For the second time in less than a year racist graffiti was found scrawled in a girls’ bathroom at Riverside Brookfield High School on Aug. 21. The racist graffiti was discovered in the same bathroom where similar graffiti was found last November. Like last year, the graffiti stated “whites only” according to a student who was part of a meeting Assistant Principal of Student Affairs Dave Mannon held last Thursday morning with 20 student leaders to discuss the incident. According to the student Mannon said the graffiti had the same or similar handwriting as last year’s racist graffiti. The person who wrote the graffiti has apparently not yet been identified but administrators have their suspicions. According to the student, Mannon said that the graffiti appeared after administrators had spoken to a student about a photo of a Confederate flag that was on the student’s Snapchat page. Last year administrators waited six days to publicly disclose the racist graffiti. North Riverside to begin Cermak water main upgrade First phase of multi-year project kicks off in September

By BOB UPHUES Editor

When North Riverside trustees voted to pass the village’s operating budget in July, they earmarked more than $850,000 for water and sewer system improvements, which included the first phase of a multi-year project to install a new 12-inch water main along Cermak Road from First Avenue to 17th Avenue. On Aug. 14, the village board voted to award a $496,589 contract to Melrose Park-based Cerniglia Construction for phase one of that project, installing a section of new 12-inch water main from First Avenue to 5th Avenue. North Riverside is beginning to address its water system infrastructure after about three years of work to improve its sewer system. In the 2017-18 fiscal year, the village plans to spend about $165,000 for the final phase of lining sections of sewer that are showing signs of cracking. In the two prior years, the village spent about $450,000 on sewer maintenance.

Water main improvements will be ongoing for the next several years, according to Public Works Director Tim Kutt, with the main “feeder” lines along Cermak Road and 26th Street/Forestview Avenue the first to be addressed. “They are certainly coming up to an age where we have to start a program,” Kutt said. The Cermak Road water main, which is between 70 and 80 years old, is reaching the end of its useful life. North Riverside Finance Director Sue Scarpiniti said that the Cermak Road project will be completed over the next four to five years. The cost for the improvements were built into water fee increases also passed by the village board on Aug. 14. In August 2016, the Cermak Road water main suffered a major failure at 7th Avenue, which resulted in the village issuing a boil order that lasted for a day and a half. Water gushed out of the failed section of pipe at a rate of 600 gallons a minutes before a 10-foot section was repaired three hours later. Village officials say the work ought to

start up in early September, just after Labor Day. Construction likely will continue into November, said Village Engineer John Fitzgerald. Plans are still being reviewed by the Illinois Department of Transportation, which needs to issue a permit for the village to work within its rights-of-way both on First Avenue and Cermak Road. According to Fitzgerald, traffic will be reduced to one lane along southbound First Avenue at Cermak Road during the project, and the right-turn lane from eastbound Cermak Road to southbound First Avenue will be shut down throughout the construction period. Fitzgerald said the plan calls for the southernmost through-traffic lane on Cermak Road to temporarily serve as a right-turn only lane during the project. There will also be impact to eastbound traffic along Cermak Road during daytime construction hours, Fitzgerald said. The southernmost lane of traffic will be closed while daytime work is happening. “It’ll be back open for rush hour,” said

Fitzgerald. The existing 8-inch water main, which runs under Cermak Road, will be disconnected from the main supply, capped and abandoned in place. The new 12-inch water main will be located beneath the south parkway (and under the sidewalk between First Avenue and 2nd Avenue), which will require the excavation and then replacement of the parkways and sidewalks between First Avenue and 5th Avenue. That means a definite impact to pedestrians, though vehicles will still be able to access residences and businesses on that stretch of Cermak Road. “We’re used to designing projects for these kinds of issues to minimize the impact for everybody,” Fitzgerald said. There will be intermittent water shutoffs to business and residences, but those affected will be notified in advance of the shutoffs, which should last only a couple of hours at a time. “There will be minimal water service shutdowns,” Fitzgerald said, “when we make connections.”

