Honorio Perez reportedly stalked Ruiz after separation

Calling the man accused of killing 42-year-old Maria Ruiz in the parking lot of the North Riverside Park Mall on Jan. 13 a flight risk, Judge Geary Kull ordered Honorio Perez held without bond while awaiting trial.

At Perez’s bond hearing at the Maybrook courthouse on Jan. 17, Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Moss told Kull that Perez, 49, was apprehended by police at a Chicago bus stop, where he was attempting to board a bus to Mexico.

Moss said that at the time of his arrest, Perez, a U.S. citizen, was carrying a fraudulent Mexican ID and was using a false name.

According to Moss, Perez and Ruiz were in a “dating relationship,” saying that at some point last year Ruiz left Perez. When HONORIO PEREZ Ruiz broke off the relationship, said Moss, Perez made threats to kill her and then himself.

Perez began stalking Ruiz, Moss said, and “continued to keep track of the victim after their separation.” In December 2017, Perez allegedly was able to obtain a gun.

Sister Margaret Halligan, who founded the St. Barbara Parish Food Pantry and served as its director for 34 years, died peacefully on Jan. 14 at the age of 90.

Raised in Brookfield by a family who were parishioners at St. Barbara’s, she also attended the parish grade school. She graduated from Nazareth Academy in 1945, and two years later she entered religious life with the Sisters of St. Joseph at the age of 20.

Armed with a degree from DePaul University, Sister Margaret embarked on a 24-year career as a teacher – instructing students in every grade from three through eight in a number of Chicago-area Catholic schools, including St. John Fisher in Chicago, Divine Infant in Westchester, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Melrose Park, St. Joseph Academy in LaGrange Park and St. Francis Xavier in LaGrange.

While she often taught at schools not too far from home, it wouldn’t be until 1972 that Sister Margaret returned to her home parish in Brookfield to teach eighth grade. Two Sister Margaret Halligan years later, she was named director of religious education, but in 1980 turned her focus to pastoral ministry, making a profound collects food for the pantry on an ongoing basis and supplements the food pantry’s inimpact in the process.

For many years, Sister Margaret lived at the St. Barbara convent before moving to Hodgkins, where she lived with Sister Thomas Agnes King, her closest friend and indispensable assistant at the food pantry, who died in 2016.

Sister Margaret also loved music and played a variety of musical instruments beginning in grammar school, according to Sister Mary Lou Pleitner, who knew Sister Margaret for decades and worked at St. Barbara Parish as an administrative assistant.

Starting on the trombone while in grade school, Sister Margaret added the drums and piano to her repertoire. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sister Margaret, in full habit, played the drums in an all-nun outfit called the Happy Hearts Combo.

While that group entertained fellow nuns, Sister Margaret in the 1970s and 1980s could be seen playing drums in another group called The Pink Garter, a singalong group that played for parish fundraisers.

“She was a delightful, happy personality,” Pleitner said.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 20 at the Sisters of St. Joseph Chapel in LaGrange Park.

Representatives from a Hinsdale-based real estate development company will appear before the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m., requesting to rezone a parcel of land in order to allow the construction of a mixed-use commercial/residential building at 8911 Burlington Ave. Tartan Builders bought the property last summer and razed the former Rezny Realty building in anticipation of the new development. The developers have kept their plans under wraps, but the Landmark obtained renderings of the proposed Brookfield Station building after filing a Freedom of Information request last week.

Plans indicate that Tartan Builders is proposing the construction of a four-story building with ground-floor commercial space topped by three floors housing two two-bedroom units each. The renderings do not indicate whether the units will be condominiums or apartments.

The scale and density of Brookfield Station, however, will require that the lot where the development is being planned be rezoned from SA-5 to SA-1. The lot is part of the new Station Area Zoning District created by the village board last year.

“I think it’s right in line with our zoning modernization goals,” said Nicholas Greifer, the village’s community and economic developer. “This company has a great track record, so I’m confident they’ll be able to execute that plan.”

Brookfield Station is the first development that is being considered in the new Station Area Zoning District created by the village board last year in order to spur transitoriented development along the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad line.

Presently, 8911 Burlington Ave. is part of the SA-5 Residential Mix District, which allowed residential-only structures of between two and six stories. Tartan Builders seeks an SA-1 Core Mixed-Use designation, which allows buildings up to six stories, built to the front lot line, with commercial on the ground floor and residential above.

Essentially, the rezoning would extend the SA-1 district one lot to the west of its current boundary on Burlington Avenue. The strip mall to the east of the site is zoned SA-1.

One of the goals of the Station Area Zoning district is to increase density and augment existing transit-oriented and pedestrian-oriented development in Brookfield’s downtown, which is centered on the Grand/ Prairie intersection on both sides of the tracks near the downtown Metra station.

