A staff member and a kindergarten student at Hollywood School have both tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days in what may be a case of in-school transmission of the novel coronavirus.

On April 23, Riverside Elementary School District 96 Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye, after being advised to do so by the Cook County Department of Public Health, decided to switch the sole kindergarten class at Hollywood School to remote learning for the next two weeks. It is the first time an entire class in District 96 has been moved to remote learning since last September.

“It is perhaps more than we need to do, but it feels like the right thing to do given the number of students who are quarantine, given their age and the level of activity in the kindergarten class,” Ryan-Toye said.

New Brookfield planner hired, but building director leaving Former intern returns to village hall, Schwarz lands new gig

Brookfield welcomes a new village planner to the Community and Economic Development Department this week, but it’ll also see the departure of the department’s director, who is headed to a new job after just eight months here.

At the April 22 meeting of the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission, Community Development Director Michael Schwarz announced that Kendra Kuehlem would step into the role of village planner as of April 26, filling a vacancy created by the departure of Elyse Vukelich to Oregon in February.

After the meeting adjourned, Schwarz informed members of the commission that he was leaving the village April 30 to take on a new job, calling his decision to leave a sad and difficult one, because he has enjoyed his tenure in Brookfield.

Schwarz has been hired to be community and economic development director of Frankfort, a village of about 20,000 that straddles Cook and Will counties about 25 miles directly south of Brookfield.

Schwarz said his new job will present a much shorter commute and keep him closer to family.

“I can’t say enough about the great things going on [in Brookfield],” Schwarz told planning commissioners after their meeting. “You won’t believe some of the projects that are going to be coming shortly, and I’m going to be sad to not be part of them.

Whoever is here in the seat, I’ll be reading articles in the paper and I’ll be following everything, because Brookfield’s on the cusp of some really exciting [transit-oriented development] projects very soon.”

Schwarz becomes the second consecutive community development director to leave Brookfield eight months after being hired.

He arrived in Brookfield last September after being laid off last June from the city of Joliet, where he had served as director of planning for four years.

He replaced Ross Klicker, who left Brookfield after eight months to become community development director in Wheeling.

Both Klicker and Schwarz were veteran city planners with more than 20 years of experience. They both also raised the bar for the village’s Community and Economic Development Department in terms of expertise and experience.

That experience was sought after by other, larger communities. Klicker was recruited for the Wheeling post. While Schwarz didn’t want to get specific about how he learned about his new job, he intimated that he was not actively searching for a job.

Brookfield Village Manager Timothy Wiberg said news of Schwarz’s departure was “frustrating” but that “there’s nothing I can do about market forces and the opportunities out there.”

On April 26, Wiberg announced that instead of hiring an outside consultant to serve as the department’s interim director that job will fall to Assistant Village Manager George Issakoo. The search for Schwarz’s

replacement will begin soon.

“It’s an important position, and we’ll get the right person for the job,” Wiberg said.

New planner has Brookfield tie Kuehlem, the village’s new planner, comes into her new job already familiar with Brookfield.

From June through August 2017, Kuehlem was an intern in the Community and Economic Development Department shortly after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign.

During her time in Brookfield she handled building permit reviews, wrote village communications, familiarized herself with the village’s comprehensive and open space and active transportation plans and completed an exploratory study on a proposed dog park in Ehlert Park.

Kuehlem went on to become associate planner/zoning administrator for the village of Plainfield before landing a job as assistant planner in March 2019 with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP).

Parishioners at St. Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church in Brookfield are one step closer to being able to worship in a new, custom-built church after the members of the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously on April 22 to recommend granting a special use permit and approving consolidating three parcels on land the parish owns at 4301 Prairie Ave., 4309 Prairie Ave. and 4300 Forest Ave. The commission’s decision is advisory and the Brookfield Village Board will have final say over granting the requests, but approval appears likely since the site already houses the parish church and the construction of a new building requires no zoning variations.

St. Nikola Church first approached the village about building a new church on part of the 40,000-square-foot property early in 2020 but withdrew that application -- which asked for variances for height, setbacks and lot coverage -- after planning and zoning commissioners indicated they wouldn’t recommend approval and suggested the parish’s architect revise the plan.

“We realized we were able to make some modifications, and in doing so we did come up with what we thought was an even stronger design for the church,” architect Petko Petrovich of Accolade Design Inc. told commissioners at the April 22 public hearing at the Brookfield Village Hall.

church/hall building and rectory all standing on the property.

“We think of ourselves as a thoughtful group, and we did give you some things to think about last time here,” said Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Charles Grund, who is an architect. “And, it’s appreciated that you’ve taken that into strong consideration and slightly changed the design. I personally think it is better.”

Petrovich has also scaled back the height of the central bell tower, topping the colonnade that forms the west façade of the church, from 48 feet to 33 feet, 6 inches. The dome over the church sanctuary also has been lowered from 41 feet to 35 feet in order to comply with height restrictions in the residential zoning district.

Construction of the new church, which will be located on the southeast corner of the property closer to Forest Avenue, also won’t create any new setback non-conformities, said Brookfield Community Development Director Michael Schwarz.

St. Nikola Church also has an onsite, 28-space parking lot, which is more than enough to accommodate village requirements for churches. The parish plans to convert the existing worship space into Sunday school classrooms and intends on using the adjacent parish hall for Serbian dance classes on Friday evenings.

If in the future church membership and programs require more parking, Petrovich said the parish is exploring some sort of parking sharing agreement with Lincoln School, which is located across Forest Avenue from the site of the new church.

Brookfielder’s car reportedly shot up in Chicago A Brookfield man whose car was allegedly shot up recently while driving in Chicago declined any assistance from Brookfield police after a pedestrian flagged down a Brookfield police officer to report seeing bullet holes in a car parked in the 8600 block of Brookfield Avenue.

The gray BMW 7 Series auto was found riddled with bullet holes on the morning of April 23 by the Brookfield police officer.

The car’s owner, found by police to be living nearby, told the officer he didn’t report the incident to police in Chicago, where the shooting allegedly happened, that no one had been injured in the incident and that he needed no further police assistance.

