During the bitter cold snap last week, RiversideBrookfield High School was shut down for two days -- but that didn’t mean that school was called off.

For the first time RBHS implemented “eLearning days,” where students were expected to do classroom assignments at home on their school-issued Chromebooks.

This means that RBHS students won’t have to make up the two days lost to the cold last week as their counterparts at Lyons Township High School and local elementary and middle schools will have to do.

The eLearning days at RBHS were possible because this is the first year that every RBHS student has a Chromebook under a one-to-one program begun four years ago and phased in one graduating class at a time.

Brookfield group looks to help local charities

WHAM provides monthly service project opportunities

The holiday season is typically when most community businesses, schools and organizations sponsor fundraisers and other charitable events.

But about people who want to work with neighbors during the rest of the year to do good for others in their own backyard?

A new Brookfield-based service organization named We Have A Mission, or WHAM, was created for those looking to work on monthly service projects with friends and neighbors or with the whole family.

WHAM was founded late last year by the Rev. Karl Sokol and his wife, Ann, of Brookfield’s Compassion United Methodist Church; Terri Rivera, a lifelong Brookfield resident; and Riverside resident Lisa Peters as a way to regularly assist community charities.

All three eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes of the 7400 and 7500 blocks of Cermak Road were shut down for three hours on the afternoon of Feb. 3 after a semi-tractor trailer knocked down a power pole while trying to turn into the parking lot of the former Toys R Us at 7451 Cermak Road in North Riverside.

The truck driver, a 33-year-old Berwyn man, told police he was eastbound on Cermak Road at 2:20 p.m. when he turned right into the driveway between Toys R Us and Kohl’s.

When the driver then attempted a tight right turn into the Toys R Us lot, the truck went over the curb and struck a wood ComEd pole, knocking it over and pulling down the highpower lines across the roadway.to the north.

A witness called 911 when she saw the power lines sparking. No one was injured and police did not ticket the driver since the accident occurred on private property, according to Police Chief Deborah Garcia.

The accident caused power outages east of North Riverside Park Mall, including at the North Riverside Plaza shopping center and across Cermak Road at Binny’s Beverage Depot, where shoppers were stocking up for parties three hours before the Super Bowl.

A North Riverside woman called police at about 9:05 a.m. on Jan. 29 to report a road rage incident that started at 26th Street and Harlem Avenue and ended near Pine and West avenues when she lost the Chevy that had been following her.

The woman said it started when she honked her horn at someone failing to turn on a green arrow. While westbound on 26th Street the driver of the Chevy reportedly threw a plastic bottle at her car and then threw another one while southbound on Desplaines Avenue.

Near Pine and West, two men got out of the Chevy and the woman drove away. At that time, the woman’s son reportedly saw one of the men open the trunk of the Chevy and pull out a handgun. The woman was able to drive away without incident.

Passenger calls in DUI Riverside police charged a 31-year-old Justice man with drunken driving after a 39-yearold man who was a passenger in the car dialed 911 because “he was scared for his life.”

The passenger called police at about 3:10 a.m. on Feb. 3, saying the driver was intoxicated, driving recklessly while southbound on Harlem Avenue and refused to stop when he asked him to. The passenger told police the driver ran several red lights and was speeding down Harlem Avenue before reaching Riverside.

Police located the 2008 Mazda in the 3700 block of Harlem Avenue and pulled the vehi-

cle over in the parking lot of XSport Fitness in the 3900 block.

In addition to driving under the influence of alcohol, the man was cited for numerous traffic violations.

Transmission heist An owner of JV Automotive, 9100 Plainfield Road, Brookfield, called police on Feb. 2 at about 9:30 a.m. to report the theft of a 2018 Toyota Prius transmission core valued at about $1,000.

According to the police report, the transmission core was left outside of the shop next to the overhead garage door under a plastic cover, on a dolly. Police saw tire tracks from a vehicle that appears to have backed up to where the core had been stored. The plastic cover and dolly were left at the site.

Burst pipe In addition to regular police calls, at least one Brookfield officer lent some emergency help to a76-year-old homeowner who called to report that a pipe in her house had burst in the below-zero cold at about 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 31.

The officer responding to a home in the 3100 block of Oak Avenue saw that a water line to the kitchen sink was broken. He shut the valve under the sink, but the hot water line kept flowing, so he called the fire department to come and shut off the home’s main valve.

The officer then helped the resident find a 24-hour plumber who could come and repair the broken pipe.

Handcuff problems A 61-year-old Brookfield man drove his 18-year-old grandson to the Brookfield Police Department on Feb. 1 at about 10:55 p.m. after the grandson locked a handcuff to his left forearm and couldn’t get it off because he didn’t have the key.

The grandfather told police he was sleeping at the time. His grandson woke him up to inform him that he’d locked the handcuff onto his arms and couldn’t find the key. They ended up going to police since the handcuff was beginning to cause the teenager some discomfort. Police were able to remove the cuff without further incident.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Jan. 28-Feb. 3 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

These cases have not been adjudicated.

Brookfield awards demolition contract for bowling alley Building must come down by March 29

The village of Brookfield has put a deadline on taking down the long-vacant Brookfield Bowl, 3415 Maple Ave., now that it has hired a firm to demolish the building.

