The board of the controversial Lyons Township Trustees of Schools, better known as the school treasurer’s office or the Lyons TTO, will likely soon more than double in size.

A bill that would increase the size of the board that governs the Lyons TTO from the current three members to seven recently passed the Illinois General Assembly and is now ready to be sent to Governor J.B. Pritzker. The bill would only apply to the Lyons TTO and not any of the other TTO’s that exist in suburban Cook County.

The purpose of expanding the board of the Lyons TTO seems to be to appease school administrators and school board members who have complained that they have little

Zalewski challenger blasts rep on gas tax record Rashid on attack as Democratic primary two months out

Abdelnasser Rashid has come out swinging in his bid to unseat State Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside).

Just a month after announcing that he was challenging Zalewski in the June 28 Democratic primary, Rashid has raised more than $125,000 and put out two digital ads attacking Zalewski. One ad criticizes Zalewski for sponsoring legislation that would lead to higher gas taxes and the other accuses him of voting to allow utilities to raise their rates.

One ad shows a not particularly flattering photograph of Zalewski juxta positioned against a photo of a gas station price sign showing gas at $4.75 a gallon for regular. The ad says that Zalewski introduced two bills that would allow higher gas taxes.

“When gas prices are going up, to ask families to pay more for gas isn’t leadership, it’s punishment,” Rashid told the Landmark in a telephone interview.

On Jan. 10 Zalewski introduced a bill that would allow all municipalities in Illinois to levy a motor fuel tax. Currently only municipalities in Cook County can levy a municipal motor fuel tax of up to three cents a gallon. Zalewski’s bill was referred to the House Rules Committee and no further ac-

In fact, earlier this month Zalewski supported, and the General Assembly approved as part of its budget package, a six-month suspension of a scheduled 2.2 cents per gallon increase in the state gas tax that had been scheduled to take effect on July 1.

Zalewski noted that gas tax funds pay for needed repairs to roads and bridges.

“I stand by the work we did to invest $2.5 billion in the Illinois economy by repairing its broken infrastructure,” Zalewski said.

“I would also stand by the bill I sponsored and passed to cut the gas tax. I’m proud of my record on these issues.”

Zalewski also said that just because he introduces a bill doesn’t mean he necessarily supports it.

“In my capacity as revenue and finance chairman I often file bills to make sure

that I can control the legislation,” Zalewski said. “I’m often willing to not pass my own bills just because it’s in the best interest of the state not to do so. It goes with the territory.”

Rashid didn’t buy that explanation.

“Other members can introduce their own bills,” Rashid said. “Mike Zalewski can’t run from his record, he tried not once but twice to increase the gas tax on families in Illinois.”

In 2019 Zalewski sponsored an amendment to a bill originally introduced by former House Speaker Michael Madigan that would have permitted municipalities that adopted a responsible bid ordinance approved by the state Department of Transportation to impose a local gas tax of up to three cents a gallon. Although that specific bill died without a vote other legislation passed in 2019 that allowed non home rule communities in Cook County to levy a municipal gas tax of up to three cents a gallon without a referendum.

“Working families are struggling to pay their rent and pay their mortgage but Mike Zalewski decided it was more important to do Mike Madigan’s bidding,” Rashid said.

Despite Rashid’s attacks on him Zalewski told the Landmark that he plans to run a positive campaign based on the record he has compiled in his 14 years in the legisla-

ture.

“I’m going to run explaining my record and we’re going to do our best taking our message directly to the voters and we’ll see where the chips may fall,” Zalewski said.

Zalewski said he didn’t think voters were in the mood for negative attacks.

“I don’t think people are interested at this moment in a campaign that devolves into negative attacks,” Zalewski said. “I think with the rising costs based on inflation, the concern about Ukraine and Russia, and rising gas prices and the uncertainty about just general stuff, the real apprehension people feel right now, the last thing they want is for candidates for state representative going into the mud, at least for me. I can only speak for myself.”

Rashid has raised $127,927 for his campaign since announcing his run on March 14. His father, a retired home furnishings store owner, is his campaign’s largest donor contributing $10,000 and loaning the campaign another $25,000. His mother donated $2,000 to his campaign and Rashid himself personally donated $5,000 to his campaign committee.

Zalewski still has a significant financial advantage as his campaign committee started the year with just over $338,000 in the bank.

“We’ll do what we need to do to defend my record,” Zalewski said.

