For its owner, Galloping Ghost not just an arcade, but a way of life

By BOB UPHUES Editor

oc Mack, the owner of Galloping Ghost Arcade, 9415 Ogden Ave. in Brookfield, was working on a game cabinet one Saturday in May 2015 when an employee burst in, horrified at what he’d just done. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry,” the employee told Mack. “What did you do?” “I just charged Toru Iwatani to come into the arcade. I didn’t know who he was!” Most people might not know who Iwatani is. But, if you’re Doc Mack, you’d know that it was the video arcade version of Babe Ruth knocking on your door and asking to look at your baseball card collection. Toru Iwatani is the creator of the iconic arcade game Pac-Man. He’d flown into Chicago from Japan for a 35th See GALLOPING GHOST on page 10

Riverside board passes diversity resolution, barely Three trustees abstain from voting on inclusion statement

The Riverside Village Board on Sept. 21 voted to affirm the village is a place that sup-

ports diversity and inclusion. By the barest of margins. Officially, the 257-word resolution passed without dissent, but only trustees Doug Pollock, Joseph Ballerine and Elizabeth Peters –

one short of a majority – voted affirmatively for the resolution. Trustees Wendell Jisa, Scott Lumsden and Michael Sedivy abstained. But, according to Village Attorney Lance Malina, absent a

conflict, Illinois law calls for counting abstentions with the prevailing side. Village President Ben Sells, said he See DIVERSITY on page 15

JUST DUCKY Brookfielders braved 90 degree heat on Sept. 23 to attend the Brookfield Fine Arts Fest and Beautify Brookfield’s annual duck race fundraiser in and around Kiwanis Park. Once again the sidewalk chalk art competition (top) was a big draw, but so was the art itself. Middle left, Teresa Swanson has a look at some of the jewelry on display from Julie Marie Jewelry. The duck race (middle right), featuring about 750 rubber ducks dumped into Salt Creek at Washington Avenue and floating to the canoe launch finish line, raised $3,000. More artifacts found at Riverside work site Button, nail, stone tool also found in trench where bones were unearthed By BOB UPHUES Editor

A week after a sewer construction crew unearthed skeletal remains underneath a Riverside street, archaeologists from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uncovered other artifacts that may or may not be related to the human bones found there on Sept. 14. Brant Vollman was one of two Army Corps archaeologists who visited Riverside on Sept. 21 to inspect a construction trench dug in the 100 block of Bloomingbank Road as part of the First Division storm sewer separation project. “It was a unique opportunity,” said Vollman, who works out of the Army Corps’ Rock Island office. He and an intern investigated the trench, which was along the curb line of the street, not only to see if they could recover more remains or other items related to them, but to see if there were signs that the crew might have stumbled onto a more extensive burial site. After sifting through the sandy earth inside the trench, the archaeologists came away with a small four-hole button, a “possible” metal nail and a likely prehistoric flake of stone that Vollman described as something that resulted from making a stone tool. “Are they associated with the burial?” asked Vollman “I don’t know.” The additional artifacts were turned over to the Cook County Medical Examiner, which was already in possession of the human

The discovery of human remains halted work on the new sewer line until the Army Corps’ archaeologists could investigate the site. Cameras to be replaced at Village Commons The North Riverside Village Board on Sept. 18 voted unanimously to award a $39,000 contract to Forest Park-based Illinois Alarm to install new surveillance cameras in Village Commons Park and near other municipal buildings that are part of the Commons complex. While cameras have been in place for years, the new ones are high-definition cameras that will mesh with the Bosch Divar 5000 hardware installed during the 2016-17 fiscal year after the prior unit, installed about a decade ago, ceased functioning. The upgrade calls for seven high-definition outdoor cameras in Village Commons

Park, including two cameras that can be programmed to move in order to scan areas of the park. In addition, 18 high-definition cameras will be placed inside municipal buildings, such as the police department and North Riverside Village Commons. North Riverside Police Chief Lane Niemann said the cameras have been useful in identifying people who have vandalized the park in recent years, adding that knowing the cameras are around may also help deter wrongdoing. “We’ve had several minor incidents where we’ve been able to identify kids involved in a few incidents of vandalism,”

Niemann said. “If they know the cameras are there, maybe people will think twice about doing something in our parks.” Niemann said the new equipment is slated to be installed this fall. “I want to get it done in the next couple of weeks; the next month for sure,” Niemann said. The North Riverside Village Board earmarked $40,000 for the camera replacement project in its 2017-18 budget. The village received three proposals for the cameras, with Illinois Alarm the low bidder. The other bids came in above budget, between $43,000 and $45,000. — Bob Uphues