On Jan. 28, trustees voted unanimously to award a contract to demolish the building and remove asbestos from the site to Markham-based KLF Enterprises and set March 29 as the date by which the project must be substantially completed.

Once work starts, it should take about a week to take the building down, said Nicholas Greifer, the village’s director of community and economic development.

“We look forward to seeing a hazardous building be removed,” Greifer said.

KLF Enterprises submitted the lowest of eight bids received by the village, at $39,500.

The winning bid was more than $20,000 lower than the second-lowest bidder, and the remaining six demolition firms submitted bids of $75,000 or more. The village’s engineer had estimated the job would cost $100,000.

“We were all surprised, because it was well

below the engineer’s estimate of $100,000 and well below what the appraisal four years ago had it pegged at,” Greifer said.

The bid was so far below previous estimates that some trustees wanted to make sure the bid didn’t contain room for additional charges later.

Greifer said that all of the bidders had addressed the specifications the village had set for the project. An independent engineering firm reviewed the bids and concluded they all were responsive.

Theodore G. Sianis, a project engineer for Clark Dietz Inc., stated his firm was familiar with KLF Enterprises and recommended that the village accept their bid for the work.

The demolition project will be paid for with money taken from the Eight Corners Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Fund.

Village officials since last summer have been working with a Hinsdale-based development firm on an agreement that would convey the bowling alley property to them in order for them to build a three- to fourstory multifamily residential building.

Tartan Builders, which was the sole respondent to a request for qualifications to develop the property last year, likely would

still need to complete additional environmental testing of the site, which sits immediately north of a gas station.

Exactly how that environmental analysis would be funded – either by the developer, through the TIF fund or a combination – is not known at this time.

Village officials moved to tear the building down late last year after a fire damaged the interior of the bowling alley. Police say the fire was set intentionally, and greater damage was avoided only because someone happened to be walking past the bowling alley at 4 a.m. on Sept. 22, saw an orange glow through the front doors and dialed 911.

No one has been arrested for the alleged arson, but the incident marked the second time last year where people had broken into the building.

The former bowling alley has been vacant since 2011, when the village ordered it shut down after the building’s owner failed to make repairs to trusses holding up the roof.

The village of Brookfield acquired the bowling alley property in 2014 through Cook County’s no-cash bid program for taxdelinquent properties.

Brookfield extends special use moratorium at 8 Corners Trustees want further analysis by village’s legal counsel

Wanting more time for the village’s law firm to analyze the language of an ordinance that would restrict public assembly at properties in the Eight Corners business district, Brookfield village trustees voted unanimously on Feb. 28 to extend a moratorium on any special use or rezoning applications for that district by three months.

“The additional recommendations [by the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission], while they were very thoughtful, I just want to make sure that they were properly reviewed,” said Trustee Michael Garvey. “I hope this is enough time for the attorneys to give us the advice about how their recommendation could affect what happens going forward.”

Trustees initially approved the moratorium in April 2018 after voting to allow the Rev. Karl Sokol a special use permit for Sunday religious assembly at his Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210

In voting to allow religious assembly, some trustees indicated they were concerned that denying the use would trigger a lawsuit.

At the time, Garvey said his vote to allow religious assembly at Compassion Factory was informed by advice from the village’s legal counsel and his reading of federal law.

Immediately upon allowing religious assembly, trustees imposed a six-month moratorium on granting any other special uses so that the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission could look at and make recommendations to change what uses ought to be allowed at Eight Corners.

Some Brookfield residents, with precedent for religious assembly now set at Eight Corners, feared a church might be allowed to be built in the district on land owned by Sokol’s mother, Linda Sokol Francis.

Initial plans for a community center/ church were shot down by the Brookfield Village Board in 2010. Earlier this year, Rev. Karl Sokol revealed a new concept for the property that would include a mixeduse commercial/residential building and a separate fine arts center with a theater that would double as a church.

Sokol privately unveiled a version of that concept to Brookfield planning staff in October 2017 but has never submitted formal plans to the village. submitting formal plans “within the next month.”

Asked why it might take three months for the village’s lawyers to review the proposed ordinance limiting public assembly at Eight Corners, Village President Kit Ketchmark said he hoped the matter could be wrapped up prior to that time.

At a minimum, though, the village board wouldn’t vote on the ordinance for at least a month. If it’s decided to once again remand the matter to the Planning and Zoning Commission, that could extend the time line by at least two weeks.

Ketchmark said the upcoming trustee election at the beginning of April did not play into the decision to extend the moratorium.

“I was hoping to have dealt with it at the [Jan. 28] meeting,” Ketchmark said.

31 flights for father, family, friends

North Riverside firefighter Richard Gray has raised about $35,000 for the American Lung Association

On Feb. 9, firefighter Richard Gray will climb the 31 flights of stairs at the Oakbrook Terrace Tower, dressed in the full, 60-pound gear required as a member of the North Riverside Fire Department.

Gray aims to raise at least $3,000 this year in his annual climb for the American Lung Association, bringing the total he’s raised for the group to nearly $40,000 over the last approximately eight years.

Last year, he received the coveted Impact Award for his dedication to the group; this year, Gray is raising funds at bit.ly/2MdOFdf. Gray has climbed every year since 2010, trekking up flights in Oakbrook Terrace and Chicago, initially inspired after he saw a poster advertising the challenge in the firehouse.