Illinois lawmakers pass $46.5 billion budget Package includes temporary tax cuts to soften impact of inflation

Illinois lawmakers worked until the early hours of April 9 to pass a $46.5 billion spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year, as well as a $1.8 billion package of mostlytemporary tax cuts that Democrats said are intended to soften the impact of inflation on working families. After passing the

budget the legislature adjourned.

Republicans criticized the tax cuts as election year tax cuts as gimmicks designed to help Democratic lawmakers facing tough races.

“Let’s call this budget what it really is — an attempt to buy your vote,” Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods), said in a statement.

All but a handful of Republicans voted for the measure, but the GOP criticized it for consisting of mostly temporary tax relief.

But State Rep. Mike Zalewski, (D-Riverside), challenged that criticism noting that Republicans also voted for the temporary

tax cuts.

“If it was an election year gimmick then it was a bipartisan election year gimmick, because the state GOP legislators all voted for the tax cut bill,” Zalewski said. “So, I just don’t find a lot of sympathy for the notion that this is all gimmicks when the Republicans all voted for my bill on tax cuts.”

As chairman of the House Revenue Committee and the chief House sponsor of the tax-cut bill, Zalewski took some credit for the state’s improving financial condition.

Zalewski said that this was the best Illinois budget in a long time. The budget added $1 billion to the state’s depleted rainy day fund.

“I took over as chairman of revenue in 2017 and we were on the brink of insolvency, and now five years later we have the best budget in Illinois in a generation,” Zalewski said. “We’re cutting taxes. I anticipate a credit upgrade and I won’t take full responsibility but I think I played my small role and I’m really proud of it.”

For over a decade, Chad Lopez and Cynthia Gaspar have dedicated their efforts to enriching the lives of hundreds of west suburban dog owners through the caninecentric services, events and expertise offered at their store, The Urban Mutt.

With two locations in Berwyn’s Depot District and downtown LaGrange, the husband-wife duo spent years building relationships with clients, striving to offer them a unique, old-fashioned, customer service-based approach to shopping for all their dogs’ needs in an environment cozier than that of a big-box pet retailer.

Twelve years after opening their original storefront, The Urban Mutt is now tackling a new challenge — weaving itself into the neighborhood-centric fabric of Brookfield.

On March 10, The Urban Mutt’s new Brookfield location quietly opened its doors at 8520 Brookfield Ave., turning an outdated storefront into a modern, onestop shop for all your dog’s needs, from food and health to play and safety.

The new Brookfield location signaled the closure of the original Berwyn store, providing the business with larger square footage and an introduction to a community the couple says seemed eager for a niche pet store.

The Urban Mutt’s origins trace to the late aughts. Lopez, who previously worked as an on-air carpenter on HGTV’s “Designed to Sell,” began learning more about dogs, including the variety of products and services blossoming in the industry. In February 2009, he and his wife launched an online web show called “The Urban Mutt,” featuring Chicagoland’s dog-friendly services and dog owners.

As Lopez and Gaspar began learning more about the world of dog products and services, they began hosting in-person, dog-friendly events. People began asking them where their retail store was, and while they didn’t have their own business at the time, they figured, “Why not take the plunge?”

Cynthia Gasper and Chad Lopez, husband and wife duo, see heavy paw traffic already. storefront in Berwyn’s Depot District, and it grew fast enough that Lopez and Gaspar decided to open a second location, settling on LaGrange’s bustling downtown.

Lopez says what has set The Urban Mutt apart from other pet retailers all these years is simple — the mom-and-pop business’ approach to truly getting to know its customers.

“Our main focus is always going to be customer service,” he explained. “We know our customers, we know what their dogs need. We’re able to pivot a lot faster than a bigger store, so if somebody needs something we don’t have, we can specially order it in and get it pretty fast. And, we carry a lot of things that the big box stores don’t really carry — a smaller, more curated selection.”

Fast-forward to 2019 — despite a looming pandemic, The Urban Mutt was busier than ever, and Lopez and Gaspar decided it was time to expand.

Originally, they figured they would keep

the LaGrange location but look for a larger Berwyn location. However, after looking around for a new space in Berwyn, they say they couldn’t find any space which fit their needs.

Then, during the pandemic, they wondered about pivoting to more of an online sales and delivery-style model. They considered having the LaGrange store be their sole storefront, and a new, larger location serve as more of a warehouse-style business with delivery options.

In November 2021, the couple closed on a new property in Brookfield, and as they began renovating the Brookfield space, they quickly noticed how many dogs were in the immediate area and were surprised by the amount of foot traffic.

