Springing into home remodeling

fter a winter indoors with plenty of time to contemplate what’s wrong with their homes, many homeowners look to spring to freshen up the interior and exteriors of their abodes with remodeling and renovation projects. Older housing stock needs maintenance, and spring can be the time to tackle myriad home projects, from painting to carpentry. Anthony Taglia, of Anthony’s Remodeling & Painting, has been rehabbing homes for over 30 years in the Oak Park area. He thinks spring is a popular time for home projects for two reasons. “Spring is busy because a lot of people get a tax refund and want to put that money back into their houses,” he said. “Of course, the weather also makes it easy to finish projects involving outdoor work.” If your house is one of your biggest assets, it makes sense to invest not only in upkeep but also in improvements. Ta-

glia thinks that over the long haul, real estate is a safe investment and remodeling projects can pay dividends, noting that adding another bathroom to a house might increase the home’s value twofold over the costs spent on the addition. Spring is also the ideal time for painting projects. It’s easier to paint the inside of a house when windows can be opened for ventilation. Exterior paint that was starting to look tired in the fall may experience serious peeling problems after a season of snow and ice. Late spring and fall are the best times to complete painting projects outside in the Oak Park area, Taglia said. “Before we had weather apps on the phone, it was tough to tell when you were going to get a rainy patch,” he noted, “but now it is a lot easier to predict when you’ll have a string of days that are dry. You want to be able to start and finish a project in the pe-

riod of a few days so you don’t have to deal with changes in paint color that can happen over time.” Taglia often works on detailed painting schemes for the area’s many Victorian homes and said that the older homes can require maintenance beyond a simple paint job. Houses with wooden frames and historical pedigrees may need more than just a quick touch up, particularly if the wood is rotting or the foundation is not stable. “Rebuilding a porch can take a lot of preparation,” Taglia said. “If a porch is really old, there can be code changes when you go to rebuild. In River Forest, we recently completed a wrap-around porch with a circular staircase. We

needed to get architect drawings and follow historic district guidelines.” Another reason for a busy spring season: the real estate market. With warmer temps, the local market tends to heat up, too. Many families with children are hoping to buy or sell in time to get the kids established in school by the fall. The rash of home sales triggers home-improvement projects, everything from getting a house ready for market to new owners looking to make a new house their own. SPRING CLEANING: Time for a fresh start

n the first warm days of spring, all around town, people are opening their windows and doors to air out homes closed up all winter long. While fresh air makes us feel good, a lot more elbow grease goes into actually cleaning a home in the spring. Traditionally, many believe that the concept of spring cleaning began with the Jewish faith in anticipation of the Passover feast and an attempt to rid homes of any traces of leavened bread. In other faiths, a thorough cleaning is associated with the period of Lent before Easter. Before modern conveniences such as vacuum cleaners, the spring was often considered an ideal time for a thorough cleaning because windows and doors could be opened for dusting with no fear of insects coming in, and coal furnaces could be turned off. Lee Latham of We Clean Green says a good, deep cleaning is appropriate for all seasons, but she has a few tips based on her own methods for homeowners looking to start the spring season with a really clean home. “I tell people to go above, below, beside and behind. These are the areas you don’t see often, and it’s very easy to forget about them.”

Above means looking to areas like the top of refrigerators or the tops of kitchen cabinets that often collect a lot of dust. Below can mean everything from the neglected underside of a pedestal sink to wiping underneath kitchen appliances where dust and debris are often found. Latham likes to clean behind pictures on walls and behind the books on bookshelves. She also recommends getting in the nooks and crannies between kitchen appliances and cabinets.

Latham uses a chemical-free steam cleaning method to get her clients’ houses clean and ready for spring and notes that many of her clients are looking for relief from respiratory distress, which can be exacerbated by dust and conventional cleaners. “Many of the area’s older homes have features that can be hard to clean yourself. Radiators are terrible collectors of dust and pet fur, and they can be difficult to get clean on your own.” She says that spring is a great time to tackle these difficult areas as well as other spots that might not get cleaned on a weekly basis in every home. “Drapery should be vacuumed or taken down and cleaned. Blinds can be cleaned and dusted. Wiping down ceiling fans and light fixtures will get rid of a lot of dust. Spring is also a great time to clean the vent over the cook top, really clean the grunge out of the dishwasher and clean the inside of the fridge, too. Even simple items, like knobs and handles are some of the germ-iest places in your home.” Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, a good spring cleaning can you leave you and your home feeling healthier and ready for warm weather.

