The Riverside Chamber of Commerce has been serving the interests of businesses in the village for at least 92 years. The organization made its first appearance in a Riverside News article in April 1930.

But it might not be around much longer.

“We’re at the precipice of folding,” said Janice Foley, who in addition to being the director of the Riverside Public Library is the chamber’s first vice president and has been an officer of the organization since 2006.

According to prosecutors, a neighbor in Lane’s building reported hearing a bang and then four gunshots at about 3:10 a.m. However, police weren’t notified that anything had happened until about 1 p.m. on Nov. 13, when Lane’s cousin went to the apartment after not being able to reach Lane by phone.

He saw that the front door to Lane’s apartment had been forced open and called 911.

Curry reportedly fled to a relative’s home in Hyannis, Massachusetts, where the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force took him into custody on Dec. 9. Curry has been held in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, since his arrest.

In February, the Hyannis News reported that Barnstable County police responded to the home where Curry had been hiding out to investigate a report of gunshots coming from that address.

Monte Curry, 40, was taken into custody and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, intimidating a witness and cocaine trafficking, the Hyannis News reported. Police then executed a search warrant at the property, seizing two handguns, four largecapacity magazines, ammunition, 22 grams of cocaine and a large sum of cash.

A handgun seized by police at the Hyannis residence is being tested at the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab with the assistance of the Illinois State Police, said Buckley, to see if it was used in the Riverside homicides. Riverside police recovered several spent shell casings from the murder scene.

Brookfield police continue to search for a 25-year-old woman they say stabbed a man inside a home in the 4400 block of Madison Avenue on the afternoon of April 11.

Police have not released many details about the incident, but Police Chief Michael Kuruvilla told the Landmark that investigators had been able to interview the victim, who remained hospitalized as of the morning of April 12, but whose injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

According to Kuruvilla, the victim lived at the residence and had some type of relationship with the alleged offender. The stabbing stemmed from what police called a domes-

tic altercation. Police reported recovering a knife from the scene.

Police say they have identified a specific suspect, but she remained at large as of noon on April 12.

It is unclear who notified police of the stabbing, but someone called shortly before 3 p.m. to report the incident and police requested soft lockdowns at both nearby Congress Park School, which is in the 4300 block of Madison Avenue, and Lincoln School, which is also on the south end of the village.

Officers from Brookfield and surrounding municipalities established a perimeter around the area and used dogs and drones to search for the offender, without success.

Police called off the manhunt at about 5:30 p.m., but Madison Avenue remained closed to vehicles at Congress Park Avenue and two officers remained stationed outside the residence at 4405 Madison Ave.

Act. The IRS has received numerous reports of scammers sending a fraudulent version of a notice - labeled CP2000 - for tax year 2015. The issue has been reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for investigation.

This scam may arrive by email, as an attachment, or by mail. It has many signs of being a fake: • The CP2000 notices appear to be issued from an Austin, Texas, address; • The letter says the issue is related to the Affordable Care Act and requests information regarding 2014 coverage; • The payment voucher lists the letter number as 105C; • Requests checks made out to I.R.S. and sent to the “Austin Processing Center” at a post office

New allegations against Fenwick teacher already accused of misconduct Another Fenwick grad releases video, detailing teacher’s ‘threatening,’ ‘predatory’ behavior

A second Fenwick High School alumna has come forward claiming longtime teacher John Quinn allegedly harassed her while she was a student.

Emma Seavey, a 2015 Fenwick graduate, detailed her encounters with Quinn in a video posted April 5 to YouTube, calling out the “daily sexual harassment” she allegedly experienced by him while she was a junior in his history class.

Among the incidents she described, Seavey spoke of instances where Quinn ushered her out of his classroom and wrapped his arms tightly around her. One time, she said, Quinn “slid his hand under my bra strap over my blouse.”

The video, which has surpassed 10,500 views since it was posted, came roughly a week after Helen Quinn Pasin, another Fenwick graduate, took to YouTube and accused Quinn of inappropriately touching her when she was a student.

Pasin, who claimed the incidents between her and Quinn spanned over the course of two years, from 2012 and 2014, has since released a three-part video, publicly reading stories submitted by other former students who have stepped forward and recounted Quinn’s alleged patterned behavior.

In one of Pasin’s videos, former students, some of whom asked Pasin to remain anonymous, recalled how Quinn “touched them freely” or would use racial slurs in the classroom. Pasin read a submission from one former student, who remembered Quinn “making sexual innuendos about me in front of a class.”

In Pasin’s video, she called Quinn her “abuser” and described instances where he, like Seavey, hugged her tightly and afterward ran his cheek against her face while asking about her “love life.” In one instance, Pasin said, Quinn looked her up and down “and [made] noises that sounded like he was growling” while hugging her.

John Quinn has since released statements through an attorney, his brother Thomas Quinn, denying both Pasin’s and Seavey’s claims and highlighting his commitment as an educator. Quinn, who is the younger brother of Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, a 1992 Golden Apple Award recipient and a decorated boys basketball coach, has been placed on paid administrative leave since allegations arose against him in late March.

John has never sexually harassed any Fenwick student, at any time or in any place,” the most recent statement reads.

“John has always put students’ interests first and has always participated in Fenwick’s internal processes for addressing student concerns. He intends to continue doing so in the future.”

Second accuser speaks out During the almost nine-minute video, Seavey spoke about how the Fenwick teacher verbally harassed her in class in front of other students.

“Regardless of our lesson that day, Quinn would go out of his way to compare me to a marginalized woman and asked how it would feel if I were to be sexually assaulted by him,” she said. “Some examples of this include: ‘Ms. Seavey, if you were a Jewess and I was a Nazi officer, what would you do if I asked you to get down on your knees and pleasure me?’”

