Some area residents are especially concerned about the risk of cancer caused by exposure to a gas called ethylene oxide that is emitted from a facility in Willowbrook about 10 miles southwest of RiversideBrookfield High School.

A number of local parents send their kids to the Diamond Edge Academy for baseball skills training. Diamond Edge is located less than 100 yards from one of the two Sterigenics facilities emitting ethylene oxide, which can cause cancer after long-term exposure.

Riverside resident Nilsa Sweetser’s 8-yearold son had been going to Diamond Edge Academy, but doesn’t any longer.

On Sept. 22 some 500 parishioners of four west suburban Catholic parishes – St. Barbara, St. Louise de Marillac, Divine Providence and Divine Infant -- gathered at Divine Providence Church in Westchester to hear Cardinal Blaise Cupich’s decision regarding their futures.

The news was bittersweet.

First, the news that everyone was expecting: None of the parishes would continue to exist independently as they had in the past – in the case of St. Barbara Parish in Brookfield, for the past 102 years.

“The whole structure is being changed,” said the Rev. Denis Condon, pastor of St. Louise de Marillac Church in LaGrange Park since 2010. “We’re setting off into uncharted waters in a certain sense.”

In his letter to parishioners in the Sept. 23 parish bulletin, Condon acknowledged the loss of the autonomy, comparing it to a sort of death that would lead to a renewal.

“It’s our time to embrace the resurrection here and now and look forward to the life that is to come,” Condon wrote. “We will have a new shape and form and even a new name, but we will still be the good people of God that we are now.”

Parishioners had been bracing themselves for that reality since March, when all four parishes began their journey through the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Renew My Church initiative, which will realign every parish in the archdiocese in response to dwindling congregations, school enrollment and clergy.

The final decision by the cardinal may have softened the blow somewhat. Instead of rolling all four churches into one regional parish, the cardinal decreed that St. Barbara and St. Louise would be consolidated to form one new parish, while Divine Providence and Divine Infant, both in Westchester, would consolidate to form a second new parish.

The parishes will become official – with new names and new pastors for each – on July 1, 2019. All four church buildings will continue to be used as worship sites.

Then there was some unexpected news: St. Louise de Marillac School will not be closing after this school year. Instead, it will continue to function as the parish school for the new combined St. Louise/St. Barbara parish – something that none of the renewal scenarios had contemplated.

According to Condon, the decision to keep St. Louise de Marillac School open was a last-minute decision by the cardinal. Despite the fact that the Pre-K-8 school’s enrollment is just 148, the school is not subsidized by the archdiocese and is financially viable, which may have played a role.

Rev. Jason Malave, who is the cardinal’s liaison to the Renew My Church initiative said there was “great passion around wanting to give [St. Louise School] a few more years” to see if it can boost its efforts to advertise and increase enrollment.

“They know they have their work cut out for them,” Malave said.

For the next several months, said Malave, life in each parish will continue with few outward differences, with the same Mass schedules, same clergy presiding, same parish ministries.

Condon said cooperation between St. Louise and St. Barbara has already started, with the two parishes collaborating on Advent and Lenten services. Rev. Edgar Rodriguez, who has been pastor of St. Barbara Church in Brookfield since 2016, recently presided over a school Mass at St. Louise, said Condon.

ish instead of two,” Condon said.

Rodriguez did not respond to a call seeking comment for this story. But his letter to parishioners in the Sept. 30 St. Barbara Church bulletin addressed both the feeling of loss and opportunity for renewal the process presents.

“The acceptance of loss is very hard but unity, although good for the most part, does not come without its share of challenges,” Rodriguez wrote. “It reminds us that we are different. However, although different, we live in the same world, we face the same basic challenges. … The reality is that we are more similar than we are different and it is in that space of sameness that we can begin to understand each other and work together for a better future for St. Barbara and St. Louise de Marillac.”

Behind the scenes, the archdiocese will begin the process of finding a new pastor for the two new parishes. The process will be open to any priest wishing to apply for the job.

Condon confirmed he won’t seek to be pastor of the new parish. He has sent a letter to Cupich asking to be permitted to retire on June 30, 2019, St. Louise de Marillac’s final day as an autonomous parish.

Malave said the archdiocese will select pastors for the new parishes in March 2019 and they will begin their jobs on July 1, 2019.

Six vehicles and a garage were targeted for burglary overnight on Sept. 23-24 in the 100 and 200 blocks of Lawton Road, Riverside police have reported.

According to police reports, an offender entered a vehicle whose doors were unlocked but whose windows were open and stole several items, including two fully loaded 9 mm handgun magazines, two boxes of 12-gauge shotgun shells, two Samsung tablets, an iPad and a new Microsoft Surface computer valued at $3,000.

Police reported that someone attempted to use the Surface computer at about 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 24.

During the same time period, someone entered an unlocked garage in the 200 block of Lawton Road and ransacked an unlocked vehicle parked inside before stealing a Specialized bicycle valued at $1,450. Nothing appeared to be missing from the car.

In the 100 block of Lawton Road three unlocked vehicles had been entered. It’s not clear if anything of value was reported missing from those vehicles. Some loose change may have been taken from the center console of one of them.

“I implore residents to lock their vehicles and garages and to leave outside lights on,” said Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel in a bulletin sent out via email to residents.

“These particular burglaries were undoubtedly a crime of opportunity. It appears the offender(s) just went driveway to driveway trying door handles or garage doors until they found ones that were unlocked.”

