On Feb. 26, the District 208 Board of Education voted unanimously to accept Superintendent Kevin Skinkis’ recommendation to hire Hector Freytas as RiversideBrookfield High School’s new principal.

The 34-year-old Cicero resident will become the school’s first Hispanic principal in a district whose Hispanic population has grown to more one-third of total enrollment.

The Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission on Feb. 28 took its third crack

at recommending changes to what kinds of commercial uses should be allowed in the Eight Corners business district, choosing to eliminate many that could both draw people to the area and produce sales tax revenue.

Commissioners voted 5 to 2 to recommend amending the use table for the district to prohibit daycare businesses, cultural exhibits, parks/recreation facilities, religious assembly, general indoor and outdoor assem-

bly/entertainment, fraternal organizations, artist studios or art instruction, community gardens and auto service/body shops.

Coonley Coach House hits the market for $1.1 million

On the heels of the sale of the famous “public wing” of the Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned Coonley House in Riverside last month, another residence on the grounds of the once sprawling estate is on the market.

The estate’s former coach house, 336 Coonley Road, which was converted into a single-family home in the 1950s and completely renovated by its present owner, Ella Mae Eastman and her late husband Dean, in 200607, is listed for $1.1 million.

Although it was part of the original estate, which was built between 1906 and 1912, and retains the long, horizontal lines of Wright’s signature Prairie Style, the residence itself is contemporary inside – from its mechanical systems and new radiant floor heating to the open-plan kitchen/dining area, large family room and three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.

“It’s not a 100-year-old house; it’s basically a new house,” said Ella Mae Eastman during a tour of her home last week.

The Eastmans rescued the coach house, just as they’d rescued and restored the Coonley House’s public wing during the first decade of the 2000s. Their stewardship, however, followed in the footsteps of the couple who saved the entire estate from demolition and redevelopment a half century earlier.

Carolyn and James Howlett were the ones who convinced a developer to convert the Coonley Estate’s outbuildings into residences, taking on the coach house as their particular project.

The Howletts lived in the coach house until their deaths – James in 2000 and Carolyn in 2006. The Eastmans had purchased the coach house from Carolyn’s estate in 2005. Suffering from Alzheimer’s, Carolyn Howlett’s affairs

The coach house was in disrepair and needed a new roof. The Eastmans intervened to prevent the building’s essential character from being altered, buying the home and allowing Carolyn to live there until her death.

After that, the Eastmans embarked on a complete overhaul of not only the home but its grounds, including restoring its private interior garden with a reflecting pool framed by beds of irises and uncovering raised planters original to the estate but camouflaged under debris and overgrowth.

The Eastmans put the renovated coach house on the market for the first time in 2008 for $1.6 million, but they eventually moved from the main home into the coach house as they attempted to sell the much larger residence.

“It was more public that house, and we shared it a lot with people, and I actually enjoyed that. It was fun meeting people and having events there,” Ella Mae Eastman said.

“This [coach house] is just more private, more personal.”

Although far smaller than the public wing of the main home, the coach house still checks in at about 2,300 square feet, though it’s all on one level.

In addition to the newly renovated space, the new buyer will also inherit some select pieces of furniture, like the custom-made circular sofa (designed by a grandson of the Coonleys, Winthrop Faulkner) in the formal living room, which looks out onto the garden.

Also staying with the home is a wood sculpture made by Carolyn Howlett from pieces of an original fence from the estate and an abstract painting by Howlett that now is displayed in the dining area.

“I think it should be with the house,” Eastman said.

The new owners will also inherit a pair of sculptures in the garden, “Adam and Eve”

by Chicago sculptor Egon Weiner, perhaps best known for his “Pillar of Fire” sculpture outside the Chicago Fire Academy.

Brookfield police on Feb. 26 issued five citations to a 52-year-old Brookfield man after he, on two occasions, allegedly cut locks that had been attached to the tennis court gates at Ehlert Park to prevent people from bringing dogs inside that area.

According to police, the village’s public works department installed the locks on Feb. 21 as well as a “no dogs allowed” sign. On Feb. 24, someone called police to report that the locks had been cut and left on the ground on top of a note saying if the locks reappeared, they’d be cut off “over + over + over again.”

Public works installed new locks on Feb. 25, but the next morning the lock and chain securing the east gate to the tennis courts were missing. Police inspected video from surveillance cameras located in Ehlert Park and identified a suspect, who was seen in the video walking a dog near the tennis courts at about 5:40 a.m. on Feb. 25. After standing at the east gate to the tennis courts with his dog for a moment, the man is seen leaving the area and then returning a few minutes later with a pair of bolt cutters.

The same man was seen on surveillance video from Feb. 22 playing basketball outside the tennis courts before his ball bounces into the locked tennis court area. He later is seen walking back into the park, holding the handwritten note.

Police arrested the offender at his home near the park and later issued him four citations for damage to village property and one for taking the lock and chain from the east gate on Feb. 25.

Go the speed limit? That’s a punching A 23-year-old Brookfield man went to police on Feb. 24 at about 8:50 p.m. after being punched in the face during an apparent road rage incident at the intersection of First Avenue and Cermak Road in North Riverside.

The victim told police he was northbound on First Avenue traveling at the posted speed limit when a vehicle came up behind tailgating him and flashing its lights. The victim said as he stopped for a red light at Cermak Road, the other vehicle went around him and stopped suddenly in front of him.