So, they made the decision to transform the Brookfield location into a full-fledged retail experience.

“It was really the people in the area that changed our mind,” Lopez said. “They See URBAN MUTT on page 10

Riverside ready to party like it’s 1822

Community invited to events marking bicentennial of Olmsted’s birth

In the next week, the village of Riverside will get down to the serious business of celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted, the renowned landscape architect who is credited with designing the 1869 General Plan for Riverside, in addition to other landmark parks in Chicago and across North America.

The Frederick Law Olmsted Society will kick off the celebration a few days early on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., which is planting day for the Olmsted Overlook – a small, curated grove of trees native to the Midwest – which the organization is gifting to the village Olmsted designed.

Planting volunteers are asked to meet at the overlook site, which is on the bluff overlooking Swan Pond Park in the 100 block of Fairbank Road, at 9 a.m.

Then on Olmsted’s birthday, Tuesday, April 26, there will be a couple of events celebrating the landscape master’s bicentennial.

From 4 to 6 p.m., the Riverside Historical

Commission invites the community to join them at a “birthday party” at the downtown train station at 90 Bloomingbank Road. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Then at 7 p.m., all are invited to head across Guthrie Park to the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, where the Olmsted Society will present a museum-quality botanical box to the library, which will put it on public display.

The Olmsted 200 gift was created by Francisco Gonzalez and Shilin Hora using seeds collected during “seed hunts” organized by the Olmsted Society in 2021 and then artistically arranged over a reproduction of the 1969 General Plan for Riverside.

On display at both April 26 events will be a resolution passed earlier this month by the Illinois House of Representatives, declaring April 26, 2022 Frederick Law Olmsted Day in honor of his 200th birthday.

The resolution was spearheaded by state Rep. Michael Zalewski, a Riverside resident who represents the 23rd District, and the Olmsted Society in concert with other Olmsted-friendly groups and people, including the Chicago Parks Foundation, the Chicago Friends of the Parks, Glessner House Museum, Preservation Chicago, Julia Bachrach Consulting and University of Chicago Professor W.J.T. Mitchell.

Morton Arboretum donating trees to Riverside, LTHS Part of the nonprofit’s centennial celebration effort to plant 1,000 saplings

The Morton Arboretum is donating 15 trees to the village of Riverside that will be planted in the Blythe Park neighborhood.

Morton Arboretum is celebrating its 100 birthday this year by donating 1,000 trees throughout the Chicago area in what they are calling their Centennial Tree Planting Initiative.

“They’ll all be planted in Blythe Park and parkways around the school, public right of way, some triangular parks and adjacent areas,” said Riverside Village Forester Michael Collins of the 15 trees being donated to Riverside.

The trees will include a variety of species including bald cypress, persimmon, eastern rosebud, apple serviceberry, sugar maple and Triumph elm.

the Blythe Park School PTA, pushed to have Blythe Park School students help in the planting and care of the trees.

“Lisa Gaynor found out about arboretum giving trees to village and … kind of jumped out and got involved in it, suggested Blythe Park School, but the wheels were in motion,” Collins said.

The trees will be planted in Blythe Park and in public right of ways near the school, including the triangle parks located along Eastgrove Road at Blythe Road, Kent Road and Delaplaine Road.

The trees are expected to be planted in the first week on May. Gaynor suggested getting Blythe Park School students involved in the planting as an educational exercise.

“Blythe Park’s Garden Club will assist with the digging of the holes for several trees,” said Casimira Gorman, the principal of Blythe Park School in an email.

“Once the trees are planted, all Blythe

Park students will plant flowers around the circumference of the trees closest to the school. Students will also assist with the care and watering of the trees.”

Lyons Township High School is also getting trees from the Morton Arboretum Centennial project. Volunteers will plant a total of 48 native trees -- sugar maple, persimmon, oak, linden and elm saplings -- on the grounds of both campuses on May 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in an effort to help restore the urban tree canopy.

The saplings will be planted as part of the Chicago Region Trees Initiative and the Morton Arboretum’s Centennial Tree Planting Initiative. Anyone who would like to volunteer to plant trees at the LTHS campuses can sign up online at tinyurl. com/3k66bksu.

That was due in part to pandemic-triggered shifts in consumer behaviors that led to more spending on taxable goods than services which are not taxed in the state, increased federal unemployment benefits which are taxed at the state level, and increased tax revenue due to higherpriced consumer goods relating to inflation.

