It looks as if the auditorium at Blythe Park School in Riverside will be transformed into two classroom spaces in 2023.

Last week, the Riverside Elementary School District 96 Board of Education reviewed a conceptual plan to divide the elementary school’s lower level auditorium into two rooms, divided by some type of movable wall.

One room would be used as an art classroom while the other would be used for music classes. The revamped space would also include some sort of performance space in the music room, although the stage in the See BLYTHE PARK on page 12

Brookfield church buys St. Hugh property in Lyons

St. Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church closed deal earlier in March

St. Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church, 4301 Prairie Ave. in Brookfield, which last summer confirmed interest in buying the St. Barbara Church campus, has closed on the purchase of the shuttered former St. Hugh Parish in Lyons.

The exact sale price was not immediately available, but the Rev. Tom May, pastor of St. Paul VI Parish in Riverside which had been maintaining the Lyons property, said it was around $800,000. The property sale closed on March 10, according to May. The Archdiocese of Chicago had listed the roughly 2.5-acre property comprising a church/school, school annex, gym and rectory for $1.2 million.

“As a community of faith, we’re very happy St. Hugh will continue to be used as a church,” said May. “People in our parish are comforted by that and that it won’t be torn down.”

The Archdiocese of Chicago created St. Paul VI Parish last year by merging three parishes, including St. Hugh, Mater Christi in North Riverside and St. Mary in Riverside.

The St. Mary campus in Riverside became the administrative center for the new parish and St. Mary School in Riverside continues to function as the parish school. Mater Christi Church also continues to serve as a worship site and its long-shuttered former school is now the St. Hugh Faith Formation Center.

St. Hugh’s campus was closed and the property was listed for sale by the archdiocese.

St. Hugh Church The buildings continued to be maintained by St. Paul VI Parish, and May said the sale was in that sense a blessing.

“It wasn’t a cheap prospect,” said May, who added the parish had to pay for repairs after recent rains damaged the rectory’s roof. “It’s a relief not to have to carry the cost of maintaining those buildings.”

St. Paul VI Parish also stands to gain financially from the sale. While the debt St. Hugh owed to the archdiocese when it closed must be paid back, the newly consolidated parish stands to realize as much as $600,000 from the sale, said May. How those funds will be used has not been decided yet, said May, though they could be used to fund an endowment for the parish’s faith formation center as a way to honor the legacy of St. Hugh Parish.

St. Nikola’s purchase of the St. Hugh Parish property puts to rest any thought of the congregation converting the former St. Barbara Parish property in the 4000 block of Prairie Avenue into its new home.

Following the 2019 merger of St. Barbara with St. Louise de Marillac into Holy Guardian Angels Parish, the Archdiocese of Chicago put the former St. Barbara School and convent buildings on the market.

After a tentative deal to sell the school to a developer to convert it into a multifamily residential building fell through, officials from St. Nikola approached the archdiocese about buying the entire St. Barbara campus, including the church and parish hall.

At the time, St. Nikola Church board President Tom Milutinovic called St. Barbara “the future,” giving it a school, parish center and house of worship.

St. Nikola approached the archdiocese after scrapping already approved plans to build a new Byzantine-style church on its property in the 4300 block of Prairie Avenue. The church moved to Brookfield in 2010 from its longtime home in Chicago.

However, according to the Rev. Brian Kean, pastor of Holy Guardian Angels Parish, the archdiocese put a halt to the negotiations on the St. Barbara campus last November after St. Nikola wanted an immediate answer on its offer for it.

“We decided we were not ready to do that,” Kean told the Landmark.

The school and convent remain for sale, though only the convent property is presently listed for sale for $200,000 on the commercial real estate market. It’s not clear how the archdiocese is soliciting offers for the school at this time.

Had the St. Barbara purchase succeeded, St. Nikola church officials had planned to put their Brookfield property – which includes 11 lots in the 4300 blocks of both Prairie and Forest avenues, on the market.

Milutinovic could not be reached for comment for this story. While the St. Nikola property is not yet listed for sale, the St. Hugh property will require significant repairs and updates if the parish wants to operate a school once again.

