Brookfield has confirmed that the parish is interested in purchasing the St. Barbara Church campus, including the church building, parish hall, school and convent.

The Coonley Playhouse, the Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned local landmark at 350 Fairbank Road in Riverside, started its life in 1912 as a kindergarten but was converted in 1919 by architect and one-time Wright apprentice William Drummond into a singlefamily home.

The Smiths restored the home’s impressive Wright-designed public spaces – the large former school room that serves as the living room and library – commissioning museum-quality replacements for the whimsical art-glass windows that made the Coonley Playhouse famous.

While anyone walking through the home’s front entrance is wowed by those spaces, the private living spaces of the home made clear why it took three years and a price drop of more than $200,000 for the home to sell.

The Coonley Playhouse was a huge project, one now being enthusiastically undertaken by its new owners, Jeremy and Kirsten Black, who bought the home last October.

The original Wright-designed public spaces essentially were restored by the Smiths, so the Blacks are concentrating their efforts on making Drummond’s later addition to the rear of the property, which made the building into a home, their principal focus.

“We feel like since it was a Drummond addition it gives us the opportunity to make this work for the family without messing with the original Frank Lloyd Wright section,” said Jeremy Black during an interview with the Landmark at the home last week.

The couple, who have three children, had lived in the Hollywood section of Brookfield since 2009. Black, who is president of the Riverside Arts Center board of directors, said the family was looking to move to a more spacious home. While the Coonley Playhouse might not have immediately ticked that box, it also was an attractive possibility.

As the asking price for the home kept dropping, it became more and more attractive, even if it was going to be a monthslong project.

“This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that kind of arose as a chance, because we wanted more space and we were going to move anyway,” Black said. “That price drop came into our scenario of what we thought we could do with the house.”

Even then, others thought maybe taking this plunge wasn’t such a hot idea.

“We had multiple people tell us not to do it,” Black said.

“And we would slowly talk to them and win them over. ‘This is why we’re doing it. This is why it makes sense.’”

Bolstering their confidence in pulling it off was the fact that Kirsten Black’s father, Phil Wieneke, owned a construction company for many years and is serving as the unofficial general contractor for their remodel.

Wieneke’s experience also included work on a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in the south suburbs, said Jeremy Black. In addition, the Blacks have hired Riverside architect Sander Kaplan – who is also a neighbor and owner of a William Drummond home – to design the renovation.

“To have someone who lives in a Drummond home to come in and know the landscape, know Frank Lloyd Wright and just be able to help out with the plans was [key],” Black said.

It was Kaplan, for example, who suggested installing under-floor heating – a feature common in Frank Lloyd Wright’s later Usonian home designs – in the remodeled Drummond wing to the rear.

Natural gas pipes that had been wrapped around the building’s exterior are being brought inside, and the Blacks are restoring the original footprint of the Wrightdesigned kitchen, removing a section of wall added later to open it up to the main living space as originally designed.

Now a two-bedroom home, the renovation will make it a four-bedroom, three bath residence.

“There’s a weird balance you strike between making a house livable and [making it so people will want to buy it in the future. We plan on staying for a good chunk of PROVIDED

time, but we do have that forethought to think somewhere down the road. … What do we change so the next buyer will say, ‘We can do this.’”

Kaplan, director of architecture for Bloom Companies LLC, also worked on the house for the Smiths, an experience he called a “learning process that helped me later in how to approach these historic projects.”

The original drawings for the Coonley Playhouse are not as detailed as contemporary plans, Kaplan said, so it’s necessary to understand the design intent.

“It can be difficult to make contemporary living work in a home designed over 100 years ago,” Kaplan said. “It requires an owner who appreciates the original design in concept, proportion and detail, and wants to create a modern living space that respects them. Both the current and previous owners were and are dedicated to do this. [Frank Lloyd Wright] although a master of built space both inside and out, was not the greatest at kitchen and baths which is what most modern families require these days.”

The Coonley Playhouse will also soon be known as just the second Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure to be outfitted with solar panels, something made possible by the building’s flat roof and boldly cantilevered eaves that project from the Fairbank Road façade.

The Riverside Preservation Commission on Aug. 12 voted to approve a certificate of appropriateness for the solar panel installation after having the Blacks make a plywood mockup and placing them on the roof to ensure they couldn’t be seen from the public right of way.

“The decision to do that was to upgrade the home to have more contemporary utilities,” said Black, who added he believes utility costs are headed upward, so it’s a way to save some money in the future. “With all the rebates Illinois gives it seemed like a no-brainer.”

Two sets of panels will go up on the roof, one above the main playroom space and another over a later garage addition to the east.

“The question really was, would we be allowed to do it,” Black said. “Most Frank Lloyd Wright homes don’t have flat roofs, so it really gave us the opportunity to do something that wasn’t visible, that could upgrade the home and make it more efficient without destroying the view.”

North Riverside’s “skyscraper” at 7222 Cermak Road has changed hands for the first time in more than two decades.

On June 21, a company called 7222 Cermak Holdings LLC, whose manager is listed by the Illinois Secretary of State as Eugene Staples, bought the seven-story granite-clad office building for $6.75 million.

