Lincoln School principal resigns, another non-tendered Robinson principal can come back as a teacher, if he chooses

On March 11 at a Committee of the Whole meeting, a closely divided Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 board voted 4 to 3 to accept a resignation agreement with Lincoln School principal Tara Kristoff and also voted 4 to 3 to not to renew the contract of veteran Robinson School principal Al Molina and to reclassify him as a teacher.

An audience of more than 100 people, many of them teachers in the district along with about 20 parents and students there to support Molina, packed the cafeteria at George Washington Middle School.

Longtime board member Joanne Schaeffer joined regular “no” votes Jorge Torres and Michael Bennett in voting against getting rid of the two principals, who both had difficult relationships with the teachers at their schools.

Bennett added a comment after his vote.

“No, and I think we have to approve an apology,” Bennett said as he voted against approving the resignation agreement with Kristoff.

No serious injuries in crash involving stolen car A silver Honda that was involved in a crash at the intersection on Harlem Avenue and Cermak Road in North Riverside on March 9 at about 9:05 p.m. had been stolen in Chicago on March 3, police have reported.

Nobody was seriously hurt in the crash, which touched off a manhunt northwest of the intersection through commercial and residential properties and the Jewish Waldheim Cemetery. Police were unable to locate either of the two people seen fleeing the scene on foot.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash told police he was westbound on Cermak Road and was traveling through the intersection on a green light when the Honda turned in front of him.

He was able to drive his vehicle, a Volvo, out of traffic, but when he returned to the Honda, its occupants were gone. Two people were last seen fleeing toward Zeigler Ford, northwest of the intersection.

Police set up a perimeter and searched the area with the assistance of neighboring agencies and North Riverside’s K-9 unit, but were unable to locate any suspects.

Cops: DUI driver armed with pistol A 56-year-old North Riverside man charged with drunken driving had a loaded handgun in his pocket at the time he was pulled over by police on March 3 just before 5 p.m.

A motorist waved down a Riverside patrol vehicle to tell the officer that a black Ford Taurus was driving all over the road while southbound on Harlem Avenue near 26th Street.

Police located the vehicle on Harlem Avenue near Longcommon Road, where an officer reported seeing it crossing over into the opposite lane of traffic. After being pulled over by police, the driver initially denied drinking.

Instead, he reportedly said his erratic driving was due to high blood pressure or because he was still suffering from the effects of the cold after participating in the Polar Plunge at North Avenue beach in Chicago earlier in the day.

Police reported that the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. They also recovered a flask containing whiskey in one of his pockets, along with a vaping device with a small amount of cannabis. An open bottle of whiskey was also found inside the car.

Finally, police said the driver had a loaded 9 mm handgun in his front pocket. While the man had a valid concealed carry card, police said it is unlawful to carry a loaded weapon if a person is intoxicated.

Drove over stop sign Riverside police cited a 19-year-old Berwyn man for several traffic offenses after he reportedly drove a black 2012 Hyundai onto the parkway and over a stop sign at the corner of Harlem Avenue and Lindberg Road while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle on March 6 at about 8:30 a.m.

The driver told police he was northbound on Harlem Avenue waiting to turn left onto westbound Lindberg Road. A southbound vehicle was making a left turn onto eastbound 30th Street and the Hyundai began turning left at about the same time.

As he was turning, the driver of the Hyundai saw another southbound vehicle approaching rapidly, so he reportedly accelerated quickly, drove over the curb and struck the stop sign before entering Lindberg Road.

Both driver’s side tires were flattened by the impact with the curb.

The driver called a tow truck, but a police officer noticed the unoccupied, disabled vehicle parked in the 400 block of Kent Road.

A trail of engine fluid led the officer to the downed stop sign at Harlem and Lindberg.

A tow truck driver who arrived on the scene was able to identify the driver of the Hyundai for police. Police ticketed him for improper lane usage, damage to public property, failure to notify police of an accident and no proof of insurance.

Light bulb smasher The owner of the property in the 4500 block of Park Avenue, Brookfield, contacted police on the morning of March 5 to report that someone had removed two coach lights on the exterior of her garage and smashed the bulbs on the ground.

Out cold Brookfield police charged a 43-year-old Chicago man with driving under in influence of alcohol after finding him asleep inside of his vehicle, which was parked in the 3700 block of Prairie Avenue on March 9 at 1:30 a.m.

According to police, the man admitted to consuming alcohol and appeared visibly intoxicated.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, March 3-10, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Brookfield imposed term limits in 1978 Since 2010, voters in more than a dozen northern Illinois municipalities have voted to impose term limits on their elected officials.