Theft from vehicle at mall A 29-year-old Lyons woman called North Riverside police on Sept. 25 to report that her son’s backpack was stolen from her car, which was parked in the lot at the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, between 4:20 and 5:20 p.m.

The victim told police she believed the vehicle was locked while it was unattended, although the police report does not describe any signs of forced entry. The backpack contained a Dell laptop computer.

Felony drug charges A 38-year-old Brookfield man faces felony drug possession/distribution charges after a police officer stopped his vehicle while it was driving northbound on Maple Avenue at Ogden with its hazard lights on and both its passenger tires completely flat on Sept. 29 at 1:05 a.m.

While speaking with the driver of the 2011 Kia SUV, identified as Edwin J. Sierra, the officer reported a strong odor of fresh cannabis coming from the vehicle. After reportedly receiving permission from Sierra to search the vehicle, police reported finding a plastic storage bin in the rear compartment of the SUV.

The bin reportedly contained 10 zip-top bags containing roughly 280 grams of cannabis, 24 cannabis oil cartridges totaling about 600 grams, about 2,170 grams of edible cannabis gummies, a pill bottle containing 41 tablets of acetaminophen with codeine and $1,200 in cash, in addition to drug paraphernalia and items containing a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charging Sierra with felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Child struck by vehicle Riverside police cited a 47-year-old Riverside woman for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after she allegedly struck a 9-yearold boy with her vehicle as he crossed the street at the intersection of Herrick and Longcommon roads at about 4:10 p.m. on Sept. 27.

Paramedics treated injuries that were described as non-life threatening bruising and scrapes on the front and back of his body as well as a leg injury. They transported him to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for additional treatment.

According to police, the driver said she was southbound on Longcommon Road and stopped at the Herrick Road stop sign. She proceeded through the intersection and reportedly struck the boy, who was in the crosswalk, crossing from west to east.

No crossing guards were on duty as their shifts had already ended for the day, and it was not immediately after school recessed for the day.

Gas siphoned from car A resident of the 3600 block of Arden Avenue, Brookfield, contacted police to report that sometime between 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 and noon on Sept. 27 someone siphoned about a half tank of gas from his vehicle, which was parked outside his apartment.

The victim told police that he had a little less than a half tank of gas in his car the day before, but when he went to drive it that day, the tank was empty. No one else had access to the keys or had permission to drive the vehicle, the victim told police.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Sept. 23-30, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Chicago Portage tour

Friends of the Chicago Portage will hold their next walking tour of the Chicago Portage National Historic Site, 4800 S. Harlem Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Tour guide Gary Mechanic will explore Chicago’s “birth Story” from the geological beginnings – you’ll see the exact site where the ancient Chicago River joined the ancient Des Plaines -- to how the portage functions today. The tour is about a halfmile on a gravel path through the woods. Wear long pants and walking shoes or boots.

The free tour steps off rain or shine. Meet by the statue of Marquette, Joliet and their Native American guide, on the west side of Harlem Avenue, two blocks north of I-55.

From Houby Queen to township supervisor

H

ere’s a trivia question for you. Who was the first Houby Queen? It was Vera Jandacek Wilt, the former North Riverside village trustee who is now Riverside Township supervisor.

My column on mushrooms (houbys) and the Houby Festival last week prompted interest, so here are some more fun facts about the event.

The first Berwyn-Cicero Houby Festival, which celebrates its 50th year this weekend, took place in 1968 and was started by the Cermak Road Business Association. Since mushroom patterns could be found on almost anything in the area business from dish towels to jewelry – autumn being traditional houby harvest time for Czechs and Slovaks -- the association decided to capitalize on the little gems and thus the event evolved.

Pictures of the candidates for Houby Queen could be found in member businesses along with ballot boxes, so patrons could cast ballots. Voting also resulted in patrons receiving a raffle ticket from each store. Needless to say, the ballot boxes were full.

Cicero resident Vera Jandacek (Wilt) was a candidate in the inaugural queen contest and joined the other contestants in the parade, which with the announcement of the name of the Houby Queen.

The queen’s duties did not amount to much, according to Wilt, but she was invited to appear on a Chicago TV show hosted by Jack Eigen. Wilt was accompanied by hour business association members who, as she said, were nervous as to what their queen would say. She made the group proud, extolling the Houby Festival and its merits.

VERA WILT Wilt related that mushrooms played an important part in the Jandacek household. Her father was a well-known mushroom forager even finding a 30-pound mushroom.

Her brother, Tony, continued the tradition becoming an expert in the field of mushrooms.

There is always more to the story. It went from houbys to a young Cicero girl who worked part-time at the Ondrus and Sons Draperies Store, attended Morton High School and UIC-Chicago, became the first Houby queen and now is Riverside Township supervisor.

Edwards and the female passenger were trapped in the vehicle and had to be pulled from it by police, who also extinguished the fire. The four others were taken into custody at the scene. All were hospitalized for treatment of injuries ranging from lacerations to concussions to broken bones and internal bleeding. All were in police custody by Sept.

“This incident could have easily resulted in a multiple fatal crash or serious injuries from gunfire,” said Weitzel in a press release.

Police also reported recovering about $7,740 in cash at the crash scene and along the twoblock pursuit route. Police reported seeing cash flying out of the windows of the car as it sped westbound on East Burlington Street.

Investigators also recovered three loaded handguns, a .40-caliber gun reported stolen out of Tipton County, Indiana, in 2016 and two 9 mm handguns.

The weapons and recovered shell casings were turned over to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab to see if they match.

According to Weitzel, the scope of the investigation, the department’s need to guard suspects at two different hospitals and the number of people involved, nearly overwhelmed Riverside’s small department.