The seller was a corporation called 7222 Cermak LLC, which purchased the property back in February 1998 for $8.5 million. The building was an investment property for that firm, whose manager was Richard M. Ross Jr. Built in 1971-72, about half of the massive building’s office space was initially occupied

by Clyde Federal Savings and Loan Association, which moved its headquarters there from Cicero.

In addition to the bank’s teller windows on the ground floor, Clyde Savings boasted of an underground, four-lane drive-thru, a parking lot that could accommodate more than 350 cars and a “community room” accommodating 200 people that could be rented out for meetings.

In the late 1980s, however, Clyde Savings was on the rocks and losing millions of dollars due to risky lending practices. Federal regulators placed the savings and loan into receivership in 1990.

Mid-City National Bank of Chicago acquired both the savings and loan and the property in 1991. Mid-City sold the building to 7222

7222 Cermak Road, North Riverside Cermak LLC in 1998 and lasted as a business for three more years until it was acquired by MB Financial.

Fifth-Third Bank later acquired MB Financial and in 2019 closed its North Riverside branch at 7222 Cermak Road, leaving the building without a banking tenant for the first time since it was constructed for that very purpose.

Today, the building houses a number of professional and other office uses. Rush Medical has offices in the building for both the Rush Oak Park Physicians Group and Rush University Children’s Hospital.

citizens, also has its offices there, as does the Social Security Administration, attorneys and other medical providers.

However, as is the case elsewhere, there is plenty of vacant office space inside the building, according to a listing maintained on the real estate website Loopnet. Some 29,000 square feet of retail and office space, out of a total of 97,500, is vacant.

Riverside trustees approve multifamily rental registry Beginning in 2022, buildings must register tenant info, submit to regular inspections

The owners of any multifamily rental property of three or more units in Riverside will be required to register those properties, and provide tenant contact information, with the village on an annual basis beginning in 2022.

Riverside trustees on Aug. 19 voted 5-0 to

create the rental registry, capping a fivemonth process initiated by former Village President Ben Sells in the wake of the tenants of a large downtown apartment building being left without reliable heat for more than a week during the coldest days of last winter when the building’s central heating plant failed.

In its earlier drafts, the ordinance covered all rental properties, including singlefamily homes and two-flats, and had inspection requirements that many landlords and some trustees considered onerous.

Through the months, village officials gathered input from landlords and tweaked the ordinance to arrive at a place that both sides were OK with. At the Aug. 19 meeting, there were no local landlords in attendance

and, apart from some technical changes to the language, the ordinance passed without comment.

“Everyone had an opportunity to speak,” said Village President Joseph Ballerine following the meeting. “I think our landlords have rights we need to respect, and the goal of this ordinance was to respect them while giving protection to renters.”

The registry also creates a rolling building/unit inspection requirement. Every rental unit in the village must undergo inspection once during a three-year period with no less than 20 percent of any building being inspected annually.

No one hurt by shots fired near Lincoln School Boy cited for graffiti spree

No one appears to have been wounded by shots fired from one vehicle at another on the afternoon of Aug. 21 near the intersection of Custer and Congress Park avenues on the Lyons/Brookfield border.

Lyons police are handling the investigation and have not shared any additional information with Brookfield police, who responded to the scene and determined the incident occurred within the village of Lyons.

Officers responded to the scene at about 2:44 p.m. for a report of shots fired involving a black Chevy Tahoe and a silver minivan.

The minivan was last seen heading westbound on Congress Park Avenue, while the Tahoe was last seen southbound on Custer Avenue.

Police reported recovering four shell casings on the pavement in the 4300 block of Custer Avenue.

Witnesses told police that the two vehicles were driving at high speeds westbound on 43rd Street. As the vehicles turned southbound on Custer Avenue, witnesses reported hearing several gunshots.

Police walked the area to see if any rounds struck buildings, including Lincoln School, one side of which runs along the 4300 block of Custer Avenue, but could find no evidence that buildings were hit.

told police it appeared to be a real weapon, because there was no orange plastic on the tip of the barrel.

The responding officer reported finding the boys in possession of an Air Soft gun, which the officer confiscated. Later the boy’s father told the officer he didn’t wish to retrieve the gun and told the officer “get rid of it.”

Brookfield police issued a 17-year-old boy multiple local ordinance citations for criminal damage to property after a spate of graffiti incidents in the village in the past couple of months.

Someone called police late on Aug. 15 to report seeing fresh spray-painted graffiti at Ehlert Park and three people in the area. The witness attempted to stop the trio, but one fled on a bicycle while another ran off when the witness said they were calling police.

Police later were able to identify all three suspects and interviewed them, with one taking responsibility for all of the graffiti from Aug. 15. He was ticketed for those offenses while the other two were cited for other offenses.

A couple of days later, police talked again with the alleged graffiti offender about other incidents in prior weeks. He also reportedly confessed to those, including one at Sweetener Supply, 9501 Southview Ave. Police issued seven additional citations for criminal damage to property at that time.

A Cicero woman was ticketed by North Riverside police after she allegedly crashed her 2008 Honda Accord into a Chicago police K-9 unit squad car at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Cermak Road on Aug. 17 at about 6:10 p.m.

According to the crash report the Honda was eastbound on Cermak Road approaching Harlem Avenue. Although the Honda had a green light, the Chicago squad car, a fully marked 2012 Chevy Tahoe with its emergency light flashing and siren sounding was southbound on Harlem Avenue and had the right of way.