Seavey eventually told her parents and reported Quinn to school officials. Seavey said in the video she was then removed from his class and instructed to “avoid the entire wing of the building in which he taught for my own safety.”

Both she and Quinn, Seavey said, were also advised to not talk to each other or about the incident.

“While I kept up my side of the bargain, Quinn did not,” Seavey said.

She went on, describing other ways her former teacher

continued to seek her out.

“Quinn would make every effort to be as near to me in public places as possible,” Seavey said. “In the lunchroom, he would come and stand at the next table over or would talk to individuals at my table in a manner that was obvious: He was trying to be intimidating.”

“During my senior year, he would pick his moderator position during Mass, so that he was always at the end of my row, meaning I would have to walk past him to get communion,” she continued.

Even after Seavey graduated from Fenwick, she said Quinn often asked Seavey’s younger brothers and her now fiancé’s younger brother, all of whom also attended the school, about her, such as “how I was doing, where I was living and if I was still in a relationship with my now fiancé.”

“I should also add that he had none of these students in his class, so he was going out of his way to find them in the halls,” Seavey said.

In 2018, Seavey wrote to school officials and told them she was still experiencing “emotional reactions bordering on panic attacks” upon hearing John Quinn’s name.

She reached out to school officials once more last year after allegations against a priest at the school surfaced. Through a community alert email, Seavey rehashed the incidents that occurred between her and Quinn, pointing out his “threatening and predatory behavior.”

Seavey said she received an email response from the school and was informed that Quinn was given a “last chance ultimatum.”

Fenwick responds, investigation almost complete In an emailed statement released two days after Seavey’s video, the Rev. Richard Peddicord, Fenwick’s president, updated families on the school’s investigation into Pasin’s allegations of misconduct against Quinn.

Peddicord wrote that Fenwick “immediately launched a third-party investigation” once they were made aware of Pasin’s alle-

gations against Quinn last December, and that investigation is now near complete.

When asked for details on when the investigation would conclude, Fenwick spokesman Scott Hardesty told Growing Community Media he had “not been given a specific timeline.” Peddicord, however, wrote in the email sent to school families that “Fenwick is well prepared to take prompt and decisive action based on the findings and the facts.”

The Oak Park Police Department previously confirmed that Pasin filed a police report with authorities last September.

The report was later sent to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, which declined to press charges, saying the statute of limitations had expired.

The detective investigating Pasin’s claims also requested and received Quinn’s personnel file from Fenwick High School last October. The investigator noted the file included allegations reported between October 2012 and May 2015 of Quinn “putting his arm around students, putting his face close to theirs, back rubbing and shoulder massages that made students feel uncomfortable.”

In that same report, the police also noted there was a “previous DCFS case against

Quinn.”

That case was filed in May 2021, and the police report includes allegations of misconduct against Quinn dating back to 1990 with a male student.

Police attempted to contact the individual several times but were unable to reach him, according to a police report, which was obtained via a public records request.

Police also wrote they notified the person once more, informing him that a report has been made but the “statute of limitations has expired and the incident is no longer prosecutable.”

The report says the investigation was closed.

Quinn, through his brother, also denied this allegation and maintained that he has never “abused a Fenwick student at any time or in any place.”

“Fenwick High School investigated this accusation at the time it was made,” the statement read. “John fully cooperated with that investigation. After concluding its investigation, Fenwick determined that the accusation was unfounded. The Oak Park Police Department also closed its investigation and took no action with respect to this accusation.”

In an April 7 schoolwide email, Peddi-

cord informed families that Fenwick is a cooperating participant in the investigation and unable to relay specific details or aspects about the investigation. He urged that individuals with concerns related to employee misconduct at Fenwick are “welcome” to share their experiences and reach out at confidentialinfo@fenwickfriars.com.

“We promise you that we will act promptly and transparently upon learning the results of the investigation,” Peddicord wrote in the email. “We will continue to work every day to ensure our students feel safe and supported, and that they have the mechanisms in place to come forward with any concerns or complaints.”

For Seavey, in her video, she said she hoped her story would help “bring justice for myself and those subjected to similar abuse” by Quinn. Seavey, who now holds a master’s degree in social work with a specialty in mental health and trauma, counsels high school students.

“My largest concern, there, is Mr. John Quinn has continued to have access to students while teaching at Fenwick High School. I wish to see him be removed from Fenwick High School as soon as possible,” she said.

Cycle Brookfield loves to ride bikes. We host monthly bike-related events throughout the year. From Spring to Fall, we host a Social Slow Roll where riders of all ages and skills are welcomed to join us for a leisure ride through town. We meet every First Friday of the month starting at the Compassion Factory at 6:30 PM. These slows rolls are a great way to see your town and learn how to get from point A to B by bike. There are two can’t’ miss rides on our calendar every year. First our “Light Up the Night” ride is held around 4th of July. This is a night where we encourage riders to decorate their bikes in red, white, and blue lights. Next our “Haunted Halloween Ride” has also been extremely popular with riders of all ages. Cycle Brookfield curates the spookiest houses in town and one evening in late October riders come dressed in costume and tour each house!

Bike repair, rental biz coming to Riverside train station Local startup Gears2You takes over space in depot’s east wing

This summer visitors to downtown Riverside – or Riverside residents themselves – will be able to rent bicycles to tour the village’s genteel neighborhoods or take a spin on nearby trails courtesy of a new tenant at the Riverside Metra station.

On April 7, Riverside trustees voted 5-0 to execute a license agreement with Gears2You, a business started in spring 2021 by Riverside residents Pete Janunas and Paul MacNerland.

