Former top cop to head RBHS security Lane Niemann takes over as school safety liaison in January By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

Come January, Riverside-Brookfield High School will have a new employee, and he will be carrying a gun. On Dec. 12 the District 208 Board of Education voted 6-0 to hire former North Riverside Police Chief Lane Niemann for the newly created position of school safety liaison. Niemann will begin work at the start of the second semester, Jan. 8. He will work during the school day and will be paid $45,000 a year. The school board and administration had been exploring the idea of having a police officer stationed at the school, but when Niemann announced he was retiring from his position as police chief in North Riverside at the end of November, the board and administration decided to hire him. Niemann interviewed with the school board in November. “We are the only school in the area that doesn’t have police or off-duty police onsite in regards to high school,” said District 208 Superintendent Kevin Skinkis. When it came time to hire a new athletic director, officially known as the assistant principal for athletics, Riverside-Brookfield High School officials decided to turn to one of their own. On Dec. 12, the District 208 school board voted 6-0 to hire RBHS head football coach Brendan Curtin as the school’s next assistant principal for athletics, effective July 1, 2018. Curtin, a 1991 graduate of RBHS, will continue as head varsity football coach next year, and perhaps beyond, as he takes on the time-consuming job of athletic director. “At this point in time we’re taking it one year at a time,” said District 208 Superintendent Kevin Skinkis of Curtin continuing as head football coach. After doing both jobs next year, Curtin will decide if it’s feasible to continue the dual role. Curtin has rejuvenated the RBHS football program since coming to the school in 2012. After winning just three games in his first two seasons, Curtin has turned the football program around, making it a consistent winner. He has led the team to four consecutive state playoffs berths. Three of those seasons ended with first-round playoff losses, but in 2015 the football team advanced to the quarterfinals in the Class 6A tournament and finished with a 10-2 record. Over the last three seasons, the football team has a record of 25-7, and the Bulldogs are 34-26 in Curtin’s six seasons at the helm. Curtin also is respected among parents and players. Coaching and being an athletic director at the same time is very rare at larger public high schools these days although Otto Zeman, who coached Curtin at RBHS, did it for many years at RBHS. Curtin sounds like he would like to keep coaching football for as long as he can. “An important part of leading coaches is to continue to be a coach,” Curtin said. “I believe the shared experience makes me a credible resource for the coaching staff and will help keep me tied closely to the needs of the athletic programs.” Curtin will be paid $100,000 as assistant principal for athletics and will receive an additional $9,283 stipend to serve as head football coach. As athletic director, Curtin will be responsible for overseeing 27 varsity sports, including competitive cheerleading and pom pons. “I’m fully aware of the responsibilities I’m

CURTIN CALL: New Riverside-Brookfield High School athletic director Brendan Curtin calls the job “the position that I’ve aspired to for years.” He will continue to coach football next fall in addition to overseeing the school’s 27 varsity sports. about to assume,” Curtin said. Getting the athletic director job was a dream for Curtin, who grew up on Rockefeller Avenue in the Hollywood section of Brookfield, just a couple of blocks from the RBHS football stadium. “I believe that this is the place for me. This is the position that I’ve aspired to for years,” Curtin said. “It’s been a professional goal of mine to attain this position.” For the past 2-plus years, the RBHS athletic department has been led by co-interim athletic directors, Tom Domin and John Treiber who had each just retired after long careers in high school athletics. They were selected to replace Art Ostrow, who left RBHS in 2015 to become the athletic director at Hinsdale South High School. Curtin just completed a master’s degree in educational leadership from Aurora University. He has a bachelor’s degree from St. Xavier University. He serves as the instructional coach for the Wellness and Fine Arts departments at RBHS. A hiring committee, which included school board member John Keen, interviewed seven candidates. Curtin was the only candidate to receive a second interview with the school board. Before coming to RBHS Curtin, 45, was an assistant football coach at Nazareth Academy for 16 years, the last 15 of which as

offensive coordinator for the varsity team. For his last three years at Nazareth, Curtin also served as the school’s assistant athletic director. Curtin received a strong recommendation from Nazareth’s athletic director, Duane Buturusis. “He was superb,” said Buturusis who taught and coached for 14 years at RBHS in the 1970s and 1980s. “He’ll be efficient, very collegial. I’m convinced that Brendan will be very successful in this role.”

A Mokena man who claimed to be aiding police in a high-speed chase of imaginary vehicles on Dec. 14 faces felony fleeing and eluding charges after eliciting complaints of erratic, high-speed driving in Riverside, Countryside and Burr Ridge. A Riverside police officer attempted to stop the driver, identified as Martin J. Fridrich, 40, of a vehicle that was clocked at 67 mph in a 25 mph zone on Woodside Road at about 4:10 a.m. At the time, the car had its hazard lights flashing and displayed an oscillating strobe light from inside the vehicle. Earlier that morning, according to police, Countryside police had sent out an alert about a similar vehicle, which had fled from them. Riverside police were unable to curb the vehicle, which eventually fled east on East Burlington Street and then south on Harlem Avenue before entering I-55, where the Riverside officer terminated the chase. Later on Dec. 14, Burr Ridge police apprehended the driver of a vehicle causing a disturbance in that village. He reportedly admitted to be being in Riverside earlier in the day, but told police he was working with police and chasing people who had been harassing him. Police said there were no vehicles on the roadways where he claimed to be trying to stop them. In addition to charging Fridrich with aggravated fleeing and eluding, Riverside police cited him for several traffic offenses. He was also charged by Burr Ridge and Countryside police. According to Riverside police, charges for impersonating a police officer are pending against him. At the time of his arrest, Fridrich was staying in a Burr Ridge hotel, according to police.

