North Riverside trustees approve rat-control program Fees will fund measure aimed at systematic inspections, mitigation

With a full complement of elected officials at the board table, North Riverside trustees voted 4 to 2 on April 18 to approve an ordinance establishing a rat-control program that will be funded largely through fees charged to restaurants and bars, other businesses and the owners of rental properties.

Trustees H. Bob Demopoulos and Marybelle Mandel voted against the measure.

While he didn’t say why he voted no on April 18, Demopoulos during a March 14 discussion of the program argued it was unfair to levy a fee against business owners since rat infestations were “a villagewide problem and you’re only targeting a certain class.”

Mandel after casting her no vote on April 18 stated she supported the idea of a program but was against fees.

“If we keep giving them fees, they’re going to pass it on to the consumers, hopefully not have to lay off employees and increase rents for people,” Mandel said.

The fee structure passed by the board is tiered to reflect the impact certain uses have with regard to attracting rodents and other pests. Single-family rentals must pay an annual fee of $100, with multifamily buildings, non-foodservice commercial uses of less than 40,000 square feet and churches being charged $150 annually.

Restaurants not located inside North Riverside Park Mall, schools and recreation centers as well as multifamily buildings and commercial uses of more than 40,000 square feet must pay an annual fee of $250.

Any place serving or selling food with occupancy rated over 500 people has to pay a $500 annual fee. The only place fitting that description in the village is North Riverside Park Mall.

Mall food court businesses, including

the one owned by Demopoulos, will not be charged individually as part of the program.

The owner of any business, institution or rental property found to be in violation of the ordinance faces fines of up to $500 per day.

The fees are meant to cover the cost of administering the program, which requires each business to hire a pest-control business and to hand over to the village its inspection logs and records of service calls.

Single-family and multifamily residential properties must conduct inspections quarterly. Churches as well as non-food commercial/industrial uses and multifamily buildings (5 or more units) of less than 40,000 square feet must conduct inspections monthly.

Schools, recreation facilities, restaurants, non-food commercial/industrial uses and multifamily buildings (5 or more

units) of more than 40,000 square feet must be inspected every two weeks.

North Riverside Park Mall must conduct inspections on a weekly basis.

The village has hired a company called First Illinois Systems, which it pays $4,410 per quarter, to conduct inspections in the village generally and track infestations.

It would be the company responsible for administering the rat-control program for the village.

North Riverside has already spent a good deal of money attempting to mitigate a rat infestation problem that has been a particular problem on the village’s east end, but which has now spread to other areas.

Last fall, Village Administrator Sue Scarpiniti said the village had spent $20,000 during the prior year on rat mitigation.

It is hoped that the new program will prod commercial and rental property owners to make a more concerted, systematic effort to mitigate the problem.

After a flurry of activity during midMarch as workers rerouted a water main and ComEd power lines under Salt Creek, there’s been little activity at the Brookfield Avenue bridge worksite for the past couple of weeks.

However, that is supposed to change this week, according to local officials and the engineer overseeing the bridge reconstruction project, which started in May 2021.

The holdup was due to ComEd waiting on the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad to issue a permit and provide a flagger so the utility company can work within 25 feet of the railroad right-of-way to remove a utility pole west of the creek south of Brookfield Avenue and take down overhead power lines.

Those power lines, which run parallel to the creek along the west bank of Salt Creek, are no longer needed since ComEd rerouted the lines by running them through a trench cut into the bed of Salt Creek in March. The village also rerouted the Brookfield Avenue water main at that time in order to provide enough room for a larger superstructure needed to support the new bridge.

A contractor hired by ComEd to perform the removal of the overhead lines and the utility pole west of the creek was onsite May 2 to begin that effort. Brookfield Village Manager Timothy Wiberg said he was told it will take ComEd about two weeks to finish that work.

Jesse Singer, the project engineer from Ciorba Group, said that in addition to removing the overhead power lines, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago must finish some sewer work on the east side of Salt Creek.

Lorig Construction, the general contractor for the project will remove what remains of old bridge’s abutment footing on both sides of the creek, said Singer.

They will then use a crane to drive piles into the riverbed.

“These piles are what the bridge abutments will be constructed on,” Singer said. “The abutments will start to take shape as soon as the piling work is completed.”

Wiberg also acknowledged concerns from the Brookfield Farmers Market organizers worried about the state of the village hall parking lot, where the market will be held every Saturday morning beginning June 4.