The officer confirmed there were “several” bullet holes in the rear passenger side door of the vehicle and determined the car’s owner was a Brookfield resident who lived nearby. When the officer contacted the owner, he reportedly told him that he and his friends were driving in the BMW near Lake Shore Drive in Chicago “a few days ago” when a blue SUV pulled up alongside.

The driver of the SUV then allegedly began shooting at the BMW. According to police, the owner of the BMW also declined to have police place a special watch on his residence since the other vehicle didn’t follow him back to Brookfield.

Cops: Man damaged Jeep during blackout A 26-year-old Berwyn man charged with felony criminal damage to property reportedly told police he has no recollection of extensively damaging a gray Jeep Cherokee parked outside a North Riverside bar during the early morning hours of April 19 after a night of drinking alcohol in Berwyn and North Riverside.

Security camera video reportedly showed Ramiro Rodriguez-Roman exit The Sweet Spot, a bar at 2531 Desplaines Ave., whacking the vehicle, which was parked in the lot next to the bar, with a spare car tire for over two minutes after unsuccessfully trying to gain entry to it.

The incident played out over several minutes, during which Rodriguez-Roman allegedly hit someone in the face for refusing to give him a ride home and also got into what police described as “a physical confrontation” with another motorist whose vehicle Rodriguez-Roman apparently attempted to enter while it was moving slowly past him.

Police took Rodriguez-Roman into custody at about 6:20 a.m. after someone in the 2200 block of Burr Oak Avenue called to report someone trying to gain entry to a parked vehicle there.

Aggravated domestic violence Vicente Hernandez Jr. 23, of Riverside, was charged with felony domestic violence, interfering with reporting domestic violence and resisting arrest after he allegedly beat and choked a 36-year-old Stickney woman in front of two children outside a Riverside apartment building in the 2800 block of Harlem Avenue on April 21 at about 8:35 p.m.

Police responded to the scene after receiving several 911 calls, reportedly including from the victim, who kept getting cut off.

When officers arrived they reported observing Hernandez beating the woman, who was half inside and half outside of a vehicle, in an alley behind the building.

The woman was injured, police said, with clumps of hair on the ground, visible bruises about her head, face and arms, red marks around her neck. Police intervened and reportedly fought with Hernandez to get him into custody.

Hernandez and the victim initially got into a verbal argument, police said, which later turned physical. He allegedly slapped the victim’s phone out of her hand twice as she tried calling 911.

Police said Hernandez has been arrested twice previously for domestic battery, in September 2017 in Cicero and in March 2021 in Summit, an incident that reportedly involved the same victim. That case was dropped after the victim missed a court date, police said.

Brookfield church damaged, again For the second time in a month, someone has vandalized Faith Lutheran Church, 3801 Madison Ave., again damaging the sign board and hurling a hanging planter pole with a hooked end through the window of the church office door.

Police believe the incident happened late on April 21, around the same time a security camera captured video of a person with long hair dressed in dark clothing damaging a fence and vehicle in the same general vicinity.

The first instance of vandalism at the church happened sometime between April 2-4, when someone broke the glass protecting the sign board and pushed over a food pantry drop box at the church.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, April 19-25 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Riversiders outpacing neighbors in getting vaccinated 40.6% of residents there completely inoculated, 69.4% have at least 1 shot

With COVID-19 vaccinations opening up earlier this month to anyone 16 and older, the Cook County Department of Public Health is also now tracking the rate at which residents of individual municipalities are being inoculated, and the results vary widely, even for towns right next to each other.

Riverside residents, for example, have been fully vaccinated at a much higher rate than their counterparts in Brookfield, North Riverside and Berwyn and at more than twice the rate of those in Lyons.

As of April 26, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health, 40.6 percent of Riverside residents had completed their vaccinations, compared to 29.1 percent in Brookfield, 21.8 percent in North

Riverside, 24.2 percent in Berwyn and 19.8 percent in Lyons.

LaGrange (33.3 percent) and LaGrange Park (33.1 percent) also had rates higher than many of their neighbors in other communities.

The data was similar for the percentage of residents having had at least one COVID-19 shot. Again, Riverside was far ahead of its neighbors at 69.4 percent. In LaGrange and LaGrange Park, 56.4 percent and 53.6 percent of residents, respectively, had received at least one shot.

In Brookfield, 47.9 percent of residents had received at least one shot as of April 26, compared to 33.5 in North Riverside, 35.1 percent in Lyons and 41.6 percent in Berwyn.

Meanwhile, the number of new COVID-19 cases reported during the week-long period ending on the morning of April 27 remained similar to those seen in recent weeks. No new fatal cases of COVID-19 were reported in Brookfield, North Riverside or Riverside.

There were 36 new cases reported in Brookfield, the first weekly decrease since March 23, while Riverside saw its number of cases bounce back up last week, from 6 to 13.

North Riverside saw six new cases, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health, just a tick up from last week’s five new cases.

t this time, unless Congress acts, the current lifetime estate tax exemption amount of $11,580,000 is set to sunset in 2025, which means that in 2026 it will revert to $5,000,000 per person, adjusted for inflation. Many clients want to take advantage of gifting the difference between the amounts, $6,580,000 before it is gone. Some families are making outright gifts to children to purchase a vacation home so they can leave the crowded cities or to start up a new business.

However, in this economic environment, not all clients are ready to make an outright gift, but wish they could transfer some of their wealth. Some have already utilized their estate tax exemption amount, but wish they could somehow transfer more wealth without incurring a gift tax. Other families still have all or a portion of their estate tax exemption amount, but just don’t feel comfortable

transferring funds until the economy sorts itself out.

Last summer, the IRS released recordlow Applicable Federal Rates (AFR). 17% of RBHS students failed a class in third quarter

Principal says there’s ‘plenty of time’ to pull up semester grades

Seventeen percent of Riverside-Brookfield High School students failed at least one class in the third quarter of the 2020-21 academic year, a much higher failure rate than in past years.

In the quarter that ended in March, 282 RBHS students received a total of 596 Fs for final third-quarter grades. That’s about 30 percent more Fs than were handed out in last year’s third quarter when 418 failing grades were awarded. During the third quarter of the 2018-19 school year, 385 Fs were given out and 402 Fs in 2017-18.

“We’re a little higher than previous years,” RBHS Principal Hector Freytas told the school board at its April 13 meeting when he discussed the failure rate.

