Riders traveling from Fare Zone 2 to downtown Chicago will pay $3.75 for oneway tickets and $75 for monthly passes. For example, that represents roughly a 12% decrease for one-way Oak Park riders, and a 25% decrease for monthly ones.

Congress Park riders traveling toward the Loop will pay $5.50 for one-way tickets and $110 for monthly passes. In other words, they will pay the same for one-way tickets and $10 more for monthlies.

In a major change, the fare for any trips that don’t start or end at any of the downtown terminals will be the same regardless of distance, or $3.75 for one-way trips and $75 for monthly passes. This represents a decrease even for riders who travel short distances. For example, a one-way trip between River Forest and Oak Park now costs $4.

The new fare policy will eliminate $6 unlimited ride day pass that’s good for up to three fare zone and the $10 day pass that’s good system-wide. It will be replaced with a zone-based pass with a value that will increase the farther one travels from the Loop.

Riders within Growing Community Media coverage area who use the $6 pass will need to pay $7.50, and riders who use a $10day pass will need to pay between $7.50 and $13.50 if they are traveling to and/or from the Loop. They’ll pay $7.50 if they want to travel elsewhere in the system.

While both of the current day passes can only be purchased on Ventra app, the new Day Pass will be available in physical form, as well.

But in perhaps the most dramatic change, the 10-Ride tickets, which allow riders to take 10 trips for a price of nine, will be going away. It will be replaced by a Ventra-only “Day Pass Five Pack,” which will allow riders to buy five, one-day passes for the price of 9.5 monthly tickets. Since the price of one-way tickets is decreasing, that still represents a decrease for riders who use 10-rides for round trips in the newly minted Fare Zone 2.

Aaron Maertins, Metra’s director of operations, planning and project management, told the Metra board last Friday that

they wanted to move away from tickets that are “trip-limited” and toward those that are “time-limited.” And he noted that when the trains are crowded, it’s easy for conductors to forget to hole-punch paper tickets or swipe digital ones during those trips.

Riders who buy five-packs will be able to share passes within the pack with other riders, similar to how 10-ride ticket holders can use it to pay for their companions’ fares.

Riders who board at stations that either have ticket agents or ticket vending machines now pay a $5 surcharge if they buy a ticket on the train. Maertins said that Metra will be “suspending the surcharge for the time being” to make it easier for riders to adjust to the new fare policies. He did not specify how long that would be.

A man was arrested last Thursday after leading police on a high-speed chase in a white Nissan near 5th Avenue in Chicago.

The man was driving at about 100 mph in a 35 mph zone and refused to stop when police activated their emergency lights and siren.

He ran through several stop signs and drove over a front lawn before turning into the driveway of 2121 Wolf Rd. North Riverside police searched his vehicle and found a folded dollar bill with a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine.

Police also learned that his license was suspended and that the man had no insurance. He refused to speak or provide a breath or urine sample.

The driver was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, possession of a controlled substance, DUI, driving while license suspended, aggravated speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations.

He was released on a pretrial release form and is scheduled to appear in court at the end of November.

Thefts back-to-back at North Riverside’s Kohl’s

A man was arrested for stealing clothes and fragrances from Kohl’s Department Store in North Riverside last Tuesday.

The man and another accomplice were spotted by a loss prevention agent who saw them concealing merchandise and leaving the store without paying.

The police arrived and chased the suspects, who ran away.

The police caught one of the men, who had five stolen items worth $554.70, but the other man escaped.

The loss prevention agent signed complaints for retail theft.

The man was charged with a misdemeanor and is scheduled to appear in court in December.

On Monday, another man was arrested for stealing two FitBit watches from Kohl’s.

The man, who wore a brown trench coat and a blue backpack, hid the watches in his backpack and left the store without paying.

The watches were worth $399.98.

The police found the man near a dumpster and took him into custody.

They recovered the watch from his backpack.

The man was charged with a misdemeanor and released on pretrial release.

He was given a ride to the blueline in Forest Park.