Those and other factors led to higher performance of sales tax and both personal and corporate income tax revenues, according to a presentation last month from the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Rep. Tom Demmer, (R-Dixon), who is running for state treasurer, said the pandemicrelated revenue windfalls have allowed Democrats to grow funding faster than year-after-year revenues.

“And when this one-time revenue dries up, the only thing you’ll know how to do is go back and raise taxes yet again,” he said.

Other details The Fiscal Year 2023 spending plan also provides for the statutorily required $350 million in additional funding for public schools through the Evidence Based Funding formula that was originally adopted in 2017. Higher education would see increases as well.

The budget also directed an investment of $235 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funding to the Reimagine Public Safety Act aimed at early crime intervention.

Brookfield seeks applicants for flood-prevention program Village will reimburse homeowners up 50% of cost to install systems

Brookfield homeowners who have been putting off installing a flood-control system for their homes because of the cost may want to reconsider now that the village has restarted its 50-50 reimbursement program.

On April 11, trustees voted unanimously to earmark $300,000 in 2022 to reimburse homeowners who install one of three types of flood-control systems for their properties.

Those taking advantage of the program will also not have to pay permit fees.

The village will begin accepting applications as early as this week. Information and a brochure about the program will be posted on the village’s website at brookfieldil.gov.

Homeowners applying to be part of the program can receive rebates of up to $3,000 for installation of a backflow prevention valve, up to $4,000 for a backflow prevention valve with a bypass pump and up to $5,000 for installing overhead sewers.

A plain backflow prevention valve is the cheapest and simplest flood-control system to install. The device acts as its name implies; a valve inside the pipe will allow water to flow out of the home to the sewer but will not allow sewerage to back up into the home.

At the same time, during very heavy rain events, if the valve is activated then water from inside the home will also be unable to flow out and backups could result if a resident continues to run lots of water while the backflow prevention valve is engaged.

The two ways around that problem are both more complicated and more expensive.

Homeowners could opt to install a backflow prevention valve paired with a bypass pump.

If the backflow prevention valve is engaged, the pump would direct water coming from the home around the valve into the sewer system.

The most expensive solution is installing overhead sewers, which eliminates all gravity drainage beneath the basement floor.

Overhead sewers are installed just below the first floor, and basement sewerage is pumped up and out of the home. Overhead sewers are the most reliable and are the standard for any new single-family residential construction in Brookfield.

The vast majority of homeowners will likely opt for the simplest solution, said Public Works Director Carl Muell.

“My prediction is that we’re not going to see a lot of overhead sewer system options in this program,” Muell said. “It is a big undertaking for a homeowner and a lot of construction on their homes. A lot of people don’t want to get that involved.”

Muell said the simple backflow prevention valve is the most popular solution for homeowners.

“They’re the most cost-effective, they’re the cheapest and they work,” Muell said.

The reimbursement is for installation of the flood-control system only and does not include costs for any interior demolition/ repair, landscape repair or others that may result from the installation. Repairing basement seepage problems is also not eligible for reimbursement.

Brookfield first began offering reimbursement for installing flood-control systems in private homes in 2013 after a series of storms over a five-year period caused repeated basement flooding. The village initially set aside $120,000 for the program, but it proved popular enough that an additional $100,000 was

earmarked in 2014.

By about 2016, the village discontinued the program due to declining applications and for budgetary reasons.

The program approved by village trustees on April 11 also simplifies what had been a more complicated process, one that had required at least three written estimates. The program will be administered by the Brookfield Community Development Department and while the village still recommends obtaining multiple estimates from contractors, only one is necessary to apply.

On April 11, trustees also agreed with Village Manager Timothy Wiberg that the village would not reimburse homeowners who installed flood-control systems prior to the restart of the program. Wiberg said he’s received multiple calls asking about retroactive reimbursement but told elected officials he doesn’t recommend doing so.

“I understand people are frustrated by that,” Wiberg said. “If we go back two, three, four years … it’s very unwieldy and it’s very difficult to administer that.”

The village did not offer retroactive reimbursement in 2013, Wiberg said, so where is the line drawn?

“I think it creates a dangerous precedent and an administrative logjam for the staff,” said Village President Michael Garvey. “It’s disappointing to the residents who made the investment, but we had the same issue in 2013.”