Hispanic and Black students earned a dis-

proportionate number of the failing grades.

Hispanic students, who account for about 37 percent of all RBHS students, received 47 percent of all failing grades in the third quarter.

Black students, who account for nearly 5 percent of all RBHS students, received 8.5 percent of all Fs. White students, who account for about 53 percent of all RBHS students, received 40.6 percent of all failing grades.

Freytas said the school is taking action to help students who failed classes in the third quarter improve their grades so that they can get a passing semester grade. These steps include getting students who failed classes in the third quarter to come to school more often, pulling struggling students out of wellness or elective classes for extra help in reading and math, dean visits to the homes of disengaged students and perhaps lessening the course loads of failing students. Messages were sent to every senior who failed a class in the third quarter.

Last fall, Freytas sounded the alarm bells when he reported in November that 35 percent of RBHS students were on track for failing at least one class for the first semester. However, the final first semester failure rate ended up

much lower.

Only 7.3 percent of students ultimately failed a first-semester class after students were given a chance to improve their grades in the second quarter.

Third-quarter gradebooks are closed, Freytas told the school board, but the school policy this year is that no student can receive a grade of lower than 50 percent on any assignment, even if they don’t turn anything in. As a result, Freytas said, students can do enough in the fourth quarter to receive a passing semester grade.

“Guys you can pass, you have plenty of time,” Freytas said at the school board meeting in a message to students.

There will be no final exams in the second semester, just as there were no final exams in the first semester, so students will need to complete regular assignments to pass classes.

In-person attendance at RBHS has been slowly increasing, but it remains below where many school officials have been hoping it would be.

Freytas told the school board that about 500 students are attending school in person, which would be nearly 33 percent of all students, compared to just 200 students earlier in

School leaders, teachers need to ‘understand their own internal bias’

Two Black Riverside-Brookfield High School students implored the District 208 Board of Education to do more to combat racism and promote inclusion at the school in public comments made at the school board’s April 13 meeting.

Senior Tirza Elliott and freshman Raven McKelvin said school needs to do much more than it has to doing.

“It’s about addressing the school’s lack of understanding of their own internal bias and how it affects the children they teach daily,” Elliott said.

Elliott said during her four years at RBHS she has been harmed by numerous incidents of conscious and unconscious bias. Teachers, she said, ought to undergo anti-bias training.

During her freshman year, Elliott said, two students took her food from her lunch box, ate it and then threw the garbage at her as a teacher looked on and did nothing.

“I am a visible or assumed ill-adjusted just because of my looks.” Elliott said.

During her sophomore year, Elliott said she

was sitting with some other Black students in the back of the auditorium during an assembly when a teacher told the Black students to not to “get like church back there.”

On Jan. 7 this year, during a class discussion about the insurrection at the United States Capitol the previous day, Elliott was upset when her teacher did nothing after a white student said the assault on the capitol was not as bad as what happened last summer referring the civil unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd.

“Four years of constant, subtle and blatant racist behavior has changed me,” Elliott said. “I showed up here with an open mind and heart, willing to learn and be molded.

What I got was blatant ignorance, dismissed and harmed by biased adults.

“I leave here with some fond memories, as it wasn’t all bad, but I have some seriously damaging ones.”

McKelvin, the leader of RBHS’s Minority Empowerment Club, said RBHS should do more to make Black students feel more at home.

“I feel like a lot of minorities are not represented enough at this school, especially Blacks,” McKelvin said. “Although we have a meeting every now and then, I feel like the administration and teachers can do more for students to help them feel included. I would like to see more teachers and administrators that look like me at this school. I also feel like this school should be able to do basic

gestures, such as hang up posters of good awareness and phrases that shouldn’t be used.”

McKelvin said she doesn’t see enough people who look like herself at the school or on the walls.

“Right now white students walk down the hall and see art and pictures that represents them, [but] Black students don’t have any art here,” McKelvin said. “It makes me feel like, sometimes, I’m invisible.”

Just under 5 percent of RBHS students are Black, while approximately 37 percent are Hispanic and 53 percent are white, according to the latest state figures.

McKelvin said that African-American history and culture should be embedded into the RBHS curriculum.

“When will I be able to represent my culture, when will I be able to learn about my history and, mostly, when will I feel like my culture is represented and welcomed in this school?” McKelvin asked.

McKelvin said the school should represent Black and other cultures.

“This is something that should be supported by the school,” McKelvin said. “There are ways to incorporate history and diversity into all classes at RB, there are ways to make our building art and decorations more diverse. I am asking you, the school board, to be willing to invest time and resources to improve this at RB. We need to make everyone at this school feel welcome.”

Despite the third quarter’s high failure rate most students at RBHS are getting good grades.

The Brookfield Village Board is expected to concur with an April 22 Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to approve consolidating two lots in the 3700 block of Grand Boulevard into one parcel, setting the stage for another new mixed-use development in downtown Brookfield.

Planning and zoning commissioners unanimously recommended consolidating 3736 and 3738 Grand Blvd., which are both owned by Victoriano and Guadalupe Garcia. The Garcias own Brookfield Upholstery, which once was located at 3738 Grand Blvd. and is now on Ogden Avenue.

Grand Blvd. building since 1998 and the twostory 3738 Grand Blvd. building since 2003. The two storefronts house Strive 4 Fitness and Emerald Bay Jewelry.

The Landmark was unable prior to this week’s print deadline to get specific details about what’s being planned for the property, once the consolidation happens, but a memo concerning the property consolidation considered last week by the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission states the consolidation is necessary “in order to build a new mixed-use building in place of the two existing buildings.”

tor Michael Schwarz told commissioners that the development was to be three stories tall.

Schwarz later told the Landmark he did not have further details about the development and that the Garcias had not submitted any building permit applications.

If it moves forward, the new development would be the second new mixed-use development proposed for the downtown in past two years. The other, a three-story development featuring 17 one-bedroom apartments and a ground-floor storefront, is being constructed at 3704 Grand Blvd.

After a one-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Circo Hermanos Vazquez returns to the east parking lot of the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, from April 30 through May 24.

The Circo Hermanos Vazquez, which has units that tour both Mexico and the United States, was a hit during its first swing through North Riverside, drawing thousands of visitors during its 40-show residence in April 2019.

