Riverside native and Brook Park instructor up for award

Two area teachers have been named finalists for the prestigious Golden Apple award for excellence in teaching.

Riverside resident Melissa Halusek and Brook Park School third-grade teacher Alyssa Lipuma are among the 30 finalists for the award. Lipuma, 27, is the youngest finalist chosen this year.

Halusek has taught second grade at Pleasantdale Elementary School in LaGrange for the past 17 years.

“It’s such an honor to be a finalist and to be nominated,” said Halusek, who found out that she was finalist while sitting alone in her classroom eating lunch and checking her email. “It feels great to be acknowledged for hard work, but I also to want to keep making a difference with children.”

The village of Brookfield appears ready to move ahead on drafting a preliminary agreement with a firm interested in ex-

ploring redevelopment of the long-shuttered Brookfield Bowl, 3415 Maple Ave. Hinsdale-based Tartan Builders, which is also redeveloping property on Burlington Avenue in downtown Brookfield, wants time to explore possible options for

the bowling alley and adjacent parking lot.

The properties are owned by the village of Brookfield, which acquired them through Cook County’s no-cash bid program.

Hoping to stop what’s been a revolving door to the director’s office during the past three and a half years, the North Riverside Public Library district Board of Trustees has hired Natalie Bazan as the library’s new full-time director.

Bazan, 36, started her job Feb. 12 after an eight-month stint as the director of the River Valley District Library in Port Byron, a small town overlooking the Mississippi River near the Quad Cities.

“She did a wonderful two interviews with us,” said library board President Annette Corgiat. “She’s very knowledgeable and has done a lot.”

Bazan was just 28 years old and had never worked as a library administrator when, in 2011, she landed her first job as parttime director of the tiny public library in Hopkins, Michigan – in the midst of a referendum campaign NATALIE BAZAN to create a public liLibrary director brary district.

The referendum – the first tax increase vote for the library in more than a decade – was a success, and Bazan would remain director in Hopkins for almost six years, picking another part-time director job in Door Township, Michigan, a 15-minute drive away.

“By me getting out in the community, they had a face to put with the library,” said Bazan. “Having the director out there and being able to see that person and realize that they care is always a huge thing.”

In 2017, Bazan relocated to Illinois – to a small town near Elgin – to be with her fiancé and landed the director’s job in Port Byron.

The daily commute was two hours each way, so the roughly 50-minute drive to North Riverside will be a comparative breeze.

Bazan and her fiancé, Jim Starosta, plan to wed in May. If his last name sounds familiar, it might be because he is the son of

When Bazan saw the North Riverside job posting online and looked at a map, she saw it was next to Brookfield Zoo. She asked Starosta if he knew about the village, and he replied, “I basically grew up there.”

Bazan, who has a master’s degree in library science from the University of Illinois and a master’s in Slavic language and literature from the University of Kansas, is the North Riverside Public Library’s fifth director since mid-2014, when longtime director Bob Lifka retired.

Lifka was replaced by Ted Bodewes, who was at North Riverside about two years before moving on to the Thomas Ford Memorial Library in Western Springs.

In November 2016, the board hired Lorene Kennard, who lasted less than a year and parted company last September. Since that time, retired longtime Elmhurst Public

Library Director Marilyn Boria has guided the North Riverside institution while the board searched for a permanent replacement.

Corgiat said Boria will remain on board for at least two to three more weeks to provide a transition and finish up some projects she’s been working on for the past several months.

“I can’t say enough about Marilyn,” Corgiat said. “We had a lot of things changing and she got us right back to where we were.

She’s been our guiding light.”

Bazan spent the morning of her first day at work mainly getting acquainted with the facility and staff and meeting with Boria.

She said she is hoping to connect the library with more community groups and expand programs and services.

“This library has a lot to offer,” Bazan said.

According to Corgiat, Bazan’s starting annual salary is $66,500.

The Brookfield Public Library Board of Trustees cut ties with its longtime architect on Feb. 7, voting unanimously to select Product Architecture and Design, a small Chicagobased firm that specializes in library design.

In choosing Product Architecture, trustees bypassed the architect it had been using since 2012, Michael Mackey formerly of Dewberry and more recently of Studio GC, the firm the library board hired in late 2014.