A woman exited the car and started yelling at the victim, who lowered the driver’s side window. At that time an unknown man came up to the victim and punched him in the face, causing his glasses to break. The couple then got back into their vehicle and continued northbound on First Avenue.

March 1 at about 2 a.m. reported seeing what appeared to be a black T-shirt smoldering in the middle of the roadway.

Upon further examination, the shirt was smoking as if it had been lit on fire, although there were no signs of an accelerant. The officer disposed of the T-shirt.

Late night visitor Brookfield paramedics transported a 19-year-old North Riverside man to the hospital after he reportedly refused to leave a Brookfield home where the homeowner, mistakenly believing the man was a friend of his son’s, let him in on March 3 at around 12:20 a.m.

Police reported the man appeared to be under influence of hallucinogens and had an abrasion under one eye and scrapes on his knuckles as if he’d fallen down. The man told police he’d been drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis earlier that night and that he believed he was in North Riverside.

The man had knocked on the door of a home in the 3400 block of Prairie Avenue.

After being let inside, he reportedly refused to leave until someone called him a ride home.

Package theft Brookfield police responded to a home in the 4400 block of Madison Avenue last week after a resident called to report that he never received a dashboard camera he’d purchased online and which was delivered

by Amazon on Feb. 19.

The camera cost about $120, according to the police report. The victim reported the incident to police on Feb. 27 in order to receive a replacement.

Turning off the gas A general contractor for a property under construction in the 3400 block of Maple Avenue, Brookfield, contacted police on Feb. 28 to report that over the past couple of months someone has been turning off the gas to the building.

In addition, the gas had been shut off several times at a separate nearby property owned by the same person.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Feb. 24-March 3, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

These cases have not been adjudicated.

Another woman reportedly also tried to purchase a pair of gift cards at the same Target using a debit card stolen in the robbery, but was unsuccessful. Later that same night, police said, Truell and another man reportedly entered a Jimmy John’s restaurant in Hillside, where both men successfully purchased food using a credit card stolen in the robbery.

Police reportedly obtained video evidence from Jewel and Target and a transaction receipt identifying Truell by name from another North Riverside business during their investigation.

North Riverside Police Chief Deborah Garcia said no more arrests are expected to be made related to the case.

Riverside crime numbers continue to fall Lowest total in at least 15 years, but some violent crime ticked up

A violent weekend in late January that startled Riverside residents may or may not indicate what’s in store, crime wise, for the village over the long haul in 2019. But if last year is any indication, the number of serious crimes will continue to be low in Riverside.

According to a preliminary report issued

by Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel on Feb. 21, the number of serious crimes as determined by the FBI was down by 5.5 percent last year compared to 2017.

In all, Riverside reported 104 serious crimes – the lowest number in recent memory -- and marked the fifth consecutive year that the number of crimes had dropped year over year.

In 2017, Riverside reported 110 serious crimes.

“It’s not a huge number,” said Weitzel referring to the difference between 2017 and 2018.

“But I always say I’d prefer the numbers to be down than up.”

The numbers come from the village’s Uniform Crime Report, which Riverside submits every year to the Illinois State Police. The Uniform Crime Report tracks the eight categories of violent and property crime that the FBI considers the most important – murder, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault/battery, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

The state numbers are compiled by the FBI to comprise its national crime survey.

Cops: Plainfield man stole Riverside couple’s identity Suspect allegedly bought info on dark web, routed deliveries to vacant homes

A 21-year-old Plainfield man has been charged with stealing the identities of a Riverside husband and wife on the dark web and then using the information to purchase thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise, rerouting delivery to vacant or foreclosed homes in the southwest suburbs.

Naperville police apprehended Rehan Arif on Feb. 26 after he allegedly picked up packages delivered to a foreclosed, vacant house in the 5600 block of Bergamot Court in Naperville.

Arif remains free while awaiting trial after posting 10 percent of the $10,000 bond set by a Cook County Circuit Court judge at a hearing Feb. 28 at the Maybrook courthouse. His next

hearing is scheduled for March 11.

Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said that Will County Sheriff ’s Police have filed paperwork seeking to revoke Arif ’s probation related to a case there. According to Will County court records, in 2017 Arif pleaded guilty to a felony drug offense and was sentenced to three years of court supervised release after being credited with 97 days of jail time served. He was also fined $4,420.

According to Riverside police, Arif would use stolen credit card and personal information to order items. He would initially use the victim’s home address when ordering the merchandise but later would reroute delivery to a vacant home.

Arif would park his car near the home where the packages were to be delivered and monitor the tracking number on a laptop computer inside his vehicle, according to police.

After delivery was made, he would pick up the items and drive away, police said.

Weitzel said Arif used the Riverside couple’s information in that way at least three times in

February, but they weren’t his only victims.

Weitzel said police seized and obtained a search warrant for Arif ’s 2005 Nissan Sentra, where they found packages addressed to other victims and delivered to a Bolingbrook address. Police have also obtained a warrant for Arif ’s cellphone and are working to glean additional information from that device.

The Riverside victims have endured repeated attempts by people to use their stolen information to make purchases on the web or obtain cash.

Police say the personal information of both the husband and wife was stolen during a large data breach in 2015 at the University of Chicago’s Department of Medicine, where they both worked at the time.

That information was then traded on the dark web, an area of the internet that is not accessible through traditional search engines and which traffics in all manner of illegal merchandise – from stolen identities to weapons and drugs.