“It’s like a brand new start,” said Glenn Lindholm, general manager of North Riverside Park Mall on the circus’ return. “It’s a good event for us and it’s a good event for the community.”

While it’s difficult to know just how much additional foot traffic the family-friendly circus brought to the mall, the village reported taking in gross revenues of about $38,500 in 2019 mainly via North Riverside’s amusement tax, which takes a 5-percent cut on all ticket sales.

The village also derived revenue from its places for eating tax through the sale of food and drinks at the circus.

Circo Hermanos Vazquez has scheduled 36 shows this time around – they won’t be offering a matinee performance on Saturdays – but they will perform daily. From Monday to Friday, shows are at 7:30 p.m. On Saturdays, there are two shows, at 5 and 8 p.m. On Sun-

days, the circus hosts three performances, at 2, 5 and 8 p.m.

Tickets are not cheap – general admission for kids 2-10, seniors, military and disabled are $25, while adult general admission is $30.

There is also preferred seating for adults that can go as high as $60 per ticket, but if you order online through the circus’ website (circovazquez.com) there are discounts.

Circo Hermanos Vazquez’s vivid pink and blue big top tent will be located south of Olive Garden/Miller’s Ale House in the mall’s east parking lot, and signs will direct vehicles and visitors where to go.

While the circus will again feature a range of performers, from dancers to trapeze artists to clowns, there are some changes in 2021.

The circus no longer includes animals, and in recognition of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, inside the big top both audience members and workers must wear face coverings.

In addition, the circus is limiting attendance to 50 percent for each show, with family groups spaced at least six feet apart from one another. Before each show, workers will sanitize inside the big top and there will be hand-sanitizing stations and other health precautions taken where food and souvenirs are purchased.

In 2019, two circuses visited North Riverside Park Mall – a more adult-themed show took up residence there in August – but Lindholm said Circo Hermanos Vazquez will be the only circus coming to the shopping center this year.

D96 awards contract for Hollywood School addition, playground $1.6 million project will be completed this summer

Hollywood School in Brookfield is finally going to get a new playground as well as a multipurpose room.

On April 21 the Riverside Elementary District 96 Board of Education unanimously accepted bids totaling about $1.6 million to build a new 1,450-square-foot addition to the back end of the school and to build a new playground on land the district is leasing from Hollywood Citizens Association (HCA).

The new multipurpose alone room will cost $1,303,000 plus another $16,000 for operable windows. The room will be used as a lunchroom, for band and orchestra classes and as a large group space. Currently, Hollywood School students eat lunch in the school’s gym. Hollywood has been the only elementary school in the district without a multipurpose room.

“It’s so exciting for Hollywood, not just the school but the entire community,” said Hollywood School Principal Kim Hefner. “It’s going to open up a lot of doors and a lot of space and add a lot more flexibility to what we can do.”

The school board had initially wanted to build the new multipurpose room last year as part of the work being done at the district’s other elementary schools, but problems in working out a lease deal with the HCA resulted in delaying the project for a year.

Last year estimated cost for building the multipurpose room was $1.2 million as part of a contract that included work at Ames and Blythe Park Schools. As a result, the delay will cost the district approximately $100,000 as it is losing the economies of scale.

“I don’t think we should be paying $100,000 more,” said school board member David Barsotti, a resident of the Hollywood neighborhood who has been critical of the HCA. “I think we should pass that on to the HCA, but I know we can’t do that.”

But board members were happy to finally approve the project.

“My first meeting six years ago we talked about Hollywood,” said board member Lynda Murphy. “This is six years in the making. I’m so excited we’re getting going.”

The multipurpose room and playground will be built this summer. The new playground will cost $292,000 and replace the existing small playground situated between the school parking lot and the Hollywood Community House. The new playground will not be quite as fancy as some previous plans.

The playground will cover about 5,000 square feet and use a wood fiber surface. It will include will include swings, play structures for climbing, spinning, sliding and balancing structures and outdoor musical instruments. There will also be a zip line.

“We did reduce the scope of the playground to narrow its focus a little bit, which we think was good and effective and gets Hollywood where it needs to be in terms of a playground place,” said board member Joel Marhoul, who co-chairs the school board’s facilities committee.

EXPANDING: The new playground at Hollywood School will be built this summer on land owned by the Hollywood Citizens Association and will be much larger than the tiny playground that exists now.

The multipurpose room and playground will be built by Apex Construction Company of Chicago, which submitted the low bid among six bidders.

The new multipurpose room will reduce the size of the existing onsite parking lot, but the school district has reached an agreement with the village of Brookfield to allow for some staff parking on Hollywood Avenue during the school day. The district has also agreed to rent 10 parking spaces in Brookfield Zoo’s south parking lot for an annual cost of around $9,500.

Blythe space crunch on radar Board members said that the district now needs to turn its attention to Blythe Park School, which is in the midst of transitioning from a one-section-per-grade school to a two sections per grade.

Presently, there are two sections of kindergarten, first grade and second grade at Blythe Park and is likely to have two sections in every grade in less than three years. The school has 12 classrooms.

“We need to do something there relatively quickly,” said board member Jeff Miller who

was attending his final full board meeting.

Any future work at Blythe Park would probably involve reconfiguring the school’s lowerlevel auditorium, which could be expensive because of its sloping floor. In the past some Blythe Park parents have opposed turning the auditorium into classroom space.

New sprinklers at Central School The board also approved a bid of just over $1 million to replace the fire sprinkler system at Central School this summer. Last year while constructing the new multipurpose room in the Central School basement, it was discovered that the sprinkler system, which is more than 60 years old, was not working properly.

Since the system was so old and antiquated the Riverside Fire Department recommended replacing the entire system with a new one.

The school board voted unanimously to accept a bid of $1,050,000 from Tandem Construction of Chicago for the work. The bid includes a $100,000 contingency for any unexpected miscellaneous work that needs to be done putting in the new system. Any part of the contingency that is not spent will be returned to the district.

RBHS to host outdoor prom at Hyatt Lodge

In-person graduations also planned at both high schools

Seniors at Riverside-Brookfield High School will have the chance to go to a prom this year -- something of a masked ball since face coverings will be required.