Last week as the Riverside Elementary School District 96 Board of Education unanimously approved a budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year that projects a surplus of $351,430 for the current fiscal year, some school board members expressed concerns about the fiscal trajectory of the district. The $351,430 surplus this year is a steep reduction from the budget surpluses the district has run in the past few years. Last year, the district finished the year with an unaudited budget surplus of nearly $2.4 million. The year before, the district ran a surplus of just over $1.8 million. “I’m very concerned about the trajectory we’re on,” said Jeff Miller, the president of the District 96 Board of Education. Miller said if costs continue to increase as they have in recent years, the district could soon be deficit spending. District 96 continues to be in a very strong financial position and is projected to end the 2017-18 school year with reserves of nearly $29 million, which is more than the almost $27 million the district plans to spend this year on operations. The district’s revenues, 87 percent of which come from local property taxes, re essentially flat this year, increasing mained by just under $105,000. That was because the district, like all school districts in Cook County, can only increase its tax levy by the rate of increase in inflation or 5 percent, whichever is less. The Consumer Price Index, which governs the tax levy, increased by only 0.7 percent. Next year the district will be able to increase its tax levy by 2.1 percent. Salaries and benefits, which are the major costs for any school district, increased faster than revenues. Most teachers in the district received raises of 1 percent in base pay for this year, the minimum raise allowed for in the teachers’ contract which expires next year. Teachers also advance a lane on the salary schedule each year, which boosts their salaries. The 16 experienced teachers who are off the salary schedule received raises of 2.25 percent this year. The district is spending nearly $16.3 million this year on salaries compared to just over $15.4 million last year. Salaries and benefits account for 80 percent of the district’s expenses, according to Rob Holmes, the district’s director of finance and operations. District 96 also spent heavily to imple-

ment a new English, Language Arts (ELA) curriculum. The cost of new ELA curriculum, including materials and training, amounted to just under $368,000. The district also is spending nearly $40,000 more than last year on new workbooks to accompany a new elementary school math curriculum introduced last year. Combined, the district is spending nearly $700,000 more this year than last year on curriculum supplies and purchased services. The new ELA costs are mostly a one-time expenditure and the costs of supplies and purchased services are projected to decrease by nearly $300,000 next year, Homes said. “We didn’t have, necessarily, the infrastructure of staff that was needed,” said board member Shari Klyber. “But I think it’s time that we really consider where we place people and when and how, because that staffing is vital, but it’s extremely expensive. We need to think about class sizes.” Expenses increased by nearly 8 percent this year as the district is projecting operating expenses of nearly $27 million this year compared to expenses of nearly $24.9 last year. Not all school board members were so concerned about the shrinking budget surplus. “Some of the surpluses in the past were a bit excessive for a public bodily to continually get,” said board member Lynda Murphy. “For me, ideally, we would be taking in what we spend.” Murphy and board member David Barsotti said that they would not be uncomfortable with occasionally running operating deficits. “I don’t necessarily think deficit spending is bad,” Barsotti said. “The trajectory is what’s concerning. … There were some significant changes made in the last couple of years which caused us to increase spending. I’m not raising the alarm bells yet.” The school board will face some substantial capital costs in upcoming years as it seeks to improve its playgrounds and decides what to do with the land next to Ames School, which it purchased last year. “This board hasn’t even talked about how we’re going to pay for that yet,” said Rich Regan, the chairman of the board’s finance committee. “We have no idea yet, because we don’t know what the scope of the project is yet. When you have those unknowns, you preserve the reserves as best as you can.”

D103 maintenance chief requests board hearing On paid leave, Grace will appear before officials in October

By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

Two school board members have told the Landmark that Lyons School District 103 Maintenance Director Ryan Grace has requested a hearing before the school board. Grace was suspended with pay in late August, and the district apparently is trying to fire him. There was an item on the agenda of the school board’s Sept. 11 meeting, regarding the superintendent’s recommendation to accept a separation agreement between the district and an unnamed administrator, who is believed to be Grace. But, no action was taken on the item, and the matter was not even discussed in public except to say that it wouldn’t be considered at the meeting. Neither Superintendent Carol Baker nor school board President Marge Hubacek wanted to say much about the matter,

though Hubacek confirmed that a hearing would be held. Grace, like other administrators in District 102, has a provision in his contract that gives him the right to a hearing before the school board before he can be terminated for cause. Grace reportedly was placed on paid administrative leave after refusing to answer questions from the district’s attorney, apparently about a late-night remodeling project earlier this year at the district’s administration building. The work led to an investigation that resulted in the district agreeing to pay at least $5,000 in fines levied by the Illinois Department of Public Health for violations regarding training and record keeping related to asbestos. In June, the board voted 4 to 2 to give Grace, who was hired in 2016, a new oneSee HEARING on page 7

Riverside agrees to 5-year deal with police Committee will look at feasibility of shift schedule change