The two vehicles collided in the middle of the intersection, with the impact sending the police vehicle into the front end of a 2016 Chevy, which was facing northbound on Harlem Avenue waiting at the red light.

Paramedics transported the driver of the Honda and the Chicago police officer to Loyola University medical center for treatment of unspecified injuries. Police cited the Honda driver for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Bicyclist injured in crash into car A 21-year-old man sustained injuries to his face and had several teeth knocked out after he accidentally crashed his bicycle into the rear of a vehicle parked in the 100 block of East Quincy Street on Aug. 16 at about 9:10 p.m.

Police responded to the scene after someone called police to report that they’d heard a loud noise of breaking glass and went out front to find the rear windshield of the vehicle broken out. After being unable to find any object that might have broken the vehicle and observing nothing missing from it, police noticed blood on the ground.

The officer followed the trail of blood to a home where they located a man who told them he didn’t see the parked car in the dark and crashed into it, breaking the rear windshield with his face.

Despite the injuries, the man refused transport to the hospital and signed a refusal for treatment.

Two named as new student advisors to D208 board Two girls, both seniors, assume roles as non-voting members

The new student advisors to the RiversideBrookfield High School District 208 school board this year are seniors Claire Harrison and Elena Pinedo. The two replace last year’s student advisors Lily Adlesick and Michael Ciszewski who both graduated last in May. Adlesick and Ciszewski were the first ever student advisors to the RBHS school board.

They were selected after former board member Tom Jacobs pushed for adding non-voting student advisors to the school board.

The school board felt that that having student advisors was valuable and decided to continue the positions.

Harrison and Pinedo were selected this year from a field of six applicants. They have different backgrounds and experiences. Harrison has been a very involved and vocal student.

She became especially interested watching some of the drama unfold on the school board last year. Twice last year she made statements during the public comment portion of school board meetings, defending teachers who backed remote learning at a time when some school board members were advocating for a quick shift back to inperson school.

December meeting criticizing the way a few school board members spoke to band director James Baum at an earlier school board meeting.

She also has been involved in many different extracurricular activities at RBHS. As a freshman and sophomore she served as president of her class. This year she is a drum major for the marching band, an editor for the student newspaper and a leader of the RBHS Model UN Club.

Harrison has served as the stage manager

for a number of the high school’s theatrical productions and also manages to find the time to work two part-time jobs.

Pinedo transferred to RBHS from Fenwick High School after her sophomore year when her family moved to Riverside from Berwyn. She is a varsity softball player and a member of the Organization for Latin American Students. Pinedo said that she applied for the student advisor position after being encouraged to do so by Principal Hector Freytas.

She said she thinks it is significant to have a Latino student advisor, since students who are members of minority groups might to be more attuned to the concerns of minority students. The most recent Illinois School Report Card indicates that 36.7 percent of RBHS students are Hispanic.

School board President Deanna Zalas and Jacobs, who left the school board in July, interviewed all the applicants for the student advisor position. Zalas said she liked that Harrison and Pinedo bring a different set of experiences to the board with Harrison having extensive experience in the performing arts and Pinedo being a varsity athlete.

Jacobs, who resigned because he moved out of the district, liked having two student advisors and once said that he thought it would be a good idea to have one boy and one girl. This year the school board decided two girls were the best fit for the position.

Harrison said she feels it is her job to represent all students and not just share her own opinions. During the first school board meeting the new student advisors attended on Aug. 10, Harrison demonstrated that she will not hesitate to ask questions.

She twice asked unprompted questions, one about how RBHS’ student vaccination rates compared to other schools in the area and one about how funds set aside for executive-functioning instruction are used.

Planners launch survey on BNSF grade crossings CMAP seeks input as part of federal grade crossing feasibility study

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning is asking residents, commuters, business owners and those who work in Riverside and Berwyn to participate in an online survey they’ve just launched to gather input and data as they assess ways to make Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad grade crossings safer and easier to traverse.

The survey can be found at engage.cmap. illinois.gov/berwyn-riverside-crossings and, according to CMAP Senior Planner Tom Murtha, about 200 people had taken the survey in the first couple of days after it was released to the public.

It’s part of a federal process CMAP is engaged in to determine whether there’s a purpose and need for any grade separation solutions along the BNSF line in Riverside and Berwyn and, if so, what the alternatives might be to make grade separation a reality.

“There’s a balance between the purpose and need and what’s achievable through engineering,” Murtha said. “There will be a wide range of alternatives and analysis to see if any are acceptable to the communities and do what the project is calling for.”

The survey includes more than a dozen questions that seek to gather information on who is using the grade crossings and how often, which grade crossings should be the focus of any study, how delays inconvenience motorists and pedestrians

and what circumstances planners ought to consider in coming up with solutions.

“We’re going to reach out to stakeholders, but we also want a broad base of feedback from residents, commuters and business owners about their experiences at those crossings so our data can be put into perspective,” Murtha said.

At this point, CMAP has not set a deadline for the survey, but Murtha said he expected it to wrap up in early October.

About two years ago, Murtha appeared at a Riverside Village Board meeting to gauge village support for a grade separation feasibility study CMAP was planning to conduct.

At the time, trustees appeared skeptical that a solution that didn’t adversely affect Harlem Avenue businesses and Riverside’s his-

toric character could be found.

