Groundbreaking ceremonies kickoff 15-month construction project

As groundbreakings go, the one that officially welcomed the construction of a new gym and major renovation at S.E. Gross Middle School on May 24 had to be somewhat imaginative.

Faced with the prospect of pretending to put a spade through solid asphalt or trotting out a silver-tipped jackhammer, officials opted for building a wood box and filling it with dirt that could be shoveled onto the asphalt.

pharmaceutical companies and their subsidiaries, drug distribution companies and three doctors who formerly ran an alleged opioid “pill mill” out of a now-shuttered pain clinic in Riverside.

If John Kuba gets his way, spider haters will leave Brookfield Zoo’s new summer exhibit, Amazing Arachnids, with a new appreciation for the eight-legged creepy crawlies. Maybe, he hopes, they’ll even start to love them as much as he does.

In a huge white tent filled with 100 spiders and a few scorpions, it’s surprisingly fascinating to get up close to spiders you’ll not see anywhere else and spider specialist Kuba, a 2017 Riverside-Brookfield High School graduate, is right there to help others see the beauty and personality he sees in each one.

Spiders often get a bad rap, says Andre Copeland, interpretive programs manager at the zoo, who is especially passionate about spiders and this year’s exhibit created by Build 4 Impact.

In fact, he clapped his hands in glee as the zoo welcomed its first visitors to the exhibit.

“We wanted people to realize spiders are more than an eight-legged animal that crawls around and freaks us out. These spiders actually inspire art, entertainment, technological advances,” Copeland says. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to make their own connections and walk out deciding for themselves what spiders mean to them.”

Brookfield Zoo unveiled this exhibit, the largest public collection of arachnids in North America, on May 26. It runs through Sept. 3. It takes on arachnids’ influence on science, the arts and culture (hello “Charlotte’s Web” and Harry Potter’s Aragog) in three sections in the exhibit.

The exhibit was built with families in mind, with spiders housed in glass cases at kids-eye level and stools to help them see the higher-up spiders. Plus, the zoo has built in plenty of hands-on interactives, including a space to weave a spider web and a video teaching the fun tarantella folk dance from Italy.

Special zoo chats are planned as well; if you are lucky, you might even get to meet Fluffy, the zoo’s own bird-eating spider.

As a curatorial assistant, Kuba, 19, brings a lot of expertise to the exhibit, created by the company, Build 4 Impact.

Kuba has been collecting spiders for more than two years and has nearly 75 now in a menagerie of reptiles and mammals he’s creating in his parents’ Brookfield home. In the zoo’s new exhibit, he’s already coveting some of the spiders he plans to add to his collection.

“I love them so much,” he says, adding that he hopes he can help others appreciate the arachnids’ special qualities, too.

the West Mall, families can experience the new 3,500-square-foot Mission Safari Maze with 48 possible missions that take them through the maze while teaching about species’ survival and protection, including spiders.

The maze includes a climb-on spider web, jungle vines, swinging bars and a zip slide -- and plenty of dead ends to challenge the kids.

“We don’t promise that we are going to have people walking out of here loving spiders and wanting to get touchy-feely with them or that we are going to change perceptions,” Copeland says. “People may still be afraid, but they will at least have the opportunity to make a different type of connection and maybe dispel some myths.”

Tickets to Amazing Arachnids are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 3-11 and senior citizens 65 and over, in addition to regular zoo admission and parking.

North Riverside delays vote on tax incentive for mall Officials want to better understand financial impact

The North Riverside village board has put off a vote to support a property tax relief incentive for the North Riverside Park Mall, one shopping center officials have said is necessary in order to make expansion of the mall’s movie theater possible.

In the works since 2015, both the mall and its movie theater operator, Classic Cinemas, want to double the number of screens. Such a project, however, could result in a significant alteration to that part of the mall, increasing its leasable space and, with that, its property assessment.

“We anticipate an increase in our real estate taxes with the improvements to the shopping center,” said Harvey Ahitow, general manager of North Riverside Park Mall, adding that the project will also come at a cost to both the mall, which is owned by the Feil Organization, and Classic Cinemas.