Brookfield Library declines to host discussion about Gaza war

Kimberly Vallera said she intended to create a discussion to teach people about the issues

After the war in Gaza broke out, Brookfield resident Katherine Vallera was upset because she felt that the Palestinian viewpoint was not being heard. She decided to put together a panel to educate the community about the wider issues behind the fighting.

Vallera then reached out to staff at the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library about hosting the panel in the library’s basement public meeting room Oct. 29. She called her event Pathways to Peace.

But just six days before Vallera planned to have the event, Library Executive Director Kimberly Coughran told Vallera that

the library would not host the event due to safety concerns.

“In these completely divided times we find ourselves in, we simply are not willing to risk the safety of any of our staff members nor the safety of those in the community who might attend,” Coughran wrote to Vallera in an email sent Oct. 23.

In her email, Coughran said that she hoped Vallera could find another location for her event.

In general, the library meeting room is available free of charge to non-profit community groups and residents wishing to hold events there, subject to availability.

The move comes as the area grapples with how to talk about the complex, divisive issue.

Vallera, who spent a week on the West Bank in 2018, had organized a panel that would have featured three people: one from the group American Muslims for Palestine, another from Bright Stars over Bethlehem, a Christian focused group that raises money to support a university on the West Bank, and a third who is member of the group Jewish Voice for Peace.

“We have a very diverse panel,” Vallera said.

Despite her intent, Vallera’s panel did not have much ideological diversity. On its website, Jewish Voice for Peace identifies itself as “the largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world.”

As an anti-Zionist organization, Jewish Voice for Peace does not believe there

should be a Jewish state. Some believe it is an anti-Semitic group. The Landmark asked Vallera if she had reached out to any pro-Israel groups.

“I don’t know where to go to find pro-Israel that is also pro-peace, diplomatic solution,” Vallera said.

Vallera said that she intended to feature a discussion in which people could learn about the situation in Gaza, Palestine and Israel, including basic facts. She said that she favors a peaceful, diplomatic solution to the war in Gaza.

“I wanted to create, like, a safe space where people can come and ask questions and get answers,” Vallera said.

Beloved library circulation assistant dies of a heart attack

A beloved employee of the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library died Thursday after suffering a heart attack while he was at work at the library.

Circulation assistant Arthur Williams, 52, was working in the book return work room when he had a heart attack at about 1 p.m.

He was transported to Loyola Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The library closed early at 6 p.m. Thursday and was closed Friday as his coworkers struggled to cope with William’s sudden death.

On Friday morning, library employees met at the library to share memories of their beloved co-worker. Grief therapists will be on hand at the library Saturday morning for staff to meet with before the library opens at 10 a.m.

“Everyone is pretty shaken up,” said Kimberly Coughran, the Executive Director of the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library.

Williams, who had worked at Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library since 2018, was popular with his co-workers and library patrons. He was known for his ever-present smile and easy laugh.

“He was just such a bright light,” said Susan Casey, a former youth services librarian at the library. “We all loved him.”

Williams loved to talk to patrons and patrons would often look for him when they came to the library.

“He talked to people when they checked out books,” Casey said. “He had just the kindest heart. He was someone you would want to be the face of the library, period.”

Williams’s jovial presence boosted his coworkers spirits when they were having bad days. Williams never seemed to have a bad day and always had a sunny disposition and a ready smile.

He was especially popular with senior citizens.

“They loved him,” Casey said.

ARTHUR WILLIAMS Williams was known by his co-workers for his healthy eating, always munching on radishes and carrots and drinking green tea. He was passionate about food and often exchanged recipes with co-workers and library patrons.

“Healthiest person I know, chopping vegetables in our staff break room every day,” Coughran, said in a text message.

Williams enjoyed watching television crime dramas, such as “Criminal Minds,” and was a fan of the singer Luther Vandross.

Williams, who lived in Maywood, had worked in libraries for much of his entire adult life. Before coming to the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library, he had worked at the Maywood one for more than 20 years and also had worked for the Bellwood Public Library.