Windows shot out with BBs Brookfield police responded to three incidents last week in which someone fired a BB-type gun at windows of homes and one vehicle, shattering them. On Dec. 14, a resident of the 4300 block of Deyo Avenue called police at about 8 p.m. after learning that two passenger-side windows of her vehicle, which was parked on Shields Avenue had been broken when they were hit with BBs or pellets. About a half-hour later, police responded to a residence in the 4400 block of Elm Avenue after a resident reported that the front picture window of her home had been damaged by two projectiles. On Dec. 17, a resident of the 4500 block of Oak Avenue called police to report that between 11 a.m. and 3:40 p.m., someone fired at least four BBs at the front window of her residence. Police found three holes in the glass and an indentation above the window.

A white U-Haul rental van is believed to be involved in that incident.

Cops: Teen robbed in driveway A 13-year-old girl told police that she was robbed of her cellphone at gunpoint while sitting in a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in the 2200 block of 15th Avenue on Dec. 7 at about 8:20 p.m. According to the police report, the girl’s mother parked in the driveway and went into the residence while the girl remained in the still-running vehicle. Two men with their faces covered and wearing all black approached each side of the vehicle and opened the doors, the victim reported to police. One of the men reportedly displayed a handgun and stated, “Give me that,” pointing to her cellphone. The two men fled on foot after one of them accidentally hit the vehicle’s horn. The victim’s iPhone reportedly was worth $600. Police were unable to locate any suspects.

Vehicle break-ins North Riverside police reported that someone broke into eight unlocked vehicles parked overnight on Dec. 5-6 in the 2200 block of Westover Avenue, the 2300 block of Westover Avenue, the 2300 block of Burr Oak Avenue and the 2300 block of Northgate Avenue. Among the items taken were purses, wallets, cash, sunglasses, a flashlight, tools and a GPS unit. Police reported that credit cards stolen from the vehicles were also used at businesses in Berwyn and Cicero.

Drugged driving Riverside police charged a 25-year-old Bridgeview man with driving under the influence of drugs after an officer stopped his vehicle, which was going 5 mph with no headlights on Dec. 18 at 3 a.m. on Barrypoint Road. The driver reportedly told police he’d downed an entire bottle of an over-the-counter cough syrup containing dextromethorphan (DMX) to get high. Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said it was the first time a Riverside officer made a drugged driving arrest for cough syrup. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Dec. 6-Dec. 17, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Fundraiser for Riverside cop diagnosed with cancer Chris Kudla, still working full-time, starts treatment soon

By BOB UPHUES Editor

Back in March, Chris Kudla’s career was back on track. After a couple of years working as a police officer in far southwest suburban Montgomery, he’d landed a job as a police officer in Riverside. It was a homecoming of sorts for the 46-yearold Kudla. He’d started his law enforcement career – at the age of 31 – as a patrolman in Lyons, after being urged to switch careers by his younger brother, David, who was and remains a police officer in Brookfield. Kudla’s family had lived in Brookfield at the time he was born, moving shortly afterwards to Mokena, where he grew up, attending Providence Catholic High School before starting a 13-year career in the waste hauling business, first with Waste Management and then Groot Industries. But around Thanksgiving, he felt a lump near his collarbone. He went in for some tests and on Nov. 25, a day before his birthday, he got the news. Kudla had a 9-centimeter tumor on his kidney. The diagnosis is Stage 4 renal cancer, which also has spread to his lymph nodes. “The fact is,” said Kudla, “the cancer I have

lows,” said Kudla. “There’s a burst of good news, then something happens where there’s a setback. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster.” On Dec. 14, Kudla’s sister, Alyceson, created a Gofundme fundraising campaign (www. gofundme.com/believe-chris-kudlas-medicalfund) to raise money to help cover medical expenses that are still trying to be determined. The fundraising goal is set at $100,000, and as of the morning Dec. 19, more than 200 people – from family members and fellow police officers to village officials in both Riverside and Brookfield -- had donated more than $21,000. “All the support we’ve been getting, that helps,” said David Kudla. “You find out you’re not alone in this.” But from her job working for a clinical research and pharmaceutical development firm, Alyceson Kudla knows it’s going to be expensive. “Treatment is going to be expensive; just the medication alone, and that doesn’t include the body scans every two months,” she said. While Chris Kudla is insured through the village of Riverside, his until-now clean health history led him to choose a less ex-

pensive HMO plan. He tried to switch it to the PPO plan shortly after his diagnosis, but missed the cut-off by a couple of days. As a result, he said, his treatment is through out-of-network providers, driving up costs. Right now, Kudla remains working his regular 3 to 11 p.m. shift for the Riverside Police department. He’s pain free and hasn’t experienced any other symptoms. But, he starts treatment, at this time an oral medication, on Dec. 18. He has no idea what the side effects are going to be or how long he’ll be able to work full time. “I’m still trying to figure out how to work through this,” Kudla said. “As long as I’m able to tolerate the side effects, I can work.” Meanwhile, said Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel, Kudla’s colleagues are trying to see whether they can donate the proceeds of their own sick days and vacation time to him. It’s the first time Weitzel can remember an active-duty Riverside police officer being stricken with such a serious illness. “I really couldn’t believe it when he first came in to see me,” Weitzel said. “In a small department like this, where you know people personally, it’s like a family.”