Greifer said higher density developments will help support businesses and create more vibrancy in the downtown area.

“If you increase the number of people living in the downtown by 200 in, say, the next three years, I just have to believe it will have a multiplier effect on the downtown,’ Greifer said.

If the Planning and Zoning Commission recommends rezoning the property, the matter will go to the village’s board of trustees for a final vote at a later date.

Two-flat owner seeks to re-zone land The owner of a two-unit apartment building in the 3800 block of Park Avenue will ask the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission on Jan. 25 to recommend rezoning it in order to remove an existing legal nonconformity.

Joshua Jasien, a LaGrange Park resident who has owned the property since 2009, is asking the Planning and Zoning Commission to change the zoning from A-1 (singlefamily residential) to SA-6, a residential zoning classification within the new Station Area Zoning District.

The SA-6 district allows buildings up to three stories, including row houses, townhouse and single-family homes. The property immediately south of Jasien’s is in the SA-6 district, so the change would extend the district one lot north on Park Avenue.

Jasien said he is not planning to redevelop the property. Instead, he said, he wants to remove the non-conformity (a multi-family building in a single-family district), so that in the event the building is destroyed and needs to be rebuilt, it can be rebuilt in its present use as a multi-family structure.

RBHS parents, students extend hand to the homeless 125 ‘survival kits’ donated to police departments, shelter agencies

Some homeless people’s lives may be a little bit better because of a project organized earlier this month by the Riverside-Brookfield High School Parent Teacher Organization.

On Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Day, a few members of the RBHS PTO and some students assembled and then donated about 125 “survival kits” to two local agencies that work with the homeless and the police departments in Brookfield, North Riverside and Riverside.

Each survival kit includes gloves, hats, socks, hand wipes, small bottles of water and small non-perishable food items like granola bars.

The woman behind the survival kits is Christine Kawiecki, of Riverside, a PTO member. She learned that Martin Luther King Day is also a national day of service and was impressed that her niece’s elementary school in Evanston was handing out survival kits to the homeless.

Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said that his officers will carry the kits in their squad cars and if they encounter a homeless person they will give that person a kit.

“What an outstanding, compassionate service provided by the Riverside-Brookfield High School PTO,” Weitzel said. “My officers will give these kits to people who truly need them. I thank Mrs. Kawiecki for this precious gift. She’s truly giving back to the community, and we’re thankful she offered us an opportunity to participate in the project.”

Kawiecki said that while she rarely sees homeless people in Riverside, she doesn’t have to go far to encounter people living on the street.

She knows that the cold winter weather makes it particularly tough on the homeless and thought that the people would be more motivated to give during the holiday season.

“Particularly at this time of year it felt great to be able to give back to the community,” Kawiecki said.

Riverside board approves raises for village manager 3.5% hikes annually through 2020

Frances’ amended contract calls for her to receive annual base pay raises of 3.5 percent over a three-year period, starting Jan. 1, 2018.

That means Frances’ 2018 salary is $144,900, up from the $140,000 she was paid in 2017. By the time the contract ends 2020, her base salary will be $155,220.

Frances may qualify for bonus payments, if the village board believes such payments are warranted. In December 2016, the village board awarded Frances a $10,000 bonus in lieu of a raise.

Then in February 2017, the village board voted to raise Frances’ base salary by 17 percent, from $119,925 to $140,000. The raise put Frances’ salary in line with top administrators in neighboring Brookfield and North

Riverside.

Frances has served as Riverside’s village manager since January 2015 after working on an interim basis in that capacity for four months. Her first salary as village manager was $117,000.

Prior to being named village manager, Frances was Riverside’s finance director from January 2012 until taking on the interim manager role in September 2014.

Newman wins support of Lipinski’s House colleagues Gutierrez, Schakowsky say incumbent ‘too conservative’

Both incumbent Dan Lipinski and challenger Marie Newman rolled out endorsements last week in the hotly contested 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary.

In something of a surprise, Newman picked up endorsements from two of Lipinski’s congressional colleagues in the Illinois delegation -- Luis Gutierrez (D-4th) and Jan Schakowsky (D-9th District), at a press conference in Washington, D.C. Gutierrez represents almost all of Riverside and nearly all of the northern half of Brookfield.

“It is not easy to endorse a challenger over a colleague in the House of Representatives, especially when that colleague is a member of your own party,” Gutierrez was quoted as saying in a published report in the Roll Call Newspaper.

Gutierrez and Schakowsky are both members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and are two of the most liberal members of the Illinois delegation. Lipinski, meanwhile, is one of the most conservative Democratic members of the House.

Both Gutierrez and Schakowsky have dif-

fered with Lipinski on issues ranging from abortion to immigration and samesex marriage.