Last week school officials announced that it will hold a senior-only prom on May 27, the night before graduation, on an outdoor patio at the Hyatt Lodge hotel in Oak Brook on the scenic former McDonald’s campus.

“Obviously our seniors have missed out on a lot of opportunities throughout their senior year and so we wanted to have kind of a cul-

minating event that was safe but also had an opportunity for them to get together with their classmates and to celebrate each other as they head toward graduation,” said Dave Mannon, the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs at RBHS. Only RBHS seniors will be allowed to attend the prom. No one who is not a RBHS student, including dates, will be allowed to attend.

The class of 2021 missed out on prom last year, homecoming this fall and many other milestone events and many seniors have been getting COVID vaccinations shots recently, so a good percentage of the prom-goers are likely to be fully inoculated by the time of the prom. Face masks will be required and social distancing will be enforced, or at least encouraged, at the prom.

If it rains, the prom will be moved indoors at the Hyatt Lodge where there will be multiple

rooms available to encourage social distancing.

“The Hyatt’s been amazing,” Mannon said.

“They are going to allow us to pretty much have use of all their indoor venues.”

Students will be required to get to and from the prom on their own unlike in recent years when the school provided, and required, bus transportation to the prom. When students purchase their $75 prom tickets, they will be required to sign a liability waiver.

School officials had been considering holding the prom, or some type of gathering, at the RBHS football stadium, but many students feel that an off-campus location will make the prom a special event.

“I know that a lot of kids are happy that it’s ending up at the Hyatt this year,” said senior Isabella Linarez. “If it was at RB, I’m not sure how excited they would have been.

“It’s like one of the last senior experiences and I didn’t get a prom experience last year so I just kind of want to have one.”

For the second consecutive year, Lyons Township High School will not have a prom.

Instead LTHS will host a special event for seniors that school officials are calling Lyonspalooza which will take place on Sunday, May 16 at LTHS’s South Campus.

There will be two sessions the first from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and the second from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Attendance at each session will be limited to 450 students and students can sign up for only one session. Tickets will cost just $5 due to contributions from the Parent Teacher Council, LT Boosters, the teachers union, and the student council.

Lyonspalooza will include food trucks providing free food, activities and Bennett Field will be open to students.

Food pantry fundraiser mixes folk music, poetry Carl Sandburg’s work inspired Brookfield musician’s show

Share Food Share Love Food Pantry, located at Faith Lutheran Church, 3801 Madison Ave., has been a presence in Brookfield for five years. They serve between 300-350 families each month, but that number has been growing during the pandemic, according to board member Linda Dumas, who spoke at a livestream fundraiser for the nonprofit, which is an agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

“Everyone needs help once in a while,” she said. And the number of families coming to the food pantry for help has been growing during the pandemic.”

Last week, the food pantry offered up a creative Zoom fundraiser, partnering with the nonprofit Music and Potlucks for an evening of entertainment with folk musician Mark Dvorak, who lives in Brookfield.

The theme of the program on Monday, April 19, was “The People, Yes,” based on Carl Sandburg’s 1936 epic poetry book.

Besides reading Sandburg’s poetry, Dvorak played folk music composed by Sandburg from his 1927 “The American Songbag.” Dvorak explained that Sand-

burg would give a poetry reading and end the night with one of his folk songs.

Last week, the banjo-strumming singer played a variety of Sandburg songs from silly to sublime. The more than 20 in attendance bobbed their heads to the music and, at times, sang along, although on mute.

Dvorak’s admiration for the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and musician was evident.

“I’ve been reading Carl since high school,” he said. “His book ‘The American Songbag’ was the first published collection of folk songs in America. It’s been on my shelf for years and years. ‘The American Songbag’ was a key resource to the early years of the folk revival in the 1950s and 60s.”

Because April is National Poetry Month, Dvorak suggested the Sandburg-themed program. He said he picked up a copy of “The Collected Poems of Carl Sandburg” about 25 years ago. Dvorak said he has “found [Sandburg’s] images and rhythms to be totally infectious.”

“I fell upon ‘The People, Yes’ sometime in the early 2000s and was really struck by it and decided to develop a program of songs, poems and stories based upon it,”

Dvorak said. “Carl is an Illinoisan and spent a number of years in the Chicago area. He and his wife lived for a short time in Elmhurst before moving back to the city. He’s an interesting individual and an important artist. I’m amazed how well his verses and songs resonate all these years later.”

The event was free to attend and was sponsored by the Songs for Peace & Justice Fund.

Music and Potlucks has put on more than 40 events in four years and Dvorak is their resident artist. Dvorak is a recording artist, working on his 19th CD release, as well as a traveling musician and long-time teacher at Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

“The best principals put their heart and soul into creating an elite school culture and climate and being present and visible within the school community,” Tyrrell said. “The best principals are not just school and district leaders but truly are community leaders. I intend to be that leader.”

Tyrrell was chosen from a field of 40 applicants, seven of whom were interviewed and three of whom were finalists.

Waterman said Tyrrell’s experience as a classroom teacher, division chair, associate principal and principal will ensure a smooth transition into her role at LTHS. “She knows the power and importance of student voice, and I look forward to seeing her empower our student body to be leaders in our school and community,” Waterman said.

“I feel that that COVID-19 is a public health crisis,” Barsotti said. “We finally have something that helps mitigate and eventually eliminate this pandemic, and so I think it’s in everyone’s best interest to get vaccinated.”

Barsotti implored all district students and staff to participate in the saliva testing.

“I do feel that everyone in this district should participate in the saliva screening, because that is going to be instrumental in stopping any type of in school transmission,” Barsotti said. “We have to get this virus under control and part of that is participating in that saliva screening.”

Board member Jeff Miller, who is leaving the school board next month, was outraged that a staff member would DAN HUNT refuse to get vacciD96 school board president nated and still come to work and interact with kids.

“No one has the right to jeopardize the health and safety of our students and other staff members by coming in when they’re not vaccinated,” Miller said. “And not only the health of our students, but also their families.

“And, on top of that, now we have a situation where we had to shut down an entire classroom so we’re also jeopardizing the education of these kids. I don’t know what the legality is but on the question of right and wrong, I feel very strongly that this is not right.”

Saliva test flagged student from page 1 ber tested positive on April 21 and learned of the student’s positive result the next day.