Brookfield to restart cost share for home flood-control systems Village to set aside $300,000 annually to reimburse homeowners

Brookfield trustees next week are expected to resurrect a cost-sharing program it first initiated in 2013 to help single-family homeowners install flood-protection measures including backflow prevention valves and overhead sewers in their homes.

Elected officials on March 14 indicated support for updating and restarting the flood-prevention program, which will reimburse homeowners 50 percent of the cost (up to certain maximums) for installing the systems.

The 18.5-percent increase in the water rate Brookfield trustees approved last fall will allow the village to set aside $300,000 annually for the program, which will re-

imburse homeowners once systems are installed and inspected.

There are three flood-prevention options residents can choose to install, including overhead sewers, a backflow prevention valve with bypass pump or a backflow prevention valve only.

Backflow prevention valves are the simplest flood-control measures homeowners can choose. The devices simply prevent sewers from backing up into a home with a valve that only allows water to travel away from the home and closes off the system if it senses any backflow. The village will reimburse homeowners who choose that system up to $3,000.

A more expensive variation is a backflow prevention valve with a bypass pump. The valve works in the same way as the less expensive option, but it utilizes a pump to direct any water from the home around the valve and into the sewer system beyond.

Such a system would allow homeowners to use showers and washing machines during heavy rain events, something

homeowners with simple backflow prevention valves might want to avoid. The reimbursement from the village for the valve and bypass pump would be up to $4,000.

Homeowners could also choose to install overhead sewers, which are already mandated for any new home construction in Brookfield, which are the most effective flood-prevention solution and also the most expensive.

Under the cost-share plan, the village would reimburse a homeowner up to $5,000 for installation of overhead sewers.

Public Works Director Carl Muell and Village Manager Timothy Wiberg, however, recommended that elected officials change some of the 2013 requirements for homeowners obtaining project approval to streamline the process.

In the past, homeowners were required to obtain three bids and then submit those to the village, which would choose the lowest bid. Wiberg said he’d like to change that requirement.

“Staff cannot recommend vendors, and

a typical homeowner may not know three contractors to choose from,” Wiberg said.

“We have a pretty good sense of what that [flood-prevention option] should cost, so if a homeowner came to us with an application that had one quote and it was way high, then we’d work with that homeowner and maybe give them a list of contractors that we know of to get that price down.”

Wiberg said the 2013 program resulted in burdening staff with seeking authorizations and notarizing documents, “and it just seemed we could streamline this process.”

The program will be administered by the Brookfield Community and Economic Development Department and there would be no need for any applications to be approved by the board of trustees. Inspections would be carried out by the village’s third-party vendor B&F Construction Code Services Inc. Wiberg said he and Muell are working to put together a pamphlet about the program that the village can post on its website or give to those expressing interest in participating.

Auto theft suspect hit with weapons charge after manhunt in Riverside Lamont J. Dixon reportedly tossed loaded gun during chase

A 21-year-old Chicago man who ran from police seeking to question him about a February auto theft in North Riverside faces a felony weapons charge after being apprehended in a Riverside backyard following what police called a “brief, but intense” manhunt on the afternoon of March 15.

Police apprehended Dixon a short time later hiding in the rear basement stairwell of a house in the 500 block of Uvedale Road. They also reported recovering a silver Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun loaded with 18 rounds in the Selborne Road backyard where a witness reported seeing Dixon throw it.

In addition to the weapons offense, Dixon was charged with resisting arrest.

State fire marshal called in to probe cause of Riverside fire The Riverside Fire Department has called in the Illinois State Fire Marshal and MABAS Division 10 fire investigators to assist in determining the cause of a fire early on March 19 that gutted a single-family home at 170 W. Burlington St. and destroyed the property’s detached rear garage.

Riverside Director of Public Safety Matthew Buckley declined to say whether investigators believed the cause of the fire was suspicious, saying only that it remains under investigation and that evidence collected from the scene was being processed. He declined to say whether or not investigators observed evidence of accelerants at the scene.

The village is also working with the property owner’s insurance company to get the home and garage stabilized to make the property safe. Police tape remained around the property as of March 21.