Gutierrez said that Lipinski is too conservative for the current Democratic DAN LIPINSKI Party.

“The nation has moved forward,” Gutierrez said. “He would have been all right for Congress in 1996. I want to define myself with Marie Newman, and I hope the Democratic Party does, too.”

Schakowsky said Newman would better represent the views of voters in the 3rd District.

“The people of Illinois’ 3rd District want a pro-health care, pro-immigrant, pro-woman, pro-LGBTQ member of Congress to represent them in Washington,” Schakowsky said.

Last week, Newman also picked up endorsements from a number of female Democratic state legislators, including state senators Toi Hutchinson and Heather Steans and state representatives Theresa Mah, Sara Feigenholtz, Ann Williams and Laura Fine.

But while Newman has been picking up endorsements from out of state and out of

“I cooperate closely with local officials because they understand the needs of their communities,” Lipinski was quoted as saying in the press release. “In my capacity as a representative, I have been very happy to help them build better places for residents to live,

work, and raise their families.”

State Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) is also backing Lipinski. Both Zalewski and Lipinski grew up in the 23rd Ward on the Southwest Side of Chicago and the two families have been politically aligned for a long time.

Bill Lipinski was the alderman for the 23rd Ward before being elected to Congress in 1992.

Zalewski’s father, also named Michael, has been the alderman of the 23rd Ward since 1995.

“Dan and I have had a long, close relationship through the years,” said Zalewski, who also serves as the Riverside Township Democratic Committeeman. “I don’t live in the 3rd Congressional District … but I’m with Dan despite the primary challenge.”

Lipinski has also has a lot of union support and has been endorsed by the Chicago Federation of Labor, the Illinois AFL-CIO, the Transportation Division of the National Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers and the Transportation Communications Union/International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Lipinski is a member of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Riverside police lobby renovation to start soon New vestibule will maintain 24-hour emergency access

Riverside village trustees on Jan. 18 voted unanimously to approve remodeling the police department lobby in anticipation of the launch of a joint dispatch center later this spring.

The project was passed without comment as part of the village board’s consent agenda at its meeting last week. F.H Paschen Construction will serve as the general contractor.

The board approved a roughly $57,000 contract to Paschen for remodeling the lobby of the police department at 31 Riverside Road. According to Police Chief Thomas Weitzel, the work could begin within two to three weeks and be complete by late March or early April.

A similar remodeling project will be done in Brookfield. Those plans have not yet been made public.

The renovation is needed to account for the new West Central Consolidated Communications (WC3) dispatch center, which is now expected to go live in early May. The central dispatch center will be lo-

cated at the North Riverside Police Department, 2359 Desplaines Ave., and will handle police and fire emergency calls for the villages of North Riverside, Riverside, Brookfield and McCook.

That means the Riverside Police Department’s dispatchers will be rolled into and relocated to the North Riverside center.

The front desk of the Riverside’s police station will be manned only during business hours Monday through Friday.

As a result, the lobby is being remodeled to account for that limited staffing while still providing 24-hour emergency access to police from the lobby of the Riverside police station.

According to Weitzel, the lobby will be entered through a new vestibule. The exterior door to the vestibule will be open 24 hours a day, but the interior door, made of high-intensity glass, will automatically lock when the weekday staffer leaves for the day.

New lighting will be installed in the lobby/vestibule area and new high-definition Bosch surveillance cameras will be installed both outside the station and inside the vestibule.

A phone inside the vestibule will automatically connect to the WC3 dispatch center, giving people who walk up after hours immediate access to police.

Weitzel said there will also be a clearly visible, red panic button inside the lobby, which, when pressed, will automatically lock the exterior door, providing a safe

place for anyone who is being followed or feels in immediate danger.

There will also be a crash bar on the vestibule side of the exterior door, allowing anyone inside the vestibule to unlock that door. Or anyone who has secured the exterior door can wait there until police arrive on the scene.

Restoration project OK’d for Riverside depot interior $56,500 remodel seeks original 1910 look

The restoration of the historic train station in downtown Riverside will wrap up in 2018 with an interior remodel that follows a couple of years focusing on getting the building tuck pointed and re-roofed.

“The goal is to restore the interior to as near the 1910 version as possible,” said Riverside Public Works Director Edward Bailey.

As was done for the painted wood soffits on the exterior of the building, restored as part of the roof restoration project last year, workers will do a paint chip analysis to find the original color of the interior plaster walls, said Bailey.

“We should have the original look of the building, as reasonably close as we can get it, once we’re done [with the interior],” Bailey said.

On Jan. 18, the Riverside village board approved the work, awarding F.H Paschen Construction a contract worth about $56,500 to serve as the general contractor for the job.