With new police chief come changes in North Riverside Two promoted to deputy chief; sharper focus on presence at Komarek By BOB UPHUES Editor

The retirement of North Riverside Police Chief Lane Niemann at the end November set in motion a series of promotions that has altered the command structure of the department and reflects the priorities of the new chief, Deborah Garcia, the village’s first female top cop. “Society is changing and growing,” said Garcia, who is in her 30th year as a North Riverside police officer and for the past four-plus years has served as deputy chief. “Police have to change, too.” Garcia and other top police officers officially were sworn into their new positions at the North Riverside Village Board’s Dec. 11 meeting. The new chief said the changes she’s making will help North Riverside police respond to the public’s growing call for more information. “I think society is demanding transparency. I get it,” Garcia said. “Modern technology and things like Facebook and Twitter are really important to the public. Part of the goal is to become more accessible to the community through modern technology. “The public demands to know what’s going on.” One change in particular, said Garcia, will be a more visible presence at Komarek School, where Officer Maegan Ehrenberg will make daily visits in order to create stronger bonds between police, parents and students. “School is the No. 1 priority,” Garcia said. “I want a face with the police department they

can reach out to.” In addition to Garcia, who took over the chief ’s office on Dec. 1, two men were appointed as deputy police chiefs – another first for the village. Christian Ehrenberg and Carlos Garcia, both of whom previously held the rank of commander, will share duties as co-deputy chiefs. Meanwhile, Sgt. Dion Bobo assumed the rank of commander. Deborah Garcia said that Carlos Garcia, her husband for more than decade, will supervise field operations of the department, directing the patrol division, investigations and records. Niemann effectively set the stage for the new dual-deputy arrangement when he promoted Carlos Garcia to commander in June. At the time, Niemann said a second commander “balances out the chain of command in the department.” Carlos Garcia joined the North Riverside Police Department in 2002 from the Brookfield Zoo Police Department, which has served as a training ground for many top police officers in the area, including Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel, Lyons Deputy Police Chief Matthew Buckley and former North Riverside Police Chief Anthony Garvey. Garcia became a police officer after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Carlos Garcia’s military training will be a benefit in his role directing operations, said the chief. “He’s very good at the people end of it,” she said. As far as Deborah Garcia directly overseeing her husband, both said they have been

STEPPING UP: Deborah Garcia was sworn into her new role as North Riverside police chief on Dec. 11, along with a host of other officers who were promoted in the wake for former chief Lane Niemann’s retirement. Garcia, a 30-year veteran, is the department’s first female police chief. able to successfully separate work life from their relationship as husband and wife. Most recently Carlos Garcia has served as the department’s principal detective, focusing most of his attention on investigations, while Deborah Garcia has been more involved with patrol operations. “We’ve worked together throughout my career, and it’s never been a problem,” Carlos Garcia said. “She was in patrol and I was in investigations, so we kind of veered in two directions.” Deborah Garcia said that had she retained her maiden name, most people working with the department would not even know the two were related. “Both of us are very professional,” she said. “Honestly, I think our work ethic and reputations speak for themselves.” Sgt. Kyle Pinelli, who was promoted to that rank in November, will assume the role of chief investigator. William Cinkay, who was

promoted to sergeant on Dec. 11, will assume supervision of the midnight patrol shift. Ehrenberg, who was promoted to commander in 2013, will focus his efforts on administrative support systems and oversee the implementation of the West Suburban Consolidated Communications (WC3) central dispatch center, which will be located inside the North Riverside police station. He will also assist the chief with budgeting and will handle payroll. Ehrenberg has been with the North Riverside Police Department for 22 years. Finally, Sgt. Dion Bobo, who began his career with the North Riverside Police Department on the same day as Deborah Garcia, assumes the role of commander. He will serve as the direct supervisor of the department’s patrol sergeants and will be in charge of scheduling and mandatory training. He will remain the head of the juvenile division and oversee court records.

Small committee to handle war memorial upgrade Ad hoc group expected to take ‘minimalist approach’

By BOB UPHUES Editor

A firm hired as a consultant to the Riverside Landscape Advisory Commission won’t be involved in designing future improvements to the veterans’ memorial in Guthrie Park, Village President Ben Sells announced on Dec. 14, reversing an earlier directive from the board in November. During the summer, Living Habitats, which was brought on by the Landscape Advisory Commission in 2016 to help plan the restoration of Swan Pond Park, delivered three options for improving the war memorial in

Guthrie Park. While two of the plans kept the memorial in the park, members of the Landscape Advisory Commission chose a third option – moving the memorial to an area in front of the Riverside Township Hall. Members of Riverside American Legion Post 488, which has donated $5,000 toward improving the nearly century-old memorial and is in line for $2,000 more in grant funding from the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission, objected to the move. The village board in November agreed to keep the memorial in Guthrie Park and recommended Living Habitats work with the

Landscape Advisory Commission on a new design, which would keep the memorial in its present location. Now, however, the plan for improving the existing memorial has fallen to a small committee that includes Landscape Advisory Commission Chairwoman Cathy Maloney, Riverside Public Works Director Edward Bailey and Village Trustee Scott Lumsden. Both Lumsden and Bailey are veterans of the Armed Forces, and Lumsden in particular advocated for leaving the memorial in Guthrie Park and keeping improvements to a minimum. “I’m seeing a very minimalist approach to changes to the veterans’ memorial,” said

Bailey. Those changes likely will include stabilizing the heavy boulders that hold plaques inscribed with the names of Riverside’s war dead, improving landscaping and painting the flag pole. While there is no official deadline for making the improvements, the goal appears to be getting the improvements done in time for Memorial Day in 2018. The war memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1921, to honor three Riverside natives who died in the service of the country during World War I. “I fully expect to be able to be done well in advance of Memorial Day,” Bailey said.