Riverside’s village attorney, Michael Marrs, provided the village board with information on those municipalities, several in Cook County, including Harvey, Hazel Crest, Dolton, Calumet City, Tinley Park, Crestwood, Alsip, Oak Lawn, Franklin Park, Broadview, Country Club Hills and Des Plaines.

But one of the first Cook County municipalities to adopt term limits may well have been Brookfield, which ushered in the practice of limiting its trustees and village president to two consecutive terms in 1978.

When voters went to the polls that year, former village president Philip Hollinger was in federal prison after being convicted of extortion and

tax evasion related to kickbacks he received from a tree-trimming company.

Hollinger, whose nickname was “L’il Napoleon,” was first elected president in 1961 and was in the midst of his fourth term as president in 1976 when he was convicted after a seven-day trial in U.S. District Court.

A former Brookfield village manager, who testified against Hollinger at the trial, had previously pleaded guilty to tax fraud, according to a Chicago Tribune story from the time.

In 1988, Brookfield voters got a chance to rescind that decision when a new referendum asked voters to eliminate term limits. However, residents voted to keep term limits intact.

If you live in suburban Chicago and you’re chomping at the bit to cast your ballot for local municipal, library board and school board races up for election on April 2, you can cast an early ballot at any one of more than 50 locations in the two weeks prior to Election Day. Early voting sites in the Cook County suburbs – including one in the council chambers of the Brookfield Village Hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave. – will be open daily between March 18 and April 1.

The village hall will be open to voters Monday through Friday March 18-22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 25-29 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; on Saturday, March 23 and March 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Sunday, March 24 and March 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Monday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All early voting is conducted on touch screens, which store every ballot version in the county and allows suburban Cook County voters to cast early ballots at any suburban early voting location.

Registered voters do not need to provide an excuse for voting early, nor do they have to provide an ID, though the clerk’s office notes a government-issued ID is helpful if there are questions about a voter’s registration, address or signature.

With respect to frustration about the village board’s performance, Sells said, “If you’re frustrated with us up here, run for office.”

There are three trustee seats up for election on April 2. There are three candidates in the race.

If the term-limit resolution passes on April 18, the newly seated village board could opt to take no action – which would result in a referendum being placed on the March 2020 ballot – or that board could vote to overturn the resolution and kill the referendum effort.

Downtown Riverside projects kicking off soon Commuter parking lot redo could start in the next week or so

Despite the miserable cold of late, Riverside residents can expect the spring construction season to commence in the next week or so at the main commuter parking lot just west of the downtown train station.

Put off last fall, work will soon start on the construction of a permeable paver parking lot, which is being funded in part by a grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

Riverside’s portion of the cost will also be lower than expected after bids for the work came in significantly below the estimated $900,000 budget. MWRD awarded the job to Chicagoland Paving Contractors Inc., which submitted the low bid of $739,900.

MWRD has promised $560,000 toward the work to replace the existing asphalt with permeable pavers that will help divert storm water runoff from the village’s sewer system.

Officials estimate that the lot’s drainage system should be able to detain about 224,000 gallons of water, slowly releasing it into the ground instead of the water being directed to local sewers.

Immediately east of the 37,000-square-foot

parking lot will be a roughly 6,600-square-foot rain garden planted with native species that will also help contain storm water runoff.

The paving project includes the main portion of the commuter parking lot. Metered parking spaces that extend west behind Riverside Swim Club will remain paved with asphalt.

Both the main lot and the extension, however, will be offline during construction, said Public Works Director Edward Bailey. The tentative completion date is May 17, but that could be affected by weather.

During construction, the 75 commuter lot permit holders will be using the parking lot at the Riverside Swim Club, next door to the west. While the club is not charging the village for use of the lot, the village has agreed to restripe and number the parking spaces there, said Riverside Finance Director Karin Johns.

As for the metered spaces in the commuter lot extension, Johns said the village will provide 42 temporary metered spots on Bloomingbank, Burling, and Riverside roads.

“I am currently developing a map to outline this, which will be distributed via the website, e-flash and being placed on cars in the metered spots on the days leading up to construction,” Johns said in an email.

Metra pedestrian access project coming Another major project in the train station area will also be getting started this spring and could overlap somewhat with the commuter parking lot project.

Also a holdover from last year, the pedestrian safety improvements slated for Bloomingbank and Riverside roads near Metra’s south train station platform will begin “as soon as possible,” said Riverside Community Development Director Sonya Abt. The $669,000 project is being funded in part by a federal Surface Transportation Program grant of $468,355. The village’s share of about $200,000 will be paid using its motor fuel tax revenues.

