Three local elementary schools received the coveted “exemplary” rating from the Illinois State Board of Education in the state’s recently released school report card.

Hollywood School, Brook Park School and Congress Park School all received the exemplary rating for ranking in the top 10 percent of Illinois public schools.

Schools are ranked on a variety of factors, the most important of which is student growth, meaning the increase in academic achievement year over year rather than the absolute level of student academic performance, as measured on state tests, called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, every spring.

At Brook Park School, 48.4 percent of students met or exceeded the state standards in English/Language Arts (ELA) this year compared to just 36.5 percent last year. In See REPORT CARD on page 8

Kids catch biz bug at Youth Entrepreneur Market Brookfield Women’s Club sponsored event that drew 45 vendors

Whether trying a new sport, learning to play an instrument or attempting to master a new hobby, skills acquired when you’re young often help set a trajectory for the future and even careers.

In August, when Brookfield moms Ann Heinl and Phyllis Kastle were discussing ways to provide opportunities for kids to turn their passions into avenues for entrepreneurship, they agreed to find a way to make it happen.

“At Brook Park School, they did a project in the fourth grade where they had to come up with a business marketplace, and we figured, ‘Why not try that on a bigger scale?’” Kastle said.

So in tandem with fellow members of the Brookfield Women’s Club, Heinl and Kastle launched the Youth Entrepreneurs Market on Nov. 6, aimed at providing kids in grades 4-12 the chance to perfect a hobby and turn it into a learning lesson on civics, economics and self-confidence.

At the market, 45 kids from Brookfield, LaGrange Park, Riverside, Westchester and Berwyn set up shop at The Compassion Factory, 9210 Broadway Ave., with offerings ranging from jewelry, crocheted items, bakery, artwork and even a home landscaping business.

“We know kids are creative and can make things, but they don’t necessarily have a way to sell their things — they don’t have an Etsy shop or other opportunities,” Heinl said.

“When we proposed [the idea] to the Women’s Club, people got excited because of the community aspect and the fact you can see the impact to kids.”

As school began this fall, Heinl and Kastle put out a call for participants, reaching out to area schools and advertising the opportunity for kids to enter, either working by themselves or with a partner to sell a good or service.

“We had a philosophy that we want this to be a kid-led business,” Heinl said, “but that being said, we do know kids need the help and support of their parents. We had a meeting ahead of time so that families could see the space and logistics, and we gave them tip sheets on how to price things, cost of supplies and encouraged kids to look at Etsy and other craft fairs and determine what to charge.”

The women set up a nominal $10 entry fee so that, in their words, kids would have an investment in the opportunity. The Women’s Club also offered a mentor opportunity during the application process, providing tips and assistance on table setting, pricing and questions about gauging inventory.

With goods sold between $1 and $5 for small items and $10 and $20 for larger ones, kids practiced marketing pitches, interacting with new people and handling business transactions.

Nine-year-old Beatrix Duner of Brookfield, who first started making her own tie-dyed clothing and accessories over the summer, said the decision to participate in the youth market was a no-brainer.

“My mom participates in the Brookfield Farmers Market, and I also started selling my bags there and I found it really fun, so I wanted to see how I would sell on my own,”

she said. “I’ve seen a lot of people that I already knew and also met new people.”

Caroline Busch, 14, who first began making her own polymer clay earrings over the summer, also jumped at the opportunity to learn more about consumer economics.

“I heard about the event through my friend, and I thought it would be a really cool idea,” the Brookfield resident said. “I’ve sold over half of my inventory, and I think programs like this are super important because you get to connect with the people in your community and learn how to be a good entrepreneur at a young age.”

And for 11-year-old Brookfield resident Alma Mata, the market was a good chance to not only showcase her talents, but also break out of her shell.

“I’ve met a lot of new people and it’s definitely teaching me social skills — I used to be really shy,” said Mata, whose sale consisted of Christmas ornaments, hot chocolate bombs and other hand-crafted chocolate novelties.

Both Heinl and Kastle said that based on the positive reception from participants and shoppers, they are hopeful in relaunching the market next year.

“To give kids the chance to experience coming up with an idea, putting in the work, having a game plan and getting to see it through as a success in real life means a lot, especially when the community is coming together,” Kastle said. “It’s been fun to see the kids set goals, work towards those goals and achieve them.”

North Riverside cops make more stolen vehicle arrests An 18-year-old Chicago woman was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of burglary tools after being arrested for misdemeanor retail theft at North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road on Nov. 4.