For anyone, hearing you’ve been diagnosed with cancer is a hard truth to accept. No matter what stage of disease people are diagnosed with, stories are often shared about cancer patients trying to stay positive and do their best to live life uninterrupted. So, in July 2014, when Riverside resident Bart Richards was told he had Stage III colon cancer, the last thing that came to mind was giving up hope. The first thing? Physically and mentally doing everything he could to beat his cancer. A few months following his diagnosis, Richards had surgery to remove nearly a foot of his colon, starting chemotherapy soon after. “Chemotherapy was one of the hardest processes I’ve ever been through,” Richards said. “It takes every bit of energy and mental toughness to show up for your chemo session.” Following six months and 12 rounds of chemotherapy, Richards started his road to recovery, with exercise playing a huge role in the task. After learning he was cancer-free, Richards felt the time was right to put all of his energy towards a new yet familiar goal — pushing his body towards a great goal. While Richards had always been an athletic guy as a runner and rower, he was unsure at first about a new athletic feat to tackle. He had done several triathlons as an adult, but racing was certainly not the first thing that came to mind. However, following a discussion with a friend, Richards figured the timing was perfect to push his body to its limits — again. Thus, he began training for the 2016 Chicago Triathlon. “With a friend of mine, we were sitting back having beers at a bar and he said, ‘Why don’t we do this?’” Richards said. “So, we did it. It was a little bit of a challenge, but I had done it before and thought it would be a fun experience.” As a part of his triathlon participation last year, Richards was encouraged by a friend to use his story of fighting cancer to fundraise towards a medical cause in conjunction with training. With a team, Richards helped raise $10,000 for Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, with money raised by donations going towards the opening of a new infusion center for cancer patients. Following a successful race last year, Richards decided to go for round two and compete

again this year. To prepare, Richards’ schedule consisted of biking on weekends, swimming at Berwyn’s Pav YMCA and the Riverside Swim Club, and exercising on family trips to his family’s cottage in Michigan. “I like to push myself, and it gives me something to strive for outside of work and gives me something to put my energy towards,” Richards said about what motivates him for triathlon preparation. At this year’s event held last weekend in downtown Chicago, Richards and his team finished 21st out of 93 teams in the relay competition with a time of 2:34:27. When asked about the importance of remaining active following a health crisis, Richards said there is nothing difficult about upping the ante on something he already loves to do. “I’m lucky because I enjoy the aerobic exercises, so I don’t mind,” he said. “Some

people just hate running, for instance. I don’t mind the swimming, getting into a pool and doing laps. There’s just something about exercise that I enjoy. [Also] the challenge is nice because it’s the different disciplines with the biking, the swimming and the running, and that’s a little more attractive to me than just running a marathon.” And, as for life after cancer? “Every day is a bit of a struggle,” he said. “You have to get regular checkups and that’s always a little nerve-wracking, so it can be a challenge.” Richards, a Riverside resident since 2008, is married to Shelley and has two children, Joshua, 15, and Kendall, 12. When he is not training, he can be found spending time with his family, working as a management consultant with Claro Healthcare, a healthcare performance service corporation, and volunteering at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.

The Riverside-Brookfield High School District 208 Board of Education on Sept. 12 likely will decide whether to issue $5 million in new bonds. Superintendent Kevin Skinkis has recommended that the board sell $2 million in lifesafety bonds to fund physical plant upgrades at the school over the next seven years and to also consider whether to sell $3 million in working cash bonds to take advantage of low interest rates. The school board may also choose to take advantage of low interest rates to refinance bonds issued for the 2006 building renovation/expansion project. Because of the savings for refinancing the existing bonds, the cost for issuing the working cash bonds would be minimal compared to what taxpayers are paying now, officials said. On Aug. 8, the school district’s financial advisor presented a variety of alternatives for the board to consider. If the district refinanced the 2006 bonds without issuing any new bonds, the owner of a home worth $350,000 would save about $36 annually in property tax payments over the next seven years, according the financial projections presented at the board meeting. If the district refinanced the 2006 bonds and issued $2 million in life-safety bonds, the owner of a home worth $350,000 would

pay an additional $2 in property taxes for the next seven years, before experiencing a savings of $36 per year for three years. If the district issued $3 million in 10-year tax-exempt working cash bonds along with $2 million in life-safety bonds, the owner of a home worth $350,000 would pay an additional $34 a year in property taxes for the next 10 years. The proceeds of tax-exempt working cash bonds can only be used for capital expenses. The school board could instead issue taxable working cash bonds, the proceeds of which can be used for any purpose, instead of tax exempt bonds. Taxable bonds carry a higher interest rate to attract investors and would cost taxpayers more to pay off. Any plan to issue working cash bonds would be subject to a so called back-door referendum. If 10 percent of the registered voters in District 208, or about 2,000, signed petitions, they could force a referendum at the next election to vote on whether the working cash bonds should be issued. If the necessary number of signatures are not gathered, the bond issue would go forward without a referendum. Although District 208 currently has healthy reserves of about 45 percent of annual operating expenditures, Skinkis said that selling working cash bonds would give the district more financial flexibility to the take advantage of any opportunities for land acquisition that might arise and to deal with uncertainties about state funding.

