North Riverside Mayor Hubert Hermanek Jr. announced on Aug. 27 that he’s hired a new permanent fire chief, following heated criticism both online and in person at last week’s village board meeting regarding his choice for interim chief.

John Kiser, who for the past two years has served as chief of operations for the Cook County Department of Homeland Security, will start in his new post on Sept.

Brookfield Library board settles on design concept Plan for 21,000-square-foot building maximizes greenspace

Brookfield Public Library trustees on Aug. 22 settled on a formal design concept

for a new facility to be built on libraryowned land at 3541 Park Ave., with the site of the present library slated to be converted into a parking lot.

The concept was one of the two so-called

“7-7-7” designs presented by the architectural firm Product Architecture and Design, meaning it calls for a rectangularshaped building of 7,000 square feet on each of three floors – a basement level and two

D96 eases anxieties with annual first day ‘teddy bear picnic’

Five-year-old Isabelle Hlavaty had firm instructions for her mom on the first day on kindergarten last week.

“She told me I was not allowed to cry in front of her friends,” said Jenni Hlavaty, Isabelle’s mom.

So Jenni Hlavaty heeded her daughter’s instruction and waited until she got back in her car to shed a few tears on Aug. 24 after watching Isabelle walk into Hollywood School with the rest of her kindergarten class for her first regular day of kindergarten.

Isabelle was anxious to start school at Hollywood, where her sister Emma is a fifthgrader and where her eighth-grade sister, Ellie, had attended. After receiving multiple hugs and kisses from her mom she told her mom that she could go.

The first day of kindergarten these days is often more emotional for parents than children.

It was particularly emotional for Jenni Hlavaty because Isabelle is her youngest child.

“She’s my baby,” Hlavaty said.

Parents often feel conflicting emotions when their kids start kindergarten. They’re proud that the child is marking another milestone by starting school but often find themselves a bit melancholy as they realize their little darlings are starting to grow up.

“It’s surprising that they’re here already,” said Nate Anderson the father of Hollywood kindergartener Natalie Anderson. “You

Marlowe Kachlic was full of those conflicting emotions when she and her husband, Mark, brought their son Henry, the oldest of two kids, to Hollywood School for kindergarten.

“I got a little choked up bringing him in today, but ultimately I’m excited,” Marlowe Kachlic said.

Her husband said it wasn’t as tough as he thought it might be.

“I thought it was going to be way worse for me and it was perfectly fine,” Mark Kachlic said. “My wife was getting a little weepy this morning when we were ALEXA ROGALS/Staff Photographer walking away but

that was about it.”

Hollywood and other local schools go out of their way to ease the transition to school for kindergartners and their parents.

For more than a decade on the first day of school – this year it was Aug. 23 -- all four other elementary schools in Riverside District 96 have held a “teddy bear picnic,” sponsored by the schools’ PTAs. Before the picnic, students and their parents visit their kindergarten classrooms in small groups to meet the teacher and get acclimated. At Hollywood, kindergarten teacher Brianna Kwasiborski, paraprofessional Maty Potts and two other teachers were there to greet parents and students with bright smiles and brief conversation to make them feel welcome and comfortable.

Theft suspect caught on camera North Riverside police charged a local man with theft after he reportedly took a bag containing cosmetics from the front porch of a home in the 2200 block of 19th Avenue while he was delivering fliers in the neighborhood.

The victim told police that each month a company delivers a “glam bag” of cosmetics worth $30 to her home, but she failed to receive the bag in July. The company informed the victim that the bag had been delivered to her home on July 18 at 2:14 p.m.

So the woman pulled up video from her doorbell camera. In addition to showing video of the bag being delivered, the doorbell camera also captured a man between the ages of 18 and 20 wearing glasses and a red Chicago Bulls shirt walk up to the front door, place a flier on the door and pick up the glam bag before walking away.

The victim didn’t recognize the offender, but she posted the video to Facebook, where someone identified the suspect as a North Riverside resident. Police on Aug. 15 responded to the suspect’s address and found him to be wearing the same shirt as in the July video.

The man reportedly admitted taking the bag, and that as soon as he discovered the bag contained cosmetics, he threw the bag in a garbage can. He’ll appear for a hearing on Sept. 24 at the Maybrook courthouse.

Spitting mad about gambling An unidentified man has been banned from entering the Citgo Community Food and Gas business at 8545 Cermak Road in North Riverside after he reportedly became upset about the presence of video gambling machines there, cursed at the owner and spit on the credit card machine before leaving.

Police responded to the business about 2:50 p.m. on Aug. 16 after the owner called to report that a man walked up to the payment window to pay for gas by using a credit card and asked the owner if he had gambling machines.

When the owner said yes, the man allegedly began cursing at him and then spitting on the credit card machine after completing his transaction.

Police were able to track the man down by tracing the license plate on his vehicle, which was captured by a surveillance camera. Police went to the man’s residence and told him that while the owner didn’t wish to press charges, he was no longer welcome at the business.

