The Cook County State’s Attorney has charged a 20-year-old Riverside man with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm for allegedly shooting a 19-year-old Broadview man twice during a drug deal that went sideways at a Forest Avenue apartment complex on Jan. 26 at about 7 p.m.

Police arrested Nicholas M. Radkiewicz in front of the Riverside Police Department at about 4 p.m. on Jan. 27.

Officers were pulling out of the police station parking lot in order to get a video statement from the victim at Loyola University Medical Center when they recognized Radkiewicz, who told them he was there to surrender.

Grant to help broaden library’s home delivery program

With funding largely in place and a design concept agreed upon by trustees, the Brookfield Public Library’s board of trustees approved a contract with its architectural firm, Product Architecture and Design, for the design and construction of a new 21,000-squarefoot library at 3541 Park Ave. The new facility, which will have two above-ground stories and a full lower level, will replace the library’s existing facility, across Lincoln Avenue at 3609 Grand Blvd., which will be demolished upon completion of the new building. The site of the present library will be turned into a parking lot and green space.

According to the contract, the total budget for the work is estimated at about $9.2 million. The architect’s fee, which is included in that figure, is $770,000. Fees for additional services are also outlined in the contract.

A new contract with Product Architecture and Design was necessary, said Library Director Kimberly Coughran, because the scope of their services had changed significantly since they were first hired last February.

Initially, the firm was hired to explore renovating the existing library. With the decision to scrap a renovation effort in favor of constructing a new library, the fee being paid to Product Architecture and Design also needed to change, although the fee as a percentage of the total cost did not change, Coughran said.

If the scope of the project increases in the future, the architect’s fee will be 8 percent of the added value.

Coughran said architects are on schedule to submit a planned development application to the village of Brookfield’s Community and Economic Development Department in March and that library officials will be meeting with the village to discuss the project prior to that submittal to get input and direction.

Exactly when library officials and their architects will appear before the Planning and Zoning Commission to begin the planned development process depends on how long it takes the village to review the application and make recommendations.

The hope is for the public approval process to start this spring. Assuming the project is approved by the village board in a timely manner, construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in spring 2020.

Financing of the project is coming from several sources. The library over the last several years has been transferring money from its general operating fund to a special reserve fund to build a construction fund.

After the library board approved transferring another $600,000 in December, that special reserve fund now stands at about $5.9 million.

In addition, the library has accepted a $1 million gift from Brookfield businesswoman Linda Sokol Francis and has lined up a loan of up to $3.5 million from the First National Bank of Brookfield.

Age Options, a suburban nonprofit agency that provides resources and services for senior citizens, has awarded a $12,000 grant to the Brookfield Public Library, which will be used to help broaden the reach of the library’s home delivery service for local seniors.

Brookfield Public Library has offered the delivery service for senior citizens and others who are unable to get to the library since 2006, said Christy Eyre, the library’s partnerships and public relations librarian.

According to Eyre, just a handful of residents, many of them living at Cantata Adult Life Services, fill out forms to sign up for the program and contact the library about materials.

“Once the materials are available for them we set up a time to drop them off with the member,” Eyre said. “The deliveries have traditionally been done by library staff.”

The Age Options grant will allow the library’s home delivery program to broaden its reach. Eyre said the library now has two new partners to make deliveries. One is a library volunteer and the other will come from Interfaith Community Partners in LaGrange.

“With the additional partners, we’ll be able to make deliveries more often and on a consistent schedule,” Eyre said.

In addition to Francis’ bequest – which came with an agreement to change the name of the library to the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library – the foundation hopes to raise an additional $400,000.

In December 2018, the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank of Brookfield combined to donate $50,000 to the foundation to underwrite the new library’s planned 110-seat meeting room.

Other organizations have expressed interest in making other donations to underwrite other aspects of the library. The foundation, meanwhile, is planning to host “micro” capital campaign events in the homes of foundation members and library trustees.

A Lyons man arrested in October 2017 and charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon following an altercation involving two other men on the Barrypoint Road bridge has been sentenced to three years in prison for the offense.

On Jan. 15 during a hearing at the Maybrook courthouse, 22-year-old Amir Johnson pleaded guilty to the charge. Judge Pamela A. Leeming presided over the case.

The incident happened on the afternoon of Oct. 4, 2017, when Johnson, who was on a bicycle, encountered two men who were in a vehicle near Ogden and Joliet avenues. All three men, who police say were members of street gangs, knew each other from a prior altercation.

Johnson fled on his bicycle toward Riverside, but the two men drove after him and confronted Johnson on the bridge, throwing his bicycle into the river. Johnson responded by pulling a handgun from his backpack and pointing it at the two.

When they didn’t back down, Johnson ran to the intersection of Barrypoint and Fairbank roads where the driver of a passing vehicle, believing Johnson to be the victim of a crime, invited him into his car and began driving him to the Riverside police station.

A short time later Johnson told the driver to stop, got out, threw the gun toward the river and ran back toward the bridge, where he was apprehended by police. Another officer detained the other two men, who were charged with mob action and reckless conduct. They later pleaded guilty, sentenced to one day time served and were released, said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel.

Officers spent six hours searching for the gun Johnson threw toward the river, finding it in a rocky, wooded area near the riverbank, about 300 feet west of the bridge.

An employee of Kay Jewelers at the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, contacted police on the afternoon of Jan. 18 to report that while performing an inventory of the store’s merchandise staff discovered that a 14-karat white gold diamond ring valued at $2,300 was missing.

The ring had last been inventoried by staff on Jan. 13, according to the police report.

A resident of the 3100 block of Prairie Avenue, Brookfield, called police on Jan. 22 just before midnight after seeing an unknown man wearing all black wandering around his property.

At first the resident saw the man sitting on

his front porch, but the man silently walked away when the resident opened the front door.

A short time later, the resident went out his back door and noticed the service door to his garage open.

Inside the garage, a refrigerator door was open and it appeared as if someone opened a bottle of wine and took a drink from it. The resident exited his garage and saw the same man walking away through the gangway and was last seen running southbound on Prairie Avenue.

Reckless driving North Riverside police cited a man who reportedly drove his red Ford at speeds upwards of 60 mph in a 15 mph zone while traveling south approaching 25th Street on the ring road in the parking lot of the North Riverside Park Mall on Jan. 16 at about 9:55 p.m.

The vehicle blew through the stop sign at 25th Street and continued at a high rate of speed until a police officer was able to catch up with and stop the vehicle on the west side of the mall.

Police issued the driver tickets for reckless driving, disobeying a stop sign and speeding.