Studio GC was one of four firms that made presentations to the library board on Feb. 2, but trustees ranked Product Architecture above their longtime firm.

“Product Architecture and Design, their specialty is really remodeling … that is their strength, and this is exactly what we need for this kind of a project,” said library board President Linda Kampschroeder.

Of the four firms presenting concepts to the board – the other two were Engberg Anderson and William Architects – Product Architecture was the only one to present at least one concept that didn’t require closing Lincoln Avenue. All of the architects used the former church property for parking They were also the only firm, Kampschroeder said, that called for completely gutting the existing library facility and redesigning the interior space from scratch, and their cost estimates included all aspects of the project, down to the furniture.

The firm indicated it had obtained grant funding for other projects they’d worked on in the past.

“That showed me they really are in tune with what our needs are,” Kampschroeder said.

Trustee Dianne Duner said she liked Product Architecture’s “global perspective” and was particularly enthusiastic about Product Architecture’s interior design abilities.

Duner’s only note of caution was the fact that Product Architecture’s conceptual designs including additions that were among the smallest, at right around 4,000 square feet.

Such an addition would mean the library would be expanded to only about 17,500 square feet, which is well short of the 32,000 square feet the library board had sought when it was contemplating a brand new facility.

“Are we getting enough space to make a

critical difference?” Duner asked.

But other trustees said that the board would need to ensure any design was big enough, and that the proposed designs were just concepts.

“It’s great to have space, but it’s more important how you use it,” said Trustee Jennifer Perry, who said Product Architecture was her first choice previously, but passed them over because they hadn’t done a new building from the ground up.

“There’s a lot of wasted space in this building, and I think [Product Architecture] is best suited to come up with a way for us to maximize what we do have,” Perry said.

Trustee Carol Vaughn Kissane, who was on the library board when the existing library was built in the mid-1980s, said she was also impressed with Product Architecture and Design for “thinking outside the box.”

“I liked that their ideas were within the budget that we gave them,’ Kissane said. “I liked that they wanted to go for grants … [and] they seemed very anxious and willing to work with the village, which impressed me.”

In late 2017, the library board abandoned its year-long quest to build a new library on land it purchased six years ago at 3541 Park Ave., the former site of Brookfield United Methodist Church.

Instead, the board solicited proposals from architectural firms, asking them for conceptual plans for an addition to the existing library, 3609 Grand Blvd. The library board asked firms to be inventive while including certain specific elements, such as a large, divisible meeting room capable of holding 100 people, a quiet reading room, study rooms, physically separate adult and children’s areas, outdoor education space and parking.

Firms were also asked to keep cost estimates for their conceptual plans in the range of $6 million.

“The designs the firm showed us [on Feb. 2] were just tools, the possibilities of what we could do with resources that are available to us,” Kampschroeder said, “and also to give us an insight into these firms – how they work and the creativity of the firm.”

Library officials will now work to hammer out a contract with Product Architecture before the firm begins designing the expansion/ renovation of the library. Officials expect that the design and village vetting process could take a year to complete.

“We really need to just clean the slate here and make use of every square inch,” Kampschroeder said.

Riverside development on real estate ‘rescue’ TV show ‘The Deed’ takes on Lionel Road new-construction effort

A Riverside home development company will be featured on a real estate “rescue” television show next fall, which will chronicle the completion of a new single-family home presently under construction on Lionel Road.

Riverside Village Manager Jessica Frances confirmed last week that “The Deed: Chicago” has gotten the go-ahead to begin filming segments at the property, which is being developed by a firm called Safe and Sound Investments, owned by Riverside couple Nicolas and Caren Isopo.

“The Deed: Chicago” is a reality show currently airing its second season on the cable news network CNBC. The show is similar to many of the buy-and-flip shows that air frequently on cable TV, but with a twist.

Conlon, an Irish immigrant whose rags-to-riches story is introduced at the start of each episode invests in the atrisk projects in the hope of saving the day and sharing in the profits when all is said

The couple gradually ramped up their efforts to include major expansions of modest single family homes, providing luxury fin-

ishes and top-end sale prices.