‘Everybody loves Frank’

Now 96, Frank Veselak has volunteered at the zoo since 1988

n 1988 Frank Veselak, then 62, retired from his job as a power tool repairman at Sears. At the time his wife Marilyn worked part time in the education department at Brookfield Zoo. She suggested to him that since he now had time on his hands why not volunteer at the zoo. Veselak thought why not. Now, 34 years later he is still volunteering at Brookfield Zoo. “She’s the one who talked me into volunteering at the zoo so I figured I’ll give it a try,” Veselak told the Landmark in an interview last week at the zoo.

Veselak, now 96, is the oldest active volunteer among the more than 400 volunteers at Brookfield Zoo. But Veselak is not the zoo’s longest serving volunteer. That distinction belongs to Joan Canchola of Riverside who has volunteered in the Membership Services Department at the zoo for 46 years.

Every Wednesday from March through Thanksgiving between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. you can find Veselak at the Tropic World exhibit. When Veselak first came to Brookfield Zoo to volunteer he was asked where he wanted to be stationed. He said it didn’t matter. They had a need for a volunteer in Tropic World where the apes and monkeys are on display.

So that is where he was assigned and that is where he has stayed for 34 years.

“I just love it in Tropic FRANK VESELAK World,” Veselak said. “I Zoo volunteer like to talk to people, I like to talk to the guests, especially the school children.

I enjoy talking to people. If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be here.”

He’s never really considered asking for another assignment. He says that he gets all sorts of questions. He often explains one key difference between monkeys and gorillas is that while monkeys have tails gorillas do not.

After about 10 years as volunteer in Tropic World, Veselak completed the training to be a docent.

“I just love it in Tropic World. I like to talk to people, I like to talk to the guests, especially the school children.

I enjoy talking to people. If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be here.”

Veselak knows the gorillas well.

“I got to a point where just by looking at them I could tell who’s who,” Veselak said.

Veselak enjoys talking to the zookeepers about the gorillas and monkeys. If something unusual is going on with one of the animals the keepers ask Veselak to keep an eye on the animal and report back to them. Veselak has developed a close relationship with the keepers.

“The keepers in Tropic World are the best,” Veselak said.”

I enjoy working with the keepers and the docents.”

And everyone likes Frank.

“Frank is so amiable,” said Regi Mezydlo, the director of volunteer engagement at Brookfield Zoo. “Everybody loves Frank.”

Veselak especially loves the gorillas. Twenty-six years ago, he and his wife “adopted” Binti-Jua, who is now the zoo’s oldest female gorilla at 34. It was part of the zoo’s adopt an animal program which involves making annual donations to the zoo.

Watching two live gorilla births has been a highlight of his time volunteering.

Veselak grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago and moved to North Riverside with his wife 57 years ago. He serves as Block Captain for his block in the 2400 block of 10th Avenue.

When he was 18 in 1944, Veselak was drafted during the

height of World War II. He was assigned to what was then called the Army Air Corps. He was trained as the top gunner on a B-29, stationed in a small bubble on the top of the B-29 fuselage. The war had ended by the time he made it to Gaum so he didn’t see any combat.

The highlight of his military career came during a long training flight from Tampa to Kansas and back. Heading back from Kansas and cruising above the plains the pilot called Veselak down from his bubble to the cockpit. Take the controls the pilot told him. He did and he flew the B-29, with a co-pilot next to him, for about 45 minutes.

“It was a big thrill, here I was at the controls of the biggest aircraft in the world,” Veselak said.

After being discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946 Veselak got a job at Sears where his brother-in-law worked.

Veselak and his wife used to take their two children to Brookfield Zoo on Sunday mornings back when parking and admission were free during those hours.

At 96 he still golfs once a week and bowls twice a week. He takes no medications and has no problem standing throughout his shift.

But he is wondering how long he will keep volunteering at the zoo.

“I’m still thinking about it, maybe one more year I’ll have 35 (years as volunteer), I’m sort of thinking of maybe hanging it up, I’ll be 97 years old,” Veselak said.

But he also says he may keep volunteering as long as he can.

“As long as I’m active,” Veselak said.

Neither Mike Thiessen, the president of the TTO board, nor TTO treasurer Ken Getty responded to requests for comments about the bill.

Although Landek was the driving force behind the legislation he did not sponsor the bill saying that he doesn’t feel the need to have his name on bills.

“I try to keep under the radar but I’m not successful all the time,” Landek said.

At first, they wondered if Brookfield’s proximity to the La Grange store would result in taking customers away from the other store. But through conversations with passersby, they learned many people, including newer residents and new dog owners, had never heard of The Urban Mutt, and were happy to patronize the new Brookfield location.