Drug-related crash A 69-year-old Hometown man told police he’d snorted heroin from a bag just prior to rear ending one vehicle while southbound on Harlem Avenue at Lindberg Road in Riverside and then losing control of his 1999 Toyota, which left the roadway, took down a traffic signal at Addison Road and then slammed into a parked car in the 3200 block of Harlem Avenue, which set off a chain reaction of crashes damaging three more parked cars on Jan. 27 at about 6 p.m.

Police found the heavily damaged Toyota and the driver just west of Harlem Avenue on Herrick Road. A passenger in the vehicle had fled the scene, said police, who were not able to locate him.

The driver appeared to be under the influence of some sort of narcotic. Police reported finding a small plastic bag containing a white powder residue and also a short straw containing the same residue in the back seat area.

Police charged the driver with driving under the influence of drugs and cited him for leaving the scene of an accident and several other traffic offenses.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Jan. 15-27 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Riverside officials say no to Berkeley closure Cul-de-sac deemed infeasible, some residents fear limited access

A request by a Riverside resident to place a cul-de-sac on Berkeley Road near Harlem Avenue was given the thumbs down earlier this month after the village’s police chief, fire chief and public works director recommended against it.

Steven O’Donnell, a resident of Berkeley Road, urged the village to block access to his street from Harlem Avenue last July after he was the victim of an apparent home invasion a month earlier.

O’Donnell and his wife were in bed at about 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning in June when someone rang the doorbell to their home.

They ignored it and shortly after heard the sounds of someone forcing open the side door to their home.

No one was injured and the offender fled when O’Donnell shouted and scared him off. The offender fled in a vehicle that drove across his neighbor’s front yard toward Harlem Avenue.

After that incident, O’Donnell approached the village board to see if Berkeley Road could be closed off to Harlem Avenue. Berkeley Road, he said at the time, “invites this sort

The option preferred by single-family home owners in the neighborhood and illustrated in a proposal signed by 20 residents of Berkeley and Byrd roads proposed excavating Berkeley Road east of a driveway leading to a townhome development north of Berkeley Road, shutting off all access from Harlem Avenue.

Neighbors also proposed the village buying all of the commercial property on Harlem Avenue between Berkeley and Longcommon roads or just the vacant property at 2704 Harlem Ave. and turning it into greenspace.

After O’Donnell made his request last summer, village officials collected some traffic and crime data and visited the site to see if a cul-de-sac was feasible.

One problem with excavating the street east of the townhouse driveway all the way to Harlem Avenue, said officials, was problematic because doing so would need approval from the Illinois Department of Transportation, since Harlem Avenue is a state highway.

A cul-de-sac east of the townhome driveway also posed problems. Public Works Director Edward Bailey said that in order for snowplows to be able to navigate a cul-de-sac its size would necessitate claiming the parkway and perhaps some private property.

“A cul-de-sac would be a substantial reconfiguration of that area with a big impact on public and private property there,” Bailey

told trustees at their regular meeting on Jan. 17.

In addition, while the village’s manager, police chief, fire chief and public works director were making a visit to the site last October, residents of the townhomes approached them and asked them to keep access to Harlem Avenue open.

The Berkeley and Byrd residents’ plan would have forced the townhome owners to enter and leave the village from Longcommon Road via Berkeley and Byrd roads.

“They were worried about limited access,” said Fire Chief Matthew Buckley.

Police conducted traffic counts on Berkeley Road during a week last October and found them to be very low, about 32 vehicles per day.

“The traffic volume is low and the speed is low,” said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel.

Crime historically has also not been an issue in that neighborhood, Weitzel said, with fewer than five criminal incidents in the past eight years.

“We didn’t think it rose to the occasion of shutting down the street,” Weitzel said, adding that if the village does move forward with its surveillance camera program, it could place one of the cameras at the Berkeley/Harlem entrance.

Mayor calls limiting mini-casinos to 10 ‘reasonable’

For the past couple of years, every now and again, someone would stand up at a North Riverside Village Board meeting and express some concern over the number of establishments offering video gambling.

In particular, the worry was over the number of freestanding gambling parlors. “Just how many is enough?” they would ask. Now there’s an answer.

On Jan. 21, North Riverside trustees voted 5 to 0 to cap the number of gambling parlors at 10.

“I had been asked by residents and trustees if there was going to be a limit,” said Mayor Hubert Hermanek Jr. “You have to be tactful about it. I think 10 is a reasonable limit.”

At present, the village has eight gambling parlors with half of them strung out along Cermak Road west of First Avenue.

Cermak Road is also home to two bar/ restaurants offering gambling and there are two non-traditional gambling locations along the street as well – one inside a gas station minimart and one inside a liquor store.

Hermanek said he gets fairly regular inquiries from parties seeking information about opening a video gambling businesses in North Riverside.

“We’re not saturated yet, but we can’t have them every third storefront,” Hermanek said. “It’s first come, first served. These [licenses] are not going to last forever.”

While there are no applications in front of village officials right now, Hermanek said he’s heard that the owner of Cardinal Liquors, 8340 Cermak Road, is thinking of decreasing the size of his retail operation in order to build out a gambling café next to it.

Video gambling has become an important and growing source of revenue since the

first establishments installed the machines back in 2013.

In 2018, the village of North Riverside’s share of the state’s video gambling tax was $250,215. That represented a 26-percent increase over 2017 and a 119-percent increase since 2015.

On top of that revenue, North Riverside charges standalone gambling parlors significantly more for liquor licenses than regular restaurants and bars that offer video gambling.

While a bar or restaurant owner will fork over a little more than $3,000 annually for a liquor license, if you’re operating a video gambling parlor you can expect to pay either $13,000 or $15,000 depending on whether you’re offering just beer and wine or if you’re offering hard liquor as well.

The gambling parlors owned by corporations that operate several establishments throughout the state typically pay the high license fee without question. Hermanek did say, however, that this year a couple of the smaller companies asked if they could expect another increase in the fees next year.

With more than $100,000 in fees being collected for the gambling parlor liquor licenses annually, on top of the village’s share of state taxes, residents have not voiced too many objections.

“It softens their concerns, knowing how much revenue we’re gaining,” Hermanek said. “But there is a point where there can be too many.”

Rec department gives green light with sudden temp plunge

Just a couple of weeks ago, Riverside recreation Director Ron Malchiodi was on the verge of abandoning plans to set up the outdoor ice rink in Big Ball Park at Longcommon and Delaplaine road.

Through mid-January temperatures just hadn’t gotten cold enough to freeze the ground and maintain a hard sheet of ice.

Then he saw this week’s forecast – and its below-zero temperatures -- and called members of the Big Chill Crew, the volunteers who help set up the liner, fill it with water and maintain the surface afterwards.

