Greetings!

T

he Maywood Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the 2017 78th Anniversary Community Guide. Launched twenty years ago (1987) by the then President Karen A. Yarbrough, the Guide has continued to be a valuable source, concerning the history of Maywood and its many resources and organizations. In addition, it is an important and ongoing marketing tool for the businesses, hospitals, not-for-profits and other organizations, since the Guide is mailed, free of charge, to the nearly 8,000 households in the Village, as well as to all members and advertisers. Copies are also available during the year at the Maywood Public Library and the Village Hall. This year we continue our collaboration with Publisher Dan Haley and his staff at the Wednesday Journal in Oak Park, which includes Maywoodian Michael Romain, Editor of the recently launched Village Free Press in Maywood. The theme for this year’s Guide is Maywood’s Role in World History – Connecting the Great Wars of the 20th Century (19172017). Beginning with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. in World War I on 6 April 1917 and

culminating with the 75th Anniversary of the Bataan Death March and its surrender on 9 April 942 we trace the patriotic participation of the Village of Maywood in the cataclysmic events of the past 100 years. In addition, we highlight some of the major events of the past years, including the Chamber’s Annual Banquet, featuring Keynote Speaker Christopher J. Kennedy, the launching of a local newspaper, the Village Free Press, the dedication of our new Train Station at 5th Avenue, along with the dedication of an overpass at 25th Avenue and St. Charles Road in Bellwood, and the 75th Annual Bataan Day Memorial Service, with Keynote Speaker, Major General Richard J Hayes, Jr., the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois. As the Chamber celebrates its 78h year of service to the community, let us remember our duty to God, family, and country and let us truly strive to be leaders in the Third Millennium. May God bless Maywood and our great country of America! Edwin H. Walker IV President/CEO Maywood Chamber of Commerce

Mayor’s Message

G

reetings, Maywoodians. It is again a pleasure to commend the Maywood Chamber of Commerce for the outstanding service it provides to the Village of Maywood as it enters its 78th year. The Chamber is an integral part of our community, because it assists in addressing the needs and concerns of the business entities in town, and it helps to promote our phenomenal village as a welcoming, accommodating, and special place to do business. One of the many, many reasons Maywood is such a keen business site is because of the enviable, strategic location we enjoy. Every mode of transportation is available to our citizens and to the people who come to the village to conduct business, eat a meal, or shop. We are right off the Eisenhower expressway — with both on and off ramps — we are close in proximity to both Midway and O’Hare

International Airports, we have easy access to the Blue and Green lines of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), and we have a Metra train running through Maywood. Indeed, earlier this year, we welcomed Mr. David A. Orseno, the Executive Director and CEO of Metra, as we cut the ribbon to open our brand new heated, indoor Metra Train Station at Fifth Avenue and St. Charles Road! As I have said elsewhere, that lovely Metra station, and the new additional parking spaces adjacent to it, harkens back to our glory days—the glory days that we are working diligently to recapture. We are intent on reviving the commercial vibrancy of our town. I want Fifth Avenue, St. Charles Road, Lake Street, and every other major artery to pulsate with businesses, with cultural, social, and educational outlets, and with professionals providing needed services. I continue, for example, to be encouraged with the work that takes place at the

intersection of 17th Avenue and Madison Street—the area we are trying to promote as the Maywood Technology District. We would like to attract more technology concerns that will spill out into the St. Charles Road area. With our tremendous access to all forms of transportation—air, rail, and road — and with our talented and capable workforce, a major foray into the tech industry is easily foreseeable and feasible. Our entrepreneurs and professionals are such an asset to Maywood. Many of them can be counted on to engage in the type of social responsibility that helps sustain municipalities and the citizens that live there. We are in an important phase in Maywood’s history, as we tenaciously attempt to create the conditions that further enhance our town’s appeal, so that a rapid build-up becomes possible and doable. That is why my door is always open to the ideas and initiatives of the Chamber, and to the innovative thoughts of our citizens. Let’s go, Maywood! Warmest regards, Edwenna Perkins Mayor, Village of Maywood

MAYWOOD’S ROLE IN THE

GREAT WARS World War I (1917), World orld War II (1942)

1914

World War I begans after an explosion in August 1914, which killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria while on official state business in Serbia.