His thoughts turned to his father, Richard, who received a right lung transplant in 2010, after years of smoking, ammonia inhalation and inhaling “a lot” of smoke fighting Forest Park fires, Gray said.

Richard Gray Sr. served as a lieutenant of the Forest Park Fire Department for about two decades.

“There used to be a meat packing plant on Brown Avenue that caught on fire a couple of

times and set off an ammonia leak. He took a little too much in and went into the hospital a few times,” Gray said. “Just to even get on the donors list was incredible.”

Gray Sr. realized he needed a lung transplant in early 2010, after seemingly endless tests and got approval from a group of pulmonologists to be placed on a donor list.

Gray said doctors thought they found a match in June 2010. His father arrived at Loyola University Medical Center, where he spent two hours being prepped for the surgery. But bad storms delayed the lung’s arrival to the hospital and, by the time the organ arrived, doctors realized it wasn’t a perfect match.

Two months later, at about 2 a.m., Richard Sr. received another call from doctors. He rushed to the Loyola’s ICU, got prepped for the surgery and received a transplant.

Eight years later, Richard has suffered a few “minor setbacks” but is doing well, Gray said.

While at the hospital, the Grays made friends with the Patels, another family waiting for their father to receive a left lung transplant.

After each underwent successful surgery, the families kept in touch, occasionally each other emailing updates and jokingly referring to the patriarchs as “Righty” and “Lefty.” One year, Gray dedicated his climb to “Lefty.”

“Each year, I’ll dedicate my climb to somebody, whether it’s a family member who’s passed from lung disease, somebody who’s currently afflicted by it, or a friend of the family, like Lefty,” he said.

This year, he will recognize “the love of my life,” his wife Renee, whose mother, aunt and cousin have all died of lung cancer. Thanks to a low dosage CT screening, doctors caught three “very, very small” benign nodules on Renee’s lung this summer.

“Obviously she was very upset, so I’m basically doing this for her this year,” he said.

Doctors will now monitor the nodules.

“It really hits home, which is why I started doing these climbs for my dad,” Gray said. “I want to help others.”

Gray said he starts training for the climb in September, by trekking up the stairs of the firehouse’s hose tower in his gym clothes and riding a stationary bike. By December, he starts training in his 60-pound air pack, and climbing up the firehouse’s staircase 16 times about three times a week, double the amount required to climb the 31 flights at Oakbrook Terrace Tower.

“You learn little tricks as you go along each time you do it,” Gray said.

He tries to pace himself, resisting the temptation to sprint the first 10 flights of stairs.

“Take it slow; it’s a marathon, not a sprint,” Gray said. “Unless you’re in the best shape of your life, climbing 31 flights of stairs in five minutes is a lot harder than it looks.”

New streetlights on the way for Broadway Avenue Existing poles are decades old, with failing bracket arms

When Broadway Avenue undergoes its resurfacing/reconstruction project this summer, the center median along two-block business strip is also in line to get new decorative street lights, replacing the existing concrete poles that may very well date back to the late 1950s.

Village Engineer Derek Treichel got the go-ahead from trustees on Jan. 28 to include streetlight installation as an alternate package in the bid specifications for the road improvement project. The village is slated to seek formal bids for the work in late February.

When Treichel first raised the subject of replacing the streetlights mid-January, trustees were lukewarm on the idea due to the cost.

Replacing the 18 concrete poles that line the median with decorative black streetlights will come at a cost of $380,600.

In addition to the poles, which would have mast arms that would illuminate both the north and south sides of Broadway Avenue, the work would include new wiring, both inside each poles and inside conduit that would run from pole to pole in the median.

What convinced trustees that replacing the poles made sense was both the condition of the existing poles and the cost to repair them.

Treichel told trustees that 10 of the 18 poles had cracked bracket plates, which hold the mast arms to the pole. Some of those bracket plates were reinforced about five years ago when the village installed new LED lights to the bracket arms. Those repairs were meant to be temporary, Treichel said.

One of the poles has no bracket arms (and, as a result, no lights) at all because it wasn’t possible to make repairs to the bracket plates.

According to Treichel, the bracket plates are in good condition on seven of the poles.

Treichel said the village could opt to replace

the bracket arms and lights on the existing poles. That work would also include new wiring inside each pole, but would leave in place the existing wiring under the median, which is not inside a conduit and is not up to code.

The cost for that option was estimated at $133,000, Treichel said.

It’s not clear exactly how old the existing concrete poles are, but Treichel estimated that they were at least 49 years old. Village President Kit Ketchmark said that when work on Broadway Avenue was being done in the mid1980s, there was talk then about replacing the poles.

The poles may, in fact, date back to 1958 when the area underwent a large scale improvement project, which included the installation of what’s now known as the Veterans Memorial Circle. Prior to 1958, there was no circle, and the 16-way intersection was a nightmare for vehicles to traverse.

The book “Brookfield, Illinois: A History” published in 1993 in conjunction with the village’s centennial celebration, states that on Dec. 16, 1958 the village held a celebration to

christen the new circle.

During the ceremony, “Mary Ann Mobley, Miss America of 1958, turned the switch to illuminate the new mercury vapor lights installed in the Broadway-Circle district.”

In addition to new streetlights, trustees also OK’d seeking bids to install three high-visibility, brick paver mid-block crosswalks across Broadway Avenue. There are three such crosswalks presently, delineated by white thermoplastic markings – two east of the circle and one west of it. Treichel estimated that the crosswalks would cost $50,000.