Started with the sole purpose of providing mobile bike repair and maintenance services, Gears2You is adding a roughly 300-square-foot bricks-and-mortar location inside the east wing of the train station, 90 Bloomingbank Road. Gears2You will continue to provide mobile services with its custom-outfitted van.

“Riverside is a perfect community for all of this,” Janunas told village trustees during a presentation at last week’s village board meeting. “There are so many cyclists that go through here.”

The month-to-month agreement, at $500 per month, requires the business to pay any associated costs, including any property taxes levied by the county. In addition, Gears2You agrees to host at least six free bike maintenance clinics or events related to bicycling and will participate in at least six community events annually.

No opening date has been announced, but it’s likely to be very soon.

“We’re mostly doing maintenance and service, so there’s not a lot to do,” Janunas said. “It’s not going to be your typical retail spot. We’re not going to sell bikes. We will have some accessories like helmets and locks, but it’s primarily service. The van will continue doing the van thing. That’s us – that’s Gears2You.” Bike rentals will be available May 1 to Sept. 30 on Saturdays, Sundays and extended holiday weekends. The business may also choose to rent sleds during the winter.

“The bicycle rental was an addition we had not foreseen but I think it fit in really well,” said MacNerland. “We were happy to add that to our offerings and having a train station and a bicycle shop in kind of an intermodal area I think … seems like a natural fit.”

Gears2You was a child of the pandemic, conceived during what MacNerland called “an idle conversation during the depths of COVID around a fire pit in his driveway.

The two men are neighbors on Groveland Avenue and both bike enthusiasts.

Janunas, who was general manager of a fitness studio when COVID-19 shut down his entire industry for months, decided it was time to change career direction. For the first time he would be an entrepreneur.

“It’s scary, but it’s nice being in charge of my own destiny, my own thing,” Janunas said.

A month after incorporating the business, they bought their van from a bike repair business owner in Virginia. The van was already fitted out with a pump, work stand, cabinets and tools. By September

the van was wrapped in Gears2You branding.

In the meantime, Janunas headed off to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for a two-week workshop to further hone his skills and receive certification from U of Q Institute, a trade school for bike mechanics.

More and more people responded to limited indoor activities because of the pandemic by pulling bikes out of storage and seeing they needed a tune-up before they’d be roadworthy.

“They’re dusting off the bikes that were in their garage or basement, and that’s where we came in,” Janunas said. “We decided to open this mobile bicycle repair service, because people either couldn’t fix their bikes or take their bikes to the shop.”

The company’s first big marketing en-

deavor was driving the van in the Riverside July 4 parade and handing out fliers.

“We kind of wanted to look at last year as the beginning, just getting the word out and knowing that in 2022 we were hoping that the pandemic would be less and we’d be able to add more business,” Janunas said.

The plan from the outset was for the business to be strictly mobile, stressing the “to you” aspect of the name. But Janunas at the same time was looking for locations to host clinics and work on bikes.

He first met with Village President Joseph Ballerine in January, and the train station location appeared a natural fit.

Janunas said the business will be open early in the mornings and in the evenings to serve commuters who may need work done on their bikes and then pick them up when they return from work.

MacNerland and Janunas also embraced the rental aspect of the business, one they hadn’t considered previously. Right now they have a fleet of four to six bikes, but they’re open to obtaining more – at least one tandem is on the way – depending on demand. The business will have outdoor access under the east portico to use for that part of the business.

“Ideally we’d like to have people come in from the city, take the train in -- and we’re right here -- grab a couple of bikes, tour the village, check out all the different architecture we have,” Janunas said.

Janunas said he hopes Gears2You can find creative ways to partner with other local businesses – there’s Sips & Sweets Café conveniently located right across the street – and organizations.

Gears2You partnered with the nonprofit Cycle Brookfield on a bike repair clinic in February and the organization will return the favor on May 6 when its Slow Roll Social Ride will cross First Avenue to visit Gears2You at the Riverside train station.

Gears2You will also be the starting point in October for the Tour de Proviso bike ride.

“The dream is to conquer this area and then buy a van and conquer another area, and keep going wherever the direction takes us,” Janunas said.

Gears2You is the first business to occupy the eastern portion of the train station since 2012, when a coffee shop called Soul Amici Express exited the space. A real estate office occupied the space prior to 2009.

LTHS workshop focuses on eliminating hate speech Follows incident where Black student faced racist barrage on social media

Two months after a Black student at Lyons Township High School was bombarded by racist tropes after making a social media post about Black History Month, the high school hosted a Zoom workshop about talking to students about eliminating hate speech.

The workshop was led by Tyrone Howard, a professor of education at UCLA who has been helping LTHS with its efforts to promote equity. The 90-minute long workshop also included comments from LTHS Director of Equity and Belonging Jennifer Rowe, Principal Jennifer Tyrrell and Superintendent Brian Waterman. Approximately 75 people, mostly adults, attended the April 5 virtual presentation.

“In many ways I feel like I am preaching to the choir here,” Howard said at the beginning of his presentation, noting that the number of hate crimes has been rising in recent years in the United States.

“We need to be better, we can be better, and we have to be better,” Howard said.

Howard also noted that that bullying in schools has increased over the last 15 years.

“It’s happening at earlier and earlier ages,” Howard said.

Howard said that Black, Latino and LGBTQ+ students are often the victims of bullying and hate speech.

“We are in a moment that, I think, is deeply troubling,” Howard said.

Howard said parents should talk to their children about what they see on social media and must speak up when they hear hate speech.

“Our silence makes us complicit,” Howard said.

