Brookfield Village Board will have final say By BOB UPHUES Editor

The Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended against granting a special use permit to the owner of The Compassion Factory art gallery, 9210 Broadway Ave., for religious assembly, dealing a local pastor another setback in finding a permanent spot for his congregation to worship. Despite a strong show of support for the Rev. Karl Sokol’s request from members of the community, members of the commission voted 3 to 2 – commission member Karen Miller and Chairman Charles Grund were absent – during a March 22 hearing to recommend denying Sokol’s application. Commissioners Patrick Benjamin, Todd Svoboda and Mark Weber voted against granting the special use, while Jennifer Hendricks and Chris Straka voted in favor. See GALLERY on page 10

Chinelos dancers bring a side helping of Carnival each weekend to downtown Riverside, performing at La Estancia, a Mexican eatery. Chinelos originated in the Mexican state of Morelos. The elaborate, brightly colored costumes and dances mix indigenous and Catholic traditions, and are now an indispensable part of festivals in certain regions of Mexico.

Riverside floodwall back on the radar $7.16 million project to get public airing on April 5

By BOB UPHUES Editor

A $7.16 million flood prevention project for the village of Riverside could break ground by 2020 now that the Metropolitan

Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) has promised funding. The federal government has pledged more than $4.65 million for the project, but said the rest had to be funded by a local source. Riverside’s municipal government

has said it cannot afford to fund such an expensive project. But in 2017, the MWRD told the village it would put $2.1 million toward the project See FLOODWALL on page 10