North Riverside police were called upon to respond to routine Riverside calls, Weitzel said, because his officers were too busy working on the robbery case.

“Every single Riverside police officer worked some aspect of this case by assisting in the investigation, guarding prisoners, collecting evidence, searching for video or street coverage because manpower was being utilized toward this investigation,” Weitzel said.

ACT scores fall for 2nd year at Riverside-Brookfield High School 22.1 matches lowest score in past seven years

The Riverside-Brookfield High School Class of 2018 posted a composite ACT score that matched the lowest score by a graduating class in the last seven years.

That was the disappointing news that Kylie Lindquist, assistant principal for

curriculum and instruction, had to deliver to the District 208 school board last week.

The average composite ACT score for the RBHS Class of 2018 was 22.1, a drop of 0.5 points from the 22.6 score achieved by the Class of 2017. The Class of 2016 also complied an average ACT composite score of 22.1. The Class of 2015 achieved a score of 23.3, the highest in the last seven years.

The 2018 score was also lower than those achieved by the classes of 2012, 2013 and 2014. It also fell far short of the lofty goal of an average score of 26 that was set a few years ago by the District 208 Board of Education, a goal that many educators consider unrealistic.

Lindquist pointed out that it is difficult to compare the test scores of different

graduating classes, since some graduating classes are academically stronger than others.

“The students in each of these cohorts are very different,” Lindquist told the school board.

District 103 kicks off search for new superintendent

Online survey will ask for input about top qualities in new leader

Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 has once again turned to an arm of the Illinois Association of School Boards to conduct a search for a new superintendent.

In the wake of Carol Baker’s resignation this summer to take a job in Hinsdale, the district is being led by co-interim superintendents, Patrick Patt and Robert Madonia.

The District 103 Board of Education voted 4-0 on Sept. 24 to hire the IASB to conduct its search for a new superintendent, who will start in the in next summer. The IASB has led superintendent searches for District 103 before including the one that culminated with Baker being hired in 2016.

Alan Molby, a retired superintendent who led Hillside School District 93 for 14 years, who now works for the IASB will lead the search. Molby also worked on the search that brought Baker to District 103.

The IASB is generally the cheapest alternative for superintendent searches. The district

will pay the IASB $7,900 for the search. Private search firms are typically much more expensive.

“The ISAB does a real professional job of it,” Patt said. “Some of the private search firms charge double or triple that.”

One reason the IASB is cheaper than private search firms is that they typically do not go out and recruit candidates for the job.

“We like to say we attract,” Molby told the school board when he made his presentation to the board at the Sept. 10 meeting. That’s why we don’t have to recruit.”

Molby is working with the district to create a survey that will soon be available on the district’s website and perhaps sent out to parents to get input on what stakeholders believe are the most important attributes for a new superintendent to have.

The results of the survey will be used to create a candidate profile that will be posted on various websites. The ISAB will also create a brochure describing the district and the job opening.

After the candidate profile is created, applications will be accepted for about six to eight weeks, Molby said. Then Molby and other consultants from IASB will review and investigate applicants and pick six to eight to bring before the school board for interviews.

At the Sept. 24 school board meeting, Patt went to so far to warn Getty not to run a slate of school board candidates in next spring’s elections.

Patt said that district needs stability and that politics has no place in schools. Patt pointed out that all three Getty-backed candidates, including two incumbents, lost in the 2017 school board elections and he said that he hoped that Getty would not risk another defeat.

“I’m hoping he really thinks hard and long about whether there really needs to be a slate of candidates who would not be here for the right reason, but would be here to politicize the school system,” said Patt, who added he offered to meet with Getty. “So that’s my fatherly advice, because I know the mayor is very young and I actually was a school superintendent before the mayor was born.”

Riverside Library receives two gifts totaling $35,000 Total donated since capital campaign started stands at $151,000

The next of those opportunities will be a Harvest Bingo event at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, on Saturday, Oct. 20. Tickets to the 21-over, BYOB event are $30 and can be bought at the library or www.riversidelibrary.ticketleap.com/ harvest-bingo.

The library is also planning on hosting its 2nd Annual Reading Between the Wines wine-tasting fundraiser in February. The inaugural event last year raised $14,000 and was accompanied by a $12,000 matching donation by a Riverside resident.

According to library Director Janice Foley, officials need to raise between $230,000 and $250,000 before they can embark on any of the planned renovation projects.

The first to be tackled, Foley said, would likely be the early learners’ space, located in the southwest corner of the lower level, with excellent views of the river.

“That involved the most work, and also would open up the rest of the area downstairs,” Foley said. “We would love to be able to start construction by next summer.”

“I’d like to know why the board was brought in so late in this process,” said McTeague. “It seemed if we were going to start doing naming rights that the procedure would have been that the foundation or [library director] Kim [Coughran] would come to the board and say, ‘The foundation would like this tool,’ and we as a group could start discussing it and talk through all the issues – what do we mean by naming? Are we naming the building, different rooms? How do we think the community would feel about it?

Svendsen said she had not gotten answers about questions about what roles the foundation, the Friends of the Library, the board and staff would play in the capital campaign seeking donations to aid in construction.

She also questioned whether a $1 million donation, as a percentage of the estimated $10 million cost of construction, warranted renaming the library.

“Is that where we really want to set the bar?” Svendsen asked.

Michael Bruni of HUB Philanthropic Solutions, which has been advising library and foundation officials in their capital campaign, said “percentages” were not necessarily the best way to approach such a question.