The village would pay for the streetlight improvements by splitting the cost between the Eight Corners Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District, which can use those funds for infrastructure improvements, and using money from bond proceeds that are funding residential street improvements throughout the village.

Broadway Avenue is part of the village’s 2019 street improvement program. Other streets in this year’s program are located north of 31st Street.

Possible 3rd District rematch could be bitter one Marie Newman exploring another run for Congress against Lipinski

After giving Dan Lipinski (D-3rd) the toughest battle of his political life last year, Marie Newman seems to be gearing up for another run at the veteran congressman in 2020.

Last March, Lipinski defeated Newman by just over 2,000 votes in a bitterly contested Democratic primary in the 3rd Congressional District, which runs from the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago to near Joliet and includes the southern half of Brookfield.

The two candidates are opposites politically and in their personal style, and time has not healed the primary wounds.

Since her primary loss, Newman has volunteered on other Democratic campaigns and resumed working as freelance consultant and marketing advisor.

Now she is traveling around the district meeting people as she decides whether to challenge Lipinski again. On Jan. 23 she spoke to a meeting of the Indivisible West Suburban Action League held at the Riverside Public Library.

“I am doing a formal and methodical exploratory, just like we did last time,” Newman said. “I have about 10 meet-and-greets under my belt right now, we’d like to get 40 or 50 done before say the middle of April and make a decision sometime after that I would say.”

Newman had support from some national progressive and abortion rights groups, and a fired-up band of local supporters, in her challenge of Lipinski, who is anti-abortion and is considered one of the most conservative Democratic members of Congress.

The bitterness of the primary race was apparent on Election Night when Newman refused to concede, telling her supporters that she wanted Lipinski to have “a painful night.”

She conceded the next morning with a message on her campaign Facebook page.

“I’m kind of surprised that she would run again after the embarrassing speech, very hateful speech, that she made on Election Night,” Lipinski told the Landmark. “I think a lot of people really saw her for who she is.”

In an interview with the Landmark Newman apologized for that statement and provided more context for the remark.

“It was a very, very, very tough race and you saw my humanity that night,” Newman said.

“I feel badly that the audience heard that, and I apologize to the district and the audience.”

Newman was angry saying that Lipinski and his supporters spread lies about her.

Perhaps most hurtful to Newman, whose husband is Jewish, was a text message sent by a Lipinski supporter to a Newman supporter saying that Newman was a Holocaust denier.

The text message, first reported last March by the Oak Lawn Patch, came in an exchange between someone working with the Washington, D.C.-based group No Labels, which supported Lipinski and ran a texting campaign for him.

Lipinski’s general election opponent was neo-Nazi Art Jones, who does deny the Holocaust.

A spokesman for No Labels said the volunteer apparently just confused Newman with Jones.

“Any suggestion that No Labels was push-

ing this slur about Newman is completely false,” said Ryan Clancy of No Labels.

Lipinski echoed that view.

“There was no reason for anyone to come out and claim that Marie Newman was a Holocaust denier. That’s just wrong,” Lipinski said. “It was a text message. It should have never been sent by that person. I think they got Marie Newman mixed up, probably, with Art Jones who was running as a Republican.”

However, Newman doesn’t buy that explanation saying that other such messages were sent by Lipinski supporters. She said Lipinski and those supporting him falsely attacked her in a number of ways.

“We know he called me anti-Catholic, anti-nun, jailer of nuns,” Newman said.

“There were four or five that were provably wrong. And when he was told to stop doing it, he went on doing it.”

The jailing nuns charge was apparently was a reference to Newman’s support for a part of the Affordable Care Act that would require employers to pay for insurance coverage for birth control for their employees.

Lipinski was one of 34 Congressional Democrats who voted against the Affordable Care Act in 2010, although he now says that he supports the law.

Lipinski said that nothing bitter came from his mouth during the campaign and noted that he faced tough attacks from Newman and her supporters.

“If I took personal offense at every nasty, really horrible things that’s said about me on social media, I couldn’t ever do the job because all I would be is continuously fired up and upset,” Lipinski said.

Newman faulted Lipinski for never taking action to stop what she said were false attacks on her.

“He did not stop his supporters,” Newman said.

Lipinski named chair of House Transportation subcommittee With the Democrats regaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives this year for the first time since 2010, Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-3rd) has been named the chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

In his role as subcommittee chairman, Lipinski hopes to use his newfound power and influence to steer some additional dollars to Metra so it can upgrade locomotives and passenger cars on its problem-plagued Burlington Northern-Santa Fe line.

“I’m hopeful that we will do an infrastructure bill, hopefully this spring,” Lipinski said. “We certainly need money for a lot of transportation infrastructure, and public transit especially is in need of funding. Metra has significant issues with how old their locomotives are. And their rail cars, if they could get new ones, then that could certainly help with service.”

There are a host of issues that Lipinski said that he wants to work on.

“I especially look forward to conducting oversight on matters my constituents and others are concerned about, including commuter rail on-time performance, noise pollution, railroad property upkeep in our communities, and reducing blocked crossings, among other issues,” Lipinski said.