District 96 again mulls expanding foreign language classes Hurdles seen in terms of scheduling

By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

Riverside Elementary School District 96 will once again consider whether to expand foreign language instruction in the district. Currently the district offers seventh- and eighth-graders the option of taking Spanish or French as an elective. The district has in the past considered expanding foreign language instruction. In 2013 the school board, which had three brand new members, unanimously rejected a proposal from the then-administration to expand foreign language instruction by teaching Spanish in the elementary schools starting in first grade and then expanding the instruction through fifth grade. Since the 2013 decision, the issue of expanding foreign language instruction has been largely on hold, although the district’s strategic plan, adopted in 2016, includes the goal of expanding foreign language instruction from kindergarten through eighth grade. The first step for the district now is to determine whether there is time in the school day to add foreign language instruction

Riverside collects gifts for Sarah’s Inn The village of Riverside’s police department for the past dozen years has raised money and has collected gifts for Sarah’s Inn, a nonprofit agency that aids women and families who are victims of domestic abuse. For the past five years, police have focused on collecting holiday gifts for children. Residents and police officers donated more than 160 gifts to the drive, said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel. One resident, who chose to remain anonymous, has donated $1,500 in gift cards in each of the past two years, Weitzel said. “The residents of Riverside are very generous,” Weitzel said.

Happy Holidays and a Heartfelt ‘Thank You!’ Next month marks the 39th anniversary of McAdam Landscaping, which means our business has been around longer than most people have been alive, including me! That longevity doesn’t happen by accident. Through hard work and teamwork, we have beaten the odds; Scott most businesses McAdam Jr. don’t last four years, let alone nearly four decades. Much of the credit for our endurance in a field of here-today, gone-tomorrow outfits goes to my father, Scott, and uncle, Rob. They launched the business in their early 20s, grew the business with the aid of a dedicated and skillful staff, and continue as active operational leaders in our day-to-day success. But none of it would be possible without the trust placed in us by our clients, from the first ones who took a chance on a newcomer to our current customers. It is especially satisfying to note that some of those first clients from nearly 40 years ago still depend on us. Grateful for the impact we have been able to make for our employees, clients and the communities where we serve, we approach 2018 with anticipation and excitement for what’s to come. Some pushback on Ale House gambling request Trustees wary of veering toward standalone gaming parlor By BOB UPHUES Editor

The owner of the Brookfield Ale House, 8900 Fairview Ave., is in the process of expanding into the storefront immediately north of his year-old restaurant/bar, but village trustees expressed some wariness last week that the plan is veering close to creating what might be construed as a standalone gambling parlor. Steve Landrey, the owner of the Brookfield Ale House, said that isn’t his intention, saying he’s opening up the wall separating the two storefronts in order to connect them. On Dec. 11, Landrey outlined his plan for village officials at the village board’s committee of the whole meeting. He told trustees he’d like to obtain a license to locate video gambling machines in the storefront at 3750 Grand Blvd., most recently home to an e-cigarette shop, Cignot. In addition to the machines, Landrey said he would place furniture, a communal table and a women’s restroom in the space. The décor of the Ale House would extend into the new space, said Landrey, with the intention of

creating a unified business stylistically while separating the restaurant from the gaming machines. According to Landrey, the Brookfield Ale House does a brisk business Thursday-Sunday, but finds things rather quiet from Monday through Wednesday. The additional income it would derive from video gambling makes the machines attractive, he said. “As a businessman I’m going to pursue every option,” Landrey said. “Any little revenue we can bring in is going to really, really help.” Landrey has signed a one-year lease on the roughly 1,100-squarefoot space and has been working with the village’s building department on the plans. Illinois Gaming Board records indicate that Brookfield Ale House applied for a state gaming license in June. That application is still pending. In 2015, the village board voted to require any business with a liquor license to wait one year before applying for a local video gambling license. The reason for the waiting period was to weed out establishments, so-called gaming parlors, where gambling was the main focus.