In 2018, the victims were notified that their

identification had been used by someone to fraudulently obtain $16,000 from a bank in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Video evidence from that incident indicated that it was a different offender than the most recent incident. Riverside police continue to work with Edgerton police on that case.

The Riverside victims reported to police that between Feb. 14 and 19, they’d been defrauded of more than $2,000. On Feb. 19, police got a break when one of the victims called to report that an electric bass guitar that had been purchased using her information was delivered to her home. The victim refused delivery.

On Feb. 26, the victim, who had set up alert notification on all of her accounts, received notice at about 10 a.m. that packages in her name were to be delivered to a Naperville address.

Naperville police staked out the address and pulled over Arif as he drove away after taking packages from the front porch of the Bergamot Court home and throwing them into his vehicle.

Larger budget deficits forecast for RBHS’future Officials could seek referendum when building bonds are paid

A new five-year financial forecast predicts larger operating budget deficits for Riverside Brookfield High School over the next few years than previously forecast.

The new forecast was presented to the school board at its Feb. 26 meeting by RBHS Principal Kristin Smetana, who on July 1 will take on primary responsibility for finance as part of her new role in the newly created position of assistant superintendent.

This year’s operating deficit is now projected to be $214,470 which is a slight decrease of the previous projection of $231,000. The reduction in the projected deficit this year is the result of art teacher Suzanne Zimmerman taking a full year parental leave.

Operating deficits are projected to balloon to about $730,000 in fiscal years 2020 and 2021 before dropping to nearly $480,000 in 2022 and then falling further to nearly $220,000 in 2023.

Kristoff has been on paid administrative leave since Feb. 14, charged with insubordination for not following directives to cover certain topics at a staff meeting held on Feb. 13.

“All I would say to you is that she didn’t follow some directives,” said Co-interim Superintendent Patrick Patt.

Kristoff is also accused of making derogatory and false statements about the co-interim superintendents to staff.

For pinball wizards, Ogden Avenue beckons Galloping Ghost unveils new arcade dedicated to rare, classic games

Although Doc Mack made his name in Brookfield as the owner of the world’s largest video game arcade, Galloping Ghost Arcade, pinball machines were a tiny presence at the now 700-plus machine gaming emporium.

But any pinball enthusiast who may have felt slighted by their absence at Galloping Ghost’s mothership can get their fix over at Mack’s newest venture, Galloping Ghost Pinball inside a former insurance office at 9213 Ogden Ave. The new arcade – sandwiched between the Galloping Ghost GAMA martial arts gym to the east and Galloping Ghost Productions Inc. to the west – opened March 1 with 31 machines dating from as far back as the 1970s right up to the present day.

In time, Mack said he expects the pinball arcade to expand into office space in the rear of the building, offering space for a total of about 50 machines.

“I don’t know pinball as well as I do the videogame side, but we definitely want to have a lot of the rare games and the most well-known games as well,” said Mack.

Pinball had such a small presence at the video arcade, Mack said, because the machines require a lot of maintenance. But when he finally decided to take them out completely, he got some pushback.

“The reason for even doing [the pinball arcade] was it was the thing people asked for the most,” Mack said. “The more we put out crazy, rare [video] games, it was ‘we want pinball.’”

So Mack sought out pinball dealer Troy Smith to help locate rare machines.

“The stuff he started finding for us was just outrageous,” Mack said.

A smaller room to the west houses older games, like Fireball from 1977 and machines named after hugely popular early video arcade games like Defender and Q-Bert’s Quest.

But what devotees will no doubt gravitate toward are one-of-a-kind unicorns like Varkon, a pinball game designed to look like an arcade game, with flippers operated by joy sticks and a mirror reflecting a recessed playing surface that serves as a “screen.”

Once Troy Smith located Alien, another movie-themed rarity, Mack said he decided to go for seriously rare games.

“They did not make many of them and it, for collectors, is just like ridiculous,” Mack said of Alien. “This was going to be our big showpiece, and then once we got this other games just started popping up.”

Like the game Predator – a one-off game based on the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film that is possibly the most controversial pinball machine ever produced.

The game’s creators built the machine but failed to obtain licensing from the owners of the Predator, killing the project in its tracks. Lawsuits ensued by people who had posted cash for pre-orders of the promised machines, which never materialized.

Mack said Predator is easily the most expensive machine he’s ever purchased. On average the machines cost $5,000 to $6,000, he said. Arcade games pale in comparison at a few hundred dollars each.

But the point is not to pay lots of money for a collector’s item and have it gather dust, but to allow the game to be enjoyed by

And earlier this year, he and another employee formed a partnership to buy and operate an auto shop – called Galloping Ghost Garage, naturally – at 9428 Ogden Ave., kitty corner from Galloping Ghost Arcade.

According to Mack, many of his employees own sports cars and motorcycles and wanted a place they could soup up their vehicles and still be close to where the work was happening.

Mack revealed that he purchased the business from Joe Pomazal, who still works at the shop as the master technician, pinball enthusiasts.

“Any other collector, it would stay in a collection and nobody would get to play it, and it would just kind of be gone. Nobody would ever see it again,” Mack said. “One of the reasons people have been so interested in us doing pinball is that there’s so many games that people only dream of playing.”