Priscilla Sosa remains in custody at Cook County Jail awaiting a Nov. 9 preliminary hearing at the Maybrook courthouse.

Sosa was taken into custody initially on Nov. 4 at about 6:40 p.m. for an alleged retail theft at J.C. Penney. A short time later, a North Riverside police officer on patrol at the mall spotted a Hyundai Tucson with both rear windows broken out and covered with plastic unoccupied in the west parking lot near Round One. Surveillance camera video reportedly showed Sosa park the vehicle at 5:16 p.m. and walk into the mall. During an interview following her arrest for retail theft, Sosa reportedly told police she knew the car was stolen and bought it from someone for $80 at a McDonald’s parking lot. The person who sold her the car also gave her a screwdriver to start the ignition, which had

been tampered with to steal it somewhere in Chicago on Nov. 3.

Sosa reportedly possessed the screwdriver at the time of her arrest at the mall.

A day earlier, on Nov. 3, North Riverside police charged four teenage boys, all juveniles, with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and resisting arrest after allegedly driving to the North Riverside Park Mall in a Kia Optima that had been stolen from a location in Oak Park.

When a patrol officer initially saw the vehicle parked in the east lot at about 6:30 p.m., it was unoccupied, but it was parked in a handicapped space without a placard, with its engine running and a side window broken out.

The Kia’s steering column was also peeled back and the ignition damaged.

North Riverside police have reported a number of Kia and Hyundai model vehicles stolen in the village in recent weeks by people who break rear windows to gain entry and then peel back the steering column to start the engine.

A witness described seeing four teenage boys exiting the vehicle a short time earlier.

Four teens matching that description were then seen walking back toward the Kia when police ordered them to stop.

All four were detained after allegedly attempting to run away. One of the teens reportedly had a screwdriver in his pocket. After they were booked, two of the teens were transported to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, one was transferred into the custody of Chicago police to be interviewed in connection with an open homicide case and one was released to the custody of his mother.

Auto theft in Brookfield Brookfield police say that a 2014 Jeep stolen from Freddy’s Auto Body, 9408 Ogden Ave. at about 12:20 p.m. on Nov. 4 had been left in a service bay unattended for less than five minutes when it was driven away.

An employee told police she heard the sound of something breaking and went to investigate when she observed a chain that goes across the service bay broken

and a customer’s Jeep being driven away westbound on Ogden Avenue.

The employee said the vehicle had just been moved to the service bay and had been parked there for less than five minutes with the key fob in the center console. Surveillance video showed a gold Lincoln MKX back up to a gate west of the business, Two people are seen exiting the Lincoln and walking into the west door leading to the service bay.

A short time later, one person comes back out and gets into the Lincoln which then leaves westbound on Ogden Avenue followed by the Jeep.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Oct. 31-Nov. 6, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

riminals and fraudsters often see disasters as an opportunity to take advantage of victims when they are the most vulnerable, as well as the generous taxpayers who want to help with relief efforts. The scammer contacts their possible victim by telephone, social media, email or in-person. Here are some tips to help taxpayers recognize a scam and avoid becoming a victim: Some thieves pretend they are from a charity. They do this to get money or private information from well-intentioned taxpayers. Bogus websites use names like legitimate charities. They do this scam to trick people to send money or provide personal financial information.

Scammers even claim to be working for or on behalf of the IRS. The thieves say they can help victims file casualty loss claims and get tax refunds.

Disaster victims can call the IRS toll-free disaster assistance line at 866-562-5227. Phone assistors will answer questions about tax relief or disaster-related tax issues.

Taxpayers who want to make donations can get information to help them on IRS .gov. The Tax Exempt Organization Search helps users find or verify qualified charities. Donations to these charities may be tax-deductible.

Taxpayers should always contribute by check or credit card to have a record of the taxdeductible donation if they choose to give money. Individual taxpayers can deduct up to $300 and married couples can deduct up to $600 in qualifying charitable contributions for tax year 2021, even if they don’t itemize.

Donors should not give out personal financial information to anyone who solicits a contribution.

This includes things like Social Security numbers or credit card and bank account numbers and passwords.

Brookfield Zoo dolphins make Minnesota temporary home Seven Seas habitat getting new roof, other upgrades in coming months

Brookfield Zoo’s seven bottlenose dolphins have taken up temporary residence in Minnesota and will remain there until some time next spring as repairs and other improvements are made at their Seven Seas habitat in their home zoological park.

The five female and two male dolphins ranging in age from 17 to 48 were transported to Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, a south suburb of the Twin Cities, accompanied by animal care staff and veterinarians. They arrived there on Nov. 2.