“Arthur could not help but shine,” Coughran wrote in an email she sent notifying library staff and supporters about Williams’s death. “He loved libraries and much like many of us, it was the only work he knew. And as we all know, he loved being forefront and served Brookfielders and others with incredible enthusiasm.”

Coughran was not at the library when Williams died because she was in Springfield where State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid had a proclamation approved honoring Dianne Duner, the long-serving member of the board of the Brookfield Library who died earlier this year.

St. Mary’s priest made whole after being scammed

Deacon leads effort to raise fund for St. Mary’s priest who was scammed

An 85-year-old retired priest who still conducts one mass a week at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Riverside was recently scammed out of the $61,800 life savings.

But a fundraising campaign started by a deacon at St. Mary’s has fully recouped the priest’s loss.

In August, the Rev. Robert Banzin, known as Father Bob, the former associate pastor at St. Mary’s, received an email from who he thought was PayPal telling him that there was a $699 charge on his account from eBay. Knowing that that was incorrect — Banzin had never bought anything on eBay — he searched online and found a telephone number purported to be for PayPal support. He called the number and was told that they were investigators and would put him in touch with investigators from PayPal. They said that Banzin’s account had been hacked and that they would get the $699 back.

After working with three people for about a week, they managed to get Benzin to wire them money from his Citibank account. They finally were able to convince Banzin to empty his bank account and send them all the money left in the account as a wire transfer.

“They were very friendly and very concerned and said that the goal was to save my money from the hackers,” Banzin said.

But a few days later, Banzin when the money was not put back into his account as promised, Banzin realized that he had been tricked. He called Citibank, but couldn’t stop any of the wire transfers that had been made.

Banzin, who lives in a condominium in the Uptown, contacted the Chicago Police Department. Police officers interviewed Banzin at his home, but said that there was little likelihood that they could get his money back.

“I really got angry at myself for falling into this,” Banzin said.

But the financial crimes investigators from CPD told Banzin that scams like this

Banzin relies on his savings to supplement his Social Security payments and the small pension that he receives from the Archdiocese of Chicago. He drives a 2003 Mercury Couger.

“It seems to be on its last legs, so I was always worried if something actually happens, I would have to fix it or get a new car,” Banzin said.

This fall, Randy Belice, a lay deacon at St. Mary’s, noticed that Banzin seemed to be out of sorts and not his usual self. After Belice found out that Banzin had been scammed, he and his wife, Paula Jo, started a GoFundMe site to raise money for Banzin to at least allow him to pay his property taxes and perhaps get new tires for his car.

“It was devastating, heartbreaking,” Belice told the Landmark. “The idea was to get him back to some financial stability.”

Belice started the GoFundMe site in midOctober. Then an intern at Channel 7 news spotted it and arranged for Banzin to be interviewed by Channel 7 reporter Sarah Schulte. His story went viral.

Media stories drew attention nationwide. Donations to the GoFundMe site poured in and the site had raised $63,594 by the time Belice decided to stop taking donations on the afternoon of Nov.1.

“That just happened, by the grace of God, I would say,” Belice said.

Brookfield’s sustainability focus

B

rookfield is actively connecting the dots on sustainability. And it is impressive to watch.

For too long, and in most places, towns and villages have approached sustainability as a series of one-offs. Recycling. Composting. Water waste.

Lead pipes. Biking and transit. Electrification.

And our thanks to those who have championed those important issues over the decades. The reality is that citizen initiatives, volunteer driven, have almost always pushed local governments into action, into modifying waste-hauling contracts, into rethinking just laying down asphalt, and toward Complete Streets that welcome bikers and safeguard pedestrians.

Now as the Earth accelerates toward great and imminent peril, we see an alliance between local government and local climate activists reflecting the realization that, while national and international action is critical, decisive and intentional local action is just as necessary.

Brookfield’s conservation commission has been working toward a draft of a thorough-going sustainability plan for the village. Certainly it builds off steps the village has already taken. But the group is consciously borrowing from efforts in other communities and also the Cross-Community Climate Collaborative (C4), which is an alliance of near-west suburbs and a template offered by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, a regional initiative.