To soften that blow, North Riverside Park Mall officials would like to obtain a Class 7C incentive from Cook County. The incentive reduces the property assessment on the new construction, gradually increasing it from 10 percent of fair market value to 25 percent

In the meantime, Classic Cinemas and mall officials are trying to find alternatives to a major addition that would trigger higher property assessments.

Chris Johnson, CEO of Classic Cinemas says his company has largely abandoned the idea of building a major addition to the north side of the food court.

Instead, a new plan is afoot to expand the theater’s footprint largely within retail spaces that already exist adjacent to the movie theater. Doing so would require relocation of stores and would probably still require some kind of building expansion.

“We’re still bullish on it, but we have some work to do in moving existing tenants in two different spaces,” Johnson said. “The theater is still doing really well. Ultimately, we’re here for the long haul.”

Johnson said he believes the expansion could realistically be complete by the holiday season of 2019.

“We’re disappointed it’s taking so long, but at the same time, that’s the reality,” Johnson said.

Lyons School 103 just promoted four current staff members to new positions.

On May 14 the Lyons-Brookfield District 103 Board of Education voted 4 to 1 to make Home School Principal Kim Ontiveros the district’s new Human Resource Director, a position that has been vacant since former HR director Marty Stack left last year.

Since then, a lower-level district employee has handled HR responsibilities, but that person is resigning now that Ontiveros has been hired.

The board also promoted three longtime technology support employees to 12-month administrative positions.

In December, Ontiveros received a doctorate in education from National Louis University, with a superintendent’s endorsement.

Ontiveros said that she has wanted to work in HR for some time.

“It’s actually been a goal of mine for many years,” Ontiveros said.

Ontiveros received a two-year contract and will be paid $115,000 a year.

She said she plans to do much of the preliminary work in recruiting teachers and evaluating teacher applicants, work principals have been doing.

“I’m trying to help the principals,” Ontive-

ros said. “In the past, the principals used to have to post their own jobs.”

Only two of the five current principals in District 103, Jan Bernard at Edison School and Al Molina at Robinson School, will be returning to their jobs next year. Ontiveros said she is working with both to help interview and select new principals for the district and said she’ll have an active role in mentoring the new principals hired this summer.

Board member Joanne Schaeffer cast the only vote against hiring Ontiveros as HR director, saying afterward that she thought the salary was too high.

Ontiveros had been making $99,568 as a principal, according to information posted on the district’s web site.

The school board voted 3 to 2 to hire longtime technology support specialist Michael Crowley as technology director, a post vacant since John Williamsen, resigned last summer.

Crowley will be paid $77,000 a year.

Board members Jorge Torres and Michael Bennett voted against Crowley’s hire.

The district’s two other longtime technology support specialists are also getting promotions to newly created positions. Vivian Chodor has been named the district’s data and communications administrator and Dean Elzinga will become the district’s network administrator.

Both Chodor and Elzinga will be paid $74,000 annually in their new 12-month positions.

Torres was the only board member to vote against promoting Chodor and Elzinga to their new positions.

School board president Marge Hubacek said that Crowley, Chodor, and Elzinga did great work this year.

“They kept us afloat all year,” Hubacek said.

“They kept us going without a technology director.”

District Court in Cleveland, this latest suit is different in that it specifically identifies individual local doctors as defendants, providing a way to prevent the suit from being consolidated in the multidistrict litigation in Cleveland.

“Our clients want to maintain control over their litigation,” Scharg said.

According to the lawsuit, there have been more than 351,000 opioid-related deaths since 1999 and that opioids account for more than 60 percent of drug overdoses in the nation.

While there are individual people whose lives and whose families’ lives are impacted by opioid abuse, villages, towns and cities across the country also a pay price, said Scharg, in terms of fire, police and hospital costs as well as the cost for rehabilitation.

“It does affect individual people, but it also affects the communities taking care of those people,” Scharg said. “[The lawsuit] is also about stopping this crisis and the flow of pills into these neighborhoods.”