Buckley said a neighbor initially called 911 at about 3:35 a.m. to report the smell of smoke in the area. When he arrived at the scene, Buckley said he observed there to be a fire in the basement of the single-story brick ranch house as well as in the detached garage.

The homeowner was not present, Buckley

said.

The building was purchased in 2020 by a corporation called Rekrab LLC, whose manager is listed as Anthony Barker, who listed the LLC’s address at the West Burlington Street residence. The LLC was involuntarily dissolved last October, according to the Illinois Secretary of State’s website.

“We’re still speaking with him to determine more facts,” said Buckley.

Firefighters from McCook, Brookfield, North Riverside, Lyons, Forest View and LaGrange Park assisted in fighting the blaze, which was kept contained to the property.

Structures to the east and west of the fire did sustain some minor damage in the form of cracked windows and scorched paint due to heat, Buckley said.

Unlawful use of a weapon A 44-year-old Chicago man faces a felony weapons charge after he was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun without a firearm owner’s ID card or concealed carry license during a traffic stop in the 7200 block of Cermak Road in North Riverside on March 19 at about 6:55 p.m.

A police officer stopped the silver BMW sedan after a computer check of the license plate indicated they should have been displayed on a 2004 Chevy. After being asked if there were any firearms in the vehicle, the driver reportedly told police there was a loaded handgun in the glove box. He also stated the vehicle and the gun belonged to his girlfriend who was not in the vehicle.

Police took the driver into custody and then detained his passenger, a 44-year-old Chicago man, after he was found to have a set of brass knuckles on his person. The driver told police his passenger had no knowledge of the gun and that he had put license plates from an old vehicle on the BMW because he could not afford to register the newer car.

The Cook County State’s Attorney charged the driver with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Police charged the passenger with misdemeanor unlawful use of weapon for possessing the brass knuckles.

Catalytic converter theft A resident of the 8800 block of Brookfield Avenue, Brookfield, called police last week

to report that the catalytic converter had been removed from her 2009 Toyota Prius overnight on March 11-12. The vehicle was parked behind the property, adjacent to the alley.

Tools stolen from truck A man called North Riverside police to report that during the overnight hours on March 13-14 someone had stolen tools and keys from his truck, which was left unlocked. Police informed the man that they had taken someone into custody who might be a suspect, but the victim told police he just wanted his tools back and did not wish to file a criminal complaint.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, March 14-20, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

These cases have not been adjudicated.

Longtime LTHS frosh hoops coach retires Brian Kopecky signs off after 41 years on the sidelines

Retiring Lyons Township High School freshman boys basketball coach Brian Kopecky reflected on 41 seasons with the program often using the same phrase.

“I was the lucky one, really lucky,” Kopecky said. “I was mentored by a lot of guys that knew what they were doing, and all of the guys that I got to coach with. I was the lucky one.”

Colleagues and former players also feel fortunate with the enthusiasm and acquired knowledge of the game Kopecky brought to the sophomore and freshmen levels.

His LTHS coaching legacy will still continue as the boys golf head coach. Kopecky also has coached football (1977-2009) and track and field (1978-2010).

Kopecky was honored before the final LTHS varsity home basketball game Feb. 18. Mark Kropke, who helped to coordinate the ceremony, was Kopecky’s sophomore assistant the past four years and coached football with him.

“There are so many things that make Coach K a great coach and colleague,” Kropke responded. “Coach K’s attention to detail is second to none. His practice plans are designed to utilize every minute and to create competition among the team. He also demands 100 percent effort at all times. His passion for coaching is evident and the athletes play off of his enthusiasm for the sport.”

Kopecky was presented with a framed No. 41 boys basketball jersey, representing his number of seasons with the program.

“One of the coolest things about the jersey is on the tag it says ‘Made in the USA’ so it’s an older one. You don’t find that anymore,” Kopecky said.

The postgame celebration at Salerno’s also was memorable. Kropke said at least 30 former players and coaches stopped by – even opposing coaches. Several attended Kopecky’s final game coaching.