Since the federal grant funds are being administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation, that agency was in charge of the bid process. The company awarded the contract for the work to Coal City-based D Construction Inc. Abt did not have a firm start date for the project as of last week, saying she was waiting on IDOT to complete paperwork related to the job.

“We want to get started as soon as pos-

sible, because we want to be substantially complete by the Fourth of July,” Abt said.

Work will include extending the curb line along the west side of Riverside Road from the tracks farther south to shorten the crosswalk and prevent cars from stopping on the tracks to wait for pedestrians to clear the existing long crosswalk.

Extending the curbing will also create a brick paver plaza area east of the train station, which will sport raised planting beds.

The plaza will taper to the west into a raised sidewalk along the north side of Bloomingbank Road in front of the train station, separating vehicles from pedestrians near the train station entrance.

The streetscape on the east side of Riverside Road from the tracks to East Quincy Street will be redone to match the streetscape north of the tracks on Longcommon Road.

Pedestrian access to the train platform should be uninterrupted during construction, said Abt, but westbound vehicular traffic on Bloomingbank Road at some point is likely to be shifted to Burling Road for a time.

“The idea is to keep [Bloomingbank Road] open as much as possible,” Abt said.

Brookfield Library plan public hearing this month

Planning and Zoning Commission to review application on March 28

Plans for a new public library building in Brookfield were submitted to the village for review last month and will be considered by the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission at the commission’s March 28 meeting.

At a special meeting on Feb. 18 library trustees approved the final details of the plan for an approximately 21,000-square-foot, two-story building to be built at 3541 Park Ave., across Lincoln Avenue from the existing library.

The application for a planned unit development permit was submitted to the village on Feb. 27.

“We feel great about the application that we submitted, and we look forward to the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on the 28th,” said Brookfield Public Library Director Kimberly Coughran.

The plan must ultimately be approved by the village board. If all goes well construction could start in the spring of next year, Coughran said.

The Foundation for the Brookfield Public Library is now 86.57 percent of the way towards its goal of raising $1,355,000 for the new building. In addition, the library expects to borrow a little over $3 million from the First National Bank of the Brookfield.

“We are exceptionally grateful for our supporters,” Coughran said.

The gift will be made over a period of years.

The foundation is offering naming rights in exchange for large contributions. The donation from Hitzeman Funeral Home will result in the new library’s lobby being named in honor of the Hitzeman family.

Chuck Hitzeman has fond memories of going to the Brookfield Public Library as an adolescent with former funeral home employee Cliff Eckart, a retired postal worker, who taught young Chuck about investing in the stock market.

“He’d bring me to the library and show me all the different periodicals and publications where you could get all the stock data and all the current information about the companies and how to research them,” Hitzeman said.

Hitzeman said that having a strong library is vital to Brookfield.

“It’s giving back to the community,” Hitzeman said of his gift. “Every viable and strong community has a strong library.”

Steve and Susan Berthel, who owned Berthel Lewis Electric until shutting down the business in 2016, recently donated $20,000 to the library’s capital campaign. A six-person meeting room and the Children’s Activity Area will be named after the Berthels in appreciation of their gift.

Sue Berthel said she has used the library a lot in the 31 years that she and Steve have lived in Brookfield.

“We’re doing this because we think that Brookfield needs the library expansion,” Sue Berthel said. “Brookfield uses the library a lot and we need a lot more room. And I support Kim, who’s worked very hard.”

Earlier the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank of Brookfield teamed up for a $50,000 gift in exchange for the naming rights of the 110-person meeting room in the new library.

Additional naming opportunities are still available. In exchange for a $25,000 your or your business’ name can be memorialized on the wall of the children’s classroom, the

makerspace, the outdoor plaza or the quiet reading room in the new library.

For $10,000 you can name the café area, the library director’s office, or the teen space.

Gifts of $5,000 will get you the right to name a four-person or two-person meeting room, staff work offices, audiovisual support for the children’s area, or collaborative technology for study rooms.

A $2,500 gift will get you a plaque on an outside bench, naming rights to service kiosks or the public access computers and laptops. All naming decisions must be approved by the library board.

Donations can be made to the Foundation for the Brookfield Public Library and are tax deductible. Library and foundation officials have begun hosting micro events, such as an Oscars party at the home of the foundation’s president, Jo Ann Day, last month, to reach out to potential donors. The library has been courting large donors for the past year. Later the library will offer a program where small donors can purchase brick pavers outside the new library.