“Beginning [this week] the contractor

will be out here and begin restoration work to clean up these areas,” Wiberg said. “They are aware of our schedule for the farmers market and we do intend to be cleaned up. The bridge won’t be in place unfortunately, but the parking lot and the park area adjacent to the creek will be in much better shape.”

Having experienced so many unforeseen delays, officials have been loath to announce an expected completion date for the project, which initially was supposed to wrap up by the end of 2021.

Singer said that based on the contractor’s original schedule, if there are no further delays “the bridge build should take roughly five months from the time they start driving piles.”

Wiberg assured elected officials last week that “we will get this project done in 2022.”

Burglary crew hits Brookfield trucking yard At least three people broke into numerous storage containers and units at a Brookfield trucking yard during the early morning hours of April 26, cutting locks, rummaging through containers and stealing items for about a half hour before being scared off by an alarm after prying open the overhead garage door to one of the units.

Security video reportedly showed that the offenders arrived at 9100 Plainfield Road in a silver vehicle at around 3:10 a.m. Three people are seen moving among and entering shipping containers in the yard, removing items and placing them in their vehicle.

At about 3:45 a.m. the offenders are seen lifting an overhead garage door.

Two offender entered the garage briefly but quickly exit and run to the area where their vehicle was parked. The vehicle is last seen turning right on Plainfield Road toward 47th Street.

Among the items taken from the containers were a Honda generator valued at $1,500 and four 5-ton capacity chain falls each valued at between $1,500 and $2,000. Police also reported finding that an overhead garage door window to another storage area had been smashed, though no entry was gained, apparently.

Disorderly conduct North Riverside police charged a 56-year-old Chicago man with disorderly conduct after he allegedly exposed himself to a 40-year-old Cicero woman inside Burlington, 2208 Harlem Ave. on April 27 at about 8:05 p.m.

The victim told police the man followed her inside the store, asking “Are you a model?” before exposing himself to her on the sales floor. Police arrested the alleged offender in the store’s parking lot.

Trespassing at motel Brookfield police cited a 36-year-old Lyons man for trespassing after he allegedly spent a night, free of charge, inside a room at the Colony Motel, 9232

Ogden Ave., crawling in through an open window around 1:15 a.m. on April 29.

Security video showed the man checking second-floor doors and windows of the east wing and entering one room when he found a window unlocked. Later that morning a motel employee reported seeing the man exit the room and leave the property. The man reportedly had defecated in the room’s bathtub.

After Brookfield police sent out a bulletin with an image of the suspect, a police officer in another agency reportedly identified him, leading to the man’s arrest.

DUI A 29-year-old Brookfield man faces drunken driving charges after he reported blacked out while behind the wheel of his 2017 Volkswagen and drove it off the road, up onto the parkway and over a stop sign before striking a tree at the intersection of Washington and Prairie avenues on April 29 at about 1:20 a.m.

The driver wasn’t seriously injured, according to police, but he was transported to the hospital due to the severity of the crash. The driver reportedly told police he had been with co-workers in Bolingbrook and remembered exiting I-55, blinking and then opening his eyes to find the airbags deployed inside his car.

In addition to driving under the influence, he was cited for damage to village property, operating an uninsured vehicle and other traffic offenses.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, April 25-May 1, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Cook County Health celebrates administering 1 million vaccines

Preckwinkle announces milestone at North Riverside clinic

Cook County officials including Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Health CEO Israel Rocha and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson (D-1st) gathered in North Riverside on April 28 to celebrate Cook County Health administering 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

During remarks inside the Cook County Health clinic at 1800 Harlem Ave. on April 28, Rocha said the organization was one of the first health systems in the nation to notch such an achievement and both he and Preckwinkle acknowledged those who made it possible.

“This is a great day,” Preckwinkle said.

“Think about how far we’ve come since December 2020 [when vaccines rolled out]. That context makes this moment really special.”

Preckwinkle also thanked state government and health officials as well as the Illinois National Guard, which was called upon to staff mass vaccination sites and other county vaccination sites – including the North Riverside clinic when vaccines were

rolled out to the most vulnerable Illinoisans in early 2021.

“Those sites were critical in getting the maximum number of doses into arms as quickly and efficiently as possible in the early months of the pandemic,” Preckwinkle said. “Vaccine administration was a key component of Cook County’s comprehensive COVID-19 response.”