The board initially had budgeted $25,000 for

the spruce-up, but the village expanded the scope of the project to include not just painting and plaster repair, but improvements to woodwork, electrical and plumbing systems and repairs to the terrazzo floor.

Village officials eye the train station as a potential source of revenue from events, ranging from weddings to fundraisers, and from commercial uses, such as holiday popup shops.

Bailey said he’s not sure exactly when work will begin, but said his department will proceed immediately with establishing a work schedule with the contractor. It’s not clear how long the work will take to complete.

Much of the work will revolve around repairing water damaged and cracked plaster walls, ceiling and architectural trim. A good bit of the work centers on the east end of the station, which at one time was converted into a coffee shop, but plaster repairs and repainting will be done throughout the interior.

Prior to the work starting, the Riverside history exhibit in the west waiting room will be removed. It will be reinstalled once work is complete, said Bailey.

Riverside streamlines process for picking contractor When the Riverside Village Board voted unanimously on Jan. 18 to award construction contracts to F.H. Paschen, they agreed to waive competitive bidding in the process, perhaps signaling a new strategy by the village to streamline the hiring process for capital projects.

In essence, the village piggybacked on policies adopted by Cook County and the village of Naperville, which offers “job order contracting,” according to Public Works Director Edward Bailey.

The village had used the process just once previously before Jan. 18 on a plumbing-related project.

Companies who want job order contracting deals compete with each other for jobs being parceled out by government agencies by offering their lowest

possible unit pricing and hourly worker rates.

Paschen, which has job order contracting arrangements with Cook County and Naperville, agreed to honor its unit pricing for the Riverside work, giving the village pre-established rates for the work they need done.

Instead of creating bid specifications and spending money on the bidding process, which includes required legal advertisements, etc., the village can take advantage rates that have already been arrived at through a competitive process.

“It’s especially helpful for communities with small staffs,” Bailey said. “It can be very expedient and take less time [than a full-blown bid process].”

St. Mary addition gets green light from Riverside Church officials eye June groundbreaking

Officials at St. Mary Parish in Riverside will concentrate on finalizing plans for a new office addition on the east side of the church, 126 Herrick Road, after obtaining a zoning variation from the Riverside Village Board on Jan. 18.

Village trustees voted unanimously to allow the parish to furnish fewer parking spaces than are required under the zoning code, since parking requirements are based more on commercial needs than those of a parish, whose facilities are not all in use at the same time.

“The parking requirements for the church are unrealistic,” said Village President Ben Sells.

Even without the office addition, the St. Mary parking lot doesn’t meet the zoning code’s required 136 spaces – it has 134. The proposed 2,700-square-foot office addition would have triggered a requirement for an additional 11 spaces for a total of 145.

On an average school day, much of the park-

ing lot is free of vehicles. On Sundays, when church services are held, the offices aren’t in heavy use.

Additional parking is located across the street next to the rectory, which has housed the parish offices since 1997. One of the goals of the plan is to re-convert the rectory to a residential use only.

St. Mary’s officials, however, have revised their plan somewhat in response to concerns aired by members of the Riverside Planning and Zoning Commission. In December, that commission recommended approving the parking variation, but imposed conditions on a second variation sought by the parish.

Initial plans submitted by the parish showed that construction related to the office addition would add about 1,200 square feet of impervious surface, something the Planning and Zoning Commission frowned upon.

The commission made its recommendation of the impervious surface variance conditioned on efforts by the parish to reduce that propose increase in impervious surface by at least 50 percent.

That will be accomplished by removing a section of sidewalk connecting the church and school near the south side of the school, narrowing the width of the walkway connecting the sidewalk along Herrick Road and the old school main entrance, and converting a planned asphalt island in the parking lot to a landscaped island.

As a result, the church no longer needed a variation related to impervious surfaces.

Rev. Thomas May, pastor of St. Mary Parish,

told the Landmark after the village board’s vote that he hopes the project can break ground in June. Parish officials are still working with the Archdiocese of Chicago on the plans, seeing if there may be ways to reduce some costs.

In 2015, St. Mary Parish embarked on a $2.93 million capital campaign to fund the construction of the office addition as well as other improvements, including renovating the first floor of the original school and improving heating and air-conditioning systems.

The fundraising campaign just topped the $2 million in pledges, May said.

Amazon packages found unopened in Brookfield alley If you live in Riverside’s First Division and you recently ordered a package through Amazon Prime but didn’t get it, you may want to contact the Brookfield Police Department.

On Jan. 16, a resident of the 3100 block of Sunnyside Avenue went to police after finding, next to her garbage can in the alley, a large bag containing 12 unopened Amazon Prime packages all addressed to residents on Fairbank, Scottswood and Bloomingbank roads in Riverside.