Among those being sued are pharmaceutical giants Purdue Pharma, Cephalon Inc., Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Insys Therapeutics, Endo Health Solutions, Allergan and Mallinckrodt and distributors AmerisourceBergen Corporation, Cardinal Health Inc. and McKesson Corporation.

But the lawsuit also zeroes in on a pain clinic formerly located in both Melrose Park and Riverside, which was run Dr. Joseph Giacchino, whose medical license was revoked by the state of Illinois in 2011 for improperly prescribing controlled substances and providing medications to female patients in exchange for sex.

The pain clinic operated for many years out of an office inside a shopping center on North Avenue in Melrose Park. In 2013, Giacchino moved the clinic to an office at 28 E. Burlington St. in downtown Riverside.

Scharg called the pain clinic “one of the biggest pill mills in the country.”

Stripped of his medical license, Giacchino claimed to be the “administrator” of the clinic. Prescribing pain medications to patients were a pair of doctors, Paul C. Madison and William McMahon.

The state suspended McMahon’s medical license in October 2016 for prescribing controlled substances for non-therapeutic purposes. A month later McMahon’s status as a physician was made permanently inactive.

Madison had his medical license suspended in November 2016 for “unprofessional conduct” and improperly prescribing controlled substances. It remains suspended.

In addition to that disciplinary action, Madison is under a federal criminal indictment for insurance fraud.

In 2012, the U.S Attorney’s Office charged Madison with submitting more than $3 million in false medical bills to 10 insurance companies and a federal workers compensation program.

That case is still pending in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

Madison is also named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal criminal case filed in December 2016 in Massachusetts against top executives at Insys Therapeutics, one of the defendant companies in the most recent Cook County lawsuit.

The Cook County lawsuit summarizes Madison’s dealings with Insys, which ranged from arranging “sham speaking engagements” to promoting a fentanyl spray that was created to provide breakthrough pain relief for cancer patients.

Madison himself, the lawsuit states, was an anesthesiologist until 2016 but billed himself as a “pain management specialist.”

Most of his patients, however, were suffering from chronic non-cancer pain.

Madison’s speaking engagements, according to the lawsuit, largely were attended by Insys sales representatives or “occasionally” by doctors who were not cancer treatment specialists.

He allegedly was paid $87,000 by Insys which, according to the lawsuit, saw him as a “go-to physician.” Madison until 2016 was the top prescriber of the company’s fentanyl spray in Illinois, accounting for almost 60 percent of all of Insys’ fentanyl spray prescriptions in the state.

But, Madison didn’t confine his prescriptions to Illinoisans. In the state’s petition to suspend Madison’s medical license in 2016, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s top prosecutor stated that Madison’s opioid prescriptions were dispensed to patients in 11 states and that between Jan. 1, 2015 and Oct. 11, 2016 he had prescribed roughly 1.6 million doses of controlled substances.

The pain clinic, known as Riverside Pain Management, closed its doors in Riverside in 2017.

It’s terminum viae for LTHS Latin teacher Jolicoeur transformed program over three decades

atin is considered a dead language, but it is alive and well at Lyons Township High School.

That’s largely because of one person, teacher Laurie Jolicoeur, who is retiring in June after teaching Latin at LTHS for 33 years.

In that time she has taught Latin with a verve, style and passion that has left a mark on her students.

Jolicoeur, 56, came to LTHS when she was just 22 years old. She not only teaches Latin, she lives Latin, wearing jewelry and pins with classical motifs. One recent day she was wearing a necklace with a pendant showcasing the head of the Roman goddess Diana, which she bought in Italy.

“I collect classical pins and jewelry, because I like to wear things that are authentic,” Jolicoeur said.

Over the years, she has donned a toga and laurel wreath for the freshman experience night to promote Latin to incoming freshmen or at homecoming parades, where she also occasionally dressed as a gladiator. In her last days as a Latin teacher, Jolicoeur even got herself a temporary tattoo of the word “Latin” over a heart.

Jolicoeur, whom students call Magistra (Latin for teacher), has transferred her love for Latin to her students. First period Latin II students recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Latin to start every day.