Murtha said CMAP took those concerns to heart and said he wasn’t sure that any solution could be found that would be acceptable along Harlem Avenue. The agency’s study, however, is broader than Harlem Avenue and will seek data and feedback on other problem spots along the line, such as at Oak Park Avenue, where trains blocking that intersection can delay ambulances trying to get to MacNeal Hospital.

“I don’t know whether we’ll get to the point of alternatives, but we’re trying to set this up to be creative to address concerns about historic preservation and businesses,” Murtha said. “Getting that feedback will help us understand those concerns a bit better.”

Delta variant drives rise in new COVID-19 cases Riverside and North Riverside see highest weekly totals in three months

The Cook County Department of Public Health on Aug. 23 reported that in Riverside and North Riverside, the number people testing positive for COVID-19 during the past week was higher than any week in three months.

Riverside reported 12 new cases in the week ending Aug. 23, the most since the end of May, while North Riverside reported 11 new cases, the largest oneweek total since May 11.

The increase in cases mirrors what officials are seeing nationwide, with the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 accounting for the majority of new cases. The county health department reported Monday that the delta variant accounted for 99.1 percent of new cases in the prior 14 days, a nearly 20-percent increase in that rate.

The county tracks variant spread through genomic sequencing, according to its online COVID-19 surveillance dashboard, and only a small number of COVID-19 positive specimens are sequenced.

Since the pandemic began, the alpha variant still accounted for 61.7 percent of all COVID-19 specimens sequenced, the county reported Monday, but the delta variant cases are quickly catching up.

In the prior 14 days, according to the county, the alpha variant accounted for zero new cases, while the delta variant accounted for 107 of 108 specimens sequenced in suburban Cook County.

The number of new cases in Brookfield in the past week was slightly lower as of Aug. 23, with 22 reported by the county. Within the

past three weeks, however, Brookfield has seen 80 new cases. That’s nearly as many cases as Brookfield had recorded during the prior 13 weeks.

As elementary schools reopen their doors this week to full classrooms, local positivity

rates are a mixed bag. In Brookfield, the seven-day rolling positivity rate as of Aug. 23 had dipped to 4.45 percent compared to the 14-day rolling rate of 5.11 percent.

In the 60546 ZIP code, which includes both Riverside and North Riverside, the seven-day

rolling positivity rate was 6.68 as of Aug. 23, up from the 14-day rolling rate of 4.81.

As of Aug. 23, the Cook County Medical Examiner reported no new fatalities from COVID-19 in any of the villages covered by the Landmark.

New restaurant, coffee shop/bakery eye downtown Riverside Set to occupy former Mollie’s, Flur storefronts

Two new food/drink-centric businesses are on their way to downtown Riverside, filling vacancies created by the closure of two similar businesses in recent years.

The Sandtrap Grill & Tap, a golf-themed eatery, is slated to open its doors at 31 Forest Ave. It most recently was home to Mollie’s Public House, which closed its doors in March after an 11-year run.

Manthan Desai, whose business partner

in the venture is Riverside resident Chris Connelly, told the Landmark last week that the Sandtrap will serve up “American bar food with a fresh homemade twist.” A quirky feature of the space will be a putting green where patrons can while the time away.

The owners have been friends since high school, said Desai. Connelly moved to Riverside about a year and a half ago and the two decided to jump at a chance to operate their own restaurant/bar after seeing Mollie’s vacate the space in March.

“We decided it might be a great opportunity in Riverside, which is such a tight-knit community,” Desai said.

The Riverside Village Board approved a liquor license for the Sand Bar in July, but

it may be a month or two until the Sandtrap opens its doors to the public. According to Desai, their architect was putting the finishing touches on the interior plans, which need to be submitted to get building permits to begin what Desai described a minor changes to the eatery’s layout.

Desai said the concept of the Sandtrap is to be “more of a family style place. We want everybody to be able to stop by.”

Meanwhile, a business named Sips & Sweets Café looks to be headed to the Arcade Building at 1 Riverside Road, occupying the space that most recently housed the gluten-free bakery Flur.

Two women, Krista Brazel and Carla Biggs, have applied for a business license for Sips & Sweets Café, which the applica-

tion describes as a coffee shop and bakery.

The owners say in the application that they will eventually also serve salads, smoothies and ice cream and participate in village events such as the Holiday Stroll.

The business has been operating as an online venture, selling custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and more. They also sell items at community events, such as the recent Westchester Fest.

Earlier Facebook posts had indicated that the owners wanted to open Sips & Sweets Cafe’s doors at the Arcade Building in September, but that the open date has been pushed back.

Attempts to reach Brazel were not successful.

A potential costly soil remediation project at Hollywood School in Brookfield has been averted with the Illinois Fire Marshal concluding the site needs no further remediation after removal of some abandoned underground pipes earlier this month.

While school officials believed they might have to wait much longer, possibly until next spring, before they could deal with what was suspected to be a leaking underground heating oil tank just outside the school walls, Riverside School District 96 was able to obtain permits from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency much more quickly.

It turned out that the 6,000-gallon oil tank had actually been removed in 1990, but three pipes that connected it to an old heating plant were left abandoned in the ground. Those pipes did contain some oil, which had leaked into the soil, but soil testing, done under the supervision of the state fire marshal, determined that the soil was not widely contaminated.