Galloping Ghost Pinball is open seven days a week from 3 to 11 p.m. and it will cost $15 to play all day. If you want to piggyback a trip to the video arcade down the street at 9415 Ogden Ave., it will cost you $30 for

“He loved doing the work, [but] he wanted to take a step away from the stresses of owning a business,” Mack said. “It all lined up.”

Mack’s partner in the business is Will Searle, who has been working as a Galloping Ghost Productions programmer for about four years. Searle still does programming from an office in the garage in between auto service jobs.

According to Mack, he’s working on potential crossover opportunities between the garage and the arcade.

“If you’re going to get your oil changed, you can go the arcade instead of just sitting there on your phone,” said Mack. “You can go down to the gym if you want while you’re getting your oil changed.”

Mack said the hours of the pinball arcade will expand once all of the staffing is in place. In the meantime, he’s been honing his pinball skills.

“There’s so much depth to pinball,” Mack said. “People think it’s all just luck and I’ve seen pro pinball players that can play all day. They know the feel of the machine.

They’ll make every shot.”

Asked where his skills stack up, Mack said he was a novice.

“I’m low. I’m a video guy,” Mack said. “I love pinball but I’m still learning it.”

With a big, outgoing personality, Freytas will bring a different vibe to the position than the friendly, but more reserved Smetana.

“His personality and his high energy level were definitely positives that the interview process highlighted,” Skinkis told the Landmark.

In a press release announcing the hire Skinkis also emphasized Freytas’ personality.

“Hector demonstrated a high energy level each round of the interview process,” Skinkis said. “He was very well prepared and did his homework on RB. He is very passionate about education and working with the students, staff, and parents. I think he will be a great instructional leader for RB. His personality and energy level will generate more school spirit and student engagement.”

Freytas demonstrated his outgoing and expressive personality in an interview after the board the voted to hire him.

“The only way to live, to me, is to live happily,” Freytas said. “You can be sad when you’re six feet under.”

Freytas said that at RBHS he would focus on building relationships. He was attracted to RBHS by the strong academics and solid community already in place. He described himself, in what is now a common phrase in leadership circles, as a servant-leader.

Freytas was chosen from a field of 40 applicants and went through three rounds of interviews. He was interviewed by committees made up of teachers, administrators and students.

Board member Gina Sierra, who is an elementary school principal, was on an interviewing committee. The other board members met Freytas for the first time in closed session on Feb. 26 before hiring him.

“He seems like a great fit for RB,” said board President Garry Gryczan.

Hispanic enrollment has been growing at RBHS over the past two decades. In 2000, the Hispanic enrollment at RBHS stood at about 11 percent. Last year, Hispanic students comprised 36.3 percent of total enrollment.

Skinkis said that Freytas’ ability to speak Spanish was a nice bonus but not a deciding factor.

“He’s bilingual,” Skinkis said. “[It] brings an extra attribute to the high school and our changing demographics. But he was by far the best candidate for the position. [Speaking Spanish] was not a deciding factor.”

Freytas received a two-year contract and will be paid $135,000 next year.

Freytas was chosen from a field of 40 applicants, one of whom was RBHS Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Kylie Lindquist.

The amended code also recommends broadcast or recording services as special uses and allows the full range of eating and drinking establishments; medical, professional and business offices; and retail businesses.

The commission also introduced a permitted new use into the recommended code to allow amusement arcades, such as the ones that exist presently on Ogden Avenue.

Hovering in the background of the vote was the desire by village officials to prohibit a church from being applied for and possibly approved as a special use in the district.

Religious assembly presently is permitted as a special use at Eight Corners, and the village board set a precedent last year when they allowed Compassion United Methodist Church religious assembly one morning a week at Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave. In voting to recommend prohibiting such a broad array of uses, particularly ones related to public assembly, commissioners and village staff clearly had that in mind.

In response to Hendricks’ concerns, Commissioner Patrick Benjamin said he largely agreed with her, but that village needed to

drawing up plans for a mixed-use structure for the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard that would include commercial spaces, condominiums and an arts center that would include an auditorium that would be used for both live theater and as his church.

After the commission’s vote to prohibit uses such as live theater and religious assembly, Sokol criticized the decision.

“It’s hard for me to see it as anything other than dishonest, disingenuous to hear people tripping over themselves to come up with alternative language just to say we’re going to extraordinary legal, financial – we’re going to shoot ourselves in the foot – just to stop the United Methodists from worshipping at Eight Corners,” Sokol said.

Sokol said his architect, Paul Straka, was working to finish detailed plans for his mixed-use proposal and that he hoped to have them in hand by this week so they could be submitted to the village.

“We’ll still submit,” Sokol said.

Paul Straka is the father of Planning and Zoning Commissioner P. Christopher Straka, who voted against recommending the sweeping use changes at Eight Corners.

The Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation will now go to the Brookfield Village Board for a final vote later this month.

Benjamin as well as Durkin and the village’s community and economic development director, Nicholas Greifer, said it’s likely the commission and village board would revisit uses in the future as the need arose.

“What I could see happening in the future is the village pulling out, for example, the bowling alley from that definition and make a standalone definition just like we did with video arcade games,” Durkin said.

Greifer suggested village planning staff might also want to examine use table definitions in other zoning districts as well.

“If we have an opportunity down the road, we could look not only at [Eight Corners] but the other districts to see if we could fine tune the language with respect to definition of uses,” Greifer said.