“I’ve just never had a teacher more passionate about the subject that they’re teaching,” said senior Kate Beumer, who is a fourth-year Latin student and a consul (president) of the Latin Club, which Jolicoeur renamed this year Collegium Romanum, because she thought some students might think Latin Club was a club for Latino students.

For Jolicoeur, Latin is more than a language.

“I promote Latin as a lifestyle, I really do,” Jolicoeur says. “A Latin lifestyle means that you’re always looking for connections that you can make, and it means that you’re paying attention to how language is being used. Taking Latin and being in Latin is a lifestyle.”

The program now attracts more than 100 students, who are captivated by Jolicoeur’s passion for the language and love of the classics in general. a Latin or classical connection with something they’ve seen or experienced in their everyday life.

“It is not taught as a dusty, thisis-an-old-forgotten thing,” Jolicoeur said. “If it’s not dynamic, if it’s not relevant, then what is the point?”

Jolicoeur grew up in downstate Normal, the daughter of an Illinois State University math professor and a nurse.

In high school, where she was also involved in theater and was a drum major, she decided to take Latin because it was different.

“I basically never choose what everybody’s doing,” Jolicoeur said.

She loved her Latin teacher at Normal High School, Mary Ryder, but when she went off to Augustana College, becoming a teacher was the last thing on her mind. But after taking a literature in translation class as a freshman, she found she missed reading literature in the language it was written in and started taking Latin again.

“I started taking Latin again

and realized I loved studying anything classical, and I also knew I wanted to do something that connected me to other human beings,” Jolicoeur said.

After graduating from the University of Illinois she got a job teaching Latin part time at Barrington High School and a year later was hired at LT in 1985.

At that time there were only 35 to 50 students taking Latin at LT. From the beginning she made an impact.

“She made Latin cool; she made you feel special,” said Mary-Ellen Devitt, who was in Jolicoeur’s first Latin class at LTHS and attended a reunion on May 20 at the school in honor of Jolicoeur. “She hasn’t changed a bit. She’s still as beautiful and vivacious as she was at 22.”

This year 102 students are taking Latin at LTHS. Jolicoeur’s enthusiasm and love of Latin rubs off on her students and five of them have gone on to become Latin teachers themselves, as has one of her daughters.

“She just came in every day and was so passionate about Latin I just fell in love with the language and said, ‘I want to do this,’” said Anna Reiff, a 1995 graduate who now teaches Latin at Stagg High School. “She just has that magic.”

Reiff had been planning to take French at LTHS until she encountered Jolicoeur, wearing a toga and laurel wreath, at a night for eighth-graders.

Now that they are colleagues and friends. They go to conferences together and even presented a paper together a few years ago.

“I still get ideas from her,” Reiff said.

Jolicoeur thinks anyone can benefit by studying Latin. She says Latin helps to expand one’s vocabulary, since so many English words have Latin roots.

“I have never had any taste for having a program that was elitist,” said Jolicoeur, who doesn’t push or have much use for Advanced Placement Latin. “I think Latin is good for everyone.”

Jolicoeur says that all kinds of

students at LT take Latin.

“I have students who are like me, who take it because it’s weird,” Jolicoeur said. “It has this perception of nerdiness or whatever. I have students who love reading. I have students who love Harry Potter. I have students who love history, who always loved the Romans because they are into gladiators.”

Because most Latin students at LT take Latin for all four years of high school and Jolicoeur has mostly been the only Latin teacher at the school, many students have had her for all four years, developing an especially close bond.

“One of my worries about LT coming here was the fact that it’s a big school, but this definitely made it smaller, and it’s nice because we all have a relationship with her just beyond Latin,” senior Alexander Kuptel said.

Jolicoeur has taken students to conferences and on trips to Rome and Greece. This past spring she took 14 students to Rome.

While she’s loved her time at LTHS, it’s time to retire, she said.

“I’ve been here since I was 22,” Jolicoeur said. “I promised myself that I would retire before anybody got thinking about it, because I did not want to be one of those people that people wondered, ‘When is she going to retire?’”

In her 33 years at LT, Jolicoeur has shaped the Latin curriculum to her style, but now she feels it’s time for someone else to take up the torch.