Brookfield Ale House celebrated its first anniversary in mid-November, and Landrey is the first business owner to apply for a gambling license under the new, more restrictive rules imposed by the village. While trustees generally supported Landrey’s request to add video gambling to his establishment, the proposed location of a second entrance to the Brookfield Ale House – immediately next door to the new storefront – has raised some eyebrows. Landrey said state gaming officials require the entrance to a gaming area to be observable at all times. His proposed solution was to create a new entrance at the north end of the Ale House, where those interested in gambling can enter without having to walk through the entire length of the restaurant. “Customers that don’t want to play games, they just don’t want to see them or hear them,” Landrey said. The flipside of that is also true. Landrey said he has signed an agreement with Accel Entertainment, a video gaming vendor, to help him navigate the move to include machines in his business. “The gamers traditionally don’t

CHANGE AFOOT? The owner of the Brookfield Ale House has opened up the north wall of the restaurant/bar (shown above) to connect it with an adjacent storefront where he wants to place video gambling machines. He also would like to create a new entrance to that space using a door that’s now an emergency exit (at right). want to come through the place, if they’re just playing the games,” said Landrey of the advice he received from his contact at Accel Entertainment. “True gamers, they may not want to be in the restaurant.” That concept drew some pushback from Trustee David LeClere, who said he supported Landrey’s application for video gambling machines – even using the new storefront for the location. But he didn’t like the new entrance. “I think that’s going to kind of turn out to be what we don’t [want],” LeClere said. “Right now, I think it’s an entrance to a gaming place that

can get you to the Ale House.” Village President Kit Ketchmark also threw cold water on the new entrance. Restaurants, he said were a key for downtown revitalization. While video gambling can be part of that business model, Ketchmark said, standalone gaming locations are not part of the plan. “A storefront casino does not add to our downtown revitalization, and I think the concern is that we don’t want that. We want to see you succeed as the Ale House.” The village board is expected to make a decision on Landrey’s application at their next meeting on Jan. 8, 2018.

Brookfield to join public works mutual aid group For low cost, village can benefit in case of disaster

By BOB UPHUES Editor

For the rock-bottom price of $250 a year, the village of Brookfield could be in line to receive thousands of dollars in emergency public works assistance, should the occasion call for it. In January, the Brookfield Village Board is expected to vote to join the Illinois Public Works Mutual Aid Network (IPWMAN), a consortium of more than 200 municipal public works agencies that serves as a kind of insurance policy in the case of natural or man-made disasters. “They help each other with personnel and resources in emergency situations,” said Brookfield Public Works Director Amy Wagner, who pitched the idea of joining the network based on her experience as part of

the group when she worked for the city of Lockport. “If we have a disaster where we’re shorthanded or understaffed to take care of all of the work that needs to be done, we would call IPWMAN and they would deploy personnel and resources from area communities that are also members to help us out,” Wagner said. To illustrate the way IPWMAN works, Wagner referenced the consortium’s response in 2012 to a microburst event in Lockport that left the city with heavy damage to trees. IPWMAN sent personnel from eight member agencies to the city over the course of five days, providing almost $25,000 in aid. “It was a huge help,” said Wagner, who was assistant city engineer at the time. According to Wagner, members of IPWMAN can get up to five days of assistance

from other member agencies at no cost, though after five days members are charged for the cost of continued assistance. For the five days after the microburst event in Lockport, said Wagner, “All the city spent was money for lunch” for those who came to their aid. There is no maximum number of times any members can request aid during the year and there is no requirement for member agencies to provide assistance at any specific time. “If we’re short staff, if we’ve got other things going on and we just can’t spare the people that day, it’s not a requirement,” Wagner said. Village Manager Keith Sbiral likened the arrangement to mutual aid agreements Brookfield has with neighboring fire departments.

Despite the lack of a requirement for sending personnel to other communities to help out in case of emergencies, Wagner indicated that members are often eager to pitch in. “You can help out as little as one day,” Wagner said. “We can send a couple guys and a truck.” Lockport, for example, used the consortium’s help just once in her nine years there. The city reciprocated when they sent resources to downstate Washington in the wake of devastating tornados that struck that area in November 2013. Members of the village board agreed that joining IPWMAN appeared to be a good idea, but the formal vote to join will come in the next month. “For $250 it seems like there’s little risk to this moving forward,” said Village President Kit Ketchmark.

Light touch

art of what makes the war memorial in Riverside’s Guthrie Park so appropriate is its unobtrusiveness. When you stand among the boulders with their bronze plaques listing the name of those who died while in the service of the nation, there is a peacefulness. Even if a freight train is rumbling by 50 yards away, the memorial’s place in the park makes it special. The reasons proposed for moving the memorial to a more prominent, visible location came from the right place. It would have made the memorial more immediately accessible. But, something – it’s hard to describe tangibly, because it’s mainly an emotional sense of place -- would have changed fundamentally. Village officials have now determined to leave the memorial in place and to handle any improvements to the memorial with a light hand. That’s appropriate. Certainly, the boulders, particularly the large stone dedicated after World War II, could use the stability. It’s the landscaping, though, that really needs the careful attention. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned much is the original landscaping of the memorial, which was described when the first boulders were dedicated in 1921. The year before the dedication, trees were planted as memorials to mark each boulder. It’s not completely clear whether those trees survive today; it doesn’t look like it, though mature trees do create something of a shelter for the memorial. Perhaps a nod to that original landscape layout could be part of the solution in Guthrie Park. It may even do more to set it apart as a special place, less attractive as a place to set down a cooler and a beer during village parties in the park. Whatever the solution, we’re guessing a less-is-more approach will serve the memorial in the future.