1,000

In 1915, Germans sank the passenger ship, the Lusitania. Over 1,000 Americans were killed aboard that ship. The demand for U.S. involvement increased.

A memorial statue to George Dilboy is located in Maywood at Hines Hospital. George was of Greek heritage. He joined the U.S. Army in 1917 and died a hero on July 18, 1918, near Belleau, France. The statue serves as a reminder to soldiers that their sacrifice is valuable, regardless of their ethnic origin, race, and religion.

1917

On April 6, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson declares war on the German Empire, after the U.S. government intercepted communications from the Germans to the Mexican government, urging Mexico to declare war on the U.S. The call for service drew more than 2 million civilians into military life.

At the Veterans Memorial Maywood Park, a WWI-era cannon stands. The cannon honors those from Maywood and beyond, who fought on the military front in Europe during the Great War. SOURCE: Courtesy of Maywood Bataan Day Organization/Photos by Spooner Baumann

A Giant Sculpture, Made In Maywood, Finds A Home In Grant Park

A

15-foot wooden sculpture, that was built in Maywood last year by contemporary artist Tashi Norbu, has now become part of the fabric of Chicago’s Grant Park. The sculpture, called “Urban Buddha,” was built from reclaimed Brazilian wood on the grounds of Re-Use Depot, 50 Madison St. in Maywood. After Norbu completed the work last October, the giant eclectic Buddha was installed in the Grant Park Skate Park, near Michigan Ave. and Roosevelt Rd. During an interview last year, conducted while he was still working on the sculpture in Maywood, Norbu said that “deforestation from palm oil production is unbelievable nowadays. “The Chinese are doing the same thing everywhere in the world,” he said. “The message is for us to be the flower, not the bee. We have to be like the flower, that grows beautifully by itself and you don’t have to look for something that the bee does.” According to a 2016 report by DNAinfo, Chicago’s park officials had hoped the sculpture,

Norbu’s first artwork in the United States, would attract visitors to the park’s south end during times when the Skate Park is closed. Norbu’s sculpture weights

about 3,500 pounds and cost roughly $20,000 to construct, according to DNAinfo. “It’s not real obvious, you have to look at it,” Bob O’Neill, president of the Grant Park

A Gardening Revolution Could Be Taking Root

T

he closing of Aldi in Maywood last year and Ultra Food in Forest Park and Meijer in Melrose Park this year have created something of a desert in Proviso Township, when it comes to places residents can go to get fresh produce. But on Madison St. in Maywood, right across the street from Proviso East High School and adjacent to ReUse Depot, there is an oasis. “I grew too much,” said Christopher Epps, 36, during an interview on Saturday. Epps is the full-time gardener, who is slowly, deliberately making the Proviso Partners Giving Garden the start of what he hopes will be a paradigm shift in how Proviso Township residents relate to the food they eat. He pointed his soiled hand to raised beds of carrots, egg plants, bell peppers, jalapeños, yellow and blue watermelons, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, tomato, rhubarb, basil, cilantro, dill — all of it grown organically on a sliver of land that is roughly the size of someone’s backyard.

Christopher Epps is the fulltime gardener, responsible for cultivating the Proviso Giving Garden in Maywood. “I am aiming to grow 4,000 pounds of [food],” Epps said. “Right now, I am at, like, 487. At this rate, I might get more than 4,000 pounds.” The work of Epps and the Giving Garden are the result of around $2.5 million in grants, that Proviso Partners for Health (PP4H) will receive over five years from Trinity Health. Formed Form in 2014, PP4H is a coalition coalitio of stakeholders, that united to fight against childhood obesity in the western o suburbs. subu The T community stakeholders include “Loyola ho University Health U System, Loyola UniverS

Epps said he partnered with PP4H and Trinity in order “to

teach all of the kids in the area how to grow food.” The grant funding allows Epps to work the garden full-time, 40 hours a week. Epps volunteers another 45 hours on top of the hours for which he is paid. “This was a trial period,” Epps said of the garden, adding that if all goes according to his ambitions, the Madison Street Garden will be the first of 13. He plans to set down 12 more gardens in Bellwood, Broadview and Maywood over the next three years.