Chicago truck driver called police on Aug. 25 about 3 p.m. to report that while he was eating lunch at a local restaurant, two people had burglarized his 2014 Volvo

semi-tractor truck, which was parked in a lot in the 8800 block of Ogden Avenue.

The victim said he was eating across the street when he observed a pickup truck and two people next to his vehicle. It appeared the two were trying to remove the semi’s four batteries, which are located under the driver’s side door.

The victim ran across the street and confronted the two, demanding his belongings back. They surrendered three backpacks, which they’d taken from the unlocked cab of the truck, and then fled in the pickup truck eastbound on Ogden Avenue.

While the two offenders had started the process of removing the batteries, they were not successful in doing so. However, $20 in cash and a bracelet valued at $100 was reported missing from one of the backpacks.

■ Brookfield police responded to House of Doors, 9038 Ogden Ave., on the morning of Aug. 24 after someone called to report that overnight a work van had been tampered with.

The rear door and side door locks had been punched out, and there were pry marks on the side door, but no entry appeared to have been gained.

Wrong car A 29-year-old Brookfield woman called police after fleeing a vehicle she mistakenly believed to be her rideshare, after the male driver put his hand on her knee and asked her, “Where do you want to go to have fun?”

The victim said she ordered an Uber at about 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 and was waiting for it outside when a black minivan pulled up and parked in front of her driveway.

She was expecting a black Toyota Corolla, but as she approached the van, the driver waved at her and told her to sit in the front seat.

After going a short distance, the driver — described as a heavy-set white male between 50 and 60 years old, short salt-andpepper hair, a full beard and an eastern European accent — placed his hand on her and propositioned her.

She fled from the vehicle at a red light at Ogden Avenue and DuBois Boulevard and walked home. When she arrived home, she noticed an alert from Uber that her ride was canceled at about 2:10 p.m.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Aug. 15-26, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Habitual DUI offender gets D102 hires new tech director probation in Riverside case Tasha Schleicher had been in custody since April

The woman Riverside’s police chief called “one of the worst DUI offenders in the United States” was sentenced to 24 months’ probation after pleading guilty to one count of felony driving under the influence on Aug. 20 in front of Judge Ramon Ocasio III at the Maybrook courthouse.

Tasha Schleicher, 41, of New Hope, Minnesota, had been in custody at Cook County Jail since her arrest on April 2, when police responded to a 911 call reporting a woman passed out behind the wheel of a car at a Harlem Avenue gas station.

When police arrived on the scene, Schleicher was out of the car trying to refuel her vehicle at a pump that dispensed kerosene. Schleicher also told police at the time that she had left her children at a motel near Riverside, a statement that turned out to be false.

Police later were able to account for all 11 of Schleicher’s children and learned that she had at least six prior drunken driving arrests in six different states dating back to 2007.

Schleicher reportedly used aliases in other DUI arrests and, at the time of the Riverside incident, she was wanted on warrants in Nebraska, Idaho and Oregon.

Minnesota Child Protective Services had taken custody of all of Schleicher’s children, ranging in age from infant to 17, after she was arrested for drunken driving in September 2017 near Rochester, Minnesota.

Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel called Schleicher’s sentence “disappointing.”

“This continues to demonstrate that as a nation, drunk driving and drugged driving are not treated as serious criminal offenses,” Weitzel said in a press release. “Society’s views need to change and habitual DUI offenders need to be held accountable for their actions.”

Vigil protesting family separation held in Brookfield

Organizer: ‘I don’t understand why we’re so hateful’

Last August after white supremacists rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, a Brookfield woman who grew up in Stafford, Virginia, was so disgusted she decided to organize a local peace vigil against hate at Eight Corners in Brookfield. About 20 to 25 people came out.

This year Jessica Garcia, whose husband Wilson came to the United States from Guatemala at the age of 2, decided to team up with Indivisible Brookfield, of which she is a member, to organize another vigil.

The focus of this year was to protest the now-discontinued policy of the Trump administration of separating children from their Central American parents who were seeking asylum in the United States. While the policy has ended, hundreds of children remain separated from their parents as a result of it.

“My husband is an immigrant,” Garcia said. “A lot of people that I love near and dear are immigrants, and I just don’t under-

stand why we’re so hateful and why we don’t see the positive of immigration.”

Nearly 25 people, including some elected officials, attended the roughly 30-minute vigil on Aug. 26 at Progress Park at Eight Corners.

In addition to Garcia, four others spoke at the vigil, including the Rev. Martha Daniels, senior pastor at Holy Covenant Metropolitan Community Church in Brookfield; The Rev. Karl Sokol of Brookfield’s Compassion United Methodist Church; Justin Hanson, a write-in candidate for U.S. Congress in the 3rd District; and activist Betty Alzamora of PASO West Suburban Action Project, an immigrant rights group.

Hanson, a Republican who once worked for a couple of top congressional Republicans in the House of Representatives, decried the policy of separating children from their parents.

“This policy is not who we are,” said Hanson, a lawyer who lives in LaGrange and recently announced his write in campaign.