“The ultimate result in that everything they tested came up within normal parameters, which is want we want,” said District 96 school board member Joel Marhoul, who chairs the school board’s facilities committee.

The new playground at Hollywood School is expected to be completed next month. The playground equipment is expected to arrive during the first week of September and once the equipment arrives it should take about one week to install, said Ramesh Nair, the owner’s representative for Riverside Elementary School District 96, who is overseeing the

district’s construction project.

Nair said that the new multipurpose room that is being added on to the back of Hollywood School now may not be finished until October due to delays in getting materials.

The COVID pandemic, which has disrupted supply chains and delayed shipments around the world, is impacting the Hollywood project, Nair said.

Construction has been delayed while waiting for the arrival of eight to 10 crucial elements of the addition. One of those is coming from Germany.

“Material supplies [delays] is what’s really killing us right now,” Nair said. “You get one thing, you don’t get the other, but you can’t put the first one in without the second and it’s like a chain reaction.”

However, Hollywood School will open on time on Aug. 25 with rest of the building being ready to use. The completion of the multipurpose room should not be too disruptive, because all the site work is completed with the removal of the underground pipes.

Central School work wraps up Summer work at Central School in Riverside has been completed. A new fire sprinkler system was installed, replacing the decayed and outmoded system that had been in place.

The only complication was that a large valve that connects Central’s sprinkler system to the sprinkler system at L.J. Hauser Junior High School had to be replaced. The new valve cost about $10,000.

However, once final costs are calculated and all bills paid, the Central School project is expected to come in under its $100,000 budget, and some of the money in the project’s contingency fund will be returned to the district reserves.

Dealing with emotions from page 1 archdiocese would contemplate parting with the church and parish hall.

St. Nikola Church board President Tom Milutinovic told the Landmark in a phone interview on Aug. 23 that acquiring the St. Barbara properties was being considered, although he recognized the idea is not universally popular among the St. Nikola Church faithful.

“We’re dealing with people’s emotions and desires, and there’s not always logical decisions being made,” Milutinovic said.

“That’s why the board is there.”

If St. Nikola Church’s board was able to close a deal on the St. Barbara properties, the plan would be to sell its current land at the corner of Prairie and Shields avenues, which include the existing church/hall, a parking lot, vacant field lot and four single-family homes.

One single-family home immediately south of the church on Prairie Avenue serves as the parish rectory. Three homes immediately south of the church property on Forest Av- St. Barbara Church enue houses are used to house parish assistant priests and those arriving in the United States from Serbia, providing temporary accommodations, said Milutinovic.

St. Nikola Church relocated from Chicago to 4301 Prairie Ave. in Brookfield in 2010. The parish has since paid off the mortgage and in the past two years has drawn up plans to construct a new Byzantine-style church on the southeast corner of the property.

In April, the Brookfield Village Board voted unanimously to approve the parish’s plans for a new building, but that plan has been put on hold as the board and pastor explore the possibility of purchasing the St. Barbara Church properties.

“St. Barbara is perfect,” said Milutinovic.

“It has a gym, rooms for gatherings, a beautiful church, a school and the convent, where people can stay and we can help out their families.”

The Rev. Brian Kean, pastor of Holy Guardian Angels Parish, confirmed that representatives from St. Nikola Church had visited St. Barbara and expressed an interest in purchasing the entire campus.

However, Kean said that as far as he knew, there was no formal offer on table and he was unaware of any negotiations happening.

That said, any negotiations would be handled by the Archdiocese of Chicago’s real estate department, not Holy Guardian Angels, though Kean said he likely would be notified of any serious offer.

Asked whether there was any action imminent, Milutinovic said, “We’d like something imminent, but with all of the commotion, we don’t know which way to go.”

The “commotion” publicly revealed itself last week in the form of an online petition among church members which as of Aug. 23 had garnered 187 signatures after being posted Aug. 17. The petition does not mention the potential purchase of St. Barbara Church, but it does mention the possible sale of the property the parish already owns and where it currently holds services and other parish activities.

Titled simply “Save Our Church,” the petition was created by a parishioner who references the fact that the church is debt-free and that the village has already approved the construction of a new house of worship at that site.

“Currently the new parish priest and some church board members want to partition this property and sell it,” the petition states.

“Please sign this petition if you want to SAVE our CHURCH and stay at the current property!”

Several of those signing the petition also offered comments, with a particular sore point appearing to be the board of directors not involving the larger parish in the PROVIDED discussion of possible options.

“I’m signing this petition because major decisions such as buying/selling and moving the church should be discussed with the larger group of members and parishioners,” one person commented.

“These actions are incredibly disrespectful and likely unlawful decision making/execution by the board and current priest. No transparency on funding, cost, liabilities or strategy shared with the greater community.

A real disappointment and a poor example of what is expected of church leaders.”

How exactly the purchase of the St. Barbara Church properties would be funded is unclear, but Milutinovic indicated that part of the reason for the delay in building a new church is that they haven’t yet been able to raise enough money.

“Financially we haven’t gotten the fundraising to go in any direction,” Milutinovic said.

Another reason for the delay, he said, was that not everyone is satisfied with the design for the new church.