A plain Chicago-style bungalow on Lawton Road in Riverside, which the company completely renovated and added a second-story addition, sold late last year for $748,000. Another major renovation/expansion project on a 1917-era frame bungalow in Oak Park remains on the market with a list price of $759,000.

The Lionel Road project, however, is a different animal. It’s Safe and Sound Investment’s first from-the-ground-up home building project, breaking ground at the end of November 2017.

Neighbors were notified in late January that filming for the show would begin soon and run through the end of May. According to the unit production manager for the program, Sylvetta Christmas, neighbors aren’t likely to notice much filming activity. The five-person, two-camera crew travels in a minivan.

“There are no trucks, trailers or stars,” Christmas said. “It’s pretty low key. You won’t even know we’re there.”

Nicolas Isopo declined to answer questions about the filming, citing non-disclosure agreements he signed with the show’s production company.

Former Riverside cop shot in Colorado Marcus Yanez released from hospital after being wounded in shootout

A former Riverside police officer was wounded in the line of duty during a shootout between police and a suspected car thief in Colorado Springs on Feb. 5.

Marcus Yanez, now a detective for the Colorado Springs Police Department, was one of six people shot during the gun battle. El Paso County Deputy Micah Flick was killed and two other county sheriff ’s deputies were wounded, in addition to Yanez.

It’s been a particularly violent start to 2018 for police in Colorado. Six officers have been killed in the line of duty since Dec. 31, 2017.

When the Landmark published a story in mid-December about perennial candidate and neo-Nazi Art Jones being the only Republican candidate and de facto nominee for Congress in the 3rd Congressional District, the story drew little attention.

But the Lyons white supremacist went international last week after the Chicago Sun-Times interviewed Jones at a local restaurant. Suddenly Jones, 70, has received more attention than he has ever received in a lifetime of controversial white nationalist activism.

Almost immediately, there were links and summaries of the Sun-Times story in national and international publications such as Newsweek and the Haaretz newspaper in Israel.

Two local television stations came out to interview Jones and on Feb. 8 Jones was on national television being interviewed, and ridiculed, by CNN anchor Alisyn Camerata.

“The media have gone nuts over this,” Jones told the Landmark on Monday. “You would think Adolph Hitler has risen from the grave the way they’re carrying on.”

Jones said that CNN set a car to his Lyons apartment to pick him a 5:30 a.m. to take him downtown for his CNN interview He and Camerata engaged in a combative seven-minute interview shortly before 7 a.m. Jones said that his website received a lot of views after the interview.

“As a result of that, just that one short little interview, I got 20,000 visits to my website,” Jones said. “I certainly busted through the blackout, didn’t I?”

Jones is assured of being the Republican candidate in the heavily Democratic 3rd Congressional District in November, because no other Republican filed to run in the March 20 primary. The Illinois Republican Party has repudiated Jones.

Incumbent Dan Lipinski, of Western Springs, faces newcomer Marie Newman, of LaGrange, in the Democratic primary.

The 3rd Congressional District has been in Democratic hands since 1975.

Jones says that he has not been part of any Nazi organization for nearly 40 years.

In 1980, he founded his America First Committee. Its principles – anti-Semitism, fear of immigrants and white supremacy -- are in line with neo-Nazi views, though Jones claims he doesn’t share that movement’s political philosophy.

Jones a couple of years ago participated in a rally in Columbia, South Carolina, protesting the decision to remove the Confederate Flag from the grounds of the state capitol at the invitation of a North Carolina Ku Klux Klan group.

But Jones says there are some white supremacist groups that he won’t associate with, like white power biker gangs and the skinhead movement.

“I don’t associate with any kind of criminal element, any militia group, anything like that,” Jones said. “But I have spoken at National Socialist meetings of the National Socialist movement.”

Divine Consign moving to North Riverside Longtime Oak Park business hopes to make the move this spring

Divine Consign, an Oak Park-based, upscale home furnishings and furniture consignment shop is leaving its longtime home at 809 S. Oak Park Ave. and moving into half of what was once Sports Authority at 1800 Harlem Ave. in North Riverside.

The new store will roughly quadruple the footprint of the business, said owner Kellie Scott, and the new location also comes with plenty of parking – something in short supply at the Oak Park location.