“The naming of an institution is not based off of a percentage; it’s based off of the ability of that particular constituency to invest in the project itself,” Bruni said. “Is [10] percent of philanthropic contributions in this project appropriate? Of course it’s appropriate, especially when you look at a project

like this that has an investor that’s willing to invest at this level.”

Bruni also described Francis’ gift as “transformational” in not only allowing the library board to move ahead confidently with its plan but as a gift that likely will spur other generous donations.

“Giving patterns follow transformational gifts,” Bruni said. “Transformation investments empower others to make transformational investments. … I would suggest that a two or three million dollar investment in the future is more likely with this transformational investment, and the recognition and acknowledgement that comes with it.”

While other library trustees agreed that communication between the foundation, staff and board could be improved, they had no problem with the provision for renaming the library in light of the $1 million gift.

“Are we going to wait another 20 years because we’re going to squabble about this?” asked Trustee Jennifer Mack Perry. “We’re lucky to have this opportunity. This building does not get built without this money.”

Plans call for a 21,000-square-foot library to be built on land owned by the library at 3541 Park Ave., directly across Lincoln Avenue from the present building, which was built in the 1980s.

The building will comprise three floors, two of them above ground, at 7,000 square feet each. On Sept. 24 the library board voted to approve a site plan for a rectangular structure, the long side of which would face Park Avenue but would be set back about 50 feet from the sidewalk.

The existing library will eventually be demolished to pave the way for a parking lot.

The library board bought the Park Avenue property from Brookfield United Methodist Church in 2012. That, coincidentally, was the church where Francis and her family were longtime members.

Cost estimates for the new two-story library stand at around $10 million. The library, to date, has saved about $5.3 million in a special reserve fund and the library board expects to transfer another $500,000 into the fund at the end of 2018.

Meanwhile, library officials have received assurances that it will lend up to $3.5 million for the project, which can be paid off over 15 years at an interest rate of prime plus 1 percent.

The $1 million gift from Francis would provide the rest of the balance, though the foundation is still hoping to raise more money, perhaps as much as $500,000 in the next six to eight months, to help reduce the loan amount or the amount of money needed from the special reserve fund.

In the meantime, the library’s architect is working to complete a planned unit development application for village review and approval. Officials are planning to meet with Brookfield Village Manager Timothy Wiberg in October.

Wiberg, formerly the village manager of Lincolnwood, is familiar with the library’s architectural firm, Product Architecture and Design. The firm was hired to design an expansion of the Lincolnwood Public Library, which was completed in 2017.

The Riverside Public Library’s year-old capital campaign to fund renovations to the building’s lower level got a boost last week with two donations totaling $35,000.

With the latest donations in hand, the library has raised $151,000 towards the estimated $1.3 million renovation project, which seeks to create a new teen room, a new storytime/multipurpose room, an early learners’ area, reconfigured staff offices along with children’s services and juvenile/middle school areas and an expanded public meeting room.

The latest gifts include a $25,000 donation from a Selborne Road couple, making them the library’s first “silver” level benefactors. Another Riverside resident donated $10,000, making them a “bronze” level sponsor.

In all, the library has received donations from 133 people and organizations totaling more than $80,000 since the capital campaign started, said library board President Joan Wiaduck in a press release.

In making the donation, Francis noted that her grandchildren live down the street from the library and, because they are homeschooled, visit the library often.

“They’re always here,” Francis said of her grandchildren after the library board voted unanimously to accept her gift. “If we can help, we’re going to help.”

That particular requirement received a bit of pushback from two library trustees, Jeanne McTeague and Michelle Svendsen, who expressed concern that library trustees hadn’t been directly consulted on a naming rights policy prior to the Sept. 26 meeting where it appeared on the board agenda for

ack in 2009, Linda Sokol Francis began buying up property in the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard, right across the street from her financial services business, with a view toward building a community center/Methodist Church.

The Brookfield United Methodist Church at 3541 Park Ave., where she and her family were longtime members and where she wielded great influence, was old and expensive to maintain, the congregation was aging and dwindling.

A new community center church would be a legacy gift to Brookfield, a community center that could be used by the entire community while providing the Methodist congregation a modern place to worship.

The village of Brookfield interrupted that dream, though Francis hasn’t given up that hope. In 2012, the Brookfield United Methodist Church sold its property to the Brookfield Public Library, whose board of trustees had a dream of its own.

Saddled with a small, obsolete library at 3609 Grand Blvd., the library board saw the old church property as its chance to build a new facility. The board hired an architect, drew up plans for a $14 million facility, and got the plan approved by the village board.

The only thing they lacked was the financial wherewithal to make it happen. In 2016, the library board took the matter to voters, who turned down taking on $10.3 million in debt, which would have resulted in a property tax hike.

So, the library shifted gears, coming up this year with a smaller library – costing about $10 million. The trouble was, they still lacked the money.

Until last week.

Francis, who had been saving money to fund her dream of a community center/church about a block to the northwest, donated $1 million of that savings to help fund the construction of a new library.

As it turned out, the donation was the critical piece of the puzzle. The library board by the end of 2018 will have saved about $6 million in taxpayer dollars in a special fund created for the project. The library board has also lined up a bank loan of up to $3.5 million.

Francis’ gift makes all of the numbers work, and a foundation formed by friends of the library aims to raise even more money to help defray the amount of debt needed to build the new building.

In exchange, the library board has agreed to rename the library. The exact name has yet to be worked out, but from our perspective the name is irrelevant.