District 96 did not release the name of the employee who tested positive, but the employee reportedly is exhibiting symptoms.

Ryan-Toye said the classroom’s teacher will be providing instruction remotely to her 16 kindergarten students for the next two weeks. Eight students have been told to quarantine as a result of exposure to the individuals who tested positive.

District officials say that they are not sure if the staff member infected the student.

“I don’t think the staff member exposed the classroom,” Hefner said. “We have a staff member who contracted COVID and we have a kindergartner also with COVID.” But, Ryan-Toye said it is possible.

“I will say for the first time I have wondered about possible in-school transmission,” Ryan-Toye said.

Ryan-Toye said that she was not sure how long the infected staff member interacted with students.

The staff member who has tested positive is apparently one of the very few staff members in District 96 who has not received a COVID-19 vaccination. Ryan-Toye would not confirm or deny that, but the Landmark learned that information from a District 96 official.

More than 90 percent of the certified staff in District 96 have been vaccinated and only about 10 staff members have not been inoculated. Ryan-Toye said the district has been advised by its attorney that it cannot require employees to be vaccinated, but officials are further studying the issue.

The district has strongly encouraged staff members to get vaccinated and to participate in a saliva screening test and continues to do so.

“We’re at a very high percentage, but we’re not at all,” Ryan-Toye said. “We keep encouraging people to get vaccinated. Availability has really opened up so that is not our issue.”

Ryan-Toye said she didn’t know if the infected staff member has been participating in the saliva screening test, but the kindergarten student who tested positive was identified through the saliva test. That student then took a diagnostic test that confirmed it.

District 96 school board President Dan Hunt said the district had been advised it could not require employees to be vaccinated. Private employers can apparently require that employees be vaccinated before coming to work in person. But, Hunt said it was concerning that a staff member may have infected a student.

“I have a kid in kindergarten myself at Blythe, not at Hollywood,” Hunt said. “It’s definitely concerning. It would be my preference for the teachers and staff working with my kids that they were fully vaccinated but it’s their option if they don’t want to.

I can respect their choice in that regard.”

Board member David Barsotti said that he believes everyone should be vaccinated but wasn’t sure if the district can or should require it.

ust in the past week the Cook County Department of Public Health has begun tracking online the rate at which residents of suburban Cook County are being vaccinated against COVID-19.

The data reveals that Riverside trails only North brook, Barrington and Palos Park in the percentage of residents having obtained at least one COVID-19 vaccine and is among the top six suburbs where residents have been fully vaccinated.

Yet, just across the village’s borders, the numbers tell a different story. Just 19.8 percent of Lyons residents, 21.8 percent of North Riverside residents and 29.1 Brookfield residents have been fully vaccinated.

So, no matter where you live, we need to guard against complacency when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic and employers, friends and family members should be encouraging those they interact with to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

With many vaccine clinics now accepting walk-ins, it is incumbent on all of us to step up and get fully vaccinated.

We’ve been moaning for a year now about wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, avoiding crowds. This is how we can begin ending those things, but everyone needs to get with the program.

Just how fragile all of this is was demonstrated last week when a staff member and a kindergarten student at Hollywood School both tested positive for COVID-19 within a day of one another.

We don’t know for certain if the novel coronavirus was transmitted via in-school contact, but it’s a possibility. What does appear certain is that the staff member was not vaccinated, despite those working in schools being able to get vaccinated since January.

At some point, we’re going to need to start requiring people who work in congregate settings like schools to become vaccinated unless there is a compelling reason not to. Millions upon millions of people around the world have received vaccinations, the positivity rates where vaccines have taken hold are falling and there have been very few reports of serious side effects from the vaccines.

In February, Caledonia Senior Living and Memory Care in North Riverside began mandating that its employees become vaccinated or risk not being scheduled for shifts. It was simply facing reality. The nursing home could not risk the health of its elderly residents by allowing caregivers to go unvaccinated.

The employees weren’t let go, but they were told they wouldn’t be scheduled to work until they were inoculated.

No matter how many people believe that their only responsibility is to secure their personal liberty on their own terms, the truth is that we are a community and each of our personal decisions affect those around us.

To put others in jeopardy is irresponsible.

In addition to encouraging everyone to get vaccinated, local, county, state and federal officials need to work harder to get vaccines to populations where inoculations are, for whatever reason, lagging. They are among some of the hardest hit by the pandemic and deserve particular attention and help.

St. Mary pastoral center named for Bishop Lyne

he name on the building at 40 E. Burlington St. in Riverside says “Lyne Pastoral Center.” What’s Lyne? Wasn’t that building a bank?

Yes, it was MidAmerica Bank and then PNC Bank, and now it is the pastoral center – the parish office -- for St. Mary Church, where good things are happening.

The Lyne on the sign was the late Bishop Timothy Joseph Lyne, the son of Irish immigrant parents, born on March 21, 1919. He had two brothers and a sister, was educated in the Chicago Archdiocese Catholic Schools, and attended Quigley Seminary and Mundelein College leading to his ordination as a priest on May 1, 1943.

His first assignment was St. Mary Church in Riverside, where he was an associate priest to the Father

William Murphy, the pastor. To see them was reminiscent of the movie “Going My Way” with Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald.

At the time St. Mary’s comprised the church and attached school building. Across the street sat the rectory for the priests and the convent for the nuns who taught at the school. Both were old Victorian buildings.

In no time, young Father Lyne began to ingratiate himself with his new parishioners and the community. First, he focused on the school, constructing a new school building joined to the original by a breezeway, since removed. He requested there be no tuition increase but asked parishioners to contribute to the support of the school.

Every year he would give the parish financial report, always apologizing for any requests for money. He was the life of the parish while always being respectful of his boss, Father Murphy.

When Father Murphy’s passed, it was believed Father.

Lyne would be pastor, but it didn’t happen, much to the disappointment of all. So after 19 years, he was assigned to St. Edmund Church in Oak Park, where he was associate pastor from 1962-66. His next assignment was Holy Name Cathedral as associate pastor from 1966 to 1967 and then its pastor until 1990. In 1983, he was named Bishop Lyne.

But, Bishop Lyne never really left St. Mary’s. He kept in touch with his many friends and returned for many occasions, including the rededication of the church in 2003, after its renovation.