“I always tell our kids, ‘Your dads wish they could be in a locker room,’ because win or lose, it’s special with high school kids,” Kopecky said. “It’s more cool when you win, but there’s life lessons when you lose. That was the beauty about basketball. You could get dusted on Friday and then you’ve got a game on Saturday.”

Kopecky thanked the numerous LT boys basketball coaches along his journey – current head coach Tom Sloan and varsity assistant Jeff Johnson, former varsity head coaches Ron Nikcevich, Dave Ray and Conte Stamas and sophomore and freshmen assistants Brad Nelson, Johnson, Famous Hulbert, Brad Anderson, Brian Hamilton, Paul Krick, Jon Beutjer, Jason Brauer and Kropke.

“I don’t call them assistants. I call them co-coaches,” Kopecky said.

Kopecky still has the basketball fire as evidenced by his breaking down footage of opponents and creating slick and elaborate seasonend statistical books for players with help from Dorothy Rotolo at the South Campus resource center.

“I loved going to practice. I’m probably going to miss that more than the games,” Kopecky said.

“I’ve got the passion and energy for basketball, but I’m an old dog.

I’m not in the building anymore. I’m probably going to regret it next November, but I’m still going to come to games and do the scorebook for away games. And if they want someone to scout, I’m your guy.”

Brookfield will launch water meter project in April Will issue $2.5 million in bonds to fund village-wide replacement program

The village of Brookfield intends to issue $2.5 million in general obligation bonds to fund a water meter technology improvement project it will carry out through the rest of the year.

Starting in early April, employees of a third-party company hired by the village last fall to do the work will begin replacing what’s known as the meter transmission unit (MTU), which sends data from residences and businesses to a central system.

The existing MTUs on Brookfield water meters were installed about 15 years ago and are beginning to wear out, according to the village’s public works director, Carl Muell. The new MTUs will employ cellphone technology, which allows both residential and commercial meters to be read by one system.

Water customers can also download an app to their smartphones to track water usage and quickly spot possible leaks when usage is unusually high.

On March 14, village trustees voted unanimously to approve three separate

resolutions to prepare for the bond sale.

Brookfield will pay $42,500 to Kane McKenna Associates for financial advisory services, $25,000 to Chapman and Cutler LLP to serve as bond counsel and $9,000 to Storino, Ramello and Durkin for legal counsel.

On March 28, village trustees are slated to approve an ordinance announcing the intent to issue the bonds, which will start the clock ticking on a 30-day window during which signatures could be gathered on a petition that would force the bond issue to referendum.

If there’s no roadblock, the bond sale will take place in early to mid-May. Brookfield Finance Director Doug Cooper said he expects the village to have the bond proceeds in its possession by the end of May. However, the village won’t wait that long to begin rolling out the MTU replacement program.

The village will use existing water fund reserves to fund the program and then reimburse those expenditures with the bond proceeds.

The new MTUs must be replaced for every existing water meter – about 6,700 in all – inside residential and commercial buildings. Homeowners and commercial property owners will need to allow Midwest Meter employees access to their buildings to replace the units.

Village Manager Timothy Wiberg said the plan was to complete the MTU change-out effort by the end of 2022. Water customers will begin receiving letters in the mail soon informing them what they need to do to allow Midwest Meter access to replace the MTU on their water meters.

“This will be a relatively quick process once we gain access to the home to replace

the MTUs,” said Wiberg.

The manager added that it’s customary that the village will have trouble getting permission from some owners, for whatever reason, to enter their properties, but that the village would continue its efforts to get that permission to make the changes in 2023.

“Midwest Meter is accustomed to that and knows how to work with that, so they will be working with those homeowners to make sure we get access to every house and business to replace the meters,” Wiberg said.

The $2.5 million debt will be paid off, most likely over 10 years, through water fees charged by the village. Last July, Brookfield trustees voted to increase water rates by 18.5 percent, from $11.68 to $13.84 per 1,000 gallons of water.

Water rates were increased not only to fund the MTU replacement project but to accelerate the rate at which the village replaced its oldest water mains and to pay for other water infrastructure projects.