There is some chatter that somehow this gift and the renaming of the library takes the library away from the public.

That’s ludicrous. The library – whatever its future name – is and will continue to be operated, funded and maintained by Brookfield residents for the common good of Brookfield.

What the new name recognizes is a woman who has worked for the common good of Brookfield – as a resident, taxpayer, business owner, elected official, tireless volunteer and philanthropist -- for decades.

That someone believes in the village of Brookfield so much as to hand it a $1 million gift to make a new public library a reality is amazing, a cause for celebration.

Vote now as if people mattered The 2018 midterm election has started. With less than 35 days before Election Day, early voting in DuPage County has begun and in Cook County will begin soon.

For locations and times, just google early voting in Illinois and you are set to act.

Not registered to vote yet? No problem. Illinois offers online registration (Oct. 21 deadline) and same-day registration on Election Day, Nov. 6. With access to a computer or cellphone, the question of “how to vote” is easily answered.

Why we should vote is self-evident if we consider the nature of the ongoing American experiment of self-governance. Our system relies upon an active and informed citizenry to function as designed – to have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

We, the citizens, are the bosses of those we send to statehouses and Congress on our behalf. They are our employees, and it is our civic duty to hold them accountable for their job performance. The midterm election is the time to hire and fire.

When it comes to deciding who should be trusted to work for us, I have found five questions to be very telling: What if we voted for candidates who act as if people mattered?

What if people mattered more than money and power?

Would we have found a way to declare companies the same as people in order to remove all limits on special interest contributions to political campaigns and candidates?

What if children mattered more than the special interests of the fossil fuel industry? Would we continue to ignore the consensus of 98 percent of global scientists on the existential threat of climate change and refuse to take decisive action to combat it?

What if students mattered more than guns? Would we continue to resist adopting common sense gun safety regulations that will protect people and our 2nd Amendment rights?

What if the reality of sexual assault of women mattered? Would we continue to ignore the fact that 1 in 6 women experience rape or attempted rape at least once

Over the past 20 months, the party in power of all three branches of government in Washington, D.C., has answered these questions very clearly: profits over the health of people, guns over the lives of students, power for the few over justice for all.

Chiefs informative at Aging Well event Tuesday, Sept. 25, Aging Well Brookfield Committee sponsored a most informative, entertaining and useful program for the Cathy Colgrass Cafe Senior Nutrition Program lunch crowd at the Elks Club on 31st Street.

Our village police chief, James Episcopo, and fire chief, Mark Duffek, shared handouts, stories and recommendations for residents that reflect their 30-plus years each of service to the Brookfield community. Their remarks conveyed information about accessing services, new technology, safety measures and current scams.

The message we were to walk away with is that no concern is too small to call 911.

In addition to the useful information the two chiefs worked smoothly and well together. Their combined knowledge, experience and comfort with each other indicated mutual respect and a great commitment to the community and its residents. Quite a team!

I appreciate the examples of our village employee efforts getting recognized and promoted.

Thanks to all that brought this enjoyable and valuable program to the 50 plus attendees.

Anita S. Caselman, 96 North Riverside resident Anita S. Caselman (nee Eich), of North Riverside, 96, died Sept. 24, 2018.

Ms. Caselman was the wife of the late Richard A. Caselman; the mother of Steven P. (Linda) Soenksen, the late Susan Marie Manhart and baby Richard Roy Soenksen; the grandmother of Todd Manhart, Scott and Mark (Rebecca) Soenksen; and the great-grandmother of Grace and Andrew Soenksen.

She was a strong woman who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved her North Riverside community and the house she lived in for 50 years. She also had a soft spot for animals and old movies and had a wickedly dry sense of humor. She will be missed greatly by her family who know she is now at peace with her loved ones.

Ms. Gargano was the mother of Gina (Jon) Chorover, Laura Gargano and Patricia Gargano; the grandmother of Talia and Nathan; the sister of Charles (Mary Lou) Bubel, Richard Bubel and the late George Bubel, Mary Bombino and Paul Bubel; and the aunt of many nieces and nephews.

aimed at turning conventional ideas about demen dementia on their heads by focusing on what we can learn from people with dementia. The session includes a performance by musician Samite Mulondo, a Ugandan refugee who starred in the film Alive Inside, which tells the story of using music to reach patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.

While helpful for those living with dementia and their allies, Bolinder says this experience is for the entire community “because it’s about the human condition.”

For Bolinder, Oak Park is particularly well-suited to host the ChangingAging Tour. “I’m learning that Oak Park is a unique community, and it has contributed two things to our culture in America that are indelible. The first is Frank Lloyd Wright’s commitment to architecture. You see that at work throughout the country today. The second is McDonald’s.”

Think what you like about McDonald’s and its food, but Bolinder points out that there are aspects of the restaurant chain beyond the cheeseburger, such as the colors, the catchy slogans and the entrylevel jobs it offers that are a cultural touchstone for our country.

Bolinder says an overarching message for the community is that the ChangingAging Tour is for all ages. The cast is intergenerational, and Bolinder promises music fans that the “next Beyoncé” is one of the performers.

“The show is for everyone. If you approach the idea that your life is not over when you get old, you’ll live your life differently.”

Come for the tacos, stay for the chapulines Grasshoppers feature at Ogden Avenue Mayan-style taqueria

E

nrique Ortega and his cousin, Edergil Figueroa, owned a Wing Stop restaurant in Chicago before opting to leave behind the corporate food world in favor of independent restaurant ownership.