It’s a late start for the rink this year, but Malchiodi hopes residents will get a good month of use out of it.

“We are going to give it a whirl just based on the temperatures,” Malchiodi said. “We’re

hoping for an extension of at least freezing temps through February to get the maximum use out of it. … It’s definitely something we want to offer the community, so we’re just hoping the weather will cooperate in the long term.”

Deputy Fire Chief William Sherman, who is a member of the Big Chill Crew, was on hand last Friday to supervise laying down the plastic liner for the 102-by-175-foot ice rink, and on Jan. 26 he oversaw filling up the liner by using a hose connected to a nearby fire hydrant.

“The Big Chill emails have been flying back and forth,” said Sherman of the efforts to mobilize a crew that included his kids and their friends as well as other longtime adult volunteers.

In addition to being Riverside’s deputy fire chief, the 65-year-old Sherman is also an avid hockey player, as are his now-adult children.

“I’m always out there [on the rink at Big Ball Park] with my kids,” said Sherman. “I like to get it going.”

One of the reasons Malchiodi had contemplated calling off the ice rink this year is that the liner is pretty expensive. For several years the Riverside Junior Woman’s Charity

Malchiodi said for the past five years or so, the Department of Parks and Recreation has taken on the expense in order to allow the Juniors to concentrate donations on their core charities.

While a couple of days in a row in the mid30s isn’t a terrible thing for the rink – that can serve as kind of a natural Zamboni and help

resurface the ice – a streak of temperatures in the 40s can simply shut the rink down for good.

So, if the weather forecast is on the edge of freezing, setting up the rink can be dicey.

If the rink is only in use for a couple of weeks, “that’s a lose-lose for the department and the village,” said Malchiodi. “We want to provide this for the community, but we need to be fiscally responsible.”

Top superintendent choice passes on District 103 Says board politics made him shy away

The first choice for the job of superintendent at Lyons School District 103 turned down the school board’s job offer last week and will become the superintendent of another school district.

“I was very disappointed because I really liked the candidate,” said school board President Marge Hubacek.

The political divisions in Lyons District 103 played a major role in the candidate’s decision to turn down the job. After the man turned down the district’s job offer on Jan. 22, Co-interim Superintendent Patrick Patt asked him why.

The candidate sent a short email to Patt with his explanation, which Patt read at the school board’s Jan. 28 meeting.

“My decision to go with the other district was based on the past political nature in Lyons and the upcoming spring election of the Lyons school board positions,” the top choice wrote.

Control of the school board is at stake in April. If candidates backed by Lyons Village

President Christopher Getty sweep all four seats, they would become the majority.

“The reason he turned it down was because of the politics, and most of all, the upcoming election,” Hubacek said. “Nobody can guarantee the outcome.”

The candidate who turned the job down was one of two finalists that the board interviewed for the second time two weeks ago. Another finalist declined the final interview.

The Landmark has learned that the board interviewed former District 103 curriculum director Kelly Baas, who is now the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in Westchester School District 92.5. Baas resigned from her job in District 103 to take her current position in 2016.

However, Baas is not believed to be one of the board’s two current final choices.

The school board last week interviewed one person who was identified as a finalist. The other finalist was one of the eight semifinalists the board had interviewed in December.

The two new finalists were slated to tour the district and meet with separate committees of teachers and staff, administrators and parents this week. Those three committees will give their feedback to the board.

Hubacek said she was impressed by both candidates and that said that she expects the

board to make a decision and extend another job offer very soon.

“We have two good candidates,” Hubacek said.

While reading the email from the person who turned down the job, Patt referred to incumbents Jorge Torres and Michael Bennett by name, asking them to take note of the top choice’s reasoning.

Bennett and Torres were backed by Getty in 2015 when they were elected to the school board. Bennett was president of the board until the majority flipped again in 2017.

Patt said that political interference is causing the district to lose out on good candidates and that good employees will leave the district if politics interferes with the running of the schools.

Asked about Patt’s comments after the meeting, Bennett had a succinct response.

“I am just tired of the grandstanding, that’s all,” Bennett said.

According to Patt and Hubacek, Bennett, whose wife recently had a baby, had not attended any of the interviews with superintendent candidates until last week when he attended the interviews with the two new finalists.

In response to a question from Patt, Torres acknowledged that he had liked the candidate who turned the job town. Coming back from closed session Torres and Patt

had a brief exchange.

“I don’t like being called a liar,” Torres told Patt. “That shows disrespect.”

After the meeting, Patt told the Landmark the he believes Torres gave a television station false information about how long administrators had known that a George Washington Middle School teacher hired last summer had been charged with attempted murder.

Patt said that the teacher, Andres Rodriguez, was placed on administrative leave the day after administrators learned he was facing criminal charges.

In his superintendent’s report, Patt also called out state Sen. Martin Sandoval who publicly had called on Patt and fellow Co-interim Superintendent Robert Madonia to resign in the wake of the hiring of Rodriguez.

Sandoval did so at a packed school board meeting on Oct. 22. In his public comment Sandoval said that he would introduce legislation in the Illinois General Assembly to make it easier for school districts to find out when teachers and other job applicants are facing criminal charges.

Thus far, Patt said, it didn’t appear that Sandoval had done much to fulfill his promise.

“Not a thing has happened legislatively,” Patt said. “If you want to say you’re going to do something, then make it happen.”

Attorney General: D103 violated open meetings act Despite handout, public comment limit was not formal policy

The Illinois Attorney’s General office has issued a binding opinion that Marge Hubacek, the president of the Lyons School District 103 Board of Education, violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act when she cut off public comment after about 20 minutes at contentious school board meeting last October.

The ruling, issued on Jan. 9 during Lisa Madigan’s last week as attorney general, stated that because the board had not set forth a formal rule in its policy manual, voted on and approved by the entire board, stating that public comment on any one topic was limited to 15 minutes it could not enforce such a rule, even though limit was set forth in a handout available at all school board meetings.

“Although the board stated that it relied on its welcome handout for a decade, the board did not demonstrate that it had taken action to establish or otherwise adopt the policies in the handout,” said Michael J. Luke, counsel to the attorney general in his ruling under Madigan’s name.

On Oct. 22, 2018, a standing-room crowd of approximately 100 people, plus some lo-

cal television news crews, attended a school board meeting in the wake of news that the district had hired a middle school teacher who is facing charges of attempted murder.

Nine people, including Lyons Village President Christopher Getty and state Sen. Martin Sandoval, had addressed the board during the public comment period when Hubacek cut off the public comment.

At the time, McCook Mayor and Cook County Board Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski was standing at the microphone waiting to speak.

Others were lined up behind him.

Seven of nine speakers who did publicly comment at the meeting were critical of the school board, with Sandoval calling for the co-interim superintendents to resign.