Of the new store, Scott said, “It’ll be the same kind of feel, but it will look much more professional and have much more space. It’ll be easier to shop, and the selection will be five times as much as in Oak Park.”

Divine Consign offers furnishings that Scott gets from sources such as Merchandise Mart showrooms, furniture stores and model homes, so customers never know exactly what they’ll find. While much of the merchandise is new or almost new, Scott said, Divine Consign is able to sell at 20 to 40 percent of the retail price.

“Our turnover is crazy,” Scott said. “People come in often, because everything is different.”

While towns like North Riverside, which depends on sales tax revenue to largely fund village operations, have seen brick-and-mortar retailers reel in an increasingly online economy, Divine Consign is growing.

“We’re hoping to triple our revenue from here [in the Oak Park location],” she said.

The store has also received a bump in traffic since Scott began, last summer, to co-host the radio call-in program “Real Estate Revealed,” which airs on 560-AM at 8 a.m. on Sundays.

Divine Consign has called Oak Park home for 10 years, the last seven on Oak Park Avenue. While she loves Oak Park, Scott said, “There was just no space big enough for us in Oak Park.”

The Oak Park store employs 10 people, Scott said, but she expects that number to grow when the move to North Riverside finally is made.

There’s no firm opening date for the North Riverside location, Scott said, but she’s aiming for a date in the spring to open the doors there. It’s unclear when Divine Consign will be leaving the Oak Park location, which is currently under lease.

Divine Consign occupies about 10,000

square feet of space in Oak Park, but Scott said the store can only use about 4,500 square feet of that area. The North Riverside location is roughly 20,000 square feet.

The business also has a 12,000-square-foot warehouse in LaGrange, which it will maintain for at least a time after the North Riverside store opens. However, said Scott, “the intention is to consolidate everything in North Riverside.”

Scott, a former attorney, also previously owned a clothing consignment resale business called Trends, but she sold that business last August.

Build out on the new space has not yet started and is dependent on the former Sports Authority being divided by the building’s owner. The other half of the space has been leased by the Cook County Health and Hospital System, which is planning to open a 21,000-square-foot primary care health center there.

The county has already submitted its building plans to the village of North Riverside, and the health center is expected to open in late 2018. The county is paying $26,706 a month to lease the space for the first five years of its 10-year lease.

Voters in the 4th Congressional District – which includes all of Riverside except the very southern tip of the First Division, all of North Riverside east of 13th Avenue and most of Brookfield north of Southview Avenue – can get an up-close-and-personal glimpse at the three Democrats running in the March 20 primary at a pair of upcoming candidate forums.

Indivisible West Suburban Action League, Indivisible Berwyn and Indivisible Brookfield will co-host a forum on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Riverside Township Hall, 27 Riverside Road in Riverside.

All three candidates on the Democratic primary ballot, Sol Flores, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and Richard Gonzalez will appear at the event, which is being moderated by Politico senior reporter Natasha Korecki. Questions will range from immigration to gun control.

The three candidates are vying to be the Democratic nominee in the 4th District, which for the past 25 years has been represented

by Congressman Luis Gutierrez. Riverside, Brookfield and North Riverside became part of the 4th District after the boundaries were redrawn in 2011.

ing from Congress, setting off a stampede of candidates filing nominating petitions to run.

Eight Democrats and four Republicans filed to run in the primaries, but through withdrawals and successful petition challenges, the Democratic field is down to three candidates.

Flores is the founder of La Casa Norte, which provides services to families and children facing homelessness. Gonzalez is a Chicago police sergeant, while Garcia is a Cook County commissioner who has been endorsed by Gutierrez.

The lone Republican candidate remaining in that primary race is Riverside resident Mark Lorch, an investment banker and political novice. He will not appear at the forum, which is for the competitive Democratic race.

Man arrested after threatening family members A former Riverside man remains in custody at Cook County Jail after he was arrested for allegedly threatening to harm family members and burn down their home for failing to give him money.

Ted Coffman, 55, reportedly showed up at his mother’s house on Jan. 12 and demanded money from her. When she refused, according to police, Coffman told his 85-year-old mother and another relative that he would “slice their throats and set the house on fire.”

