted by Fenton High School in Bensenville, matches start at 9 a.m.

RBHS girls basketball Sarah Jnobaptiste (19 points, 5 rebounds) and Brenna Loftus (15 points) led a balanced scoring attack in the Bulldogs’ 52-31 victory over St. Edward in Elgin. Nine players scored for RBHS, which also employed its pressure defense effectively against the Green Wave.

RBHS senior Mary Maloney led the team with six steals, while teammates Angelina Ocampo, Cassandra Hines and Natalie Leon had two steals apiece. The Bulldogs scored 17 points off turnovers.

The Bulldogs kicked off 2019 with a 65-61 loss against visiting Rosary on Jan. 3. Loftus and Jnobaptiste scored 23 and 20 points, respectively; SARAH JNOBAPTISTE however, they shot a combined 16for-50 from the field. The team’s two RBHS guard top scorers contributed six rebounds and two steals as well.

Maloney (9 points, 2 steals), Ocampo (team-high 10 rebounds) and Georgiana Gomorczak (6 points, 3-for-3 shooting) also played well.

RBHS squandered a six-point lead late and lost 79-70 in overtime against host Aurora Christian on Jan. 11.

Senior Andrew Veon recorded a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds and made 11 of 12 shots from the field. Patrick Hanley (18 points) and Zach Vaia (12 points) also contributed for the Bulldogs.

In a nonconference matchup last week, the Bulldogs beat Brother Rice 71-66. All five RBHS started scored in double figures, led by Reggie Loury who scored 22 points including 6-for-7 shooting on three-pointers. Veon (14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists) and Vaia (12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals) offered support.

Seven of the next eight games are on the road for the Bulldogs. RBHS (13-4, 4-1 Metro Suburban) visits St. Francis on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. and Bishop McNamara on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

DePaul Prep on Jan. 12.

In their other games, the Friars defeated Marmion 6254 and Montini 73-68. Sophomore forward Bryce Hopkins scored 26 points and senior guard Solomon Oraegbu added 12 points against Marmion.

Hopkins (25 points, 8 rebounds), Oraegbu (21 points, 7 rebounds) and freshman guard Trey Pettigrew (11 points, 5 assists) led the Friars against Montini.

LTHS boys swimming Michael Walsh won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.39 seconds at the Trevian Relays hosted by New Trier.

Jack Thorell tied Stevenson’s AJ Carollo (55.30) for fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. The Lions’ best relay was the 200 medley team of Thorell, Walsh, Will Duerr and Bryson Breitenbucher which placed fourth at 1 minute, 38.40 seconds.

The Lions finished in ninth place with 136 points. Stevenson (214), Neuqua Valley (198) and Hinsdale Central (167) took the top three spots.

RBHS cheerleading The varsity and junior varsity teams both placed first at the Metro Suburban Conference competition over the weekend.

LTHS junior Lily Courier had a doubledouble of 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 62-57 win at Downers Grove South.

Owners approached D96 from page 2 It appears that the district is paying a bit of premium for the home, which is owned by Scott and Brooke Schwarz. The district’s appraisal valued the home at $330,000 although Scott Schwarz said that other appraisals were higher.

The district is also throwing in a $5,000 moving allowance and will let the Schwarzes live in the house rentfree for all of 2019. The house does not need to be demolished until 2020 because the district does not plan to build the addition to Ames until that year.

“We wouldn’t be doing anything with that lot anyway, because any kind of construction would only start in 2020,” Miller said.

The home was not on the market. Instead, the Schwarzes first approached District 96 officials in 2016 about the possibility of selling their home shortly after the district bought the Repton Road home.

As the district’s architects worked on plans for the addition to Ames and struggled with space constraints, talks to buy the home turned serious

over the last few months.

“This property was brought to our attention really quite a while ago,” Ryan-Toye Scott Schwarz is an assistant vice president of mortgage loan origination at Regions Bank. Brooke Schwarz is a neonatal intensive care nurse and the former co-president of the Ames PTA. They have three daughters, two of whom have graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School and one who is a sophomore at RBHS. “Our kids went to that school,” Scott Schwarz said of Ames School. “We always thought that having a little green space for that school would be a benefit, and that was part of the reason that we looked into doing this when they had bought the other property and were starting to create some green space.”

District 96 will pay cash for the home.

This is the third real estate acquisition for the district in a little more than two years.

In 2016, the district paid $339,100 for the home at 92 Repton Road, which it demolished last year. In November 2018, the district agreed to buy the former Texor Petroleum office building at 3340 Harlem Ave. for $600,000 to house the district administrative office.

That deal has not closed yet as the district has extended its due-diligence period to conduct an environmental review of the property.
