D103 faces $20K in fines over asbestos reporting Sanctions apparently not related to February central office project

By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is seeking to levy $20,000 in fines

against Lyons-Brookfield Elementary School District 103 for violating recordkeeping laws relating to asbestos in school buildings. The alleged violations do not refer di-

rectly to a February incident in which District 103 Maintenance Director Ryan Grace and others allegedly performed work in the district’s administration building that may have dislodged asbestos. The IDPH’s notice

of intent to assess the fine does reference improper removal of “asbestos containing transite ceiling materials from inside the See D103 on page 11

Empanadus still open for side-door catering, deliveries, order pickup By BOB UPHUES Editor

Walk-in retail at a downtown Riverside business has been interrupted after a portion of the building’s façade gave way last week, showering the sidewalk with bricks. A passerby phoned police just after 4 a.m. on July 20 to report the damage to the storefront of Empanadus, 7 E. Burlington St. No one was injured when the façade gave way. The village placed barricades around the storefront, and the store’s walk-in retail operations have been suspended until the village can ensure that the façade is stable. The business itself remains open, however, for catering, deliveries and pickups via a side door. “At this point we’re waiting for the owner to get appropriate scaffolding up to secure the area,” said Riverside Community Development Director Sonya Abt on July 24. “Then we can open the sidewalk.” The property is owned by a real estate trust and managed by Reliable Management, a Riverside-based firm. A man who identified himself in a phone interview as Tony LaMantia, a sales agent for Reliable Management, told the Landmark that the façade would be fixed “in a few days.” He also claimed the façade of the building had been struck by lightning. Riverside Fire Chief Matthew Buckley stated there was no evidence of a lightning strike. “We checked that entire structure that morning,” said Buckley, who added that lightning strikes tend to leave scorch marks.

LOOK OUT BELOW: About three courses of bricks tumbled from above the storefront window at Empanadus overnight on July 19-20, forcing the front part of the building to be barricaded until the problem can be fixed. Until then, the business is using a side door for deliveries and pickups. “There was no sign of anything.” Empanadus owner Kevin Schamber said the bulk of his business is carryout and delivery for catering, but the issue with the façade has taken a big bite out his walk-in business. “As long as customers know they can call ahead, we’re making it work,” Schamber said. “But some customers don’t want to go through that.” Schamber estimated that once work to repair the facade begins, it could take up to a week to complete. On Monday morning, four

Aunt Diana’s set to reopen this week A little more than a month after water from a second-floor unit flooded and shut down Aunt Diana’s Old Fashioned Fudge in downtown Riverside, the business is poised to reopen this week. Store manager Patty Miglore said she was hoping for a midweek opening, but the store ought to be back in full operation by this weekend. “The repairs are all done,” she said. Riverside Community Development Director Sonya Abt said the business needs to get a health inspection and final build-

ing inspection before it can reopen. Miglore said she was working to schedule those inspections. It’s still not clear what caused the flood that sent water pouring through the ceiling of Aunt Diana’s overnight on June 21-22. The area where water came through the ceiling on the east side of the business is directly below a bathroom, Miglore said. Much of the ceiling over the east half had to be replaced and the flood destroyed many of the sweets on display in the cases and behind the main counter.

days after the bricks gave way, he wasn’t sure when things would start moving. “The question is, when will they start the work?” Schamber said. Abt on Monday afternoon said a contractor had submitted a building permit application to begin repairs, and she directed the contractor to erect scaffolding immediately. It was slated to go up on July 25, Abt said. “I told him if we don’t see progress, we’d be issuing daily citations,” Abt said. The building where Empanadus rents space has been a source of complaints from the village of Riverside in recent years. In 2015, the village sued Reliable Management to force the company to install a fire alarm system in the building, which houses both commercial and residential tenants. The suit followed a year after a local adjudicator issuing the firm a citation for failing to maintain an active fire alarm system. The firm subsequently installed a working fire alarm system, Abt said. For more than a year now, she added, the village has been trying to get Reliable Management to make improvements to the paved areas and a dumpster enclosure that are part of the property, located east of the building.

Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel will be a guest on WBBM news radio’s “At Issue” program on Sunday, July 30 to take part in a discussion of criminal justice reform policies being advanced by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx – specifically, his opposition to those policies. The radio show airs at 9:30 a.m. and again at 9:30 p.m. on 780-AM. One of the newest policies, and one that will be part of the discussion, involves the state’s attorney’s decision, beginning Aug. 1, to stop prosecuting arrests for suspended driver’s licenses that are based on financial responsibility, such as having unpaid traffic tickets. Back in June, Weitzel penned a letter to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle protesting the policy, saying the move had little to do with criminal justice reform and more to do with a lack of proper funding for the state’s attorney’s office. “To arrest people and book them into custody knowing that [the] state’s attorney’s office will not prosecute is – simply put – ridiculous and unethical,” Weitzel wrote in his June 16 letter. Weitzel also called the policy – as well as an earlier decision by the state’s attorney to decline felony prosecution for retail theft offenders unless that person has 10 prior convictions – a “get out of jail card” and “only intended … to grab headlines and reduce overall crowding in jails.” Weitzel argues the county should prioritize funding the state’s attorney’s office, so it can prosecute both criminal and traffic cases. He also has complained that the county has not sought the input of local police chiefs before changing policies related to criminal prosecution. But Eric Sussman, a former federal prosecutor who is Foxx’s top assistant, called Weitzel’s statement “hyperbole” at best and argued that the state’s attorney was putting its resources towards prosecuting serious crimes. “We have limited resources,” said Sussman, who added that the county had recently laid off 14 assistant state’s attorneys in response to budget constraints. “We have to put our resources in felony courtrooms dealing with violent crimes.” Sussman also rejected the characterization of the decision to not prosecute licenses suspended for financial reasons, a misdemeanor, as a get-out-of-jail-free card. No one

charged with having a suspended license goes to jail, Sussman said, and the cases are eventually dismissed when the financial obligation is fulfilled. “All of them get dismissed on a regular basis, and the assistant [state’s attorneys] spend an inordinate amount of time being a collection agency,” Sussman said. Weitzel complained that people who have routinely shirked paying child support, who have had their driver’s licenses suspended as a result, will be able to continue that practice as a result of the new policy. “To take this tool away from the victims – the wives, girlfriends and children of these individuals is not a good public policy,” Weitzel wrote in June. Sussman said that license suspensions are not a mechanism for forcing child support payments. “[Police] not arresting them for not paying child support,” Sussman said. “That’s between the party and the Secretary of State’s Office, and we have an entire division that goes after those cases. It’s completely separate and apart from this.” Weitzel said the policy puts police officers in the precarious position of weighing whether or not to make an arrest that won’t be prosecuted. “With all the scrutiny law enforcement has been facing recently, do we really want to have our officers decide what crimes they will make an arrest,” Weitzel wrote, “which ones will be prosecuted and charged at a local level, or a misdemeanor or felony?” Sussman said that police can continue to seek charges for those kinds of suspensions, though they won’t be pursued at the circuit court level, or municipalities can seek to pass ordinances to treat suspension as violations that can be dealt with locally in municipal adjudication. Weitzel told the Landmark that Riverside is investigating whether such an ordinance is possible, but said doing that shifts the cost of prosecution to municipalities, resulting in higher legal bills for the adjudicator and in overtime costs for police officers, who must appear at such hearings. In the meantime, driver’s license suspension for failure to pay fines remains on the books, establishing a disconnect between the law’s intent and the new policy to enforce it. But Sussman said it’s like many other laws on the books where judgment comes into play. It’s illegal to go 56 mph in a 55 mph zone, Sussman said, yet a police officer would rarely, if ever, write a ticket for such an offense. Police use discretion already, he said, in applying the law. “This is one exercise of discretion, between prosecuting violent crimes and [prosecuting suspended licenses],” Sussman said. “We have to make those choices.”

Brookfield seeks grant for ‘green’ alleys Village hits up MWRD for paving commercial alleys near 47th St.

By BOB UPHUES Editor

The village of Brookfield is seeking $135,000 in grant funding from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to help pave four commercial alleys using sustainable construction methods that would include permeable pavers. The alleys, which would be improved in 2018 if the grant funding is approved, all run east-west and are located directly north of industrial/commercial properties along 47th Street between Eberly and Raymond avenues. Like most of Brookfield’s alleys, those included as part of the grant application consist of gravel, and the heavy truck traffic, combined with rains — such as the heavy storms the area has experienced the past couple of weeks — conspire to make them prone to flood into adjacent properties. The alleys can have as much as 8 inches of standing water in depressions in the gravel, which simply doesn’t drain. “A little bit more water and you could go fishing,” said Mario Licitra, owner of Licitra Roofing Inc. at 9512 47th St. He also owns commercial property a half-block east