Also good to hear from Bridget Jakubiak, chair of the conservation commission, that her group is stocked with local volunteers who are expert in many aspects of the conservation conversation. Some have professions that intersect with these potent issues; others just bring life experience that focuses on these complex and intersecting issues.

Brookfield is filled with citizens like these who want to volunteer their talents and knowledge. And the village is getting better and more receptive to that input.

A draft plan is being circulated. A final version will go soon to the village board for input and approval.

This is all good.

The light of Arthur Williams

“Arthur could not help but shine.” That’s the quote from Kimberly Coughran, executive director of Brookfield’s public library, after the sudden death of Arthur Williams, the much loved and front-facing circulation assistant at the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library.

Mr. Williams, 52, suffered a heart attack while at work on Nov. 9. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Loyola Medical Center.

Arthur was the lead person at the library’s check-out desk and an always positive and welcoming presence, both to library patrons and his colleagues on staff.

“He just had the kindest heart. He was someone you would want to be the face of the library, period,” said a shaken Coughran. A reflection of his impact on the institution is that the library closed early last Thursday and remained closed on Friday as staff gathered to mourn and remember their colleague.

Our sympathy to all who knew Mr. Williams and grew within his light.

Patrick Benjamin, 61 Patrick Dean Benjamin, 61, of Brookfield, died on Oct. 16, 2023.

Born in 1961, in Oak Park, to David Fisher and Virginia Ruth Benjamin, he was a graduate of Glenbard East PATRICK BENJAMIN High School in 1979 and earned his Bachelor of Science from Western Illinois University in 1983. A dedicated Republican, he was the founder and first chairman of the York Township Teen Age Republicans (TARs). He volunteered for multiple presidential campaigns, including the Reagan/Bush campaign in 1984, and later held numerous positions in the Central DuPage Young Republicans. He worked for the DuPage County Health Department and spent nearly 30 years at the village of La Grange as the director of Community Development, working to revitalize La Grange’s historic downtown, with many restaurants and small businesses.

He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially when it involved sporting events (Chicago Bears and NASCAR), camping, and live music.

Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Catherine, and his Brittany Spaniels, Sadie “Ruth” and Miakoda. He is survived by his siblings, Sue Bobek, Mike Benjamin, Barb (Roger) Nystedt, and Kevin Benjamin; his stepson, Matthew (Gabriela) Lettiere; his step-grandchildren, Gwen and Charlie Lettiere; his nieces, Julie Skinkle, Cindy (Dave) Hornik, Debbie Hays, and Yazmin Nystedt; his nephews, Roger (Nikki) Nystedt Jr., Nathaniel Nystedt, and Francis David (Jason) Benjamin; and his Brittany Spaniel, Irie, who misses Pat dearly.

He was also the friend of Lewis “Louie” Paul for over 50 years and leaves behind friends in many places, including high school buddies, Lambda Chi Alpha

fraternity brothers, those he had the privilege of working with at the village of La Grange, and the many close friends he met through various social events.

The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and technicians at Loyola Medical Center ER and MICU for their care and support. One staff member in particular, a Loyola Medical student by the name of Will, was amazing in ensuring that the family was supported throughout Patrick’s time in the hospital.

She enjoyed her home and flower gardens and loved animals, especially her three cats who brought so much joy to her life. She attended daily Mass throughout her life and was very involved with St. Barbara Church, working in the sacristy for many years and leading the rosary every morning after Mass during the week.

She had a deep and lasting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was a longtime member of the women’s club.

Carol was the daughter of the late William J. and Blanche J. Weber; the sister of Dolores (the late Victor) Mattern and the late Donald Weber; the aunt of William (Meagan) Mattern and Julie (Julia) Mattern; and the great-aunt of Emma Mattern.

Visitation was held on Nov. 12 at Johnson-Nosek Funeral Home, 3847 Prairie Ave., Brookfield. The funeral Mass was celebrated on Nov. 13 at St. Barbara Church in Brookfield, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

“You always want a little bit more, but she did a great job. I’m very proud of her,” Laurich said.