Rocha, who became Cook County Health CEO in December 2020, also praised the county’s ability to operate its mass vaccination sites, like the one set up in a vacant bigbox retail property at the Forest Park Mall, to facilitate the county’s vaccination efforts.

In addition, he credited a concerted effort that included not just the county but municipalities, schools, local pharmacies and other organizations for helping increase vaccination rates in Cook County.

As of April 28, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health, 86 percent of suburban Cook County residents had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 65.4 percent had been fully vaccinated.

Locally, the rates were even higher, with more than 90 percent of Brookfield and Riverside residents having received one dose of the vaccine. In North Riverside it was 86.4 percent.

“We have been able to celebrate today that our community has substantially increased protection against this virus,” Rocha said.

“And even though we know that we have seen tides come and go between the different levels of infection, we know the COVID vaccines have made a difference.”

Hospitalizations and fatalities have decreased dramatically as vaccines have become more prevalent, Rocha said.

“When we first set out on this journey our goal was always to reach today, to be able to give one million vaccines to help our county get that sense of relief,” Rocha said.

Vaccines and boosters are still being administered at the North Riverside clinic and standing in for the 1 millionth Cook County resident to receive a dose were Pearl Links Goliath and Frederick Goliath, both senior citizens, who were there to get their second boosters.

According to Frederick Goliath, 80, the couple wasted no time in getting vaccinated when the doses first became generally available back in January 2021, so they were anxious to get their boosters up to date.

“As senior citizens we enjoyed taking the shots when they were offered,” Goliath said. “We got them right away.”

New weekly COVID case rates continue to climb Hospitalization, death rates remain low, but spread is concern

The rate of new COVID-19 cases continued to accelerate last week, with positive cases in Brookfield rising for the fourth straight week, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health.

For the weeklong period ending May 2, there were 59 new COVID-19 cases recorded in Brookfield, up from 42 the prior week. As recently as April 5, Brookfield had reported a single-digit weekly increase.

Reinforcing the continuing threat COVID-19 is to those who are either unvaccinated or have underlying health conditions, the Cook County Medical Examiner reported that the death of a 60-year-old Brookfield man on April 23 was COVID-related, the 30th

fatality of a Brookfield resident from the virus recorded by that agency.

Just how many in Brookfield have actually died from COVID-19 is unknown. The Cook County Medical Examiner has not tracked the deaths of Cook County residents outside of Cook County and on April 1 announced that it was no longer taking jurisdiction over COVID deaths in hospitals, nursing homes or hospice unless there was another factor that fell within the medical examiner’s jurisdiction.

New weekly cases of COVID-19 in Riverside as of May 2 climbed to 42. That is by far the highest weekly number since February and reflects a trend being seen generally in Cook County.

The number of new weekly cases in North Riverside as of May 2 fell to nine after a spike of 20 the prior week. However, the 29 cases in the past two weeks roughly match the total number of cases recorded in North Riverside between Feb. 21 and April 18.

On April 29, the Cook County Department of Public Health announced that due to an

D102 wants teaching staff to reflect student demography Officials admit goal of 51% male teachers is unlikely in short term

Administrators in LaGrange-Brookfield School District 102, which serves the southwestern portion of Brookfield, say that their goal is to hire a staff that is 51 percent male and 31 percent people of color. That would match the current student demographics in the district.

District 102 Social Emotional Learning Coordinator Lynn Lawrence and Human Resources Director David Holt announced those goals during a presentation last week to the school board on the work of the Recruitment and Retention Equity Work Group of the Committee for Equity and Minority Achievement (CEMA).

Three other CEMA work groups also reported to the board in a presentation that took about two hours.

Achieving a teacher ratio of 51 percent male seems unlikely in the foreseeable future. Currently only 17.7 percent of active staff in District 102 and just 14.8 percent of teachers are men.

Nationwide only 20.4 percent of K-8 teachers are men, according to the website of MenTeach, a nonprofit whose mission is to increase the number of male teachers. Only 17.2 percent of this year’s District 102 job applicants were men. Historically elementary education teachers have been overwhelmingly female, al-

though more men have been becoming elementary school teachers in recent years.

“Those are very lofty goals,” Holt said.

In a telephone interview with the Landmark, Holt said the goal was aspirational.

“It’s not something, frankly, that we expect to reach in any near term,” Holt said. “But we certainly are making it clear a strong commitment to providing, as we like to say internally, both windows and mirrors to our students, so we’re acknowledging that this is also important.”