“It’s been very difficult to get everybody on board,” Milutinovic said.

The online petition, which Milutinovic said should not have been posted and contains “false information” implying the church is in danger of closing, has complicated matters.

From his point of view, however, the St. Barbara properties make the most sense in terms of parish growth.

“St. Barbara is the future,” he said. “It’s got everything.”

Vax mandates now

W

ith the FDA on Monday granting full approval to the Pfizer COVID vaccine, we are waiting for a cascade of vaccine mandates from public bodies across Riverside, Brookfield and North Riverside.

All of them.

Schools. Cops. Village hall. Parks employees. Firefighters.

There is no longer a single reason to allow public employees — especially but not exclusively those on the front lines with our kids, our elderly — to be on the public payroll and not be vaccinated.

We have as a nation reached this lunatic moment when we have the methods to stomp this virus and the majority is allowing a deranged minority to block the attempt for reasons that are nonsensical, and an assault on the common good.

Enough. Way past enough.

In these towns we have the authority to expect that our public employees are adding to the protection we need and not undermining it. How does this play out? Do school and village boards bring out resolutions and deadlines and cast the vote? We’re not sure, but we can assume these conversations have been underway, though public officials have not commented publicly on this central topic.

Monday night, the school board at the Evanston/Skokie public elementary schools took the vote to mandate vaccines with specific limits on exceptions and weekly testing for those exempt. Why aren’t these villages — progressive till it hurts — leading on this?

Last week our sister newspaper, Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest, reported on local businesses in the hospitality industry that are putting vaccine mandates in place: FitzGerald’s and Kinslahger on Roosevelt Road and Beer Shop in downtown Oak Park. Credit them for looking out for us and for themselves. Hear clearly the message from Will Duncan, owner at FitzGerald’s, who says it plainly: “The future of the live music industry depends on us kicking COVID’s ass.”

Our collective future depends on the rational use of the tools we have to sequester the misguided into increasingly narrow lives apart from the rest of us.

Survey says …

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning just dropped a new online survey seeking input and feedback on grade crossing issues along the BNSF line in Riverside and Berwyn.

It’s part of wider federal planning process to identify possible solutions for improving mobility and safety at those grade crossings – and it concerns more than just Harlem Avenue, though that one sticks out as an obvious candidate for change.

While there have been studies over the years about what, if anything, to do at the Harlem Avenue grade crossing, this is the first time in memory we can remember any agency asking residents, commuters and the employees and owners of local businesses to give them any feedback about what problems exist, the extent of those problems and what thorny issues might need to be navigated in seeking alternatives.

It’s not a long survey, about 12-15 questions. Some 200 people have already participated since it was launched last week and you have until early October, at least, to give it a look.

We all have experience with these grade crossings. We might as well lend planners our expertise.

Remembering the first day of school … as a teacher

h, the first day of school. All those fresh clean faces, hair combed, clothes pressed and new shoes ready to take them where the day would go. Now that’s just the kids! What about the teachers?

I remember the day when, as a new 20-something teacher, I was ready to meet my first class. What I wore would make an impression, and I wanted them to think I was cool. Full of enthusiasm and ready to mold minds, I thought I was prepared as much as I hoped.

I had spent time setting up the classroom with bulletin boards (I always liked to do bulletin boards) that I thought were interesting. My desk had touches of my personality and all the supplies I needed. Paper: check! Class list: check! Freshly sharpened pencils: check! Red pencils and pens for correcting: check. Pens with blue and black ink: check! Plan book with carefully made plans for the first week, including subject, pages and objectives: check. The grade book with all names in alphabetical order carefully written: check.

That book would be with me at all times. I even took it home with me so as not to get into the wrong hands.

I was ready!

The setting was St. Joseph’s School in Addison. I had already scoped out the different ways to arrive at the school -- no GPS at that time. I was ready if there was inclement weather or traffic problems.

The day came and I arrived in plenty of time and stood at the door to greet students with a smile; they were looking me over and I was looking them over. There were 59 fifth-grade students filing into my classroom. I was definitely outnumbered but ready for the challenge. After all I was the teacher.

I let them sit where they wanted, because it gave me a bit of an idea about them. I was going to change their seats anyway in a day or two because I was in charge, I was the teacher.

I turned to the blackboard, wrote my name, turned back to my charges and introduced myself and … couldn’t remember what to do next. Well, we survived and I believe they learned. I know I did.

The next year I changed schools, heading to Mater Christi School in North Riverside where I only had 46 students -- piece of cake. I was prepared because I was now the “experienced” teacher and enjoyed every bit of it.

OBITUARIES

Dr. Gregory Cowell, 67 Emergency medicine physician Gregory “Greg” Cowell M.D., 67, of Riverside, died unexpectedly on Aug. 17, 2021.

Dr. Cowell was born on Jan. 20, 1954 in Chicago to George Cowell and Vivian Joan Forsythe. He spent his childhood in Hyde Park after his parents moved from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Chicago.

For the last 26 years, he resided in Riverside with his DR. GREGORY COWELL wife, Jeannine, and his two children, Cathryn and Matthew.

Dr. Cowell attended the University of Chicago Lab Schools in Hyde Park and was a graduate of St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he earned degrees in philosophy and chemistry.