seeps under the garage doors into the warehouse. At the property farther east, the water flooded the backyard and the basement of a building that once stood there. Licitra’s solution at both properties was to raise the grade of the rear of each property to stop water from flooding in. “But we still get a lot of ponding in the area,” Licitra said. “We really need that alley to get in and out. Help us out here.” BOB UPHUES/Editor Brookfield is seeking funds through the MWRD’s Green WET WAYS: After heavy rains, water ponds in the comInfrastructure Program, mercial alleys north of 47th Street between Eberly and which assists in the construcRaymond avenues, like many Brookfield alleys. water onsite and reduce runoff into the storm sewer.” Paving the alleys would also eliminate the ponding so common after rains and snow melts. The village has periodically attempted to address issues related to the gravel alleys along 47th Street, but the fixes are always temporary. According to the grant application, the entire cost of construction for the four alleys would be about $323,000, with the village picking up about $188,000 of the cost. The village’s Department of Public Works would be charged with maintaining the alleys. Hancock Engineering, which serves as the village’s engineering firm, has already completed preliminary engineering for the project. The new alleys would be a combination of concrete and permeable pavers, underlain with filter fabric and a 24-inch-deep, 12-footwide drywell of compacted aggregate. The roughly 6,000 square feet of permeable area would be able to retain about 32,325 gallons of water, according to the application. It would take about 10 weeks to construct the alleys, and work would begin next spring if Brookfield receives the grant funding.

Riverside to ask county about bike route Riverside Township wary of using Swinging Bridge

By BOB UPHUES Editor

Riverside will approach Cook County about the possibility of establishing an official bike route through the village that would serve as a connector between the Salt Creek Trail and Cermak Woods Trail, but the exact route and when such a connector might become a reality remains unclear. After getting consensus, July 20, from village trustees to move forward, Riverside Village President Ben Sells said his next move would be to approach Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski (D-16th), whose support was instrumental in the funding and construction of the bike path on First Avenue from Ridgewood Road to 26th Street. “We don’t know if any of this is even going to happen,” Sells said. “The next step would be to get in contact with some of the county commissioners and Arnold Randall, [the general superintendent] of the Forest Preserve District, and sit down with them and give them our idea to see if this is something the county would be willing to consider.” If there is interest on the part of Cook County to use Riverside as a connector, officials will have to agree on a route through the village, which also is no sure thing. The most direct connecting route would extend east from First Avenue along Forest Avenue and then south of Longcommon Road. That route could continue along Riverside Road to the Swinging Bridge, into Riverside Lawn, and then into Lyons along Shakespeare Avenue, where there’s a cross-

BOB UPHUES/Editor

TIGHT SQUEEZE: Riverside Township officials are leery of designating the Swinging Bridge part of any future bike route through Riverside, connecting the Salt Creek and Cermak Woods trails. But village officials remain hopeful that the bridge might be part of the route, since it provides the most direct and scenic link. walk across Ogden Avenue, connecting with the Cermak Woods Trail. Alternately, and less directly, the route could head west along Bloomingbank Road to Barrypoint Road and cross the bridge be-

fore heading east along 39th Street to Shakespeare Avenue. At the July 11 meeting of the Riverside Township Board, Township Supervisor Vera Wilt called use of the Swinging Bridge

as part of an official route “doubtful.” Wilt said the township’s risk management insurance firm believes the bridge isn’t wide enough to allow two bicycles or a bike and pedestrian to pass one another. Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel expressed some reservations about bikes using the Shakespeare Avenue crosswalk to cross Ogden Avenue. There is no stop sign or traffic light at that location. “That Shakespeare scares me over there,” Weitzel told the village board on July 20. “The cars are clipping along at 35 or 40 on Ogden Avenue. I’d say that’s a pretty dangerous way to cross.” Weitzel said it would be safer if bicyclists crossed Ogden Avenue at Joliet Avenue, where there is a traffic signal. However, that would also mean bikes would head east for several blocks along Ogden Avenue. Rob Dixon, a member of a Frederick Law Olmsted Society committee studying the feasibility of a Riverside bike route, said the Shakespeare Avenue crosswalk was no more dangerous than other crosswalks across busy streets along the Salt Creek Trail. “Shakespeare is challenging, but no more than what you see on the Salt Creek Trail right now,” Dixon said. Dixon and Sells also hoped Riverside Township and county officials wouldn’t discount using the Swinging Bridge as part of a designated route. “There are a number of crossings of waterways to the west of us that employ mechanisms, for instance walk[ing] your bike if they’ve got a narrow bridge,” Dixon said.