North Riverside approves funding for road work In 2016, North Riverside undertook a largescale road improvement campaign, spending about $2 million to resurface or patch about 50 blocks throughout the village. A year later, the village will mount a much more modest road improvement program this fall. On Aug. 14, the North Riverside Village Board passed a resolution authorizing the use of $175,000 in motor fuel tax revenues for the work, which will take place over a four to six week period in October and November, according to Village Engineer John Fitzgerald. Two streets are scheduled for full resurfacing: 24th Street between 5th and 8th avenues and the entire length of Country Club Lane. Small sections of failed curb and gutter may

also be replaced and repairs will be made to any deteriorated drainage structures. In addition, said Fitzgerald said, smaller sections of road at locations scattered throughout the village will receive surface patching. Streets will remain open to traffic during construction, with closures limited to days when asphalt is being applied. Because the work involved motor fuel tax revenues, plans for the project have been submitted to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The village will seek bids for the project in September, with work starting sometime in October, Fitzgerald said. — Bob Uphues

Rain garden grows at Kiwanis Park thanks to Eagle Scout Brookfield’s Graham lives near park

By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

A Boy Scout has planted a rain garden at Kiwanis Park in Brookfield as his Eagle Scout project. Luke Graham, 17 and a senior at Riverside Brookfield High School, lives on Washington Avenue just north of the park. He conceived of the idea to build a small rain garden in the eastern part of Kiwanis Park a little bit south of the Oak Savanna. The area is low lying and water often covered the pathway. The standing water that would accumulate was also a breeding ground for mosquitos. Graham turned to his former next-door neighbor Jeff Swano for help. Swano, who owns the landscaping company Dig Right In, lived

in Brookfield for 20 years until moving to Oak Park about a year ago. He is a former chairman of Brookfield’s Conservation Commission. Swano advised Graham about how to build the rain garden and how to deal with village officials. “He helped us out a lot,” said Graham, a member of Boy Scout Troop 111 based at St. Louise de Marillac School in LaGrange Park. On July 30 15 people, eight Boy Scouts and seven adults planted the rain garden. Dig Right In supplied a Rototiller and Sod Cutter for free. They dug up the grass and planted a variety of plants that absorb water including swamp milkweed, beebalm, Golden Alexander, Black-eyed Susan, and sensitive fern. Graham was happy with the result. “It looks good and it prevents mos-

quitos,” Graham said. Graham said the plants and other costs associated with building the rain garden totaled $584. “I’m just asking for donations from my church and people are giving a lot,” Graham said. “My family gave some, other scouts donate

a little bit. It wasn’t as much as we thought so we didn’t have to do anything too big.” Nick Greifer, director of community and economic development for Brookfield worked with Graham and Swano on the project. “They did a great job in conceiving the project and then just delivering on it,” Greifer said. “It certainly has a positive impact on the park. It’s already a well utilized park but this just helps make it more useful to the community.” The village will water the plants for about six weeks. After that they

should survive just with normal rainfall. The deer in the area have been foraging but, aside from one plant species has been mostly leaving the rain garden alone. An Eagle Scout project must be completed before a Boy Scout turns 18 and leaves the Boy Scouts. Graham has completed his project with eight months to spare. He doesn’t turn 18 until April. “It feels great,” Graham said of completing the project. “All I have to do now is complete the paperwork and hand it in to them.”

D103 board impressed with new finance chief $800 surplus in tentative budget

By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

New Lyons School District 103 business manager Sherry Whitaker is projecting a budget surplus of about $800,000 for the 201718 fiscal year. Whitaker presented her tentative budget at special meeting of the District 103 school board held last Thursday evening at the district’s Administration Building. Initially Whitaker’s tentative budget projected a nearly $1.37 million surplus, but she said she just received word that the Illinois Department of Revenue is projecting a nearly 24 percent decrease in revenue from Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax which she estimates will reduce revenue to the district by about $580,000. The school board voted 6-0 to accept the tentative budget which is now on display at the district office. The school board must approve a final budget by the end of September.