Because he always remembered everyone’s name, a group of present and past parishioners wanted Bishop Lyne remembered at his first parish. It also gave newer parishioners a chance to know the young priest with the dark wavy hair, smiling eyes and bright smile who left his mark on St. Mary’s. That’s who Lyne is.

William Kasten, 69 Worked in beverage business, home building industry William “Bill” Kasten, 69, who lived in Riverside from birth in 1951 until the 1980s, died March 27 in Columbus, Ohio, his second “hometown.”

A student at St. Mary’s from kindergarten through sixth grade, he graduated from Hauser Junior High and from Riverside-Brookfield High School in 1969. He earned a B.A. in history from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota, and pursued careers in the licensed beverage business and then in the home building industry. He

was also a hobby woodworker.

Known for impromptu parties, Mr. Kasten married former classmate Muretta Strohecker in 1988, and they made their home in Columbus. The two were divorced eventually but remained friends, and Muretta was at his hospital bedside when he passed.

Mr. Kasten is also survived by his sister, Merle Turner, of Dallas. A celebration of Bill’s life is being planned, to be conducted via Zoom.

The Hwang family, who have lived in North Riverside since 2005, has owned the mid-20th century ice cream stand at 7901 Cermak Road for the past 22 years, keeping its vintage look, classic flavors and familial atmosphere constant throughout that time.

Shawn, 28, said his parents were drawn to the ice cream stand as a business opportunity, not only because they are natural entrepreneurs, but because it also reminded them of Taiwan, where they grew up.

“My parents are immigrants from Taiwan, but they’ve always had that entrepreneurial spirit,” said Hwang, adding that his parents were in their late 20s when they immigrated to the U.S. “They saw the opportunity here [at Polar Bear] and asked, and they were selling, so we were there at the right time.

“In Taiwan it’s really hot in the summer, so ice cream was really popular there, so they came here and saw something they were familiar with.”

Jason and Kelly Hwang also like that the ice cream stand maintained its late 1940s vibe – the building housed a flower shop and a candy store before becoming a local institution as a soft-serve ice cream business.

They’ve retained that feel, keeping the neon signs and equipment and dotting the stand with vintage décor. While the iconic polar bear sign is not the original, Hwang said his grandfather used the original sign as a template to saw out a new one many years ago.

Hwang, who attended Hauser Junior High and RiversideBrookfield High School before getting a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and an MBA at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said he grew up at the ice cream stand.

As a middle schooler he remembers going there after school, having a cone and playing with friends in the parking lot. As he entered high school, he started manning the counter, making cones and other treats for customers who’d return year after year.

“People watched me grow up and I’m also watching other people growing up,” said Hwang, who has seen generations of families – grandparents, parents and children – come through the door since he was a middle schooler.

ing to him asking for summer jobs – Polar Bear has long been a summer landing spot for local high school and college kids.

Garrett Foy, who was helping Jason and Shawn Hwang spruce up the place last week in preparation for opening, is a North Riversider who is finishing up his first year in college, but has been working at Polar Bear since he was a sophomore at RBHS. “They come and they say, ‘Do you remember me?’ You used to take my order all the time,’” Hwang said. “And I’m like, ‘That was you, coming in with your mom? My goodness.’”

It’ll be a bit of reunion when Hwang flips the switch on the neon lights May 1. A little more than a year ago, the Hwangs were cleaning up the business, getting it ready to open in April when the COVID-19 pandemic swept through and the business shutdowns began.

By last May, as loyal customers wondered whether they’d be able to savor a funnel cake sundae or some cheese fries, the Hwangs announced on Facebook that they would remain closed.

“Just monitoring everything, we felt like the uncertainty was still in the air,” Hwang said. “And because we serve a community of all ages, we thought that just for everyone’s safety, we’d just hibernate another year.”

When you visit Polar Bear this summer, you’ll notice a few differences. First off, they’ve shortened their hours a bit.

Monday through Friday, Polar Bear will be open 2 to 10 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday hours from 1 to 10 p.m.

Patrons will also be asked to wear face coverings and maintain social distance while waiting in line outside.

There are now blue markings on the pavement giving guidance to those standing along “Polar Bear Drive” as it wraps around the back of the building.

They’re also limiting the number of people inside the tiny order/pickup area, and they’ve erected plastic screens between the customer and the work areas.

“We’re prepared for it,” said Hwang.

The joint review board consists of a representative selected by each community college district, local elementary school district and high school district or each local community unit school district, park district, township, fire protection district and county that will have the authority to directly levy taxes on the property within the Redevelopment Project Area at the time that the Redevelopment Project Area is approved, a representative selected by the Village, and a public member. LTHS volleyball wraps up season with pair of wins Lions down Downers South, OPRF to finish with 9-2 record

The Lyons Township High School girls volleyball team closed out its pandemic-abbreviated season April 22 by defeating host Downers Grove South in three sets.

After winning the first set 25-13 but then dropping the second 19-25, the Lions steamrolled the Mustangs 25-6 in the deciding third set. The victory gave LTHS a final record of 9-2 this spring.

On April 21, the Lions defeated rival Oak Park and River Forest 25-20, 26-24. Afterwards, head coach Jill Keeve was pleased with her team’s showing.

“I think it was a great team effort for our last home match of the season,” said Keeve. “Defensively and with serve-receive, we were doing what we were supposed to be doing. We were able to run a lot of our offense, too.”

LTHS senior Molly Corrough said she was impressed with the Huskies’ standout freshman outside hitter Grace Nelson, who finished the night with 12 kills, nine digs and two aces.

“I was a little nervous going into this game because I knew OPRF had some good [outside hitters] we were looking out for,” said Corrough. “[Nelson] gave us a hard time. We knew about her and [OPRF captain] Chloe Gill and wanted to block them. They had initial success, but we were able to figure things out and put up a good block and defense.”

When it came to LTHS’ offense, the Lions had balance. Tia Kostic led the Lions with seven kills, followed by Kamryn Lee-Caracci with five, Adriana Vassek four and Corrough three.

Overall, Keeve believed the season was a success, despite the fact it wasn’t a normal one with the usual noisy atmosphere absent due to spectator limits.

“The gym has been a little quieter than normal, but the energy from the bench has picked up and made up for it,” she stated. “It’s been great to see our bench get more involved because we don’t have many people in the stands.”

