If the June 13 supercell storm that uprooted trees, downed power lines, damaged cars and ripped the roofs off of buildings is any indication of the hazards that await communities on a warming planet, a gathering of elected officials held June 23 was an indication of what local leaders plan to do about it.

Mayors from at least 10 west suburbs, including Riverside President Joseph Ballerine, met inside a conference room at Triton College in River Grove and took turns signing a memorandum of understanding that signals their commitment to joining the Cross-Community Climate Collaborative (C4).

The memorandum the mayors signed and which most of their village boards have approved, isn’t legally binding and there’s no cost for any suburb to join. Participating suburbs include Broadview, Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Riverside, Maywood, Berwyn, Bellwood, Westchester and River Grove. Other suburbs, including Brookfield, may join in the weeks and months to come.

Riverside’s village board voted 5-0 on June 16 to join C4. The village board’s representatives to the C4 working group – also called the cross-community core team – will be trustees Aberdeen Marsh-Ozga and Cristin Evans.

“This is a great opportunity to work with our neighboring communities,” Marsh-Ozga said at the June 16 meeting of the Riverside Village Board. “We found out just from recent events [after the supercell storm], when we work together, it’s always possible to achieve more, and this kind of sharing of information and providing access to information can only help us move toward those goals in a more effective manner.”

The C4 initiative is spearheaded by Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, Oak Park Village President Vicki Scaman and River Forest Village President Cathy Adduci. Politicians from other levels of government also attended the signing ceremony, including Senate President Don Harmon (D-39th), Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford (D-

According to the C4 memorandum, the initiative is designed to “bring together BIPOC [Black, Indigenous, and people of color] and non-minority communities across income lines to share ideas, secure resources, and drive large-scale projects within and across communities that achieve agreed upon greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, equity, and sustainability goals.”

Communities signing on to the memorandum commit to a range of initiatives. In addition to publicly endorsing the C4, they also agree to C4’s goal of a 45-percent greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030 from 2010 levels and 100-percent reduction by 2050.

In addition, village officials in participating suburbs agree to participate in monthly “cross-community” team meetings, establish a sustainability working group or commission, and raise awareness about the C4 initiative, among other responsibilities.

Thompson said although suburbs aren’t committing any financial resources to C4, funding to pay for constant services and other costs could come from a variety of other places.

She said the West Central Municipal Conference (WCMC), a government council that represents the 40 municipalities that comprise Chicago’s inner ring suburbs, is a possible source for either direct funding or a leverage for accessing other funding sources.

Participating governments pay a membership fee to be in the conference.

The WCMC is one of 10 Chicago area government councils that have adopted the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus’ Greenest Region Compact, which aims “for enhanced quality of life for residents; protection and stewardship of the environment and sustainable economic vitality,” according to the Caucus’ website.

The C4 signing ceremony comes a few months after the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a United Nations body comprising global experts on human-induced global warming, released its latest report.

“The [IPCC report] tells us that by the year 2030, we have to reduce global emissions by 45 percent from 2010 levels,” Gary Cuneen, the executive director of Seven Generations Ahead, said on June 23.

“If we don’t do that, then we run the risk of having global temperatures that increase by 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial times,” he added. “Now, if that happens, they tell us we are going to have a catastrophe on a level that is just going to be unprecedented.”

Cuneen said that the June 13 supercell storm that struck the Chicago area is just one extreme weather event within a week full of them — from monsoons in India and Bangladesh, to 100-degree temperatures around the country to “massive, massive wildfires” in Spain.

“Who knows what is going to happen next week or today,” Cuneen said. “All we know is that it’s just going to continue to happen unless we address this issue.”

Davis survives closest primary race since 1996 Congressman beats Kina Collins 52%-45% to win Dem nomination in 7th District

On June 28, Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th) emerged from a conference room inside of the National Association of Letter Carriers building in Chicago, where his election night party was taking place, with the face of an exhausted heavyweight champion fighter surprised the match went so long.

About a half-hour earlier, the longtime congressman’s campaign party had been rather muted, with some staffers nervously whispering into cellphones and volunteers looking anxiously at a projector screen showing a local TV news anchor process election data.