Howard said parents and adults should look for teachable moments and make their messages to their children age-appropriate.

Parents should recognize that sometimes their children will make prejudiced comments.

“That does not mean you are a bad parent,” Howard said.

But Howard said parents need to speak up when they hear hate speech and be upstanders, not bystanders.

“We have to talk to people about being careful with their words,” Howard said.

Howard said parents should aim to be role models and try to develop a diverse group of friends.

“This is all learned behavior,” Howard said of hate speech. “It can be unlearned.”

Howard noted that there can sometimes be a fine line between hate speech and free speech.

gies, that’s fine,” Howard said. “It’s not our role to tell people what to think.”

Hate speech, not people, should be the focus.

“White and cisgender students are not the target,” Howard said.

Howard also said that those working to promote equity should expect pushback.

“There is going to resistance, there is going to be opposition,” Howard said.

At the end of the workshop both Tyrrell and Waterman thanked Howard for the presentation and restated their commitment to promote equity at LTHS. “We see the best parts of our society and the worst parts of our society play out in our hallways and we have a moral obligation to address that,” Waterman said.

Tyrrell ended the workshop by committing to apply the lessons learned during the workshop.

“I’m fired up to continue our journey and to amplify what we’ve learned here,” Tyrrell said.

This week some LTHS students will participate in the World of Difference training developed by the Anti-Defamation League that is intended to promote diversity and tolerance.

The workshop followed on the heels of a February report by ABC 7 Chicago about LTHS sophomore Heavyn Washington, who posted a picture on SnapChat on Feb. 4 about the Civil Rights Movement and wrote “Happy Black History Month and don’t forget to keep advocating for Black lives.”

In response she received many racist responses, including tropes referencing to bananas, cotton and guns. Many of the racist responses were apparently from fellow students.

At the Feb. 14 committee of the whole meeting of the LTHS District 204 Board of Education, Washington made a statement complaining of racism at LTHS. “Racism is the real epidemic and it’s taken such a big toll on not just me, but a lot of students who do attend LT, and it’s definitely been hurting the school learning environment,” Washington said. “It’s not just a onetime thing and it sucks that we have to have a racist outbreak to actually speak about these situations.”

According to the ABC 7 Chicago story another Black student at the high school, Olivia Williams, told her mother she was called the N-word in the hallways at South Campus the Monday after the Washington’s SnapChat post.

“I feel like I’m not welcome, and that if I go to school I’m in some type of danger simply because of how mean and aggressive they are when they say these things,” Williams told ABC 7 Chicago reporter Liz Nagy.

LTHS officials condemned the racist comments in statements by Superintendent Brian Waterman and school board President Kari Dillon.

“These actions do not reflect LT’s values,” Dillon said. “There are no words that will take away or undo the harm that is caused when we treat each other with anything less than the respect that each person deserves.

And yet, here we are again. We are deeply saddened by the damage this does to our community, especially to our non-white students and families.”

LTHS also held a healing circle for students at South Campus after the SnapChat post in an effort to promote healing and understanding. About 115 students participated during lunch periods said Rowe.

Is there a future for the Riverside Chamber?

Head or tail first, Easter treats are always delicious

I

s the Riverside Chamber of Commerce a goner? It’s come close to folding in the past but the business community has stepped up to keep it going.

The last time the organization hit this crisis point, it rebounded and thrived for several years before members started dropping away slowly. At one time around 2010 the Riverside Chamber boasted more than 100 members and had enough clout that it helped the village seal the deal to build the green parking lot at 61-63 E. Burlington St. by donating $10,000 toward the effort.

Those days are apparently long gone and the chamber now lists just about 30 members on its website. While things were on the downswing before COVID-19, the pandemic appears to have landed a real body blow.

The chamber did manage to organize a Holiday Stroll last year, but it’s been tougher and tougher to attract volunteers to organize and staff events the chamber has been known for through the years, like the auto show and cruise nights, the steak fry-turned-RiverFest and others.

Those who have led the chamber charge over the past 15 years are, frankly, worn out. If the chamber is to survive much longer, it’s going to need an infusion of enthusiasm and volunteer spirit.

Failing that change – and soon – the chamber will sign off.

Perhaps the local business environment has evolved to the point where chambers of commerce are no longer as important for individual businesses, who have greater, and cheaper, immediate access to customers via social media and email.

Like other chambers, the Riverside organization spent a great deal of its time organizing community events. While those are great, they are a ton of work and increasingly come with little financial benefit to support those efforts.

Longtime chamber officer Janice Foley suggested that maybe the chamber could live on in a different form, specifically dedicated to an event like the Holiday Stroll. Perhaps, there could be a Friends of the Stroll a la the Friends of the Fourth, who stepped up to ensure the village’s July 4 traditions had a permanent lifeline.

Whatever form the chamber takes, or doesn’t, in the future, it certainly seems like we’re at an inflection point in Riverside. The old chamber model, which had its origins in the civic boosterism of the early 20th century, is perhaps a relic that needs an overhaul.

In any case it needs involved, younger business professionals to create an organization that meets contemporary needs.

Or maybe it’s race is simply run.

elieve it or not, the arrival of Easter means another debate season. However, as with most of these differences of opinion dealing with food, they are not serious but people have strong opinions when it comes to chocolate Easter rabbits -- and this year I will add the lamb cake to further stoke controversy.

When it comes to chocolate rabbits, you have three choices -- milk chocolate, dark chocolate (which is better for you or so I’m told) and white chocolate. For me, the controversy isn’t about the type of chocolate, but about how you eat it. Are you an ears or tails first person?