Siblings to open ‘social-style’ pub in Brookfield Little Owl to open in former Sanctuary space on Grand Blvd.

By BOB UPHUES Editor

A sister and brother team with deep roots in the restaurant industry are planning to bring a “social-style” pub featuring Midwestern craft beers and old-school videogames to downtown Brookfield this fall in the recently vacated spot at 3747 Grand Blvd. On July 24, the Brookfield Village Board approved creating a liquor license for the new business, Little Owl, which will be operated by Loukia and Stathi Giafas, who come from a family of restaurateurs. Their grandfather, a bus driver, got into the business with his brothers after coming to the U.S, and their parents, both Greek immigrants, also embraced the restaurant business.

“We’re the third generation going into the business,” said Loukia, who works in marketing. “Restaurants have always been in the family.” Stathi, meanwhile, has been managing his parent’s restaurant, a breakfast diner in Bloomingdale, for the past six or seven years. He’ll handle the day-to-day operations of Little Owl, Loukia said. “We started talking about this about a year and a half ago,” Loukia said. “I know it’s a crazy industry, but we both kind of love it.” The pair knew they wanted to find a space for Little Owl near a Metra line, and had been having little luck finding a place in Chicago. Loukia bought a home in Brookfield two years ago, and said she was driving home after striking out on another location in the city when she saw an oppor-

tunity in her home town. “We were driving back from a place in the city, very discouraged, when we drove past the Sanctuary [formerly at 3747 Grand Blvd.] and there was a ‘for rent’ sign up,” Loukia said. “We were inside the next day. Fate fell into our hands.” The storefront was extensively remodeled prior to the opening of the Sanctuary not too many years ago, so work on the interior is mainly cosmetic, Loukia said. After obtaining their liquor license, she said Little Owl could be ready to open its doors within two months. Loukia said Little Owl will focus on craft beer that comes from Midwest along with bar food that she described as “new spins on American classics.” “We’d like to stay as local as possible with the craft beers,” Loukia said. “We want to

really, truly be a Midwestern bar.” They’re aiming for a place that’s familyfriendly and will become “a place where we can interact with patrons to create a social community.” One quirky feature of Little Owl will be classic 1980s and 1990s arcade games. Loukia said she dislikes the video gambling machines that have become so prevalent. “Arcade games are a good way to be family-friendly but have entertainment,” said Loukia, who added she and her brother became “videogame fanatics” while their parents owned a hot dog stand that had oldschool arcade games. “It just stuck with us,” she said. “You don’t see it too often.” Loukia said that the bar may feature live music a couple of times a month. It’s liquor license also allows carry-out alcohol sales.

Berwyn couple reportedly robbed at mall Gunmen boxed in car in lot, demanded cash and jewelry By BOB UPHUES Editor

Heavy rains continued to keep river levels elevated last week. A strong storm on July 21 drove the Des Plaines River up to a crest of 7.9 feet over the weekend, flooding park and forested areas in Riverside. Flood waters also made it to the northernmost residences in Riverside Lawn (above), inundating some properties and blocking some streets. For more photos, visit www.RBLandmark.com.

A Berwyn couple called police on the evening of July 11 to report that they’d been robbed at gunpoint by three men in the parking lot of the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road. The victims, a 37-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, told police they’d arrived at the mall about 7 p.m. and parked in the east lot near the movie theater marquee sign. They entered the mall through the food court and visited several stores before leaving the mall and returning to their vehicle around 7:45 p.m. As soon as they entered the vehicle, according to the police report, a black Hyundai Sonata pulled directly behind their vehicle, blocking them in. with handguns, and all wearing black clothing and black half-face masks exited the Hyundai and yelled, “Give me your jewelry and cash!” The male victim reportedly gave the men a “Cuban link” gold chain valued at $3,000 and a gold Citizen watch valued at $250 to the men before also handing over his wallet. The three offenders then got back into the Hyundai and drove off northbound through the parking lot. The victims reportedly followed the Hyundai eastbound on Cermak Road, losing sight of it after it entered the Cermak Plaza parking lot. Police from North Riverside, Berwyn, Riverside and Forest Park reportedly checked the area for a vehicle matching the one described by the victims, but none was located.