School board members praised the work of Whitaker who started her job at District 103 on July 1. “In my 10 years (on the school board) this is probably one of the best (budget presentations) we’ve had,” said board member Sharon Anderson. Board member Joanne Schaeffer agreed. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had a really good presentation,” Schaeffer said. Superintendent Carol Baker praised Whitaker for the work she put in preparing the budget. “Sherry has been working 14 hours a day to get this together,” Baker said. Baker replaced a part time business manager who was hired last year after former business manager Jacqui Parisi was put on leave for unexplained reasons. Parisi ultimately resigned after reaching a settlement with the district. The tentative budget assumes a one per-

cent increase in revenue from local property taxes and a 1.3 percent increase in interest income. The budget assumes total revenue of about $36 million with about 66 percent of that coming from local property taxes. Adding in other local funding the budget projects that 71 percent of the district’s revenue will come from property taxes and other local funding sources. The budget assumes that the district will receive about $9.4 million in state aid which would account for about 27 percent of the district’s revenues. The budget projects that the district will receive about $1.6 million in aid from the federal government which should account for about 2.3 percent of the district’s revenues. The budget projects that salaries and benefits will account for 74 percent of the district’s expenditures. Whitaker projects that overall salaries have increased by about two percent this year and that the cost of

employee benefits increased by about three percent. The district will pay about $300,000 more than last year on textbooks and other curriculum related expenses such as a new math curriculum for elementary school students. The district is spending $100,000 for new Chromebooks and is projecting a $75,000 increase in the cost of utilities. Fees to the Lyons Township Schools Treasurer’s office are projected to increase by 15 percent, or $20,000, due to the costs of the treasurer’s office lawsuit against Lyons Township High School. According to unaudited figures District 103 finished the 2016-17 school with an operating surplus of about $2.1 million. Whitaker is projecting that the district will have a fund balance of nearly $15 million as of June 30, 2018. “There is no issue with fund balances in this district,” Whitaker told the school board.

Quick response by R-B from page 1 cident was publicly disclosed. Social Studies teacher Jill Musil discovered the graffiti last year and spoke at the assembly. Musil was eventually not rehired sparking protests and outrage from many students. Administrators said that the decision not to rehire Musil had nothing to do with her speaking at the assembly. This year the administration moved much more quickly. On Aug. 21, the same day as the graffiti

SUSPENSION

D103 maintenance director suspended from page 1 tions of record keeping matters relating to asbestos. A source said that Grace wanted his attorney present when he was being questioned and that his attorney could not attend the meeting. The IDPH investigation began after a latenight remodeling project at the Administration Building that Grace was involved in resulted in so much dust being released that fire alarms went off. In a subsequent investigation a Cook County inspector wrote in a report that be believed Grace was not truthful when questioned about the incident. Baker and the school district’s lawyer were not saying much Monday night at a school board meeting. “He has been suspended with pay pending an investigation,” Baker said. “That’s all I can say right now.” The lawyer declined to comment when asked whether Grace had been asked to meet with her. Baker declined to comment about what Grace was being investigated for and declined to estimate how long the investigation would take.

was discovered, RBHS Principal Kristin Smetana sent an email to RBHS parents stating that racist graffiti was found in a girls’ bathroom. “Displays of racism of any kind will not be tolerated and we are committed to providing additional learning opportunities for our students,” Smetana wrote. “While we cannot share additional information about the ongoing investigation, please note that any student found to be defacing property will be disciplined accordingly.” Smetana also urged students not to share photos of the graffiti on social media and not to ignore it. “Students who choose to ignore the graffiti or post pictures of it on social media do not help solve the problem and hinder the ad-

ministration’s investigation of the incident,” Smetana wrote. “We urge students to report graffiti and any racist acts, immediately, to the Deans of Students, Assistant Principal of Student Affairs, or any Security team member. Students may also go online to report this behavior on the Anonymous Bullying Report on RB’s website.” The graffiti was also quickly removed by staff. The next day the school’s morning announcements mentioned the racist graffiti and stated that discrimination will not be tolerated at RBHS and said that the school was taking steps to find out who wrote the graffiti. In an email to the Landmark, Smetana outlined several steps, many developed after meetings with students last year, RBHS is tak-

ing to promote a more respectful and accepting culture at RBHS. These include holding a tolerance week, grade level assemblies to remind students of behavioral expectations and consequences for actions, creation of a Student Advisory Board to receive feedback from students, joining the Hate has No Home Here movement by hanging signs around the building, holding monthly meetings with student leaders of clubs and activities to receive feedback on culture and climate at RBHS, creating a peer mediation group where student leaders will help to resolve conflicts between students, scheduling a social-emotional learning experience for students, and having the Association of Students for Tolerance hold monthly discussions on issues of tolerance and race.