Hanson is trying to chart a moderate position in his longshot bid for Congress, which

Alzamora made the most pointed remarks, lighting into Gov. Bruce Rauner for vetoing last week three of five bills passed by the General Assembly to protect people who are in the United States illegally.

and Illinois does not welcome his racist and white supremacist view of life.”

Garcia said she believes it is important to act on the local level and said that it was important to vote in November. She moved to Brookfield three years ago.

“We love Brookfield,” Garcia said. “We’ve been welcomed here. We love it here. It’s a happy and loving community and let’s get everyone together and show Chicagoland that we care.”

Man sues Brookfield police for excessive force, false arrest Federal complaint filed after charges against 64-year-old are dismissed

A 64-year-old retired CTA mechanic has sued seven Brookfield police officers and the village of Brookfield in U.S. District Court, alleging excessive force, false arrest and malicious prosecution in connection to two separate incidents at his home in 2016 and 2017.

The officers named in the federal lawsuit are Andrew Lowry, Rafael Alvarado, Nicholas Hahn, Anthony Zeman, Mark McEwan, Raymond Paton and Daniel Flores.

The suit was filed on Aug. 9, less than two months after all charges lodged against the plaintiff, Rogelio Valdez, from both incidents were dismissed in Cook County Circuit Court on May 16.

Valdez seeks unspecified monetary compensation for, according to the complaint, “damages, which will be proven in court.”

Reached late last week, Police Chief James Episcopo declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.

Brookfield police arrested Valdez at his residence for the first time on Aug. 9, 2016, according to the lawsuit, after Valdez called police to have his 43-year-old daughter removed because she was intoxicated.

The police report for that incident stated that Officer Lowry spoke to Valdez in the stairwell of the building’s common area, while other responding officers talked to others at the residence.

Lowry was then heard in a physical altercation with Valdez, according to the police report, with Lowry telling him he was under arrest for “hitting a police officer.” The lawsuit claims Valdez was grabbed by police, shoved over a bannister and handcuffed before being moved quickly down the stairway.

The police report claims Valdez was resisting while being taken down the stairs, causing Lowry to fall and break his ankle.

The lawsuit disputes that Valdez was resisting and states that Valdez also fell down the stairs at the same time, resulting in a head and foot injury.

Lowry’s injury required surgery to re-

pair, and he was off the streets for about two months after the incident.

Police returned to Valdez’s home on the night of May 4, 2017. According to the lawsuit, Valdez was asleep when four officers showed up at his residence “in the middle of the night,” banged on the door and announced they had an arrest warrant for his daughter.

Valdez claims police refused to show him the warrant and that they forced their way inside his apartment while his daughter was getting dressed, forcing him against a wall and hurting his shoulder.

Police charged Valdez with battery and resisting a peace officer, according to the lawsuit. Valdez claims police reports about the incident “contained false and/or misleading information about the circumstances of [Valdez’s] arrest as well as the justification for their use of force.”

The police report from the May 4 incident contradicts Valdez’s statement that he was asleep, with police responding to his residence after the building’s landlord called

to report that Valdez’s daughter, who had been kicked out of the apartment, had returned.

Police reported hearing Valdez arguing with his daughter before they entered the residence. Valdez, who was intoxicated according to police, answered the door when police knocked, and his daughter was standing in the room with him.

According to police, Valdez’s daughter had failed to register with the Illinois State Police at as a violent offender to youth. She told police she could provide them with documentation proving she was granted a continuance on the matter by the court.

While the daughter went to produce that paperwork, Valdez allegedly became “hostile” with officers, at one point reportedly pushing a police officer. At that time police placed him under arrest for battery and also arrested his daughter for obstructing a police officer for allegedly interfering with the arrest of her father. The daughter was not charged for failing to register as a violent offender.

The estimated cost of the preferred plan is about $9.7 million. Library trustees chose the plan from a group of four plans presented to them by architect Dan Pohrte on Aug. 14, ranging in cost from $9.5 million to $11.4 million.

According to conceptual floor plans for the preferred design provided by Pohrte, the lower level would house staff offices and a large, flexible meeting room capable of holding at least 100 people.

In addition to the circulation desk, the first floor would house the Youth Services Department, with an activity area and separate storytime room, along with stacks for youth fiction and non-fiction books and tables.

The second floor would house the Adult Services Department, a number of small quiet study rooms, a larger quiet study/ periodical room, a room for teens and a maker space.

The preferred plan also prioritizes outdoor greenspace. The rectangular building’s principal façade will face Park Avenue, with entry at the southwest corner, and it will either be placed closer to the

street or to the alley.

In either arrangement, a 50-foot wide area is available for greenspace either in front of or behind the building. If the building is placed closer to the alley, the green space in front would become part of a formal entry plaza that could also be used for programming.

If the building is placed closer to the street, the 7,500 square feet of green space might be able to be fenced in and used for outdoor programming, particularly for youth services.

Trustees also preferred a parking lot plan that includes parking for 22 vehicles and 6,500 square feet of green space at the point of the triangle formed by Lincoln Avenue and Grand Boulevard, providing an even more appealing visual approach to the new building.