Coffman fled the scene before police arrived, but Riverside police alerted other agencies that they wanted him detained. On Feb. 10 at 1:40 a.m., Cicero police arrested Coffman after responding to a call of a suspicious person.

Police charged Coffman, who has not lived in Riverside for at least two years, with two counts each of assault and disorderly conduct. He has been arrested more than 55 times in the past, according to police, and he is being held on $25,000 bond.

Infant left in unlocked car North Riverside police charged a 27-year-old Maywood woman with endangering the life of a child after she allegedly left her 1-year-old son asleep in a car seat inside her unlocked vehicle, which was parked in the lot at Tony’s Finer Foods, 7401 25th St. on Jan. 31 at 9:15 a.m.

A store employee called police after checking on the infant’s well-being. At 9:21 a.m. a woman pushing a shopping cart containing several bags of groceries approached the vehicle and confirmed the vehicle was hers.

Surveillance video indicated that the baby had been left in the unlocked, unattended vehicle for a full half hour. Police also contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Dogs on the loose Riverside police cited a 29-year-old Berwyn man for letting his dogs run at large after officers spent the better part of an hour trying to corral and then return a pair of pit bulls found wandering in and out of traffic on Harlem Avenue between Longcommon Road and East Burlington Street on the morning of Feb. 9.

An officer responded to the scene at about 9:50 a.m. and reported observing two brown pit bulls without collars running in the middle of the 3200 block of Harlem Avenue.

The dogs eventually made their way into the 400 block of Addison Road and wandered into an open garage, where the officer corralled them by hitting a garage door opener mounted on the outside of the structure.

According to police, while the dogs didn’t attack anyone, they would at times display ag-

gressive behavior, such as growling at police and other pedestrians. Several other police officers arrived to the home on Addison Road, and police were able to secure the dogs in the back of a squad car while attempting to locate their owner.

The dogs live at a home in the 3300 block of Clinton Avenue, said police.

“These two pit bulls caused police to be tied up for over 55 minutes,” said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel. “[They] also caused major traffic problems on Harlem Avenue.”

Dude, where’s my car?

Police responded to Phil’s Sports Bar and Grill, 8901 Burlington Ave., Brookfield, on Feb. 7 at about 10:20 p.m. after a 65-year-old man called to report that someone had stolen his SUV. According to police, the man said he’d parked his car on Prairie Avenue next to the bar, but that it was now missing. The man also said he’d also stopped in for drinks at two other establishments on Grand Boulevard, but that he was “positive” he parked his car next to Phil’s.

Police located the man’s car parked in the 3700 block of Grand Boulevard, next to another bar. The man told police a family member would be coming to pick him up.

Burglary Brookfield police responded to a home in the 4100 block of Prairie Avenue on the morning of Feb. 12 after a resident called to report that someone had broken into the residence.

According to police, someone broke a glass storm door to open the main door, which had a key in the door handle. The offender apparently went into the basement and overturned a garbage can, scattering garbage on the floor.

A woman who was inside the home at the time, but did not call police, reportedly heard a loud crash and locked the door of her bedroom. She told police she heard a male voice call out the name of a former roommate several times.

Nothing was reported missing from the home.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

Winners named in May from page 1 Halusek grew up in Riverside and has lived in the village all of her life except for when she attended Indiana University and for two years in her late 20s when she lived in Brookfield.

Her mother, Riverside resident Karen Halusek, was a teacher at St. Rene School on the Southwest Side of Chicago.

“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher,” Halusek said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with children. I would consider myself a lifelong learner.”

Halusek said that her favorite teacher as a child was her second-grade teacher at Central School in Riverside, Kim Zeman. She said she loves teaching second graders.

“Second graders are so wonderful to work with,” Halusek said. “They are excited about learning and you get to see so much growth.”

New path

he Brookfield Public Library Board of Trustees took its first official step toward the future last week, selecting an architect to help them forge a facility plan for the future – one that doesn’t include a brand new building, but a more modest expansion that can accomplish much of what the board wants.

The board is hewing closely to its $6 million budget, knowing there’s no appetite on the part of voters to approve a referendum that would raise taxes to pay for construction.

Our only note of caution – and one voiced during the architect selection discussion by some on the board – is this: don’t settle for less than you need.