“That is unknown at this time,” Baker said of the duration of the investigation. “Whenever there is an investigation sometimes you don’t know before you go into it how long it’s going to be.” Baker said that Grace was suspended with pay because of the way the law is written. “I think that’s part of school code,” Baker said. Grace has worked for District 103 since April 2016 when he was hired as maintenance director on an interim basis. He has been a controversial figure in the district. He is a close political ally of Lyons Village President Christopher Getty and served as a member of the Lyons Village Board from 2011 to 2013. He had been working as the Deputy Director of the Public Works Department for the Village of Lyons when he was hired by District 103. Over the past five years Grace has donated $1,000 to Getty’s campaign fund and another $950 to the United Citizens Party which backs Getty aligned candidates in Lyons village elections. Grace had the interim tag taken off his position a few months after he was hired. He was criticized this year during the school board election campaign by winning candidates Sharon Anderson, Marge Hubacek, and Shannon Johnson who have aligned with holdover board member Joanne Schaeffer to take control of the school board from a Getty backed majority that was elected in 2015. Grace actively campaigned in the school

board race putting up signs for the Getty backed candidates who were defeated. In June Grace was given a new one-year contract with an annual salary of $82,400 in a 4-2 vote with Johnson and Schaeffer voting no. Hubacek and Anderson voted to give Grace a new contract because his previous contract stated that he had to be notified by May 1 if he was not going to rehired. Grace has not appeared at a school board meeting since May 8. At the Aug. 14 school board meeting Grace did not appear at the meeting despite having a report from the maintenance director on the agenda. This angered some school board members. At the time Baker said that Grace just told her that he couldn’t make the meeting. Schaeffer and Johnson have been particularly vocal criticizing many of Grace’s actions including hiring a contractor to put down mulch at the schools. That work, they say, was done haphazardly and incorrectly without removing any weeds. They have also criticized the hiring of certain firms to do consulting or other work for the district. At Monday’s school board meeting the school board voted unanimously not to pay the company Juan Operations Service System $13,175 for the mulch project because there was no spraying or weed removal. “We want the superintendent to go back to Juan and tell him we’ll pay the bill, but we want them to do the job,” Hubacek said. The school board also voted 5 to 2, with

Coleen Shipbaugh joining Hubacek, Anderson, Johnson, Schaeffer to hold off paying a $20,873 bill submitted by the firm Renovation Associates for miscellaneous consulting work related to operations and maintenance. Board members say it is not clear exactly kind of work Renovation Associates did for the district and they want that clarified before paying the company. Renovation Associates has donated money to Getty and Getty backed candidates. Earlier this year Renovation Associates contributed $1,125 to Parents for Student Excellence, the campaign committee that backed the three unsuccessful Getty backed candidates in the District 103 school board race, a slate that included two incumbents. Renovation Associates also has contributed $2,775 to Citizens for Christopher Getty over the years and another $450 to the United Citizens Party. The company also has donated $13,425 to the campaign fund of Cook County Commissioner and McCook mayor Jeffrey Tobolski. The president and agent for the company, Simo Krneta personally contributed $500 last year to the campaign committee of former District 103 Human Resources Director Marty Stack who ran unsuccessfully for the Board of Tax Review last year. “It just seems like a little kickback going on,” Johnson said at the school board meeting. “This board has made it very clear that we do not want politics involved in our schools.”

Asleep at the wheel, foot on the brake

Riverside police arrested a 33-year-old Stickney man on Aug. 28 around 3 a.m. for driving under the influence after he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, which was southbound on Harlem Avenue near the Burlington Northern Railroad crossing, 3300 S. Harlem Ave. Officers, according to an Aug. 28 Riverside Police Department press release, noticed the “crossing gates were up and the train had cleared.” They watched two complete traffic cycles and the car did not move. When an officer approached the car, he saw “the driver’s head was slumped down on the steering wheel but the car was in gear and the engine was running with his foot on the brake.” The officer knocked on the window several times. The man did not wake up and the officer began to “pound and strike the window.” Eventually, the officer had to open the door and physically shake the man awake. In 2013, the same man had been arrested by Riverside officers who found him “completely passed out” behind the wheel of his car on the 100 block of Riverside Road.

enue and 26th Street in Riverside, told Riverside police a man and a woman came into the store around 2 a.m. on Aug. 24 wanting to buy two cases of Modelo beer, which cost about $46. The employee said he told the pair that alcohol sales weren’t allowed at that time and tried to block them from leaving the store. The woman reportedly “placed a 20-dollar bill on the counter” before leaving in a white BMW. The store employee gave the car’s license plate number to Riverside officers. ■ Three women reportedly took $20 worth of sandwiches from 7-11, 2600 S. Harlem Ave. in Riverside, on Aug. 21 around 3 p.m., according to a store employee. The three women did not display any weapons and, according to the employee, all “they did was take the sandwiches and run out the door.” There is video of the incident. The employee tried to get a license plate number of the womens’ black Pontiac parked outside but the car did not have plates.