With a soft opening on March 10, The Urban Mutt Brookfield began offering shoppers the same niche organic and specialty foods, one-of-a-kind toys and dog supplies.

With six employees who rotate between both locations, Lopez says The Urban Mutt will continue to strive to build a rapport with its clients.

“You’re going to get a better level of service here, people are going to get to know you and your dog and ask questions about

the things that you need, and if you have problems you want to solve, we’re going to work to find solutions for you and your pet,” he said.

While The Urban Mutt’s clients come from all over the western suburbs and southwest side of Chicago, Lopez and Gaspar — who live in Oak Lawn — say they love the classic hometown feel of Brookfield.

“We wanted to give the Brookfield location that corner-store feel,” Gaspar said.

“Here, it seems like people like to keep the community feel together and really promote local businesses. I think that helps a lot.”

In the upcoming months, Lopez and Gaspar hope to get involved in community events, including farmers markets, parades and others, as well as hosting their own street festival-style events.

The Urban Mutt Brookfield plans on hosting an official grand opening celebration sometime in May, announcing the exact date and details on its Facebook page, facebook.com/theurbanmuttbrookfield.

Side street project kicks off in May; Shields and Washington later this summer The village of Brookfield plans to improve more than a mile of village streets this summer, with the first phase of the work kicking off early next month in the central part of the village.

On April 11, trustees awarded a roughly $2.96 million construction contract to J. Nardulli Concrete to resurface the following streets: ■ Arthur Avenue from Monroe Avenue to 31st Street ■ Sherman Avenue from Maple to Park ■ Sheridan Avenue from Maple to Sunnyside ■ Sunnyside Avenue from Grand to Washington The contract also includes resurfacing Grant Avenue from Grand Boulevard to Forest Avenue and widening Grant Avenue by seven feet between Sunnyside and Prairie. The final part of the contract calls for Nardulli to install a new 8-inch water main under the south sidewalk along 26th Place from Maple Avenue to Forest Avenue.

Nardulli submitted the sole bid for the work, according to Village Engineer Derek Treichel, which is unusual for Brookfield which typically gets between three and six bids for such work.

Some contractors, he said, may have been wary about locking in prices in a market where construction materials are seeing volatility. This particular project also was not attractive to asphalt contractors due to that material accounting for just 15 percent of the cost.

Nardulli’s original bid was actually more than $3 million, but they agreed to discount the price by $102,000 if Brookfield awarded the contract by April 11. Elected officials agreed to the deal fearing that waiting to rebid the work would result in even higher prices or a delay of the work until next year.

The work starting in May will also include replacement of deteriorated sections of curb and gutter. Work on this phase of the project should wrap up around mid-August.

Treichel also informed the village board that two other roadwork projects not expected to be on this year’s schedule have been moved up and will take place later this summer.

to get these funds,” Treichel said.

The Shields Avenue project will likely break ground in early July and wrap up in the fall. Brookfield will receive $652,400 in federal funds, which represents 80 percent of the $815,500 cost for the work. The village will use motor fuel tax revenues to cover its share.

Treichel also was informed that the Washington Avenue resurfacing project also was awarded federal funding by the Central Council of Mayors. That project will be bid

by IDOT in June and work will begin in early September, wrapping up before the end of 2022.

here has rightly been discussion about the allegations that a former Fenwick student made last fall against a longtime teacher, which Oak Park police investigated, and that the Cook County State’s Attorney declined to bring charges, saying the statute of limitations had expired.

What the we’ve reported out of that police investigation, though, is more compelling still as it reflects on a pervasive disregard for the well-being of its students displayed by Fenwick High School over a decade.

The Oak Park detective conducting the probe last fall asked for and obtained the personnel file for John Quinn, the faculty member at the center of this swirl of allegations of improper behavior toward female and male students over decades.

In that file it was reported that school leaders had received complaints between October 2012 and May 2015 about Quinn “putting his arm around students, putting his face close to theirs, back rubbing and shoulder massages that made students feel uncomfortable,” said the detective’s report.

Police also noted there had been “a previous DCFS case against Quinn.”

We’d note that it was in this time frame that Quinn, a highly successful basketball coach at the school, was removed from that post without any logical explanation. Was that Fenwick’s timid attempt at disciplining Quinn? We’ll never know because Fenwick and its Dominican order, like so many Catholic institutions, has been stonewalling on other cases of appalling sexual misconduct against children by powerful adults for decades.