By BOB UPHUES Editor

For the first time ever, the village of Riverside and union police officers have agreed to a five-year contract. The contract was approved unanimously by village trustees as part of the omnibus agenda at the village board’s Sept. 21 meeting. Both sides have been working to hammer out an agreement since the previous four-year deal expired on Dec. 31, 2016. The main points of contention, said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel were the length of the contract, increases in base salary over the term of the deal and shift schedules. “One of the things I wanted and the village wanted was the five-year contract,” said Weitzel. A particularly important issue for both sides was shift scheduling. More and more, police unions are pushing for 12-hour shifts, which guarantees officers at least three days off each week. Riverside police officers work one of

three permanent eight-hour shifts, something Weitzel said he prefers. In exchange for this contract, said Weitzel, management and the union agreed to form a committee to look at alternative scheduling for the future to see if it can work for a small department like Riverside’s. “We didn’t shut the door and say no,” Weitzel said, “but we really need to research how this benefits the village. Twelve-hour shifts can work well in larger departments, but in departments under 25 officers it can become problematic.” Weitzel said with officers having three days off a week, it could be a challenge to fill out shifts when also factoring in vacation time, personal days, sick days and officers serving active-duty military tours. Presently, Riverside has one patrol officer serving in the U.S. Navy until August 2018. While shifts can be filled by officers working overtime, that solution can lead to burnout, said Weitzel. “In the end, we just came to an agreement to form a committee to research whether it

can be done,” Weitzel said. The new contract does provide base pay raises in each year of the deal. For the first three years of the contract, patrol officers and sergeants receive base pay raises of 2.5 percent. The base pay increases in years three and four to 2.75 percent. But patrol officers and sergeants also are eligible for step raises, which will increase their salaries at a rate greater than the base pay raise. For example, the starting salary for a patrol officer in Riverside is $68,938. With step raises after years one and two on the force, that same officer’s salary in 2019 would be $87,115, an increase of 26.3 percent. By the final year of the contract, a Riverside patrol officer who has been on the force for 7 years will make $101,419 in base pay. The entry-level salary for a sergeant in 2017 is $102,404. After two years, with a step raise, that sergeant’s salary would be $109,509, an increase of 7 percent. The top annual salary for a sergeant with at

least nine years at that rank in 2021 will be $120,686. Lieutenants and other command staff are not part of the union contract. Riverside’s salary schedule is more generous than many neighboring communities. The starting 2017 salary for a patrol officer in Brookfield, which is almost twice the size of Riverside, is $60,465. In North Riverside, a starting patrol officer in 2017 makes $57,563. “It’s a very competitive atmosphere out there,” said Weitzel, who said the village’s salary schedule and opportunities for training make Riverside attractive to officers who otherwise might want to work in larger communities. Other than salary increases and a promise to look at scheduling in the future, the new contract contains few changes. Officers still must contribute 15 percent toward their health insurance premiums, a figure agreed to in their previous contract. They also continue to get the same amount of vacation days and paid holidays.

North Riverside seeks to join special rec agency WSSRA board to vote on village’s membership in October

By BOB UPHUES Editor

After having a go at providing recreation services to those with special needs inhouse, the village of North Riverside will seek to join a special recreation association that already provides those services to residents of almost a dozen other communities. On Sept. 18, the North Riverside Village Board voted unanimously to approve the village membership in the West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA) to provide recreation programs and services to children and adults with special needs. North Riverside Recreation Director Theresa Mrozik will serve as the village’s representative to the WSSRA board of directors. The special recreation agency’s board is expected to approve the village’s application to join on Oct. 10. Once admitted to membership in the special recreation association, North Riverside will be able to extend program offerings after Jan. 1, 2018, which is the start of WSSRA’s fiscal year.

WSSRA also provides special recreation services to the following agencies: Berwyn Park District and North Berwyn Park District, the Park District of Forest Park, the Park District of Oak Park, River Forest Park District, the village Elmwood Park, the Hawthorn Clyde park districts in Cicero, the village of Harwood Heights, the Norridge Park District and the Park District of Franklin Park. The cost for operating the special recreation association is shared by all of its members, based on the total value of property within a member’s jurisdiction as a percentage of the whole. According to the membership agreement passed by the North Riverside Village Board last week, WSSRA will phase in the contribution the village must pay to be part of the agency. The agreement also states that the village is agreeing to a five-year commitment to WSSRA. In the first year of the contract, North Riverside will pay WSSRA $34,500, which is roughly half of the standard annual membership fee. In 2019, that contribution will

be $52,000, or about 75 percent of the standard fee. In the third year of the contract, North Riverside will begin to pay its full annual share to WSSRA, about $70,000, based on the 2018 calculation. North Riverside approached the Riverside Township Mental Health Board about potentially contributing funds in the form of a grant to the village for the purposes of paying a portion of the WSSRA member fee. That board tabled action on the subject at their meeting last week. Mrozik said the village will move forward with its wish to be part of WSSRA regardless. “We left it open,” said Mrozik of the talks between the village and mental health board. “Anything they felt they could consider we’d be open to. We’re still feeling things out, and I don’t think it’s going to move quickly.” North Riverside has been talking about ways to deliver recreation services to its special needs residents for years. In 2014, Mrozik formed North Riverside Special Recreation, an in-house program with a staff of

three to deliver a small number of offerings. “We had some very basic classes, like crafts and sports,” said Mrozik. “The biggest issue we ran up against was registration. We were running the program in the red just to run the classes. When you have one or two kids in a class, even the parents get discouraged.” Officials decided to shut down the inhouse special recreation program after about a year and a half. WSSRA offers a wide variety of programming for both children and adults, from sports, fitness classes and swimming lessons to excursions to parks, sporting events, restaurants and shopping centers. North Riverside also considered joining the South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation (SEASPAR). Brookfield has been a member of SEASPAR since 2007. However, many of SEASPAR’s programs are in far west and southwest suburbs, and Mrozik wanted programming closer to North Riverside. “We wanted to make it as convenient as possible,” Mrozik said.