At its Feb. 27 meeting, the library board extended its contract with its fundraising consultant for four more months but reduced the monthly fee it is paying to HUB Philanthropic Solutions to $4,000 a month from the previous $6,500 a month as the major gift solicitation component of the capital campaign begins to wind down.

At the same meeting library trustees voted unanimously to give Coughran a 4-percent pay raise, increasing her annual salary to $105,900.

“She has an excellent relationship with her staff and very progressive programs,” said library board president Linda Kampschroeder. “We’re on the cutting edge of technology.”

Coughran has played a key role in the fundraising campaign and in developing plans for the new library.

“She’s done so much above and beyond your usual library director,” Kampschroeder said.

AG sides with Brookfield trustee candidate seeking documents Brookfield improperly shielded list of manager’s goals, Public Access Bureau rules

The Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Bureau has sided with a Brookfield trustee candidate whose Freedom of Information request seeking information about the village manager’s employment goals was denied by village hall as being exempt from disclosure.

Laura S. Harter, the deputy bureau chief of the attorney general’s Public Access Bureau, on March 5 requested that the village disclose that information to Mark Rogers, one of three candidates on the Brookfield Community Party slate, which is challenging the PEP Party’s slate in the April 2 election.

In January, Rogers had submitted a Freedom of Information request seeking “proposed employment goals and objectives of the village manager that would form the basis of his employment performance evaluation.”

At the village board’s March 11 meeting, President Kit Ketchmark disclosed the information in a prepared statement that also defended the village’s initial decision.

“We did not feel it was in the best interest of the village to immediately politicize the

Schaeffer declined to comment about her votes immediately after the meeting, saying that she had to attend to a medical emergency in her family.

Voting to terminate the two principals were board members Sharon Anderson, Shannon Johnson, Tom Weiner and board President Marge Hubacek.

Kristoff has been on paid administrative leave since Feb. 14 after being accused of insubordination. She is the third Lincoln School principal to resign in three years.

Kristoff ’s resignation is effective immediately.

Rogers’ FOIA request referred to a section in the employment contract of Village Manager Tim Wiberg that states within 30 days of the execution of the contract, the village board will set specific goals for him. If those goals are reached during the first nine months of Wiberg’s tenure as village manager, he will receive a raise in his base pay of $10,000.

The village board hired Wiberg as village manager in September 2018 at a base salary of $165,000. If Wiberg attains goals set for him by the village board by July 1, his salary will increase.

The village denied Rogers’ request for the stated goals and objectives, claiming they were exempt from examination according to the Personnel Records Review Act. Rogers appealed that decision to the Public Access Bureau in February.

“The $10,000 bump is forever,” Rogers told the Landmark. “So although it looks like ‘achieve the goals and receive $10,000’ it’s a permanent addition to the base salary. … So

the goals could cost significantly more than $10,000. If there’s nothing to hide, then they should provide the document.”

In her recommendation that the village turn over the records to Rogers, Harter stated that the village’s determination that the goals and objectives were protected was faulty.

“This office … determines that the village manager’s list of goals, by itself, is not a performance evaluation,” Harter wrote. “This record primarily reflects a set of tasks to be completed without regard to how they are completed. … It does not evaluate him in any manner.”

Harter’s recommendation that the village disclose the village manager’s set of goals and objectives, however, was not binding and the village could have delayed its response or forced Rogers to sue them for it.

Instead, the village chose to make the information public, with Ketchmark reading the eight goals and objectives set for Wiberg last October. Wiberg handed a document listing those goals to the Landmark at the meeting.

The goals are: ■ Review and provide recommendations to the village board concerning staffing levels

and general organizational structure.

■ Complete a manpower benchmarking study to compare Brookfield’s organization structure to other similar municipalities.

■ Revamp the village board meeting packet process to create more user-friendly and informative packets for the village board and the public’s use.

■ Oversee the creation and subsequent adoption of the Fiscal Year 2019 budget, focusing on incorporating more strategic planning elements. The goal is to provide the public with a better understanding of the village’s fiscal condition and fiscal issues.

■ Provide recommendations to the village board on how to incorporate audio/visual capabilities in the council chambers.

■ Hire a new public works director and orientate the successful candidate into village operations.

■ Subject to board approval, oversee the village’s administration of new development projects including the bowling alley site and Congress Station.

■ Develop an implementation plan for the recently approved comprehensive plan.