Male teachers are most common at Park Junior High School, where 28.8 percent of the teachers are men. Traditionally, men are more likely to teach in the higher grades. Only 13.3 percent of teachers at Congress Park School, located in southwest Brookfield, are men. The district has no male kindergarten teachers.

The ratio of men to women is higher in administrative roles, with 33.3 percent of employees at the district’s administrative center being men.

Black/indigenous/people of color (BIPOC) teachers are also underrepresented in the district. While 31 percent of District 102 students are classified as BIPOC, only 6.7 percent of teachers are.

Congress Park School has the most BIPOC teachers in the district at 15.6 percent. According to the 2020-21 Illinois School Report Card, 47.5 percent of Congress Park students are Hispanic, 36.9

percent are white, 8.5 percent are Black and 5.3 percent are mixed race.

The district conducts exit interviews with all staff leaving the district. Over the past five years, Congress Park ranked the lowest among all schools in the district in terms of the percentage of exiting employees who felt that all employees supported ethnic, racial and gender diversity, although only five exiting Congress Park employees were interviewed.

District 102 has taken proactive steps to address equity, boost minority student academic achievement and promote diversity since the CEMA initiative began in 2016. The district has expanded its social media presence to five platforms, and social media content is also presented in Spanish.

All channels of district communication include messaging related to its commitment to what is known as diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). There is also messaging promoting the commitment to DEI in every building in the district, mostly in the main office and the principal’s office.

The district is reaching out to more colleges and universities it recruits from in an attempt to create a more diverse applicant pool. All interview panels now are expected to have a diverse makeup and diverse candidates are supposed to be interviewed for every job opening.

The district seems to making some

progress in creating a more diverse workforce although it remains far short of its goals and targets. This year 27.1 percent of all job applicants to the district were classified as BIPOC compared to just 17 percent four years ago. This year at least 65 percent, the race of 6.9 percent of job applicants was unknown, of job applicants were white compared 77.5 percent four years ago.

Currently 93.3 percent of the district’s teachers are white, while 68 percent of the district’s students are white.

Hispanic teachers are most severely underrepresented in the district compared to the number of Hispanic students.

While 20 percent of District 102 students are Hispanic, only about 3.9 percent of District 102 teachers are Hispanic.

Black and Asian teachers are slightly underrepresented in the district. Only about 2.5 percent of the district’s teachers are Black while about 5 percent of the district’s students are Black. Only 0.9 percent of the district’s teachers are Asian while about 1.7 percent of the district’s students are Asian.

The district’s teaching staff is slowly becoming more diverse. A decade ago, 96 percent of the district’s teachers were white, according to the school report card.

“The district is as diverse as it has been,” Holt said. “We are moving in the right direction.”

Woman killed, 4 hurt in crash on First Avenue in Riverside Vehicles were traveling in opposite directions, but other details sketchy

A woman was killed and four others injured in a violent crash involving a Chevy Malibu and a GMC sports utility vehicle on First Avenue just south of Waubansee Road in Riverside on the night of April 30.

Riverside Public Safety Director Matthew Buckley said the other four people hurt in the crash all suffered non-life threatening injuries. Samantha Nieves, 23,

of Summit, who was a front seat passenger in the Chevy Malibu, sustained fatal injuries.

The crash occurred at about 8 p.m., according to Buckley. The Chevy Malibu, which was carrying Nieves and the driver, was headed northbound on First Avenue, according to Buckley. The GMC vehicle, which was carrying three people, was traveling southbound at the time of the crash.

Both vehicles sustained substantial damage and Nieves, who was trapped inside the

Chevy, had to be extricated by firefighters from Riverside, Lyons and McCook. Ambulances from Lyons, Berwyn, Brookfield, North Riverside and the Pleasantview Fire Protection District responded to the scene and transported crash victims to Loyola and MacNeal hospitals.

Other details regarding how the crash unfolded are still unclear. Riverside police are being assisted by the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force (WESTAF) Major Crash Investigation Team, which is

handling the crash reconstruction.

No citations or criminal charges were announced, but that could change depending on the outcome of the crash reconstruction investigation.

It is unknown at this time to what extent, if any, drugs, alcohol or speed played a role in the crash.

First Avenue was shut down to traffic between Ogden and Forest avenues until about 1 a.m. as police processed the crash scene.

North Riverside Players mark return with ‘Sweeney Todd’ Troupe to stage first production since 2019 after pandemic hiatus

When the North Riverside Players selected “Sweeney Todd” as its spring 2020 musical, never did the troupe imagine it would take two years for the show to see the light of day.