Last summer, Cooper indicated that the water rate increase will bring the village an additional $940,000 per year in revenue to pay for water system maintenance.

Roof fix at S.E. Gross School to cost almost $1 million Winning bid nearly double the estimate from 10 months ago

Brookfield-LaGrange Park School District 95 will spend nearly $1 million dollars this summer to repair the roof at S.E. Gross Middle School. At its March 10 meeting, the District 95 school board voted unanimously to award a contract worth $992,250 to St. Charles-based Malcor Roofing to work on the roof.

Instead of installing a completely new roof, Malcor will replace all the wet insulation on the existing roof, cut and patch that portion of the roof and then put a polyurethane coating over the entire roof. The fix comes with a 20-year guarantee.

Malcor reportedly is expert in this pro-

cess and made a substantially lower bid than other companies.

“His experience gives him a leg up,” said Steve Cashman, the district’s architect about Malcor.

Cashman said Malcor has used this process in other school districts in the western suburbs and at Brookfield Zoo. The contract includes $153,000 for masonry work and $17,850 for chimney work and tuck-pointing. The existing roof at S.E. Gross School is 23 years old.

The cost is much higher than the $525,000 to $550,000 that was estimated 10 months ago. But inflation has resulted in skyrocketing prices for construction work. Superintendent Mark Kuzniewski recommended against waiting in the hopes that the price

would decrease.

“These costs aren’t going to stop going up over the next 12 to 18 months,” Kuzniewski told the school board.

The school district plans to use approximately $400,000 in federal pandemic relief aid to supplement the $525,000 that was originally budgeted for the roof work.

In the next few years parts of the roof at Brook Park School will also have to addressed, although the deteriorating area of the Brook Park roof is much smaller than at Gross.

New positions announced In other District 95 news, the administration is planning to add three additional

staff positions next year, a social worker at Brook Park, an English as second language teacher and a special education resource teacher. The school board will vote on whether to authorize the new positions at its April 14 meeting.

The school board also voted unanimously to hire James Gay to become the new director of buildings and grounds, replacing Rich Batka who is retiring at the end of this year.

Gay, who is the assistant director of buildings and grounds at Morton High School District 201, will be paid $105,000 a year. Gay will begin work in District 95 on July 1, but Batka will not retire until Dec. 31 so he can help Gay in the transition.

Riverside Library seeks strategic plan input via online survey Patrons and nonpatrons alike asked to share views through March 31

Riverside Public Library officials are looking for input from their patrons – and those who may not be patrons – as they launch a new long-range strategic planning effort to sharpen their focus for the next three to five years.

Perhaps the easiest way to provide that input is to take the online survey that will be conducted through March 31 at the library’s website, riversidelibrary. org. There is a link at the top of the homepage, which will take you directly to the interactive survey.

The library is looking to compile some demographic information about who is taking the survey along with basic info on the survey taker’s library habits, what reasons they use library services, which of those services they find valuable and what services the library might add.

In addition, the survey seeks to find out why people might avoid using the library or if there are any barriers to accessing services, such as technology. It also seeks to find out how or if those taking the survey get their news about the library and its

programs and services.

The library posted the survey in midFebruary on its website. People can also pick up a print copy of the survey at the library, 1 Burling Road, during business hours: Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

“We have sent postcards and used social media posts [to direct people to the survey], but would love more responses,” said Library Director Janice Foley.

To entice folks to complete the survey, the library is offering people the option of providing their contact info once they submit their answers for a chance to win a gift card to a local business. The survey answers remain anonymous, said Foley, because the contact info is collected on a page separate from the survey.

The library’s board of trustees last adopted a longrange strategic plan in 2019. And while some of the goals in that plan are likely to be similar to those moving forward – like emphasizing customer service, diversifying outreach, maintaining fiscal stability and staying on top of technological changes – the new strategic plan won’t focus as heavily on physical improvements to the library.

The 2019-22 strategic plan specifically called out focusing on the lower-level renovation that was completed in 2021-22. The new strategic plan no doubt will focus on leveraging those improvements to provide a wider range of services.