HEARING from page 5 year contract, paying him $82,400. Grace, who is a political ally of Lyons Village President Christopher Getty, has been a controversial figure in the district since he was hired. He actively campaigned for two incumbents and another candidate backed by Getty. Those candidates were defeated in the April school board election, and a new board majority – one opposed to Getty’s influence in the school district -- swept to power. Hubacek and Sharon Anderson voted reluctantly to rehire Grace this summer say-

ing that the deadline not to renew him had pasted. Grace was involved in a verbal altercation with a parent and student in the district at an April board meeting, an incident that he ultimately apologized for in a written statement read at a school board meeting by Baker. Some board members also have questioned certain contracts approved by Grace for maintenance work at the district. Grace has not actually appeared at a school board meeting since May. His hearing before the school board, which will be held in closed session, is expected to be held on Oct. 17. “I don’t know if action will be taken at the day of the hearing or at a board meeting,” Hubacek said.

Brookfield paramedics transported a 44-year-old man to the hospital after finding him passed out on a blood-stained bed inside a “destroyed” room at the Pioneer Motel, 8835 Ogden Ave. on Sept. 19 at about 12:20 p.m. According to the police report, a motel employee told police that the man was supposed to check out of his room but wouldn’t answer his door when the employee knocked on it. The employee entered the room and found the man passed out on the bed and the room in “total disarray.” There were blood stains on the bed, walls and floor inside the room, the toilet was broken in half, several empty vodka bottles littered the floor and the man had cuts on his head and hands. Motel officials declined to press charges against the man, who was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn for treatment.

Gambler’s remorse Brookfield police responded to Brixie’s Saloon, 9526 Ogden Ave., on Sept. 23 at about 11:50 p.m. after an employee called to request that a patron be removed from the business. The patron, a 39-year-old Arlington Heights man, reportedly insisted he should be refunded all of the money he had fed into a video gambling machine that night. His voucher from the machine indicated he had just $1 remaining from the $60 he gambled. A bar employee contacted the video gambling machine vendor to confirm whether the amount on the voucher reflected the run of play on that machine. The company confirmed that abut $60 was played and all that remained to be refunded was $1. The bar patron left the bar, without incident, with $1.

Hit and run crash Brookfield police cited a 22-year-old Brookfield woman for crashing her vehicle into at least two others parked in the 4000 block of DuBois Boulevard sometime between 11 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. on Sept. 21. The offender reportedly fled the scene and there was apparently no eyewitness to the crash. However, the front license plate belonging to the offender’s vehicle was discovered at the scene, and a partial impression of the plate was stamped into the rear bumper of one of the parked cars. At about 9:25 p.m., the suspected hit-andrun driver walked into the police department to talk to officers. Police issued her citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle and improper lane usage.

Packages stolen A 33-year-old Brookfield woman contacted police to report that packages had been sto-

len from the lobby of her apartment building in the 9200 block of Monroe Avenue on both Sept. 15 and Sept. 20. The victim said she had emails from UPS confirming both deliveries; however, she never took possession of the packages, which contained jewelry valued at about $1,500.

More catalytic converter thefts ■ Brookfield police responded to the 9000 block of Fairview Avenue on Sept. 19 after being called by a resident who reported that sometime between 6 a.m. and 3:50 p.m. someone had cut off the catalytic converter of his vehicle, which was parked in front of his home. A nearby surveillance camera showed that a large light-colored SUV pulled up next to the victim’s vehicle at about 6:10 a.m. and was seen leaving about two minutes later. ■ A resident of the 3300 block of Park Avenue, Brookfield, reported to police on the morning of Sept. 21 that sometime during the overnight hours, someone had sawed the catalytic converter from the bottom of his vehicle, which was parked on the street.