Witness says drug firm sales exec wooed Riverside doc with lap dance Riverside got an oblique mention on Jan. 30 during the federal trial in Boston of four executives of a pharmaceutical company accused of bribing physicians to prescribe a powerful opioid spray originally meant for terminal cancer patients.

In her testimony, Holly Brown, a former sales rep from Insys Therapeutics, the maker of the fentanyl spray Subsys, said one of the company’s regional sales managers performed a “lap dance” on Dr. Paul C. Madison at a Chicago nightclub as part of her attempt to pressure Madison into prescribing the drug.

For about four years starting in 2013, Madison operated his practice at Riverside Pain Management at 28 E. Burlington St.

in Riverside. His medical license in Illinois was suspended in late 2016 for improperly prescribing controlled substances.

Last November, Madison was convicted of 11 counts of medical insurance fraud in a case unrelated to the Riverside practice.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and will be sentenced in March.

Despite Madison’s reputation, Insys Therapeutics reportedly sought him out, along with physicians, to push their fentanyl spray, Subsys. In exchange for prescribing the drug, Insys paid Madison tens of thousands of dollars to compensate him for hosting dinners to convince other doctors to do the same.

Federal prosecutors called the dinners

“sham” speaking engagements and described the arrangement between Insys and its doctor-speakers as “a nationwide conspiracy to profit by using bribes and fraud to cause the illegal distribution” of Subsys.

At trial on Jan. 30, according to the AP, Brown said Madison had trouble attracting other doctors to his dinners because of his reputation and that they mostly were attended by Madison’s friends.

An Associated Press reporter covering the trial of Insys Therapeutics founder John Kapoor and four other top executives reported that the company had hired a woman named Sunrise Lee, “a former exotic dancer” with “no experience in the pharmaceutical world” to be a regional

sales manager.

After one of Madison’s “speaking engagements” at a Chicago restaurant, Brown, the former salesperson, went to a nightclub called Underground with Lee, Madison and another Insys employee.

While at the club, according to the AP’s account of Brown’s testimony, “she saw Lee sitting on Madison’s lap and ‘bouncing around,’ with Madison’s hands ‘inappropriately all over’ Lee’s chest.”

The attention must have worked, because Madison was the state of Illinois’ top prescriber of the fentanyl spray, personally accounting for 60 percent of all Subsys prescriptions in the state.

When the Eastmans first put the residence on the market in 2010, the list price was $2.9 million. It had been on and off the market ever since, with the listing price reducing over time. The house had most recently been listed at just below $1.3 million.

The eLearning days were also possible because a change in the state’s school code, which no longer requires students to be in school for five hours to have the day count as “official.” Public schools in Illinois are required to hold 176 school days during the academic year.

“When Illinois changed their requirement, we thought that eLearning would be a great option for us, because it allows us to continue on with the curriculum and not have to worry about falling behind,” Smetana said.

Last fall, RBHS administrators discussed having eLearning days on days when school would be closed due to bad weather. With last week’s bitter cold being forecast well in advance, Smetana said that it was the per-

The four-year restoration project earned the Eastmans a 2004 Wright Spirit Award from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.

“He was dogged,” John Waters, preservation programs manager for the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, told the Landmark following Dean Eastman’s death in March 2018. “He always wants to do things the best, most appropriate way.”

Ella Mae Eastman said selling the property after she and her husband put so much time, money and effort into its restoration was bittersweet. She leaves with very fond memories of people they met through the home and of the work they accomplished.

Eastman said the new owners, who are relocating to the Chicago area from another place, first viewed the house last September and made the decision to buy on a return trip in December.

At some point in the future, Eastman said, she’ll be looking to sell the coach house to move to the city.

“I’m not sure when that will be, but I won’t be here forever,” Eastman said.

In the music portion of the Fine Arts Survey class, students followed along with a video about how to play ukulele and then wrote about what they did well at and what they struggled with.

For a Wellness class students recorded themselves doing a series of pushups.

Still it wasn’t the same as a day in school.

“I thought it’s useful,” Keen said. “It’s a good idea when you obviously can’t go to school, but I didn’t think it’s a great substitute.”

Delaying action

T

he Brookfield Village Board again has put off making a decision on potentially changing just what kinds of “assembly” will be allowed in the Eight Corners business district.

On Jan. 28, trustees voted to prolong a moratorium on applications seeking special uses or zoning changes in the Eight Corners district. If the latest extension goes the full length without action from the village board, that’ll make it a year-long ban – it went into effect last April.

Let’s be frank here: there’s exactly one kind of assembly the village is trying to avoid. Having granted a special use for religious assembly a year ago to Compassion United Methodist Church at 9210 Broadway Ave., the village doesn’t want to compound that decision by having to grant more properties that use.

After all, there are several properties at Eight Corners controlled either by the church or people connected to it, and one of the principal property owners has long dreamed of establishing a new Methodist church there.

When the Brookfield Village Board voted to allow religious assembly at 9210 Broadway Ave., trustees did so, in part, on the advice of their attorney. Clearly the village’s legal counsel saw the potential for a First Amendment lawsuit, and the Rev. Karl Sokol, the pastor of Compassion United Methodist Church, has himself used the term “First Amendment” when speaking of the village’s attempts to block religious assembly in a zoning district that presently allows it as a special use.

Should the village board vote to remove all types of assembly at Eight Corners, we don’t see the village escaping First Amendment issues and believe it will be inviting a lawsuit.