“With juniors being recruited [by colleges], that’s a whole different scenario that she’s never head to deal with. She missed a couple of meets that were important, but she did the work. I thought we were in a good place. It was just convincing her to believe we were in a good place.”

“He’s definitely been helpful through the entire season just keeping me motivated, always being there for me, [saying], ‘You’re going to be fine,’” Vlcek said.

As the Bulldogs’ only state qualifier, Vlcek had RBHS girls and boys there for support and other swimmers she knows from club competition. She sat with Lyons Township qualifiers Friday and state champion Rosary on Saturday.

Vlcek had two other factors in her favor — state experience and a great sectional.

Both qualifying times were then school records (1:51.18 and 51.82).

“I think that, going into sectionals and state, [it helped] getting into a mindset like, ‘OK. This is it. We get to go and race now,’”

she said. “Sectionals was definitely a big help. Just having the experience of the last two years, to know what’s going to happen, know what to expect going into the state meet, no surprises.”

Last season, she was 17th at state in the 500 free (5:08.60) but switched back this season to the 100 free, where she was 20th in 2021 (52.59) as well as 13th in the 200 free in a then-school record 1:52.71.

Vlcek was happy Saturday to see her club teammate, Rosary junior Becky Rentz, win the 200 free (1:47.47). Reaching the 100 free finals truly was an accomplishment. Last year’s winning time of 50.42 would have tied for fourth Saturday.

“The 100 free was really fast this year,” Vlcek said.

She painted her fingernails light blue in honor of the Bulldogs with a lightning bolt. She wore a new black speed suit with gold trim to bead water better and cut time.

“I wanted to wear a new suit. I was hoping to wear a colored suit, but it was just whatever I had at my house,” she said.

“Next year, I’ll try to go with the colored suit. I think it’s more fun.”

“We’re all under that same we-want-to-win mentality that Coach Mack has talked about a lot,” Organ said. “He’s pushed us hard at practice and to work really hard to hopefully see it pay off in games. We’re going to play hard every day to get better and put that toward our season.”

Senior guard Elin O’Brien knows the excitement of being part of outstanding Lyons Township High School girls basketball teams the past two seasons.

She also knows the hard work required for that to continue.

“I feel like it kind of sets the precedent that we’ve been really good the past few years,” O’Brien said. “I think it’s a good motivator.

We want to have a good season and for the years to come.”

Once again, the Lions have graduated outstanding players, but they also have a solid corps determined to build upon two consecutive 28-win seasons, Class 4A regional championships and West Suburban Conference Silver Division titles with perfect 12-0 records.

Ezike already has garnered Division I college interest from more than 20 schools and was among roughly 25 high-school players invited to try out for the U.S. women’s national team in the spring.

“She’s really made a name for herself and she has so much more room to grow. The ceiling is so high and it’ll be fun to watch her the next two years,” Hutchens said.

Ezike had several double-doubles last season, averaging 11.2 points and 6.9 rebounds with 23 blocked shots. Her ability to drive from the top of the key was impressive.

“I’ve worked a lot on my ball handling and downhill work and also reading the offense and defense. I think I’ll be able to contribute to the team being able to know how tough games go,” Ezike said.

Wanless averaged 5.8 points and 6.4 rebounds with 70 assists and continually re-

cent shooting percentage. She came one three from tying the school’s single-season mark held by 2021 graduate Lindsey Hahn.

Mezan (3.8 ppg with 20 threes, 1.6 rpg) will continue the quick and scrappy play up top.

Emma O’Brien (3.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 54 assists) keeps improving her ability to score inside and outside.

“Overall, it’s just a mixture of youth and mature players,” Hutchens said. “The door is open for whoever steps up and kind of demands that playing time. I’m excited to see how we grow and what happens with our bench.”

Before the Whitney Young loss, the Lions had won 14 straight and back-to-back regionals for the first time since 2004-05. Before that, LTHS won 11 straight regionals from 1989-99.

“Success isn’t just based off how we do.

It’s how we’re connected as a team,” Wanless said. “I feel like winning conference again would be a huge success and state would be incredible if we got there.”