Twenty-four months after originally planned to open for audiences, their production of “Sweeney Todd” is finally set to debut May 5.

A dark, witty musical filled with love, murder and revenge, “Sweeney Todd” tells the story of Todd, a barber who assumes a new alias to resume working above Mrs. Lovett’s struggling pie shop after being wrongfully sentenced to life in jail by a corrupt judge.

But after swearing vengeance against the judge who altered his life forever, Todd and Lovett scheme together to develop a plan which will play to both of their advantages — and lead them down a dangerous path with deadly consequences.

Coincidentally, the Players’ production is an homage of sorts -- Stephen Sondheim, the writer and lyricist of “Sweeney Todd,”

died last November at age 91.

Often considered Sondheim’s masterpiece, “Sweeney Todd” made its Broadway debut in 1979, earning rave reviews and numerous Tony Awards including best musical, best direction, best original score and best musical book.

“Sondheim’s music is complex; he sort of reinvented the American musical,” said Al Meyer, president of the North Riverside Players. “Rogers and Hammerstein had a certain kind of flavor to them, but when Sondheim wrote, he turned things up a whole other notch in terms of the music.

The songs are challenging to sing, the music is challenging to play and he does all kinds of interesting things musically.”

Meyer says the majority of those cast for the show in 2020 were able to return to see “Sweeney Todd” finally come to life.

“We have a very talented cast, and the orchestra has done many more rehearsals than they usually do because they understood the challenge,” Meyer said. “While it’s sort of a dark tale, it’s beautifully told.

The music, the lyrics — it’ll capture audiences and take them along for the ride.”

bringing high-quality theatrical productions to local audiences on a modest budget for 30 years, and “Sweeney Todd” director Jay Fontanetta encouraged theatergoers to return for an evening of entertainment.

“A two-story set, a trap door, two large stage extensions, original costumes and a very stylized concept make this show unlike anything the North Riverside Players has ever done,” he said. “[With Sondheim’s] passing last year, it’s almost an honor to him that this is our first big show after the last two years.”

Performing as Sweeney Todd is Danny Parrott from Arlington Heights. In his first Players production, he’s excited to act in what he has considered a dream role.

“The music, the story and the dark comedy make it a theater experience like no other,” he said. “As a bonus, the cast and tech team for this production are a wonderful collection of talented people. Each character is perfectly cast in their roles and an

absolute joy to work with.”

Back in her sixth production is Portage Park resident Meaghan Hurley, performing as Mrs. Lovitt.

“It’s such an iconic role, played by the likes of Angela Lansbury and Patti Lupone,” Hurley said. “While it’s been challenging, it’s also been an incredible learning experience.”

“Sweeney Todd” plays at the North Riverside Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave., Thursday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7 and Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. except for the May 7 matinee at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors over 60 and $18 for students.

Village Free Press joins GCM Lions honor Navarro with Jansky Award

W

riting today alongside my colleague Michael Romain to share the news that Growing Community Media is expanding to include the Village Free Press, the Proviso Township newspaper, which Michael launched nine years ago to cover his hometown of Maywood.

Over the years, Village Free Press has grown to cover nine of the 14 villages which make up Proviso. Michael’s hard work and strong community journalism have made VFP the single and respected source of local news in the township.

Simultaneously, Michael has worked at Growing Community Media, initially as editor of our Austin Weekly News and education reporter for Wednesday Journal. Over the past year, with funding from a local donor, Michael became our equity editor and columnist while continuing to edit the Austin Weekly.

Several months ago, Michael suggested we consider fully aligning Village Free Press with GCM’s four flags to make it part of Growing Community Media. We have been working out the details and last Friday signed the paperwork to make it happen.

This growth really reflects the mission we set out to accomplish when we created Growing Community Media three years ago as the nonprofit publisher of Wednesday Journal, Austin Weekly News, Forest Park Review and the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark.

Then and now, we see vital, complex and fascinating communities stretching from Garfield Park to Oak Park, from Riverside to Maywood that together make up the Greater West Side, a geography of diversity and shared needs and opportunities.

As always, we will cover these communities individually, but also collectively. We’ll report the news and feel of each village and neighborhood at the grassroots while also reflecting the interesting and complex issues that unite us.

These changes come with an expanded role within GCM for Michael.

He is now our director of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) while he continues as editor of Austin Weekly News and Village Free Press.