Moreover, the design – depending on where the building is placed on the lot -- would allow the library board to expand the building by between 8,400 and 12,600 square feet in the future, if the need arises.

At the library board’s next meeting on Sept. 26, Pohrte said he will provide architectural renderings to give trustees a better idea of how the building will look based on its position on the site.

The architectural firm will also begin working with the village and with its engineering consultants to nail down parking and storm water detention requirements and survey utilities in order to firm up cost estimates for the project.

One, a 25,000-square-foot building with a 5,000-square-foot lower level and two 10,000-square-feet above-ground levels, was essentially rejected outright because of its cost -- $11.4 million.

The library board also wasn’t enthusiastic about two variations on a 20,000-square-foot facility packaged in a square-ish building which would have occupied most of the site at 3541 Park Ave. One variation would have been a twostory building with no basement and

The library has no plans to seek funding via referendum after getting turned back on that front in 2016.

In the meantime, library official continue to work with their financial consultant on securing funding and, behind the scenes, to raise money from private benefactors through a newly created nonprofit foundation.

Over the years through annual fund transfers, the library has saved about $5.2 million in a special building reserve fund.

Coughran said that the board at the end of 2018 may transfer another $500,000 into the fund, bringing the special reserve’s balance to about $5.7 million.

Riverside puts Harlem Ave. parcel on the market Property that housed longtime dry cleaning biz listed for $260,000

With no privately brokered deal apparently in sight, Riverside village trustees on Aug. 16 voted to hire a commercial real estate broker to market the village-owned property at 2710 Harlem Ave. Oak Park-based David King and Associates has been hired as the exclusive listing agent for the property, which comes with an asking price of $260,000.

The longtime site of a former dry-cleaning business, the property was purchased by Riverside in May 2017 for $78,425. However, the village incurred expenses for asbestos and soil remediation along with demolition of the glass, steel and brick building.

Village officials were attracted to the roughly 6,300-square-foot parcel because it sat, at that time, between two other underutilized commercial parcels in the 2700 block of Harlem Avenue.

The hope had been to entice a developer or one of the other private property owners to assemble two or all three of the properties in order to create a significant commercial development.

A Forest View resident, Kiser was hired as regional coordinator for the Cook County Department of Homeland Security in 2014 and was promoted to chief of operations two years later.

Since 2002, he has been a commander for the Forest View Fire Department, serving part time in that capacity since 2014, when Forest View dissolved their full-time department.

While Kiser said he’s enjoyed his years with the county, he’s wanted to get back to firefighting full time.

“While it was a great experience, I wanted to get back to a firehouse,” said Kiser, who spent the first 28 years of his life in Brookfield. “Even though a chief, at heart I’m a fireman.”

Kiser has also served as a water rescue course coordinator and fire, rescue and HAZMAT instructor at the Romeoville Fire Academy.

He got his start in the fire service in 1994 as a paid-on-call firefighter in Riverside, where

After buying the land, the Riverside Village Board voted to create an official business district along the west side of Harlem Avenue from Berkeley Road south to the alley just south of the Citgo gas station at 539 Longcommon Road.

Trustees also imposed a 1 percent sales tax within the business district, the proceeds of which can be used to support redevelopment efforts there.

Cristin Evans, one of IDWSAL’s co-founders, expressed support for Hermanek’s decision.

“We would like to thank not only Mayor Hermanek for responding to the community’s concerns and taking appropriate action, but also our membership and many others in the community who showed up and spoke up on behalf of women everywhere,” Evans said in an emailed statement on behalf of the group.

Hermanek downplayed the role of public pressure in the decision to seek additional candidates for the chief ’s position and the quick hire. He also praised Boman for a firm, calm command of the department during his time at the helm.

“He did keep the lid on things while I tried to find the right person,” Hermanek said.

“He did serve well for the six weeks he was here.”

North Riverside Firefighters Union Local 2714 had urged Hermanek to choose the new chief from within their ranks, but union president Chris Kribales, who has had Kiser as an instructor on a couple of occasions, said Kiser appears to be knowledgeable and well-credentialed.

“I look forward to working with any chief,” Kribales said. “At the end of the day, hopefully, everybody is on the same page.”

Brookfield proposes sweeping use changes at 8 Corners Planning commissioners delay recommendation to allow more notice

Members of the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission on Aug. 23 deferred making what could have amounted to a sweeping change in the zoning code related to what kinds of businesses and other uses are allowed in the village’s Eight Corners business district.

Commissioners held off until at least their meeting on Sept. 27 on deciding whether to recommend or modify changes for the commercial zoning district, which sought to eliminate 26 uses from the C-3 district’s use table, including several that already exist and have the potential to draw traffic or produce sales taxes.

Among the permitted or special uses on the chopping block in the district are day care centers, cultural exhibits, artist studios or art instruction, religious assembly, veterinary offices, indoor and outdoor assembly and entertainment, recording studios, fraternal organizations, business/professional offices and gas stations, among others.

The only remaining uses permitted by right would be restaurants and bars, prepared food businesses, multifamily and mixed-use buildings, financial services businesses (except for personal credit businesses), medical/dental/health practitioner offices, personal improvement services (such as hair and nail salons) and pet-grooming businesses.