The Brookfield Public Library, as anyone who has visited it knows, is crammed from wall to wall. Storage cabinets, the insides full and the tops stacked with more items, line meeting rooms walls.

Built in the 1980s, the building approved for construction by the library board was immediately too small for its needs. They aimed too low.

In addition, the way space is arranged in the present library adds to the problem. Gutting and re-programming the entire space will be a critical element.

Once completed, there’s not going to be another attempt to build a new library. That ship has sailed. So it’s necessary that the board get this expansion – its size and the reallocation of interior space – right.

We’re not sure the board can go as far as Daniel Burnham’s motto “Make no small plans.” This addition isn’t going to be grand. But it can’t be too small, again.

Seemed like such a nice guy If there was one thing that should not have caught the Illinois Republican Party off guard, it ought to have been Art Jones submitting nominating petitions to run for Congress sin the 3rd District.

After all, Jones has run for the office on multiple occasions and every time there are articles in various local newspapers – like the Landmark – outlining Jones’ neo-Nazi views and his past activities in support of white supremacy.

That he hasn’t ever had much of an impact on any race shouldn’t matter. When he appears on the ballot as the Republican candidate for Congress in the 3rd District in November, Republicans across the district and state ought to hang their heads in shame.

Ceding the ballot to a neo-Nazi is unforgiveable. Even if the district has been a Democratic stronghold for the past 40-plus years, the GOP owes its own voters a candidate who represents its traditional values – unless, of course, the party has given up on that, too.

It should also be a wake-up call for anyone who has ever had a nominating petition shoved in their direction, either by someone going door-to-door or standing outside a farmers market, collecting signatures.

Art Jones seems like a harmless guy. He’s personable; he likes to talk. “Sure, I’ll sign,” you say.

And then you wake up a couple of months later to learn you have a neo-Nazi, unopposed, on the primary ballot, because the local party leaders didn’t bother to slate a candidate.

As Charles Pierce would say, “This is your democracy, America.

Cherish it.”

Brennan honored with IHSA Award

R

iverside resident and Riverside-Brookfield High School employee Brian Brennan received some special notice recently when Principal Kristen Smetana presented him with a Recognition Award plaque on behalf of the Illinois High School Association.

Brennan serves as a crucial contact person for the school’s athletic department, assisting teams and officials when they are at RBHS. Receiving the award from RB Principal Kristin Smetana who talked of the services Brennan provides and how he became a recipient. He was nominated for the IHSA award by officials who come to referee events at the school.

Brennan has been around sports for 50 years, attending Oak Park and River Forest High School where he participated in basketball and cross country. He began coaching students at St. Edmund School in Oak Park while a high school senior.

He says he has been the officials’ point of contact at RBHS for almost 10 years, and he finds the job to his liking since it gives him a chance be to stay active in athletics. He also likes interacting with the teams, coaching staffs, officials and oth-

ers attending events at the school.

He admits he was “blindsided” when told he would receive the award and expressed his thanks to his wife, Claudia, who was in on the secret, the administration and the athletic department, in particular Donna Sifferman, who arranged for a reception for Brennan, his family and friends.

This is not the first time Brennan has been recognized for his efforts above and beyond. In 2004, he was named Person of the Year by the Riverside Township Lions Club and the Riverside Township Chamber of Commerce.

He is active with the Riverside Chamber particularly in the organizing of Riverside’s annual Holiday Stroll. He also is one of the chief planners of events on his block, Parkway Road.

Brian Brennan said he was humbled by the award, particularly how it came about and being nominated by people recognizing the job he does.

If you see Brennan around town or at RBHS, tell him “thanks.” It is a phrase that doesn’t get said enough, particularly when it is well-deserved.

Playoffs on tap for girls hoops

Area high school teams hope for extended run in postseason

Let the second season begin.

That’s the opportunity several area high school girls basketball teams, notably Nazareth, Fenwick, Riverside-Brookfield, Lyons Township and Trinity will embrace as the IHSA state playoffs rev up this week.

Since the NCAA has March Madness, consider the girls hoops upcoming itinerary as a February Frenzy of sorts.

“There is a lot more at stake in the playoffs,” LTHS guard Tessa Elliott said. “We have eight seniors on our team so we realize we’re done after one loss. We all want to make the playoffs last as long as possible.”