Maywood Opens A Brand New Metra Commuter Station

I

n June, a new, nearly 900-square-foot indoor Metra commuter station formally opened for riders. Local elected officials, village staff and representatives from various entities, involved with the station’s construction, were on hand at the station, located at the corner of 5th Ave. and Main St., for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception. The new station, which is heated and features heated flooring, replaces an existing shelter that was similar to a bus station and that residents felt was inadequate. The station also features 40 new parking spaces on Main Street. The roughly $2 million station had been in the works since

at least 2011, when the village applied for a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ) grant to secure construction funds. “I am so pleased to cut the ribbon for our new Metra Commuter Station,” said Maywood

Mayor Edwenna Perkins. “The station is lovely and quaint and hearkens back to the glory days of Maywood that we will bring back. It will shelter our citizens as they wait for the train, and it will give others riding through another look at our town.”

According to the Maywood Bataan Day Organization (MBDO), the service is the “longest running World War II commemorative event in the Chicago area.” This year, MBDO officials added, also marked the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I. “Maywood citizens also responded to the call for heroes during WWI, and the men of the 33rd Division would

The Japanese army forcibly marched over 60,000 Philippine and American soldiers roughly 70 miles to a transfer point, where they were loaded onto trains. An estimated 500 to 650 American soldiers died during the march, many having suffered extreme abuse. Among the soldiers in the

With Maywood Prayer Walk, A Pastor Returns To His Old Stomping Grounds

I

n July 2017, Pastor Anthony Pelegrino, who heads up Impact Ministries in Maywood, led around two dozen people on a prayer walk along the Prairie Path, from 17th Ave. to 11th Ave. and back. The walk through Maywood was more than a demonstration for the 42-year-old resident of Downers Grove. “I used to buy drugs out here,” Pelegrino said, while standing on a plot of grass, where the path meets the concrete road at 17th Ave., near Madison St. Nowadays, Pelegrino, who said he has been clean for 10 years, is looking for a physical space for his burgeoning ministry. He said he has sights set on Emerson Elementary School, 311 Washington Blvd. in Maywood.

Local Churches Provide Summer Jobs For The Youth

R

oughly two dozen young people were provided with summer employment in 2017 as part of a program initiated by the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance (PTMAN), a large network of west suburban churches and clergy members. The four-week work program, which PTMAN started in 2016, is designed for young people, ages 13 to 16 from all over the western suburbs. Last year, said Min. Albert Johnson, PTMAN’s Outreach Coordinator, the program outdid expectations. During an orientation session and monthly PTMAN breakfast meeting, held in June at Freedom Baptist Church in Hillside, Johnson shared the story of Darnyce Springfield, who worked for the summer at Marcus Wright Dental in Maywood. “They were so impressed with this young lady, that they decided to bring her on perma-

nently,” Johnson told the teenagers, as they gathered inside of Freedom Baptist’s cavernous sanctuary (a converted movie theater). More than 10 local employers, including Marcus Wright, Triton College, the Maywood Park District and Kathy’s Cafe, agreed to temporarily employ the youth for four weeks — four hours a day and four days a week — at roughly $8 an hour. Johnson referred to the setup as the 4-4-4 plan. The money to pay the young people, Johnson said, comes from PTMAN’s member churches and local entities that pledge to donate different amounts. One church in Naperville even hosted a benefit concert for the Program. The Program is the brainchild of PTMAN’s chairman, Bishop Dr. Reginald Saffo, the pastor of United Faith M.B. Church and head of United Faith Christian Institute Bible College, both

During an interview last year about the employment program, Saffo said that he wanted to demonstrate that local institutions, particularly churches, could drive the local economy in their own ways, independent of government funding. “A lack of government funding should never preclude our children from having a safe and productive summer,” he said. “We felt that it was our moral obligation to provide our youth with this experience. Churches that have an understanding of their role in community are very supportive and positive about these kinds of projects.”