Good fit

It’s hard to imagine a better candidate for the new position at Riverside-Brookfield High School – essentially as head of security – than Lane Niemann. The longtime North Riverside police officer and retired police chief is about as good a fit as you could find. He knows the communities intimately, knows and has worked closely with all of the police chiefs whose communities feed into the high school, understands kids (he’s been a longtime coach) and has the kind of personality that makes it easy for him to connect with students, parents and staff. With school security and safety at the forefront in a nation where gun violence is too real a threat, Niemann will be able to help the high school craft security plans and quickly respond to situations. Riverside police, who are tasked with responding to incidents at the high school, will have an additional layer of support with Niemann onsite daily during school hours, an important piece of the puzzle for a small department.

Opinion KOSEY CORNER

It’s ‘tradition,’ so have another cookie

‘C

hristmas is coming, the goose is getting fat!” You may cross out “goose” if you so desire and insert any name which may make sense in the familiar song, because we all know the holiday season is one where we fill our plates, which then fills our stomachs and tightens our belts. We do this knowing too well that we will then make our annual resolution for the following year to cut back on our eating – yeah, sure. We find ourselves going up to the table filled with sweets. We justify the visits by invoking “tradition,” knowing that in reality we could make the scrumptious goodies at any time of the year. For me it is Aunt Inez’s pizzelles and biscotti, though the job of making them has been turned over to her daughter, my cousin Josephine. Last week, we received the package, which was wrapped so tight I thought I would have to call Homeland Security to break our way into it. It was worth the effort. My mother-in-law would make the little pecan balls, and I would try not to wear black so I didn’t end up looking like a cookie myself, covered in powdered sugar. We Italians always like panettone, which is similar to

a Czech houska. We also had nougat candies that came from Italy and were packaged in a little box with beautiful Italian scenes. There was another sweet, don’t know if it had a name, it was almost like a fruitcake. How many people really eat fruitcake? I feel compelled to have one small piece at Christmastime, and then I feel I’ve have fulfilled my obligation to the monks that make them. My mom would put a shot of brandy in the fruitcake tin and let it set in. Now, that was fruitcake! I used to make bourbon balls -- you can substitute rum -- but found I was using too much of the liquor. I just needed enough to get everything to hold together. Portions, sadly, had to be limited. I have printed and cut out more holiday recipes than I will ever make, but I have come to the realization that delicacies do not have to be made or consumed only at holidays, so maybe my resolution will be to make holiday goodies all year round. I can just get different colored sprinkles. So, pour yourself an eggnog, turn on “It’s a Wonderful Life” and have that holiday goody. Feliz Navidad! Buon Natale! Merry Christmas! Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men and women.

Excited about Brookfield Library’s new plans As a lifetime member of the Brookfield Friends of the Library, it is time again to thank the Library Board of Trustees and the many Brookfield residents who worked diligently for five years or more to assess needs, design, and seek funding for a new library. We came oh-soclose. Understandably, village and school needs surfaced and we lost out. Those entities need our support, too, and they are not going away. Due to the library leadership’s credit (and their spectacular fiscal responsibility) they are not giving up. Instead they are presenting a proposal that recognizes the reality of our times. I wish them luck and again thank them for their perseverance. And thanks to all who have contributed to the library’s efforts. I hope you are as excited as I am to follow what will come of their new plans.

GOP candidates say thanks, but they’re out About two weeks ago, and near the end of the petition circulation process, Congressman Luis Gutierrez announced that he would not seek re-election to the 4th Congressional District. He promptly endorsed County Commissioner Jesus Garcia in a move that concerned many west suburban voters. As a state Republican Party volunteer, I felt an obligation to speak out for an open and transparent electoral process and against what could only be described as a peculiar coincidence or a Chicago dirty trick. I had not previously considered seeking higher office, but fearing no other candidate would be able to challenge the de facto “anointing” or even worse – that a fringe candidate would enter the race, I quickly gathered a group of local residents and circulated petitions to get on the ballot. Thanks to the help of Republican, Democrat and Independent voters, in two short days we collected double the amount of necessary signatures to establish a candidacy. My sincerest thank you to each and every one of you for helping me make that happen. One can only imagine my pleasant surprise to find that not one, but three other Republican candidates emerged, prepared to answer the call. LETTERS Continued from previous page mitments, a decision to take on a race of this magnitude is never a small one. I am pleased to see that you, my friends and neighbors, also felt that this race was too important to ignore and supported the various eager candidates in their efforts to get onto the ballot. As a result, it has become unnecessary for me to continue my own last-minute campaign. I intend to submit papers to formally withdraw my candidacy. I eagerly await the actions of these much needed newcomers to the political process. I expect that over the coming days and weeks, the local ward and township organizations will begin the endorsement process and vet each of the candidates. I anticipate a spirited, informative, and civil conversation that discusses the issues facing the district. Again, thank you to each and every one of you, especially my wife, for all of your work on my behalf. Any effort to hold our elected officials to a higher standard is never a wasted one, especially in Illinois.

Having lived in Brookfield for the last 25plus years and counting, I have come to recognize the great community that I was lucky enough to be raised in. From outstanding neighbors, to a great diversity of local activities, and an outstanding school system, Brookfield and our neighboring near west suburbs have so much to offer.