■ A Metra conductor called Riverside police to 20 E. Quincy St. on Aug. 23 around 4:30 p.m., asking the officers to remove a woman from the train. The conductor reportedly asked the woman to put her shoes on. She had taken them off, which is against Metra rules. The women then reportedly asked the conductor, “Are you going to shoot me? ... Do you have a gun?” Officers asked the woman to step off the train, which then left the station. She told officers she didn’t feel safe and said she felt they were going to hurt her. She refused to give officers her name. She then boarded the next Metra train.

■ A 22-year-old Brookfield man called police to the 3500 block of Prairie Avenue on Aug. 21 around 1:45 a.m. saying there was an “unknown male subject in his backyard threatening to fight him.” Officers spotted the man, a 22-year-old Hodgkins resident, in the side yard, who said he had been upstairs drinking with the caller and another 21-yearold man. The caller denied this and said he didn’t know the 22-year-old and wanted him to leave. According to the police report, both “parties were observed to be highly intoxicated.” No arrest was made and at no point was there a physical confrontation.

Brotherly unlove Brookfield police came to a home on the 4600 block of DuBois in Brookfield around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 25 after a 25-year-old man called officers when his 29-year-old sibling reportedly shoved him and “grabbed him by the neck.” The brothers then “wrestled” on the basement floor before their mother called from upstairs to stop fighting. The younger brother then called the police. The older brother said his younger brother “instigated the argument.” “Due to conflicting accounts of what occurred, the lack of witness testimony, and both subjects’ willingness to stay apart,” no arrest was made.

Mistaken Brawl

A 50-year-old Brookfield woman called the police after she saw four men fighting at the corner of Shields Avenue and Raymond Avenue in Brookfield around 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 24. Police came and saw four men on the parkway. The group, who are reportedly all friends, told officers they had been at a golf outing earlier in Cicero and had come back to one of the men’s father’s house to drink. The group eventually began “horse playing and wrestling.” Officers warned the men to “not engage in disruptive behavior or public drinking of alcohol.”

Driving diabetic-ly A 58-year-old Burbank man was stopped, Aug. 21 around 8 a.m., near the intersection of Shields and Eberly Avenue after he was observed “driving erratically” and ignoring traffic controls. Officers, according to the police report, saw the driver’s “glassy eyes and heard him “slurring his speech heavily.” The man told officers he was a diabetic. After giving the man “medication” from an ambulance that arrived on scene, his speech returned to normal. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Aug. 21-27, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Declaring on racism It’s tough saying goodbye to next door friends

T

here is opportunity when racism declares itself. And for the second time in one year, RiversideBrookfield High School has been presented that opportunity after racist graffiti was again found in a bathroom on campus. Same bathroom and possibly the same perpetrator, according to the school. But after more or less muffing the response last time, school administrators were active last week in offering transparency and speed in acknowledging the incident. A year ago, it took the school six days to publicly disclose the graffiti. This year, parents received a same-day email from Principal Kristin Smetana explaining the discovery and, more importantly, making clear the school’s intolerance of racism and its determination to rally students to speak out against it. “Displays of racism of any kind will not be tolerated and we are committed to providing additional opportunities for our students,” she wrote. Before the week was out, students gathered with Assistant Principal Dave Mannon to talk about the racist display and a range of possible responses. An article in The Clarion, the RB newspaper, laid out the thoughts of students, which ranged from a Hate Has No Home Here sign campaign to celebrating the International Day of Tolerance in November. Mannon said that expanding cultural awareness was already a key goal at RB this year. “The focus this year is increasing our cultural awareness in this building. … We are absolutely not going down the same road we went down last year. … We are going to jump out in front of this thing this year and be really vocal and transparent about it.” At a moment in American life where the president touts equivalency between white supremacists and those rightminded people opposing them, it can hardly be a surprise that we’re back to pathetic people scrawling on bathroom walls. This is America. This is Brookfield. This is Riverside. And not for a moment can this behavior be tolerated or normalized.