While expectations may vary a bit among the teams, all of them enter the postseason with a similar feeling of excitement.

Under the guidance of second-year coach Ed Stritzel, Nazareth’s aspirations for a Class 2A state title are warranted.

The Roadrunners (25-2, 6-1 East Suburban Catholic) had the best season in program history and are regarded as one of the best teams in the state in any class.

The team is led Stritzel’s daughter, Annie, who is averaging 25 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals per game. Center Alyssa Geary (14 points, 12 rebounds, 6 blocks per game), forward Marissa Metz (8 points, 5 rebounds per game) and guard Jovanna Martinucci (6 points, 6 assists per game) provide additional firepower.

The Roadrunners also should benefit from a favorable St. Joseph Sectional. The top challenger in the sectional is Fenwick (13-16), which has one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Although their record is below .500, the Friars are dangerous with seniors Kate Moore and McKenzie Blaze. Both have scored over 1,000 points at Fenwick. Lily Riordan and Gianni Ortiz provide speed in the backcourt, while Maggie Van Ermen and Margaret Planek are other key contributors.

“I think we have a good shot at making a run because our schedule has been hard,” Blaze said. “Every team we’ve played has been in 4A and now we will be facing 3A teams. I like our chances.”

Trinity, Riverside-Brookfield and Lyons Township are in the 4A playoffs.

The Blazers, seeded fourth in the Maine East Sectional, are led by guard Lauren Lee and center Alex Fanning.

Lee, who has committed to the University of CaliforniaSanta Barbara, can do it all on the court. Fanning provides an excellent post presence. Sophomores Zyerra Stafford and Dayjah Chmielewski and freshman Makiyah Williams comprise an excellent supporting cast of players.

Riverside-Brookfield and Lyons Township are in the loaded Proviso West Sectional.

RBHS (21-7, 9-2 Metro Suburban) had a terrific regular season with essentially a new starting lineup. Freshman Brenna Loftus had a breakout campaign, while Maddie Meehan and Sarah JnoBaptitse also played well.

The Bulldogs developed rapidly with an up-tempo style of play, stingy defense and good team chemistry.

“We have a pretty good chance of succeeding in regional play as long as we give it our all,” Loftus said. “We’ll have to play fast and give it our all, but I think we have a shot.”

As a freshman last year, Fenwick wrestler Jacob Kaminski compiled a 22-2 record at 195 pounds, highlighted by regional and sectional titles and a fourth-place finish at 195 pounds in the IHSA individual state tournament. Kaminski was undefeated until the state semifinal, where he lost to eventual champion Jacob Warner of Washington.

The Riverside resident returns to the State Farm Center in Champaign this week to compete in the state tourney as one of three state qualifiers -- along with Matt Zuber and Liam Mahon -- for the Friars. Kaminski (27-2) earned his berth to the state tournament with an impressive per-

formance at the Grayslake Central Sectional of the Class 2A state series on Saturday.

In the 195-pound quarterfinals, Kaminski defeated Faheem Mannan from Vernon Hills by pin at 2:56 of the match. He beat Woodstock’s Aidan Jacobs 9-3 in the semifinals. He capped off his perfect run with an 8-2 decision over Liam O’Donnell of Crystal Lake in the title bout.

At 285 pounds, Mahon (23-9) finished third to earn his way to the state tournament.

After losing in the quarterfinals to Notre Dame’s Gabe Fitzpatrick, Mahon won four straight matches, all by pin, en route to qualifying for state. Mahon pinned Wake Caldero from Grayslake North at 1:58 in the third-place match.

Zuber went 3-2 to place fourth at 132, as the Friars’ third state qualifier. After winning three straight matches, Zuber lost in the third-place match to Crystal Lake Central’s Caden Ernd via a pin at 2:15.

Ruston fared the best among the five sectional qualifiers, splitting four matches. The rest of the group went 1-8, collectively.

Riley Shaw (23-18), Riverside-Brookfield’s lone representative, lost two matches by tech fall and pin ay 195.

Montini dominated at Hinsdale Central by advancing wrestlers in 12 weight classes to state and amassing 18 pins.