Also, we are growing our reporting staff. As part of this transition, GCM will fund a part-time reporter dedicated to covering Proviso Township. In addition, Kamil Brady, who has been vital to VFP for many years, will come aboard GCM to enhance sales and community engagement.

Igor Studenkov, one of our veteran freelance reporters, joins the staff on a part-time basis to cover Forest Park and continues to report on the West Side. A month or so ago we told you about the hiring of Samantha Callender as our community narrative reporter for the Austin Weekly.

That hire was made possible by a grant from the Field Foundation.

nside the Riverside Township Hall lobby immediately to your left on the wall is a plaque which has the names of those who have been recognized by the Riverside Township Lions Club for their contributions to the community.

It is the Jansky Award plaque. The award was started by the late Bill Jansky who was a member of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce and believed there are those within the community who deserve to be thanked for their service.

This year the Lions Club is proud to add the name of Rey Navarro to the list on the plaque. Rey is a longtime resident of the village along with his wife, Lupe. Two of their sons and their wives are also residents, Carlos and Kathy and David and Kelly.

Who is Rey Navarro? Just think the Riverside July 4 parade and the many MG cars that add to the festivity. They are here because of Rey Navarro, “Mr. MG” to most of us. So it was only obvious for him to be asked to a member of the Friends of the Fourth, a small group whose mission is rais-

ing funds to ensure the village’s July 4 celebration in Riverside continues.

The first year of its existence, the Friends of the Fourth had Rey serve as the July 4 Parade marshal. Navarro was an important part of the group and continues to give his input.

He has also served as an election judge for a number of years and has served at St. Mary Church as an usher and is part of the church’s annual Lady of Guadalupe celebration, where he can be seen serving the food with his everpresent smile.

Rey stays active and golf is his game, although I heard from someone who golfed with him they didn’t keep score.

Just being with him was par for the course and everyone is a winner. I won’t say his age, but he is an inspiration to us all.

Rey Navarro will be honored by the Riverside Township Lions Club at their May 10 dinner meeting at Connie’s Restaurant, 3271 Harlem Ave. in Berwyn. Culture change needed The following comments are in response to “Fenwick’s failures,” the Landmark View of April 20. It is well written and speaks truth to power.

Other than a few brave voices within Catholic institutions, the church continues to stonewall on the appalling fact of sexual abuse against children by those in power.

The following was, I believe, spoken by Cardinal Francis George: “A very real problem has been magnified to undermine the moral authority of the church.”

That statement alone tells me the mindset of many leaders of the church. The abuse of children by clergy is horrific enough; nothing has been magnified. And, in my opinion, the church no longer has much moral authority left.

So much money has been spent on programs like Come Home Catholics and Renew My Church and we are asked to evangelize, and not much thought as to why Catholics left in the first place.

There is so much that is beautiful and good in our church. So many traditions that comfort and people who dedicate themselves to making the world a better place. Let that type of culture prevail.

And I commend the fortitude and bravery of the young people who come forward with their testimony to speak truth to power. Bless you.

Defamation alleged from page 1 in January, but the defendants have just recently begun to be served.

Those being sued for defamation include Fernando Flores, a village trustee whose seat at the board table is next to Marybelle Mandel, the trustee who lost in a three-way race for mayor in April 2021 after a controversial campaign that featured lots of mudslinging in both directions.

In addition to Flores, those being sued include former mayor Kenneth Krochmal – sued for libel for the second time after a contentious election – as well as Nico Ranieri, the son of Village Clerk Kathy Ranieri; John Gardiner, a former member of the North Riverside Plan Commission; and North Riverside residents Laura Bersheid, Brent Bernal and Nick Tricoci.

The Mandels allege that all of those being accused engaged in a “campaign to demean, harass and defame” Marybelle Mandel in social media posts, statements made at public meetings that were reported on in the local newspaper and privately to voters as they campaigned door-to-door for candidates opposing Mandel in her bid for mayor against incumbent Hubert Hermanek Jr. and the

“The clear motive, plan and intention of the defendants was to twist and turn small factoids into lies and defamatory statements, thus influencing the electorate to vote for their candidates instead of plaintiff Marybelle Mandel and her People Before Politics Party,” the lawsuit states.

It’s the third time a libel lawsuit has been filed in connection with a North Riverside election in the past decade. Two were filed in connection with the last particularly nasty mayor/trustee election in 2013.

Prior to that election PSI, the village’s paramedic provider, sued a slate of political candidates, which included Marybelle Mandel, for allegedly defaming the company in its campaign materials.