According to Adam Durkin, the attorney representing the village before the commission, any existing use in the Eight Corners district would be grandfathered in, and the use would run with the land in the future.

But, Jennifer Hendricks, one of the commissioners said she was uncomfortable with recommending “a big potential change for the district” without sufficient notice being given to property owners.

website and a legal notice in the Landmark, published on Aug. 8.

“It makes me uncomfortable that there are potentially property owners in this district that are going to be affected in the future by this, who may not have the opportunity to hear the village present its case and to speak their piece,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks and Commissioner Patrick Benjamin asked why some uses, such as veterinary clinics and indoor entertainment venues -- which might be tax revenue generators – were eliminated from the use table.

“A lot of those indoor assembly uses – billiards, video arcades, bowling, things like that – are potential tax-producing properties that might have some really good symbiosis with the middle school that’s there,” Hendricks said, referring to S.E. Gross Middle School, which abuts the C-3 district. “I wonder if that’s really something we want to prohibit.”

But Durkin indicated that the broad prohibition regarding assembly was in response to a wish to prevent future applications for religious assembly in the district. He also said the indoor assembly prohibition would prevent such things as community centers from being built in the C-3 district.

Linda Sokol Francis, who owns several key properties at Eight Corners has, in the past, tried and failed to win approval for a community center/Methodist church at Eight Corners.

If you want to prohibit religious assembly, Durkin said, you have to outlaw all assembly.

“You can’t prohibit certain assemblies and allow other kinds of assemblies, so there’s no real difference between them,” Durkin said. You can’t allow secular kinds of assemblies and prohibit religious assemblies, so if you want to prohibit new religious assemblies from coming in, you have to look at all your other secular assemblies.”

“The general intent … is to ‘provide for the development of a concentrated, pedestrianoriented commercial shopping area,’” said Community and Economic Development Director Nicholas Greifer, reading from the village code.

That moratorium followed on the heels of the village board voting to allow a special use permit for religious assembly at Compassion Factory Art Gallery, 9210 Broadway Ave., which is owned by Compassion United Methodist Church Inc. The congregation, which does not have a formal “church” building, uses the art gallery for a two-hour religious service each Sunday.

The Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended denial of the special use permit for special assembly based on the Brookfield Comprehensive Plan, which envisioned Eight Corners as a pedestrianoriented retail/commercial district.

But, the Brookfield Village Board voted to reject the commission’s recommendation, indicating that the village would be inviting a lawsuit if the special use permit was

denied.

The Rev. Karl Sokol, who owns Compassion Factory Art Gallery and is pastor of Compassion United Methodist Church, said the village’s fixation on preventing a church from sprouting at Eight Corners might result in unintended consequences that would be detrimental to the business district.

Sokol said the village’s comprehensive plan envisions the Eight Corners district as a vibrant area. He pointed to downtown LaGrange as an area that was alive with a diverse mix of uses, from a movie theater to a farmers market to an escape room business to a library – all of which would be prohibited at Eight Corners with the proposed text amendment.

Brookfield’s comprehensive plan calls Eight Corners “one of the most diverse employment nodes” in the village, said Sokol, who suggested waiting until a new village manager was hired before making such sweeping changes at Eight Corners.

“I think everyone in this room knows that it’s kind of directed at everything trying to stop a church, but that can let lots of other opportunities fall by the wayside,” Sokol said.

ith the hiring of John Kiser as North Riverside’s new fire chief, it appears that the soap opera that’s been playing out with the fire department since mid-July has ended.

At least, we hope that’s the case.

Kiser takes over on Sept. 1 and will be sworn in Sept.

4, ending the brief but controversial interim term of Scott Boman, whose surprise hiring back in July caused swift backlash.

It was never very clear just how “interim” Boman was meant to be. At the time of his hire, it appeared more than likely he’d end up the full-time chief, but that soured quickly after residents and community activists started calling on the mayor to keep looking.

By all accounts, during his time in North Riverside, Boman was steady and hard-working. His relationship with union firefighters appears to have been professional and amicable.

But our belief is that Boman’s fate as the long-term chief was sealed by the method by which he was chosen.

It just didn’t look good.

The concept of a department head search being done undercover, with little to no input from other top officials, was a miscalculation.

With Boman aboard as an interim, however, it allowed the mayor to reopen his search in the light of day. It drew candidates who otherwise may not have known about the opening – like Kiser, apparently – and it allowed the mayor a more thorough vetting process, including the input from three other elected officials who interviewed Kiser.

In addition to that, the new chief is a known quantity in this area, someone who has worked with the fire and police chiefs in western Cook County, including North Riverside, Riverside and Brookfield.

Kiser is also civic-minded. He’s served as an elected official in Forest View as a park district commissioner and as a member of the Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 Board of Education.

As a member of the District 103 school board during a transitional period in 2011-13, he was part of the team the negotiated a new union contract for district aides and was involved in the search for a new superintendent.