“Nothing in the curriculum is anything that anyone else has done,” Jolicoeur said. “I feel as if I have shaped this piece of pottery, and now it is time to pass it on to the next artist.”

The next Latin teacher at LT will be Sean Sweany, who has taught at Mount Carmel High School for the last nine years.

Jolicoeur is so involved in teaching that she says that she has not made specific plans for retirement.

“I have to figure that out,” Jolicoeur said. “It’s just terribly bittersweet, so I don’t really know.”

Returning students know things will different next year without Jolicoeur.

“It’ll be a lot different,” said junior Owen Gieseke of having a new Latin teacher next year. “It will be weird, because we’ve had her for three years in a row.”

Dead reckoning

Dreaming of Riverside’s once-common lilacs

F

or four years, from January 2013 until March 2017, doctors at Riverside Pain Management reportedly dispensed opioids in such quantities that the state of Illinois eventually yanked the medical licenses of all of the doctors who worked there.

You’d have thought that the clinic, which also called Melrose Park and River Grove home during its long and controversial history, would have been chloroformed back in 2011 when the state revoked the medical license of its owner, Dr. Joseph Giacchino.

But, Giacchino found a way to keep the clinic open. He would serve as the clinic’s “administrator” while hiring other doctors to do the examining and prescribing.

A complaint filed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in November 2016, seeking to suspend the license of the clinic’s primary prescriber, Dr. Paul C. Madison, included some jaw-dropping details including the following: ■ In less than two years, Madison had prescribed 1.6 million doses of opioids – 70 percent of which were highly addictive Schedule II controlled substances, like Hydrocodone (988,000 dosage units alone) and Oxycodone.

He also prescribed tens of thousands of dosage units of Schedule IV controlled substances, highly addictive drugs like Soma and Clonazepam, during that time period.

■ Madison had authorized more than 30,000 dosage units of controlled substances to patients in nearly a dozen states, including ones who lived as far away as California and Florida.

■ That examinations prior to prescribing opioids were perfunctory ■ That despite not having authorization to treat patients, Giacchino had sexual contact with at least one patient at the Riverside clinic and that Madison knew it.

■ That Madison was the state of Illinois’ highest-volume prescriber of a fentanyl spray called Subsys, which was created expressly to treat pain experienced by cancer patients. Madison was responsible for about 60 percent of all Subsys prescriptions in Illinois, and 95 percent of those receiving the prescriptions did not have cancer.

Since 2012, Madison has been under criminal indictment for insurance fraud and he’s also an unindicted coconspirator in a federal criminal lawsuit against executives of the firm responsible for marketing Subsys.

So, it was gratifying last week when a new lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court against opioid manufacturers and distributors also specifically zeroed in on the activities of the doctors at Riverside Pain Management, seeking for them to be held personally liable for their role in an opioid abuse epidemic that has swept the nation in the past decade.

It’s far past time for those doctors to face a reckoning beyond losing their licenses and having to pay fines.

We’re glad that the clinic no longer calls Riverside – or any place else for that matter – home. But we’re equally glad that the clinic and its doctors weren’t simply able to fade into the background with the closure of the operation.

I

f I ever get around to putting together my “Growing Up Riverside” anthology or whatever it will be called, I will have to include the following topic: the flowers of Riverside.

The first flowers I can remember growing up on Selborne Road (the street that at one time was spelled “Selbourne”) are those pretty little yellow flowers that everybody seemed to have growing in their lawns.

It took quite a few years before I learned they actually were weeds. How could something so pretty as a dandelion be a weed?

I liked to pick them and when the flower turned into a little fluffy globe. It was fun to blow them and watch the fur fly. It was then I learned why I would sneeze around the pretty flower.

Can you say allergy?

My dad didn’t like dandelions. He was fussy about his lawn, and I could earn a penny for each dandelion I picked. My mother was more resourceful. She would go and pick dandelion leaves when they were young plants and, voila, they appeared on the dinner table in a salad, a little bitter but good nonetheless, when covered with vinegar and oil.

But, I really miss all the lilacs that used to produce a

wonderful fragrance that would permeate the air when the bushes were in full bloom.