Passed out at the wheel

Riverside police charged 46-year-old Giovanni Bonano with driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license and other offenses after he was found reportedly passed out behind the wheel of his 2006 Toyota, which was parked up on the curb in the 400 block of Longcommon Road on Sept. 24 at about 9:25 p.m. Bonano appeared incoherent, according to police, and told the arresting officer that he had been at the Chicago Bears game and a tavern in Cicero earlier that day. Asked how much he had to drink, Bonano reportedly told police, “Come on, man, I was at the Bears game. How much you think I had?” According to police, Bonano’s license had been revoked due to a prior drunken driving conviction. Police also reported finding an open can of beer in the center console of the vehicle and another open beer in the back seat area. The Cook County State’s Attorney approved a felony charged for driving while revoked, but did not approve a felony DUI charge sought by Riverside police. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Sept. 1824, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

GALLOPING GHOST Expanding from page 1 anniversary celebration of the release of the game at a Schaumburg arcade, and he bugged out of the event early to make a special trip to Brookfield. Mack went out into the arcade and there was Iwatani, accompanied by an interpreter and a couple of other people, taking photos. “He came over and told me, ‘It’s the best arcade I’ve ever been in,’” Mack said. “How humbling is that, to have the creator of PacMan say that? It’s unbelievable.” Since it opened in 2010, Galloping Ghost has expanded the number of classic arcade games it houses from the 130 it started with to more than 600. The business has already expanded west into the front half of the building next door to the original arcade and soon will expand even farther west, into the building at the corner of Ogden and Deyo. When that expansion is complete, Galloping Ghost will house about 800 games lined up side by side in long rows inside 12,000 square feet of Ogden Avenue commercial frontage. Last year, said Mack, Galloping Ghost Arcade drew 75,000 visitors from all over the world, including Japan, South Africa and England. They come from across the United

States, as well. “Literally, people come here from out of state every day,” Mack said. Hundreds of people a day might be found playing games in between the cramped, unbroken rows of wood cabinets, jammed side by side. The most people the arcade has welcomed in one day was 798, said Mack, all of them plunking down $20 to play as many games as they want, all day – which is from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. No alcohol is served or allowed in the arcade. The food is snacks from the front counter or from one of the nearby restaurants. People stay all day; sometimes, if they’ve planned a vacation around a visit to Galloping Ghost, all day for several days in a row. Apart from the Brookfield Zoo, which is the biggest tourist attraction in the state, Galloping Ghost may be the village’s biggest draw, with the possible exception of Irish Times, said Nicholas Greifer, the village director of community and economic development. Earlier this year, Greifer referred to both Galloping Ghost and Irish Times as “power draws” for Brookfield. “It may seem like the fly under the radar, but they have a very strong presence,” Greifer said. “We’ve been very glad to have them in our community, and he continues to invest in the business, so they’ll continue to stay strong and expand.” The video arcade itself is just part of Gal-

THE LANDMARK VIEW

To dare is to do

O

fficials in many suburban Chicago communities, particularly inner-ring suburbs with significant immigrant populations, debated and passed actual laws in the past year reaffirming their commitment to those residents but also stating upfront that local law enforcement would not cooperate with federal immigration authorities regarding detainer requests or non-judicial warrants and affirmed that people would not be stopped and detained because of their immigration status. Suburban school districts, as well, passed resolutions welcoming immigrant students who may or may not be undocumented, pledging to refrain from requiring any student or family show proof of immigration status, to bar federal immigration enforcement officers from school buildings without consent of the superintendent and other measures to ensure students feel safe inside school facilities. In other words, there are some municipalities that have actively sought to stand up particularly for undocumented children who may be in the country because their parents entered the country illegally. Judging from some of the tactics federal immigration officials have employed in the past year, we’d say those ordinances and resolutions are rooted in common human decency. So, it’s a little perplexing why it was such a challenge for members of the Riverside Village Board to pass the most basic of “inclusion” resolutions last week. We suppose there could have been an argument to be made against it, perhaps saying that it fell far short. In reality, the resolution’s main message was that everyone is welcome to visit Riverside, shop in its downtown, ride bikes through its winding streets and walk through its parks. Yet, three trustees abstained from voting to approve the resolution. The reasons varied, from the resolution being a frivolous waste of time to the resolution not being vetted by the village’s economic development commission to a headscratching bit of argument that boiled down to Riverside wasn’t welcoming enough to vote to affirm that the village ought to be more welcoming. The resolution, in part, was based on the village’s new focus on economic development and wanting to attract business owners and customers from out of town. So we suppose the economic development commission might have given this some sort of cursory glance before it got to the village board, but it seems hardly worth arguing over. As for the argument that the resolution wasn’t “actionable” and wasted time and resources, municipal boards pass non-actionable, time wasters all the time. There are proclamations declaring support for things like Arbor Day and National Library Week. Someone does a good deed and villages shell out a few bucks for a plaque and an oversized key. So, it’s seems odd that a village declaring a set of principles – “Hey, all are welcome to visit and shop in Riverside” – would face such a high bar. Of course, the point is moot. Three others voted in support and the village president, who wrote the resolution, would have been a fourth vote in favor if it were needed. So, Riverside is “inclusive,” if reluctantly, officially.