The Riverside-Brookfield High School girls volleyball team’s season came to a close April 24, and although it was not the outcome they would have wanted, there was a lot to be pleased with in the 2021 campaign.

The Bulldogs (5-5) fell to St. Francis (25-20, 25-19) at RBHS, giving them a second-place finish in the conference. Sophomore Kira Conroy, named player of the game, led the team offensively with nine kills on 39 attempts while senior McKenna Sloan anchored the defense with 14 digs. She also earned two service aces.

As the season went on, the girls clicked more and more as a team, said coach Mary Pakosta, and notched victories against Elmwood Park, Bishop McNamara, Ridgewood, Aurora Central Catholic and, on Senior Night, Rosary.

“Throughout the season we really worked together as a team to earn wins that we may not

have last season,” Pakosta said. “Overall, we had a more even record of wins and losses this season. Definitely looking forward to playing more matches.”

Senior defensive-specialist McKenna Sloan, who has started for varsity for three years, led the back line this season with 88 digs, averaging 3.6 per set while also notching nine aces.

Senior outside hitter Annalisa Cinkay, also a three-year starter, was second overall in kills with 36 and had six blocks. Senior middle hitter Abbey Yager had 18 kills and six blocks.

The pandemic resulted unprecedented season, including having to quarantine for a time, Pakosta said she was proud of the way the girls handled the changes and made adjustments.

“Overall, the athletes that participated in volleyball were super flexible,” she said. “They adjusted to their school schedule and some were even playing multiple sports, but they did a great job handling everything.”

Hinsdale Central overpowers scrappy LTHS in season finale Lions block punt, force 3 turnovers, but offense is stymied

A scrappy defense that blocked a punt, recovered two fumbles and came up with an interception kept the Lyons Township football team in the game Friday night against Hinsdale Central, but in the end the Red Devils’ size, strength and physicality was too much for the host Lions who fell 31-10 April 23 at Bennett Stadium in Western Springs.

Hinsdale Central went undefeated to claim the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title in the short, strange pandemic-shortened football season of the 2020-21 school year.

LTHS finished the season 2-2. The Lions

missed two games of the six-game season, both due to the pandemic. The first game of the season against York was cancelled because of a COVID case in the Lions program, while their games against Glenbard West was cancelled because of COVID case at Glenbard West.

The Lions struck first against Hinsdale Central (6-0) when Ryan Hatter Jr. roared in to block a punt on the first possession of the game. The Lions drove 36 yards down to the Hinsdale Central 6-yard line before stalling.

Marko Dubak kicked a 23-yard field goal to put the Lions ahead 3-0.

But Hinsdale Central dominated the rest of the first half, first tying the game with a field goal, and then scoring two touchdowns to take

The Lions, who struggled to move the ball all night, managed just three first downs in the first half and only one after their opening drive.

“They were very physical, they got after us and offensively we didn’t have much of a first half,” said first-year LTHS head coach Jon Beutjer.

The Lions moved the ball better in the third quarter. After an interception by senior linebacker Michael Newsome stopped a Hinsdale Central drive, the Lions put together their best drive of the game, marching 76 yards on 12 plays and pulling to within a touchdown when junior quarterback Joey Antonietti darted into the end zone on a three-yard touchdown run.

That made the score 17-10 with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter. The key play in the drive was a 31-yard completion from Antonietti to Thomas Adelson on a fly pattern up the right sideline.

But Hinsdale Central responded by dominating the fourth quarter, holding LTHS to just one first down the rest of the game and scoring two more touchdowns to put the game away.

As he has all season, Antonietti led the

LTHS offense, but could only manage 46 yards rushing on 20 carries against the stout Hinsdale Central defense. Antonietti completed 8 of 17 passes for 82 yards passing. Freshman running back John Cheney rushed for 34 yards on 10 carries. Hinsdale Central piled up 422 yards of total offense to just 170 for the Lions.

Two fumble recoveries by junior defensive back Owen McManaman helped keep the game close.

“We just really couldn’t get anything going offensively,” Beutjer said.

The loss was the Lions’ seventh straight to Hinsdale Central.

“This being our rivals, it hurt a little bit more than it usually would,” said Hatter who will be playing football at Roosevelt University next year.

The loss ended the short spring football season which was cobbled together after the fall season was cancelled because of the pandemic.

“It’s been odd but honestly I’m just super grateful that we even got the chance to play because all these kids mean the world to me,” said senior defensive back Jimmy Pouba, a captain and leader of the defense.

Nazareth Academy football falls to Benet, ends season 2-3 The Nazareth Academy football team dropped its season finale April 24 to visiting Benet Academy 3-0 in Lagrange Park.

The Redwings’ Will Benish nailed a 22-yard field goal at the 3:46 mark of the third quarter to account for the game’s only score.

The Roadrunners (2-3) had a chance to send the contest into overtime with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, but a 51-yard field goal attempt fell short.

Nazareth junior quarterback Aidan Pieper passed for 190 yards against Benet, but the

Roadrunners managed just 38 yards rushing.

The offense struggled in the final three games of the season as it was shutout in all of them.

Nevertheless, Nazareth coach Tim Racki thought the season was successful simply because the Roadrunners got to play this year, given the challenges the Covid-19 pandemic presented.

“The fact that we were able to compete is a huge victory,” Racki said. “There was a time where we didn’t think we’d be able to play at all.”

The season was a mixed bag for star junior wide receiver Tyler Morris. One of the state’s top prospects in the Class of 2022, Morris made a verbal commitment to play at the University of Michigan upon his graduation next year. But he also suffered an ACL injury that places his availability for the fall in question.

“It was quite a roller-coaster because we were devastated about his injury, but then in a matter of 24 hours, he called [Michigan coach] Jim Harbaugh and told him about the

injury and that he wanted to commit,” Racki said. “[Harbaugh] accepted him. Now that Tyler knows he’s going to be a Wolverine, it lessens the blow of the injury.”

Racki knows a new challenge is ahead for Nazareth: how to adjust to what will be a compressed offseason schedule.

“It’s going to be a quick turnaround,” he said. “Before your know it, summer contact days will be here, and then we’re into another season. It’s not a real offseason.”