At issue here is planning for the future of Eight Corners, and we believe there’s room for negotiation.

We would venture to say that the majority of Brookfield residents and, surely, village government itself want Eight Corners to become a lively commercial/residential district and not some sort of religious mission.

That does not necessarily mean that the two cannot coexist, and even benefit one another.

For those who are dead set against Sokol being allowed to build any kind of “church” – even if it’s a theater space within a fine arts complex that converts itself to religious use once a week – we’d ask this. What is your solution?

An important factor is the simple fact that the church and/or the church’s benefactor, Linda Sokol Francis, owns all of that property. Anyone could have purchased the land. She did.

That may not make people happy, but it’s reality. It also gives her and the church leverage in decisions regarding the future of those properties. The village also has leverage in the form of granting approvals for things like development applications.

But this is going to be something of a dance, and not everyone is going to get everything they want. The best way forward, in our view, is for good faith negotiations on future development that benefit both the village and the property owner.

Lining up at the feeders of the ‘Vatican’

S

pent a lot of time this past week keeping warm doing things that need to be done in the house and watching the birds in the backyard, specifically cardinals.

I have often remarked we attract so many cardinals to our backyard haven that we refer to it as the Vatican. Noticeably more attractive (and, ladies, let’s not take offense to this), the male of the species is more colorful and easier to spot. Of course, I will assume in defense that the females are smarter. Oops, I don’t want to start any controversy.

So, taking a break from watching yet another rerun of “Law and Order,” because we know they are always on some channel to look out the windows of the back room, we spotted seven bright red cardinals, enjoying the seeds from the full feeders or sitting comfortably sheltered in the evergreen trees.

With the Christmas season past, I started reflecting on how the cardinal has come to be a symbol of the season, used on greeting cards, ornaments and various decorations. They have come to be known as the Christmas bird.

Legend has it that its bright color symbolizes the beauty and warm feeling of the season, along with holiday cheer.

They bring cheer, hope and inspiration on the gloomy days

as we look to spring.

It is also thought to be nature’s way to remind us of our faith, with the scarlet plumage representing the blood of Christ shed for the redemption of mankind. That last part is a bit heavy for me, but that’s what I found doing research.

The birds should be thankful to Husband Joe, who braves the elements to keep the feeders (yes, feeders, plural) filled. All bundled up, it was funny to watch him trudge through the backyard only to come in to proclaim how cold it was outside. I knew that and I was inside.

Also benefiting from the effort were the squirrels, who can’t remember where they buried food all spring and summer and just hang around the feeders hoping for anything to drop on the ground.

Kudos to all the public works departments, who were out there last week doing great jobs. Special thanks to Riverside.

They were out early cleaning the streets and sidewalks in front of Riverside Orthopedics on Burlington, making it easy for patients to get into the building. Saw Mike Collins doing his job with a smile on his face, along with his bundled-up crew.

Anne N. Jackson, 78 Retired from Cook County Hospital Anne Nathan Jackson (nee Johns), 78, died Jan. 28, 2019. She was born Feb. 8, 1940 in the small town of Brundidge, Alabama to the late Oscar & Victoria Johns. Anne had three brothers, Jeff, Budd and Joseph and two sisters, Inez and Mary, who all preceded her in death.

Ms. Jackson attended and graduated from D.A. Smith High School in Alabama in 1959. In 1960,

In the early 1970s, she met and married James E. Jackson, who preceded her in death, and from this union Kimberly L. Jackson (Mitchell) was born.

I

Church critic ‘has an opinion but no plan’

read in the Landmark (“8 Corners church proposal ‘not right or fair,’” One View, Jan. 23) that “churches are supposed to bring the community together, yet the debate over Rev. Sokol’s plans for Eight Corners has undoubtedly been divisive for Brookfield.”

Linda Sokol Francis has been a successful, small business owner in Brookfield for several decades. The office building she built on Grand Boulevard is the most attractive structure in the Eight Corners business district. Linda’s building was designed with two office units on the ground floor, two apartments above, advanced for its day, now the “approvable, desirable configuration” for this area.

Linda did not make “a big money land grab” for the parcels at issue. As single lots and buildings came up for sale, she was the only one to make an offer. Yes, she tore down the centuryold buildings. Yes, she left the parking lot.

Forty years ago, there were two Methodist churches of the traditional style in Brookfield.

Twenty years ago, the two congregations merged and the south side building was sold.

Ten years ago, the consolidated, north side church was again failing and unable to sustain its ancient, traditional building.

At that point, 10 years ago, Linda made a proposal to give the property across from her office to the Methodist Church. It would build a new, multi-use building with 21st century appeal.

At the Grand/Washington junction would be a standalone commercial structure, tentatively an ice cream parlor, northwest of which would be a community center/main auditorium suitable for Sunday services and other meetings with space to spare for ample parking.

Her theory was that, while the old congregation was aging and shrinking, a new building would attract new members who would take pride in being what the Navy calls, “plank holders.” Would this work? I do not know, however, she owned the land and the United Methodist Church would pay for the building.

Tiny groups of nay-sayers had objections. Village management had concerns about sewage and storm water management. They also saw this as a location for potential development rather than a tax-exempt church property; however, no developer was interested.

This notion was strongly shared by at least one board member who loudly objected and prevailed in the vote not to approve necessary zoning variances, hoping for future development.