When the Chicago Sun-Times projected a victory for the congressman the room of several dozen supporters exhaled and cheered before shouting, “Danny! Danny!

Danny!”

Unofficial vote totals as of July 5, with all precincts reporting, showed Davis with 52 percent of the vote compared to Collins’ 45 percent.

Davis said the primary election was his narrowest margin of victory since he first ran for Congress nearly 30 years ago in 1996.

“I think the first race I ran, I got 32 percent of the vote, but of course it was five or six of us in that race,” he said.

Allen Evans, an activist with the Peacemaker Coalition, a group of community groups focusing on addressing violence in Austin, said he’s known Davis since he was a Chicago alderman and has volunteered on his campaigns since that first congressional race in 1996. Evans said he didn’t think this primary election would be so close.

“Usually, young people don’t vote,” he

said. “So, I thought the senior citizens would have brought him in. I thought there would have been a much greater gap.”

In addition to Collins, Davis faced a challenge from Denarvis Mendenhall, an Air Force veteran and compliance officer for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mendenhall had garnered about 2 percent of the vote, as of July 5.

Collins, who also ran for the 7th District congressional seat in 2020, was backed by a range of national organizations, including Indivisible, Justice Democrats and the National Organization for Women.

The sprawling 7th District stretches along the I-290 corridor from the lakefront to I-294 and south down the I-90 corridor to 75th Street. It includes the Proviso Township portion of North Riverside, west of 9th Avenue.

Davis secured endorsements from national politicians including President Joe Biden and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but

Collins outspent him by nearly $140,000, according to campaign finance data from the Federal Elections Commission.

As with her campaign message last year, Collins ran as a more progressive alternative to the veteran Davis.

Tumia Rumero, Davis’s chief of staff, said she wasn’t surprised the election was so close, given the low turnout. She said internal polling had the congressman besting Collins by 20 percent, “but that was based on a higher turnout.”

In his remarks to supporters, Davis said he looks forward to helping Democrats stave off Republicans in the November midterm elections and is focusing on the Jan. 6 Commission investigation and the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe vs.

Wade, among other issues.

“It’s been a hard fight, but the victory is sweet,” he said.

Raines-Welch, Kantas win primaries to fill judicial vacancies With no GOP opponents filing, their seats on the Cook County Circuit Court bench are secure

ShawnTe Raines-Welch and Nicholas Kantas are on their way to the bench. They both won their respective Democratic primaries for two vacancies in in the 4th Judicial Subcircuit on June 28 -- and they’ll face no Republican opponents in the November general election.

Raines-Welch, who is married to Emanuel “Chris” Welch, the speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, won a fourway race in the Democratic primary with 34.89 percent of the vote with all but three precincts reporting.

Riverside resident Chloe Pedersen, who is the niece of Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, finished second with 27.5 percent of the vote, 1,715 votes behind RainesWelch, according to unofficial totals posted by the Cook County Clerk on June 29.

Former Brookfield resident Jerry Barrido, a public defender, finished third with 24 percent of the vote. Patrick Campanelli fin-

ished fourth with 14.18 percent of the vote.

The 4th Judicial Subcircuit includes all of Brookfield, Riverside and North Riverside and stretches from Palos Township on the south to Leyden Township on the north.

Raines-Welch vastly outspent her opponents during the campaign. Her campaign raised more than $540,000, including contributions of $50,000 or $25,000 from the members of Chris Welch’s House leadership team, according to campaign finance disclosures reported on the Illinois Sunshine website.

Pedersen raised about $43,000 while Barrido raised a little more than $42,000, most of which came from Barrido himself.

Raines-Welch’s large financial advantage paid for a barrage of direct mail that her campaign sent to likely voters throughout the west suburban subcircuit. Some local households reported as many as three or four direct mail pieces a week from Welch’s campaign in the final weeks of the campaign. Name recognition is often key in

judicial elections.

“She bought this election,” said Riverside resident Amy Jacksic, who voted for Pedersen.

But Raines-Welch didn’t rely entirely on advertising. Like other candidates, she rang doorbells and knocked on doors. That door-to-door campaigning won her the vote of Brookfield resident Jessica Thuente, who said she was impressed by RainesWelch’s strong pro-abortion rights views.