Prescribed burn in Swan Pond seeks to root out invasives First time Riverside has focused fire on the park proper

March 17 was unusual for a St. Patrick’s Day in the Chicago area. Skies were cloudy, but in Swan Pond Park in Riverside it was an otherwise gorgeous morning -- as temperatures touched 65 degrees with just the slightest of breezes.

Parents pushed kids in strollers and dogs explored the sides of the path along the river as cyclists zipped by them.

Michael Collins was in Swan Pond Park that morning for another reason. He planned to set it on fire.

“It’s a great day for a burn,” he said before donning a bright yellow fire-retardant suit and igniting a drip torch and spraying its liquid fuel mixture onto last year’s brown, dry and brittle growth.

It wasn’t the first time Collins, Riverside’s village forester, conducted a controlled burn in the area. He’d done similar burns up on the bluffs overlooking the park and the Des Plaines River.

This was first time in anyone’s memory, however, that such a burn was conducted throughout the length of the park itself, which in the past year has been allowed to revert to its natural state as a kind of prairie in a floodplain. “I’d like to do this every year, but sometimes the weather and timing doesn’t cooperate,” said Collins. “There’s a small window before we get rain over the weekend and we might not have a dry spell like this again.”

A more naturalistic Swan Pond Park is a concept that has taken some time getting used to, and it wasn’t necessarily planned in the wake of the comprehensive regrading of the park in 2012 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after the Hofmann and Fairbank dams were removed.

But rain events in the years following have demonstrated just how much that regrading changed the park, particularly in the purposely scoured low area at the north end, where a culvert was built to drain storm and flood water from the park.

That part of Swan Pond Park essentially became wetlands, sometimes submerged for days and even weeks at a time, changing its purpose from a place where active recreation once took place to a passive one.

As a way of embracing that change and help mitigate the sogginess of the low area, in 2017 the village planted thousands of native wetlands plants, which battle for

D96 board OKs transition plan for new special ed chief Will spend 2022-23 school year learning from predecessor

Riverside Elementary School District 96 is hiring a new administrator slated to become its head of special education after Pam Shaw, director of student services and special education, retires after the end of the next school year.

At their March 16 meeting, the District 96 school board voted 6-0 to hire Nora Geraghty to the new, temporary position of associate director of student services starting on July 1.

“Whether that’s movable or permanent, I think is still being resolved,” said District 96 Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye said of the performance space. “That stage takes up a lot of space. We want it to still have some kind of stage possibility.”

Architects provided a schematic floor plan of their plans at the school board’s March 16 meeting. They estimated that the cost of renovating 4,068-square-feet of the school would be about $2.1 million, which would also include replacing the school’s boiler.

“We’re not a full drawn-out design process yet,” Ryan-Toye said. “It’s still an estimate.”

The district does not plan to do any work at Blythe Park School until the summer of 2023 and detailed plans have yet to be approved.

But district officials have decided to focus on repurposing the auditorium instead of building another addition to the school. An addition would likely cost more than $3 million and would require approval from the Riverside Preservation Commission because Blythe Park School, which was built in 1948 and is considered a masterpiece of mid-20th century school architecture, is designated a local landmark.

“Our goal isn’t to have a director and an associate director, it is really to have a powerful and seamless transition and the board agreed that perhaps the complexity of the special education and student services job is very unique,” said District 96 Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye.

Board member Joel Marhoul praised the idea of having someone work with Shaw for a year before succeeding her.

“This is unique in the public sphere where we actually have overlap between people and positions to allow for learning and getting familiar with the district,” Marhoul said.

Right now, Geraghty serves as an assistant director of student services in Northbrook District 28, where she oversees special education services at two elementary schools.

She was chosen for the District 96 job from a field of 25 applicants and will be paid

$133,000 next year. Geraghty is guaranteed a raise of no less than 3 percent in the 2023-24 school year if she succeeds Shaw.

Geraghty went through three interviews, including an initial screening interview via Zoom with Shaw and Ryan-Toye, then two in-person interviews with large committees of teachers and administrators.