Roughly speaking this coincided with the arrival of Rev. Karl Sokol, who was trying to hold the Methodist congregation together and attempting to grow it without a formal place to hold services.

The dry cleaners on Broadway closed and the building was offered for sale. Once again no one wanted it. The Methodist church bought it, cleaned up the contaminated property, rebuilt the building and opened an art gallery with the caveat that the Methodist congregation could pray there for an hour each Sunday.

Your contributor says, “Rev. Sokol’s latest plans will undoubted cost . . . millions of dollars in lost revenue.” Or, as Linda said 10 years ago, “The property taxes on the vacant land in question are $1,850 per year; I’ll promise to write Cook County a property tax check for that amount each year.”

In the parlance of today, your contributor is a “stakeholder” which is a misnomer because a “stakeholder” is someone in the vicinity who has no real stake. He has an opinion but no plan. He has no investment in the property and no interest in making one, yet he demands a say in what someone else, who has a plan and has put up the money, wants to do.

Senate committee discusses path to $15 minimum wage

SPRINGFIELD – Divisions between business and labor interests were on display Jan. 30 at the Illinois Senate Labor Committee’s hearing on raising the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $15 per hour over an undefined period of years.

Exact details of a proposal have not been released, but Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood), whose 4th District includes all of North Riverside and all of Brookfield north of 31st Street, said she plans to introduce bill language as early as this week to advance Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s first major legislative agenda item.

Since 2010, Lightford said, she has filed four bills to raise the minimum wage, the most recent of which was vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner last year. If any of those bills had passed, the minimum wage would be more than $10 per hour right now, she said.

Lawmakers, lobbyists and activists agreed to discuss the following issues as negotiations progress.

Lightford said rate increases would be phased in, and the $15 rate would not take effect until at least 2025, although an exact timeframe for the increase is not yet defined.

Business representatives at the committee preferred a longer-term rollout. Lobbyist Mike Noonan, representing the Illinois Restaurant Association, said his industry would be OK with a seven-year rollout – $1 each year for the first six, then 75 cents the final year.

Worker rights advocates, such as Greg Kelly of the Service Employees International Union, preferred a more timely increase.

He said 41 percent of all workers in Illinois make less than $15 per hour, and more of those workers are in their 40s, 50s and 60s than are younger than 25.

“Folks who make less than $15 per hour cover the gamut of workers in this state, and raising their wage would have a tremendous impact on millions of workers in Illinois.”

While Kelly and the SEIU advocated for the need for health care workers to be paid more, Pat Comstock, executive director of the Healthcare Council of Illinois, a health care facility advocacy group, said the state’s Medicaid reimbursement rate makes doing so difficult.

She said Illinois reimburses Medicaidfunded nursing homes at a rate of $55,000 per person annually, while it costs closer to $70,000 to care for a patient. That number makes Illinois 49th in nursing home reimbursement rates. Several homes have closed recently because of this, she said.

“Right now, the crisis that we have been talking to you about is happening,” Comstock said. “We want to pay whatever the state of Illinois decides that we should be paying our workers. But there’s no more room in our system to do this without help from the state of Illinois in our Medicaid wages.”

Comstock said the Healthcare Council would introduce a bill or work with Lightford to increase the reimbursement rate along with minimum wage increases.

Tipped workers Shirley Holden, a Chicagoan who works in the service industry, testified to the “instability” and “constant stress and anxiety” she has felt in her 20 years as a worker whose pay is based on tips.

State law requires employers to pay 60 percent of the $8.25 minimum wage, with the other 40 percent made up of tip money. That equals a minimum wage of $4.95 paid by employers, an obligation that would increase if the other 40 percent of the $8.25 is not met by tip income.

Holden said despite the tip minimum wage, wage theft is a problem in the service industry.

Lightford added that strengthening labor laws for tipped workers would be on the agenda as discussions progress as well.

Hopkins scored 13 of his game-high 25 points over the final eight minutes as the Friars made it a one-possession game on a few occasions.

But each time Fenwick drew close, RBHS answered with clutch baskets whether it was Vaia (who scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter), Hanley or Loury.

“We made a couple of adjustments defensively. Offensively, we started making shots,” Reingruber said. “It helps when you start seeing the ball go through the hoop.

After Fenwick cut the RBHS lead to 62-59 on a Hopkins 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left in the game, Vaia was fouled. With six seconds left, he made two free throws to essentially put the game away. The Friars’ Lucas Kolovitz scored on a putback basket at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Hanley tied Vaia for scoring honors with 17 points. Loury added 13 points and Andrew Veon 11 as the Bulldogs won with their customary scoring balance.

“We’re a senior-dominated group,” Reingruber said. “We’ve been through a lot of battles. We’re used to winning and knowing what kind of plays it takes to win, and we made it happen again tonight.”

Peck praised his team’s effort, especially from the Friars’ underclassmen and senior Lucas Kolovitz.

“We’re young but we never give up,” Peck said. “Trey Pettigrew got into foul trouble in the first half, but he came back and gave us a huge lift. Kaden Cobb is playing some big minutes. Bryce had another good game.”

Kolovitz finished with nine points and 13 rebounds, while senior guard Solomon Oraegbu added 14 points and five rebounds for the Friars.