Yearbooks recall Riverside Woman’s Club

A

nother bit of history and memories came across my threshold by way of Judy Finn of Riverside. While going through the family’s home in Michigan, Judy Miller Finn, who was raised in Riverside, had come upon some yearbooks of the Riverside Woman’s Club, which belonged to her mother, Mary Miller. The oldest booklet dates back to 1967 and is done in the club’s colors mahogany and ecru -- that’s light beige for those who aren’t familiar with that term. The club is now defunct, but the list of the club members in 1967 was quite extensive and included active members, life members, honorary and courtesy members and nonresident members. It almost reads as a list of “who’s who” of Riverside women past and present. Organized in 1913, the Riverside Woman’s Club received its certification by the Secretary of State of Illinois on May 17, 1915. The club so organized that there was a committee for everything from hospitality to refreshments to house and decorating. The club also served as sponsors for the Riverside Junior Woman’s Charity; Mrs. Frank Heidler Jr. and Mrs. Joseph Juric of the Woman’s Club dutifully attended all meetings of Juniors. Interestingly, Woman’s Club members’ names were

listed according to their husbands’ first names, while the Juniors list included the members’ first name. Early by-laws of the club detail the qualifications for membership, the duties of officers and board of directors. Under Article IV “Dues,” it was stated that an initiation fee of $2 should accompany an application for membership and would be returned after being elected to the club after which the annual dues would be $7. Members could bring a guest to a meeting and pay 50 cents at the door. Meetings were held at the township hall at 1:30 p.m. and included a program and refreshments. The yearbook from 1959-60 from the collection had many notes penciled in, and I hope whomever was to bring the sheet cake for guest night on March 8, 1960 did so, as that responsibility was noted by Mary Miller. The books did bring back memories of my days as a Junior, where I held many positions, including president. I can still see Mrs. Heidler and Mrs. Juric attending the meetings, lending their advice when needed or not. I don’t know when the Riverside Woman’s Club ceased to be, but that was another time not known by many today. The Juniors, of course, continue to thrive as a club and are involved in many aspects of village life.

National Suicide Prevention Month

Coping with suicide is one of the most difficult situations we as a community will face. It raises a lot of strong feelings that can paralyze us. While none of us can prevent suicide 100% of the time, there are things we can do that can prevent suicide much of the time. Most attempts are preceded by warning signs. Knowing what these are, knowing your unique situation, and having your own crisis plan can help you be prepared.

RUNNING THE SPECTRUM

Students and parents turned out on Sept. 22 for the Blythe Park School Rainbow Run in Riverside, an event not so much about winning a race, but of gathering with friends and family. After running beneath an arch of colorful balloons, participants’ T-shirts were sprayed with a mix of food coloring and water, making them walking and running works of art. DIVERSITY

Spirit of inclusion from page 1 would have voted in favor of the resolution, which he admitted authoring, if it had come to needing a majority vote. Trustees who abstained from voting had different reasons for doing so. Sedivy said his understanding of the resolution was that it was related to economic development, based on the language of a memo introducing the resolution in the village board’s meeting packet. The memo states the resolution is a part of the village’s effort to “realize and expand on the economic development recommendations” of the village’s comprehensive plan. The resolution itself talks about creating “a beautiful environment that encourages civic interaction and social discourse among residents and visitors alike.” His abstention, which Sedivy technically never voiced, appeared based largely on the failure of the board to seek input from the Economic Development Commission on something related to the village’s economic development efforts. Lumsden said he didn’t believe the village board needed to pass such a resolution, because it wasn’t needed.

“I think it’s a waste of time, resources and assets to write resolutions like this that aren’t actionable,” Lumsden said. “I think our village is incredibly inclusive, and we have to, by law, by state, honor all diversification in business and employment.” He also questioned how much attorney and staff time went into preparing the resolution. Sells responded that no staff or attorney time was involved, since he wrote the resolution. Jisa’s reasoning for abstaining appeared counterintuitive, reaffirming his decision to not cast a vote on the resolution because he wanted Riverside to challenge itself to be more inclusive. “One of the reasons I wanted to join the board is because I didn’t feel like Riverside was an incredibly inclusive community,” said Jisa, who pointed out his wife is Hispanic. “People … that I have known for decades would say things around me, would do things around me, that offended me and would have offended my wife or my in-laws or my friends.” Jisa pointed to the reaction that resulted from the placement of a rainbow banner placed in Guthrie Park in June during Gay Pride as an example of how far Riverside had to go with respect to inclusion. “I want Riverside to be more inclusive,” Jisa said. “I think that as a community we have to challenge ourselves to be more accepting.” Sells, too, pointed to recent instances of

PHOTOS BY ALEXA ROGALS/Staff Photographer

racist graffiti being found in a bathroom at Riverside-Brookfield High School and of a swastika scrawled on the home being built for a non-white family as reasons why the resolution mattered. “I would like to think that we don’t have any diversity issues in this town,” Sells said. “If this is, what you say, something that we all agree with and know is true, then I find it hard to believe that we wouldn’t want to actually say to the broader world that Riverside is a place that honors diversity, that we want to be an inclusive community, that we welcome people to come here.”