During the June meeting, Saffo said that the goal of the program is to do more than provide young people with jobs. He said he hopes the program can help teenagers find what it is that fulfills them and gives them purpose. Most of the teenagers sat silently through the orientation process, which included some of the program’s coordinators briefing them on workplace etiquette (the need to come on time and to dress properly, among other protocols). The teenagers came from Maywood, Bellwood, Chicago and as far away as DuPage County.

Homes/Architecture

Maywood Landmarks & Historic Homes

M

aywood has a diversity of architecture and building forms that is beyond parallel for communities within the Chicago metropolitan region. Common architectural styles found within Maywood include: Italianate, Queen Anne, Prairie, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, French Eclectic, Craftsman, Art Modern and Mid-Century Modern. The vast majority of properties within Maywood have a defined architectural style. Some of these homes were designed by architects such as John Van Bergen, William Drummond, Spencer and Powers, E.E. Roberts, Talmadge and Watson, William Seyfarth and other contemporaries who lived more than a century ago. The eclecticism in many Maywood homes is a testament to the skill of the many accomplished architects, who received commissions in Maywood throughout the decades.

Jacob Bohlander House

316 North 4th Avenue. An unusual stone and red brick Queen Anne with wrap-around porch, built in 1894. The use of Greek columns on the front porch and dormers suggest the classic Queen Anne style popular in the 1880’s and 1890’s.

James Fletch Skinner House

The Henry Tolsted House 501 N. 3rd Avenue

Homes/Architecture Timothy J. Lynch House

416 North 4th Avenue A classic Chicago Bungalow built in 1927. Typical of its style, this house is particularly significant due to the quality of its design elements connected to Prairie and Craftsman architecture.

Jennie S. Thompkins House

503 North 4th Avenue Third oldest house in Maywood, which was reputedly doubled as the first post office.

Robinson House (1902)

602 North. 3rd Avenue The square-shaped house is designed in a vernacular cottage style and features a gable roof, wooden shingled Gothic arches on all sides, and a front porch with a hipped roof.

Harry H. Nichols House

216 South 4th Avenue This Queen Anne was built circa 1894 by the brother of Maywood’s founder, Colonel Nichols. The house is asymmetrical, with gables, porches, and bays.

Business Seaway Supply Co. Expands, Thanks To County Brownfield Grant

T

om Engoren, the owner of Seaway Supply Co., located at 15 N. 9th Ave. in Maywood, said that a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has allowed his business to stay, and possibly expand, in Maywood. Seaway Supply, which deliveries janitorial products, office supplies and other materials throughout the Chicago area, is looking to acquire a gravel parcel adjacent to its Maywood location that is currently owned by the Village. The company wants to turn the parcel into a fenced-in parking lot and eventually use the land to possibly develop even more warehouse or office space in the future. Seaway has been located in Maywood for around Photo by Michael Romain six years, Engoren said. Susie Lewis, Still Shining At 106

A

ccording to Chicago SunTimes columnist Mary Mitchell, Susie Lewis, 106, of Maywood, almost looks too good to be true. When Mitchell, a former Maywood resident herself, visited the Maywood home in August, where Lewis has lived for half a century, the columnist encountered a woman, whose face “is virtually untouched by the two scourges of time: wrinkles and sag” and who “has the peaceful look of a contented child.” “In her living room,” Mitchell writes, “a lifetime of family photos fills the tops of accent tables. Nestled among

pictures of her daughters and sons, nieces and nephews, is a framed photo of the former first family.” The mementos are the key to Lewis’s success, if you ask the radiant centenarian. Why does Lewis think she’s lived for so long? Lewis told Mitchell — it’s all about family. “Why do you think the Lord let you stay here so long?” Mitchell asked. “I think he let me stay here because I took care of my whole family. I took care of my mother after my father died. After she died, I took care of my two sisters and brothers, and I was the youngest,” Lewis said.