“We’ve been working with the dolphins for a couple of months [preparing for the move],” said Rita Stacey, vice president of animal programs for the Chicago Zoological Society, which operates Brookfield Zoo. “They were put in specially designed

slings and then secured in open-top transport carriers that are customdesigned for each dolphin and partially filled with water.”

The operation went smoothly, said Stacey, who has worked at Brookfield Zoo for 32 years, mainly with the marine mammals.

“All of the dolphins had been transported before and all of the females have lived [at the Minnesota Zoo] before,” Stacey said. “Spree [a 20-yearold female] was born there and was quickly zooming around, so I think she knew where she was.”

Minnesota Zoo was happy to have the dolphins as a temporary attraction in their Discovery Bay habitat, which has been without marine mammals for a decade, and Brookfield Zoo was glad to be able to keep the pod together while Seven Seas gets some much-needed work.

Opened in 1987, the Seven Seas Dolphinarium last underwent a major facelift in 2009 when its tanks were relined with Fiberglas – Tapeko, 40; Allie, 35; and Noelani, 19 all lived at the Minnesota Zoo during that project.

Over the next seven months or so, the Seven Seas habitat will get a new roof, courtesy of a $666,600 Public

Museum Capital Grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Workers will also install a new climate control system, which will allow Seven Seas to be air conditioned in the summer, and an air purification system. One of the most important aspects of the work from an animal care standpoint is the installation of a lift platform in the south habitat, which can be raised to adjust water depth if there’s a need for emergency or advanced medical care for a dolphin.

“What a wonderful enhancement for care to be given to the dolphin,” Stacey said. “It will allow us safe, easy access to animals in any emergent situation or for long-term care.”

Zoo officials did not provide a total estimate for the cost of all improvements at the Seven Seas habitat.

In addition to the dolphins themselves, Brookfield Zoo animal care staff also have relocated temporarily to Minnesota in order to care for them daily as they would here at home.

The dolphins are scheduled to participate in Dolphins in Action presentations at the Minnesota Zoo beginning later this month.

Florist to close retail shop in downtown Riverside Shamrock Garden was Village Center’s first commercial tenant

Shamrock Garden Florist has announced it will shutter its downtown Riverside storefront at 18 E. Burlington St. later this month, ending a 14-year run in the village. The store is scheduled to close Nov. 25, according to a letter sent to customers last week.

Kyle Trevoy, a co-owner of the business and the manager of its Elmhurst location, said the store’s lease was up at the end of the

month and the family was wary of entering into a long-term lease.

“We live quite a ways west, so for family to be in Riverside on a daily basis isn’t feasible for us,” said Trevoy, who operates the business in partnership with his mother and three brothers. “And finding someone to manage it is difficult to do.”

The Riverside store’s manager for the past eight years, Gaye Longeway, is considering retirement, Trevoy said. She’ll remain with the business after the Riverside store closes.

“We had to make a decision on whether we’d be staying for a while [in Riverside],” Trevoy said. “It didn’t seem right to do it.”

One of the reasons the company opened a store in downtown Riverside in the first place was that Trevoy’s late grandmother,

Susan Roney, had lived in Riverside.

“Our ties to Riverside weren’t quite the same once she was gone,” Trevoy said.

Family will continue to operate Carousel Flowers by Shamrock Garden on York Road in Elmhurst, the flagship Shamrock Garden Florist location on St. Charles Road in Lombard and the company’s newest location in far west suburban Winfield, a business the family purchased in 2019.

The flower shop’s arrival in 2008 in Riverside marked something of a new era in the village’s central business district. Three years earlier, the oldest business in the village, Pringle’s Flower Shop at 23 E. Burlington St., closed its doors after 79 years.

Shamrock Garden Florist would become the first commercial tenant to lease space in the then-new Village Center building, at

the time a controversial development. The store quickly became a downtown Riverside retail staple.

“When we went in, it was a blank space,” Trevoy said of the storefront. “It’s very bittersweet and emotional to make that decision [to close].”

With a location within 10 miles of the downtown, Trevoy said the company still plans to serve Riverside and nearby communities after the local store closes.

“Our store in Elmhurst plans to continue to service the Riverside community,” Trevoy said. “We definitely hope to maintain a presence in Riverside and the surrounding area.”

Century-old downtown Brookfield buildings get total rehab Owner gutting interior to create three storefronts, six apartments

A downtown Brookfield building that once housed the village’s post office and the postmaster’s family, is being redeveloped and will house two to three groundfloor storefronts and six second-floor apartments, its owner says.