Brookfield police contacted Riverside police to see whether anyone had reported their packages had been stolen. No reports had been filed, and the boxes are being held in the evidence room at the Brookfield Police Department until detectives decide what step to take next.

ComEd scam A 60-year-old Oakbrook Terrace man contacted police on Jan. 16 after realizing he had been conned out of $1,000 by someone claiming he owed ComEd that amount for an electric bill related to a Brookfield commercial property.

The caller said a technician was on the way to the property and that unless he paid the bill immediately, the power would be cut off. According to the police report, the caller told the victim to buy “green dot” gift cards totaling $1,000 from a local pharmacy and to give him the numerical codes on the cards.

After following the caller’s demands, the victim realized he’d been scammed and contacted police.

Vehicle break-ins ■ Brookfield police charged a 17-year-old Brookfield boy with four counts of burglary after he allegedly stole items from vehicles parked in the 4100 block of Raymond Avenue, the 4200 block of Raymond Avenue and the 4200 block of Madison Avenue on the night of Jan. 15.

Police reportedly followed bicycle wheel marks in the snow from the scene of one burglary to the alleged offender’s home, where officers reported recovering items stolen from the vehicles.

■ Riverside police reported that someone had broken into three unlocked vehicles parked near the village’s downtown district during the early morning hours of Jan. 20.

Someone looking to retrieve items from a vehicle parked in the alley behind the 100 block of Lincoln Avenue at about 1:50 a.m. saw someone inside the vehicle, rifling through it. The witness ran back inside to alert the owner, and the offender was gone by the time police arrived.

Police located two other unlocked vehicles, one in the first block of Forest Avenue and another in the first block of Lincoln

Avenue, which had been ransacked. Both owners stated that cash was missing from the vehicles.

Alcohol, drugs and a gun A 27-year-old Waukegan man faces weapons and drug charges after he allegedly was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun without a permit, possession of cocaine and cannabis and transporting open alcohol while driving without headlights in the 7200 block of Cermak Road, North Riverside, on Jan. 21 at about 2:20 a.m.

The driver, identified as Eric F. Martinez, reportedly was driving on a suspended license and exhibited signs of intoxication, although a portable breath test indicated that his bloodalcohol content was slightly below the legal limit of .08.

Police reported recovering two cups containing alcohol from the center console and an open bottle of cognac from the back seat in addition to the drugs and the handgun, which reportedly was in Martinez’s pants pocket.

He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and two drug-related misdemeanors, in addition to being cited for illegal transportation of open alcohol.

TAX TIPS TO CONSIDER FOR CASH-INTENSIVE SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE SHARING ECONOMY

Small business owners that offer goods and services through an online platform may be part of the sharing economy. Some participate part time while others operate full time.

Activities such as ride sharing, freelancing, renting a spare bedroom and crowd funding are usually taxable. The IRS has a Sharing Economy Tax Center to help these taxpayers find the information they need to meet their tax obligations. Following are some sharing economy tips for small businesses.

Taxes: Sharing economy activity is generally taxable. Payments received in the form of money, goods, property or services may require filing a tax return to report that income to the IRS. Tips: People often conduct sharing-economy activities electronically but tips in cash are still a common occurrence. Tips are generally subject to withholding. Small businesses or self-employed persons should report tips they receive as income on Schedule C or C-EZ. See Publication 334, Tax Guide for Small Business, for more details.

Large Cash Amounts: Any person in a trade

or business who receives more than $10,000 in cash in a single transaction or in related transactions must file Form 8300, Report of Cash Payments Over $10,000 Received in a Trade or Business, within 15 days after receiving payment.

Deductions: Expenses to carry on a trade or business are usually deductible. Examples include claiming the 53.5 cents per mile rate for 2017 when using a car for a ride-sharing business. Or deducting the commission/fee charged by a freelancer marketplace service.

Estimated Payments: Small businesses in the sharing economy often need to make quarterly estimated tax payments to cover their tax obligation. Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals, will help to figure these payments. IRS Direct Pay is the fastest and easiest way to make these payments. The Treasury Department’s (EFTPS) system is also an option.

Driving on three tires Riverside police charged a 22-year-old Wood Dale man with driving under the influence of alcohol and cited him for several traffic offenses after an officer on patrol spotted him driving a 2008 Kia van with just three tires northbound on First Avenue at Parkview Road on Jan. 21 at about 1:50 a.m.

The Kia was traveling very slowly, said police, because one of the vehicle’s tires was missing and the exposed rim was throwing up sparks from the pavement. Police stopped the vehicle at Ridgewood Road and reported seeing open bottles of beer on the front and back seats.