PSI ended up settling the suit in 2016 for an undisclosed amount of cash and a public apology printed in the Landmark, to which Mandel was not a signatory.

After the 2013 election, a police sergeant, Frank Schmalz, sued the village board and then-Police Chief Lane Niemann for retaliating against him by blocking promotion and stripping him of some duties because he supported an opposing slate of candidates.

In that same lawsuit, Schmalz alleged Krochmal, who was mayor at the time, had defamed him during an exchange outside the Village Commons polling place on election day in April 2013.

While the lawsuit was partially dismissed,

the defamation allegation is still pending against Krochmal and the suit has not yet gone to trial. Attempts at settling that lawsuit, the most recent last December, have failed.

Krochmal is singled out in the Mandels’ lawsuit for comments he made at two consecutive village board meetings in March 2021. On March 15, 2021, Krochmal more directly accused Marybelle Mandel of being a “criminal” and called her a “bagman in [her] husband’s criminal scheme.”

He was referring to David Mandel’s federal conviction in 2000 for making false statements to a financial institution. Mandel appealed the conviction, but an appellate court panel of judges upheld the ruling. The written opinion implicated Marybelle Mandel in her husband’s scheme, although she was never charged with any crime.

“Mandel had [Marybelle Mandel] prepare a gift letter in which she falsely claimed that she was a relative of the buyers and had given them $12,900 for the down payment,” the appellate court opinion stated. “Mandel used $12,900 from his personal account to obtain a cashier’s check, deleted the last digit of the serial number, and made a copy for the lender as verification of the earnest money.”

The Mandels’ lawsuit argues Krochmal’s statements at the board meetings prior to the 2021 election were defamatory since Marybelle Mandel was never arrested, charged or convicted of any crime.

The lawsuit accuses Flores of defamation by falsely claiming David Mandel had called him a “no good Hispanic” in 2020 and then repeated that claim on social media during the 2021 campaign, allegedly stating the Mandels “hated Hispanics.” The lawsuit notes Marybelle Mandel is herself of Hispanic origin.

Gardiner, Ranieri, Berscheid, Bernal are accused of defaming the Mandels in public and private social media posts. Tricoci is accused of authoring allegedly defamatory campaign flyers and claims Tricoci was behind a letter read aloud at a village board meeting prior to the election, purportedly from an employee of North Riverside’s waste hauling firm, accusing David Mandel of harassing company employees and of threatening that his wife would fire them as the waste hauler if she were elected mayor.

The lawsuit refers to the waste hauling employee as Tricoci’s “buddy” and that it was Tricoci who “contrived the fabricated and defamatory letter.”

RBHS seniors aim to advance to badminton state finals Bulldogs compete at IHSA sectionals this week

Riverside-Brookfield High School senior Claire Shanahan has the perfect sports setup in her backyard.

During the summer of 2019, she and fellow senior Alyssa Krivak used the makeshift court for some extreme badminton.

“In one week we played like 30 hours with one bird,” Krivak said. “The bird was all shredded to pieces because we wanted to see how long we could play with that bird.”

After years as friends and players, the seniors will try to share another memorable badminton moment -- qualifying for their first state meets after missing by one sectional victory as a doubles team in 2021.

The Bulldogs will compete at the Carl Sandburg Sectional on this week, where top-four finishers advance to the IHSA state championships. Shanahan and Krivak are the team’s two singles entries. Seniors Alice Sylvie and Claire Harrison and senior Zona Evans and sophomore Katie DeJesus will play doubles.

“I’m very motivated,” Shanahan said. “I’ve been playing since I was 7. Just playing in my backyard was very competitive. Playing here, I really want to get at it and go to state.”

This is their third full varsity season. Barely into their initial 2020 varsity season, the COVID-19 pandemic ended all

spring sports.

During the regular season, Shanahan was primarily playing No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with Sylvie. Krivak was at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles with Harrison.

At the 2021 sectional, Shanahan and Krivak won two of their first three doubles matches, the first victory after losing the first set. They lost the state-determining match 21-11, 21-10.

“I still reflect on it, but it’s in the past and it just motivates us to move forward,” Krivak said.

Shanahan’s backyard fuels her competitive desire. Besides having enough room to create the badminton court, there’s a fence the perfect height to serve as net.

Shanahan and Krivak have played every summer since seventh grade. Shanahan also plays family members, mostly her father.