Andy Kwak and his brother, Chester, purchased the adjacent two-story buildings at 3741-43 and 3745 Grand Blvd. plus the vacant lot at 3737 Grand Blvd. in February 2021 for $80,000 from the McCracken Family Trust.

The storefronts had most recently housed a martial arts studio, a security business and a dental office, while the second floor was a residential unit used by the former owner.

“I don’t think many people saw much potential, because there was just so much going on in here,” Andy Kwak said. “So, we just stripped everything out of here.”

The property had been listed in February 2020 at $399,900, but the interior condition put off potential buyers. After three price reductions, the Kwak brothers decided to take a chance.

“The price was right,” said Kwak, whose construction company AKC Services also recently rehabbed a mixed-use building in Summit. “It was a rehab building, plus it had a lot of potential.”

Nine apply for RBHS board vacancy, but interviews not needed School board considering just one person to fill Towner’s shoes

Next week the Riverside-Brookfield High School District 208 Board of Education will choose someone fill the vacancy on the school board created last month when Ramona Towner resigned from the school l because she moved out of the district.

The board received applications from nine people wishing to replace Towner, but school board members apparently were so impressed by one applicant that they are planning to pick that person without interviewing any of them.

“We were all collectively impressed with one of the candidates in particular, so we’re going to request that this per-

Mike Sorensen, the principal for grades three through five at Brook Park, which is in LaGrange Park and is part of BrookfieldLaGrange Park District 95, said he was happy the school received an exemplary rating for the first time.

“It’s always an honor to be recognized,” Sorensen said. “We had a very nice amount of student growth in ELA and in math. I know the staff, the students, the parents are all working very hard together to continue that upward trend.”

Sorensen said he expects a new math curriculum, called Everyday Math, imple-

Zalas said the one applicant’s experience was so compelling that the board didn’t feel the need to interview those who applied to replace Towner.

“We were comfortable with the information provided in the applications,” Zalas said. “This is a short-term duration fill, it’s only through April.”

Zalas declined to say who the board has in mind to replace Towner.

The person selected to replace Towner will be sworn in at the start of the board’s Nov. 15 meeting. Because of Thanksgiving, the board has only one meeting scheduled for November, and Towner’s replacement must be named by Dec. 1.

Although Towner was elected last year to a four-year term, the person picked by the school board will only serve until next spring’s school board election. Whoever

is elected next April will complete the remaining two years of Towner’s unexpired term. There will also be four full fourterms on the ballot next April.

Whether next week’s appointee will run to complete the unexpired two-year term, a four-year term or not at all would be up to her. Typically, those seeking appointment to vacant seats choose to run in the following election.

The Landmark obtained the names of the nine applicants through a Freedom of Information Act request.

They include a pair of educators, including Candice Gizewski, who works with autistic children and helped found ABLE Academy a school for children with special needs, and Keyla Navarrete, an educator with a background in data analysis and a scholar of racial and ethnic studies.

Also applying are a pair of former school board members –Juliet Boyd, who served for a time on the Riverside Elementary District 96 school board and Carolyn

Lach, a former member of the Komarek School District 94 Board of Education.

Former Riverside Township board member Tom Lupfer also applied, as did youth football coach Richard DeLeon and attorney Joseph Reyna. Rounding out the field of applicants were Tricia McVicker, a nurse and attorney from North Riverside who was an advocate of returning to in-person classes in 2020-21, and Beatrice Alvarez, who serves as the social media manager for Latinos United in Loce for Autism (LULA).

Last year, Boyd and Lach applied to fill a vacancy on the RBHS school that was created when Tom Jacobs resigned; neither was chosen. Lincoln School, which is located in Brookfield and part of Lyons-Brookfield School District 103, received a “commendable” rating despite only 13 percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards in ELA and just 17 percent doing so in math.

But Lincoln students did better on growth metrics, with 64 percent meeting expected growth in math and 51 percent doing so in ELA. Educators often have a complicated relationship with state-mandated tests, saying they are an imperfect and imprecise measure of learning, but they know that some people judge them on their rankings.

“If they’re going to give these honors, we’re never going to turn it down,” Sorensen said.

Veterans Circle fountain won’t be complete until next spring Brookfield holiday tree will go up in Progress Park this year

The bad news is that the fountain under construction at the Veterans Memorial Circle at Eight Corners in Brookfield will not be completed until sometime late next spring, which means the village’s holiday tree will not be placed at the site this year.

The good news is that there will still be a village tree at Eight Corners when Brookfield ushers in the holiday season when Santa Claus flips the switch to light it up on Dec. 3.