The decision to cut off public comment came after Brookfield resident Taylor Koch called for mass resignation of the school board.

Hubacek cut off public comment after about 20 minutes.

The binding opinion directed the board “to take appropriate action” to refrain “from applying unestablished and unrecorded rules to restrict public comment at future meeting meetings.”

Hubacek said she will ask the board to eventually take action to formally add the 15-minute rule to its official policy manual.

“If we’re supposed to have it in our policy, written in there, then we’re going to fix it,” Hubacek said.

Co-interim superintendent Robert Madonia said that the violation was a technicality.

“We just have to redo the policy and make it more formal, that’s all,” Madonia said. “It’s been a procedure for a long time. Any allegation that we had a 15-minute, three minutes per person format just for that meeting is not true.”

The complaint to the Attorney General’s Office was filed by Martin Stack, an attorney who served as the district’s director of human resources from late 2015 until 2017.

While working for District 103, Stack unsuccessfully ran for a spot on the Cook County Board of Review.

Stack had been hired by District 103 when the school board was controlled by members who were elected with the support of Getty.

Stack left the district after the Getty-backed faction lost its majority on the school board in 2017.

Stack, who lives in Western Springs, re-

sponded an email inquiry from the Landmark with the following statement: “The ruling speaks for itself,” Stack wrote.

“Obviously, Ms. Hubacek’s decision to curtail comments violated the Open Meetings Act. Her action was incompatible with the principles associated with free speech.”

The crowd that showed up at the Oct. 22 meeting was no accident. In addition to obvious concerns that parents had about having someone charged with attempted murder teaching sixth-grade English, there was an orchestrated attempt to generate a large crowd.

Fliers featuring the teacher’s mug shot were distributed in the district over the weekend preceding the Monday evening meeting.

Signs featuring the mug shot were posted along the Joliet Avenue near the school district headquarters, and the flier was being handed out by people outside the door of George Washington Middle School as people came to the meeting.

“It was strictly a political circus,” said Cointerim Superintendent Patrick Patt. “It was done to make a point. It wasn’t done because of concern for kids, or any of that.”

Hubacek also said that the entire issue had been politicalized.

By now, Skar had assumed all of the debt – loaned by Marshall Savings and Loan – related to both the new Sahara North and its smaller cousin, the Sahara Inn South, in Chicago, amounting to a little more than $10 million.

His mob partner, Rocco DeStefano, forced Skar to buy him out – using proceeds from a new loan from Marshall Savings to do so.

Skar was now on the hook for a monthly mortgage payment to Marshall Savings of about $31,000.

Given the rocky past six months and all of the press attention related to Skar’s mob connections – and that of local and federal law enforcement as well as state regulators -- the officers of Marshall Savings and Loan had cause to feel uneasy about their investment.

When the newspapers hit the streets on the morning of Jan. 9, 1963, the Chicago Tribune carried some more bad news. Detectives from the Cook County Sheriff ’s police had raided the Sahara, seized “more than $6,000 worth of marijuana and arrested seven people.”

Among those arrested and charged with possession was none other than Manny Skar himself. He later was cleared by a grand jury, though a musician who worked at the motel was indicted.

On Jan. 11, based on what they’d found during the narcotics raid, county police reopened an investigation into the death of a former Sahara Inn cocktail waitress the previous July. In the meantime, after the drug raid Schiller Park authorities were pondering revoking the Sahara’s liquor license.

The squeeze was on.

In mid-February the Cook County state’s attorney subpoenaed construction records from the Sahara North and convened a grand jury to explore whether hundreds of thousands of dollars in building supplies had been stolen from a Cicero construction firm and used to build the Sahara North.

Skar sought refuge in Florida and stalled for time. On March 26, 1963, after a month of failing to provide the grand jury with the construction records, Cook County Chief Judge John Boyle ordered Skar to appear in court to show why he shouldn’t be held in contempt. By now, the value of the stolen building supplies believed to have been diverted to build the Sahara North topped $1 million.

In front of Judge Boyle on March 28, according to the Chicago Tribune, Skar “testified the records demanded by the jury disappeared while in transit by air from Florida to Chicago.”

On that same day, Marshall Savings and Loan initiated foreclosure proceedings on both the Sahara North and South. With that domino tipped, the rest would begin to fall.

The Autry-operated Sahara North opened its doors on Aug. 1, 1963. No longer catering to mobsters and no longer featuring an emcee in a metallic red tuxedo, the Sahara’s entertainment for the evening was billed as “Nancy Ames and the Gene Autry ‘Hootenanny,’” according to the Suburban Economist newspaper.

Although the advertising campaigns in print and on TV might have led some to believe otherwise, news of Marshal Savings and Loan’s foreclosure on the Sahara Inn was catastrophic.

In the weeks that followed, depositors panicked, withdrawing $10 million. Although new savings offset the run slightly, the net result was a net decrease in assets of $7.5 million.

“Without the immediate assistance of the Federal Home Loan Bank, for which we are most grateful, the result might well have been calamitous,” wrote Henry Moravec Jr. to the supervisor of the Illinois Department of Financial Institutions later in 1963.

The Landmark, January 30, 2019 Even with the Autry-Sahara deal in place, Marshall Savings was struggling to pay back the Federal Home Loan Bank. The S&L’s board meeting minutes from Aug. 20, 1963 indicate that Marshall Savings owed the bank $8 million, of which $3 million was already past due.

“The only way we can repay this loan is through a large cash flow of new savings or through the sale of the mortgage packages that are currently being offered, and since neither one of these sources have materialized, it is necessary to renew and keep renewing these notes as they come due every 30 or 60 days,” the meeting minutes state.

In September 1963, an examiner from the Federal Home Loan Bank put the hammer down in a memo analyzing Marshall Savings and Loan’s banking practices.

The bank examiner blasted Marshall Savings’ excessive advertising and giveaway programs, the S&L’s decision to concentrate loans to a few large borrowers, having just 55 percent of its loans be for homes and making risky loans to land trusts, over-appraising properties, the Sahara Motel loans, its growing percentage of slow-paying loans, its management practices and the makeup of its board of directors.

On the subject of the association’s management, the bank examiner used a particularly unusual transaction to illustrate “irresponsibility on the part of the participants and beneficiaries.”

Back in February 1963, Marshall Savings made a $420,000 loan to a corporation whose officers were Howard B. and Charlotte Quinn, who were directors at Beverly Savings and Loan. For security, the Quinns used vacant land which Marshall had appraised at $610,000. An independent appraiser had valued the property at $331,000.