Taco Bout It, their two-month old Mexican eatery at 8819 Ogden Ave., brings authentic Mexican fare with an artistic flair to Brookfield and the surrounding western suburbs.

A Mexican background gave Ortega and Figueroa the passion required to bring their taco hot spot to life and a chef-consultant helped the duo hone their unique perspective on tortilla wrapped treats.

“Neither of us have a culinary background,” says Ortega. “We are both just foodies and our consultant helped us create a menu based on our personal preferences.”

The tiny, well-appointed, counter service, blue corn tortilla-centric spot is turning out thoughtful tacos, burritos and cemitas for adventurous eaters. CANCER RISK Ethylene oxide from page 1 “I am definitely as a parent concerned,” Sweetser said. “We have pulled back on him attending trainings at the facility, and we will not be returning there because of the health concerns.”

Cancer rates in the area within a few miles of the two Sterigenics facilities in Willowbrook are well above average, according to a map on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website.

The rates in the immediate area of the plant are among the highest in the nation, ranking behind the so-called “cancer alley” area of Louisiana along an area of the Mississippi River just south of Baton Rouge, which is filled with chemical plants.

The high cancer rates near the Sterigenics facility were first reported by the Chicago Tribune in late August. Sterigenics uses ethylene oxide, a colorless, odorless gas, to sterilize medical equipment and supplies and has been emitting the gas in Willowbrook since 1984.

In July Sterigenics installed new scrubbers, which are supposed to reduce the emissions of ethylene oxide by as much as 90 percent.

The cancer rate in the census tract where the Sterigenics facilities are located in Willowbrook include 282 excess cancer cases than would normally be expected, per million. However, there is no apparent immediate risk from short-term exposure to ethylene oxide.

Cancer rates in Riverside, Brookfield, and North Riverside seem to hover in the range of about 50 excess cancer cases per million according the EPA’s 2014 National Air Toxics Assessment map. Those rates are somewhat higher than many other areas in the Chicago metropolitan area, which typically hover around 30 or 40 cases per million.

Approximately 50 concerned people, including two state representatives and Riverside Village President Ben Sells, attended a meeting last week at the Riverside Public Library to learn more about the issue. They heard from four activists from the Stop Sterigenics Group during a Sept. 26 meeting hosted by the Indivisible West Suburban Action League.

The distance ethylene oxide can travel varies with the wind speed and the temperature, said Sri Rao, a spokesman for the Stop Sterigenics group and a former teacher at River-

side-Brookfield High School.

“We’ve seen everything from two miles to 10 miles,” Rao told the Landmark.

The activists are also concerned about ethylene oxide emissions from the Ele Corporation, a one-facility specialty chemical plant located at 7847 W. 47th Street in McCook.

Cancer rates are significantly higher than normal in Lyons, registering 90 excess cases per million according to the EPA’s 2014 National Air Toxics Assessment map, which specifies ethylene oxide as the main risk factor.

Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) is concerned about the McCook plant. Late last week, Lipinski issued a statement saying that the EPA recently issued a report showing elevated cancer risk in McCook, Lyons, Stickney, Brookfield and Riverside due to emissions of ethylene oxide, and that the Ele Corporation plant in McCook is the main source of those emissions.

But Lipinski also said that actual levels of ethylene oxide may be lower than what the EPA report showed. Lipinski wrote a letter to the general manager of the McCook plant urging further testing.

“These need to be confirmed by more detailed testing, so I am calling on the Ele Corporation to carry out such tests as soon as possible,” Lipinski wrote. “If the tests show

that there is a public health threat, the company needs to take immediate action to address it.”

On Saturday Scott Brunson, the vice-president for operations at Ele Corporation, sent Lipinski a letter in response, stating that additional tests will be done. He said, however, that Ele’s emissions of ethylene oxide “are well below its applicable permit emissions limits and reported estimated emissions, and are protective to the community.”

McCook Mayor Jeffrey Tobolski, who represents the Cook County Board’s 16th District, says that the ethylene oxide has been used at the plant for at least 20 years and is used in a way that renders it mostly inert.

Tobolski said further testing should be done and has asked for help from the Cook County Department of Public Health and the county’s Department of Environmental Sustainability.

He said that the Illinois EPA is going to conduct a cancer cluster study to see if there are abnormally high cancer rates in the area.

But Tobolski didn’t seem too worried about health risks from ethylene oxide in McCook.

“This chemical has been in use in McCook for 20 years and my people live to be 100, and there’s just nobody in McCook who is dying of any type of cancer,” Tobolski said.

onsidering the Riverside-Brookfield High School girls golf team had only three returners and six golfers overall on the varsity this fall, the team turned in a commendable campaign.

Although RBHS finished with a 4-7 record, four of the losses were by less than eight strokes.

“We were just a couple of putts here and there of having a much better record,” RBHS coach Mark Gouwens said. “We went into this season knowing we had some rebuilding to do. With one senior and two sophomores as our only returning players, we were very dependent on the development of our new players. The number of wins and near misses is a testament to their hard work and determination.”

The Bulldogs came in fourth place at the Metro Suburban Conference Tournament.

They also garnered third at the Willowbrook Invitational, marking the fourth straight year RBHS brought home a trophy from that event. Kiki Keen carded a 33 to earn a silver medal.

“This season has been a process in which we had to learn to measure our progress against ourselves,” Gouwens said. “Our goal was to get better each time we got to the course and we did. To finish fourth as the only public school at conference is a great achievement for such a young team.”

Keen earned all-conference and all-tournament honors in the Metro Suburban.

Fellow returners senior Isabel Hughes and sophomore Eva Funaki provided additional stability.