Raines-Welch is a partner in the law firm Ancel Glink where she practices municipal law.

Kantas, a longtime prosecutor who is a supervisor in the juvenile division of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, defeated fellow assistant state’s attorney Amanda Moira Pillsbury in a two-person race for the other vacancy in the 4th Subcircuit. With all but three precincts reporting, Kantas had 13,424 votes (55 percent) to 10,971 (45 percent) for Pillsbury.

Raines-Welch and Kantas teamed up during the campaign. At polling places, voters

were handed glossy palm cards featuring photos of the two. Both also benefited from the support of the Lyons Township Democratic Organization, which is led by state Sen. Steve Landek.

Aguilar wins Dem race for Cook County Board In another Democratic primary race, incumbent Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar (D-Cicero), who was appointed to service the 16th District in 2020, replacing Jeffrey Tobolski, who resigned before pleading guilty to a federal bribery charge, defeated Leticia “Letty” Garcia of Berwyn.

With all but one precinct reporting, Aguilar had 8,956 votes (54 percent) to 7,617 votes (46 percent) for Garcia.

In the general election, Aguilar will face the Republican nominee, Brookfield resident Kimberly Jagielski, a Cook County probation officer.

Truck crashes into circle, damaging WWII marker

Brookfield police charged a 35-year-old North Riverside man with drunken driving and cited him for driving on a sidewalk and damage to village property after he allegedly drove his 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck into the Veterans Memorial Circle on July 3 at 1:48 a.m., damaging the World War II memorial marker.

Police responding to the scene reported observing the driver inside the cab of the truck, which had sustained heavy frontend damage. Asked what had happened, the driver reportedly told police he “missed his turn.”

According to police, the truck was traveling southbound on Maple Avenue and drove straight into the circle. The driver reportedly failed field sobriety tests but refused to submit to a breath test.

He was also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. The impact of the crash reportedly pulled the monument from the ground.

Drag racing at 98 mph

North Riverside police charged two men with aggravated speeding and street racing after an officer on patrol reported observing a Dodge Challenger and a Buick Encore drag racing at 98 mph eastbound on Cermak Road from 17th Avenue on June 27 just before midnight.

The officer was able to pull over both cars in the 7500 block of Cermak Road and arrested the drivers, a 26-year-old Chicago man and a 23-year-old man whose address was not provided by police.

The arresting office also reported recovering a loaded .40-caliber pistol next to the driver’s seat of the Dodge Challenger, whose driver possessed a concealed-carry permit.

Pedestrian struck by car seriously injured A 45-year-old North Riverside man sustained serious injuries after he was struck

by a 2019 Nissan driven by a 47-year-old Lombard woman as he tried to cross Cermak Road west of 10th Avenue on June 29 at about 10 p.m., police have reported.

According to the driver and witnesses, the man ran northbound out into the eastbound lanes of Cermak Road, roughly opposite from the entrance/exit to Aldi, where he was struck by the Nissan, which was headed east.

The impact of the crash sent the man into the westbound lanes of traffic, where paramedics treated him before taking him to Loyola University Medical Center. The driver was not cited.

Scam averted A Brookfield woman who had withdrawn $17,000 from the bank in response to a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson in need of bail money was prevented from following through with the payoff after her husband rightly determined the call was a scam.

After talking with her husband, the in-

tended victim contacted her grandson, who assured her he was in no trouble and was in Indiana. The phone call from the would-be scammer came from a number in Canada.

Catalytic converter stolen A resident of the 4400 block of Prairie Avenue, Brookfield, called police on the morning of June 27 to report that the catalytic converter had been removed from his 2003 Honda CR-V, which had been parked on the street overnight.

Chair heist Brookfield police responded to a residence in the 9400 block of Congress Park Avenue on July 3 at 1:20 p.m. after a resident called to report that someone had just stolen a stack of six lawn chairs from the parkway in front of his home.

The victim told police he’d left the chairs, described as having aluminum frames with faded beige fabric, there two hours earlier.

What inspired you to open the business?

The Urban Mutt has been up and running as a retail store for almost 13 years, but it actually began as a web series where we explored various pet friendly businesses and places in Chicago with our dog Guinness. When we started hosting and participating in events, people were always asking “where’s your store located?” Eventually that (and our love of pets) inspired us to open our first store in Berwyn and then our second in La Grange shortly thereafter. We moved our Berwyn location here in March and are super excited to continue our story here in Brookfield!