On the very next day, Beverly Savings made two loans to Henry Moravec Sr. and Henry Moravec Jr. totaling $650,000. The purpose of the loan was for Marshall Savings to “obtain working capital.” Again, the bank examiner noted, the land offered as security for the loan was appraised far in excess of its actual value.

The Moravecs engaged in other practices that would have raised eyebrows. A lawsuit against the IRS filed in 1971 by a man named

Sol Diamond stated that he started serving as a mortgage broker for Marshall Savings in about 1960.

Diamond alleged in the suit that for brokering loans he was paid a commission, half of which he would kick back to the Moravecs by writing checks to a company called Real Consultant Associates or to someone named “M. Bonke.”

According to the lawsuit none of the other Marshall Savings and Loan officers or directors knew about the existence of Real Consultant Associates. As for “Bonke,” that was the maiden name of Henry Jr.’s wife.

By early 1964, the writing was on the wall.

A 1974 appellate court ruling in a lawsuit the Moravecs brought against the IRS states that in January 1964 the Moravecs were advised by “Illinois supervisory authorities that Marshall Savings was financially impaired and would be closed unless [they] disposed of their Marshall” shares.

By June, there was a tentative deal in place. A pair of contractors, Louis Verive and Anthony Navarroli, who had done fairly extensive business with Marshall Savings, would buy the Moravecs’ shares for $1.25 million, provided the buyers could prove Marshall was salvageable.

Initially, the deal collapsed, but on Oct. 26, 1964 it finally went through. The terms of the deal, while not altogether clear, reportedly were about the same. Verive and Navarroli provided the Moravecs $300,000 as an initial payment. That would turn out to be the only payment they would make.

The sale was announced in the press in November by Marshall Savings’ new acting president, William McGrath, a Wheaton attorney and former assistant corporation counsel for the city of Chicago.

The Moravecs were out of the banking business, but they weren’t out of the woods.

Gene Autry’s experience running the Sahara North was not a pleasant one.

On Sept. 16, 1963, a little more than a month after the Sahara North reopened under Autry’s management, a bomb went off in a stair-

well, causing about $1,000 in damage.

In the weeks following the reopening, Autry made it clear that the “hoodlums” who had populated the Sahara under Skar’s management were no longer welcome and had police actively ask them to leave or deny them entry.

The Cook County Sheriff ’s chief investigator told the Chicago Tribune that he believed “the bomb had been planted either as a warning or as vengeance for some act.

Autry shrugged off the bombing at a press conference in October, where he joked, “My Angels were bombed from third to ninth place in the American League, so I’ve been bombed all year.”

On Jan. 16, 1964, a more powerful bomb exploded in the parking lot of the Sahara North. No one was injured, but the blast blew out a dozen motel room windows, damaged several cars and reportedly could be heard two miles away.

Orchestra leader Fred Waring, who was staying at the motel at the time, told a reporter he was “knocked from his bed by the explosion.” Meanwhile, singer Allan Jones (perhaps most famous for his role as Ricardo Baroni in the 1935 Marx Brothers movie “A Night at the Opera”) said he was checking out immediately.

“I refuse to risk my life,” Jones told a Chicago Tribune reporter. Jones also said See MARSHALL on page 12

Autry continued to operate the Sahara North for another eight months, but in August he announced he was pulling out.

Marshall Savings and Loan “agreed to terminate the lease as soon as it can find ‘an adequate and proper’ operator.”

A spokesman for Autry told the Chicago Tribune that the bombings weren’t the reason the singing cowboy wanted out. Rather, he said, “the motel is too far from Autry’s other hotel interests in California.”

After being evicted from the Sahara Inn, Manny Skar’s troubles would only get worse.

In the aftermath of Skar’s preposterous explanation that Sahara North construction records had “disappeared” while he was en route from Florida to Chicago for a court appearance, Cook County Chief Judge John Boyle sentenced Skar to six months in jail for contempt of court.

Skar posted $10,000 bond and promised he’d come up with the records the court wanted “if they turn up.”

He had other problems, this time with his one-time patrons in the Chicago Outfit.

Tribune reporter Robert Wiedrich reported that Skar’s life had been threatened over a $35,000 debt owed to a mob-connected contractor who did work at the Sahara North.

When Marshall Savings foreclosed on the hotel, Skar reportedly told the contractor to get the money from the savings and loan, because he didn’t have any.

Wiedrich reported that a mobster who was a partner of the contractor’s told Skar “he would be ‘buried’ if he failed to pay the debt.”

In December of 1963, Skar vacationed in California. While nursing a scotch and

soda, his favorite drink, at a night club in Palm Springs, Skar got a visit from a man from Chicago, who repeated the warning.

In a panic, Skar reportedly called his old partner, Rocco DeStefano, who “told Skar he was in serious trouble.”

Without the Sahara to fund his lifestyle, Skar subsequently bought in to a couple of Rush Street night spots, according to Wiedrich, and also claimed a stake in a lounge on Devon Avenue.

How he funded those ventures is unclear but, according to Wiedrich, “was of interest to investigators since he claimed poverty” after the Sahara foreclosures. Skar, according to Wiedrich, again ran afoul of mob collectors when he balked at paying $500 a month “operating tax” the mob was levying.

In May 1964, Skar appeared briefly before a federal grand jury convened to probe organized crime in Chicago.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney’s Office was gathering evidence in anticipation of charging Skar with tax evasion. A federal grand jury convened in October 1964, just days before the Moravecs sold their interests in Marshall Savings.

And on Dec. 14, 1964, the Trib reported, the feds indicted Skar “for income tax evasion and for assisting in preparation of false special tax returns for the liquor concession” at the Sahara North and South.

Over a period of four years, the indictment read, Skar hadn’t reported more than $1.3 million in income and that he owned more than $700,000 in income taxes for 1961 and 1962. Skar, who faced up to 24 years in prison, posted bond.

Skar remained defiant.

Skar told reporters that he never had mob backing for the Sahara North, which no one was likely to believe.

More important, Skar complained, the new owners of Marshall Savings and Loan had leased the Sahara to a new management team for an offer far below two others that had been made by friends of his.

The Tribune’s Wiedrich reported that William McGrath, the new president of Marshall Savings, responded to the accusation by saying that Skar “has burned us up so much we wouldn’t do business with anyone he represents, even if were President John-

son. He is an albatross around our necks.”

In just two more weeks, none of it would matter, anyway.

As Marshall Savings and Loan opened its doors at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 31, 1964, two bank examiners from the Illinois Department of Financial Institutions walked in and announced that the state was seizing the institution and freezing all of its accounts.

The Chicago Tribune reported that about $40 million, or 40 percent of the S&L’s total assets, was delinquent by 90 or more days.

The state had given Marshall’s new owners 30 days to raise $5 million, and they had failed.