Four current or former Robinson School parents spoke in favor of Molina during the public comment portion of the meeting while about 20 parents and students stood in support of Molina. One former Robinson parent who spoke was critical of Molina.

Molina taught in the district for six years before becoming the principal at Robinson 14 years ago. As a result, Molina has tenure and has the right to return to the district next year as a teacher if he so chooses, although he will likely seek a principal’s job elsewhere.

“We’ll find a place for him,” Hubacek said.

“He’ll have to decide what’s best for him and his family.”

Johnson said that her vote to not renew Molina’s contract as principal was based on his treatment of his staff at Robinson.

“There was never any concern about student safety,” Johnson said. “It had to do with the treatment of students and staff.”

Jackman said that she was happy with the board’s actions.

“Teachers were listened to,” Jackman said. “It’s a nice thing to happen.”

Eyes open

W

e’re not sure what was so top secret about the Brookfield Village Board’s list of goals and objectives for their newly hired village manager that the board went to the trouble and expense of trying to keep them under wraps before releasing the information on March 11.

Looking at the eight goals listed in a “confidential” memo from Village Manager Tim Wiberg to the village board dated last October, all we can think of is that residents might have been surprised to learn that achieving that list would result in a permanent $10,000 addition to the manager’s salary.

Don’t get us wrong, the list is a perfectly reasonable enumeration of what a village manager ought to be doing.

These are objectives the village manager should indeed be pursuing, and we have no doubt Wiberg will hit those benchmarks. He’s hit many already, which is great.

Whether they merit a permanent 6 percent salary boost could be argued, but that was the deal negotiated by the village board last September.

That the village board didn’t trumpet the list of goals last October when they were agreed to probably isn’t a huge surprise. It’s the kind of pro forma thing that often gets short public shrift. When clauses like that are written into contracts, our expectation is that they are sort of selffulfilling prophecies.

The head-scratcher remains why keep that info from the public after the info had been FOIA’d?

Village President Kit Ketchmark on March 11 said the board didn’t want to politicize the hiring of the manager, his goals or his eventual evaluation on those goals.

But that’s sort of naïve considering that the whole endeavor is a political one and that the hire and goal setting was being done just as candidates were lining up to run for office this spring.

In any case, the political fallout – if indeed there’s any to see at all – would have been far less of a bother back in October than it’s likely to be now, less than a month before the election.

Somehow, the village still argues it was in the right to deny the record citing some sort of privacy laws related to personnel evaluation, but we find it hard to argue against the ruling of the Illinois Attorney General’s public access counselor that a mere list of goals and objectives sheds any light on an evaluation that won’t take place for another four months.

Of course, now that the goals and objectives are out there, the public will be able to judge for itself whether those goals have been accomplished and the village ought to make sure that it can clearly document achievement of those goals.

That’s not invading the privacy of the manager. It’s holding him and the village board to account, as they should be, for the manager’s performance on behalf of taxpayers. This isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good thing.

Good on the person who submitted the FOIA request, Mark Rogers, currently a candidate for the village board, for being persistent.

didn’t make it to walk the red carpet at the Oscars, but I did make it by Uber to the Landmark Theater for the screening of the documentary “Hesburgh” directed by Patrick Creadon and produced by his wife, Christine O’Malley, and friend, Jerry Barca.

Creadon, born and raised in Riverside, is an award winning director and cinematographer, whose works include “Word Play” and “Catholics and Converts.” His latest work, “Hesburgh,” tells the story of the renowned Father Theodore Hesburgh of the University of Notre Dame.

The film tells the story of Hesburgh’s place in history, not only as an educator at the famed university but as a man whose efforts helped the civil rights movement and who was as an adviser to presidents. It is also the story of the Hesburgh’s personal life and his many public contributions.

Attending the screening as the guest of Creadon’s aunts, Kathleen Sullivan and Mary Ellen O’Donnell, I immediately knew I was among a family who knew far more about Notre Dame than I ever will, so I was there to learn.

The film kept me mesmerized as I found out that here

was a man who gave his life not only to his faith, but to all mankind. His love of family remained a strong influence in his life.

Aside from the story, I was impressed by Creadon’s editing. I can only imagine there must have been miles of film that wound up on the cutting room floor before getting to the finished project. It is obvious that “Hesburgh” as well as Creadon’s other film are labors of love, which one can tell from the subjects he chooses.

“Hesburgh” has already garnered awards at the Heartland International Film Festival in Indiana.

Creadon originally felt the film would have a limited distribution, but as they rethought their distribution efforts with the help of marketing and distribution companies, the film is scheduled to be in theaters with a national release on April 26. Plans are for it to be shown around the world and translated into five languages.