What is your best-selling product/service?

We pride ourselves on having a very curated selection of products at the store. We spend a lot of time learning about the products we carry and run a majority of the items past our quality control team…our dogs Guinness, Peanut, Foxy

and our recently departed Bear. One of the things that people come looking for the most are Pet Birthday products. We have a large selection of cakes, cupcakes, cookies and toys to celebrate your furry pal’s special day. Plus, Cynthia makes a variety of birthday bandanas and hats that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s these unique qualities that make the store special and set it apart from other pet supply retailers.

What is the best part about being in Brookfield?

The best surprise so far has been the incredible community response that we’ve received.

Honestly, we didn’t know a lot about Brookfield before we moved here, but we knew we had customers here. However, we really started to notice the “neighborhood community” vibe as we were renovating the building. People were constantly stopping by to tell us how excited they were that we were opening here. Now that we’re open, we get a lot of new customers from word of mouth and return shoppers eager to “keep it local.” That’s awesome, and it’s about the best thing you can hope for as a small, independent business because there is so much competition these days from online sellers.

Spending local impacts the whole community

in a positive way, and it seems like that’s a priority here in Brookfield.

What is your favorite thing about your business?

The thing we probably enjoy the most about our business is seeing all the various pets that come through (no offense humans, we love you guys too!). All these dogs and cats have their own personalities, and it’s really cool to get to know them, especially the shy ones who eventually come around and become your best friend. More importantly, we’re able to really get an understanding of our four-legged customers and that allows us to make better recommendations on food, Now open in Brookfield, The Urban Mutt is a cozy version of a treats, etc. Our staff (who are pretty darn full service retail shop for your pups. The four ramshackle tennis courts at Ehlert Park on Brookfield’s south end will get a facelift this fall after elected officials on June 27 gave the go-ahead to have the improvements designed and put the project out to bid.

Recreation Director Stevie Ferrari told the Landmark she hoped the project could be bid in August with construction completed in the fall.

When complete, the newly resurfaced courts will be striped not only for tennis but also for pickle ball, a game that’s proven to be a hit at the new tennis courts at Candy Cane Park on the village’s far north side.

The improvement at Ehlert Park will also be the first real work to address the surface of the tennis courts in more than three decades, according to Village Trustee Kit Ketchmark, who was an avid tennis player back in the late 1980s.

Between 1985 and 1988, said Ketchmark the village decided against a full reconstruction of the court surface and went with a cheaper solution that involved laying down a layer of artificial turf and sand to simulate a clay surface. Ketchmark was not a fan.

“I remember when they were resurfaced and hated it because of the sand that would trail the ball,” Ketchmark said. “I wear contacts, making it hard to play. We would generally go to LaGrange to play.”

At the village board’s meeting on June 27, Ferrari told elected officials she had gotten formal confirmation that the state was finally releasing the $200,000 earmarked in the state’s 2019 capital budget by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development.

At the time, the cost to resurface the tennis courts was estimated to be about $160,000.

Three years and one pandemic later, the cost estimate has risen to $270,000, Ferrari said, which will require the village to fund the remaining $70,000.

Moreover, the state has informed the village that the funds for the tennis courts won’t be disbursed until 2023. As a result, Ferrari asked trustees to consent to using $200,000 from the general operating fund for the tennis court project. When the village receives the funding from the state for the tennis court project in 2023, the money will reimburse the general fund and be used subsequently for road improvements.

Hitchcock Design Group, which Brookfield has utilized as its consultant for park improvement projects over that past 15 years, will design the improvements and manage construction of the project, which also will include new fencing.

Bids received later this year will go to the village board, which will vote to award a construction contract to the low bidder.

Over the next week, volunteers at the Riverside Arts Center will be preparing the west wall of the building at 32 E. Quincy St. in preparation for the painting of a new mural by Dutch artist Collin van der Sluijs beginning July 10.

While the mural will no doubt go off without a hitch, weather permitting, there has been in recent weeks a little behindthe-scenes drama, which village trustees are expected to resolve at their meeting on July 7.