We’re down to only five members, and five members just cannot carry on the club. We just can’t seem to get more people involved. Everybody’s just too busy.” The problem attracting members is not limited to Brookfield. At one time approximately 3 million women belonged to Woman’s Clubs in the United States. Now there are a little less than 80,000 members in 3,000 officially designated Woman’s Clubs located in the U.S. and 11 other countries, said Michelle Furman, the director of communications and public relations for the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. Time to Prep for Fall Seeding Season Is your lawn struggling? In need of rejuvenation? Looking for a more cost-effective option? If your answer is “yes” to any of these scenarios, keep in mind that the perfect time to begin your seeding project is between August 15th and Labor Day weekend. Note: a 21-day growth period from germination to full growth is normal, after which you can Scott mow for the first time. McAdam Jr. Fall is the preferred time because of fewer pressures on the seed and an optimal growing climate. As soil temperatures decrease, dormant weed seeds in the soil are not able to germinate. That minimizes competition for space, nutrients, and moisture for the seed to establish properly and establish healthy root systems. With cooler temperatures, the soil also retains moisture longer, decreasing your time and water demands. Don’t overwater—which can result in drowning or washing the seed away. Short, frequent watering keeps the top layers of soil moist. Common practice is to keep the top 4-6” of soil moist at all times without being oversaturated. Ten to 15 minutes of irrigation per area will typically provide enough moisture to grow your new lawn. Note: in times of late season heat, irrigating twice per day might be necessary for optimal growth. Your success depends on your commitment to carefully monitoring and caring for your lawn. Let us know how we can help!

It’s Your Money By Linda Sokol Francis. E.A.

FILE AND PAY YOUR TAXES ON TIME

I

f you can’t finish your return on time, make sure you file Form 4868 by April 17, 2017. Form 4868 gives you a sixmonth extension of the filing deadline until October 16, 2017. On the form, you need to make a reasonable estimate of your tax liability for 2016 and pay any balance due with your request. Requesting an extension in a timely manner is especially important if you end up owing tax to the IRS. If you

file and pay late, the IRS can slap you with a late-filing penalty of 4.5 percent per month of the tax owed and a latepayment penalty of 0.5 percent a month of the tax due. The maximum late filing penalty is 22.5 percent and the late-payment penalty tops out at 25 percent. By filing Form 4868, you stop the clock running on the costly late-filing penalty.

Man uses rock to break into restaurant

North Riverside police are reporting that nothing appeared to have been taken during an early morning break-in at Olive Garden, 7513 Cermak Road, on July 16, though someone rifled through cabinets and drawers in the manager’s office and may have attempted to open the safe. The restaurant’s general manager called police about 8:15 a.m. after arriving at work and finding that a glass door had been shattered by a landscaping stone, which police found located a few feet inside the restaurant. Surveillance video showed that a man picked up the stone about 2:35 a.m. and by 2:40 a.m. he was picked up by a camera inside the restaurant, using a cellphone light as he opened cabinets, drawers and touched the safe’s keypad and handle. The man is also on camera entering the employee break room. The manager told police the man did not appear to be a present or former employee and that nothing appeared missing from the manager’s office or the safe.

Third BB gun shooting reported For the third time this month, someone has reported being shot in Brookfield by someone firing a BB gun from a dark-colored vehicle. The latest incident occurred July 17 about 9:05 p.m. near the front of Lincoln School, near the intersection of Shields and Forest avenues. According to police, four friends, ages 13 and 14, were riding their bikes when a darkcolored sedan slowed down for the stop sign. The kids heard “popping’ noises coming from the car and a 14-year-old boy told police he felt two “pinches” on his legs. The boy then realized he’d been shot once in each leg. The shots didn’t puncture his skin, but they did leave marks. The boy refused medical attention. Brookfield police on July 10 reported two similar incidents, both involving a dark-colored sedan with two people inside. One of the incidents took place at 10:10 p.m. in the 3500 block of Grand Boulevard and the other occurred that same night about 10:30 p.m. in the 9100 block of Broadway Avenue. All three incidents, police noted, happened on Mondays during the evening hours.

Road rage A 48-year-old Riverside man contacted police on July 19 to report that he’d been punched in the head by a man during an apparent road rage incident. The victim told police he was taking his yard waste container to the curb on Barrypoint Road about 9 p.m. when a northbound vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed approached.