Savers wouldn’t see any of their money for months while Marshall’s owners battled in court to prevent the state from liquidating the savings and loan’s assets. In the end, the bank was liquidated, with the first checks representing federally insured deposits going out to depositors in April 1965.

For those who had deposits in excess of the $10,000 guaranteed by the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation, the wait would be years for any of that cash.

Lawsuits related to the uninsured funds would drag on until 1970.

the Tribune following the verdict indicated that he may have had to serve at least two months of that sentence.

Federal prosecutor Michael Nash was outraged at the judge allowing the Moravecs to plead “no contest” instead of “guilty” and asked for harsh sentences for both men.

“Men in similar positions in other institutions are watching to see what would happen if they steal this much money,” Nash is quoted as telling the judge in the Tribune report of the sentencing hearing.

Judge Parsons in announcing the sentences told the defendants, “I appreciate your not putting the court through a trial that might have lasted five or seven weeks,” according to the Tribune.

All of the Moravecs would melt from the Chicago area – Henry Jr. had long since moved to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin -- decamping to California.

Henry Moravec Sr. and his older brother, Jerome, died within a few months of each other in 1975. Henry Moravec Jr., now in his 80s, still resides in California. He could not be reached for this series.

His son, Henry Moravec III, an attorney in San Marino, California, who was just a toddler in the early 1960s, said his parents never spoke much about the savings and loan.

He said he’d been told his grandfather had sold the savings and loan in the mid-1960s, but details were scarce and family memorabilia from that period was lost.

Riverside man kidnapped in armed home invasion Offenders dump victim, who was severely beaten, in Chicago alley

Three men, one of them armed with a handgun, forced their way into a home in the 200 block of West Quincy Street early on Jan. 25, ransacking the place, pistol-whipping a woman who lived there and kidnapping her son.

The son, who Police Chief Thomas Weitzel described as in his early 20s, was “pretty severely” beaten by his abductors and then dumped in an alley in the 4300 block of West 47th Street in Chicago, where Chicago police found him.

Paramedics transported the victim to MacNeal Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The victim’s mother was also taken to the hospital for treatment of a head injury as a result of being pistol-whipped by one of the offenders.

Both were later released from the hospital and police have followed up with interviews with them, Weitzel said.

A 16-year-old girl who was also in the house at the time of the home invasion was not injured. A juvenile specialist from the Proviso Township Children’s Advocacy Center conducted a forensic interview with the girl in the company of police detectives on Jan. 25.

“Obviously it was a very violent home invasion,” Weitzel said. “But it’s clear this was

When the victim’s mother protested, a man armed with a pistol reportedly struck her in the head with the gun to get her to comply. Weitzel said the men “tore through the house,” as if they were trying to find something before blindfolding the victim and kidnapping him.

Riverside police broadcast a description of the vehicles involved in the home invasion and a Berwyn police officer spotted one of them — it’s not clear at this time which one — and tried to stop it. The vehicle sped away and barreled down Harlem Avenue and then I-55 at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Police used ATVs from the Cook County Department of Homeland Security to search for a handgun, which reportedly was thrown from the vehicle during the chase, in the snow-covered grassy areas along inbound I-55 from Harlem Avenue to Central Avenue, Weitzel said. That search was not successful.

Although police called off the car chase for safety reasons, dispatchers tracked the location of the vehicle by pinging the victims’ stolen cellphones. Police tracked the phones to the 4300 block of West 47th Street, which is where Chicago police reported finding the victim, who had suffered head injuries and had lost several teeth.

ver the past five weeks you may have noticed that the Landmark gave substantial real estate to a series of stories involving a long-gone Riverside savings and loan. We chronicled it rapid descent into oblivion, after decades of careful, thrifty management, by gambling the business’ future on making risky loans to shady characters.

Some things never change, right?

It’s interesting to note that after the two top officers of the savings and loan were convicted in federal charges of bank fraud and a judge commuted nearly all of their prison sentences because they’d politely agreed to plead no contest and avoid a lengthy trial, the astonishing slap on the wrist didn’t go unnoticed.

An editorial in the Chicago Tribune titled “Justice, as imposed in two cases,” compared the $2 million in misappropriated funds by the savings and loan officers with the sentence given to a man who robbed a bus driver of $13.

The robber was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison and went to jail for at least four years before he could apply for parole.

In the Marshall Savings and Loan case, the federal prosecutor urged a harsh sentence to send a message to others in the banking industry who would be “watching to see what would happen if they steal this much money.”

Stealing $13 got one man years in prison. Stealing $2 million got a relative pass.

Readers were “invited to draw their own conclusions.”

The prosecutor was perceptive enough to understand and likely might have predicted that decades in the future, bankers engaged in all manner of behavior that had the effect of crashing the worldwide economy and ruining people’s lives would still not see the inside of a jail cell.

At any rate, thanks for indulging us for the past five week.

It’s a story – and if you haven’t read it, please check it out at www.RBLandmark.com, all five parts can now be found in one spot – that first surfaced in 2011 in the form of an envelope of photos that Berwyn resident Liz Faron bought at an estate sale in Cicero.

She shared them with the Landmark, along with a photocopy of a newspaper ad from 1963 announcing Marshall Savings’ “100 Million Dollar-versary.” That was it. But without those photos (and then several more Faron subsequently obtained online) the story of Marshall Savings might have disappeared altogether in the mists of time.

It was such an unsavory episode that within a decade of the S&L’s downfall, evidence of its existence had melted away. Principal actors moved away and the S&L itself literally was shrouded from its past in a pall of brown brick.

So, a huge thank you to Liz Faron for sharing the photos (and many other souvenirs from the S&L and the Sahara North) and to all of those – especially family members Hank Moravec III and Phil Mercurio – who responded graciously to messages from a distant reporter laden with odd and surely uncomfortable inquiries about their families.

And, of course, thanks to those who were there – the late Vic Damone and late Harry Volkman, Shecky Greene, Judy Zack and Art Bilek. We’re also grateful for the dogged reporting of the Chicago Tribune’s Robert Wiedrich, with whom we connected very briefly prior to his death.

Weathering the depths of winter

verybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it, because there is nothing you can do about it – and, right now, brrrrrrr!

Sitting here at the computer, I am thankful that I don’t have to go out and that we prepared the other day for the upcoming hit of winter in Chicago by going to the store and getting a few staples -- soup fixings, ingredients for a few meals and toilet paper (you know that is important!).

Listening to the weather report each morning, I watch the poor weather person standing in the cold, all bundled up, wondering what they did to get that plum assignment outdoors. I guess they are the rookies.