The school, doing a lame job of crisis control, claims it has undertaken a thoroughgoing and independent investigation of the charges against Quinn. A school spokesperson told the Journal there is no “specific timeline” for the investigation to wrap up. And it likely needs to be extended, as the brave testimony of former students Helen Quinn Pasin and Emma Seavey has encouraged other Fenwick students to come forward with their own personal stories.

So far this has led Fenwick to suspend Quinn from teaching.

And in communications to the Fenwick community, the school has said it is prepared to act “promptly and transparently” once the investigation is complete.

We doubt that.

There is no evidence that the school has ever taken the many allegations seriously, has ever simply trusted the sincere testimonies of its students, has had the inclination to actively separate Quinn from those who have lodged complaints against him.

Why should we believe that the school will now be either prompt or transparent? That will need to be proven to us, to the community, to the young people brave enough to come forward.

Nothing beats riding that first bike

E

veryone remembers getting their first bicycle. My first one was a blue Schwinn purchased at Art’s Bike Shop on 22nd Street in Berwyn, equipped with a basket and a bell.

Bikes have progressed a lot since my first ride and since my kids’ first bikes.

Bike riding in our area has always been very popular. A picture of an early Riverside policeman, Charlie Lang, has him with a bike, the early mode of transportation for police, hard to use to apprehend those in need of being apprehended.

Children in Riverside would attend a Bike Rodeo put on by the police who taught youngsters about bike safety and how to be a good bike rider. Children would have their bike’s engraved with a serial number in the event it went missing by whatever means. Police also were known to pass out “tickets” to a local ice cream or candy store to those seen as exemplary good bike riders.

There was also a bike store in Riverside where Sip and Sweets in the Arcade Building is now located. It was run by Rich Grove whose family was the “G” in the local O-G Cab Company. He could fix bikes better than many a parent, who were glad to have him do it.

Though I’m not quite sure of bike etiquette there are a number of serious bike riders who wind their way through Riverside, and I guess they don’t have to stop at stop signs. Many are conscious of the fact there are also cars on the street and will sometimes line up 2 abreast or single file. Their attire indicates

a club or just a uniform that is comfortable for the ride, ever accompanied by the needed water bottle to stay hydrated. They look intense and I admire them. Early morning treks through town seem to be the best time. The rides rarely start in Riverside with our area being a drive-thru, coming down Longcommon, and out they go, appreciative of any communities that have areas designated for bikes.

Now, with the warmer weather coming (I hope), Riverside will have a new bike shop in town to assist riders in many ways. It will be a far cry from the original Riverside Bike Shop but a welcome addition. Watch for it when it appears at the Riverside Train Station.

Some things I like to see: youngsters wearing helmets and watching while riding in the streets or crossing streets. Cars have to watch for you but you have to watch for cars. How about only one person on a bike unless it’s a tandem. Lock your bike when you go in someplace, and particularly use the bike racks.

People need to walk on the sidewalks, too. Make sure you have adequate lighting so you can be seen, very important.

So good luck to the new bike shop group and all avid bike riders. They say you never forget how to ride a bike, but in my case, I’m not sure that’s true and won’t be testing it. If I do, would you happen to have a set of training wheels handy? Of course they do make 3-wheelers for adults, but I don’t think so.

I do remember having fun as a kid on my bike.

R-B girls soccer win is music to their ears Pre-game ritual returns, just in time for upset

As fourth-year varsity players, seniors Amanda DiForti and Carmen Guerrero knew pre-game music was an unofficial ritual before Riverside-Brookfield girls soccer matches, especially home ones.

That temporarily changed last season.

“Sometimes [the speaker] works. Someone dropped it,” DiForti said.

Luckily, the speaker came to life before the Bulldogs’ April 5 home game against perennial power St. Francis.

And so did the Bulldogs.

“Someone just started blasting music and it ended up being a dance party,” said junior Lena Lembcke.

The Bulldogs translated that energy into the highlight of this season to date — an emotional 2-0 Metro Suburban Conference victory.

R-B (4-6-2) lost to St. Francis 5-0 in last season’s Class 2A sectional quarterfinals.

DiForti and Guerrero especially remember their 7-0 regular-season defeat as freshmen.

“When we beat them, Carmen and I looked at each other and we were like, ‘We did it. We did it!’” DiForti said. “And we both started tearing up. It was a very big moment for us.”

“The way we played together and as a team was just amazing. I’ll never forget that last second and everyone running on the field and being so happy,” Guerrero said. “We had our fans in the stands. It was so loud and so great. One hundred percent the greatest victory in the four years I’ve been here.”