The Rev. Karl Sokol, who was at the Feb. 28 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting but did not speak during the public hearing, revealed publicly in January that he was

Preemptive zoning

A

fter months of being kicked back and forth between the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission and the Brookfield Village Board, the issue of what kinds of commercial uses ought to be allowed, for now, in the Eight Corners business district appears to be settled.

Last week, the Planning and Zoning Commission took its third whack at recommending changes to the business district’s use table in the village’s zoning code. It looked a lot like what village staff recommended last August.

Apart from straight retail, restaurants and bars and some service uses such as medical offices and hair and nail salons, any use where people might congregate is off the table. The one concession was allowing video game arcades as a permitted use, though the village’s existing arcade empire appears destined to remain ensconced on Ogden Avenue.

That leaves a whole lot of potentially revenue-producing enterprises – anything related to music or theater, for example – out of the mix. Also, left out in the cold are cultural uses, like artist studios, galleries or instruction.

The decision to limit uses so dramatically has everything to do with the fear of being faced with having to approve or deny the Rev. Karl Sokol’s proposed mixed-use building in the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard, which would include an arts centers space for live theater and music performances.

Why would you drive away an arts center in the midst of an otherwise sleepy commercial district in the middle of Brookfield? Because Sokol also wants the theater space to double as a church for his Compassion United Methodist Church.

Elected officials, most of the planning and zoning commissioners and the village’s legal counsel have not been shy about admitting that this is the case. Although the words “Karl Sokol” and “church” were never mentioned during the Planning and Zoning Commission’s hearing on Feb. 28, that was clearly in mind when commissioners and the attorney repeatedly referred to protecting the village from a future legal challenge.

With a village board-imposed moratorium on special use applications at Eight Corners about to expire in April, officials feel a more overarching prohibition on assembly at Eight Corners is their best protection from Sokol’s plan and a possible legal challenge.

The village’s attorney at the Feb. 28 hearing suggested the village might want to address particular uses as one-off issues as they need to be. We have to say that sounds like a really unusual preemptive zoning strategy.

Sokol said he plans on submitting plans for his proposal anyway, and we look forward to that because right now all anybody has had to go on are concepts that have been verbal only.

Perhaps when the actual building plan is submitted on paper it won’t look as frightening to officials as they think it’s going to be.

One future note for the Planning and Zoning Commission: If this matter comes before the commission in the future, we’d recommend that Commissioner P. Christopher Straka recuse himself.

Straka’s father is Sokol’s architect, and Chris Straka was one of the two commissioners voting against the sweeping use changes at Eight Corners. You could make an argument that he ought to have recused himself from that vote as well.

Focus on citizenship, create a vision for RBHS

y name is Thomas Jacobs, I am a candidate for RiversideBrookfield High School District 208 board member in the April 2 election. I decided to run because I believe we aren’t preparing our students well enough considering our rapidly changing world. We teach them well academically, but we fall short training them to ask great questions and to take real ownership of their futures.

The most consequential case in point is global warming, a man-made threat that puts at risk the very existence of humanity. We have 10-12 years to cut emissions in half or risk irreversible damage to the planet. Other challenges include the rise of artificial intelligence and its effects on future jobs, rising income inequality and the growing and socially corroding nature of our tribal politics.

What does this have to do with our high school? I believe the insight of an educator, articulated a few years after the end of World War II, contains a direct answer: “The true purpose of education is to prepare our young women and men for effective citizenship in a free form of government.”

The educator was Dwight Eisenhower, from his time as president of Columbia University in the years after his decisive leadership service in the war. The global geopolitical crisis from 80 years ago and the current environmental emergency bear a striking resemblance - they both are existential threats. What made the difference then, as it will today, is transformational leadership.

We will always owe gratitude to the members of the Greatest Generation who acted on their citizenship

duties by coming together in the face of an overarching challenge. Let us use their attitude and commitment as the example to build and educate Generation Z into a cohort committed to citizenship over partisanship, guided by science and reason, and committed to taking action.

I am advocating that we adopt a culture of courageous leadership at RB, embraced by all members of the community – taxpayers, parents, administrators, teachers, and students. The key word here is courage; for the adults to acknowledge, without blaming each other, that we bear responsibility for our precarious state of affairs, and for students to speak up about issues they care about.

As a business owner and practicing architect, I am used to acting on fiduciary responsibilities, and as a teacher, I understand the challenges and opportunities of the classroom. Yet, all decisions moving forward will only be as good as the extent to which the voices of the community are heard and understood. Therefore, I propose to launch a broadly inclusive RB community visioning process that re-calibrates our aspirations and engages students more broadly, as people and citizens.

In addition to addressing the needs of our time, this will rise academic performance which benefits property values.

On April 2, please do your part choosing the future direction of RB by going to the polls. A vote for me is a vote for a sincere effort to moving RBHS forward, together.

Riverside doesn’t need term limits Some of our village trustees have decided that Riverside needs to have term limits. As Bob Uphues said in his Feb. 13 editorial, this is a solution without a problem.

I did not know that Riverside had a problem with village trustees who had consolidated so much power that they couldn’t be voted out of office, or that we had such a surfeit of people wanting to run for village trustee that we needed a system to allow people to take turns.

Here in Riverside, as with most volunteer elected positions across our nation, it is a struggle to get enough people to take time from their lives to serve the public. I am grateful for all of them and the hundreds and thousands of additional volunteers who help get them elected.