ith a warmer winter than usual (thank you, El Nino!) area yards are turning green ahead of schedule. Across Chicagoland, homeowners are itching to get outside and start working. Patrick Jones, owner of Oak Park-based The Yard Crew, says spring is always a busy time for his landscaping business as homeowners gear up to enjoy the outdoors again. “Everything looks so bad after winter, so everyone wants to spruce things up. A lot of people also wrapped up construction projects over the fall and winter, and their yards are basically mud pits.” Whether homeowners are looking for a simple spring cleanup or a more comprehensive landscape design for their outdoor space, Jones has crews dedicated to regular lawn care as well as more sizeable landscape design projects. Established customers are often looking for maintenance work, but oth-

ers see their yards as a blank slate. “We mow about 250 lawns a week in Oak Park and River Forest. We have several crews doing mowing, maintenance and pruning work. Other crews are working on patios, landscape design projects and whole yard design.” Jones has been working in the area for 13 years and went back to school to take horticultural classes so he could better service his clients. He also works as an authorized installer for Unilock, which allows him to bring the latest in technology to his patio and paving projects. Once the weather is warmer, he sees a lot of clients looking to expand their outdoor living spaces with a patio using stone work that complements their older homes. “Another big thing in Oak Park is that people love to put in fire pits,” he noted. “They like to make their backyards a bit of a destination for the 6-7 months a year that we can take

advantage of our outdoors space.” For regular spring clean-ups, he is already working with clients to remove dead debris from last year’s growing season. He assesses the perennials and prune backs plants as needed. But a big part of spring yard work is getting grass prepared for the summer. Patrick “We get the aeration done Jones and take care of over-seeding,” he said. “A very big part of getting a lawn to bounce back is assessing the fertilization and weed prevention needs and getting that first round of fertilizer down.” Jones said it is important to seek out a landscape company that is certified in fertilization and pesticides in order to get the best results for an individual growing season. “This year, we didn’t get a long, deep freezing season,” he

Hardscape and landscaping projects enhance front and back yards. noted. “We’re anticipating a big grub problem this year because the frost wasn’t that deep.” Since grubs feed on roots, Jones said there is a small window in May to treat grubs and after that, homeowners should watch for dead patches in their yards later in the summer caused by grubs.

Overall, though, the warmer winter is a boon for everyone ready to escape their homes for some sunshine and greenery. Jones remarked, “As it continues to be warm, things are sped up a bit. Overall, it looks like it will be warmer than usual, making everything bloom a bit earlier than usual.”

Tiptoe through the tulips: Spring at the conservatory

he Oak Park Conservatory has been bringing year-round spring to the community since 1929. The conservatory opened in 1914 as a community effort to house plants that residents brought home from exotic travels. When a local ball bearing company at Garfield and East Avenue closed in 1928, the Village Park Commission purchased the lot, and Forest Park-based Foley Greenhouse Manufacturing constructed the conservatory. The building was designated an Oak Park Historic Landmark in 2004. In 1970, the conservatory had to be closed due to falling glass and general decay, and volunteer Elsie Jacobsen led a campaign with many volunteers to save the building. In 1986 Elvira and Herbert Rubenstein formed

the Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory, a grass roots organization to raise funds to help maintain the building. In 1990, the group held its first spring plant sale and raised almost $6,000 in funds for the conservatory. Patti Staley, director of horticulture for the conservatory, says the event continues to this day and is a key stop for local homeowners looking to replenish their flower and vegetable gardens. “This is the 27th year for the plant sale,” Staley said. “It’s one of those events in the spring that the community really looks forward to. The majority of the plants are grown right

here in the conservatory, from edibles to ornamentals. It’s a nice buffet to shop from, and we also have flowers and herbs.” The plant sale takes place this year from Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1, but Staley notes that other programs make the conservatory worth visiting during the spring. On Saturday April 16, the conservatory will host a pre-Mother’s Day Tea Cup Party. Guests can enjoy a continental breakfast, tea, and create a tea cup garden to take home. One of Staley’s favorite activities is an ongoing program that helps locals bring the beauty of the natural world to their own homes. On the first Tuesday of the month, visitors can meet with one of the conservatory’s landscape designers. See OAK PARK CONSERVATORY on page B16