After the victim dropped the yard waste container in the street to get out of the way, the dark-colored SUV stopped and a very agitated driver exited, reportedly telling the victim, “Don’t ever do that again.” The driver then reportedly tried to punch the victim in the face, but the victim turned away and the blow landed on the back of his head. The driver then got back in his vehicle and continued north on Barrypoint Road.

Fake plumbers scam in Brookfield An 82-year-old Brookfield resident called police on July 17 to report that she likely had been the victim of a scam by two men posing as plumbers. The men told her they’d struck a water line while doing construction in the area and asked to come into her home to make sure there were no problems with her water service. The woman let the men in and they instructed her to turn on the water in her bathroom and stay there to make sure the water didn’t change colors. One of the men stood in the doorway of the bathroom, while the other said he was going to look at the pipes under the kitchen sink. A short time later the men said they needed to get something from their truck and left the house. They never returned. On July 18, the woman called police again to report that all of her jewelry was missing.

Bike thefts ■ A Brookfield woman called police on July 17 to report that her daughter’s purple mountain bike, which had been placed against a home near a rear fence gate in the 3400 block of Oak Avenue, was taken between 3 and 6 p.m. ■ A resident of the 2200 block of Desplaines Avenue called to report that a Huffy Norwood 700C cruiser bicycle, which had been locked up behind her building, was taken sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on July 18. ■ A 21-year-old Berwyn woman reported that her red Schwinn mountain bike was stolen from the Sears north parking lot between 1:15 and 3:30 p.m. on July 21. The bike had been secured to a pole by a cord lock, according to the police report.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, July 1624, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

THE LANDMARK VIEW

T

Still spinning in D103

he school year is drawing ever closer and things in Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 seem as chaotic as ever. With a new board majority in control, several administrators hired in the wake of the 2015 election have fled rather than face what would appear to be inevitable termination at the end of the 2017-18 school year. On Monday, two more director-level employees cut the cord. Curriculum Director Natacia Campbell is skipping out to become human resources director at another school district – a decision that screams “get me out of here” from someone whose entire career has been spent as a teacher and curriculum director. And the district is now without a technology staff, with the departures of both Technology Director John Williamsen and the district’s network administrator, whose resignation was also accepted by the school board on Monday. The school district’s superintendent cited a lack of support from the new school board majority as a reason for the sudden departures, but the new board can hardly be blamed for raised eyebrows regarding administrative hires in the past two years. The district is still saddled with an assistant superintendent, whose presence the new board apparently is attempting to keep down to a minimum. And while the departing administrators might have expressed surprise at the tenor of political discourse in District 103, we can’t say we’re entirely sympathetic. The tenor of the political discourse was established in 2015 by the folks who hired them. The outrage and eventual reversal at the ballot box that followed what amounted to a hostile takeover of District 103 was in reaction to that. And while Campbell may have been well received as her year-long tenure progressed, the same cannot be said for several other administrators hired in the past two years. In the meantime, the district now faces $20,000 in fines from the Illinois Department of Public Health due to lax or non-existent record keeping and best practices regarding the presence and removal of asbestos from school district buildings. And the person that the district ought to be relying on to address building maintenance is one of the administrators in whom a majority of the school board doesn’t have a ton of confidence. In fact, it was work the maintenance director allegedly green-lighted in February that led to the state’s Department of Public Health to begin poking around in the first place. The administrative structure of District 103 remains broken, and over the next year it will be critical for the school board to seek elementary school pros to fill these key positions and allow the board to refocus on delivering quality education to students. There’s another election just around the corner in 2019. District 103 can’t afford another reversal at the polls, so this school board needs to succeed in picking people who want to serve as change agents to reinvent District 103 as a 21st century school district. That, of course, should be everyone’s goal. But, as we know too well, that isn’t everyone’s goal.

Landmark readers, we need your help Sometimes a Landmark is misdelivered and doesn’t arrive at a subscriber’s mailbox. While I can always remail a copy, sometimes I can just deliver a replacement on my way home or on my travels. Along my trips I’ve been enjoying nature’s showcase of chicory growing along the edges of cemeteries, along Cermak Road and First Avenue, at Ogden and Miller Road, making a home among corners, cracked sidewalks and along the edge of the road. This blue beauty, roots its glory where other plants would feel mistreated, taking the opportunity with its contrasting partner, the delicate, Queen Anne’s lace, with its simple white dots on the branched taproot. Perhaps I have fallen in love with the chicory because of its beauty, its perseverance, its tenacity and its reach. I see it as I listen to the national news, driving with

our local newspaper at my side. It is hard not to reflect on the profoundness of the freedom of speech and the pulse of democracy in this great nation. The First Amendment, freedom of speech, has profound significance in our country, and like the chicory weed, takes root, growing from every corner across the United States, from sea to shining sea. As Riverside, Brookfield and North Riverside take on courageous conversations at a local level, I hope that you will take a moment to engage in the community survey offered through the Landmark, your local newspaper at www.rblandmark.com/survey. Your voice and trust is valued and we want to hear from you.