There are never enough volunteers in politics. So

why would we want to limit them? People tout term limits as some kind of panacea without understanding why they came about in the first place and what the unintended consequences of them has been.

Let’s look at the explanations for why the trustees are putting this issue in our laps. One trustee says that he thinks “it will revitalize the town.” How? Another trustee mentions that term limits are overwhelmingly popular in the general public. Really? Where? I am unaware of any studies or polls that have been done in Riverside.

It is also being said that if there aren’t term limits, that it will “introduce political parties, partisanship, one-issue candidates.” How having term limits would eliminate any of those three things eludes me. Just See LETTERS on page 12

RBEF telethon set to celebrate its 30th year

I

magine being a high school student with an interest in a subject which may impact your life. The RiversideBrookfield Educational Foundation recognizes students’ dreams and strives to make it possible for students to further their interests by attending classes, workshops and other learning experiences.

Those experiences are made possible by funding grants through the foundation’s annual telethon, this year celebrating its 30th year.

In the past, students have attended everything from drum major workshops to an architecture program at IIT, courses in digital photography, foreign language, fine arts, leadership conferences, science and engineering programs and writing workshops to name a few.

Last year, a student attended the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists in Massachusetts, while another attended a National Student Leadership Conference on Nursing at Yale University.

Teachers and staff have also been able to apply for grants related to their areas of study.

In 2018, the RBEF awarded 41 students and teachers grants totaling over $22,000. The funds were raised through the RBEF’s Annual Telethon, presented by the CME Group.

The telethon this year is on Saturday, March 9 from 1 to 9 p.m. The live eighthour presentation can be seen on Comcast Channel 16, AT&T U-verse Channel 99 and online everywhere on www.rbtv.tv.

The telethon features live entertainment from the RB school auditorium, including magician and RBHS alumnus Trent James and Katie Hull, an alumna who with her husband, Mike, make up the popular group The Redmonds. Elvis will be in the house when Michael St. Angel brings his show to the stage. The entertainment along with interviews of past grant recipients will continue throughout the day.

The foundation can be traced back to 1987 when small group of people at the high school and in the community began fundraising efforts. That first year’s receipts were small, but made it possible to purchase some equipment for the English department.

The original committee could not have imagined how much the foundation would grow and how successful the telethon, which began in 1989, would be.

The foundation is managed by a volunteer group, and an army of volunteers will work the telethon -- from those in front of the cameras, to those behind the cameras, to those onstage and those backstage, to those on the phone bank who make this all possible.

LETTERS Continued from page 11 look at the office of the U.S. President, which has term limits, and you can see that all three of those are very much an issue with respect to that office. Term limits do not prevent partisanship, or political parties, or single issues.

Both trustee Peters and Pollock correctly identify some issues that term limits would create: a shortage of potential candidates and too much turnover already. As Roger Sherman, the only signer of all four founding documents of the United States said in 1788, “Nothing renders government more unstable than a frequent change of the persons that administer it.”

Term limits fundamentally take power away from voters. If there is an elected official who has overstayed their welcome, or whose ideas are unpopular, it

is incumbent upon the voters to speak for themselves at the election polls.

One significant unintended consequence of term limits is that it forces qualified people out of office, and creates openings for unqualified people. This became evident in the 1990s after many term limit laws were passed.

Qualified people were forced to leave office for no other reason, leaving a vacuum which was filled by people who would not otherwise have gotten elected.

Voters have the power to remove people from office, essentially to fire them if they don’t like the job they are doing. However, if they like the job they are doing, then they will and should be re-elected.

Board members weren’t saying much after the meeting, but board member Shannon Johnson, herself a teacher in another school district, said that the vote of no confidence was telling.

“Teachers don’t do that lightly,” Johnson said. “That’s a big thing.”

Some Robinson school parents are supporting Molina, who has been the principal at Robinson School, which is located in Lyons, for 14 years and taught in District 103 for six years prior to becoming principal.

Martha Gonzalez presented the board with petition signed by about 35 people supporting Molina and made a public comment at the school board meeting in support of him.

Molina said he believes Jackman was behind the no-confidence vote. Molina and Jackman taught together at George Washington Middle School in Molina’s early years at the district and have had a difficult relationship.

“Sadly, I believe this is personal attack to discredit me,” Molina said. “I’m very sad to say that I feel this is vindictive. My evaluations have always been good, with my last three being excellent, so I am confused.”

Jackman said that the no-confidence vote in Molina was not lightly taken.

“Teachers do not do things in any easy fashion when it impacts students in any way,” Jackman said. “It’s not ever something that’s done easily or without great thought.”

A call to the lawyer for Kristoff and Molina was not returned.

Parents of Lincoln School students were not told that Kristoff had been placed on administrative until 11 days after she was escorted out of Lincoln School on Feb. 14.

For more than a week, when parent Jennifer Myslinski called the school and asked to talk to Kristoff she was told that Kristoff was not available and transferred to her voice mail.

“Nobody told me for a week and a half that there was substitute principal,” Myslinski told the Landmark. “It’s affecting my child dramatically. He doesn’t want to go to school anymore.”

Myslinski made her displeasure known by making a statement during the public comment portion of the Feb. 25 school board meeting.

“I had to find out she was on leave from the newspaper,” Myslinski said. “Shame on the two interims for their lack of communication or respect for us parents and the students of Lincoln School. … Try putting students first and not your ego.”