This blue-collar, family-oriented environment gave me the strength, experience and confidence to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals. At age 22 I started my first business. At age 23 I became a homeowner and a fulltime police officer. At age 26 I started law school at John Marshall. I’ve been elected the secretary of my union lodge and have been a key member of the negotiating committees for our collective bargaining agreement. I was chosen as the Police Officer of the Year at my Department in 2016 and received numerous other accolades for my service in the line of duty. This community also circled around and supported me when my father, a former U.S. Marine and patriot, passed away at age 49. I was 19 years old at the time and very alone. My profound respect and admiration for our home is what led me to declare my candidacy for the Illinois House of Representatives in the 23rd District in September. I have sat back and watched as Illinois slips further and further into financial turmoil. A severe lack of leadership has led us down this path, and the political establishment has shown no interest in correcting these flaws. I want to protect the interests of the people who have allowed me to reach the heights I have achieved. When I entered this race, I saw a clear path to victory. Unfortunately, my obligations to my job at the police department, my business endeavors and my continuing legal education will prevent me from continuing to give my full, undivided attention to proving to you that I am the best candidate for this office. It took much thought, prayer, and discussion

with my family and trusted advisors to make the decision to suspend my campaign for state rep. That being said, I am proud of the work that I, and many others, put into the campaign to date. We knocked thousands of doors and garnered over 1,000 signatures on my petition. I cannot thank those people who helped me walk enough times. Nor are there enough thanks for the people who took the time to speak to me and allowed me to listen to their concerns, regardless of whether they signed my petition or agreed with me on all the issues. Serving as an elected official is my dream and ultimate goal. I can see no better way to give back to the community that has given so

much to me. While I am stepping back from this race now, I will continue to contribute to the community through my service as a police officer, the philanthropic endeavors of my businesses and by using my voice to effect positive change at each level of democracy in the state. I will be taking the next few months to plan my next steps, and I look forward to announcing in the not too distant future where I will be headed next. Thank you for supporting me in any way that you may have done, and I will continue to work on your behalf in any way that I can. Keep your eyes to the horizon and know that I will.

Stress-free Lions swimmers set for more success Two-time reigning state champs building another contender

neasy lies the head that wears a crown. That famous line from Shakespeare’s play “Henry IV, Part 2,” really doesn’t apply to the Lyons Township High School boys swimming team. In fact, the two-time reigning state champions are pretty relaxed these days. That’s not say the Lions don’t have very high expectations this season. They are simply benefitting from having not only the heart but perspective and patience of a champion. “I think we’re just kind of going about our business,” LTHS coach Scott Walker said. “I definitely don’t see any kind of pressure on our kids. There is a belief we have an opportunity to compete at a very high level. We are capable of a top-five finish at state, but I think we’re looking to do even better.” The Lions’ confidence is understandable considering their talent-laden, experienced roster. LTHS returns the bulk of an excellent lineup that edged rival Hinsdale Central 156.5-143 for the state title last season. LTHS broke eight team records last season, including the 200-yard medley relay, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay. To borrow another line, this one from the Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid, the Lions are content to “trust the process” this winter. “It’s a process to make progress. I think we have a very patient group,” Walker said. “Some other programs may be swimming really well right now, but that doesn’t faze our guys at all, or affect our training. Our swimmers buy in to our program.” The Lions’ top swimmer is Walker’s son, Spencer, who won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 48.70 seconds at the IHSA State Meet last season. He became the first individual boys swimming state champ from LTHS. At state, he also placed fourth in the 500 freestyle at 4 minutes, 29.15 seconds. He’s verbally committed to swim at the University of Alabama next year. Henry Claesson is another top returner for LTHS. He finished third in the 100 freestyle (45.58) at state last season. In the 100 breaststroke, returner Michael Walsh finished sixth (57.31). The Lions also excelled in all three relays at state last season. The quartet of senior Ryan Hammond, Matt Linden, Walker and Claesson timed 3:04.70 in the 400-yard freestyle relay for a third-place finish.

(Clockwise from left) The Lion’s Henry Claesson is an excellent sprint and relays swimmer. Spencer Walker is the defending state champion in the 100-yard backstoke. Jeffrey Vitek is an experienced and versatile swimmer for LTHS.

Hammond, Linden, David Rak and Claesson placed second in the 200 free relay (1:24.34), while Walker, Walsh, Jeff Vitek and Hammond took third in the 200 medley (1:32.04). This season, LTHS has won dual meets against Glenbrook North, Glenbard West and York. The team also earned third at the Barrington Relays, second at the Stevenson Invite and won the Marmion Invite over the weekend. At Marmion, the Lions set three meet records in assor ted relays. The 200 medley of Spencer Walker, Walsh, Vitek and Claesson; 200 free relay of Walsh, Vitek, Spencer Walker and Claesson; and 300 backstroke relay of Frank McCarter, Jack Thorell and Spencer Walker each set a record. “I think we’re still a team in progress,” Scott Walker said. “We had three guys [Walker, Claesson, Vitek] miss the Bar-

rington Relays, which obviously had an impact. Now they are back, but we’re still trying to figure out the right kind of lineup. I’d say everybody is settling in.” Scott Walker mentioned Max Zator, Will Duerr, Ben Lynch, Jack Racanelli and Adam Kiley as other contributors for LTHS. Along with the upperclassmen, the Lions have several younger swimmers set to lead the program in the near future. “A lot of them train at national levels during the summer, which pays off then they come together for their high school team,” Scott Walker said. “About 10 years ago, none of our kids were training during the offseason and we still made an impact. Now, they are training hard during the summer.”