He pursued a medical degree at Rush University, and graduated in 1984. He completed an internal

medicine residency in Little Rock, Arkansas, and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Illinois Hospital, where he met his wife, Jeannine. For the last 29 years, Dr. Cowell practiced emergency medicine at various hospitals throughout Illinois.

Dr. Cowell lived life to the fullest, constantly developing new interests, and was always on to the next adventure. He loved learning and had endless energy.

His sense of adventure led him to flying planes, mountain climbing in Africa and Mexico, motorcycling throughout the United States and Mexico, and boating in Florida.

He was an avid golfer, skier, exercise enthusiast and enjoyed riding his bike to work. He was a music lover, who sang in various choirs, and enjoyed playing the piano, guitar and flute.

Dr. Cowell enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, whether it was arranging family reunions, attending concerts, playing chess or going on vacations. A family favorite was the Wisconsin Dells.

He was very proud of his two children Cathryn and Matthew who picked up his love for music. He spent countless hours listening and teaching them to play the violin or piano, or playing music with them. Dr.

Those landlords who are able to self-certify inspections will also be entitled to a reduced inspection fee.

It will cost landlords $15 annually to register their buildings, with a late fee of $5 per month for failing to do so. If village staff are used to inspect units, landlords will be charged $55 per unit. If there’s a need to re-inspect any unit, that will cost an additional $55.

Landlords who qualify for self-certification and those allowed to hired their own inspectors during the first three years of the program will pay a reduced unit inspection fee of $15 per unit.

While it’s not part of the rental registry ordinance passed by the village board on Aug. 19, the village is also planning to bolster annual fire inspections of multifamily building common areas by adding a village code inspector

to that process.

In addition to common hallways and interior and exterior stairwells, the inspectors will be able to get into mechanical rooms to inspect those spaces as well. That way, the village can spot problems like deteriorating outdoor wooden stairs, landings and railings and perhaps head off catastrophic system failures like the one that left tenants at the Tower Apartments without heat in February.

A critical part of creating the registry is obtaining contact information about renters so the village has ways of directly contacting them and providing them with information. The village is also looking to create ways for renters to contact them directly and anonymously when there are issues in rental buildings.

That could be either by email or by creat-

ing a button on the Riverside Responds app, which is monitored by village staff to flag issues throughout the village.

Village Manager Jessica Frances told trustees at the Aug. 19 meeting that her staff was already working on the tenant outreach piece, including information sheets in both English and Spanish that can be inserted into new resident packets or mass mailings to renters, based on the new info available in the rental registry. The village could also work with Riverside TV to produce informational segments directed at renters that can be aired on that channel.

“We have good landlords for the most part.

The goal is to have all of our landlords be good landlords,” said Ballerine. “If this gives incentives for people to do that, it makes sense. For a community with limited resources, this is a win-win.”

Seasoned RBHS football squad ready to break out With many returning starters, Bulldogs look to improve on last spring’s 1-5 finish

As fourth-year varsity football players, Riverside-Brookfield High School seniors Owen Murphy, Matt Novak and Brady Vaia bring an additional level of focus and urgency this season.

“I’m way more experienced. I’m a way smarter football player [now],” Novak said.

“It’s my fourth year at it. I know what to do. I know what not to do. This is the last dance. I’ve got to make it worth it.”

Experience is among the Bulldogs’ strengths as returning starters at 19 positions are determined to significantly improve upon the spring’s 1-5 finish with most losses to highly regarded opponents.

“I think [our players] really took away some valuable lessons about what it takes to be ready to go on Friday nights,” coach Brendan Curtin said. “Having a core group of guys that have played varsity football for multiple seasons should pay dividends.”

Murphy, a nationally rated baseball prospect and Notre Dame recruit, is a multiple threat at quarterback and receiver, if not other positions.

“Owen’s a very versatile player and can play basically anywhere. He’s obviously an elite athlete,” Curtin said.

Murphy said he will miss the season opener against Morton because he is attending the

USA Baseball 18-and-under National Team Trials in Florida. But, the position remains deep with senior T.J. Sloan and sophomore Diego Gutierrez.

“I just love this game. When I was a freshman, I was real timid. It’s kind of fun to be on the other side and I can’t wait,” Murphy said.

Returning two-way starters at wide receiver and defensive back are Novak and Vaia (265 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns this spring).

Junior Ryan Novak, not related to Matt, is a third-year starter who earned spring AllMetro Suburban Conference Blue honors after starring at running back (149 yards, 2 TDs) and linebacker.

“We have a lot of chemistry now. Everyone wants the same thing and the same goal so I think a tight bond is super important,” Vaia said. “[The key is] everyone doing what they’re supposed to do because we have the guys here to get stuff done.”

The offense should be even more potent behind five returning starting linemen – juniors Philly Vazzana and Joe Midona, sophomores Manny Garcia-Rivera and Jackson Ramos and senior tight end Brian Twomey.

Senior Ryan Roman and Twomey return on the defensive line.

Other key contributors include seniors Brandon Tennicott, Vinnie Maietta and C.J. Zanieski, juniors Iggy Bielobradek, Marques Turner, Drew Swiatek and Anthony Mikutis

and sophomore Luke Kumskis.

“Obviously we’re confident we can have some scoring threats. We’re still young up front but they do have some experience and they’re a very cohesive unit. I think our speed is our defining characteristic on defense,” Curtin said.