The Bulldogs’ four captains — secondyear captains DiForti and Guerrero, senior Reagan Peschke and Lembcke — hope this sets the tone for more great memories.

DiForti, Guerrero and Lembcke have been varsity starters since they were freshmen.

Peschke joined the varsity halfway through her freshman year. “[I like] the camaraderie that we all have.

“I hope I’ve helped show that the soccer team at R-B is a group of really great girls and added to the bonding we all share.”

Guerrero (offensive midfield), DiForti (defensive midfield) and defender Lembcke have been keys in the center of the field. At 5-foot10, Peschke has found goalie to be a perfect fit.

“I think that being tall gives you a greater range in goal, and I think I’m perhaps a little intimidating,” she said.

As a captain, Guerrero likes to organize events, such as breakfasts after Saturday morning practices or bowling to celebrate coach Ivek Halic’s birthday.

There are postgame meals at Irish Times Pub & Restaurant, where DiForti works.

DiForti also encourages group breathing ex-

ercises and gravity stretches, which can become humorous.

“Especially the younger girls, the freshmen — I’ve tried to take them under my wing, talk to them and feel welcome on our team,” Guerrero said.

Leading scorers are junior Natalie Rubi (4 goals) and junior Nina Bretz and sophomores Hazel Hall and Niamh Larson (3 goals each).

Against St. Francis, Bretz and Rubi scored with assists from DiForti and Bretz.

Peschke (15 saves) and defenders Lembcke, junior Jessica Sharenow, sophomore Cassidy Erb and freshman Lucy Drenth achieved another of the team’s six shutouts.

“It was definitely challenging,” Peschke said. “I’m really grateful we have strong defenders who make me feel more confident.”

DiForti, who leads the Bulldogs with seven assists, was lost to a torn ACL and meniscus in her left knee during the 5-0 home victory over Elmwood Park April 12.

She will undergo surgery May 3.

“One of my biggest things as a captain was just being prepped [together] for the game mentally. I’m going to be there for my team as best as I can,” DiForti said.

The Bulldogs are 2-0-1 in their last three games, also beating Marian Catholic 6-0 April 10.

They hope to continue the momentum.

And they plan to continue the pre-game dance parties.

“Those have really stuck with me because I feel we’re hyped up and we come out all ready to play,” Lembcke said. “That’s a core memory of mine with my team.”

Historic victory for girls track & field in Lemont R-B baseball win streak extended to 9

The Riverside-Brookfield girls track & field team enjoyed a historic team victory at the Lemont Invitational Saturday.

“We have not [done this before] in the eight years that I have been here,” R-B coach Ian Robins said.

The Bulldogs earned event titles from junior Ava Connerty (100-meter high hurdles, 17.51) and the 1,600 relay with senior Ashley Vazquez and junior Lily Kocourek, Joaliz Rodriguez and Bryce Pacourek (4:34.81).

Maia Nelson (3,200 in 14:30.22), Pacourek (1,600 in 5:51.92), Rodriguez (300 low hurdles

in 53.44), Gelb (800 in 2:44.14) and the 3,200 relay (Maria Dalton, Kocourek, Gelb, Pacourek, 11:05.19) were second.

Sophie Singh (100 hurdles in 19.36), Antonia O’Keefe (23.53m/77 feet-2 inches, discus), Ashley Vazquez (400 in 1:07.18) and Connerty (300 hurdles, 55.53) were third.

Sean McDermott had 4 runs batted in and one of four doubles by the Bulldogs Thursday. Owen Murphy tallied his 9th home run.

Murphy hit a grand slam en route to 5 RBIs against Chicago Christian. Winning pitcher Jax Giampietro and Peter Styx combined for

a 4-inning 1-hitter.

Jack Niekrasz struck out 6 against Wheaton Academy. Murphy and Ryan Novak homered in the first inning.

R-B softball Sophomore catcher Zoe Levine’s huge week helped the Bulldogs (6-3) defeat York, 11-2, Saturday and St. Francis, 15-7, Thursday.

Levine went 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs and a walk Thursday and 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and a walk Saturday. Levine now is hitting .586 with 4 homers, 21 RBIs and a team-best 17 hits.

R-B boys volleyball Iggy Bielobradek delivered 8 kills as the Bulldogs (10-7) defeated Ridgewood, 25-20, 25-11, April 12.

R-B lost to Downers Grove North, 25-22, 25-21, Monday and Oak Park and River Forest, 26-24, 25-21, Thursday.