Thinking back to my childhood and my children’s childhood, I remember snow suits, those warm outfits where you kind of bagged the kid where they couldn’t move (think “A Christmas Story”).

We always purchased them at Li’l Deb-N-Heir, a children’s clothing/furnishings store the used to be on Cermak Road in Berwyn. I think the brand was Weather Winky and it had a snowman zipper pull.

Getting the old galoshes or boots on was a chore.

You’d put plastic bags over your shoes so the boots would go on easier, Gloves, where are they? You could

find one; the other probably was with the missing socks, which one day will probably unite and take over the world.

Someone finally invented clips for the gloves, which you’d fasten to the wrist part of the snowsuit, unless someone you knew knitted a piece of yarn with a mitten on each end, which strung through the sleeves of the jacket. I could probably use that now.

I’m content now to stay in and watch the birds at the feeders. There are so many cardinals in the yard we refer to it as the Vatican, though I don’t have the slightest inclination to make a snow angel (Husband Joe’s suggestion).

The heavy jacket, boots, gloves and scarves are handy just in case the spirit moves you to venture into the elements, but for now go ahead and put the kettle on for some tea (or maybe imbibe something else that is a good warmer for the system,) get comfortable with a “blankie” over your lap, read a book, watch TV, write some letters or just think that in a few months we will be complaining about how hot it is.

Remember, soon football, basketball and hockey seasons will be over and spring training is not far away.

Now that should warm you up!

Thanks to mystery snow shoveler I live on the 3500 block of McCormick Avenue in Brookfield, and since the heavy snow last week someone in our neighborhood is clearing the sidewalks on our block.

There are a lot of children who go to school at Hollywood, so it makes it easier for them to walk down the sidewalk. I don’t know who this person is, but I think they need to be publicly thanked for being a Good Samaritan or a “Good Neighbor Sam,” Jack Lemmon’s character from an early movie.

Marianne C. Aichinger (nee Campagna), 89, a longtime resident of North Riverside, died on Jan. 20, 2019.

She was a voracious reader and a frequent patron of the North Riverside Public Library, loved animals and was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks.

Ms. Aichinger was the wife of the late Charles J. Aichinger; the mother of Eric and Christopher Aichinger; the grandmother of Brandon; and the aunt of several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her 12 Campagna siblings.

Services and interment will be private at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.

Arrangements were handled by The Original Kuratko Family, Brian D. Kuratko, director.

Beverly L. Howard (nee Magnusson), 84, of Riverside, died Jan. 28, 2019.

Gary Dean Strasser, Sr., 72, passed away at his home in Deerbrook, Wisconsin, on the morning of Jan. 23, 2019.

Mr. Strasser was born in Antigo, Wisconsin, Feb. 15, 1946, to the late Leeland and Norma Strasser. He grew up on a farm north of Antigo and lived there with his parents, brother, and two sisters until he was 9 years old.

Then his father, Lee, got a job on the railroad as an engine conductor, which moved the family to Cicero. Mr. Strasser met his wife, Carol, in high school, while GARY DEAN he attended Morton STRASSER SR. West in Berwyn and she attended Morton East in Cicero. They married in 1967 and lived in Stickney and Brookfield before moving to Antigo.

Mr. Strasser grew to love hunting, fishing, and shooting as a young boy on the farm, which eventually led him to build a career out of a sport he was so passionate about. He first worked as a computer software analyst at Western Electric and then studied criminal justice at Northwestern University, which led to a career in law enforcement.

In 1969, he was hired as a patrolman in Stickney before moving on in 1973 to Riverside, where he was promoted to sergeant in 1979.

In 1980, Gary and Carol Strasser took his love for hunting to another level, starting Northwoods Adventures, a travel agency just for hunting and fishing.

The business took Mr. Strasser from Alaska to Mongolia and Africa, hunting with his son Gary Jr., and meeting some of his most treasured friends. He also helped hunting enthusiasts create many Safari International chapters throughout the world.

In 1995, Mr. Strasser retired from the police force and moved to Deerbrook, where he continued to manage Northwoods as president with Carol as the vice president.

He also served as director of the Northeast Zone Trap Club, and was one of the founding members who established the shooting range in Antigo. He attended the annual state shoot in Rome, Wisconsin, every year, and even won an award last year right after having heart valve replacement surgery.

Mr. Strasser is survived by his wife, Carol (nee Miller); his daughter, Susan (Rob) Ewing; his granddaughters, Kylie and Savannah Strasser and Ava; his brother-in-law, Ernie (Judy) Miller; his sisters Judy (Larry) Smykal, and Bari (George) Rezebek; his daughter-in-law Julie Strasser; nephews Jeff (Patty) Smykal, Tim (Susan) Smykal, Adam (Emily) Miller, and Steven Miller; his nieces Debbie Smykal, and Sandra (Nate) Lineman;

Medical secretary Elizabeth ‘’Betty’’ J. Frampton (nee Braza), 87, of Brookfield, died Jan. 23, 2019. Born May 19, 1931, Ms. Frampton was a retired medical secretary.

She was the wife of the late William J. Ann C. Maggos, 79 Ann C. Maggos, 79, of Houston, Texas, and formerly of Woodridge and Lyons, died Jan. 15, 2019.

For the better part of her life, Ms. Maggos proudly provided care and comfort to others as a registered nurse, early in her career in the trauma center at Cook County Hospital, and for many years working for veterans at Edward Hines VA Hospital. She also faced many personal mental health struggles in life, but her resiliency should serve as an inspiration to others.

Imelda R. Terrazino, 89 Appellate lawyer Imelda R. Terrazino (nee Bresingham), 89, of Riverside, died peacefully on Jan. 12, 2019.

After her children were in school, Ms. Terrazino graduated from Rosary College and John Marshall Law School. A talented appellate lawyer for three Illinois attorneys general and the firm of Clausen Miller Chicago, she wrote briefs and presented arguments before the Illinois and federal supreme courts during her career.

Her adventurous spirit took her traveling to 48 states, as well as North and Central America, Europe and Asia. She was also an avid reader, walker and curious student throughout her life.

Ms. Terrazino was known for her patience, ability to explain anything and listen to someone as if they were the only person in the room. Her children will especially miss her as their best friend.

She was the wife of the late Angelo S. he Riverside-Brookfield High School girls basketball team typically wins games with eight or nine players in the scorebook and a collective effort defensively. The Bulldogs’ balance, coupled with an aggressive style of play, has fit their up-tempo system very well.

Consequently, RBHS is 17-9 overall and in first place with a 9-1 record in the Metro Suburban Conference.

“The season has gone about as well as we could have hoped,” RBHS sophomore guard Brenna Loftus said. “We’ve had a lot of big wins that hopefully will carry us through to the end of the season. We started the season well and are working hard to end it the same way.”