In talks with the village regarding their plans for the mural, Riverside Arts Center officials learned that the village’s code of ordinances was not crystal clear when it came to murals, which aren’t mentioned anywhere in the municipal code.

Even though there has been a mural on the wall for decades and others exist in the downtown business district, the sign code doesn’t address them, and on July 7 trustees are expected to add language to the sign code clarifying that rules regarding size, etc., don’t apply to art.

“I think it’s an indication of the importance of the Riverside Arts Center to downtown Riverside,” said Liz Chilsen, the center’s executive director about village officials acting quickly to make the mural a reality. “The muralist is internationally known and it will bring a lot of positive attention to the village and, I hope, spur economic activity in the downtown in a good way.”

Amending the code is just one way the village is demonstrating its support for the mural project. At their meeting on June 16, village trustees also voted to revive the village’s dormant business façade improvement grant program, which is administered through the Riverside Economic Development Commission.

The Riverside Arts Center’s mural project budget is just under $12,000, according to the application submitted to the village.

On June 29, members of the Riverside Economic Development Commission recommended approving Riverside Arts Center’s grant application for $5,000.

Obtaining the grant “puts us really close to reaching what we need” to pay for the mural project, Chilsen told the Landmark in a phone interview last week.

“I’m so gratified by the willingness and excitement on the part of the village to make this happen,” Chilsen said.

Reaching a breaking point

rookfield’s Fourth of July parade stepped off at its usual hour – 10 a.m. – and wound its way down Grand Boulevard, packed on both sides as it always is with kids lining the street to collect candy and other items handed out by the participants.

Just as in Riverside and North Riverside, the morning of July 4 was something of a comfort. It was the second parade since the pandemic and it went off without a hitch – maybe shorter in length, but normal.

Little did we know as we turned onto Grand Boulevard and headed south from Garfield Avenue at 10 a.m. that about 30 miles away in Highland Park, a maniac with a high-powered rifled was gunning down people at the July 4 parade there.

How much more of this are we going to take?

The easy availability of guns, including assault-style rifles, and their proliferation has made this nation less safe and more violent.

You can now add Fourth of July parades to the list of places like movie theaters, grocery stores, churches and schools where people no longer can be considered safe from America’s devotion to firearms.

It feels like we’re reaching a breaking point, and we are ever clearer on the fact that, in America, no one is safe from gun violence.

That’s not freedom, folks.

A new climate

This summer has been a scorcher, temperature-wise, and has already come with one violent storm that caused a considerable amount of damage to trees and property in our villages.

Climate change is another reality of life in the 21st century that our national leaders seem keen to ignore, so it was heartening to see so many local leaders step up last month to sign on the CrossCommunity Climate Collaborative, or C4, for short.

The stated goals of C4 are varied but include a pledge to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions 100-percent from 2010 levels by 2050. Riverside has already signed on to C4 and it appears Brookfield will follow suit as early as this month. We encourage North Riverside to consider this as well.

Local governments can be leaders in demonstrating that it’s possible and beneficial to reduce our carbon footprints, and those joining C4 are keen to prove that. Right now, they are putting together a core working group, which will work with a pair of consulting firms to identify opportunities and funding to make these goals real.

Nothing will happen overnight, but we hope C4 will gain momentum and roll out initiatives to help make our communities greener and more sustainable. This is a good start.

No excuses, get out and vote

ust when I thought I was through with primary election 2022, I find I’m not even after disposing of the last of the literature.

Call it quirky, but I enjoy after elections to go back and read the results and give my own analysis as to why people vote as they do. What really amazes me is the number of people who don’t vote and the variety of reasons. They will call you for jury duty (no). My vote doesn’t really count (I know an incumbent who said his son told him he was too busy. I would like to have heard that father-son conversation). I didn’t have time (How much time do you need? There is even early voting on Sundays, you can go to church, pray to make the right choice and go vote). I don’t like to declare myself (I get that, even though I don’t mind declaring my party preference). All of that being written, I was still amazed at the lack of voter turnout.

The Cook County Clerk’s website provides results where you can see the number of registered voters and the percentage who voted. It is very disheartening. In Riverside Township, voter turnout for the contest between hometown

incumbent Mike Zalewski and challenger Abdelnasser Rashid, voter turnout was 13.74 percent.