“Every single summer, we’d just play and play and he could never beat me,” Shanahan said. “He won once and I got so mad. Then I was like, ‘OK, no one’s ever winning again.’ ” At RBHS, the seniors began on the freshman level. Shanahan was elated simply being able to practice with the varsity.

Midway through the 2019 season, Shanahan was promoted to junior varsity to play No. 3 singles for an invitational.

She took first place. Krivak also got the JV call and was third at No. 2 doubles with Sylvie.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. I don’t just get to practice with the varsity,’” Shanahan said. “Playing with everyone on the team is a great thing to do and connect with everyone in the program.”

Proteau also anchored RBHS’ winning state. In cross country, he again stepped up 3,200 relay (8:25.81) at H-F with Jack O’Brien, at state last November by taking third in James Dalton and Will Kallas by more than Class 2A with a personal-best time.

“That was a fun race. I was aiming for fifth,” Proteau said. “The 4:20 was a great conclusion to that [track] season.”

The top two sectional finishers qualify for state as well as entries that achieve state-qualifying standards at the meet.

This year, RBHS is joined by distance powerhouse Lyons Township at the Morton Sectional on May 18. In decent conditions, Proteau will probably need to achieve the 4:23.68 qualifying standard at the meet, unlike 2021.

“Sectionals for sure will be really competitive,” Proteau said. “There’s definitely a lot of pressure to go back to run the state meet. If I don’t qualify, I know I’ve had a great high school career.”

LTHS water polo’s Roberto an all-around threat A scorer and standout defender, senior all-stater looks to postseason

Upon finding her sports home in the water, Lyons Township High School senior Novalee Roberto found a new home on land.

Still living in Ohio, the standout girls water polo player often traveled to LTHS to participate in Olympic Development Program events.

Just before her freshman year, Roberto’s family moved to LaGrange.

“I had played with the Lyons club team a little before I had come into [high] school,” Roberto said. “It was nice to have those connections. I wasn’t completely alone.

I knew the area so it wasn’t completely shocking.”

Roberto now will graduate among of the top LTHS players and continue playing at NCAA Division I St. Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Roberto leads this season’s Lions (23-1-1) with 71 assists, is second with 79 goals and shares second with 53 steals.

For the LTHS 2021 state quarterfinalists, Roberto was named first team all-state after team bests of 120 goals, 57 assists and 81 steals.

good player and I can do what people think I can. And [it’s] motivation to get that award again or go further and help the people around me get that award when I’m gone.”

The 5-foot-6 Roberto takes pride in her versatility. LTHS coach Megan Jacobs likens Roberto to a “quarterback” in the water.

“Nova is our most experienced player,” Jacobs said. “She plays very smart and not only knows her own defensive and offensive positioning. She is very vocal and often directs the girls into correct positioning.”

Offensively, Roberto can drive inside or shoot from the perimeter. Her speed makes her excellent at creating and thwarting transition attacks. She especially likes double-teaming opponents to create steals.

“I very much like to play defense,” Roberto said. “I’d like to think I’m pretty fast so I use my speed a lot. My strongest [suits] would probably be pressing and then going back to help counters.”

Roberto’s mother found her unique first name from the 1995 novel “Where the Heart Is,” by Billie Letts.

Roberto grew up in Mission Viejo, Cali-

fornia. She started as a young swimmer but it “just didn’t fit right.” After soccer and synchronized swimming, she joined Power Aquatics water polo by her house at age 9.

After sixth grade, Roberto moved to Upper Arlington, Ohio, and continued club play with Columbus Water Polo.

“After synchronized swimming, I was like I’m already getting kicked underwater, throwing people out of the air. I might as well just try another contact sport in the water,” Roberto said.

She credits Illinois for her continued improvement, particularly her Eastside club team based in Evanston with teammates from Evanston, Hinsdale Central, York and Mother McAuley.

Roberto plans to play masters water polo and has received offers to coach after college. At St. Francis, Roberto will major in cybersecurity and minor in American Sign Language.

Roberto was intrigued by St. Francis classes for digital forensics and criminology. She began learning sign language in Ohio to communicate with a deaf friend.

“My goal is to be fluent in her language, because we’re very close,” Roberto said.

After their huge 12-9 victory over rival Hinsdale Central on April 21, the LTHS boys (8-6, 2-1 in WSC Silver) made it four straight by beating Lockport 11-5, Oak Park and River Forest 10-4 and St. Charles North 11-9 last week.