I give the film 5 stars for its technical aspects and concise storytelling. It’s a good see for all ages and not just Notre Dame fans. I’ll let you know where it will be shown locally when I find out. In the meantime have a big bag of popcorn ready as you will enjoy the show.

RBHS volunteers pack kits for homeless vets Riverside-Brookfield High School sponsored a service day on Friday, Feb. 15 wherein student and staff volunteers packed essential daily need items for our homeless veterans in the area. Our student volunteers came in on their day off and packed 771 full kits.

We’d like to thank the volunteers from the PTO, boys lacrosse team, girls lacrosse team, and girls soccer team.

They worked very hard and packed all of the 771 essential needed kits with 15-25 items in less than 2 hours. What a great team effort!

Students in the Helping Paws Club and members of the girls soccer team set up for the event on Feb. 14 after school, and on Friday, 30 more students woke up early on their day off to

help fill the kits.

The event included Tom Day in his full military uniform playing “Taps” and speaking to RBHS students about the history of taps. Guardian Corps of America President Anthony E. La Piana also spoke about the purpose of the organization and the kits assembled.

This is part of a larger operation that Guardian Corps of America is engaging in called “Operation EDDA”.

cars. Maple Avenue is loaded with cars on Sundays between Eight Corners and the Burlington Railroad.

The lots around Eight Corners are also fairly small parcels. You need a real comprehensive plan to assemble these smaller parcels into larger parcels, which will most likely require the acquisition of adjacent residential homes. Who will want to give up their homes?

The types of uses that could only survive are your neighborhood uses that serve the immediate area. How about a neighborhood bakery at Eight Corners?

I would love to be able to walk to neighborhood businesses.

The one way that the village may also be able to implement something that would work for this unique area is an overlay district. With an overlay district, the zoning of the properties would remain the same, but would allow for increased flexibility in zoning since it would tailor needed requirements

to areas within the community which share certain characteristics. It could also prohibit certain uses from locating there, like payday loan establishments, pawn shops and video gaming parlors.

Eight Corners needs to be branded with its own unique identity and not look like every other suburban commercial district. Brookfield has a revitalized Grand Boulevard that is really becoming a destination for outside visitors with ample parking up and down the street.

Ogden Avenue will eventually get there as well, once the many small parcels are assembled and outdated commercial buildings are leveled for new development. Leave Eight Corners for the residents of Brookfield.

The village has a lot of flexibility to work with and if they put the right plans forward, I think the entire community will stand behind them.

Two visions for Eight Corners Five years from now I can imagine our Eight Corners two different ways.

One vision is a smattering of individual, independent, mixture of small businesses and services amongst underutilized or closed store fronts with the village still wrestling with what to allow to come into the area.

Another vision is a unified, modern, architecturally impressive, developed two additional corners at Eight Corners

with small businesses and service providers vying for the other few properties still available.

Let’s get behind a proposal that reflects compromise and keeps us from postponing development. I don’t know what kind of tax base money the proposed multipurpose project will bring. I am sure there are fantasies of development for a strong tax base income kind of development. But that has not surfaced or shown

y name is Deanna Zalas and I am asking for your support of my candidacy for District 208 school board. District 208 and RBHS have a strong tradition of excellence and I am looking forward to contributing to both their continued success and continuous improvement.

As a member of the District 208 board, I would support a strategic planning effort to address operational and capital priorities and allow for an informed discussion between students, parents, residents, educators and other stakeholders. Residents of Brookfield and Riverside should be proud of the school in our community, and actively engaged in making decisions around its future success.

With a 20-plus year career in the public sector, I understand the need to balance competing priorities using limited resources. I graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1994 and have a master’s degree from University of Illinois-Springfield.

I have worked in a number of compliance, operations and human resource positions and am currently employed as the director of risk management for Cook County government.

In this position I manage employee benefits, workers compensation and insurance matters, prepare budgets including the self-insurance budget for all of Cook County, and assist with labor negotiations and the implementation of various strategic initiatives.

My background and experience in effectively managing public resources and promoting sound public policy will allow me to quickly become an asset to the District 208 board.

My husband, Michael Marrs, and I have lived in Riverside for the last 13 years. Before that we lived in Chicago and Berwyn but chose to make District 208 our home. I have served on the Riverside Little League Board, the Riverside Economic Development Commission and have volunteered regularly across classrooms and in our community.

Our three sons are attending or will attend RBHS, and I firmly believe that varied opportunities to engage in service to these communities as well as participate in music, arts and athletics are as important as the academic skills they need to succeed in this rapidly changing world.