Public Works Director Carl Muell told the Landmark that the tree will be located at Progress Park – the small patch of green that sits on one of the “points” of Eight Corners west of the circle, formed by the intersection of Washington and Broadway avenues.

The unofficial park is actually owned by First National Bank of Brookfield, which gave the village permission to use it to display this year’s tree, Muell said.

According to Muell, village officials had contemplated erecting this year’s tree in Kiwanis Park or at Veterans Park, but they went with the traditional Eight Corners location once the bank gave the green light to use Progress Park.

cle broke ground in August and the underground work, including two new manholes and sewer pipe associated it, turned out to be a large project.

“Because of the geometry of the streets and sewers that enter Veterans Circle, the pipes come into the manholes at various angles, and it has resulted in a fairly large excavation,” said Village Engineer Derek Treichel.

That manhole/sewer work wrapped up in the past couple of weeks and the excavation has been backfilled. The next step, Treichel said, was for the contractor to install the underground vault, which houses the control panel and water pumps for the fountain.

As of last week, that vault was still at the manufacturer where it was being fabricated. The vault ought to be in the ground by later this month. While the fountain and its associated piping is expected to go in next month, it won’t be ready to go live until next spring, when it can be tested and the circle’s landscaping completed.

“It should be operating in May or June of 2023,” Treichel said.

The $650,000 project is being funded in part by $250,000 in state funds made available to Brookfield by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in the state’s 2019 capital bill.

The village’s share of the cost will be funded through the Eight Corners TIF District.

Brookfield’s Mold-A-Rama gets own exhibit at Museum of Science and Industry

Iconic museum souvenirs take their turn in the spotlight

Paul Jones has gone to the Museum of Science of Science and Industry so often over the last four decades to service the Mold-A-Rama machines scattered throughout the institution that he can walk the place blindfolded.

There’s the gray submarine mold near the entrance to the U-505 exhibit, the yellow baby chicks mold across from the hatchery, the green tractor by the farm exhibit, the black steam engine by the train exhibit and even a red Chicago skyline near the silver elevator.

Visitors love plunking down a few bucks to take home a warm, fresh-from-the-machine souvenir, a memory of the classic exhibits at the MSI. Little did Jones, who grew up in Brookfield and operates Mold-A-Rama out of the company’s 31st Street headquarters, ever think his machines and colorful plastic models would make for a museum exhibit all on their own.

But on Nov. 2 the Museum of Science and Industry flipped the switch on its brand-new exhibit celebrating Brookfieldbased Mold-A-Rama, featuring more than 150 models – many of which you’ve probably never seen before.

The exhibit also provides an inside look into how the models are made and there are four MoldA-Rama machines from which you can take home a souvenir – a silver robot, created especially for the Robot revolution exhibit at MSI in 2007; a green monorail originally made for the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle; a blue HMS Bounty ship, made to coincide with the release of the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty,” starring Marlon Brando; and a white angel designed to be a Christmas tree ornament.

The exhibit is located on the lower level of the east galleries in the space that formerly housed the circus exhibit.

It’ll be on display and is included with the regular price of museum admission until at least fall 2023.

It was never a goal to become an exhibit, it just morphed into something that could be an exhibit.”

Jones said MSI had approached him about a possible exhibit at least a decade ago, but he balked at the concept, which was to gather all 60 of his company’s vintage machines in one place.

“Part of the marketing plan [for Mold-A-Rama] is that we’re the first kiosk outside an exhibit. That way people start to collect them,” Jones said. “If you put them all together, the most common thing would be for someone to

just pick one. We want you to buy them all.”

But over the last five or six months, Jones has worked with museum staff to put together the Mold-A-Rama exhibit, which does include four machines producing molds for purchase. Five other machines are near other exhibits in the museum.

“I’ve been going down there [to service machines] since I was 16 and there are people I’ve gotten to know for 30, 40 years,” Jones said. “There’s a lot of family pride down there.”

While it just opened on Nov. 3, when the museum announced the Mold-A-Rama exhibit, it generated a ton of chatter on social media. Within two days, an MSI post on Facebook about the exhibit generated more than 1,300 likes, with hundreds of comments and shares.

ocal journalism is a cornerstone of democracy and a vital source of information for communities across the country, with newsrooms covering local politics, high school sports, local business openings, cultural events, and other matters that help a community remain vibrant and connected. But the industry is facing an existential crisis because of the unyielding power of Big Tech platforms such as Google and Facebook.