The driver reportedly told police he’d been drinking in Oak Brook, Summit and Chicago and was on his way to Bellwood when his van struck a pot hole on First Avenue, causing the tire blowout.

In addition to DUI, police cited the driver for having a suspended license, operating an uninsured vehicle and illegal transportation of alcohol.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Jan. 15-21, 2018 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

THE LANDMARK VIEW

An open book

W

hen the Brookfield Village Board approved its landmark Station Area Zoning District code, we supported the concept and still do.

The code relies not on strict sets of measurements – for building height, setback, lot coverage, etc. – but on what the residents of the village would actually like to see built. It talks about types of building, design standards, parking, landscaping, acceptable building materials, commercial uses.

One of the main goals of the new code was to keep from bogging down or disincentivizing developers from coming forward at all because of the prospect of being dragged through a long planning and zoning process, where plans are often redesigned by committee to their detriment.

The Station Area Zoning Code eliminates the tedious review by the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission entirely and leaves approval up to village staff.

That places great responsibility on staff to be as open as possible with the public in regard to what is being proposed and when.

Development companies, being private business, are under no obligation to reveal their plans for a particular property. Rather, development companies like to keep plans under wraps as long as possible, not wanting to endanger any plan before it’s received an OK. Tartan Builders, a suburban development company, bought an old realty office on Burlington Avenue in Brookfield last summer.

Clearly the plan was the redevelop it, but the developer has been reluctant to give out much detail. Totally understandable.

While the company had clearly been kicking around ideas with village planning staff, the range of ideas wasn’t made public.

Even that is understandable, since it could be argued that some of the options were not particularly desirable or even being seriously considered.

But when the developer formally asked for the property to be rezoned from a residential use to mixed use, then we feel it’s appropriate for the public to know what’s on the table.

The application for rezoning did not include any plans for exactly what was being planned for the rezoned property. When we asked village staff to see them, they hesitated, wanting to clear it with the development company first.

The plans could still change, we were told, so things were still somewhat preliminary.

So, the Landmark filed a Freedom of Information request and got proposed renderings and site plans of what was being proposed.

It was about what we’d expected – a medium-height, mixed-use development of the type clearly being sought in the Station Area Zoning Code. We shouldn’t have to FOIA those plans.

One of the fears expressed prior to the passage of the updated code was that developments would be sprung on residents, who would have no recourse or input because staff had already given them a seal of approval.

But residents ought to be able to see, ahead of time, what’s coming to their downtown and how it may impact their lives.

When the Station Area Zoning Code was passed we called it something to the effect of “planning for adults.”

That goes for more than just village staff and developers.

Residents are adults, too, and should be included in the circle of trust. After all, residents are the ones who will be living with the results.

Loved my typewriter, but it had its day

E

verything old is new again or so it would seem after seeing an ad for a typewriter -- not an old one, but a new one. Many of you will remember the typewriter, the thing we used to write term papers on before computers. It was an item every student went off to college with. Now, of course, it is a laptop or computer of some kind.

I still have my off-to-college portable typewriter, a Royal. It is powder blue and in a sturdy case. My mother had always encouraged me to take typing, which of course I didn’t.

I preferred to use the hunt and peck method or the Catholic method -- seek and ye shall find. Somehow, those methods have worked for me even as I use the computer.

Looking back to the archaic way I did my column when writing for another local paper, I am thankful for my computer until it decides to use its own mind and I am in a bind as deadline looms.

Who can forget those typewriter years -- searching for the correct typewriter ribbon, black, red, or black and red.

One great advantage of the computer is the delete key. There’s no more whiting out mistakes or having to use the white-out tape which you placed over the mistakes. If things got too screwed up, there was no choice but to pull out the paper and start over; that was time spent I will never get back. I don’t even want to remember when the paper would jam or be uneven, I shudder to think about it.

Honestly, I question why anyone would want to go back to the typewriter, even if it was one of the electric models. The only advantage would be if there is a power outage.

So in my basement sits a powder blue portable typewriter that went off to Salina, Kansas, for college and back to Riverside to write columns.

It is one of those things that will not land out on the driveway for garbage pickup, but I’m not sure where it will end up. It certainly won’t end up in the will for any of my tech-savvy family.

If anybody is interested let me know. It only typed true news and true facts.

Experience that won’t be forgotten A while back I related a possible telepathy contact with a special person. Just before Christmas, I brought a special package to Kim, the lady mentioned in my prior letter.

I was greeted at the door by Kim’s family, who told me she had died the previous night in her sleep from a heart attack. When they realized I was the one bringing her packages on a regular basis, they treated me like family.

They intended to sort all of her belongings and get them to others in need, hopefully with my help. Ten days later, they called and loaded the ’73 Caddy, top to bottom and front to back (twice), and directed me to

The cache included food, clothes, housewares and a few gift cards and cash that Kim had received earlier.