With your support, I look forward to being part of a board that prioritizes the hiring of strong educators, dedicated administrators and qualified support staff in support of the shared goal of allowing all students to fulfill their potential.

Right call on Eight Corners uses Kudos to the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission for their recommendation on commercial uses at Eight Corners. While it seems that welcoming large amounts of people to Eight Corners is a good idea for both the community and its tax base, you have to look at what it would do to the vehicular traffic circulation around Eight Corners. People neglect to stop their cars at the stop signs at Eight Corners and with people being in such a rush, you’re waiting for an accident to happen.

I believe the key criteria that needs to be considered in the Eight Corners area is minimum lot size for certain uses. An example of a use given in the article was a movie theater. Given the way most movie theaters are developed, bigger is better.

The only type of movie theater that would be able to operate is a one-room theater that holds no more than 20 people. Where would all of the cars park?

M

y name is Bill Durkin and I am a candidate for RBHS 208 board. First, it is important to note that there are six qualified candidates running to be elected to the four open seats on April 2. I commend them all for their willingness to serve.

My wife, Erin Flanagan Durkin, and I have lived in Riverside for nearly 20 years. We are proud parents of Jack, Molly and Joey. Molly is a junior at RBHS and I have three nieces there as well. I need to mention, as well, I am proud of my wife in so many ways – one of which is her occupation as a school teacher.

I deeply respect the role and influence that teachers serve in the development of our children.

Public service and improving the communities we live and work in has been in my family for generations.

My grandfather, Patrick Durkin, emigrated from Ireland at the age of 15 and eventually served in the Navy during World War I. He and his wife, Mary, stressed education to their three children despite neither having more than a fourth-grade education themselves.

My parents, Tom and Colette, raised our family of eight boys in Westchester. My father served in the Army during the Korean War. He and my mother worked tirelessly to make sure that all eight of their boys had college degrees.

In 2018, my parents were honored by the village of Westchester for their lifetime service to the community and beyond. In addition, several of my brothers have, or are currently, serving in prosecutorial, judicial and legislative roles. To our family, it’s an honor and privilege to serve the many communities we live in.

For almost 30 years, I have been in the insurance industry. I currently serve on my firm’s executive and budget committees and am one of three partners charged with overseeing operations for our 190 person privately owned firm.

Every day in my role as an executive I negotiate, compromise, listen to needs and seek solutions. I am part of a group that works on creating a balanced budget and to live within our firms means.

My role with my clients is to provide the best possible protection and broad-based offerings at a sustainable affordable cost. Advocacy for the good of my clients’ best interests is something I have always worked hard for.

When elected to the RBHS 208 board my role will be as an advocate for the students, families, taxpayers, teachers and staff in providing the best educational experience at a sustainable financial level.

As your elected member of the RBHS 208 board, I will be an approachable and objective listener to all stakeholders. On April 2, I sincerely ask for your support and vote.

Single-sex troops from page 1 new policy of allowing girls to join its flagship program for the first time.

The historic change for the organization began in late 2017, when Boy Scouts of America announced it was allowing girls to join its Cub Scouts program (for children in grades K-5) before totally enacting membership for girls in Scouts BSA (for children 11-17).

However, it is up to the discretion of individually chartered troops to decide whether they would like to open their troops up to girl membership.

For an organization which saw membership drop by nearly a third since 2000, the change has been perceived as an effort to both bring in new children and families into the program as well as promote the organization as a viable 21st century outlet for strong youth development for both boys and girls.

Now, as visitors head to the homepage of Scouts BSA’s website, the new initiative is front and center — showcasing a new slogan, “Scout me in,” along with photos and videos of both boys and girls participating in scouting including rock climbing, canoeing and camping.

Girls hoops stars align on court Stritzel chosen as Player of the Year; RBHS nets 3 All-Stars

or all of Annie Stritzel’s individual accomplishments, the best attributes regarding the Nazareth Academy senior star are she’s a winner and she makes teammates better.

Stritzel, a Harvard recruit, capped off her remarkable high school career by leading Nazareth to a thirdplace finish in the Class 3A state playoffs this year. The team finished second in 2018. Over the past two seasons, the Stritzel-led Roadrunners won 63 of 70 games while quickly establishing the program as a state power.

In her last game, Stritzel scored a game-high 30 points and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to power Nazareth past Sacred Heart-Griffin 61-54 in the third-place game of the state tournament.