LTHS looks for bounce back season Senior Joey Antonietti made the Lyons Township varsity roster as a sophomore and became starting quarterback for the final four games.

“It feels a lot different [now as a senior].

You’re the big man. You’re the leader. You’ve just got to play like a senior,” Antonietti said.

“We’ve got a whole lot of seniors who are stepping up.”

With numerous full- and part-time returning starters, including three who excelled as freshmen, the Lions are hoping beyond their first winning season and IHSA state playoff berth since 2017.

All-West Suburban Conference Silver selection Antonietti, Owen Cherry and John Tobin are senior captains for the Lions, who were 2-2 this spring with two games canceled in Jon Beutjer’s first season as head coach.

At 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, sophomore defensive lineman Eddie Tuerk is a force. Already Tuerk has scholarship offers from Michigan, Iowa,

Ole Miss, Tennessee and Cincinnati after his showing at North Central College’s summer camp.

“Right away he got offers just the way he ran, moved,” Beutjer said. “He’s a special young man. Really impressive.”

Also back defensively are senior linemen Cole Lagowski and Mhalik Clark, seniors Cooper Schodrof and Tobin and juniors Ricky Cavaliere and Danny Pasko at linebacker, safeties Cherry and senior Owen McManaman and senior cornerback Alex Bailey.

“Defensively right now, we’re flying to the ball. Our defensive line is pretty good. They put a lot of pressure on us [in practice] and that makes us better offensively,” Beutjer said.

“Offensively, our strengths are our line, quarterback and running back. And we have some receivers that can run and catch the ball.”

Antonietti said he passed about 40 percent of LT’s offensive plays in the spring to complement sophomore running back Jack Cheney’s emergence as another talented freshman and senior Stevan Borojevic.

Junior left tackle Aidan Hallett, senior left guard Kyle Clifton and senior right tackle Liam Cashin return to the offensive line.

Senior Colin Grace and sophomore Noah Pfafflin, another freshman spring standout, are back as receivers along with Travis Stamm, this season’s varsity freshman. Senior kicker Marko Dubak is another scoring threat.

RBHS volleyball looks to build on mixed success last spring Tough schedule greets Bulldogs, but will provide experience

The Riverside-Brookfield High School girls volleyball team finished with a 5-6 record, including a 4-1 mark good enough for second in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division, during the spring.

This fall as the regular schedule returns, the Bulldogs hope to finish at the top of their division and improve on their overall record, said Mary Pakosta, entering her third season as the Bulldogs’ head coach.

“The girls are excited to be back,” she said.

“It’s a bummer that they still have to wear masks, but they’re doing fine with them and not complaining.”

RBHS has three key returning players to

serve as the foundation for this season, including senior outside hitter Colette Barnes, who had 46 kills and a .202 hitting percentage in the spring; junior middle hitter Reagan Mulcrone (33 kills, .237 hitting percentage); and senior setter Emeli Romo (team-high 147 assists).

Moreover, Pakosta is looking for junior outside hitter Sophia Cozzone to make an impact this fall.

“We will look for Sophia to contribute both offensively and defensively this season,” she said. “She learned a lot and made big improvements starting as a sophomore last season.”

Other Bulldogs to keep an eye on are junior outside hitter Elise Verdin and freshman middle hitter Sofia Owens.

The Bulldogs will compete in four invitationals this fall, along with facing quality non-conference opponents such as Hinsdale Central, Oak Park-River Forest, Rosary, Wheaton-St. Francis, and Willowbrook. Pakosta believes such a rigorous schedule will have RBHS ready for the postseason.

“We face some of the top teams in the state, which can be hard at the beginning of the sea-

son,” Pakosta said. “But it definitely gives us the experience.”

LTHS looks for conference crown Last spring, the Lyons Township High School girls volleyball team finished atop the West Suburban Conference Silver Division with a 10-2 record. And with a good amount of experience returning, coach Jill Keeve is optimistic about her team’s outlook this fall.

“They’re so ready,” said Keeve. “With what they’ve been through for the last year and a half, they’re beyond excited to get on the court. We have our sights set high this season, and the girls are ready to work.”

LTHS returns four starters, including junior middle blocker Kamryn Lee-Caracci; senior middle blocker Tia Kostic; senior outside hitter Adriana Vassek; and sophomore setter Abby Markworth.

The Lions are also expecting to get contributions from sophomore defensive specialist Kiley Mahoney, senior outside hitter Alana Pal-

ter, and junior outside hitter Grace Brennan.

LTHS opens the season Aug. 27 by hosting a tri-match with Fenwick and New Trier and will also compete in several invitationals this season, including those at Maine West, Mother McAuley and Rich Township. On top of that, there’s the West Suburban Conference Silver Division that always presents a difficult challenge.

“It’s rough being in a conference such as the West Suburban Silver. But it helps you prepare for postseason play,” Keeve said.

“Conference play will be fun this year.”

While a primary goal is to win the conference, which the Lions have done the last two seasons, the regular-season success hasn’t carried over to the state tournament, and that’s something Keeve wants to change.

“We want to go on a strong playoff run,” she said. “In the past, we’ve had good athletes, but we haven’t been able to [go deep in the postseason]. We’re hoping to play into the early part of November, and the girls are on board for it.”