Teammate Mary Maloney, a senior guard,

also offered her assessment of the season to date.

“The season has gone very well,” she said. “We’ve had a couple tough losses but we’ve also had a lot of very rewarding wins. I believe the team’s expectations for the rest of the season include getting to 20 wins, which is always a program goal, and finishing out the season with a conference championship.”

Loftus and junior Sarah Jnobaptiste have led RBHS (particularly on offense) this winter. The tandem played well in recent wins over Bishop McNamara and St. Francis.

“The way our team works is that everybody has a role,” RBHS assistant coach Mark Ruge said. “Their role is to score.”

In a 61-56 victory against Bishop Mac, Jnobaptiste recorded a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds and went 6-for-12 on 3-pointers, while Loftus finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Senior forward Leah Rettke also turned in a solid effort with 10 points and 11 boards. Sophomore guard Angelina Ocampo added five points and four rebounds.

“We’re lucky that Brenna is a sophomore and we still have Sarah for another year,” Ruge said. “Leah is an unsung hero and a gamer. Mary Maloney played a great game against Bishop Mac with five assists and no turnovers.”

A turning point this season for the Bulldogs actually occurred in their first meeting against Bishop Mac, a 69-64 victory over the Fightin’ Irish on Dec. 11 in Kankakee.

“That was a huge game when we played at Bishop Mac,” Ruge said. “Bishop Mac is a really good team that plays against some of the best teams around.

“We decided that game not to pass the ball 6-7 times but really attack the basket.

That’s where the best percentage shots are available. We talk about being aggressive

and not just settling for three-pointers. If an opponent gets back on defense, our secondary options are to look for our scorers Brenna and Sarah.”

Despite a relatively undersized roster, RBHS has more than held its own on the boards.

Forward Against St. Francis, Loftus scored a team-high 28 points to go with four rebounds and three steals as the Bulldogs cruised to a 70-45 win. Jnobaptiste contributed 18 points, four rebounds and two steals. Maloney chipped in eight points, five assists and four rebounds.

“My role on the team is being a distributor and a leader on the floor,” Maloney said.

“I really enjoy putting my teammates in positions to score and watching them go to work with the ball.”

Six other players accounted for the remaining points against the Spartans.

The Bulldogs scored 16 points apiece in two categories: second-chance points and points off turnovers.

Pressure defense and rebounding have created fast break opportunities all season for RBHS. “Our team is really strong when it comes to generating offense through our defense,” Loftus said. “We work hard on the defensive end and look to use that as a way to jumpstart our offense. We push the ball up the floor and make sure to move it well between everybody.”

Puppettes put on show at state

RBHS dance team making name for itself by working hard, having fun

The Riverside-Brookfield High School competitive/poms dance team has the distinction of being known as the Puppettes. While essentially every other RBHS team is called the Bulldogs, the Puppettes have carved their own niche in the school’s sports landscape.

During football and basketball games, the Puppettes provide halftime entertainment. However, when October rolls around, the team begins the competitive portion of its schedule by taking part in multiple competitions.

Over the past few years, a pattern of success has been established under third-year RBHS coach Madelyn Doyle.

“Last year’s 2018 IHSA state dance competition was the first time the RBHS poms team had gone to state since 2015,” RBHS senior Korinne Hopek said. “We had been the underdog team for most of that year, coming out of multiple competitions with top three trophies.

“This year we had another great season. Being the first school called [at the Geneva Sectional] as 2019 state qualifiers at awards was a quick rush of excitement and relief. All the nerves and practices were worth it and brought us to our goal. State was a great way to end the season on a high note.”

Ava Kaiser, an RBHS junior, added: “It was a thrill to perform at such a big arena among so many amazing teams at state. There was a huge audience and lots of spotlights on the performance floor. It was pretty nerve-wracking but also

a huge honor.”

Doyle purposefully stacked the schedule this season with tougher competitions against bigger schools. The Puppettes responded to the challenge like champs.

“Our music and choreography were very unique compared to other lyrical dances,” Kaiser said. “Our theme and costumes were well developed and helped us to stand out at competitions. We had such a great season. I really enjoyed dancing with all my friends and making some new ones as well.”

The RBHS dance team recorded a runner-up showing at the 21-team Andrew High School competition. The Puppettes also performed well in the postseason, scoring a statequalifying total of 82.63 at the Geneva Sectional. At the state finals hosted by Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, the RBHS dance team had a score of 79.19 to finish 21st in the preliminary round.

“We did better at the state competition this year compared to last year,” Doyle said. “I was very proud of the girls at the sectional. They really got into it with a fresh mind and energy. If they continue to progress like they have, the team will be in a good place moving forward.”

While being a part of the dance team can be fun, there’s plenty of hard work involved.

“The girls start dancing together during the summer before the school year,” Doyle said. “In the fall, they practice three times a week and then every day for two hours during the competitive dance season. We work on weight, tech-

“Our focus is to create a positive and supportive environment for each other. A goal for our team is to respect each other as dancers. Dance can be pretty competitive so it’s hard not compare yourself with other teams, but we try to focus on what’s important to us.”

The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys basketball team earned a pair of victories against visiting Chicago Christian 69-52 and host Marshall 72-66 in the MLK Dream Classic.

The Bulldogs’ Zach Vaia and Charles Terry scored 18 points apiece and Reggie Loury chipped in 17 points against Chicago Christian. Luke Gentile played well off the bench.

“We played really well in stretches,” RBHS coach Mike Reingruber said. “We started out strong and shot the ball extremely well.

Whenever you make 14 three-pointers at a very high percentage, you are generally going to have a successful night.”

In the latter game, Patrick Hanley (23 points, 7-for-16 on 3-pointers), Vaia (16 points, 6 assists), Andrew Veon (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Terry (12 points) all scored in double figures against Marshall.

“I was really pleased with how we played in the second half and down the stretch against Marshall,” Reingruber said. “Pat-

rick Hanley was outstanding and hit some really big shots.”

RBHS (17-4) hits the road this weekend with games at Immaculate Conception (Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m.) and at Fenwick (Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.).

The Friars finished with a score of 104, followed by Brother Rice (58) and St. Ignatius (39). The Friars, who went 10-0 in conference dual meets this season, host the Metro Catholic Athletic Conference Championships, on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m.

Senior guard Solomon Oraegbu scored 28 points and pulled down five rebounds to power Fenwick past Hersey 71-62. Standout sophomore forward Bryce Hopkins contributed a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

The Friars (11-10, 4-5 Chicago Catholic League) host a pair of games this weekend against Brother Rice (Feb. 1) and RBHS (Feb. 2). Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