With less than four weeks left in this Congress, now is the time for the Senate to pass the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) (S. 673 and H.R. 1735). The JCPA was favorably reported out of committee on Sept. 22 with strong bipartisan support and now must head to the floor for a vote. The JCPA will hold tech giants accountable and provide a necessary lifeline for local papers, requiring Big Tech to compensate small and local outlets for the use of their content.

Big Tech benefits tremendously from journalism content, yet they refuse to pay local publishers fairly for the journalistic content that fuels their platforms. As a result, local papers are being replaced by tech platforms using black box algorithms designed to keep users inside their walled gardens — all while charging exorbitant ad fees — up to 70 percent of every advertising dollar.

Since 2000, U.S. newspaper circulation has dropped by half, with 31 million fewer daily newspapers in circulation in 2020. The vast majority of U.S. counties with no regular newspaper — news deserts — are in rural areas. Despite record audiences, since news outlets transitioned to digital, revenue has drastically declined.

The tech giants have built their empires by profiting off the hard work of journalists without fairly compensating them. And as local publications struggle to stay afloat, Big Tech has only doubled down on their anticompetitive practices, further consolidating their control over the flow of information.

This is fundamentally unfair, and the JCPA will bring about much-needed change. The JCPA will benefit small and

local publishers exclusively and impose severe penalties if the tech platforms do not negotiate with them in good faith. The bill has a limited scope of six years to address a broken marketplace, while the broader competitive landscape is fixed through other legislation and the courts. The JCPA also incentivizes publishers to hire more journalists and protects our Constitutional freedoms of speech and the press.

The bill’s scope is limited to compensation and does not allow for negotiations around up/down ranking or display — it serves only to ensure fair compensation for local news outlets.

News publishers around the world are being compensated by Big Tech. Australia passed a similar policy to the JCPA, the News Media Bargaining Code, for media organizations to bargain for payment, which has produced significant revenue (billions of dollars, if translated to the U.S. market) for hundreds of publications of all sizes.

The swift and clear successes of the Australian Code — and efforts in other countries such as Canada, the UK, European Union, and more — should serve to encourage the passage of the JCPA in the United States.

Thousands of hometown papers from across the political spectrum, as well as both Democrats and Republicans in Congress, support the JCPA. Moreover, in these highly polarized times, polling data found that 70 percent of Americans support the JCPA. The JCPA has such broad support because ultimately, it is about basic fairness.

Local papers cannot afford to endure several more years of Big Tech’s use and abuse, and time to take action is dwindling. If Congress does not act soon, we risk allowing social media to become America’s de facto local newspaper. The Senate must advance the JCPA to the Senate floor for a vote before the end of the year to rein in Big Tech and restore fairness to local journalism before it’s too late.

It’s always a good time to say ‘thanks’

I

t is always right and polite to say thank you.

It’s something we were taught at an early age.

However, it sometimes gets left by the wayside.

Lately, I have received some thank you notes from some people who remembered the lesson. Today’s thank you notes seem to arrive, no less heart felt I’m sure, by way of the computer. I realize that it is 2022 and “this is how we do it now,” but forgive me, I am a purist and enjoy receiving that little note handwritten on a piece of stationary or note card that I can hold on to and maybe even save.

One card lately received made note of the fact she had already sent a thanks via computer, but that she was an oldfashioned girl, so she sent a note. Thank you, you know who you are. I almost feel compelled to send you a thank you note for the thank you note.

Packages of note cards were always a safe gift to give since people used them, and it was always nice to have personalized cards to send notes or pictures of significance. Having purchased note cards for personal use, I find I didn’t always use them because I wanted to

save them, which is why I have so many blank note cards.

So, some of you should not be surprised if you receive a card from me as I clear out the inventory.

I am not chastising those of you who send thanks out by my other means. It’s what you do and at least are remembering to say thank you no matter what form.

Now here’s a sure way to get a thank you: The Riverside Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is holding its annual Aunt Diana’s Fudge Sale fundraiser.

This worthwhile organization annually gives out college scholarships and does so mainly through proceeds from the fudge sale.

Boys cross country races to first-ever RBHS team state title Marrs, O’Brien allstaters; Kallas, Gaynor improve 100+ places over 2021

As Cooper Marrs and his RiversideBrookfield High School boys cross country teammates rode the bus home after winning sectionals Oct. 29, head coach Jack Brady and assistant Arthur Stringham unveiled new uniforms for the IHSA Class 2A state meet.

Weeks earlier, the runners had selected black tops with “RBHS” in blue letters on a white sash. Stringham kept tabs that they’d arrive in time.