It’s also, we think, positive that this isn’t a job to supplement Kiser’s retirement. This is his complete focus, which is good for a department who needs someone with that approach.

While union firefighters would have preferred that the new chief come from their ranks, in reality that was never going to happen. With labor arbitration still pending and the lingering effects of four years of brutal labor/management unrest, someone from the outside was always going to be chosen.

The question, of course, was: Who would want such a job and such a headache?

The answer, for now, is John Kiser. We hope it’s for the long haul.

Scenic, serene, special Swan Pond

icnicking at Swan Pond, sounds like a fun idea. Add it to the many happenings at Swan Pond through the decades.

For me, Swan Pond has always been a lovely place, although I never saw a swan, but have seen many other things.

One can only imagine the Swan Pond of yesteryear as people came to the “country” from the city to spend a day with family and friends. Moving up in time, I remember my mother always told me not to go there because the gypsies would kidnap me. Trust me, there were some children that would have been returned with gold coins just to be rid of them. I never did know anyone captured by the gypsies, but it kept me out of there till the teen years.

Yes, we did go down there at night, boys and girls.

Ah, young romance, strolling down the path hand in hand. Yes, sometimes there may have been beer or two. OK, I admit it was sort of a rite of passage. Usually it wasn’t long before the police would drive down into Swan Pond and kids would scatter, party over.

Many events have taken place at the lovely site we covered the winter happenings in a previous column.

There have been war reenactments, with troops

spending the night just as it was done before. It was then I realized I had been born in the right period of time. I would have been a lousy pioneer, and we probably would have still been across the big waters.

There were soccer games and playground equipment down there, and when there was a flood, what stuck up above the water gave you an idea of just how deep it was.

Couples still walk the path and the setting provides the romantic atmosphere for proposals.

Wedding parties and prom groups take advantage of the scenery to preserve the event through pictures. I remember attending a wedding which, following the church ceremony, convened there for fireworks. It was quite impressive.

Swan Pond has withstood the passage of time and continued to have varied uses but manages to stay the same -- the trees, the embankment, fishing, boats drifting through -- and now we will have a picnic.

Take the time to sit on one of the benches and imagine Swan Pond from another time, possibly when there were Native Americans, early settlers, families having picnics. If you try hard enough and really use your imagination, you many even see a swan.

Riverside village campus cost ‘outrageous’ I am writing to say that the estimated cost is between $22 million and $28.5 million for the Riverside village campus (“Options mulled for Riverside village campus,” News, Aug. 22) is outrageous.

Seriously? It is already expensive to live here, including the vehicle sticker prices and, mostly, the high property taxes.

I don’t understand the logic in this proposal and how it could even be considered. I’m all for improving our community and its appearances, but come on, this is totally out of line. So, tack on the high taxes we already pay and add this ridiculously-high expense. Where will it end?

We spent millions of dollars on the RBHS renovations, more than once. I don’t even have children, yet I was expected to help pay for that. Now, the village is proposing a multi-million dollar cosmetic project.

My husband worked all his life and has now been able to retire. We are trying to cut back on unnecessary ex-

penses, then I read about this on the front page of The Landmark.

We either need to elect new officials who are interested in lowering our expenses and looking out for its residents’ pocketbooks, or working with a smarter budget for such lavish proposals.

Don’t get me wrong: I was born and raised here and find Riverside both charming and inviting. But, this needless spending has to stop.

The expenses in this town are constantly going up; and this needs to stop now. You need to figure out how to grow business and bring new business to the area where there are so many vacant business sites to help cover some of our taxes.

There is so much more that needs to be done. Try lowering our expenses, not spiking them.

Emil “Buddy” Beran, 87, of Brookfield and formerly of Chicago, died on Aug. 25, 2018.

Born on February 12, 1931, Mr. Beran served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After the war, he became a middle school teacher and was a longtime parishioner of St. Bruno’s.

Mr. Beran was the EMIL BERAN husband of the late Renetta R. Beran (nee Lesniak); the father of Venessa Beran and Collette (George Adamczyk) Beran; and the uncle and great-uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his seven siblings.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, Aug. 29 from 9 until 9:30 a.m. at Hitzeman Funeral Home, 9447 31st St. in Brookfield. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Louise de Marillac Church, followed by Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.

Born on Sept. 16, 1928, she graduated from Good Counsel High School in 1945 and briefly attended DePaul University where she met Victor Carlberg. They married in 1950 and raised five children in LaGrange Park and Westmont.

For Ms. Carlberg, family always came DOROTHY CARLBERG first. She involved herself with virtually all of her children’s activities, from ballet, baseball and pet parades.

She spent much of her later years investigating her eastern European roots, especially her Polish ties, which entailed several trips to Poland. This interest with the Polish language greatly facilitated her genealogical studies.