Newcomers Gillian Gaines, Tess Bruno and Elizabeth Centorcelli improved over the course of the season.

“Many of our new players were thrown into varsity matches having never been on a golf course in their lives,” Gouwens noted.

“As we head into a tough regional at Cog Hill, I expect several of our players to be able to advance to the sectional level.”

LTHS girls The Lions finished right in the middle of the West Suburban Conference Meet with a score of 393 and fifth-place result at the Broken Arrow Golf Course on Sept. 25.

With the regular season in the books, allconference players Elizabeth Sommerfeld

and Nora Kirby will power LTHS (5-4) into the postseason.

“We have a great group of girls that have a team-first attitude,” LTHS coach Jeff Johnson said. “They are very supportive of each other and very coachable. The team is focused on playing well and trying to get into the top three teams in our regional.”

The Lions are in Glenbard East Regional of the IHSA Class 2A state playoffs. The regional is hosted by Glendale Lake Golf Course in Glendale Heights.

The Friars capped off their stellar regular season in style at the Chicago Catholic League Championship.

Josh Kirkham won the CCL individual title with a 2-under par 70. Following Reese Wildermuth (2017) and Jack Mortell (2016), Kirkham became the third consecutive Friar to be the varsity medalist at the tournament and Lawless Player of the Year.

Teammate Jake Wiktor carded a 75 at the CCL Championship. The Friars earned second in the team standings behind Loyola Academy.

Prior to their CCL Championship clash, the Friars edged the Ramblers to go undefeated in dual matches (11-0, 6-0 CCL) during the regular season. Wiktor led Fenwick with a score of 35 against Loyola.

In addition to success in dual matches, the Friars fared extremely well in invitationals this fall. Fenwick took first at the Providence and Mount Carmel Invites and second at the St. Ignatius Invitational.

The Friars’ final tuneup for the postseason occurred over the weekend. Fenwick won the Lyons Township Invite. Jackson Schaeffer finished first with a 2-over 73 and Wiktor carded a 75 as the runner-up. Phil Sandor also notched a top 10 finish.

The Friars begin their postseason journey at the Lane Regional. The site is the Hilldale Golf Club in Hoffman Estates.

By their lofty standards, the Lions had a bit of an erratic regular season. Nevertheless, LTHS posted respectable results with a 6-3 record in dual matches. In the West Suburban Conference Championships, LTHS placed fifth with a score of 310 and won four of six dual matches. The Lions won the Addison Trail Invite (310) and took fourth at the Dundee-Crown Invite (306) in their best outing of the season.

Bulldogs rally late against Ridgewood Fourth-quarter TDs by Murphy, Gentile propel Bulldogs to win

Engaged in a defensive battle with host Ridgewood, the Riverside-Brookfield High School football team scratched out two touchdowns over the final nine minutes of the fourth quarter to earn a gritty 14-3 conference crossover win.

The RBHS defense triggered the rally by denying the Rebels on a fourth down-and-one at the Bulldogs’ 2-yard line. On the ensuing possession, RBHS went on an 11-play, 98-yard scoring drive, capped off by freshman quarterback Owen Murphy’s 1-yard sneak into the end zone. Samuel Halwaji kicked the extra point to give the Bulldogs a 7-3 lead.

The defense came up big again when Dominick Rowe picked off a pass at the Ridgewood 37. Eight plays later, Luke Gentile scored on a sweep run for nine yards. Halwaji added the point after to make the score 14-3.

“Our defense continues to impress me and play really excellent football,” RBHS coach Brendan Curtin said. “Ridgewood took the opening drive into our territory and had some opportunities, but we held them to a field goal. They had the ball again late in the fourth quarter and were sniffing a touchdown. but our defense held strong and kept them out of the end zone.”

Rowe (8 tackles, interception) and Connor Pitts (team-high 9 tackles, fumble recovery) led the Bulldogs’ performance defensively.

On offense, the Bulldogs moved the ball via multiple contributors. Murphy (7-for12, 73 yards) and fellow quarterback Dario Marchica (6-for-9, 56 yards) both saw playing time behind center.

Gentile led the ground game with 43 yards on 10 carries and Chris Doherty had 31 yards on nine runs. Daniel Hilliyer (3 catches, 41 yards), Joseph Shelvin (2 catches, 36 yards) and Elliot Royer (2 catches, 25 yards) led the

“It took our offense a little while to get things going but nobody panicked,” Curtin said. “Our run game was by committee and we were able to pass the ball around with multiple quarterbacks and receivers.”

RBHS tallied 129 yards passing and 85 yards rushing highlighted by two touchdowns. Ridgewood had 279 yards of total offense, but managed just one field goal in the first half.

“I think the boys are starting to mature and develop a better a grasp of our philosophies on offense, defense and special teams,” Curtin said. “We’re becoming a smarter football team, which means we are not continuing to make the same mistakes twice. That’s been a point of focus for us.”

The Bulldogs (2-4, 0-3 Metro Suburban Blue) take on host St. Francis (5-1, 2-1) Friday, Oct. 5 in Wheaton. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Fenwick stuffs St. Laurence in OT Cronin, Skowyra spark Friars’ second-half comeback, overtime win

After a much-needed win against Leo in Week 4, the Fenwick High School football team’s fighting spirit was on full display during a 28-27 win against St. Laurence on Sept. 28 at Triton College in River Grove.

Trailing 13-0 at halftime, Fenwick rallied with timely plays on offense, defense and special teams in the second half.