“Those are the coolest uniforms I’ve ever worn, and they look really clean,” Marrs, a junior, said.

Besides a new look, six returnees from last year’s state lineup arrived at Peoria’s Detweiller Park for the state finals on Oct. 5 with a new mindset and energy.

They soon added a new accomplishment.

The Bulldogs became the school’s first state champion in any sport as their 131 points prevailed by 24 points over Belvidere North.

Marrs (5th, 15:27.46 for 3.0 miles) and junior Jack O’Brien (16th, 16:00.40) earned individual, top-25 all-state honors amid sloppy conditions from earlier rains, followed by junior Will Kallas (38th, 16:24.49), senior Zack Gaynor (56th, 16:39.84), sophomore Brady Norman (69th, 16:46.96) and juniors Brennan Lester (80th, 16:46.96) and Hayden Marrs (160th, 17:35.46).

“It was just one of those feelings that I don’t think I’ll ever have again – that I probably won’t have in a long time, maybe,” O’Brien

said. “I’ve been running since I was in first grade, so to spend pretty much more than half your life and to have it pay off like this, it’s an indescribable feeling.”

The Bulldogs’ other top-three trophy was the second-place 1973 squad when the sport was one class. RBHS boys tennis has finished second and third, competitive cheerleading second and wrestling third.

“Cross country is a sport not too many people pay attention to, but the last couple of weeks RB’s been really coming together, paying attention to our results and congratulating us in the halls,” Cooper Marrs aid.

“It was nice to see the whole RB community come together,” O’Brien said. “I felt like all of the teachers knew what we were doing throughout the postseason. I was really proud to be part of something like that.”

It’s also a new feeling for Brady, who became head coach just before the 2021 season started. Brady previously coached 34 years at Glenbard East, taking fifth in 1988. He ran for Glenbard South against the 1973 Bulldogs.

“The kids stepped up, no doubt about it,” Brady said. “The weather didn’t matter. The wind didn’t matter. Actually, the whole season they’ve been pretty laser-focused on getting a trophy. It was just a matter of which one.”

The 2021 Bulldogs finished fifth overall (235) with graduated Paul Proteau taking third.

Kallas (142nd) and Gaynor (158th) improved more than 100 places as key contributors to the Bulldogs’ victory. Gaynor’s vicious kick passed about 10 runners, and Kallas returned to compete in past six weeks despite a stress fracture in his left shin that hasn’t completely healed.

“I’ve gotten used to it to the point where the season’s over so I’m good now,” Kallas said.

“I hung onto my boys. I didn’t take as many people as Zack did the last 100 [meters], but I gave everything I had,” Norman said.

O’Brien comfortably earned his first allstate honors after placing 30th in 2021. Marrs was an all-state 22nd last year, but he collapsed 10 meters from the finish before recovering.

Marrs slightly eased his finish on Oct. 5 to ensure a good place and hopeful team victory.

“That resulted in getting [passed] by two guys but that was totally fine by me. I just wanted to get as high a place as possible. And the top five, it’s great,” Marrs said.

“I’m not sure it’s sunken in yet, but I’ve got some sort of high going on right now. I don’t know how to describe it. It’s awesome.”

LTHS upsets Plainfield North, advances to state quarterfinal Lions outscore undefeated Knights 21-0 in second half

Lyons Township High School senior James Georgelos caught the swing pass from junior quarterback Ryan Jackson at the 8-yard line at Plainfield North on Nov. 4 determined to score.

Not only was this the second round of the IHSA Class 8A state football playoffs, those last, difficult yards were along the LTHS sideline whose observers included older brother Anthony and freshman brother Tommy.

“If I didn’t reach the end zone there, I’d hear about it for the rest of my life,” Georgelos said. “[Anthony], he’d be talking the entire time ‘How did you get stopped on the 1-yard line?’ I just dove for the front pylon and that’s that. I turned around and saw him.

I won’t forget that for the rest of my life.”

Georgelos’ first varsity touchdown on the final play of the third quarter completed the incredible reversal of fortune in the Lions’ 24-13 victory after trailing 13-3 at halftime.

No. 14-seed LTHS (9-2) advances to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2012 at 1 p.m. on Nov. 12 at No. 6 Loyola Academy (101), a 2021 state semifinalist which has scored 42 and 49 points in its playoff victories.

The Lions never have gotten past the state quarterfinals in five previous trips. Their first in 1978 included Georgelos’ father Andrew.

“We’re looking to make history,” Georgelos said. “We’ve come back from adversity. We were comfortable with being down because we know the best is yet to come.”