Mater Christi Holy Name ‘knows the score’

Despite the often poor and troubled leadership of the Catholic Church, which controls billions and billions in property, investments, clothes and artifacts while thousands of children die of starvation around the world, the Holy Name societies are out there doing their jobs. On June 23, Mater Christi Parish in North Riverside, which has probably the biggest and one of the most active Holy Name societies, hosted the 37th annual spiritual assembly with a beautiful outdoor Mass in front of the shine of the Mother of Mothers. There was an overflow crowd, the weather was fine and an aura of goodness, sharing and love seemed to enhance the outdoor Mass.

Welcoming doctor to North Riverside Welcome to North Riverside Dr. Lyndon Taylor. I’m sure your name will be known since you delivered thousands of babies throughout North Riverside and neighboring towns, and still are. You have helped so many women with their health problems, including me. You saved my life when you found ovarian cancer and cured me. Because of you, I am here today. This is my way of saying thank you. It’s my hope that others get checked and make that appointment and enjoy peace of mind. You’re the best. Call 708-442-7780. The office is at 8704 Cermak Road.

Audrey Cibulka Glen Ellyn

This is the unusual aura of the Mater Christi Holy Name. The members as well as the parish work untiringly to help any and all who are in need. Yet, the beauty of Mater Christi is that this is the norm, and you can feel it whenever you deal with all church members. I’m proud to belong to the Holy Name, but I am most satisfied for knowing a group of people always willing to help and are always satisfied knowing that they helped in a needed area. Time for the hierarchy to wake up and start following the Holy Name members who know the real score.

B

rian Waterman, principal a Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, was named a Reaching Out and Building Bridges Award winner from the Illinois Principal Association for establishing the school’s partnership with a local business to provide real-world work experience to students with various disabilities. The award was created to recognize outstanding efforts BRIAN WATERMAN in creating partnerships between school, principals, associations and organizations for the betterment of all. The school created Transition Perks in 2012 as an in-school coffee shop to provide work experience for students with disabili-

ties participating in the life-skills program. As the program grew, Western Springs businessman Nicholas Cozzi offered the use of his store, Tropical Sno, to expand services in 2014. Tropical Sno provides the storefront for Transition Perks to operate during the school year and support for training students in customer service, taking orders, tracking inventory and handling money. All profits NICHOLAS COZZI are invested in scholarships for students in the program to support future educational and career endeavors. Both Waterman and Cozzi will be recognized at a special ceremony in October in Springfield.

Davenport talks a good game Radio show host loves discussing sports with local players & coaches BY MARTY FARMER

I

Sports Editor

first met Doris Davenport when I appeared on her Oak Park-based radio show (at the top of the Oak Park Arms) about two years ago. I joined Wednesday Journal colleagues Dan Haley, Ken Trainor and Michael Romain to form a sort of quixotic Journalism League of America, defending the virtues and necessity of community journalism despite the gloomy state of the industry. The real superhero, I quickly discovered that fateful Sunday night, was Davenport. Like this summer’s hit movie, Wonder Woman, Davenport’s show has been well received in Oak Park and beyond, despite initially modest expectations. Her show’s appeal derives from extended discussions about a variety of topics in Oak Park, such as local government, politics, news, culture and entertainment with an eclectic but relevant group of guests. The Doris Davenport Show airs every Sunday between 6 and 8 p.m. on WPNA 1490 AM. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/thedorisdavenportshow.com and listen live online at www.radiowpna.com Although many adjectives describe Davenport — like intelligent, charismatic, lovely, determined and caring — the best one in my observation is passionate. Her heartfelt belief about whatever topic is discussed and how she expresses her opinion on that matter is an inspiration. It elevates her show and the guests who appear on it. To use a sports analogy, Davenport has that rare ability to make others better — a la LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and, it’s looking more and more, like Lonzo Ball. A few weeks after my inaugural appearance on her show, I contacted Davenport and pitched the idea of sharing a monthly segment to talk about local sports and profile a high school team. She loved the idea. Within a month, we had our first guests — Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Famer Dave Power and the Fenwick girls basketball team. During the interview, one of the Friars, all of about 17 years old, quipped, “Gosh, I’ve known Coach Power like all my life. I knew him before I knew basketball.” Since that initial visit from the Lady Friars, the following teams have visited the studio: from OPRF, the wrestling, boys basketball, and softball (state champs) teams, and from Fenwick the football, boys basketball, and boys and girls tennis teams. As a co-host for the sports segments, I’ve enjoyed watching Davenport create a comfortable atmosphere for our guests via her warm personality and thoughtful questions. In my opinion, the best show we’ve had was when head coach Rick Malnati and the Class 3A state runner-up Fenwick boys basketball team came on the radio last spring.