“She was simply the most qualified candidate,” said Ryan-Toye who praised Geraghty’s collaborative attitude and caring nature. “We really put Nora through the paces with a very rigorous interview process.”

Geraghty, 43, grew up in Evanston. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in psychology in 2001 and earned a degree in school psychology in 2007 from Michigan State. She earned her administrative certificate by getting a master’s degree in educational leadership from Concordia University Chicago in 2019.

District officials say that they need to create more classroom space at Blythe Park School as the school transitions into having two sections of each grade. The repurposed auditorium space would house an art room in the upper part of the space and a music room in the lower end. Students would continue to eat lunch in the school’s gym.

“This makes it suitable for a two-section school,” said school board member Joel Marhoul, who chairs the school board’s facilities advisory committee.

In the past, plans to eliminate the school’s auditorium have met with opposition from some in the community.

“People do have a sentimental attachment to the auditorium the way it is set up right now,” said school board President Dan Hunt.

But board member David Barsotti said the building must change to meet to current needs.

“We need to respect the history, but we need to bring it up to the 21st century,” Barsotti said.

Geraghty said that she doesn’t know exactly what her responsibilities will be next year, but is looking forward to time spent being mentored by Shaw.

“It is such a unique commitment that the board is making to ensure that there’s just a smooth transition and adequate opportunity for me to be familiar with everything coming into this role,” she said.

or the leaders of St. Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church in Brookfield, it turns out that getting the cold shoulder from the archdiocese on buying the St. Barbara Church campus was a blessing in disguise.

Although it would have served the growing Serbian congregation well from a facilities standpoint, it looks like they’ve landed a more suitable, entirely contained chunk of property at 43rd Street and Joliet Avenue in Lyons – the recently decommissioned St. Hugh Parish property --for their future growth.

Officials of St. Nikola until about a year ago appeared ready to commit to Brookfield for the long term. They had submitted and won village approval for a plan to build a new church at their south Brookfield property – which in the past decade grew to include four neighboring single-family homes. All of the land was owned free and clear.

But the return on the cost to build such an edifice – with no guarantees from the village on what they might be able to do to convert the existing buildings for other uses, such as a school – apparently had them switching gears.

They thought they’d found “the future,” as the church board’s president called it last August, in the form of St. Barbara Parish, which came with a church, school building, social hall, rectory and a convent that could be used to house those seeking transitional housing as they immigrated here from Serbia.

However, the archdiocese wasn’t ready to sell St. Barb’s lock, stock and barrel. But the archdiocese just so happened to have about 2.5 acres of parish real estate nearby. After turning down St. Nikola in Brookfield last November, it took just four months to close the deal on St. Hugh.

Closer to home, the sale of St. Hugh has a couple of potential local benefits. First, a good portion of the sale proceeds will go to St. Paul VI Parish, the entity created last year with the merger of St. Hugh with St. Mary in Riverside and Mater Christi in North Riverside. That’s quite a windfall for a suburban Catholic parish, and one they’ll be happy to incorporate in their various ministries.

Renovating the buildings at St. Hugh will be no small task for St. Nikola officials, who apparently would like to open a school and operate other programs in the parish buildings, which include a gym and social hall. The old rectory will also be an ongoing maintenance project.

We assume (as the church’s board president told us last summer) that the purchase of the new land will mean the sale of the Brookfield property. That provides a real opportunity for Brookfield to get those parcels of land back on the tax rolls.

It’s a corner site in a great location in an otherwise completely residential district next to a park and a school. Residential real estate developers will be salivating at the prospect.

You don’t get many chances like that in a built-out Chicago suburb.

emember what it was like to pick up your phone and have a real person on the other end? That’s not always the case in today’s high tech, let’s-make-things-easier world. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like talking to a “robot” or a machine. To be honest, I feel foolish talking to someone who isn’t really talking to me.

My parents paid for me to have elocution lessons, and I was a speech and drama major, so I think I speak fairly well and clearly -- although Husband Joe claims not to understand me, but that’s another story.

The other day I was attempting to call information to get the phone number for Vesuvio’s Bakery (I needed to order St. Joseph’s cakes). I followed the proper procedure when asking for a listing in North Riverside.