Parents were not officially notified that Kristoff had been placed on leave until an email was sent out on the morning of Feb. 25. That same day the district posted a statement on the its website saying that the co-interim superintendents profusely apologized for the delay in notifying parents that Kristoff had been placed on leave but noted that personnel matters are sensitive.

The Landmark, March 6, 2019 leave was first reported by the Desplaines Valley News newspaper which obtained a copy of the letter of the letter to Kristoff informing her that she was being placed on leave.

The Desplaines Valley news is owned by a company whose officers include Bridgeview Mayor and state Sen. Steve Landek, a political ally of Lyons Village President Christopher Getty.

Getty backed slates of candidates for the District 103 school board in the both 2015 and 2017. Two candidates backed by Getty back in 2015 are running for re-election in April.

“We were trying to keep it confidential until somebody leaked a letter to the Desplaines Valley News,” Patt said.

The news of Kristoff being placed on leave is likely to cost the district money, Patt said.

“That letter being in the Desplaines Valley News really has screwed a lot of things up, cost-wise,” Patt said.

Former Costello School Principal Andrea Maslan, who has working for the district part time as a curriculum specialist since 2017, is now serving as the acting principal of Lincoln School.

On Feb. 25, the school board voted 4 to 2 to amend Maslan’s contract with the district to allow her to work 120 days this school year up from the 100 days that had been previously approved. Maslan is paid $500 a day.

Alice Mazanec, 91 Former Riverside resident Alice Mazanec, 91, of Lexington Square in Lombard and formerly a 53-year resident of Riverside, died on Feb. 27, 2019.

Ms. Mazanec was a former employee at Berwyn National Bank and a bookkeeper for the California Manufacturing Co. in Chicago. She was an avid traveler, bowler, pinochle player, Cubs fan and did beautiful counted cross-stitching.

She was the wife of the late Frank A. Mazanec; the sister of the late Ruth Bloom; the aunt of Cathy (Paul) Skrip, Cyndy Jirsa, David (Susan) Bloom, Jeff Bloom, Kent (Tona) Mortensen and Nancy (Fred) Volgamore.

Mr. Pacholski was born Nov. 10, 1933. He worked as a laboratory technician for an

industrial firm, and was an avid reader with a special interest in military history.

He volunteered at St. Louise de Marillac Church, Marriage Ministries, LaGrange Hospital and the LaGrange Park Library for many years. Mr. Pacholski was the first elected president of the Friends of the La Grange Park Library. He was also a charter member of the La Grange Council Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Pacholski was the husband of Patricia Pacholski (nee Slack); the brother of Stanley (Audrey) Pacholski, Robert (Vicki) Pacholski, Gerald (Karen) Pacholski and the late Aloysius (the late Jean) Pacholski; the brother-in-law of Saundra LaLonde and the late John (Jacqueline) Blank; the uncle of many nieces and nephews; a cherished friend of many; and a godfather of many.

Nazareth nets third in 3A girls hoops Stritzel scores 30 in her final game as Roadrunners finish 32-4 on season

The typically high-scoring Roadrunners struggled offensively, making just 19 of 52 shots (32 percent) for the game. Morton also owned the glass, outrebounding Nazareth 38-23. Using their size advantage, the Potters also outscored the Roadrunners 34-22 in the paint.

“Morton is a very good team, which we knew going in,” Stritzel said. “We started off strong, but as the game progressed their size caused us some problems. Their defense converged on me which made it difficult for me to drive the ball to the basket.”

Butler University recruit Tenley Dowell (game-highs with 23 points, 8 rebounds) led Morton. Teammates Lindsey Dullard and Katie Krupa also scored in double figures with 17 points apiece.

While replacing a player like Stritzel is impossible, plus the loss of fellow seniors like Martinucci and Cullotta, the Roadrunners should be very competitive next season. Several key players return next season, notably Evans, Franchesca Metz and Caroline Workman.

Regardless of the Roadrunners’ future, the players will cherish the memories of the past two seasons during which Nazareth posted a 63-7 record.

“The bonds created between the players this season will never be broken,” Metz said. “The way we played together on the court is something I’ll never forget. When I think about the last two seasons, I am going to think about the girls I had the opportunity to play with. We have so many memories together on and off the court like our bus rides and afternoons spent in the locker room.”

he Nazareth Academy girls basketball team talked openly about wanting to win the Class 3A state championship this season. After a second-place showing at state last year (losing to Peoria Richwoods in the final), the Roadrunners’ goal this season seemed reasonable with most of the team’s top players back in the lineup.

Unfortunately, the team’s dream was halted by perennial downstate powerhouse Morton 65-51 in the IHSA state semifinals on March 1 in Normal.

Morton, which already had won three straight 3A state championships between 2015 and 2017, added a fourth state title by beating Glenbard South 35-21in the championship game over the weekend.

The Roadrunners bounced back from their disappointing loss in the semifinals to beat Sacred Heart-Griffin 61-54 in the thirdplace game on Saturday.

“The season didn’t end how we wanted but I’m proud of each person on our team,” senior Annie Stritzel said. “It was great to end the season with a win and finish everyJOVANNA MARTINUCCI thing off on a positive note. Turning Nazareth senior Nazareth into a state power has been such a rewarding experience.”

Junior Kaylen Evans added: “We got caught up in foul trouble [against Morton].

We pulled ourselves together in the thirdplace game Saturday by just going out there and having fun.”