When the Friars appeared on the The Doris Davenport Show, Malnati and eight players represented the team. About midway through the hour interview, a radio host’s dream came true. Fueled by several thought-provoking questions from Davenport to the players, the Friars took Q&A flight. For the remainder of the interview, the players essentially moved the microphones around the table as beautifully as they pass a basketball.

Oak Park resident Doris Davenport hosts a weekly radio show on Sunday nights between 6-8 p.m. on WPNA radio 1490 AM. A regular staple of the show is Davenport talking local sports with Wednesday Journal sports editor Marty Farmer.

Studio atmosphere Good times are common during The Doris Davenport Show. Lehman and Tyler were gracious enough to bring their Olympic Gold Medals to what amounted to the coolest “show and tell” I’ve ever seen, even though the listeners couldn’t see them. And like any good party, delicious food has often played a role. After a lively segment with the OPRF boys basketball team, including head coach Matt Maloney and players Jared Scott, Cameron Gross, Connor Fuller, Sam Francis and Patrick Skrine, everybody feasted on catered food from Skrine Chops in Forest Park. When we had the Fenwick football team in studio, several Fenwick mothers, led by Marie Lillig and Anne Keller, surprised the players with a post-show meal of Jimmy John’s sandwiches, snacks, fruit and candy. Not surprisingly, that’s the kind of environment Davenport strives to create for her show, and her guests truly enjoy taking part. In addition to our radio partnership, I’ve had the good fortune to co-host with Davenport our annual Wednesday Journal “Night of Champions” sports awards gala held each summer. This year, we hosted the party at the lovely Lund Auditorium on the campus of Dominican University. We honored approximately 20 teams, athletes and coaches from not only OPRF and Fenwick but Riverside-Brookfield and Lyons Township with an audience nearing 500 guests. The evening included raffle prizes, sponsor booths, live entertainment and guest speaker/former Major League Baseball player Mike Huff.

Winners for the Landmark included: LTHS boys swimming (Male Team of the Year); Spencer Walker, LTHS boys swimming (Male Athlete of the Year); Kyle Fitzgerald, RBHS baseball (Male Athlete of the Year); LTHS girls tennis (Female Team of the Year); Lahari Yelamanchili, Female Athlete of the Year; Joey Swallow, RBHS football/wrestling (Most Inspirational Athlete of the Year) and Tom McCloskey (RBHS boys basketball, Hall of Fame). Davenport and I split the announcements of award winners; however, she stole the show when she challenged OPRF softball supporter Bill Leark to a dance-off on stage. With Ciara’s “1-2 Step” blaring throughout the 1,200-seat venue, Davenport and Leark brought the guests to their feet with an array of sweet dance moves. With the high school sports season revving up again in about three or four weeks, I’ve been intently focused on planning coverage for the Wednesday Journal and Riverside-Brookfield Landmark sports sections. However, I am also looking forward to talking sports this fall with many more compelling guests on The Doris Davenport Show. Davenport and I will have our questions at the ready. Hopefully, we can expand our coverage on the radio show this sports season to some RBHS and LTHS sports. It at least merits a discussion to include the teams we cover for the Landmark. I think my favorite question she asked the Fenwick basketball players last year was simply why do so many players miss free throws? She prefaced the question by mentioning how it’s a nonissue with a lot players. She noted when Michael Jordan went to the free throw line, two points was basically a given. The players offered fatigue, nervousness and bad form as reasons. While Davenport acknowledged those factors, I don’t think she completely accepted them. Michael Jordan never has, why shouldn’t we “be like Mike”? Like Jordan, Davenport is passionate about her craft and strives for excellence.