No. 3 Plainfield North (10-1) was riding its first undefeated season, but with a biting wind at their back, the Lions scored first on David Waight’s 22-yard field goal after Caleb Greer’s interception and 27-yard return to the 7.

By halftime, however, LTHS had just 65 of-

fensive yards.

“I told the guys [at halftime] we’ve been down before. This is no different. Just go out there, believe and play football. They did that,” LTHS coach Jon Beutjer said. “It was a great victory. I’m proud of our seniors and our coaching staff.”

The Lions opened the second half with a 54yard touchdown drive completed by a 17-yard pass to sophomore Travis Stamm, followed by 33- and 29-yard touchdown drives with the go-ahead score an 8-yard pass to senior Graham Smith.

A standout defensive effort allowed Plainfield North just 50 second-half yards, 28 until the Tigers’ final possession.

“I think we’re just peaking at the right time. Next week will be even better,” LTHS senior linebacker Cooper King said. “We don’t want to be done. I feel like every single person came out here in the second half and gave it their all.”

Smith and seniors Jack Falls and Danny Pasko shared two sacks. King, Smith, Pasko and Falls combined for three more tackles for

loss.

Noah Pfafflin added a leaping one-arm interception, King blocked two passes and Pasko and Jack McQueeney broke up or deflected passes.

Danny Montesano began the second half with a 25-yard kickoff return to the Lions’ 46.

Two plays after a 27-yard pass to McQueeney, Jackson found an open Stamm in the corner of the end zone. ”Honestly, that was a game-changer for us.

After that, all of the momentum was in our back pocket,” Stamm said.

After Plainfield North’s wind-affected punt. Smith scored on the far-right side of the end zone with a third-down pass he bobbled then secured while remaining inbounds.

“I don’t know how I caught it either,” Smith said.

Plainfield North went for it on fourth-and-6 at its 41, but Smith’s 12-yard sack again gave the Lions great field position.

“That’s probably the best half of football I’ve played all season,” Smith said. “It was awesome, even more fun when you win.”

Naz volleyball back to state finals after supersectional win Roadrunners begin state title defense Nov. 11 against Taylorville

With 16 losses entering this year’s IHSA Class 3A girls volleyball tournament, there weren’t many who thought defending champion Nazareth Academy would make a return trip to the state finals.

But the Roadrunners are, indeed, heading downstate for a third consecutive postseason after a 26-24, 25-20 victory over St. Viator on Nov. 4 at the Trinity Supersectional in River Forest.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to be in this match,” said Nazareth coach Melissa Masterson. “But what these girls have done, building up confidence in themselves and realizing they can do this is amazing.”

For senior Kitty Sandt, a key player on last year’s title team, heading back to Normal is very sweet.

“It’s surreal I get to do it again my senior year,” said Sandt, who had 16 assists against St. Viator. “We lost a ton of seniors who are doing well in college, but this shows how strong our team is.”

Nazareth (21-16) and St. Viator (30-10) started the match trading points. The Roadrunners opened up an 18-10 lead in the first set, but the Lions staged a furious rally and served for the set ahead 24-23.

However, junior Olivia Austin came up with back-to-back kills for Nazareth. The Roadrunners then took the set when defensive specialist Megan McNicholas served up an ace.

“In the state playoffs, runs are going to come and go,” Austin said. “But we kept our energy up and the team played for each other.”

St. Viator jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second set, but Nazareth went on an 8-1 run to take a 10-6 lead and looked poised to pull away.

The Lions ran off four consecutive points to even things at 10-10. Then after Nazareth took a 14-11 lead, Viator closed to within one at 16-15.

However, Reese Butkus gave the Roadrun-

ners some breathing room with back-to-back aces that gave Nazareth a 21-17 lead. Butkus had four aces and 11 digs for the evening.

“We’ve learned this season not to give up and to have faith and confidence in each other,” Sandt said.

When the Lions committed a hitting error on match point, the Nazareth players and coaches erupted.

“St. Viator fights; that’s a good team,” Masterson said. “We had talked about staying composed, knowing they would make a run. Reese got some huge points for us at the end.”

Lauren Salata had eight kills, Austin seven kills and Tori Sarin four kills for Nazareth.

Austin and Emily Risley each had a pair of blocks for the Roadrunners, who will meet Taylorville in an IHSA Class 3A semifinal Nov. 11 at Redbird Arena on the Illinois State University campus. Match time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

“We’re so grateful to be heading back,” said Austin. “We’ve worked all season for this. We had a tough schedule and faced some challenges, but we overcame them.”