Most people I have asked look at me strangely, mainly because they themselves have never really thought about it, knowing it doesn’t make a bit of difference. It appears the ears have it.

So if you are fortunate to get a chocolate bunny, I have a feeling you are going to think about it before the first bite.

As for the lamb cake, when I was a child I hated to cut into them. However, I quickly learned it was the only way I would get a piece. My mom would do the cutting, so there was no discussion as to which end got sliced first.

Somehow it seems the last morsel on the platter is the head, which eventually falls over, cushioned by a thick layer of cream cheese frosting (is it frosting or icing-discussion for another day) topped with shredded coconut. The cake itself is not important, but it is only appropriate that it be carrot cake.

My recommendations for these sweet treats: For anything chocolate, you can’t go wrong with Aunt Diana’s be it eggs or bunnies milk, dark or white. For a lamb cake, try out the ones made by Rose Zapletal of Rose’s Catering. I have already placed my order and I am looking forward to picking it up on Friday. Will it make it to Easter?

Climate change needs to be addressed Thanks to Editor Bob Uphues for his March 30 article in the Landmark on the effect of climate change on local trees (“Climate change a threat to maple trees, forester says”). Brookfield Forester Victor Janusz and Riverside Forester Michael Collins shared how maple trees in our area are particularly vulnerable to adverse weather such as extreme winter cold, wet springs and summer drought. The effects of climate change may have other severe and dangerous effects for Midwest plants in the future.

I asked Dr. Peter Raven about the effects of climate change on Midwest flora at a webinar last year. Dr. Raven is an expert on plant evolution and is the emeritus director of the Missouri Botanical Garden. I expected he would talk about danger to rare local plants, but his answer was surprising.

He indicated that if measures were not adopted to limit greenhouse gas emissions, the climate of the

Midwest would resemble that in Georgia now, within 10 or 15 years. The result is that crops such as corn and soybeans would be endangered.

I suppose we could adapt by planting different crops in the corn belt, just as foresters can chose a new variety of urban trees, but the economic damage to agriculture would be significant. It is evident that climate action is necessary now and that legislation in Washington and other capitals around the world is needed to address the problem.

The current geopolitical crisis in Europe has led to calls for increasing U.S. production of fossil fuels to offset Russian sources, but we should not make large commitments to long-term increase in fossil fuel use.

Accelerating the development of sustainable energy sources is a more important long-term goal.

D96 board approves $1.4 million in summer work at schools

Entire old section at Ames getting new roof, tuck pointing

The older portion of Ames School in Riverside will be getting a new roof this summer, and portions of the roofs at other schools in Riverside Elementary School District 96 will be replaced or repaired as part of a summer maintenance project that will cost just over $1.4 million.

On April 6, in a meeting held in the new multipurpose room at Hollywood School, the District 96 Board of Education approved awarding a contract to Chicago-based Tandem Construction to do the work, which will also include tuck-pointing the brick exteriors of all the district’s school buildings.

“These are not discretionary projects, they are necessary,” said school board member Shari Klyber.

The work at Ames will be the most extensive with a completely new roof being installed on the older portion of the building. The work at Ames is projected to cost $869,000.

Parts of the roofs at L.J. Hauser Junior High School and Central School will be replaced. The work at the Central/

Judith A. Creadon Former Riverside resident Judith Ann Creadon (nee Stehlik), formerly of Riverside and Three Lakes, Wisconsin, died March 10, 2022 at her home in Fort Myers, Florida.

Ms. Creadon grew up in Hinsdale and was a 1959 graduate of Lyons Township High School.

Her early employers were Norman Ross of Chicago and ABC News. Judy, who had an infectious laugh, enjoyed the company of Shih Tzus, Brittanys and Golden Retrievers (Forest & Nicolet). She loved playing bridge with Charter Member BLSS, vacationing, gardening and collecting antiques.

She and her husband of 60 years, David, lived for many years in Riverside. They then built their dream home on Four Mile Lake in Three Lakes, Wisconsin, where they lived for almost 40 years.

Ms. Creadon is was the wife of David Creadon; the mother of Michelle Abrams (Dr. Bruce) of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; the grandmother of Kelly (Michaela) Clements and Erin (Josh) Clements, both of Madison, Wisconsin; and the aunt of many nieces and

Hauser campus will cost $403,000 while the work at Blythe Park and Hollywood schools will cost a combined $163,000.

Work at Hollywood School in Brookfield is expected to minimal, since the school’s roof will need to be replaced in a few years.

The cost of the roof and masonry work is about 15 percent higher than estimated.

Tandem was initially outbid by Berglund Construction, the company that was the general contractor for Ames School expansion project that was completed in 2020, for the Ames portion of the work. However, Tandem agreed to match Berglund’s bid on Ames so it would be the sole contractor for District 96 this summer. No work will be done on the new part of Ames School.

The school board also unanimously approved awarding a contract worth $214,820 to Alessio & Sons of Lombard to construct a new waterline to Central School this summer. A new water line is needed because the old one broke last year when a new sprinkler system was being installed. This waterline will run under the Hauser parking lot instead of underneath the St. Paul’s Church property just to the southeast of Central School.

The cost to replace the Central School waterline also turned out to be about 20 percent higher than had been estimated.

“It’s not uncommon for smaller bids to be more variable,” said school board member Wesley Muirheid.

Meetings back on the move The school board meeting on April 6 was the first meeting in more than two years not held either remotely or at Ames School.

After holding meetings exclusively at Ames School since the fall of 2020, the school board has decided to go back to its previous schedule of holding regular board meetings, which occur on the third Wednesday of the month, at Hauser while rotating the monthly committee of the whole meetings, which take place on the first Wednesday of the month, at one of the district’s elementary schools.