“RBHS is a good rebounding team and we killed them on the boards,” Peck said. “Lucas played great; he was a man tonight. He’s tough, leads by example and sets the tone for our team with his toughness.”

ost local high school basketball fans know about the rivalry between Fenwick and Oak Park-River Forest High Schools, but there’s another area rivalry between Riverside-Brookfield and Fenwick that’s just as intense.

“We know a lot of these guys from our area, and they come here for basketball,” RBHS guard Zach Vaia said after the Bulldogs’ 64-61 win Saturday at Fenwick. “I look at it as a rivalry game. It’s definitely good to come to their house and get a win.”

The victory is particularly impressive since the Bulldogs didn’t score until about halfway through the first quarter.

“We started out a little slow trying to feel things out,” RBHS coach Mike Reingruber said.

“That second quarter gave us confidence and the rest of the game we traded blows. Luckily, we came out on top.”

Vaia’s assessment of the game reflected his coach’s take.

Indeed, RBHS outscored the Friars 27-17 during a pivotal second quarter.

“We had a mental lapse defensively,” Fenwick coach Staunton Peck said. “That was our one bad quarter. We won the other three quarters, but basketball is four quarters long.”

Midway through the second quarter, Fenwick led 22-18. RBHS responded with a 12-0 run to take a 30-22 lead. The Bulldogs never trailed again and held a 33-27 advantage at halftime. Patrick Hanley and Reggie Loury each scored eight points during the Bulldogs’ surge.

“We just took a step back and everyone calmed each other down,” Vaia said about

Lions lack execution in OPRF loss

Given the extremely chilly temperatures that have been present throughout the Chicagoland area lately, it was no surprise that both Lyons Township and Oak Park and River Forest High Schools came out ice-cold at the start of Friday night’s West Suburban Conference Silver Division boys basketball matchup at the OPRF Fieldhouse.

However, both teams warmed up eventually. OPRF picked up the pace against the Lions in the second half en route to a 62-45 win.

“Oak Park is very good,” LTHS coach Tom Sloan said. “They have a lot of talented players and real good size and athleticism. We were right there with them in the first half.

But they had a couple of big runs that were a big part of the game.

“We gave up too many layups, a few too many offensive rebounds, and we didn’t necessarily get a great shot on every possession. I thought our kids played really hard, but we need to execute better on both ends of the floor.”

OPRF led 13-11 after a slow-paced opening quarter, but then went on a 10-0 scoring spree early in the second quarter to take a

Any hopes the Lions had of a rally were doused at the onset of the fourth quarter as the Huskies went on a 9-0 run, extending the latter’s advantage to 51-35 on the scoreboard. LTHS came no closer than 12 points afterwards.

“We were in a position (at the start of the fourth quarter) where we had to start to come out and pressure,” Sloan said. “Doing that against a team like OPRF is not a good recipe for us. But we did a lot of good things.

We have to focus and build upon them as we go through the last few weeks of the season.”

Senior guard Nolan Niego scored a gamehigh 22 points for the Lions.

“Nolan played very well,” Sloan said.

“He plays both ends of the floor and is tough and unselfish. He had his shot going tonight.”

Grant Niego finished with 12 points and five assists and teammate Josh Berry had seven points for LTHS (15-9, 4-5). The Lions missed senior guard Tyrese Shines (ankle injury), one of the best players in conference, against OPRF. Anthony Roberts led OPRF with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Chase Robinson contributed 16 points for the Huskies (14-8, 8-1 in West Suburban Silver).

Playing a very difficult schedule, Friars on course for 20-win season

The Fenwick High School girls basketball team hoped to give senior players Audrey Hetzer, Mary Kate Kapsch, Gianni Ortiz, and Maggie Van Ermen a win in their final regular-season home game.

“It’s a special night,” Fenwick coach Dave Power said about Senior Night. “I was tickled to death to put out a girl that hasn’t played all year (Kapsch). When I look at Mary Kate - who hasn’t been medically cleared to play - and put her in the starting lineup, I couldn’t have been more proud.”

Unfortunately, visiting Marist spoiled the party. The Redhawks scored the game’s first ten points and never trailed en route to a 4744 victory on Saturday.

“The emotions of Senior Night, sometimes the girls get a little too wound up,” Power said. “The first quarter showed that. Marist is a nice team, but I loved how our girls came back. The difference in the game was that we had a few too many unforced turnovers.

“I don’t like losing, but I loved the fact that

our girls never quit. We were right down to the wire, but we just have to do a better job of getting off to better starts.”

Fenwick (19-11) committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter alone. One reason for the staggering amount may be due to the absence of Ortiz, the team’s starting point guard. She suffered a severe ankle sprain recently and Power lamented her loss.

“We really missed G tonight,” he said.

“She’s one of our leaders. She’s our captain and floor general.”

Despite the numerous first-half turnovers, Fenwick battled back. After falling behind 10-0, the Friars outscored Marist 2015 the remainder of the first half to trail 2520 at intermission.

Marist seemed poised to put the game out of reach, increasing its lead to 41-30 in the third quarter, But the Friars put together a fourth-quarter rally that brought them within one possession on a couple of occasions. However, Fenwick could never tie or take the lead, and turned the ball over on its final possession with three seconds left in the game.

“Lauren had an outstanding game. She was everywhere,” Power said. “I really liked Audrey’s game and Maggie has had a really nice season.”