Use water, pay for water In this week’s Landmark we report on an ambitious, overdue, and certainly traffic-snarling water infrastructure fix coming soon to Cermak Road. Undertaken by North Riverside, the laying of new water pipe to replace smaller, 70- to 80-year-old pipe is clearly essential. There aren’t many more basic local taxpayer expectations than free-flowing water service. The multiyear project reported this week, though, is made possible by the government action taken last week by an almost unanimous village board. After years of timidity about raising any property tax or fee, North Riverside has finally come to understand that not increasing revenues has dire consequences in an aging town. So, yes, it will be bitter as water and sewer rates rise starting in September. The alternative? Broken pipes and failure to govern.

Y

ou may refer to them as the people next door, our next door neighbors, or our friends who live next door. We refer to Adrienne and Jeff Nichols as our friends who happen to live next to us on Selborne. So when the call came from our friends to say they were moving, it was sad. We knew it had nothing to do with us. They felt it was time to “downsize.” When Jeff and Adrienne moved from Oak Park 14 years ago, an instant friendship was forged. We enjoyed talking over the bushes, or sitting on the bench in front of their house with Adrienne as we shared many thoughts, good and bad. It was fun to bring them pastries, a holiday tradition. Zeppoles, aka St. Joseph’s cakes, were a big hit. Sharing ears of corn when a dozen ears were certainly too much for the two of us. Joe’s ribs? Jeff was always ready to have some. Adrienne Nichols was the outdoor girl and when she would be out in her yard with her hands on her hips, we knew she was thinking of some project, which one year came to be a fountain. Her plantings have led to a picturesque backyard that we have been able to enjoy.

We were happy to share the hosta plants, which now have grown quite large between our houses. Jeff was the chef who unpacked the trunk of his car after shopping excursions. He is also an ordained minister, and many times he would be in working on his sermon, which was given at various places. While we never heard one of them, we can only feel it would be good. Together they enjoyed tea, going to plays, going out to dinner, particularly in Riverside, Aunt Diana’s candy, and visiting their family, both in the Chicago area and out of the area. We would watch each other’s houses and check on each other because that’s not just what neighbors do, it’s what good friends do. They had hoped to stay in Riverside, but it didn’t work out. However, as we well know, one never completely leaves Riverside. Our friendship will continue as they start another chapter in their lives just a bit west of here. When we look over at their house, we will have many pleasant memories of our good friends who lived next store.

Those three players assumed lead roles in spoiling Morton’s Friday home opener with a 33-0 win in Berwyn. RBHS scored a touchdown on its first four possessions to build a commanding 27-0 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs had a 9-play, 57-yard drive on their first possession, setting the tone for a lopsided first half. Hughes threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Giminski which opened the scoring barrage midway through the first quarter. Hughes collaborated with Giminski again on a short screen pass that the latter transformed into a spectacular 51-yard touchdown as he eluded several defenders down the right sideline to extend the lead to 13-0 at 2:41 of the first quarter. Giminski finished with eight catches for 108 yards. He also had the lone interception of the game. Del Nodal joined the fun with a 7-yard scamper into the end zone to build the Bulldogs’ lead to 20-0 with 9:56 remaining in the second quarter. Set up by Zach Vaia’s 46-yard punt return, Del Nodal scored again on a 4-yard run to make the score 27-0 midway through the second quarter. Del Nodal rushed 17 times for 120 yards. “Coming into the season, we knew what Nic is capable of on offense,” Curtin said. “It was just a matter of time before he found his groove.” Wide receivers Jake Vaia and Zachary Vaia, tight end Elliot Royer and running back Joey Quarino also made some plays offensively for the diversified RBHS attack. “Each guy did some pretty good things but everything started up front with our offensive linemen,” Curtin said. “The line did a good job of opening holes for Nic and giving Hunter Hughes adequate passing time.” The Bulldogs’ offensive line, consisting of Josh Ricchio,

Seth Keeling, Riley Shaw, Darian Dorantes and Jeremy Warren, controlled the line of scrimmage, which allowed the team’s playmakers plenty of opportunity to gain huge chunks of yardage. After a scoreless third quarter, the Bulldogs tacked on a touchdown with 7:44 left in regulation when Hughes (17-for23, 170 yards) tossed a 14-yard pass to wide receiver Devin Moody (4 receptions) as the finishing touch to an impressive 33-0 victory. Defensively, the Bulldogs looked even better, courtesy of a gang-tackling approach to shut down Morton running back David Wilson and quarterback Fabian Lopez. Jeff Bills, Dominick Rowe, Vaughn Hilpp, Anthony Walsh, James Mizura and Quarino anchored a stingy defense, which denied the Mustangs any first downs in the first half. For the game, Morton had 21 carries for four yards. “Getting a shutout in Week 1 is obviously a great thing,”