“Annie is going to go down as one of the all-time winners,” said Nazareth coach Ed Stritzel, also Annie’s dad. “She’s been downstate three times now in her career. She just wins games and I wouldn’t trade her for anybody. I think we’ve got the best all-around player in Illinois on our team.”

Teammate Jovanna Martinucci added: “Playing with Annie is really great. Once you get her the ball, she opens up so much for everyone else and it’s really exciting.”

Strtizel, the Landmark Player of the Year in girls basketball headlines the first team. Martinucci, a heady senior point guard known for her leadership, joins Stritzel as a first-teamer, along with standout players Brenna Loftus (Riverside-Brookfield), Lily Courier (Lyons Township) and Kaylen Evans (Nazareth).

Loftus, a high-scoring sophomore forward, led the Bulldogs to 20 wins and a Metro Suburban Conference championship. She also earned MVP honors in conference.

The selfless Loftus prefers to talk about her team.

“I’m so proud of all the girls for being able to pull out a conference title,” Loftus said. “The thing I’ll remember most about this season is how much fun we had together as a team.

“I’m extremely excited about what’s in store for us next season,” she added. “I think we have a lot of potential to keep playing well. We have some promising years ahead of us.”

Courier is the Lions’ best all-around player, while Evans bolstered the Nazareth lineup this season after transferring from Marian Central Catholic.

RBHS players Sarah JnoBaptiste and Mary Maloney lead the second team, along with Fenwick freshman Elise Heneghan, LTHS guard Elli Kasonovich and Trinity forward Makiyah Williams.

JnoBaptiste is a versatile player who can score, rebound and defend, while Maloney directed the RBHS offense efficiently with an excellent assists-to-turnovers ratio.

“Williams is a fantastic player,” Oak Park and River Forest coach J.P. Coughlin said. “She can do everything. And she’s only a sophomore which is scary.”

Five Riverside-Brookfield High School boys basketball players (out of 11 overall) made the Landmark All-Stars team this year.

No player is more deserving than RBHS point guard Zach Vaia.

The two-time Metro Suburban Conference MVP averaged 15 points, five assists and four rebounds this season in leading the Bulldogs to a 28-5 record, highlighted

by Thanksgiving, conference and regional championships. A steady floor general, Vaia also guided the Bulldogs to a school record for most wins in a regular season with 26.

“Zach has been an instrumental player in our program the past few years,” RBHS Mike Reingruber said. “When you have a three-year starter at point guard, it makes you sleep easier as a coach, knowing he is an extension of you on the court.”

“As a kid you always picture yourself in

those last-second moments,” Vaia said. “I just love those types of games. That’s when

the game of basketball is so much fun.

Whether it’s to shoot the ball or find the open person, I want the ball in my hands in those situations. I feel very confident in my ability to make something happen.”

Vaia’s leadership and talent should translate well to college basketball if he chooses to continue his athletic career.

“Zach is one of the top small-college point guard prospects in the area,” Reingruber said. “He has a ton of interest from Division III and NAIA schools, and I know he is in the process of narrowing down his list. I think Zach would be a tremendous college basketball player.”

Although Vaia was clearly the best player in the Metro Suburban Conference, RBHS won with balance at both ends of the floor this season.

Consequently, the Bulldogs’ best big man, Andrew Veon (13.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg), and sharpshooter, Patrick Hanley (13.2 ppg), join Vaia as first-team All-Stars. Sophomore Bryce Hopkins and senior guard Solomon Oraegbu (17 ppg) from Fenwick and guard Nolan Niego (14.1 ppg, 4.1 apg) from LTHS are the other picks.

The 6-5 Hopkins (22 ppg, 6.5 rpg) is a big-time Division I prospect who earned All-Chicago Catholic League honors and first-team recognition at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. Hopkins already has scholarship offers from Nebraska, Miami (Ohio) and Loyola Chicago, with growing interest from Big 10 schools like Ohio State and Northwestern.

Considering Fenwick started freshmen guards Trey Pettigrew and Kaden Cobb along with Hopkins, the future is bright for the Friars who won 18 games this season.

“We are a young team, but I believe in our guys,” Hopkins said. “I know what we can do and we are not backing down from any challenge.”

The second team is guard-oriented with Josh Berry and Tyrese Shines (LTHS seniors who each averaged 12 points) and Reggie Loury (RBHS) leading the way. Nazareth sophomore guard Tagen Pearson, the son of former Nazareth star/Kansas University product Sean Pearson, and versatile swingman Charles Terry (8.8 ppg, 6 rpg) from RBHS were also selected.