While not everyone wants to step up and run for office, you can at least vote for those who are willing to give their time.

Also this year there was a shortage of election judges. I know the hours are long, but the pay is decent and it is very rewarding -- that comes from one who has been an election judge for almost 40 years. I really enjoyed it.

I encourage high schoolers, college students and retirees to consider it for the next election. It is an interesting process and you will be surprised at what goes on when the polls close. Every ballot needs to be accounted for and judges are held accountable for what happens in their precincts.

So while I think I can put the primary election to rest, I am already seeing it all starting up again for the next election in November. People, here’s a little advice: Spend less time tearing down your opponents, and tell me what you have done and why you are running.

Tell me what you plan to do, and if you’re not sure, I have a few things on my list for you to see.

A glimmer of hope I was so happy to read your editorial, “An example to follow” (The Landmark View, June 29). You praised all of the progressive actions by the village of Oak Park throughout the decades from housing to gun laws. You especially praised their reaction to the overturning of Roe vs. Wade.

As a teacher at Riverside-Brookfield High School for almost four decades and a resident of Riverside for over three decades, I have seen many changes in citizens’ viewpoints.

When Oak Park and River Forest High School started their Gay-Straight Alliance Club, I read about it in their local paper. I thought it was a terrific idea to create a safe place for students to dis-

cuss these kinds of issues.

When I brought it up at a faculty meeting -- I think it was the late 1990s or early 2000s -- I was almost laughed out of the room. The superintendent at the time said, “Riverside is not Oak Park.”

I replied, “Truer words were never spoken.”

But after a lawsuit was filed by a gay student who was harassed in class, the school changed its tune. They started this club and hired an openly gay counselor. I was proud to see that the club remained intact even when half the clubs were slashed in 2011, due to the massive failure of a tax referendum.

I leave potential out of the matter. A few weeks later, though, in the second trimester, draw fetal blood and now the connections have been made. The fetus violently withdraws from the needle.

To support abortion later than the first trimester is supporting the violent dismemberment of a developing human being. If you don’t believe so, please publish the pictures of a completed late-term abortion. Look at the images of the dismemberment (this still leaves out the desperate reaction of the fetus’s futile resistance to the tools destroying him or her) then castigate the justices of the Supreme Court for their ruling. Rape, incest, and life of the mother CAN be accommodated and allowed for in a first trimester abortion.

With all but one precinct reporting on election night, Rashid led Zalewski by a mere 255 votes. Despite the narrow margin, Zalewski conceded defeat in a phone call to Rashid around 9 p.m. Rashid received 51.7 percent of

the vote to 48.3 percent for Zalewski.

A few minutes after that call, Rashid proclaimed victory in a brief speech to a roomful of jubilant supporters in his campaign’s small storefront office in Berwyn.

“It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for,” said Rashid who lost two previous runs for office in Cook County. “Our message resonated with the people of the 21st District, with the voters. ... And I look forward to being the first Palestinian and the first Muslim who’s going to Springfield.”

Unofficial results on July 5 showed Rashid with 4,181 votes to Zalewski’s 3,800, a 381-vote margin of victory.

Rashid, a Harvard graduate and resident of Justice who resides just outside the boundary of the 21st District, is the youngest of 11 children born to parents who emigrated from Palestine to the United States.

His victory is a point of pride for Palestinian Americans in the Chicago area, many of whom live in and around Bridgeview and other southwestern suburbs.

Zalewski, 43, who has been in office since 2009, issued a brief statement on his campaign’s social media sites.

“I loved this job, gave my all for the people of the district and the state, and did it the best I could,” Zalewski said. “The voters of the district made their voices heard, and that’s democracy. I look forward to some much needed time off with an incredible spouse and four amazing children. Onward.”

In some ways it was a shocking defeat for a well-regarded and popular state legislator who is the chairman of the powerful Revenue and Finance Committee of the Illinois House of Representatives. He is quite popular with his colleagues, a number of whom campaigned for him.