The first meeting outside Ames in more than 18 months was held at Hollywood to show off the school’s new multipurpose room which opened late last fall. The new multipurpose room is currently used for music classes, staff lunch-and-learn sessions, and as a meeting room when two or more classes get together.

Eventually the multipurpose room will also be used as a lunch room for students. For now, Hollywood School students are still eating lunch in the school’s gym to promote social distancing since the gym is larger than the multipurpose room.

Elizabeth Crowley, 73, of North Riverside, died April 6, 2022.

Ms. Crowley born May 30, 1948 and was an oncology nurse at Jessie Brown V.A. Hospital for more than 40 years. She loved being in her garden, playing golf, going to plays, traveling with her girlfriends and going out to dinner every Friday night. She was a member of the Lakeshore Ski Club and the truest form of a friend -- caring, loyal and generous with her time and talents.

She was the daughter of the late Lawrence J. Crowley and the late Mary L. (nee Dobson); the sister of Maureen, Dennis (Cheryle), Kathy (Ray) Vesely, Joan (Dr. Mitchell) Weiss, Mary Mills and the late Lawrence; and the aunt and great aunt of many.

She was the center of the family who kept everyone connected. She loved to play cards and was a bridge partner to many over the years.

Ms. Hoyd is survived by her loving husband, Richard “Dick” Hoyd, of 57 years.

She was the sister of Marian and John and was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Virginia “Ginny” and Kristie.

She was the mother of Gary (Kristin) and Dale (Amy); the Gramma of Brett, Lyndsey,

Ella, Brock, Madeline, Logan, Luke and Julia; and Aunt Betsy to many nieces and nephews and their children.

Business owner slams meter spots for Quincy St. lot Distillery operator says dedicated parking needed for customers, staff

Riverside elected officials may have kicked a hornets’ nest on April 7 when they directed staff to designate seven public parking spaces in a lot south of the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railroad as metered parking instead of designating them to be used by businesses on East Quincy Street.

The decision followed a roughly 40-minute discussion which had appeared unlikely to produce a consensus, and which has at least one Quincy Street business owner upset.

“This has been an issue since we started our business 10 years ago, and it keeps getting worse,” wrote Derrick Mancini, the owner of Quincy Street Distillery at 39 E. Quincy St., in an email to President Joseph Ballerine on April 8. “The village has been and continues to poorly manage parking throughout the village: We remain with serious shortfalls where needed for businesses, while much parking downtown remains unused in both private and village hands.

Parking should be supporting our village businesses, and not considered a generator of revenue in the village.”

The 23-space lot will be restriped by public works employees in the coming weeks and the village will provide the public with metered parking through a smartphone app. The village may also set aside some parking spaces for nearby businesses, which may be able to pay for exclusive use of certain spots for either customers or employees. There could also be free spots set aside for time-limited general customer

parking.

“If the decision of the board is to create a hybrid of commuter and business parking and possibly 24-hour parking, we can put that information out there,” said Village Manager Jessica Frances, adding the village can always adjust how many spaces to allocate for what purpose depending on demand.

The parking lot likely will be open for public use by no later than May. In addition, the village has inquired whether Amazon would consider placing hub lockers in the former bank ATM drive thru lane in the lot at 3320 Harlem Ave. In addition to providing secure delivery

of Amazon orders, the village would also recoup sales taxes related to items routed through the lockers.

Despite the decision to use the property as a parking lot for now, officials did not rule out selling the roughly quarter-acre site if there’s a redevelopment opportunity.

The derelict building immediately to the west of the parking has drawn the interest of developers, Frances told the Landmark.

While there’s no purchase imminent or plan on the drawing board, anyone wanting to redevelop that property would probably also want the village’s parking lot as well.

Burlington St. Moreover, the village provides free permit parking north of the tracks for employees, which is great if you work there but is a bit of a hike for anyone who works on East Quincy Street.

Toward the end of the discussion of how to handle the newly available parking spaces in the Quincy Street lot, Ballerine suggested that the village needed to collect as much revenue as it could.

“On that basis, all of the parking should be leased or metered in the village,” Mancini said. “Why punish the businesses on Quincy versus those on Burlington?”

Riverside recently acquired access to 13 parking spaces in what is known as Lot 8, a U-shaped area that wraps around the rear of businesses east of the Arcade Building on the north side of East Quincy Street.

The spaces previously were assigned to First American Bank, which amended its agreement with the village on those spaces in March. The bank retains five spaces for its use from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Six parking spaces along the BNSF rightof-way that once were assigned to the bank will become paid commuter parking spaces. There are 22 people on the waiting list for commuter permits in that lot, according to Finance Director Karin Johns.

The remaining seven spaces, located closest to East Quincy Street along the east edge of the lot, will be metered parking available for anyone to use. The spots will have time limits of two to three hours, but because payment will be done through a smartphone app, they conceivably could also be used during daytime business hours by commuters who feed the meter remotely, thereby taking up valuable spaces that could be used by employees or customers of nearby businesses.

Ballerine disputed that parking was a large problem at any time of day along East Quincy Street, saying, “It’s not a desert.”

“There’s parking on the street. I never have a problem finding parking,” Ballerine said. “We need to gather revenue where we can and these are important spots.”

Looking to taste of glory in final season RBHS boys volleyball duo have teamed up since grade school

Riverside-Brookfield High School seniors Michael Burns and Kenny Fedorski have been volleyball teammates since their days as sixth-graders at Komarek School in North Riverside.

“I know his parents made some good food when I’d come over,” Burns said. “That’s what I remember the most. Burgers, pretty good burgers, and chicken.”