Stritzel, an all-state player and the greatest player ever at Nazareth, expressed gratitude towards the Roadrunners’ coaching staff.

“Playing for my dad [Nazareth coach Ed Stritzel] and the rest of the staff was truly the most amazing experience,” she said. “I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for the whole staff.”

Martinucci and Evans made consecutive 3-pointers early to give the Roadrunners 6-0 lead and never looked back against the Cyclones. Up 31-24 at halftime, Nazareth went on an 11-2 run, extending their lead to 42-26 midway through the third quarter.

The Cyclones rallied, however, pulling within four points at 51-47 with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter on a jumper by Emily Brenneisen.

to secure the victory for Nazareth.

In the semifinals against Morton, the Roadrunners started well in the first quarter, establishing an 11-4 lead.

However, the Potters quickly responded by outscoring the Roadrunners 19-7 in the second quarter and 19-12 in the third. Trailing Morton 42-30 after three quarters, Nazareth essentially traded baskets the rest of the way en route to a 65-51 loss.

RBHS rallies to win 4A regional

Down 12 at half, Bulldogs surge to rally past Lincoln Park

With scoring at a premium in the state playoffs, the Riverside-Brookfield High School boys basketball team takes comfort in knowing it’s good for at least 50 points before every tip off.

That’s attributable to the team’s balance offensively, with all five starters averaging essentially double figures in scoring.

In fact, RBHS (28-4) has won 15 games in a row highlighted by winning a Class 4A regional title and its 17th conference championship in 18 seasons.

“All year long, I keep going back to the fact that these guys are a group of seniors who have been playing together since fourth/fifth grade,” RBHS coach Mike Reingruber said.

“They have been through a lot of battles together and have played in a bunch of tough games throughout their careers. … Having those experiences definitely help in big games during the state tournament.”

Trailing Lincoln Park by 12 points at halftime in the final of the Morton Regional in Cicero on March 1, the Bulldogs rallied for a 69-60 win. Senior point guard Zach Vaia scored 25 points for RBHS, with Charles Terry (12 points), Patrick Hanley (10 points) and Andrew Veon (10 points) providing support.

“We started off very slow and had foul trouble against Lincoln Park,” said Veon, “but we came out in the second half hungry and more motivated than ever. What propelled us to the victory was our senior leadership.”

In the regional semifinal, RBHS outlasted host Morton 5952 in a seesaw game.

The Bulldogs scored 23 points in the second quarter to set a favorable tone before the Mustangs responded with a strong third quarter to take the lead. Vaia (15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists) and Reggie Loury (12 points, 6 rebounds) made clutch free throws in the fourth quarter for the victors. Terry led the team with a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards, while Veon finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

“Morton played extremely tough. It was a battle the entire game,” Veon said. “We didn’t shoot very well, but guys stepped up when it mattered. We also controlled the glass and played hard defensively to pull off that victory in their gym.”

RBHS faced nationally ranked and No. 1 seed Curie in the Proviso West Sectional on March 5 after the Landmark’s press time. The Condors (31-1) are led by Kansas State recruit DaJuan Gordon, 6-foot-4 forward Ramean Hinton, and guards Trevon Hamilton and Damari Nixon. Curie cruised past regional host Fenwick 76-51 last week.

“These games are the most intense of the year,” Vaia said.

LTHS moves on to 4A Bartlett Sectional Senior-laden Lions winning with great guard play and teamwork

While certain Class 4A sectionals in the IHSA boys basketball state playoffs like Proviso West and Eisenhower understandably attract more attention due to a preponderance of state contenders, the Bartlett Sectional is arguably as competitive as any in the state.

Before the postseason began, Lyons Township High School coach Tom Sloan cited 12 teams in the bracket that could possibly win the sectional. The list of squads still alive has been whittled down to four.

LTHS (23-9), top-seeded Geneva (30-1), No. 7 seed Lake Park and No. 5 Downers Grove North are the remaining contenders for the sectional championship. Although Geneva is the favorite, Lake Park and Downers Grove North both scored notable upsets in regional finals, while the Lions earned impressive wins against Hinsdale South and regional host Glenbard West.

LTHS took on Geneva on March 5 at Bartlett after the Landmark’s press time.

Lake Park and Downers Grove North are scheduled meet in the other sectional semifinal on March 6 at 7 p.m.

LTHS created the chance to upset the Vikings with its aforementioned pair of regional victories.

In the final against Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn, senior guard Tyrese Shines led the Lions with 18 points and eight rebounds. Grant Niego (12 points), Josh Berry (9 points, 3 assists) and Matt Sloyan (8 points, 5 rebounds) also contributed strong efforts.

LTHS led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and extended its advantage to 36-24 at halftime. Although the Lions didn’t shoot particularly well (18-for-52/36.8 percent) they made 13 of 16 free throws, committed only four turnovers and kept their composure on the road.

“Winning the regional title in their gym, especially after winning there two weeks ago, was very difficult to do,” Sloan said. “I am very proud of the effort and teamwork that the team showed.”

In the semifinal, the Lions defeated Hinsdale South 58-44 as Shines (20 points, 8 rebounds) Berry (18 points) and Grant Niego (12 points, 5 rebounds) all scored in double figures. Nolan Niego added seven rebounds, three steals and plenty of hustle.

After establishing a 12-8 advantage after one quarter, the Lions outscored the Hornets 32-20 over the middle quarters en route to victory.