I got most distributed to the needy and the rest to AMVETS. Needless to say, Kim’s family helped many, just like she had. They were a special, loving group.

At Kim’s wake, I saw a once-in-a-lifetime vision.

Kim’s face was aglow, with a perfect smile, showing total love and goodness. An angel among us. I will remember this forever.

Robert Ambroz, 82 Stationary engineer Robert W. Ambroz, 82, of North Riverside, died on Jan. 20, 2018 at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital.

Born on July 5, 1935, he served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked as a stationary engineer for hospitals and enjoyed camping.

Mr. Ambroz was the husband of the late Carol A. (nee Ule); the father of Michael (late Michele) Ambroz and Sharon Ambroz; the grandfather of Michael and Madelyn Ambroz; and a dear friend to his extended family at Indian Creek Ranch in Morris.

Cremation was Private with interment at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Brookfield officials scrapped the Metra station area improvements last fall after getting high bids for the work. The village has rebid the work and expects to announce the results of that process early in February.

Timing is everything for LTHS swimming Two-time defending state champs are eager for postseason

“A wizard is never late nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he wants to,” is one of Scott Walker’s favorite quotes.

The Lyons Township High School boys swimming coach could certainly apply this “The Lord of the Rings” quote to his team.

Over the past two seasons, the Lions have arrived when it’s mattered most to win a pair of state championships.

“I just want this group of 10 young men to come together as a team,” Walker said.

“Then as a single unit, explode at the right time.”

Until the right time (aka state finals) arrives, LTHS is content to work hard and improve as a team.

“I think our experience is a bonus,” Walker said. “Technically, we are swimming faster than we were this time last year.”

The Lions defeated well regarded Oak Park and River Forest 121-65 in a conference dual meet on Jan. 19.

“I thought we swam really well [against OPRF] especially after an outstanding week of some very tough workouts,” Walker said.

With the Downers Grove South Regional just a week away (Jan. 31), the RiversideBrookfield High School girls gymnastics team is very optimistic.

“Our team is healthy and confident heading into the postseason,” RBHS freshman Nina Tomas said. “My team and coaches are amazing. I am very excited about our upcoming meet at Downers Grove South. I expect us to do our best and perform confidently.”

The Bulldogs closed out their home meets by winning the Riverside-Brookfield Invite on Jan. 20. RBHS (130.63) dominated the eight-team field with five of the top eight all-around performers.

“It is super helpful to have so many strong all-arounders,” RBHS sophomore Amber O’Brien said. “We are a team so

O’Brien finished first in all-around with a score of 34.6 and Tomas took second at 32.705.

Other notable all-around scores for RBHS included senior Katie Polanski (6th place/31.2), freshman Amber Mia Giurini (7th/31.0) and O’Brien sophomore Sydney Lindenberg (8th/30.425).

Following the champion Bulldogs, Homewood-Flossmoor was the runner-up with a score of 121.825 and Glenbard South placed third at 112.975 in team standings.

Individually, Homewood-Flossmoor’s Nyela Cowan (32.2), Glenbard South’s Katie Kibbey (32.0) and George Washing-

ton’s Alexis Sotelo (31.525) finished third through fifth in all-around.

RBHS produced the winner and runner-up in all four events. In vault, Polanski was first with a score of 8.6 and O’Brien second at 8.5.

Tomas won bars (8.25) and O’Brien placed second (8.15).

O’Brien took first in both the beam (8.7) and floor (9.25).

Polanski earned second in beam at 8.35 and Giurini notched second in floor at 8.8.

“Our team did really well getting first place,” Polanski said. “We had some struggles on bars including myself, but our last events were really solid. It really helps that we have a lot of strong all-arounders because it helps us achieve our goal of a 130 score.”

Spencer Walker, who has committed to Alabama, cruised to the 100-yard backstroke title with a time of 50.53 seconds. Diego Pareja, the runner-up from OPRF, touched the wall at 56.59. Spencer Walker also swam a leg of the Lions’ 200-yard medley and 400yard freestyle relays which both finished first.

“It’s been a special run for Spencer,” Scott Walker said. “He is undefeated in all of his individual events this season. He has set five pool records as well as numerous meet records.”

The Virginia Tech-bound Claesson placed first in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.62) and 100-yard butterfly (50.77).

Other individual events winners for LTHS included Jack Thorell (22.43, 50-yard freestyle), Frank McCarter (49.73, 100-yard freestyle), Henry Olenec (5:09.00, 500-yard freestyle) and Michael Walsh (1:00.54, 100-yard breaststroke).

“We have found a young sprinter in Jack Thorell,” Scott Walker said. “He’s been fun to watch coming into something special.”