We live across from a triangular park, I don’t think it has a name (a subject for another column, park names), and it had –yes, I said “had” -- beautiful lilac bushes on all three corners.

Then one day they were gone, ripped out.

I don’t know why, because they were very healthy. Whose idea it was, I don’t know, and I was too young to seek out the truth of why the bushes were removed.

They were a great place to hide during a neighborhood game of hide-and-seek, and a great flower to bring to the teacher.

There are still quite few lilacs around, but not like there used to be. We planted a lilac on our property, but it seems to be a slow grower or maybe just lazy.

How about buttercups? Remember when you would tickle people under the chin with the flower? Where have all the flowers gone?

So now we plant and try to restore the beauty that I remember growing up Selborne Road. To all who take the time to plant and beautify, thanks. I enjoy your efforts. Maybe a lilac bush would be nice, too. Mmm, that would smell nice!

Stanley F. Patek, 62 Certified public accountant Stanley F. Patek, age 62, of Brookfield, died May 21, 2018.

Mr. Patek was born Oct. 7, 1955 and was the owner of Patek & Associates, an accounting firm in Riverside.

He was a proud member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, former treasurer and board member of Seguin Services Inc., band leader of Good Time Sounds, member of Titans S.A.C., treasurer of the Sportmen’s Bowling League and member of the Monday Night Alphatek Golf League. In 2014, Mr. Patek was inducted into the Chicago 16-Inch Softball

Hall of Fame.

Mr. Patek was the husband and best friend of Christine Patek (nee Vanerka); the son of Trudy Patek (nee Gajec) and the late Joseph Patek Sr.; the sonin-law of Robert and Frances Vanerka; STANLEY F. New STEM program from page 1 It got the job done.

But soon enough, a large swath of the asphalt playground will be excavated to make way for the new gymnasium, which is part of a $35 million construction effort undertaken by Brookfield-LaGrange Park District 95 with the support of taxpayers, who approved a $20 million bond referendum last year.

“In approving that referendum, the community invested in you, the students of District 95, and all of our future students,” said S.E. Gross Principal Ryan Evans at the outdoor ceremony, which was attended by students, staff, school board members and architects.

“They have made sure that the school’s growth will match the growing demand to live and raise a family in these communities,” Evans added. “[S.E. Gross School] will see facilities that finally match the enrollment of our school.”

District officials held a similar ceremony at Brook Park Elementary School in LaGrange Park earlier the same day. Plans call for a new gymnasium and new classroom wing addition there.

In addition to the S.E. Gross gymnasium, which Evans said will be available for community use after school hours, the improvements to the existing school include remaking the wing of the building that formerly housed the district offices, the music room, industrial arts room and the auditorium.

While construction at Brook Park Elementary School in LaGrange Park will begin in earnest in June, demolition work has already started inside S.E. Gross School. Going away for good will be the old-fashioned, two-story auditorium, which spanned the second and third floors of the wing being renovated.

A new “cafetorium” on the ground floor of that wing will do double duty as a performance space and a lunchroom, capable of seating the 150 to 160 students ex-

pected to comprise middle school grade levels in coming years.

The second floor will house a two-story band room as well as an art room and conference room.

And, officially, industrial arts – also known as wood shop – won’t be part of the middle school elective curriculum moving forward.

The program’s longtime teacher, Tim Rost, is retiring and the district has decided to pull the plug for good.

Teachers for such classes are hard to find, but faced with an op-

portunity to move the curriculum in a new direction, school officials leapt at the chance.

“A lot of the philosophy [industrial arts] taught will be brought into this program,” Evans said.

“They aren’t so very different. You are going to be getting your hands dirty. You are going to be building.

You’re going to be trying and failing and succeeding, reworking.

That’s what they did in the shop.

That’s what they’re going to do here, but incorporating the technology piece.”

On the third floor of the renovated wing, the district plans to create a STEM lab and will use the next year to explore and adopt the curriculum for it.

The district has already identified the person who will lead the STEM program, Megan Hacholski, a science teacher at Simmons School in Oak Lawn. The school board still needs to formally approve hiring Hacholski, Evans said “She came forward with a multiyear plan of how she would go about developing this space from beginning to end,” Evans said.