The resolution that passed the board is fairly simple in its scope, one that “celebrates and encourages diversity and a spirit of inclusion among its residents and visitors.” It does not broach the subject of immigration, which other neighboring communities such as Oak Park, Forest Park, River Forest and Berwyn included in welcoming ordinances. Those laws, for example, specifically state that local authorities would not recognize immigration detainers or non-judicial detainer warrants issued by federal immigration authorities or detain anyone purely because of citizenship or immigration status.

Fenwick tops OPRF in pool

West-led Friars sweep relays; Huskies’ Ungaretti & Gill win two races apiece BY MARTY FARMER

ince 2008, the Fenwick High School girls swimming team has been one of the most successful programs in the state. During their stellar run, the Friars have posted seven Top 10 finishes, highlighted by runnerup results at the 2012 and 2011 state finals. With an impressive array of standout swimmers like Kelly Ryan, Maureen Barron, Haley Wickham, Mimi Schneider, Paulina Kaminski and Eric Scudder (all graduated), it’s apparent why Fenwick has been a perennial state contender. While crosstown rival Oak Park and River Forest can’t claim the same amount of cachet as the Friars in recent years, the Huskies had a historic season in 2016. The Huskies enjoyed their most successful state meet in nearly three decades, finishing fourth in the team standings and winning a pair of historic state championships last year OPRF’s 200-yard medley relay of Hanna Blankemeier, Alex Gill, Samm Neilson and Natalie Ungaretti became just the third relay team in program history to win a championship. Ungaretti also became only the third OPRF girl to win an individual title when she captured the 50-yard freestyle. Blankemeier and Gill won individual medals during a virtuoso performance that was the program’s best since 1989, when the Huskies won their second of back-to-back team state titles. OPRF visited Fenwick on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in the teams’ annual nonconference dual meet. The Friars enjoyed a clean

sweep of the Huskies, winning the varsity meet 115.50-70.50 and the junior varsity 118-65. “We definitely rose to the occasion to race,” Fenwick swimmer Brooke West said. “The dual meet against OPRF is always one of our favorite meets. The most amazing part of the meet was to watch how our team united and worked together. I’m so excited about our team it’s the largest it has ever been with 80 athletes and six extraordinary coaches.” West led the Friars with a couple of individual race wins plus strong work in the relays. West won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.03 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 56.76 seconds. She also swam a leg for the victorious Friars in the 200-yard medley (1:48.27) and 400-yard freestyle (3:38.76). The Friars’ victory in the 200 medley was significant, considering OPRF had Samm Neilson, Ungaretti and Gill in the race. Peyton Olszowska swam the other leg (replacing the graduated Blankemeier) for the reigning state champs in that event. The Friars’ 200 medley quartet of West, Perri Stahl, Grace Rogowski and Ciara Mulcahy recorded a time of 1:48.27, ahead of OPRF’s 1:51.55. Rogowski, a top swimmer for Fenwick, placed first in the 500-yard freestyle by touching the wall at 5:23.32. The Friars’ Tatum Burek won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.18). Fenwick is off to a fast start this fall. In addition to their victory over OPRF, the Friars have beaten Mother McAuley, Benet and Jones Prep in duals. Fenwick also swept visiting Regina, Marist and Resurrection in a quad Aug. 29. Regarded as one of the best sprint swimmers in the state,

(Left to right) Fenwick swimmer Grace Rogowski, OPRF swimmer Natalie Ungaretti and Fenwick swimmer Ciara Mulcahy start off the 50-yard freestyle. The Friars defeated the Huskies 115.50-70.50. Ungaretti performed well for OPRF with first-place showings in the 50-yard (23.92) and 100-yard freestyle races (52.13) against the Friars. “It’s already been an amazing season,” Ungaretti said. “As a team, I think our main goal is to enjoy the experience. I think all of us are focused on being positive and happy and working really hard at practice. I know at the end of season meets everything will come together and enable us to shine.”

RBHS swimming Madeline Wenig and Chloe Marello led the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish at the York Invite over the weekend. Wenig, who is turning in a terrific freshman campaign, won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.06) and came in second in the 200 IM (2:14.38). Marello recorded a pair of lifetime best swims in the 200 and 500 freestyle races. Marello touched the wall at 2:08.53 in the 200 freestyle and 5:45.03 in the 500 freestyle to finish seventh and sixth, respectively. After winning its first four games with relative ease, the Riverside-Brookfield High School football team faced its toughest test to date on Friday, Sept. 22 during the school’s annual homecoming game. The suddenly battle-tested Bulldogs rallied for a 20-9 comeback win against Wheaton Academy at the Kennelly Athletic Complex. Quarterback Brad Thorson threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Noah Jones to give the Warriors a 6-0 late in the first quarter. RBHS tied the score at 6-6 when senior running back Nicolas Del Nodal (20 carries, 141 yards) scored on a 7-yard scamper into the end zone early in the second quarter. Miles Vander Klok made a 35-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to put Wheaton Academy ahead 9-6. The Bulldogs responded with a pair of touchdowns to win the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game 20-9. RBHS took the lead, 12-9, for good on quarterback Hunter Hughes’ 3-yard TD pass to Del Nodal. Hughes continued his efficient play by completing 17 of 22 passes for 135 yards. On Wheaton Academy’s final possession, RBHS linebacker Anthony Walsh picked off a Thorson pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown in the closing seconds of the game. The Bulldogs’ top receiver, Stefan Giminski, also shone in other areas of play with an interception, three punts inside the 20-yard line and a 35-yard punt return. Wide receivers Zachary Vaia (5 catches, 73 yards) and Devin Moody (4 catches, 33 yards) and defensive lineman Sam Gomez (4 tackles, sack) also starred for RBHS.