Ms. Carlberg loved music, particularly Bobby Vinton. She was smart and sassy, wacky and witty, boisterous and bling-y, and she once almost read a book. A bright, quick

HopStop 2018, the annual craft beer festival in Riverside, moved to East Quincy Street this year and on Aug. 25 drew a sell-out crowd of more than 750 people, who came to sample beers, ciders and liquor from more than 20 local brewers and distillers, including Quincy Street Distillery; much on savory snacks, including gluten-free pretzels, from Flur Bakery; enjoy music from four bands; visit Higgins Glass; and put in bids on artwork at the Riverside Arts Center, which co-sponsored the event this year with the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and Riverside Foods. RBHS edges Morton in OT

Bulldogs rally twice with clutch plays to earn win

The Riverside-Brookfield High School football team blew out Morton 33-0 in its opener last season. That comprehensive victory set the tone for a five-game winning streak and an 8-2 record overall.

The rematch on Friday at RBHS was considerably closer as the host Bulldogs edged the Mustangs 20-14 in overtime.

With so many new starters this season, it’s too early to tell if the Bulldogs’ Week 1 victory will translate to the bigger picture as well as it did last year. Regardless, a win is a win and RBHS earned it with critical contributions from both sides of the ball plus solid play from special teams.

“We have a young team with not many

returning starters,” RBHS coach Brendan Curtin said. “We have a bunch of guys who are getting their first taste of varsity football this season. I think we grew up a lot against Morton. We found out a lot about ourselves which is very encouraging.”

After RBHS scored first in overtime to take a 20-14 lead, Morton lost the ball on a fumble to end the game.

Luke Gentile scored the game-winning touchdown for RBHS on a 5-yard run. Along with teammate Brandon Aguilar, Gentile forced the aforementioned fumble in overtime. The Bulldogs’ Connor Pitts recovered the loose ball to secure the victory.

Morton scored first on a broken play that went for 60 yards, but RBHS responded with a 14-play scoring drive that included a pair of fourth-down conversions. The Bulldogs’ Chris Doherty capped off the drive on a 4-yard run into the end zone.

RBHS tied the game again at 14-all in the fourth quarter when Doherty scored a touchdown on a 45-yard run off a sprint draw play.

Morton had an opportunity win the game with 39 seconds left in regulation; but the Mustangs’ 41-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.

RBHS junior quarterback Dario Marchica turned in an efficient performance, completing 16 of 20 passes for 93 yards. Fellow junior Matt Torres also saw playing time at quarterback.

“We switched off a bit between our quarterbacks during the game,” Curtin said. “Each of them brings certain things to the table.”

Doherty rushed for 57 yards on nine carries. Wide receiver Joe Shelven contributed six catches for 55 yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker Dominick Rowe had seven tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack. Elliot Royer finished with 7.5 tackles and a pass breakup.

Luke Gentile tallied five tackles.

RBHS hosts Wauconda on Friday, Aug. 31.

Kickoff is 7:15 p.m. RBHS beat Wauconda 43-21 last season.

“With the exception of last year, Wauconda typically has a playoff-caliber team,” Curtin said. “They have big kids on the offensive and defensive lines. We have had some good games in the past. It’s Bulldogs versus Bulldogs.”

LTHS stymied by Sandburg in opener Lions’ Dutton shows promise at quarterback and Rickman scores 2 TDs

With only a handful of returning starters, virtually every Lyons Township High School position player was scrutinized during the football team’s home opener against Sandburg.

None more closely than first-year starting quarterback JJ Dutton, who replaced three-year starter Ben Bryant (now at Cincinnati), one of the most accomplished signal-callers in program history.

With all that considered, Dutton acquitted himself well despite a 24-13 loss against Sandburg.

Dutton completed 16 of 28 passes for 144 yards, highlighted by a 21-yard touchdown pass to Sean Rickman at the 8:33 mark of the third quarter. That scoring play gave the Lions their last lead of the game at 1310. Dutton also rushed for 28 yards on nine carries.

The Eagles responded with 14 unanswered points en route to the nonconference victory. Multiple turnovers and penalties by LTHS helped their cause.

The Lions scored first when Rickman scored on a 10-yard run at 4:55 of the first quarter. After Kevin O’Connell missed the extra point, LTHS led 6-0.

Dutton set up Rickman’s touchdown on a superb 20-yard run, in which he cut back twice to elude five Sandburg defenders. He also tossed a 30-yard pass over the middle to wide receiver Hareson Willis.

Trailing LTHS 6-3, the Eagles took the lead on Andrew Schaab’s 6-yard run off an inside handoff. The Eagles made the extra point to go up 10-7 with 8:30 left until halftime.

The Lions finished with 190 yards of total offense. LTHS running back Tyrone Brown was held in check, rushing for 25 yards on 12 carries.

LTHS visits Hinsdale South on Friday, Aug. 31 in a conference crossover game.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Fenwick boys golf The Friars are off to a promising start this fall with notable wins in both invitational and dual-match competition.

D96 board cool toward Ames design concepts Improvements there must address needs of entire district

The Riverside Elementary School District 96 Board of Education has given a cool reception to the four conceptual drawings for an addition to Ames School that its architect presented to the board last month.

Most board members thought that at least two of the four conceptual drawings submitted by the architect far exceeded what the board is willing to spend and would provide Ames with amenities, such as a large gym, that the district’s other three elementary schools don’t have.