“And her vision and our vision aligned very well.”

During the 2018-19 school year, while the STEM lab will still be under construction and the curriculum is being developed, the semester-long elective class will focus on digital skills, using a Google suite of apps as well as coding and programming.

According to Evans, the district is hoping in the future – perhaps five years out -- to create a second STEM lab by repurposing two adjacent computer labs on the third floor. By increasing the footprint of the program, Evans said the goal would be for every student in the school to be exposed to the STEM curriculum and not just as an elective.

“As we build out the program, the goal would be that all students are exposed to the space throughout the school year,” Evans said.

“You want kids exposed to this.”

The new spaces and gymnasium, according to the district’s construction timeline, ought to be ready for use for the 2019-20 school year.

RBHS softball standout chooses Air Force Academy Nora Dachota will report for basic training in late June

he Class of 2018 graduates of Riverside-Brookfield High School Class will likely spend the summer with activities like working at a job, playing sports, partying with friends or taking a family vacation.

RBHS senior Nora Dachota’s itinerary is different.

“I leave for basic training on June 28,” said Dachota, who will be attending the United States Air Force Academy. “It hasn’t hit me yet that I’ll be graduating from RB soon.”

Dachota’s athletic high school career came to a close last week when the RBHS softball team lost 5-0 to host Hinsdale South in a regional semifinal.

The setback served as a disappointing end to a rewarding experience with the Bulldogs.

NORA DACHOTA “The Hinsdale RBHS senior South game was a good representation of the whole season,” Dachota said.

“We made six errors and let in five runs.

Our mindset was weak at times this season.

We talked about it and tried to make improvements, but it was a struggle.”

However, to steal a line from Frederick Douglass, if there is no struggle, there is no progress.

Dachota experienced her share of ups and downs in softball. As the Bulldogs’ top starting pitcher in 2016 and 2017, her role was reduced this spring for a variety of reasons.

“I missed more games and practices than usual this season because I was making visits to the Air Force Academy and I had my wisdom teeth removed,” Dachota said. “In addition, Nadia [Ranieri] and Tori [Blood] became really good pitchers.”

Consequently, Dachota contributed when and where she could as a no-nonsense pitcher, utility infielder and designated player.

“RB softball was a great experience overall. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Dachota said. “I just wish it didn’t end with such a downer of a game against Hinsdale South. We were a very close team.”

RBHS senior Nora Dachota was a key contributor for the Bulldogs’ varsity softball team the last three years. She’s headed for the U.S. Air Force Academy next as an imcoming cadet.

Dachota strived to develop her game as a multi-sport athelte. Prior to softball, she was on the cross country and basketball teams as an underclassman; however, two ACL injuries was a major factor in her just sticking to softball.

Dachota has developed off the field as well.

Taking five AP classes this year, she finished with 4.0 grade point average. She’s a member of the National Honor Society as well.

Why one of the nation’s service academies?

“As soon as I started talking about colleges with my counselors, teachers and parents, I never really felt like the traditional course was for me,” Dachota said. “I felt like something would be missing in my life if I went the ‘four years of college and then get a job’ route. I really wanted to serve my country and I know the U.S. service academies offered outstanding academics as well.

“Honestly, I didn’t even think I had a chance of getting in,” she added. “The service academies are very selective. It worked out very well.”

Dachota considered the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy, with a lean towards the former. Her preference changed when she experienced the Air Force Academy on a three-day visit.

“The Air Force Academy asked me to attend a program on campus which greatly influenced my decision,” Dachota sad. “I fell in love with the campus and strong academics. I’d like to study in one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) programs.”

She also hopes to play on the Air Force Academy softball club team.

Choosing Air Force over Navy wasn’t nearly as involved as gaining admittance.

“The process started last year,” Dachota

said. “In addition to filling out the regular application with an essay, I had to get a nomination from a United States senator or congressman. I got one from Senator Tammy Duckworth for the Naval Academy and Congressman Luis Gutierrez nominated me for both the Air Force and Naval Academies.”