However, the information robot gave me the number of a bakery in Chicago with a name not even close to Vesuvio. Perplexed, I decided to attempt getting the number again -- same problem. By now my frustration was leading to anger. AT&T is a communication

company and we were having a failure to communicate.

Now I am determined to get what I need and it was a battle I was not going to lose.

Hitting the “0” button and listening to my list of choices, I finally heard a voice. “Are you a real person?” I immediately asked.

He assured me he was and even sneezed, further proof. I blessed him for more than the sneeze. I proceeded to explain my dilemma and he asked me if I was disabled -- well, my leg is bothering me, does that count? He said he would switch me to another real person who also apologized for all I had gone through and I got the information I needed. Thank you, thank you real people.

After all of that, family and friends got their St. Joseph’s cakes. Believe me, after the first luscious bite, all was forgotten it was worth the effort.

She was the wife of the late Ivan Huffmaster and the late Joseph Jaworski; the mother of Mary Anne (Tom) Freeman, Joe (Tammy) Jaworski, Jennifer Jaworski and Gary (Glenda) Jaworski; the grandmother of Joey Jaworski, Kevin (Ryane) Freeman, Amber Jaworski, Jessica (Matt) Schabowski, Kyle (Samantha) Freeman, Charles Jaworski, Theresa Jaworski, Wayne Jaworski; and the great-grandmother of Shane, Leah, Reid. The Riverside-Brookfield High School baseball team hopes to build upon a great 2021 season.

“Strengths would be that we are a veteran team with a number of key returners, pitching depth,” RBHS coach Dallas Till said.

The Bulldogs have Notre Dame recruit and Major League Baseball prospect Owen Murphy and catcher and Lewis commit Brian Twomey as seniors leading an experienced group that finished 19-5 in 2021 and shared the Metro Suburban Conference championship with St. Francis at 6-2.

RBHS lost to Benet 3-1 in the IHSA Class 3A regional final.

Murphy, a 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher and shortstop, was named the Prep Baseball Report of Illinois Player of the Year last season. Till said Murphy likely will be a high pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft. MLB.com ranks Murphy as the No. 94 top prospect.

Cather/infielder McNamara also was named the team’s Most Valuable Player after hitting .329 with 12 runs batted in, 10 extra-base hits and a team-high 25 runs scored. McNamara, who will play at Wisconsin-Oshkosh, also was a standout for the football team.

Pitcher Stockbridge also played goalie for the boys soccer team. Karlson will miss the season due to torn labrum surgery during the winter.

RBHS badminton shows early promise in 2022 The Riverside-Brookfield High School badminton lineup definitely will have a senior flavor this season.

Seniors Claire Shanahan, Alyssa Krivak and Zona Evans all return from the sectional lineup for the Bulldogs, who are off to a 3-0 start. Seniors Alyce Silvie and Claire Harrison also rejoin the lineup.

“The strength of our team is definitely senior leadership,” coach Dan Herbeck said.

“They are the only athletes in the program that have experienced a full badminton season. They need to set the tone in practice and in matches for the younger players.”

At sectionals, Shanahan and Krivak came one doubles victory from qualifying for the

state meet. Evans was 0-2 in singles, her first match going three-sets.

“We only had a handful of matches last season due to COVID, so we feel like we are starting from scratch,” Herbeck said.

This season, Shanahan is 3-0 at No. 1 singles and with Sylvie at No. 1 doubles.

There are more seniors with returnees Marisa Sandoval, Abbey Castelino and Emony Hall as well as Fiona Murray, Liv Weber, Ashly Arellano, Becky Anderson and Elaina Isenhart.

The Lyons Township High School girls soccer team earned its second consecutive postseason trophy in 2021 by finishing second in the IHSA Class 3A state tournament.

“It’s put high expectations on us, but we tell them that every year is a new team and a new year,” coach Bill Lanspeary said.

The Lions have four strong returning starters and nine seniors after their powerhouse 20-1 season and perfect 13-0 in winning the West Suburban Conference.