“The plans that were presented were not addressing the true district needs, I think,” said school board President Jeff Miller. “Whatever we do at one school we have to be consistent and do, obviously in a scaled way, across the district.”

Miller said that each school in the district has space issues and the board does not want to spend all its money on Ames.

“I think there’s a consensus that we need some extra capacity at each school,” Miller said. “I don’t think we really need to double, or more than double, the size of Ames.”

Board members say that they can spend

about $15 million and still keep their reserves at a level they are comfortable with, but they don’t want to spend all of that money on Ames.

The conceptual drawings presented by the architect last month came with a very rough preliminary cost estimate, ranging from about $8.5 million to around $15 million.

Board members have shown little interest in borrowing money for construction when the district is sitting on reserves of approximately $30 million.

The board knows that Ames needs to be enlarged with a couple new classrooms and a new multipurpose room. Ames students each lunch in the gym and the school’s former multipurpose room has been split into two separate classrooms, one for music and one for art.

“I think everyone agrees that we need to add some additional capacity at Ames,” Miller said.

But Miller said a large gym and several new large learning spaces that are not classrooms was just not realistic.

Board members Rich Regan and Lynda Murphy, who lead the district’s facilities advisory committee, were directed to review the district’s space priorities and rank them to give the architects clearer direction.

“I really think the board’s direction was we have to go back to basics here and look at what’s necessary,” Miller said. “If we’re going to do something more ambitious at Ames, then it would have to address some of the problems we identified at other schools, like preschool.”

Board members would like the architect to present a plan that would allow the district to perhaps shift its preschool to Ames School from Blythe Park School. That would open up additional classrooms at Blythe Park and perhaps allow it to house two sections per grade.

The board is also considering moving the district’s administrative offices out of the Hauser/Central School campus, perhaps moving it to Ames or somewhere else to open up additional space at Hauser or Central.

“If we’re going to do something really ambitious at [Ames] it would have to incorporate some of the pressing needs that exist across the entire district,” Miller said. “We want the architect to come up with the most efficient, cost-effective options.”

Board members also were unhappy with some unexpected additional expenses connected with the demolition of the house at 92 Repton House, which the district purchased to allow expansion at Ames.

Afterward there was a nearly 90-minutelong picnic held outside for the kindergarteners and their parents at Hollywood. While many of the kindergartners romped on the Hollywood playground, parents chatted and got to know each other.

The picnic is a way for the kids and parents to meet each other and become more familiar with the school, said Hollywood Principal Kim Hefner.

“I think it’s nice that they have the picnic the day before, so everybody can meet each other and they can meet the teacher,” Jenni Hlavaty said. “It’s not like walking into something brand new.”

It worked, because on the second day of school Friday there were no tears from the Hollywood kindergarteners as they said goodbye to their parents.

“They had already met me so they gave their last hug and followed me right in,” Kwasiborski said on Friday. “We didn’t have a single tear; it was incredible.”

begin. In fact, she was disappointed that she did not start at the regular time on Thursday, like her sister. Isabelle has attended many Hollywood School functions in the past and is already a familiar face at the school.

“I love one of my teachers here,” she said, referring to Kwasiborski.

The village of Riverside is requiring the district to restore a curb that was cut for the house’s driveway at an estimated cost of about $4,900. The village has indicated that they would not require that work to be done immediately which would give the district time to rebid the work, according to school board member Joel Marhoul, who also serves on the Riverside Planning and Zoning Commission.

The village is also requiring the district to remove sewer lines all the way out to Repton Road at an estimated cost of about $10,000.

School board members were already upset that demolition of the home cost about $87,000. Board members’ ire was directed at the district’s architectural firm, DLA Architects, for not anticipating these expenses.

“We need the architect to be talking more with the village,” said Miller at the board’s Aug. 15 meeting.

Given the cool reception to DLA’s conceptual drawings and the unanticipated extra costs of the house demolition, DLA appears to be on shaky ground with some board members.

“This board should be considering other options for future projects,” Regan said at the Aug. 15 meeting.

In Brookfield-LaGrange Park District 95, parents and students are in the kindergarten classroom together on the first day of school for an abbreviated day that lasts for only about an hour and serves as an orientation.

“It’s just a good way for the parents and kids to come in and I just feel like the kids are more comfortable,” said Brook Park School Principal Mike Sorensen.

At Komarek School in North Riverside and Lincoln School in Brookfield, kindergartners and their parents can meet their teacher and view their classroom on an evening the week before school starts, but parents typically do not go into the classroom on the first day of kindergarten.

“Our teachers are very good about going outside and meeting and greeting with the parents and the students,” said Komarek Principal Jason Gold. “The overall goal is to have the children just go in with the teacher.”

At Congress Park School, on the day before school starts there’s a teacher meet-and-greet for kindergartners and their parents, who come in for about an hour to drop off supplies and visit the classroom. But on the first day the kids went into school without the parents.

Kindergarteners generally start school full of innocence and enthusiasm, though some of their enthusiasms may not last.

Hollywood kindergartner Penelope Wendell said that she was excited about doing homework.