Dachota also had to complete a medical form called the DoDMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board) and a Candidate Fitness Assessment which includes push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, mile-run shuttle run and basketball throw.

“It’s kind of funny because none of my family is in the military. There is no family influence,” Dachota said. “I really didn’t know too much about it. It just came from own desire to serve my country. I remember going to Veterans Day assemblies. When I heard veterans tell their stories, it really inspired me.”

Graffiti spree hits Brookfield Brookfield police reported a rash of incidents last week involving both gang-type graffiti spray-painted on garages and other structures and random spray-painting of vehicles parked on the street overnight.

The first incidents reported last week were on May 21 and 22. Gang graffiti was found sprayed in blue paint at the entrance and inside the Congress Park tunnel. Other gang graffiti was discovered on overhead garage doors in the 3200 and 3500 blocks of Harrison Avenue and the 3500 block of Madison Avenue. Someone also spray-painted a fence in the 3500 block of Blanchan Avenue.

On May 23, Brookfield took six reports involving vehicles whose windows, doors and mirrors had been sprayed with either red or green paint. Incidents were reported in the 3100 and 3200 blocks of Oak Avenue, the 3100 block of Prairie Avenue and the 3100 block of Sunnyside Avenue.

Riverside senior scammed A 74-year-old Riverside woman fell victim to a scam earlier in May after responding to an email purportedly sent to her by Facebook, stating that her computer had been hacked and asking that she call a phone number to resolve the issue.

The victim called the number and spoke to a man who advised her to buy four Google Play cards and two Apple gift cards in the total amount of $1,800 and to read back the numbers on the cards once they were purchased.

The woman did as instructed and stayed on the line with the man the entire time it took to make the purchases and relay the card info to him. According to police, the woman didn’t provide any personal information. Her computer had not been hacked.

The victim realized she may have fallen for a scam and called police on May 17 to report it. Police attempted to get the Google Play cards canceled, but were unable to do so.

Detectives traced the phone number to California, a number reportedly used in connection with many fraud complaints in that state. Riverside police have filed a complaint on behalf of the victim with the FCC, according to a press release.

Restaurant window smashed Brookfield police responded to Fiesta Margarita, 3755 Grand Blvd., on the morning of May 25 after a passerby called to report that a 4-by-6-foot plate-glass window had been broken.

Police said it did not appear anyone gained entry, but inside underneath the broken window they found a green, buttondown shirt with a Coyne College logo on it wrapped around a softball-sized rock.

IN REMEMBRANCE

Public indecency North Riverside police responded to the Salt Creek bike trail near 12th Avenue on the afternoon of May 18 after a 33-year-old woman reported that a man had exposed himself to her as she rode her bike along the trail about 1 p.m.

The victim stated the man was standing off to the side of the path near the river.

As the victim approached, the man turned around. His shirt was open and his pants were down around his knees, exposing his genitals. He didn’t say anything, according to the police report, but gave the woman a “devious grin.”

The man was described as a white male in his mid- to upper-30s, with short brown hair, a dark tan, well-defined abdominal muscles and wearing a light-colored button-down shirt and jeans.

Gotta buy the whole pack North Riverside police charged a 41-yearold Chicago man with assault and criminal damage to property on May 19 after he allegedly threatened a security guard at Tony’s Finer Foods over his failure to properly purchase a pack of cigarettes.

According to the police report, the man asked for a pack of cigarettes, which cost $10.99. When the employee handed the pack over, the man reportedly opened it up, took out two cigarettes and tossed the employee a dollar.

When the employees told the man he needed to buy the entire pack, the man re portedly became irate and threatened to “lay out” a security guard who had come to assist.

Car stolen from driveway A resident of the 300 block of Lionel Road, Riverside, contacted police on May 23 to report that a 2006 Acura RSX was stolen from the driveway of his home.

One witness told police the vehicle was last seen on the evening of May 22. Another witness who lives on the block stated that, early on May 23, he saw a dark colored van parked in his driveway next to his vehicle.

When he turned on an exterior light, the van backed out of his drive and headed south on Lionel Road.

The witness’ vehicle was not disturbed, according to police.