Zalewski had the strong support of Gov. J.B. Pritzker who came to Riverside last week to a campaign rally Zalewski’s campaign headquarters in the Arcade Building. Zalewski also had a big edge in money, raising approximately $1 million which allowed his campaign to flood the district with direct mail in the final weeks of the campaign and air television ads.

He was also supported by unions, special interest groups and had the support of local leaders, including Riverside Village President Joseph Ballerine and former President Ben Sells.

Rashid was the aggressor throughout the campaign, constantly tying Zalewski to former House Speaker Mike Madigan, who is facing trial on federal corruption charges.

Rashid wasn’t shy about pointing out that Zalewski’s father, also named Michael Zalewski and the former alderman of Chicago’s 23rd Ward, is a bit player in that investigation.

One of the charges against Madigan is that he demanded that ComEd hire the elder Zalewski, who is not charged with any wrongdoing, to a $5,000-a-month consulting contract.

A Rashid mailer referred to the “Madigan-Zalewski Corruption Family Tree” and pointed out that Zalewski’s wife, Carrie Zalewski, was appointed as chair of the Illinois Commerce Commission by Pritzker at Madigan’s request, according to the mailer.

Rashid also reminded voters that the elder Zalewski and Madigan helped put the younger Zalewski in the state legislature.

They were among the Democratic ward and township committeemen who named Zalewski as the Democratic candidate in 2008 after incumbent state Rep. Robert Mo-

laro conveniently withdrew from his race for re-election after the primary.

Rashid’s campaign raised about a third as much as Zalewski’s, although final figures won’t be available until next month.

But Rashid ran a sophisticated campaign with direct mail, television ads and an enthusiastic core of volunteers who went door to door throughout the district.

Zalewski had never faced a serious opponent in his career, and he spent most of the campaign simply defending his record and appeared uncomfortable making attacks, although his campaign did hit back at Rashid in recent weeks in mailers and television ads.

Zalewski, who helped found a caucus of moderate Democrats in the House, was hurt last year when he voted against the repeal of an Illinois law requiring minors to notify their parents before having an abortion.

Some pro-choice voters never forgave him for that vote despite Zalewski’s strenuous efforts throughout the campaign to affirm his pro-choice stance and highlight pro-choice votes.

Zalewski even went as far as handing out and wearing a pink T-shirt that said “Pro Choice” on the front and back on June 24 and renting a bus to take people to a Chicago rally protesting the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

“I think that he equivocated,” said Sue Joseph of North Riverside about Zalewski after voting for Rashid on June 28. “He isn’t really pro-choice if he isn’t willing to let minors have domain over their own body without their parent’s permission.”

Helen Gallagher, a Rashid voter from Riverside agreed, saying she supported Rashid in his 2018 race for the Cook County Board and his 2020 race for the Cook County Board of Review and liked his progressive politics.

“I’ve been following his efforts for a few years and I’ve been impressed by his stance and his willingness to step up,” Gallagher said.

Alyson Scanlon of Riverside voted for Zalewski. She was impressed by his work on the state’s financial problems.

“I definitely appreciated what Zalewski did to get Illinois out of the budget stalemate and the way that he fought to get funding relief for non-profits to provide critical services,” Scanlon said.

The 21st District stretches from Cicero to Justice and includes nine precincts in Chicago including eight in the 23rd ward where Zalewski grew up. Zalewski won nearly 69 percent of the vote in the relatively small Chicago portion of the district but Rashid carried the much larger suburban portion of the district with nearly 54 percent of the vote in the suburbs.

Zalewski will remain in the state legislature until his term ends at the end of the year.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Principals and procedures of computer systems, such as, data communication, hierarchical structure, backups, testing and critical analysis.

Hardware and software configuration of. computers, servers and mobile devices, including computing environment of Windows Server and Desktop OS and applications, Unix/Linux OS, VMware, iOS/Android.

Network protocols, security, configuration and administration, including firewalls, routers, switches and wireless technology.

Cabling and wiring, including CAT5/6, fiber network, telephone, serial communication, termination, and punch-down.

Telecommunications theory and technology, including VoiP, serial communication, wireless protocols, PBX, analog, fax, voicemail and auto-attendant.

Principles and methods of computer programming, coding and testing, including power shell, command scripting, macros, and

VB scripts.

Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

Technical writing, office productivity tools and database packages.
