Caring for and nurturing whole communities with a mothering kindness

wore my sweater inside out for an entire day a week or two ago. No one told me. Thank goodness I had a stop planned at Chico’s where a very kind salesperson told me and a quick change around was super convenient. When my 10 year old whines in the morning, the sound is more anxiety producing than nails on a chalk board. She whines, I yell. She whines and maybe that yell becomes a bellow. My husband has more patience and he gets us through our mornings. Thank goodness. I can’t make cheesecake. A recent Girl Scout Recognition ceremony was reason for two of our leaders to make homemade thin mint cheesecake. After a long day a bite of that cheesecake was perfection. I think we’ve all said this, “Thank goodness for cheesecake.”

My life is full of these little failures. I know it is all part of humanity. Some days those failures feel large and immense. Sometimes it’s a small trip on the sidewalk as we cross that comes with a mild embarrassment. I’m not, this week, wishing I was perfect. It’s too much pressure. We are human. We fail. And we need others to take care of us. Smile at us. Give us pats on the back. Mothering kindness from anyone helps us get through those human failures. Both of the Oak Park families featured here have mothers who are devoting their lives to helping others, caring for and nurturing whole communities with a mothering kindness. Amy Maglio is founder and Executive Director for Women’s Global Education Project. Through her organization she is making things easier for girls in Kenya and other African Countries to get an education, go to school. Her mother Norma Maglio is a retired school teacher – for years she had classes of children she inspired to learn and be successful. Mary Ann Bender, or Dr. Mary Ann Bender, a local podiatrist is literally taking care of our standing pain daily. Her recent efforts through the OPRF Chamber to co-organize and lead a group to have an Oak Park River Forest Health Fair brought great information about our

local health resources to our whole community. I know all three of these women. They are doing wonderful things. Through their humor, their ability to show their humanness, I know they aren’t perfect. They roll with the punches. They laugh off the small trips on the curb. They are mothers. Thank goodness. I’d like to say a special thank you to Triton College’s Photography program. Our photographer for this special section, Bernadetta donated her time. She is completing her course work with Triton this spring – that’s how we found her. She was kind and wonderful to our families during the photo shoot- and well we are really happy with how wonderful they all look. Also special thanks to Cheney Mansion, Poppy Vogel, and the Park District of Oak Park. While the time of day we took the photos didn’t give us a chance to show off their newly renovated Green House – it’s lovely. I wish I had reason to throw a big party this summer.