The Lions host their own invite on Saturday, Jan. 27 and then travel to York for the West Suburban Silver Championships on Feb. 3.

“Our varsity pretty much [trains hard] through conference and the primary focus becomes sectionals and state,” Scott Walker said.

Bulldogs boys hoops crush Chicago Christian Veon and Vaia spark resurgence for RBHS

round the holidays, the Riverside-Brookfield High School boys basketball team caught fire offensively. The Bulldogs haven’t looked back, sharing the basketball to create open shots with increased regularity since the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic.

The most recent evidence of their improved play (RBHS has won 11 of 15 games) occurred against Chicago Christian. Four players scored in double figures to power the Bulldogs past the Knights 81-57 in a Metro Suburban Conference crossover.

RBHS controlled the game completely, with leads of 5032 at halftime and 72-42 after three quarters.

MIKE REINGRUBER “We came out RBHS coach clicking on all cylinders,” RBHS coach Mike Reingruber said. “The guys were locked in on both ends of the floor. We shot extremely well in the first half and came out just as strong in the second half.”

Junior forward Andrew Veon led the way with 16 points, six rebounds and a dunk, while senior point guard Zach Vaia had a double-double of 15 points and 13 assists and no turnovers.

“I love how our guys are guys are all playing for each other,” Reingruber said.

Ryan Cicenas added 13 points and Patrick Hanley 11 points as RBHS made 14 threepointers. The Bulldogs had assists on 26 of 32 field goals.

“We still have an opportunity to reach one of our goals which is winning a conference title,” Reingruber said.

RBHS (12-9, 5-1 Metro Suburban Conference) visits Immaculate Conception on Friday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. in Elmhurst.

The Friars earned a split for the weekend with a 60-52 victory in overtime at St. Rita.

Steward scored 24 points and Nixon also reached double figures scoring with 12.

RBHS girls basketball Freshman guard Brenna Loftus scored 17 points and Leah Rettke contributed nine points and seven rebounds in a 45-39 victory against Leyden. Sarah JnoBaptiste and Maddie Meehan contributed eight points apiece for RBHS. Although the Bulldogs struggled from the field (15-for-57 for 26 percent), they made 12 of 16 free throws and scored 18 points off turnovers and secondchance points.

The Bulldogs routed Wheaton Academy 74-21 in their other game last week. Loftus (16 points) and JnoBaptiste (14 points) led RBHS, which had 11 players score. RBHS also scored a whopping 40 points off turnovers.

RBHS senior DeMar Pierce (27-8) won three matches en route to the 160-pound title. After winning his first two matches via pins, Pierce edged Walther Lutheran’s Jeremiah Canada 6-5 in a compelling final.

Runners-up for RBHS included sophomore Corey Dishmon (126), junior Dominic Rowe (170) and senior Vince Galvan (182).

Fenwick wrestling The Friars finished seventh out of 16 teams with a score of 71 at the Chicago Catholic League Championships. Montini won the title with 344.5 points, with Mount Carmel second (265.5) and Marmion third (204).

Fenwick sophomore Jacob Kaminski (20-2) advanced to the 195-pound title bout, losing to Montini’s Pete Christensen via a fall at the 3:34 mark of the match.

Friars’ Adam Zuber and Aidan Flaherty both finished fourth in the 132- and 182-pound classes, respectively.

LEGAL NOTICE ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS RIVER FOREST, ILLINOIS Public Notice is hereby given that a public hearing will be held by the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Village of River Forest, County of Cook, State of Illinois, on Wednesday, February 8, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Room of the Municipal Complex, 400 Park Avenue, River Forest, Illinois on the following matter: The Zoning Board of Appeals will consider a zoning variation application submitted by Maureen Huston, owner of the property at 631 Edgewood Place, who is proposing to construct a detached garage.

The Zoning Code requires a side yard setback equal to 10% of the lot width or 5 feet, whichever is greater. The lot frontage is 95.79 feet wide, requiring a minimum side yard setback of 9.58 feet. The applicant proposes to construct the garage so that the corner of the garage nearest to the southwesterly property line will have a setback of only 3 feet.

The Zoning Code requires the roof eave to maintain a minimum 3’-0” side yard setback. The applicant proposes to construct the garage so that the corner of the roof eave of the garage nearest to the southwesterly property line will have a setback of only 2 feet.

The Zoning Code requires a minimum combined side yard setback equal to 25% of the lot width or 10 feet, whichever is greater. Based on the lot frontage of 95.79 feet, the combined side yard setback is required to be about 23.95 feet.

With an existing setback of 14.02 feet from the existing house to the northeasterly side property line plus the proposed 3 foot setback for the garage, the proposed combined side yard setback is only 17.02 feet.