RBHS swimming dives into action this season Returning state qualifiers Rosa, Wise and Bielobradek anchor Bulldogs’ lineup

By MARTY FARMER Sports Editor

The rare combination of two brothers and two divers from the Riverside-Brookfield High School swimming team qualified for the IHSA State Meet last season. With the exception of Joey Rosa, all are back this season leading the Bulldogs with their talent and experience. Junior Michael Rosa and senior divers Ja’moni Wise and Matthew Bielobradek comprise the trio of returning state qualifiers. “Last year was the first time in program history that we sent two divers to state, so that was pretty special,” RBHS coach Graham Risley said. “Ja’moni and Matthew are both looking to make state again. Michael also returns as a very talented swimmer who will make another run at the state meet.” Rosa swam the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 59.09 seconds to place fifth at the Downers Grove South Sectional last season. He appears poised for another stellar campaign this winter. “Michael is our best swimmer on the team,” said Risley, the most decorated swimmer in RBHS history. “He contributes in a big way on all our relays. Last year, he made state in the 100 breaststroke. This year, he looks to do the same plus make it in a second event, most likely the 200 IM.”

Michael Rosa is a key contributor for the RBHS swimming team. In diving, Bielobradek and Wise punched their ticket to the state meet last season by placing fifth (436.40) and sixth

(398.25), respectively, at the Downers Grove Sectional. Although the team lost its top two freestyle swimmers in Joey Rosa and Michael Georgopulos to graduation, a relatively experienced group returns for RBHS. Joey Rosa qualified for state last year in the 100-yard freestyle with a sectional runner-up time of 47.24. Along with the three state qualifiers, seniors Matt Harder and Ben Regan, juniors Peter Baartman and Chris Murphy, and sophomore Nolan Dowling are key contributors for the Bulldogs. Newcomers Noah Breit and Jose Macias are nice additions to the varsity. “Noah and Jose are talented swimmers,” Risley said. “They are already making a big impact on the team.” The Bulldogs, who finished second in conference last year, should battle Plainfield for the championship this season. Over the weekend, RBHS placed third with 299 points at the Downers Grove South Invite. Fenwick (449) won the title and Stagg (417) finished second. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in dual meets this season, with an 88-87 win over Homewood-Flossmoor on Dec. 5 and a 126-80 loss against Oak Park and River Forest on Dec. 12. Dowling, Harder, Baartman, Murphy, Breit and Matt Towner all swam season-best times against OPRF. In the season opener, RBHS earned second in the Blue Division of the Maine East Relays.

RBHS girls basketball remains on a roll Bulldogs pick up four wins with Christmas tourney on horizon By MARTY FARMER Sports Editor

The Riverside-Brookfield High School girls basketball team might be the most pleasant surprise in area high school sports. The Bulldogs reeled off four wins last week, improving to 12-1 this season with a relatively new starting lineup. A balanced offensive approach and stingy defense have paved the way to success. “Having so many difference contributors is one of the reasons this team works so well,” freshman guard Brenna Loftus said. “It’s a critical part of how this team functions. No matter who is on the court, they can be relied for their strengths in different parts of the game.” Loftus had 23 points, six rebounds and three steals during Saturday’s 51-46 over Sandburg at the Oak Lawn Tournament. Sarah JnoBaptiste recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Maddie Meehan dominated the glass with 18 rebounds to go with eight points and four assists. JnoBaptiste had a double-double of 23 points and 12 boards RBHS put four players in double figures scoring against host Fenton. Consequently, the Bulldogs cruised to an 87-56 victory. Ashley Rivera (19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals), Loftus (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Meehan (11 points, 11 rebounds) also played key roles in defeating the Bison. RBHS controlled the tempo with 17 fastbreak points and 26 points off turnovers.

The Bulldogs defeated Oak Lawn 49-36 and Romeoville 5733 in other games last week. “Our upcoming conference games will be challenging, but we are continuing to go into games with the mindset that we can beat any team,” Meehan said. “We are ready for some good and challenging matchups.”

RBHS boys basketball Four players reached double figures in scoring to power the Bulldogs past visiting Aurora Central Catholic 69-65 on Friday. Forward Andrew Veon led the way with 15 points, five assists and six rebounds. Ryan Cicenas (12 points), Patrick Hanley (11 points) and Zach Vaia (10 points) provided support. Reserve AJ Meindl also contributed with eight points and four rebounds. The Bulldogs also stepped up defensively in the fourth quarter to secure the win. RBHS (3-5, 2-1 Metro Suburban Conference) face a pair of tough conference road games this week at Fenton and Glenbard South. The Bulldogs will play in the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York High School (Dec. 26-30).

Fenwick boys basketball AJ Nixon’s buzzer-beating 3-point basket, assisted by his brother Damari, lifted the Friars to a 61-58 win at Brother Rice on Friday in Chicago. Senior forward Michael O’Laughlin led Fenwick in scoring with 16 points. The Friars, who have won four straight games and 30

The Friars’ next game will be at home against Mount Carmel on Friday, Dec. 22. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. During Christmas break, Fenwick will compete in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament.

Fenwick girls basketball The Friars’ six-game winning streak was snapped by Montini on Saturday in the finals of the Marian Catholic Invite. In the semifinals, Fenwick upset Marian Catholic 52-43 as seniors McKenzie Blaze (23 points) and Kate Moore (17 points) led the way. Blaze and Moore each earned all-tournament recognition. Fenwick will compete in the Dundee-Crown Tournament from Dec. 26-30.