Fenwick senior wide receiver Michael O’Laughlin caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Danny Cronin to pull the Friars within 14-7 of host Loyola with 8:30 left in the second quarter of Saturday’s Chicago Catholic League crossover. But, the Ramblers dominated the action the rest of the way, outscoring Fenwick by 27 points to notch a 41-14 victory on Sept. 22 in Wilmette. Last season, Loyola rocked Fenwick 52-21 en route to a 13-1 record and Class 8A state finals appearance. This time against Loyola, the West Virginia-bound O’Laughlin had the Friars’ best performance offensively with eight catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns. The team’s other top playmakers, Cronin (10-for-20, 144 yards, 3 interceptions, 2 touchdowns) and senior running back Jason Ivery (8 carries, 43 yards) were held in check. Fenwick rushed for 56 yards on 18 carries. Loyola quarterback Quinn Boyle completed 20 of 29 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns and ran 17 times for 115 yards. His dual threat effectiveness coupled with senior running back Hamid Bullie (16 carries, 62 yards, 2 TDs) caused Fenwick problems. Defensively for Fenwick, sophomore defensive lineman Jacob Kaminski had 7.5 tackles and Lorenzano Blakeney (4 tackles, interception) played well.

Lions leveled by OPRF on ice LTHS struggles with penalties, pace of play against highly skilled Huskies BY PATRICK SKRINE Contributing Reporter

Lyons Township and Oak Park and River Forest squared off Sunday at the Paul Hruby Ice Arena in Oak Park. While the high school hockey clubs have a burgeoning rivalry, their latest encounter lacked any suspense as the Huskies routed the visiting Lions 10-0. Undisciplined hockey served as the narrative for both teams. Despite the Huskies’ scoring barrage, OPRF and LTHS both committed penalties way beyond the amount of goals. Although the play was scratchy at times, the intensity was palpable and perhaps a contributing factor for the excessive miscues on the ice. LTHS coach Sean Nicholson alluded to how much referees have cracked down on penalties. “Every year they tighten everything up so it’s hard to let the kids play,” Nicholson said. “I think both teams came out excited and had to finish letting out all the cobwebs. We were very undisciplined; obviously it cost us.” While both teams spent equal time in the penalty box, OPRF generated offense throughout the game. The Huskies established a heavy forechecking game early in the first period, which prevented the Lions from smoothly getting the puck out of their own zone. OPRF center Max Goldstein scored first midway through

the first period, after roofing one in the slot directly off a pass on the rush. With 42 seconds left in the opening period, Liam Burns caught a stretch pass and shot the puck past the LTHS goalie to make the score 2-0 heading into the first intermission. The Huskies’ speed and physicality continued to wear down the Lions in the second period. OPRF added three goals to establish a 5-0 lead. Early in the frame, OPRF capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play. Burns dished a cross-pass to Goldstein who elicited plenty of cheers in the home crowd with a dazzling onetimer. Midway through the second, forward Hank Burkett buried a big rebound making it 4-0. Burns tallied a shorthanded goal with 7:20 left to extend the lead to 5-0 at the end of two periods. The Huskies tacked on five goals in the third period to cap off their lopsided victory. Sam Pecenka, PJ Gonzalez, Burkett, Owen Metric and Goldstein scored a goal each. The Lions simply couldn’t stop OPRF on the rush all game. The Huskies’ pace allowed them to dictate tempo offensively and sustain pressure in the LTHS zone. OPRF, which scored almost all of its goals around the net, outshot the Lions 38-13. Despite the tough outing, Nicholson is optimistic about the Lions’ future. In fact, LTHS had won four of five games leading into OPRF. The Lions defeated Lake Forest Gold,

The Lyons Township Hockey Club finished second at the Gator Cup tournament. Evanston and Prep en route to a 4-2 loss against rival Hinsdale Central in the Gator Cup final. LTHS also beat Marist 5-1 on Sept. 21 as Joshua Rich, Peter Elser, Miko Ortega, Nathan Davis, and John Sommerfeld each scored a goal for the Lions. “We have a lot of young guys, especially on defense, but we have a lot of depth up front,” Nicholson said. “Once the younger guys adjust to the varsity pace, we’ll be alright. “We all have bad games like this one, but we’re going to be just fine this year. OPRF looked really good and did a great job of capitalizing on our weaknesses.”