In their final season together, the pair hope to continue tasting success. The Bulldogs (95) would like to at least resume their stretch of 20-victory seasons from 2016-19 and capture their first regional since 2017.

Burns, a 6-foot-1 right-side hitter finalizing his college volleyball plans, leads RBHS in kills (123) and is second in total blocks (14).

The 5-11 Fedorski is tops in digs (75), second in service receptions (121) and assists (64) and third in kills (39).

“Sometimes I definitely see hints of those

early days where we’re kind of just going out there having fun,” Fedorski said. “I definitely enjoy that part about it, how we’re able to enjoy ourselves on the court when we’re doing good.”

They made Komarek’s seventh-grade team as sixth-graders. Burns had an older cousin who had played at Komarek and RBHS. Fedorski’s mother, Kim (Lee), was a member of the Bulldogs’ 35-4 girls volleyball team that reached the 1988 Class AA quarterfinals and played at Iowa State.

“We’re super happy with how those two guys have been playing,” RBHS coach Dan Bonarigo said. “They’ve been playing in the program for four years. But they’ve both been playing club their entire high school time, so they’ve got a lot of experience and it definitely shows on the court.”

They began club volleyball together with Third Coast Elite, which has since become 630 based in Darien. This is Fedorski’s first year playing with FORZA. “I think we have a good connection for playing for so many years together. And you build strong friendships along with that on the court,” Burns said. “I think if you have a better friendship with somebody you play better with them, too.”

When Harazin was out with an ankle injury during the Joliet West Tournament on March 26, Fedorski became primary setter.

He had a combined 47 assists in three-set victories over Jones and Joliet Central.

“I like the team effort [of volleyball]. It’s always mentally challenging to have to play as a team,” Fedorski said. “Most of the time I spend is probably at the computer watching [match and training] videos, different strategies. Just really learning the game and analyzing really helped me.”

In preparing for the next level, Burns stopped wrestling after sophomore year and

opted to move from middle to outside hitter this season. He’s increased his kills to 3.7 per set from 3.0 in his limited 2021 action with 72 kills in 24 sets.

“I think I’m too short to for the middle blocker position. Most [middle blockers] in college are pushing 6-5, 6-6, but the [outside hitters], you can be a little on the shorter end and still be able to do fine,” Burns said.

Against Joliet Central, Burns had his greatest offensive match with 20 kills, just one shy of tying the Bulldogs’ single-match record.

“I’d like [our team] to do very good in the road to state. I’d also like to possibly break any RB record,” Burns said. “I’m trying to make the team as good as we can and push us to our full potential because I think we have a lot of potential.”

Senior Owen Murphy had a perfectly great week for the Riverside-Brookfield High School baseball team.

Murphy pitched a six-inning perfect game as the Bulldogs defeated St. Patrick 10-0 on April 5. Murphy also struck out 17

of the 18 hitters faced.

For the week, the Bulldogs (8-2) went 5-0 by also defeating Lake Forest Academy 3-0 Saturday, Immaculate Conception 115, University High 20-2 6 and Schaumburg Christian 7-0.

Over the five games, Murphy was 7-for-15 with eight runs batted in with three home runs, 14 runs batted in, 12 runs scored and

six walks. Eight RBIs came against University High.

As a pitcher, Murphy is now 3-0 with a 0.00 earned run average, striking out 54 in 21 innings with no walks, four hits allowed and one hit batter. He’s also hitting .500 with six homers and 24 RBIs. RBHS is hitting .348 as a team with other standouts such as Luke Yachim (.429), Jake

Tyler (.476), Rex Dockendorf (.385), Ryan Novak (.321) Brian Twomey (.281, 12 RBIs), Cooper Marrs (.308) and Sean McDermott (.348).

Wyatt Murphy is 2-0 pitching with a 1.68 ERA. RBHS defeated Wheaton Academy 15-2 on April 11 with Owen Murphy collecting four more RBIs.

Smithing wins twice to pace RBHS boys at Bulldog Relays Bulldogs race to second in team standings

Riverside-Brookfield High School sophomore Luke Smithing won his track and field battle of nerves on April 9.

He has two championship medals as proof.

As the top seed in both hurdles races, Smithing won the 110-meter high hurdles in a personal-best 17.42 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.39) at RBHS’ 51st Annual Gary Johnson Bulldog Relays. He also had another personal best for third in triple jump (11.08 meters/36 feet-4¼ inches).

“It was awesome. I think it was definitely my best [meet],” Smithing said. “It felt really good and relieving to win both [hurdles] because I was really worried I was going to mess it up. I was supposed to win both because of my [seed] times, but I was worried I was going to run slower. It makes me really happy, honestly.”

RIVERSIDE CHAMBER ‘There’s an apathy’ from page 1 years, but the COVID-19 pandemic, which put the organization on ice for months, scuttled events and forced meetings onto Zoom, put it on life support.

“We didn’t do anything that first year [of the pandemic],” said Foley. “But it was already dwindling. When we did have meetings, it was always the same people attending and under 10 would come.”

The chamber’s website lists just 31 members, a far cry from the roughly 120 members the chamber boasted about a decade ago.

That heyday came under the direction of the organization’s longtime president David Moravecek, the owner of Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home.

He had retained that title – largely because no one would claim it from him – for 15 years until announcing at the end of 2019 that it was time for a change.

Sophomore Jack O’Brien (1,600 in 4:34.40) and the varsity 1,600 relay of Dalton, senior Andolini Escamilla, Arcos and Proteau (3:40.82) were third.

As a freshman, Smithing thought he would be a high jumper. He was thrown into a hurdles race, did well and never looked back. He finished fourth at section-

als in the 300 hurdles (44.24).