Curtin said. “Our players did a great job in terms of carrying out the game plan, which was to put the best tackling team on the field. The kids really rallied to the ball and did a good job in that regard.” RBHS (1-0) takes on host Wauconda (0-1) Friday, Sept. 1 at 7:15 p.m. Also named the Bulldogs, Wauconda is vying for a third straight postseason appearance this season. The team features senior quarterback Andrew Saccameno, twin brothers/tight ends Andrew and Matthew Nolan and running back Andry Nevski (missed last season with a torn ACL.). Sonny Piccolo, Chris Ochoa and Cameron Francis offer depth at the running back position. Richmond-Burton defeated Wauconda 27-14 in Week 1 of the high school football season. “Wauconda is always a well-coached team,” Curtin said. “Factor in the hour-and-a-half drive up north and it’s going to be a long day for our kids. We are looking forward to the challenge, however, and we’ve had some good battles against Wauconda in recent years.”

In recent years, our seniors have taken mental notes what it should look like and how it should be if you’re a part of RBHS football.” Class of 2016 players Ryan Swift, Dean Zigulich and David Pribyl Pierdinock set the standard. The senior captains powered RBHS to an 11-2 record and the aforementioned quarterfinals appearance in the postseason. “That senior class and I came in at the same time. They bought into what we were doing,” Curtin said. “They bought in so much that they sold it to others; they sold it to guys younger than them.” While having team chemistry is wonderful, let’s face it — talent wins games. For the fourth straight year, RBHS appears to have a plethora of playmakers poised to keep the team on track. Quarterback Hunter Hughes, running back Nicolas Del Nodal, and wide receiver Stefan Giminski are fast, elusive and highly entertaining in the open field. The Bulldogs’ offensive line looked terrific and the defense dominant against Morton. We don’t take anything for granted as a program. “I enjoy working with the boys every day. Our coaches try to instill in the players a positive culture and behavior. But at the end of the day, our seniors must lead the way.” RBHS has its home opener against Ridgewood on Friday, Sept. 8 (7:15 p.m.) at the Kennelly Athletic Complex. Reminiscent of Curtin’s home debut in 2012, the atmosphere will be fun, festive and alive, with the Bulldogs celebrating Senior Night. If the Puppettes are taking requests, how about an encore of Owl City and Carly Rae? Good times have truly arrived for the Bulldogs.

Lions top Sandburg

Nazareth, Fenwick football teams eager for action after forfeit win in opener BY MARTY FARMER Lyons Township senior quarterback Ben Bryant appeared as good as advertised in the Lions’ 33-22 win against Sandburg on Friday, Aug. 25 in Willow Springs. Regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the state, the Cincinnati-bound Bryant completed 21 of 30 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns. Bryant threw a pair of TD passes to senior Nathan Rusk (5, 50 yards), with Bryce Moskiewicz and Louis Banda adding a touchdown reception apiece to push LTHS out to a 27-7 halftime advantage. The Lions host Hinsdale South on Friday, Sept. 1 in a West Suburban Conference crossover game. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Bennett Field.

While many challenges remain on the schedule for both teams, the Roadrunners and Friars didn’t even break a sweat (literally) as Dunbar and Bowen each took a forfeit loss against Nazareth and Fenwick, respectively. The Roadrunners face visiting De La Salle Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Nazareth will be holding its Senior Night at Valenta Stadium. While the Meteors should provide a good test for Nazareth, the latter is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. Quarterbacks Zach Stevens and Bobby Grimes are both capable of leading the Roadrunners to success. Dual-threat running back/wide receiver David Oglesby and a strong offensive line also make the Roadrunners formidable. Seniors Isaiah Lee and Austin Reifsteck lead Nazareth’s defense.

Friars meet Moline

The Nazareth Academy and Fenwick High School football teams should win plenty of games and contend in their respective conferences this season.

Fenwick (1-0) faces visiting Moline on Friday, Sept. 1 at Triton College. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. The Friars hope to remain undefeated

LTHS senior quarterback Ben Bryant threw four touchdown passes in the first half of a 33-22 win against Sandburg on Friday, Aug. 25. after Friday’s game, particularly with an early showdown looming against Montini on Friday, Sept. 8 in Lombard. Offensively, the Friars are led by allstate wide receiver Michael O’Laughlin and offensive lineman Austin Glazier

(committed to Fordham). Quarterbacks George Lagios and Danny Cronin, along with running back Jason Ivery, look to fill the void left by Jacob Keller and Conner Lillig, who are playing college football at Northern Iowa and Illinois, respectively.