With less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, the Friars made their move. Junior quarterback Danny Cronin threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Lopez with 33 seconds left. Kicker Bryan Dowd made the extra point to tie the score at 21.

In overtime, Cronin scored on a 12-yard run to put the Friars ahead 28-21. The Vikings responded with a touchdown; however, the Friars’ stuffed a 2-point conversion attempt by St. Laurence to seal their homecoming victory.

Fenwick senior Konrad Skowyra made the play of the game, blocking Liam McCarthy’s punt and returning it 71 yards for a touchdown.

Skowyra and Max Forst (7 tackles apiece), Tim Carey (3.5 tackles) and Jared Perry (interception) led the defense.

Cronin completed 6 of 15 passes for 57 yards and a TD. He added a pair of rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner in OT. Lopez (17 carries, 79 yards) and Marcus Wright (4 catches, 46 yards) also contributed offensively.

Fenwick (2-4, 1-1 CCL Green) hosts Montini on Friday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Triton College.

Roadrunners crush Carmel The Nazareth Academy football team remained unbeaten with a 55-17 demolition of host Carmel on Friday. The Roadrunners (6-0, 4-0 East Suburban Catholic) scored five touchdowns in the first half to build a 48-10 lead.

Sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy continued his efficiency behind center, completing 14 of 15 passes for 236 yards and five TDs. Running back Derrick Strongs rushed for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 18 carries. Led by Diamond Evans (7 catches, 116 yards, TD) and Michael Love (6 catches, 52 yards, 2 TDs), four receivers

reached the end zone for Nazareth.

Led by Marcus Griffin, Louis Stec and Cameron Leach, the defense has been impressive all season as well.

“With all of the preseason press we received, we were very aware that each team we play would be ready and gunning for us,” Nazareth coach Tim Racki said. “This helps not looking past any opponent. Our senior class has many three-year starters so their past experience has really helped avoid complacency issues. Their leadership and focus has been outstanding.”

Nazareth hosts Marist (5-1, 4-0) in an ESCC showdown on Friday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Valenta Stadium.

The Roadrunners have outscored their opponents 234-53, while the Redhawks own a 204-78 scoring advantage.

“It will be a great game between two very balanced and physical teams,” Racki said.

“Marist matches up well with our speed.

This is the kind of game that will provide each team with a great pre-playoff type game experience regardless of which team comes out on top.”

Lindquist said that 23.3 score achieved by the Class of 2015 seemed to be an anomaly and that the 22.1 score achieved by last year’s graduation class is not far off from other recent years.

Lindquist pointed out that about a quarter of the Class of 2018 did not attend the normal feeder schools for RBHS, and some of them transferred into RBHS as late as their junior year.

“Of the graduation class of 2018, 117 of them at some point came to us from a different place,” Lindquist said.

But Lindquist said that she would not use that as an excuse for the drop in scores.

“We own these scores whether they came from Hauser, Gross or Komarek or if they

came from a different state,” Lindquist said.

Lindquist said that she prefers to look at measures of student growth from the eighth-grade Explorer test until the ACT, but even by that measure it was not a good year for RBHS. The average growth of 5.23, while well above the predicted growth of 3.9 set by the ACT, was the lowest growth of the past six years at RBHS. School board Vice President Tim Walsh, who presided over the meeting in the absence of board President Garry Gryczan, didn’t mince words reacting to Lindquist’s report.

“We had a bad year,” Walsh said. “Compared to ourselves we had a bad year. We did pretty poorly related to ourselves.”

Walsh was not impressed that average growth at RBHS exceeded what the ACT considers average expected growth.

“We don’t consider ourselves an average high school,” Walsh said. “We put more resources in than the average high school.”

Lindquist said that test fatigue may have played a role in the drop in ACT scores for the Class of 2018. The state of Illinois has switched the mandated state

test for juniors to the SAT from the ACT, so members of the Class of 2018 took both the ACT and the SAT. “We’re talking about a class that has been tested and tested and tested,” Lindquist said.

It was also not a good year for RBHS judging by the ACT’s s College Readiness Index. Just 59 percent of RBHS Class of 2018 were judged to be college ready, tying the Class of 2014 for the lowest mark in the past six years. Sixty-three percent of the Class of 2017 were considered college ready by the ACT. College readiness percentages dropped in all areas except in science, where the Class of 2018 did significantly better than the two previous graduating classes. Fifty-one percent of the Class of 2018 were considered college ready in science compared to just 45 percent for the Class of 2017 and 43 percent for the Class of 2016.

But math scores took a steep drop, with only 48 percent of the Class of 2018 meeting the ACT college readiness compared to 58 percent one year earlier.

“Our math department takes those scores very seriously,” Lindquist said.

“We are looking most closely at math.”

Lindquist said that the school has an algebra-infused academic support program with a math teacher providing extra help to those who need it.

Lindquist said that she wants to work more closely with the district’s feeder schools to coordinate curricula and make sure incoming freshmen are prepared for RBHS. Administrators and teachers at RBHS have been working with the feeder schools’ eighth-grade teachers, but Lindquist wants to create a team to work to coordinate curriculum with feeder schools starting in sixth grade.

Advanced Placement exam results dropped at bit at RB for the Class of 2018, too, although 51 more RBHS students took an AP class last year and 140 more AP Exams were administered at RBHS last year.

Some 73.5 percent of RBHS students who took an AP Exam last year received a score of 3 or above, which is generally required to get college credit, compared to 78.1 percent in 2017. But the pass rate of 73.5 percent was the third highest pass rate on AP Exams at RBHS in the last seven years.