“I’m hoping to go to state this year. I’m hoping to get first or second (at sectionals),” Smithing said.

In the girls 41st Annual Bulldog Relays, RBHS junior Ava Connerty clipped and knocked over hurdles, but persevered twice.

She not only finished second in the 100 high hurdles (18.36) and 300 low hurdles (52.25) but did so with personal-best times.

The Bulldogs finished third overall in the team standings.

“It’s really fun, especially at home,” Connerty said. “I wish I could have done better but I’m still really happy with how I did.”

Senior Remy Hilpp (2.28m/7-6 in pole vault) and the varsity 3,200 relay of junior Bryce Pacourek, sophomores Maria Nelson and Lily Kocourek and freshman Gianna Gelb (10:56.88) also placed second.

In strong distance fields, sophomore Maria Dalton was fifth in the 3,200 (13:12.84) and Pacourek sixth in the 1,600 (5:53.38).

In the Bulldogs’ outdoor season debut, Connerty already is well ahead of last season, when she was an all-conference third in the 100 hurdles (19.43). Junior Joaliz Rodriguez’s

third place in the 300 hurdles (52.70) was nearly a seven-second improvement from 2021. “[I’m] just getting faster, making sure my steps between the hurdles are getting shorter, and [improving] my form, which has definitely been getting a lot better,” Connerty said.

When he agreed to be the president of the chamber, the organization was in a similar predicament. Longtime leaders were aging out and new leaders, business owners who had plenty on their plates, were not exactly rushing to replace them.

“I was overwhelmed at the time,” said Moravecek. “I had taken over the business just a couple years earlier.”

But Moravecek was also the chamber’s vice president and he had been expected to step into the top role.

“I was at the meeting when they said they were closing up the Riverside Chamber of Commerce,” he said. “So I stepped in to do my two-year term [as president]. It turned into 15 years.”

When Moravecek finally stepped back at the end of 2019, it was the same story.

Though there were members who stepped up, they did so reluctantly.

Greg Gorski, who runs a web consulting business and was a longtime member of the Riverside TV Commission, volunteered to take over as president. He could not be reached for this story.

Foley, a chamber member through the li-

brary since 2000, remained as first vice president. New officers included Jason Hinsley, a real estate professional, and Rich Lukes, who owns Comic Collector on Harlem Avenue.

Now the chamber’s treasurer, Lukes was “not super active” as a member prior to 2019, although he’s paid dues for two-plus decades.

“I was kind of guilted into it because of the lack of participation,” Lukes said.

“That’s kind of been the story for the past couple of years.”

Just a couple of months after the change in leadership, the COVID pandemic swept through.

While the pandemic didn’t help, said Lukes, it’s not the reason the chamber has been struggling.

“There’s an apathy about getting involved,” said Lukes, who is also president of the West Suburban Symphony board of directors.

Once the sponsor of car shows, an annual steak fry fundraiser, the Riverside Person of the Year dinner, a newer event called RiverFest and the beloved Holiday Stroll, the only event that appears to have survived the pan-

demic is the Holiday Stroll.

Without a chamber to support it, that’s in jeopardy, too.

“The Stroll’s been successful and we get a little more participation for it, but other than that, no one wants to step up,” Lukes said. “You can’t have the same five people handle everything.”

The chamber sent a survey to its members at the beginning of March to gauge interest in the organization. There was also a link to the survey posted on Facebook, so members of the public could weigh in. It received 17 responses, said Foley, with several of them indicating the chamber wasn’t important to them.

“And the ones who are interested, and I include myself in this, are getting older,” Foley said. “That’s not what you need for leadership.”

The chamber’s officers last met on March 30 for what amounted to a decision to place the chamber in hospice.

“We want to let people know this is how we feel,” said Lukes. “Maybe it’ll shock people and see if it pushes them to get involved.

“If not, it’s been a nice run.”

The boundary increase for this NHL will include the portion of the Village of Riverside west of 1st Avenue which was initially developed following the Olmsted plan. The characteristics necessary for inclusion within the district remain intact.

The western portion of the Village of Riverside conveys the park-like character, tree-shaded lots, curvilinear roadways (Ridgewood, Parkview, and Wabaunsee), housing density, relationship of houses to streets (setbacks), and the hierarchy of roads with spacious intersections, characteristic of Olmsted and Vaux’s 1869 plan. The roadways and their rights-of-way feature the characteristic streetlights, tree-shaded lawns, and pedestrian sidewalks found throughout the balance of the village. Housing types within this western portion of the Village of Riverside is similar to that found on comparable streets within the original NHL boundary. All of which enables the western portion of the village to convey the park-like character for which Riverside is recognized as nationally significant.

The National Park Service (NPS) is notifying property owners, local and state officials, interested individuals, organizations, and Congressional offices. Notice of this proposed action is also published in the Federal Register.

All notified entities are encouraged to comment on the updated documentation if they so choose. Interested parties may submit written comments and recommendations which will be reviewed by the Landmarks Committee and provided to the Advisory Board. Interested parties may also attend the Landmarks Committee meeting and, upon request, will be given an opportunity to address the Committee concerning a property’s significance, integrity, and proposed boundaries.

The Landmarks Committee will review and report on the proposed update to the Advisory Board, which in turn will make recommendations concerning the update to the Secretary of the Interior.

The NPS partners with NHL managers and owners to encourage and support conservation of these nationally significant sites. Designation as an NHL is not a land withdrawal, does not change the ownership of an area, and does not dictate activity. Owners of NHLs do not give up any rights or privileges of ownership, nor do they give up use of the area.
